Merlin Christmas Fics ❄️
a merthur holiday fic rec list
all ye faithful by schweet_heart: After an eight and a half year absence, Arthur returns to his father’s house for Christmas, determined to find some closure and finally let go of the past. Merlin, as ever, gives him a reason to hold on.
It's That Time of the Year by rotrude: Merlin is a personal shopper at a high-end department store. He's tasked with helping Arthur, who's helpless when it comes to gift ideas for his demanding friends and family. Arthur soon finds that going shopping isn't that tremendous an ordeal
Kiss Me Under the Mistletoe by vintagelilacs: Merlin is dreading Camelot's annual Yule celebration—not only because he's never had a kiss under the mistletoe, but because the holiday festivities are a thinly veiled excuse for visiting princesses to try to capture Prince Arthur's heart. Arthur of course revels in the attention, and the chance to make Merlin jealous.
Tell the World We Finally Got it Alright by @ingberry: It’s the most beautiful time of the year and Merlin can’t wait to open his regular stall at the Ealdor Christmas Festival for weeks of handmade cards, wreaths, ice skating, not so secret Secret Santas, and cozy evenings with friends and family. But when newcomers Morgana and Arthur mistakenly intrude on his territory, Merlin isn’t sure he can embrace the season and overcome bad first impressions.
To Make The Season Bright by ingberry: Merlin swaps houses with Morgana Pendragon over Christmas only to end up with a house guest that wasn't part of the deal.
blow cold the season by schweet_heart: It’s Yuletide in Camelot, but things are far from merry. Homesick for the familiar traditions of Ealdor, Merlin can’t help feeling lost amidst the hustle and bustle of castle life, and it doesn’t help that Arthur has been in a terrible mood recently. Fortunately, as the longest night commences, Merlin comes up with a way to cheer them both up—and maybe give destiny a helping hand into the bargain.
It Didn't Mean Anything by ingberry: Merlin Emrys: receptionist at Camelot Inn and magic user in training, not yet certified. When something unexpected happens, Merlin has to use his magic to save Arthur. It has rather impractical consequences, to say the least. Merlin’s not entirely sure how they’re both going to get through this with their sanities intact.
Sweet Dreams of Mistletoe by katherynefromphilly: What could be make the winter holidays worse for Arthur than having to entertain the surly King Olaf and his still-entirely-love-smitten daughter Lady Vivian? Why, doing it during an outbreak of magical mistletoe all over Camelot castle, of course!

Their colleagues are fed up, the kids are okay, Merlin and Arthur can't catch a break, and everyone loves Gwen. So not much different than canon. (Frottage, no top/bottom)

Slaves – Rec List for Merlin Bingo
This is a rec list for the square ‘Slaves’ on Merlin Bingo and should finally complete a line. I’ve listed a long fic, a mid-sized one and a short one.

This is a canon au, a long fic and well worth a read but do heed the warnings.
Arthur is prone to fits of madness (known as the mad prince of Camelot) and so is forced to share power with his uncle ‘for the good of the kingdom’. Of course it is anything but.
This is a compassionate Arthur who takes Merlin as his slave in order to protect Merlin from Kanen. There’s a lovely slow burn romance. It’s a fandom classic for a reason.

Rotrude’s historical aus are always a satisfying read. This one is a 35k Viking au where Arthur is a Jarl, the king’s son. He finds Merlin having his virginity auctioned out and decides to buy him. Merlin doesn’t speak the language and things don’t go well once Arthur’s got him home. Again there is a slow romance as Arthur gains Merlin’s affection, but the plot continues with added twists beyond that.

This is just under 1000 words and was written for Pornalot. Arthur is the slave in this one, but there’s nothing subservient about him (not that there is about Merlin either in the previous two). Merlin is the son of the druid leader who has defeated Camelot. He’s given Arthur as a slave. It’s an interesting little story squeezed into such a small word count and it leaves you wishing that there was a much longer fic.

hi!! i'm looking for a fic i read awhile ago that i can't stop thinking about and i was wondering if you knew it?? it's about arthur being basically "the bachelor" and he has girls and boys at the castle trying to win his heart and him and merlin become good friends but merlin is also part of like an undercover magic thing?? and arthur finds out?? do you know it?? thanks so much!!

But there’s also The Heart’s Search by Rotrude
I haven’t read it, but it might be the one you’re looking for. It’s based on a novel, similar premise to The Bachelor where a bunch of people are competing for Arthur’s hand in marriage. It has a dystopian setting so if there could be an undercover magic resistance, and I think it takes place in a castle.

Summary: 1740, Young Queen Maria Theresa of Austria sends Hauptmann Arthur Pendrachen and Leutnant Oberarzt Merlin Emriß to Transylvania, currently belonging to the Austrian Crown, with the task of dissuading the locals from believing in legends and myths that are archaic, provincial and frankly absurd. This is the Century of Philosphers, the Age of Enlightment and the state must spread rationality and scientific thinking all around! In short Pendrachen and Emriß are to drive some sense into those credulous peasants who still believe in the undead, also known as vârcolaci, moroi -- vampires.It all starts to plan, but their journey journey ends up being fraught with less Enlightment and more peril than they'd wagered for.
