Baba came up with the plan: a series of dropoffs, which will make tracking Deva and Amma more difficult. The fifth driver said that he was supposed to hand them over to the next driver in Hyderabad. When he went away to get them some food in the morning and returned, Deva and Amma were gone. After Deva and Amma's escape from Khansaar, Raja Mannar had his goons round up everyone involved in the matter.
All the seven drivers and Baba were beaten brutally and imprisoned. The fifth driver was tortured the most. He pleaded for his life but he never changed his answer.
Varadha remembers that he was slapped by his father across his face so hard that he fell to the ground. He remembers his father spat on the floor and walked away. After that, the rest of that day was blurry.
The search for Deva and Amma continued.
Now, Varadha's only priority was to get Baba and the drivers out of prison. He requested to meet his father everyday to no avail. He met every Dhora who gave him a chance. Most of them only agreed to meet him to reiterate his pathetic position and feel superior. Those who were sympathetic wanted him to let go of this issue, clean his hands of it and let others bear the burden of his decisions. They wanted him to understand his luck that he is not dead or rotting in prison because his father spared him.
Varadha did not stop. He and Baachi needed Baba. The only solace Varadha had during this year was his brother. Baachi was only 5 years old and he missed Baba very much. Varadha played with his brother and dodged every question the kid had about Baba, their mother or their father. He lied that Aai is in heaven because she turned into an angel on his birthday. He lied that their father doesn't visit them anymore because he is an astronaut on the moon. He lied that Baba will come home soon after defeating all the evil monsters in the forest. Because Baachi was only a child, he didn't need the truth. He only needed a story. Sometimes, Varadha only needed a story to get through the day.
Months passed. Every second ticking at the slowest pace.
Varadha celebrated New Year 1986 in the balcony of their house with his brother sitting in his lap. Baachi was giggling and clapping his chubby fists when he saw the fireworks light up in the sky. Varadha hugged him tightly and desperately wished for Aai, Baba, Amma and Deva to appear before him. He just wanted to celebrate the New Year with his family.

Malayadhwaja Pandyan in Mahabharata
Pandya, who dwelt on the coast-land near the sea, came accompanied by troops of various kinds to Yudhishthira.
This Pandya king is addressed by two names in the epic - Malayadhwaja and Sarangadhwaja. 'Malaya' and 'Saranga' both mean "sandalwood" and the name is derived from the Tripuranthaka aspect of Shiva, who made Malaya mountains (named for the Sandal trees that grow on it) his yoke during the burning of the triple cities. He is a very fascinating character.
During Yuddhishtira's Rajasuya, Pandya and Chola monarchs brought gifts which were accepted, but they were not allowed inside.
And the Kings of Chola and Pandya, though they brought numberless jars of gold filled with fragrant sandal juice from the hills of Malaya, and loads of sandal and aloe wood from the Dardduras hills, and many gems of great brilliancy and fine cloths inlaid with gold, did not obtain permission (to enter).

It was he [Krishna] that slew King Pandya by striking his breast against his . . .
He yearned for vengeance and trained under the renowned teachers of that era for that purpose. Even if he couldn't have killed Krishna, he was capable of causing great damage, as we can see later. But he listened to good counsel and gave up his revenge fantasies for the greater good. Very admirable indeed.
The mighty Sarangadhvaja . . . his country having been invaded and his kinsmen having fled, his father had been slain by Krishna in battle. Obtaining weapons then from Bhishma and Drona, Rama and Kripa, prince Sarangadhvaja became, in weapons, the equal of Rukmi and Karna and Arjuna and Achyuta.
He then desired to destroy the city of Dvaraka and subjugate the whole world. Wise friends, however, from desire of doing him good, counselled him against that course. Giving up all thoughts of revenge, he is now ruling his own dominions.
One can even say that Malayadhwajan became a karmayogi before Krishna advised Gita to Arjunan, by not chasing personal glory and fighting selflessly for the people who were consistently bad to his clan.
Praised as "hardly inferior to Indra on the field of battle" and "followed when he fights by numberless warriors of great courage", Malayadhwajan led one of the 7 akshauhinis of the Pandava faction and fought valiantly until the 16th day of the battle. I don't understand what was he doing with those Pandavas who wouldn't let him or his father (I not sure about the timeline) enter the Rajasuya yajnasala.
On the 16th day, as he was destroying Karna's army which "began to turn round like the potter's wheel", Ashwatthama challenged him to one-to-one combat. When he fought Ashwatthama, Karna destroyed the army that surrounded him and Ashwatthama destroyed his chariot, as his arrows were unable to pierce the King himself. The epic says that Ashwatthama was quite excited by this fight and didn't slay Pandyan when he got an opening because he wanted to fight for some more time. Malayadhwajan climbed a stray elephant and threw lances at Ashwatthama who narrowly escaped with his beautiful crown shattered. This infuriated him and he killed the king, his elephant and the final six warriors that followed their Lord.
At this, Ashvatthama blazed up with exceeding rage . . . and took up four and ten shafts capable of inflicting great pain upon foes. . . with three the two arms and the head of the king, and with six he slew the six mighty car-warriors, endued with great effulgence, that followed king Pandya . . .

Sadly, Varadha could not take Baba home when he was released from prison. He and the drivers were so terribly thin and ill. Varadha did not allow Baachi to visit Baba. He was afraid that Baachi will not recognise Baba or worse that he will get scared of him.
Varadha decided that he will take whatever bit of grace he can get from his father. He negotiated medical needs and hospital accomodations for Baba and the drivers with his father's assistant, Krishnakanth. He made sure that he and Baachi would get more allowance per month because now, he would have to support the drivers and their families also.
He just needed to keep everything afloat until Baba recovers. After that, he can be a kid again.
By the end of May, Baba recovered. The drivers were all back with their families but none of them were able to find work.
"They can only work for us now", Baba said wisely. He and Varadha were in his office. Varadha was thinking about the bottles of whiskey stacked in the desk's bottom drawer. He drank four bottles in the last few months. Now, he was coming up with a plan to steal more bottles when Baba fell asleep.
Baba snapped his fingers and repeated, "Varadha, the drivers can only work for us now. We have to give them work."
"What work can we offer them? We don't have anything to transport in and out of Khansaar. If there are any such jobs, there are many vultures in this city who will snatch them from our hands.", Varadha answered.
"But have you met with any Kaapus or Dhoras? There are all sort of items we can trade. There is always business in Khansaar. You just have to look in the right places.", Baba argued.
"And remember, we can charge less for the first few years. After we build a good reputation, we can raise the charges."
"I am trying to think of whom we can meet. No one wants to partner with me, Baba. No one will even touch us with a ten foot pole.", Varadha drawled.
"Powerful people will never fully reveal what their actual thoughts are. Greedy people will change their stances as soon as you offer them a chance to make more money. Lucky for you, in Khansaar, every powerful person is greedy. So, you have to knock on every Kaapu and Dhora's door.", Baba urged.
Varadha sighed. "Okay."
As Varadha got up to leave, Baba spoke again.
"Don't steal anymore whiskey bottles, Varadha"
Varadha stopped in his tracks and his face turned pale.
Baba continued, "If you really want to drink, let me know. We will drink together. Don't drink alone or when you are sad."
Varadha nodded and left Baba's office.
