(I literally forgot about the make-up and with the knowledge that I still have to finish Remus and redo Virgil because he looks a LOT different than I wanted him to, I just really don’t have the nerve to go back and draw it in... I love drawing, and very much enjoy digital, but coloring is not my most favorite thing...)

Divine

Originally born Harris Glenn Milstead just after the end of WW II, Baltimore's most outrageous resident eventually became the international icon of bad taste cinema, as the always shocking and highly entertaining transvestite performer, Divine.

Milstead met maverick film director and good friend, John Waters, at high school in Baltimore, and the two combined to star in and direct several ultra-low budget, taboo breaking cult films of the early 1970s. Their first efforts included Roman Candles (1967), Eat Your Makeup (1968) and Mondo Trasho (1969). However, their most infamous work together was the amazing Pink Flamingos (1972), in which Divine starred as "Babs Johnson", the "filthiest person alive" living in a pink trailer with her egg-eating grandmother, chicken-loving son and voyeuristic daughter.

Divine also starred as career criminal Dawn Davenport in Female Trouble (1974), as bored housewife Francine Fishpaw in Polyester (1981), as outlaw gal Rosie Velez in Lust in the Dust (1984) and in Waters' loving (but still slightly bizarre) salute to teen dance TV shows as Ricki Lake's mother in the superb Hairspray (1988). Milstead's health deteriorated due to his obese frame, and he passed away in his sleep from a combination of heart attack and apnea in 1988.

Going Under

After my one-night stand with Chris, and realizing he only showed up at my front door to use me once again I decided a warm bath would be therapeutic. I threw the bed sheet into the hamper and walked into the bathroom. I turned on the bathtub faucet and let the warm water fill the tub. Grabbing some lilac-colored candles and my little blue Bic lighter from underneath the sink, I ignited each candle and placed them around the sink and a few by the tub. I looked at myself through the reflection seeing every little mark Chris left behind. Little red-violet clouds adorned my neck, collar bones, left breast, and little fingerprint bruises around my hips, still holding onto me. These marks used to fill me with joy and send waves of heat to my core, but this time around it was different. I placed my fingers over the little bruises he left behind, remembering how tightly he held on to me, almost as if he was afraid I would slip away. These marks were a painful reminder I let Christopher Velez back into my life just for him to leave again. The room filled with the scent of lavender, as the candles wax melted away. Turning away from the mirror before my tears could escape my eyes I dipped my toe into the tub and feeling the perfect temperature. My whole body was embraced by the warm water giving me a nurturing hug and calming me down.

Days went by without Chris contacting me, and I continued on with my life trying to pretend we never had the one nightstand. After the marks he left behind faded away, I agreed to go out with Roman, a new guy I’ve been seeing after Chris and I broke things off. He was a tall handsome man, with black curls that adorned his head with memorizing light blue eyes. Roman had plump lips, a jawline that could cut glass and light stubble. Roman was everything Chris wasn’t, and I genuinely wanted something good to come from this. I slipped on a tight little baby pink dress that hugged me in all the right places, it used to be Chris’s favorite dress I owned. But tonight, I was ready to let someone else rip it off of me and enjoy it as much as he used to. I paired the dress with a Swarovski diamond choker, dangly diamond earrings, and a little clutch. I wore my favorite pair of pumps and tied my hair up in a voluminous ponytail. My phone vibrated from my dresser as I was giving myself one last glance.

Roman: Here babe

Me: Coming!

I peaked in the mirror before leaving the apartment, taking a deep breath before leaving the apartment.

Roman held onto my waist as we grinded against the dance floor. My hands were wrapped around in Roman’s nape as my ass was pressed hard against him. He let out a groan as I felt him harden underneath me. Smirking, I seductively turned around and bit my bottom lip snaking my arms around his neck. My eyes widened as I unexpectedly found a pair of big brown eyes glued to me.

“Everything okay?” Roman questioned

My eyes sprang back to Roman, as he patiently waited for me to answer.

“Uh- yeah” I smiled “everything’s fine I thought I saw something but I guess it was just my imagination”

I watched from my peripheral vision as Chris observed my every move as Roman went in to meet my lips with his. I closed my eyes and kissed him back feeling him pour his lust out into the kiss. Roman’s hands traveled down my body and squeezed my ass making me moan.

“Let’s take this back to my place” he growled in my ear, sending waves of heat to my core.

I nodded as he took my hand and guided me off the dance floor. I looked back one last time and noticed Chris was gone.

“Wait” I stopped as the cold air nipped my skin

“What is it?” Roman questioned cocking an eyebrow

“I- I forgot something I’ll be right back” I stuttered

I turned around and walked back into the club where I knew Chris would be.

“Are you here by coincidence or are you stalking me now?” I asked as I stood next to Chris leaning on the bar top

Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies

So I don't know what's real and what's not

Always confusing the thoughts in my head

So I can't trust myself anymore

I texted Roman I ran into a friend as I was walking out and she desperately needed me. That we would reschedule some other time as Chris and I sneaked out the back door. I knew what I was doing was wrong, and I knew I would get hurt in the end but I couldn’t stop myself. It was as if Chris had possession of my mind and soul. We made it to his car before our lust-filled desires came pouring out. His lips clung to my neck as his body hovered over mine in the back seat.

“Shouldnt...we take this...some were...a little...more….private?” I moaned as my fingers tugged on his hair

“Don’t worry nena” he mumbled as he marked my neck sending waves of heat to my core

I bucked my hips as his hand traveled down into my soaked core. He moved my panties to the side as he rubbed my never endings sending me to see the stars. He drew figure eights as our lips crashed into each other. I melted under his touch as Chris slipped two fingers inside me nicely stretching me out. The cold metal of his rings sent shivers down my spine as he curled them. Chris knew my body like the back of my hand. He knew how to make me whimper and moan under him.

“Papi” I whimpered “mas” tugging his high lighted locks as the desire for him grew

He unzipped his pants and pulled them down enough for his member to come out. We adjusted ourselves in the seats so my leg was over Chris’s shoulder as his tip slowly stretched out my entrance. The car windows fogged up as he thrusted into me sending me into the clouds. The car moved with Chris as he hit my inner sweet spot tying a knot in my lower abdomen. My walls closed in around his girth, sending him close to his own edge.

“Dale nena” Chris mumbled as he marked my neck

My eyes rolled to the back of my skull as my lips parted screaming his name. Thighs vibrating around him as he came inside me, filling me up with his warmth.

As we came back down from our highs, I wiggled away from Chris and grabbed my panties from the floor. Chris watched as I slid them back on and adjusted my dress.

“Where are you going?” He questioned confused by my actions

“I’m leaving” I stated as I fixed myself up before exiting the car door “I figured I’d beat you to it and leave first”

“Wait nena” Chris pleaded as I turned around holding onto the edge of the door

“Come back at least let me drive you back to your apartment” He offered as he zipped up his pants

“Fine but you’re not coming in with me” I snapped as I slammed the door and let myself into the shotgun seat

Chris quietly got into the driver’s seat and sped away.

I won't be broken again

The whole car ride I fought back tears, staring out the side window not daring to look at or in Chris’s direction.

“Why so quiet nena?” Chris asked finally breaking the silence

“No reason...I don’t really have anything to say” I sighed still refusing to look at him

I couldn’t help but think about how Chris would never be mine. This would never last, and it would be just like a dream, only to return on the rarest nights. But all dreams come to an end, and he would eventually stumble upon someone he would commit to. From the time when we used to date I knew he would treat that girl the way I wished he would treat me. I knew for a fact, that if I let him come back into the apartment with me, it would just be for the night. I would fall asleep in his arms and wake up alone filled with regret.

“Nena somethings up I know it, look at me” Chris insisted

I slowly turned my head to be met with an adoring pair of brown eyes staring at me. His hand gently rubbed my thigh as he gave me his signature warm smile.

“You can talk to me nena” he continued

“Really its nothing” I smiled weakly as he pushed away my thoughts wrapping me up in his intoxicating energy

I knew that I shouldn’t, that it was my self-destructive behavior acting up but after Chirs parked the car in the lot I invited him in to “talk”. We both knew that was a lie and it was the underlining lust we both wanted to fulfill. He was like a drug, and I, its victim needed it I could not live without his touch. Chris slammed me against the door as soon as we reached my apartment and remarked the forming clouds he left just minutes ago. My breathing hitched I fell under his touch again, fully prepared to be left naked and abandoned once again. Only to be left with the memory and the hope that we stumble upon each other once again.

“Fuck” I moaned as Chris unzipped my dress letting it pool to the floor as he grabbed me and sent me to cloud nine

“We demand that the Police and the government respond to this crisis of violence against LGBTQ people immediately and urgently. It is your duty to report the status of investigations and conduct them in accordance with established protocols for hate crimes, the correct treatment of trans and LGBTQ people and in accordance with the reform of the Police. They are killing us and the government is looking the other way. This epidemic of anti-LGBTQ violence is as important as the emergency that we are all experiencing right now”, said Pedro Julio Serrano, a CABE spokesman.

On Monday, April 27, CABE sent a letter to the Secretary of Public Security, Pedro Janer, and to the Commissioner of the Police Bureau, Henry Escalera, demanding an immediate and urgent meeting with Janer and Escalera in order to demand answers on the status of the investigations, the plan for surveillance and prevention of these crimes, as well as a guarantee that the processes will be carried out in accordance with the protocols and free of prejudice.

“The violence we are experiencing has its roots in the hateful rhetoric and actions by fundamentalist politicians and religious leaders who incite violence, who persecute, demonize and attack LGBTQ people. Enough of using us as scapegoats for your divisive agendas. We are as human beings as the rest of society and we deserve the same respect, the same freedom and the same equity”, said Carmen Milagros Vélez Vega, a CABE spokesperson.

Natasha Alor, a young trans activist, called for “creating a society in which respect for diversity is a value, not a weapon to attack the experiences of another human being. Our lives experience violence every second of the day. This is not only unfair, it is inhumane. As trans people we demand respect for our lives and the guarantee that justice will be done so that these crimes do not go unpunished and do not happen again”.

Lastly, Justin Jesus Santiago, a CABE ally, emphasized that “it is time for this government to demonstrate that it is going to fulfill its duty to protect trans people and LGBTQ people. We recognize the Coronavirus emergency, but there is also the emergency of homophobic and transphobic violence that is killing us. It is time to act. Not one more LGBTQ person can die because of hatred.”

In the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastation of Puerto Rico in 2017, it certainly seems a bit insensitive to use a Puerto Rican hurricane as the backdrop of a slightly cheesy heist movie.

This is kind of a shame; Force of Nature is kind of good – at least it has its moments – but it is hard to watch without having flashbacks to the desperation on the island just three years ago. In fact, throughout the film I was wondering if this story was supposed to be taking place during Maria. (The film never says one way or the other, so I assume it is supposed to be another fictional tropical storm.)

The film takes place almost completely in a single rundown apartment complex, so while the storm does isolate the action, it is not the cause of the action, nor does the film look at what else is going on in the area. The storm is sort of a subplot, a bogeyman who lurks in the background but is rarely a catalyst of what is happening. It makes it more difficult to escape the situation, but it is not the situation.

Which, again, makes the use of a hurricane in a place that so recently was devastated by a similar storm feel a little tone deaf, to say the least. There must have been another way to isolate these characters – a mix of cops, criminals, and innocent bystanders in the middle of a deadly standoff in search of some mysterious treasure – without picking up the emotional baggage of Hurricane Maria.

But okay, let’s give Force of Nature the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps (in fact, probably) the script was written, and the film was in process before Hurricane Maria. Divorcing the film from a natural disaster that was not of its making, does Force of Nature work as an adventure movie?

Umm, kind of. Sometimes. You’d be very hard-pressed to call Force of Nature a good film even without considering the storm in the background, but as action adventures go, it delivers the goods, at least sometimes.

Essentially it is a crossroads film – good and evil just happen to be at the same place at the same time and must battle it out in a fight to the death.

Good are the cops. The main cop is Cardillo (played by Emile Hirsch, where has he been?), a former New York hero cop who has somehow ended up in San Juan and become completely jaded due to some mysterious past tragic occurrence during an arrest. (Information on what happened is doled slowly out through the film.)

He is partnered up with a fresh-faced and enthusiastic rookie cop named Pina. Peruvian actress, model and singer Stephanie Cayo, making her English-language film debut in the role, is the most pleasant surprise in Force of Nature, making her potentially one-note character smart, funny, quirky and by far the most likable character in the film.

They are in the apartment complex because a guy they arrested begged them to allow him to feed his pet. (It doesn’t make much sense that they’d agree to it, but it does open the door to the story.) Once there they find that even though the island is being evacuated, there are some residents who refuse to leave. Among the people in the building are a terminally ill former cop played by Mel Gibson (yes, his career has come down to this…), his daughter who is a doctor and begging her dad to leave (Kate Bosworth) and a mysterious older man who seems to have some secrets.

There is also a group of criminals, led by the colorfully-monikered John the Baptist (David Zayas of Dexter), who are determined to make it into the mysterious older man’s apartment due to some mysterious bounty on the other side of the multi-locked door. (There seem to be lots of multi-locked doors in this complex.) John is quickly shown to be a blood-thirsty sociopath – he shoots the landlord, a woman and even one of his own men due to mild annoyances – and he is determined to kill anyone or everyone in the building while using the storm as a distraction for his criminal acts.

And that is pretty much it, the good guys hide and try to trap the bad guys and the bad guys go on a killing spree looking for treasure. And if you don’t see the eventual climax repeatedly advance telegraphed in a series of earlier scenes, then you just aren’t paying attention.

Like I said, not good, not bad, but it is a reasonable adventure story. It would be more enjoyable if it didn’t have the tragic baggage of real life, though.

(Ezeken kívül még volt sok tucat lemez, amibe belehallgattam, és maximum 10 percet töltöttem velük, mert annyira nem nekem szóltak vagy szimplán borzasztóak voltak, ezeket nem is sorolom. És igen, ez amolyan laza sorrend.)

Ahogyan fogy az idő, úgy lesz egyre jelentéktelenebb egy közepes valami. Amikor tanulókorszakban vagy, akkor számít a közepes is, a rossz is, része a megismerési folyamatnak. Később persze már időpazarlás. Hasznosabb majdnem bármi (például újranézni a kedvenc filmjeidet), mint közepes dologra szánni az időd. De ettől függetlenül persze egyszer MÉG hajlandó vagyok végighallgatni majdnem mindent (lásd fent a sok közepes dolgot, úgy 6.5-től lefelé). Másodszor meg amúgy is nagyon keveset kell. A megismerési kedv nem csillapodik. De ez nem teher. még.

A popzene nekem már nem annyira érdekes, hallgatom úgy 35 éve, és persze igyekeztem (sőt, igyekszem) végighallgatni, ami volt 1985 előtt is - lehet, hogy bármilyen korszakban elég lenne belőle ennyi, pláne ebben a lefelé tartó ágban. (Ettől még érvényes mellé az is, hogy még mindig nem unom, és nem látszik, hogy valaha is fognám unni.) Az viszont kétségtelen, hogy ami most érdekes lehet benne, az inkább az, hogy miről szól. Amelyik album harminc év múlva érdekes lesz ebből, az az, ami arról szól, hogy mi van most itt. Most viszont nem olyan egyértelmű megmondani, hogy melyik szól a legjobban arról, hogy mi van most. Harminc év múlva sokkal könnyebb lesz rálátni. Jelenleg ezt inkább csak érezni lehet, hogy ez, vagy az _például_ érdekes, ám lehetséges, hogy mégsem mondd annyit, amennyit majd harminc év múlva egy másik olyan, amelyik éppen a jelenben vehető észre nehezebben. Vagy persze csak adott esetben én nem veszem észre így.

Általában az van, ami évek óta van. Túl sok lemez van. Túlontúl sok (az évi 15 ezer lemezt lehet mondogatni a kétezres évek közepe óta, de ma már ez simán a duplája, ha nem triplája - csak február közepéig a Rate Your Music listáz 1000 db 2019-es lemezt és nyilván közel nincs itt az összes, és nyilván az év eleje még nem is olyan sűrű időszak). Ekkora mennyiségből könnyebb az átlagszínvonalat jó-közepesre kihozni, vagyis inkább kihozni egy látható(an nagyobb számú), mennyiségű jó-közepes albumot, mint abban a korban, amikor a sokszor nagyon mellélövő, rosszul számító számító lemezkiadók adott mennyiséget jelentettek csak meg, nehogy maguknak kavarjanak konkurenciát. Azaz teszem azt 1988-ban több volt a kimagasló LP, de értelemszerűen kevesebb mennyiségű a hasonló színvonalat képviselő tűrhető, ‘még érdemes hallani’ típusú zene. Most viszont a minőségi kontroll helyett működő bátorítás: “persze add ki, művész vagy, megcsináltad” rengeteg lelkes, de finoman szólva is fejlesztést igénylő albumot eredményez. Az évtized második felének nyilvánvaló nemtökéletességét képezi le a popzene? “Nem baj, a világ sincs rendben.” Mondjuk például 1996-ban elég sok szögből úgy nézett ki, hogy a Földön innentől már csak jobb lesz, abban a pillanatban nem szabadott félkész dolgot kiadni. És akkor hülyét tettetve megfeledkezem a 3T-ről és a Bush-ról.

Szóval, amelyik a legérdekesebben szól arról, ami van itt most, az zenei értelemben eddig 2019-ben talán nulla lemez volt. Ehhez zseniális újszerűség kellene, olyasmi, ami évek óta alig akad. Jól, szépen, megkapóan, érdekesen, egészen frissen megvalósított viszont mindig rengeteg lesz.

Eddig - ebben a vastagon kibővített januárban (február végén jóval rövidebb lista lesz) - egyrészt Rina Mushonga lemeze tetszett a legjobban. Nem tökéletes, a 9.0 kicsit túlzás, de a szerethetősége van akkora, hogy ellensúlyozza a nem annyira nagy hibákat. Ami engem zavar, hogy néha levakarhatatlanul florence-es az ének, de ez alighanem kevesek baja. Néha túl egyszerűek a szintihangok, nagyon kicsit befejezetlen hatásúak egyes részek. Viszont majdnem olyan jól gyúr egybe zsánereket, mint tavalyi lemezén Kali Uchis és ebben a popos melankóliában valahogy benne van 2019 eleje. Nem hallgattam még annyira sokszor, hogy meg tudjam fogalmazni, pontosan mitől mai, és mitől érdekesen mai amit mond, de van benne mit hallgatni, érdekel, fejteni akarom.

A másik eddigi idei kedvencem egy teljesen másmilyen lemez. Andrew Wasylyk albuma a békés félrevonulás zenéje, szemlélődő, pasztorálos. A kiindulás amolyan akusztikus gitáros-zongorás folk, amire a szokásosnál több ambient/drone-réteg került, de aztán még erre is egyre több fúvós-repetitív hangszerelés passzol tökéletesen.

Nivhek, azaz Grouper szokásos magas színvonal, téli lemez, ami lehet jó lesz nyári éjszaka is. Sharon Van Etten pedig olyat csinált, amit sokat kell hallgatni, hogy igazán hasson. DJ Healeren annyira rajta maradtam tavalyról, hogy még ezek a szösszenetek is nagyon tetszenek. A Yaké végre egy olyan angol rocklemez, ami maradéktalanul tetszik. Super Furry Animals ugrott be róla többször is, a Spiritualized-szálat csak utólag fedeztem fel. Bassekou Kouyate egyértelműen az elmúlt bő évtized egyik legnagyobb világzenei sztárja, mindegyik lemeze jó, ez most talán azért is tetszik annyira, mert a tempósabb, néha már rockkal is flörtölők után ez ismét akusztikusabb, elmerengőbb. A Stats amolyan 2010-es évekbeli Hard-Fi, Joose Keskitalo a finn szuperpszichedelikus, imádnivaló Paavoharju egyik tagja volt, eszetlen az egészen egyenes vonalú, friss szólólemeze. Rustin Man LP-je kicsit olyan, mintha az utolsó Talk Talk és az első .O.Rang között készült volna, némileg dalosabb szándékkal, nagyon jó. Nkisi a legjobb, friss tánczene eddig, Angel Bat Dawid nagyon erős szellős jazz, Dave Harrington jobb mint a Darkside-ban. A Lemonheads szuper feldolgozáslemezt adott ki, jobb mint a tíz évvel ezelőtti, Evan Dando bármikor úgy hangzik, mintha a saját dalát énekelné, tökéletes interpretáló. DAWN szokásos nagyon magas színvonalú r&b pop, mindig egy nagyon kevés hiányzik nekem ahhoz, hogy őrülten zseniálist kiáltva dobjam el tőle az agyam. Bigwave japán future funk-őrület, pc music-os diszkó, nem zárom ki, hogy hamar megunom, de egyelőre rajta vagyok. Emily King a neosoul felől szofisztipoposodott, amikor (ritkán) túl direkten haimos, akkor kevésbé, amikor organikusabb hangszerelésű, akkor nagyon tetszik. A Sister John egy kis skót indierockzenekar, egyszerű, nohipszter, notwee, klasszikus underdog, szép dalokkal. A Woman’s Hour egy beteljesítetlen reménység: az első lemeznek sokkal jobbnak kellett volna lennie, aztán meg nem kellett volna belerokkanniuk ennek a második lemeznek a készítésébe, amit most évekkel később mégis befejeztek és nagyon jól tették. Az ausztrál Methyl Ethel pedig lemezről-lemezre egyre jobb artpop, pontosabban szintis indie.

Ezek tetszettek a legjobban eddig. A második kupacban még olyanok vannak, amiket szerintem abszolút érdemes meghallgatni annak, aki bírja az adott stílust, a harmadik kupacban viszont már azok szerepelnek, amikhez rajongónak kell lenni és úgy sem kizárt a csalódás. Legalul meg, azokat hagyjuk.
