i just can't get over the fact that yang expected tai to be there.

after returning to remnant and getting to shade, yang and ruby have probably witnessed weiss and maybe even blake reunite with their own families. and qrow is there. raven is there. people who made it out of vale are there, the fucking bubba bubba boba shop is there, having relocated to vacuo from patch.

but tai isn't, and it's weird. unexpected, so uncharacteristic that yang has to wonder why, the answer she has been given unsatisfying because what could be more important than being there? what could possibly keep their father, who they know to be someone who worries a lot and at times is a bit overprotective, away from vacuo where everyone is preparing for the final stand?

and it's pulling at my heartstrings like they miss their dad so much and it's just so 🥺

(and ya know also slightly worried for tai's state of mind like does this man know his daughters are alive and back on remnant has anyone kept him updated like please tell me he's not super depressed somewhere thinking his daughters are dead preparing for his own final stand against the impossible just to keep the crown safe bc what does he have left anymore the last time we saw him was alone with zwei in a dark room like hello??? health check????)

Yang bringing up Tai in this conversation was great for two reasons. The first being that it ties into why they are even there having the conversation in the first place. It highlights Yang's responsibility as a sister as well, as Ruby's struggle with not knowing how to ask for help. And both of these things can be traced back to their childhoods; where they lost one parent to an unknown fate, and the other to his grief. Tai was right in front of them, but his feelings at the time were so big that they took priority over his kids needs. And that sort of complex trauma sticks with a person. For Yang, it became the responsibility to look after her baby sister (something she prioritized and wanted distance from at the same time), and for Ruby, it became an instilled belief that asking for help makes her a burden. That it was better to carry it all alone than risk stressing any of her caretakers with more than they were already dealing with. The second thing, is it pretty much confirms where the Relic of Choice is? Yang, when speaking of Tai's absence, asks: "what's more important than here"? And that's the only loose thread left, isn't it?

Atlas is gone, Vale suffered a second attack, and the refugees of both fled to Vacuo. Mistral is the only other kingdom still standing, but Salem already has their relic. So she doesn't have any need to go back and bother them. But Tai is still in Patch, he's not joining the fight, because there is only one thing more important than protecting the Sword of Destruction... and that's protecting the Crown of Choice.

Not to mention Patch, by definition, is:

(noun) a piece of cloth or other material used to mend or strengthen a torn or weak point.

(verb) mend or strengthen (fabric or an item of clothing) by putting a piece of material over a hole or weak point in it.

And while Vale specifically references a valley, the name is a homophone. It shares the same sound as words with different spellings and meanings. Namely with Vail: a verb meaning to take off or lower (one's hat or crown) as a token of respect or submission; and Veil: a cloth headpiece specifically designed to conceal, cover, or disguise.

Which is just one of those multilayered poetries that RWBY really loves. A valley (or veil) that conceals the crown of choice beneath a Patch.

My favorite thing about the Rwby Beyond episode "Boba" has got to be the touching on small things. Like yeah they had the big conversation and I love it. But also Vacou citizens recognizing Ruby and Ruby...being awkward with it. Willing to take pictures with them but the little "Am I taking the picture?" moment was adorable. And how drained she was after because Ruby still isn't good with big crowds and being admired being new to her. How excited she was about the boba and "I can't believe you downplayed this" to Yang. Yangs awkwardness because she knows the conversation they're going to have and isn't sure how to broach it. And yes. Touching back on "normal girl with normal knees" I am still flying high and no one can bring me down.

I've been taking a bunch of screenshots from RWBY Beyond: Boba, using my trick of watching until the end and then manually sliding along the progress bar to avoid 'PAUSED' taking up the screen.

However, that didn't work for moments like this:

Yang's wink isn't on screen long enough for sliding back to a given second to capture it. This took a few tries, but I got her in the end.

Although I do question what the purpose of water spilling out of that building is. Is it a public sink/water fountain? If so, I thought Vacuo had a water shortage?

Whoops im trying to be nice Um can I just say that the coloring on Yang's outfit here is waay better than her 3D model:

The coffee brown + dark yellow vs super dark brown + green brown. I don't think I will be able to look at her 3D model the same, and I already hated it.

Very ironic that rw/by simps were clowning on us for correctly saying that Yang was not acting the best during v9 and Yang herself apologizes for it here. I understand some people's criticisms of this being too late, but honestly if they never addressed it it would have been a black mark on Yang's character so better late than never.

qrow only told them it's an assignment tai's on, not giving any sort of idea what that may entail. and if that sticks, if this is one of those "play things close to the chest" things he talks about, then chances of yang and ruby getting any answers out of him are low—unless they pester him for answers and he finally relents lol

but if they were to ask raven—assuming she knows / figured it out on her own—, she... might not give a direct answer, but her whole shtick was to ask questions, look at the information they do have and come to a conclusion.

raven would tell them to think, get them on the right track.

and the fact is... ruby and yang have all the information they need to come to the right conclusion if tai is protecting the crown.

oh, everybody else is in vacuo but their dad isn't when they expected him to be? what could be more important? tai's a member of team strq, he knew about the secret war before it went public, he's gone on missions for ozpin before, so what could he be up to? why does salem target the academies? isn't it weird how beacon fell a year ago and she doesn't have the crown yet? ruby knows ozpin made it more challenging to find, what could that entail? etc etc etc.

the answer yang is fishing for is right there. they just need to think.
