Hi everybody I read all of witch hat atelier and my final review is uh uh it's so good I'm so excited to see it updated. you really do get invested in every single characters growth and tha world building?? 🤨🤨 Unmatched

my favorite character is sage beldaruit :) I was actually afraid he would be surprise-evil because I never saw people talk about him and I think he's just so spectacular why wouldn't you. also just a special treat to me that a character I like has chronic illness too...and he's so sillay

So...how much of this is a medical condition and how much is due to him not being able to use his chair to stand and walk like he normally does, due to the castle being enchanted to render contraptions useless?

I found it interesting that the king lends a hand to heal an issue that might be only occuring because Bel is staying at his castle.

It'd add an uncomfortable layer to the power play in this chapter - on top of the political play between king and sage, witch and unknowing, someone who guards magic and someone who wants magic; we might have a doctor and a patient, but one who's ails are indirectly created by said doctor.

Beldaruit says himself it would be impossible for him to handle this situation with autonomy, as as a witch he or his entourage isn't allowed to touch medecine. He also made the decision of showing up to the castle even if that means not being able to walk in his chair, decision backed by his role in politics/diplomacy. The chapter where the Sages meet Dean already had this notion of who rules over who, an answer who is supposed to legally be "no one, witches are independent and factionless" - but in practice, witches control the unknowing by gatekeeping their magic already. How different is it for Dean to wish to control the witches and wield their power? :)

Ok, little thing that made me crack up during my reread. This panel appears at the end of chapter 47 as the Knights come to escort the three Sages. Right afterwards (chapter 48), Lagler introduces himself to Estheath as the new Sage of Friendship.

Except Engendill is right there. Like, right there, behind Lagler. And later in the chapter he’s clearly dumbfounded about being detained, and Beldaruit points out they had to lock him up in the castle where no magic can be cast. So either it’s a continuity error (which seems unlikely), or the scene goes:

Lagler : Hi, new Sage of Friendship here, I hope we’ll be besties <3

Engendill : new wHAT *immediately gets decked by Vinanna*

Coming Home (vague Witch Hat Atelier spoilers)

Beldaruit x gender neutral witch!reader cw: fluff, age gap (reader is around mid 20s)

You stretch and take in the bustle of the city around you. Being back in the great hall isn’t your preferred choice but it beats sleeping on straw mats. Also helps that your favorite person is here. You purchase a meat bun from a nearby vendor and heft your travel pack over your shoulder.

The garden is empty when you step in, as expected. You say hello to your favorite trees and breathe in the salty air. An adventurous homebody is a strange combination, but what are you if not made of contradictions?

You make your way through the special door hidden within the silverwood trees. Twists and turns take you to familiar doors and you hesitate. A stop at the bathhouse might have been better but you so desperately want to collapse on soft sheets and pillows.

You knock in a coded pattern and the doors open like arms welcoming you inside. You tiptoe around the room hoping to surprise its occupant but the bed is made and empty. There aren’t a lot of places a sealchair can hide here. The disappointment feels like a stone.

“Damn, I’ll have to wait—“

“Wait for what?”

You shriek and turn around. The great sage, Beldaruit, sits before you dressed in his full regalia. Pale blue eyes light up with mirth.

“You are such an insufferable person,” you sigh. “Is this even you or an apparition?”

“Oh foo, you’re as bad as Olruggio.” The visage fades into smoke, and the lights flicker on illuminating the real Beldaruit laying in bed.

You roll your eyes and take the seat by his side, divesting yourself of your shoes and cloak. “I’m sure you’ll find some way to really surprise me in the coming days.”

His eyes twinkle. “If you had returned earlier you would’ve seen quite a sight.”

“Hm?”

“Qifrey’s apprentices had their second test interrupted and I let them make it up. I wanted to be surprised.”

There are few situations that require the sage of wisdom’s input, he must’ve been quite excited. “Were you?”

His face lights up with a dazzling smile and he excitedly grasps your hands. “It was wonderful! They took such common spells and created such beauty. They even opened a path that my chair could fit through.”

His joy is infectious and you find yourself smiling. If children could figure out how to make the hall accessible what are their leaders’ excuses? If it wouldn’t be considered vandalism, you’d carve glyphs into every nook and cranny.

He bounces your hands. “Absolutely marvelous! It’s a treasure to see such passion in young children.”

Ah, he’s started. You deftly climb to the empty space beside him, sinking in the bedding. It’s not that you don’t love his passion but you’re a bit tired. He tells you about the spells, the rain and sunlight reflected through gate doors. The mimicry pouch and rainbows that shined.

He finishes with a pained breath. You bolt upright and grip his hand. “Belda—“

He squeezes back and smiles. “I’m fine, just a little tired from an excursion.”

“I’ll make you some tea.”

He pulls you to his chest and rests his cheek upon your head.

You pout but relax in his hold. Today isn’t the time for such a serious discussion.

“Some days I wonder what keeps you interested in an old fart like me.” He mumbles this into your hair and the vibrations tickles.

You run a few fingers through his hair, twirl a strand. “I’m pretty boring so I guess it works out.”

“You’re far from boring. I remember a certain incident involving dancing cleaning supplies.”

“You know how much I hate chores. Besides, don’t sell yourself short. You’re the most passionate person I know. The dedication and love you have for magic is inspiring.”

You lean up and kiss his cheek. The slight blush and widening of his eyes make you giggle.

“Compliments and kisses? You’re rarely this affectionate. Did something happen?”

You shrug. “No. I just really missed you. I’ll tell you about the stuff I saw—“ you yawn, “tomorrow.”

As the author, Shirahama could have done better than to present Qifrey's backstory matter-of-factly from the biased point of view of Beldaruit, the so-called Sage of Education who doesn't understand his own apprentice.

Why does Luluci get to make a point about the gravity of the wrongs done to her and have understanding and kindness from the Knights Moralis when Coco, Qifrey, Agott, Richeh, Tartah, Eunie, and Dagda have never been given the same chance?

rereading witch hat atelier again and man this stuff's so good. i'm a lil eh about some of the choices for the official translation though

stuff like brush bug turning into brush buddy is alright, as well as sigils-signs-rings, contraptions, and other miscellaneous technical magic terms, though calling it seals instead of spells is kind of a downgrade for me. spells just sounds better you know? and it makes the correlation between drawing and magic less obvious

but brim hats just sounds better than brimmed caps, hands-down. the three sages being translated as three wise ones would've been alright, except they try to call beldaruit "the wise of teachings" like??? no one talks in english like that??? and the Ye Olde English they tried to give the romonons was pretty grammatically atrocious

He’s one of my favourites if not my favourite character in witch hat atelier and is so fun! I tried sketching him last year around this time though it didn’t turn out as good but I hope this one did him better justice.
