First impressions on Sasaki and Peeps
Or not really first impressions since I'm almost halfway through the show, but I thought it'd be blog-appropriate to wait until the magical girl character properly debuts and that took longer than I expected.
(spoilers up to episode 5)
Tumblr media
So this is one of those stories that mixes tropes from various genres, and magical girls is one of them. The main character Sasaki is an office worker who doesn't have a lot going on in his life, so he buys a pet bird. The bird turns out to be some kind of reincarnated superwizard, and grants Sasaki absurd magical powers. Then Sasaki gets isekaid and makes a lot of money trading regular household items in the isekai world where they're a rarity, founds a restaurant, ends up in a secret Japanese state organisation that manages rampant psychics, starts playing both sides in this psychic conflict, gets involved in a war in the isekai world, all while trying to hide his power level that vastly surpasses everyone else. And now finally a magical girl has appeared too.
So far I've had a good time, the tone is upbeat and there's always something new going on with this show. It's been a while since I've watched an anime where I have no idea what its deal is. Sasaki is a fun character, how he's a mellow guy who wanted a peaceful life in the isekai world, but he just calmly rolls with whatever insanity is thrown his way. I also like that he's a proper adult who is able to slither his way out of tricky situations due to his job experience in business and always somehow lands on his feet.
The magical girl is of the edgy type, or at least she's introduced as killing psychics (the tone of the story so far suggests that Sasaki will solve the situation by talking though). I don't particularly like her based on the first impressions, she has that specific kind of monotone and emotionless delivery that usually doesn't work for me in violent kid characters. But she only just appeared so we'll see where this goes.
Finally the bird makes for a fun mascot, being grandiose and overpowered while also being a cute pet bird.

I don’t know if this one’s been asked before, but for your character ask game, thoughts on Kenjaku?
My first impression: My immediate first question was "the hell going on with the stitches..."
My impression now: Oh, yeah, Kenjaku is definitely a problem... but damn it, they are entertaining!
Favorite thing about that character: It's so funny to me that Kenjaku is this brain that somehow caused more issues than Sukuna does.
Least favorite thing: It's not even a bad thing, just I wish there was just a tad bit more of what the Heian Era was like for them. However, I'm all up for using my imagination for that.
Favorite line/scene: Ooh, there is a couple, but I have to go with their exit scene at the end of Shibuya. Overall, just that whole bit from Yuji and Kenjaku first crossing paths to the exit is my one of my favorite scenes. But OMG, when it got animated??? The music, the voice acting, the animation with all the curses and everyone was just... I loved that!!!
Favorite interaction that character has with another: I did like the whole Kenjaku vs. Takaba bit. That felt like a fever dream, but it was funny and I liked it!!
A character that I wish that character would interact with more: The Itadori Family. The only thing I hate (not really) about the exit scene from the Shibuya Arc is that it's the last time we seen Kenjaku interact with Yuji. Unfair, I say, unfair! I wished there had been more scenes with what it was like Kenjaku!Kaori in the Itadori household. I wished there had been at least one more scene where Kenjaku and Yuji crossed paths again.
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: All For One from My Hero Academia. A big bad who is a terrible parent, causes problems for everyone, has body hopped, philosophies, and has multiple powers?
A headcanon about that character: Oooh, do I have a headcanon for Kenjaku? Okay, I do. I actually mention this in my Blissfully Clueless fic. I headcanon that Kenjaku can sew. It just makes sense to me that over the years they picked it up as a hobby and come on, the stitches thing? I wouldn't be surprised if they did make a baby blanket for Yuji.
A song that reminds of that character: Every time now I hear a piano or a violin I'm going to think back to that song that played during their exit scene.
An unpopular opinion about that character: I think this would also count as a headcanon, but I think that Kenjaku tends to also act like the person whose body they inhabit at that time. Like, Suguru and Kenjaku are totally two different people, don't get me wrong (before someone freaks out). But I think during the year of inhabiting Suguru's body, Kenjaku does pick up his traits. That scene when they started laughing, they mentioned "I'm starting to act like him". I had a feeling they meant Suguru. What if, hear me out, Kenjaku didn't have their own personality to begin with? But the more bodies they possess, the more personalities they pick up and it just jumbled into the Kenjaku we know today?
Favorite picture: Okay, I will always be tickled at this scene in 160 because it's like... imagine being Sasaki who was sleeping and then you see this standing over you.

Our Love Will Never Die; Ayaka x Multiple (Thoma, Kazuha, NPC)
CHAPTER ONE
In the heart of Chinju forest lay the abode of the Kamisato Clan. They’d been there for centuries, establishing a strong influence over the Yashiro commission. After the demise of Lord and Lady Kamisato, Ayato Kamisato, the elder of the two Kamisato siblings was crowned as the Lord of the Household and the Yashiro Commissioner. Inside the estate sat a council of ministers, surrounding the Lord Kamisato. The topic of discussion; the future of the Kamisato Clan. Very precisely; the issue of Lady Kamisato’s marriage in order to produce heirs. The council members had brought in several prospects. One of the most contested ones was General Gorou of Watatsumi Island. His influence spread all across Watatsumi and him and Ayato had become close friends over the war as Ayato had secretly aided the resistance. Priestess Kokomi had taken a vow of chastity which meant that a match between her and Ayato was impossible. Which made General Gorou the next best prospect. This idea was however rejected as it did not make much sense logistically and the people of Watatsumi would never accept the influence of the Kamisatos especially through marriage. The second option was to wed her to Sasaki Hiiragi of the Hiiragi Clan. The heir to the Hiiragi clan and the overseer of the port of Ritou. Marriage there would create a stronghold. But Ayato figured that the Hiiragis were a weaker clan and a political marriage would be wasted on them. All Ayato needed to do was bide his time and wait for them to be in need of financial assistance. That’s how he’d reel them in. Someone suggested the Raiden Shogun herself but this idea did not even make it to the table. The Shogun had no need for a marriage of convenience. And Ayato’s goal was to spread the influence of the Kamisato family over Inazuma. They finally settled on Kamaji Kujou, the new leader of the Kujou Clan. Their clan had been in turmoil since the Vision Hunt Decree ended. They’d jump at a chance to marry Lady Ayaka. And then Ayato would have them eating out of his palm. He smiled in contentment as the council members made further arrangements to further this marriage agreement.
Lord Ayato stood tall over six feet and had a stern and menacing presence. When he spoke his entire council would fall silent. Though no older than 20 himself, he held a strong influence over the political matters of Inazuma. But his ambition was to never stop. He’d never stop until he had all of Inazuma in his palms. Lady Ayaka Kamisato was a woman grown at the sweet age of 21. Though younger than Lord Ayato, she handled the affairs of the Kamisato Household and was a warrior skilled beyond her years. She had already bested Lord Ayato in combat and he respected her in that sense, holding her in equal regard as himself. Lady Ayaka was described as ladylike and polite but she was also strong headed, independent and was known to always speak her mind. Lady Ayaka; the only person missing from her own marriage proposal meeting. She was off, as always doing what she liked. She was down in one of the foothills under the Narukami shrine, her skirt hiked up to her waist. She was bent over, back arched and on her hands and knees, the jacket of her dress ripped off and her corset pulled down leaving her breasts to hang out. Moans escaped her mouth as the blonde thrusted into her with great speed. Here she was again, sowing her oats with Chief Retained Thoma again. It had been on going thing for the past two years. She had seen him first when he arrived at the estate, a tall blonde man with a bright red Vision. His accent suggested he was from Mondstadt and he was asking Ayato for a job. Her brother had hired her and ever since then Thoma had dutifully taken care of the Kamisato household. Her obsession of him had grown immensely and the only thing she thought about was him, day and night. Almost every night she’d find herself thinking about him and would have to relieve her wetness with her fingers. One night when she couldn’t take it anymore, she summoned him to her room. How cluelessly he had walked in. “Are you having trouble sleeping, My Lady? Shall I brew some tea?” he had asked. She had stood in front of him, fully naked, her wet cunt and perky breasts on display. It had positively scandalised him. “Thoma,” she rasped, “Come serve me,” she sauntered over to him. “Deflower me and make me yours.” She whispered tracing a wet kiss down his cheek. He had obliged and they hadn’t kept their hands off each other ever since. They’d fuck almost every night; either in her quarters or his. Sometimes when the staff had been ushered off to handle commission work, he’d fuck her right in the yard. They had fucked on the very tables where political strategies would be thrown about. They’d do it in forests, by lakes, by the riverside. Anywhere that they could. Their passion burned like ice and fire, their Visions always burned brightly when they’d be entangled with one another. Same as now, Ayaka’s knees scrapped against the ground as Thoma rammed into her from behind with great intensity. “Did you hear?” he said between breaths. “Your brother is wedding you to Kamaji.” Thoma said. Ayaka scoffed. “Could you not talk about me being another man’s wife while you’re still inside me?” She replied. In response he began fucking her even harder. Ayaka moaned his name like a prayer. This was the best pleasure she’d ever received. The way he’d tear into her walls. She felt him tighten soon and knew he was going to cum. Her own dam burst soon enough and she squirted her juices all over his dick which he kept pumping into her. Soon after he came all over her thighs, a feeling Ayaka relished. Fucked out and spent, she turned over and lay on his stomach as he lay down in the grass. She traced circles on his chest absent mindedly as shethought about what he had said. “Will you do it? Will you marry him?” Thoma finally asked. “I have no choice in this matter,” she replied, “If Ayato wants me wed to him, then wed to him I will be.” They lay there in silence, basking in each other’s company, considering the possibility that this maybe the last time they could experience it.
The wedding preparations were in full swing and the entire city was abuzz with the news of their union. Ayaka had approached Ayato earlier to make a request. “Brother, you decided it was best to wed me to Kamaji and I agreed. I have always done my duty to you and this house. I only ask for one thing in return.” “What is it you what?” Ayato quizzed. Ayaka huffed. “Give me Thoma. I will take him with me to the Kujou household. I feel safe having him around.” Ayato considered her request for quite some time before finally agreeing. Soon the day would come when she married Kamaji Kujou in the Narukami Shrine. She saw him there for the first time. He was no older than 25 himself and a plain and simple man. So very plain. Ayaka tried not to roll her eyes too hard. Yae Guuji had officiated the ceremony and they were wed before the council of tree lords. Yae had sauntered over to her slyly and slipped her a powder. “It’s a potion. Helps with performance…in the bedroom.” she winked and left. Ayaka entered the household of the Kujous. Her hand entangled with Kamaji’s, her new Lord Husband. Thoma trailed behind silently, his head hung low like a dutiful servant. Behind all three of them trailed Kujou Sara, watching them like hawk. Kamaji stopped before the estate and turned to Sara. “General Kujou, please show Thoma to the kitchens. Since he has been appointed as our new Chief Retainer he must familiarise himself with the duties.” Sara nodded and led Thoma away. Ayaka entered their shared chambers as Kamaji shut the door behind him. Now was the difficult part; bedding this poor old fool. On their bedside were two flutes of wine which Ayaka graciously accepted. Kamaji down the entire flute in two sips before setting it down. Ayaka softly huffed before disrobing herself lightly, her undergments still on. She climbed into bed, urging him to do so as well. He climbed in, stumbling a bit but finally regaining his posture. He kissed her sloppily, trying to undo the straps of her undergarments. She laid down underneath him as he went to work, hoping that it’d just end sooner or enough. “My lady,” he slurred. She looked up at him, tense wondering if he was alright. Suddenly, he went limp and collapsed on top of her with a plop. Alarmed she tried pushing him off and on his back, trying to resuscitate him. He had passed out and from god knows what. The door to their chambers opened slightly and a slender figure sauntered in. “Thoma! Something’s wrong with him!” she said. “I know, my love.” His voice was as cool as ice. She cocked her head at him. “Just a mild sedative. He’ll be fine in the morning.” “Wh…” Ayaka trailed off as realisation dawn on her. “Now you didn’t think I’d just stand by and watch as he bedded you, now did you?”
Ayaka plopped Kamaji on the ground lightly before giggling as Thoma climbed on top of her. There she was, consummating on her wedding night. But with a man who was not her husband

New Year's Mochitsuki
"Yu Yu Hakusho 100% Maji Battle" New Year Event
This event was first held in the New Year of 2021.
Tumblr media
Around the start of the New Year, many Japanese households will take part in the annual tradition of mochitsuki, the pounding of rice to make mochi (rice cake). The tradition of mochitsuki consists in pounding the rice grains, placed in a big mortar, with a wooden mallet. Once the rice grains are no longer visible and the dough has reached the right level of consistency, the mochi is ready to be shaped. There are also competitions to see who can pound the rice fastest and hardest.
Tumblr media
In this story, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama visit Master Genkai on New Year. Grandma is playing a game, but she can't defeat a certain boss. Yusuke tries to play in her place, but he's also having trouble beating them in the rice pounding level.
Video:
youtube
Translation:
Tumblr media
"New Year's Mochi Pounding"
Tumblr media
Yusuke: Ooi, baa-san! We came to eat the zouni soup!
T/N: Zouni is a Japanese soup containing mochi rice cakes, a New Year tradition.
Tumblr media
Yusuke: ...No reply. Besides, what's this shout?
Tumblr media
Yusuke: Oooooi … hey, what are you doing here?
Tumblr media
Genkai: Can't you even say a single greeting, jeez. Happy New Year, I guess.
Tumblr media
Kurama: She's right, Yusuke. Happy New Year!
Tumblr media
Hiei: ...Humpf
Tumblr media
Kuwabara: Oh, baa-san. Have a great year! We thought we heard strange voices, but it's the game.
Tumblr media
Genkai: It's like a New Year's action game. I've just suffered a series of consecutive defeats to the boss, and reached an impasse.
Tumblr media
Yusuke: Leave the action to me! I'll beat baa-san's record in a heartbeat!
Tumblr media
Genkai: You don't say! Then, please play it in my place.
[Yusuke plays the game...]
Tumblr media
Yusuke: I, I lost again ... What's going on at the mochitsuki level...!?
Tumblr media
Kuwabara: To defeat the Boss Brothers, you have to quickly pound 100 times per second, and raise the power gauge to 100% out of 100%.
Tumblr media
Yusuke: That seems impossible … I mean, I feel like this reminds me of something, and I'm getting distracted…
T/N: Certain brothers as the boss in a game, 100% of 100% … I wonder what is bothering Yusuke (lol).
Tumblr media
Kuwabara: What is it, an excuse for losing? Shall Kuwabara-sama change this situation?
Tumblr media
Yusuke: Shut up! I'm gonna play until I win!
Tumblr media
Genkai: Things are lively early in the New Year! Here, some zouni.
Tumblr media
Kurama: Thank you very much. Shall we warm up Yusuke and the others' portions later?
Tumblr media
Hiei: …If they don't want it, I'll eat theirs too.
T/N: In the 2020 New Year event, Hiei didn't want to have any mochi, and now he wants to eat Yusuke and Kuwabara's share. I guess he's enjoying the food of the Human World. ^^
Tumblr media
Kurama: Oh, be careful not to eat too much.
Tumblr media
Yusuke: Damn it!!! Mochitsu Brothers, I'll beat you!!!
Tumblr media
........ (sound of rice being squashed)
Tumblr media
???: Let's go, big brother...!
Tumblr media
???: Come on, younger brother…!
Tumblr media
Younger Toguro: This year will be the year for us brothers to thrive!
-The End-
I guess even Yusuke is no match for Full Power Toguro in the Mochitsuki Tournament. It's hilarious that Elder Toguro transformed into a mochitsuki's mallet. Hiei's "humpf" greeting instead of "Happy New Year" is a classic.
Yusuke's voice actor Nozomu Sasaki also recorded Yusuke wishing Happy New Year.
"Happy New Year! Let's keep a good relationship this year!"
"Let's keep a good relationship this year" (kotoshi mo ichi-nen yoroshiku) is a very typical japanese New Year Greeting.
Happy 2023, everybody! 🎊🎆🥂

Despite the fact that I've now managed to deconstruct Roberts' "Growing Up Manly: Male Samurai Childhood in Late Edo-Era Tosa" into one post about the ceremonies and rites of samurai childhood and another about the depression of Sasaki Takayuki's father, I originally pulled the article from my reference library to share the portion on same-sex relationships as an addendum to this post.
Roberts' paper adds two additional dimensions to the previous post: relationships between boys who are relatively close in age to one another, and the amount of family involvement required in such relationships.
Spacing and annotations mine.
Youths often formed intimate bonds, and individual exchanges of oaths testifying to devotion between senior and junior youths who developed romantic and sexual relationships were quite common.
These relationships often deeply involved the parents, whose permission was sought by suitors. This permission was important because it helped to ensure a serial monogamy in these relations and thereby to prevent disruptive conflicts between suitors that might lead to domain punishments.
Domain punishments are a very bad thing, not just for the individuals involved but often also for their families. They occur when young samurai are up to no good, as defined under the social and moral codes of the time, and their antics happen to draw the attention of domain officials.
One example Roberts gives is that of a young samurai and his friends appealing to his father, a government official, regarding government affairs in "an overly forceful and disrespectful manner" - both rude and outside their station, and therefore very much frowned upon.
Other reasons could involve strife caused by (failed) relationships, fighting between different groups of boys, and all manner of other bad teenage samurai behavior.
Punishments could range from public shaming for the offender to repercussions to the position of the offender's father to being expelled from the domain. Not good. Do not recommend.
The evidence of Mori Hirosada's diary suggests that such relationships were common among youths from their early to late teens.
At age 16, his adopted son, Hirotake, "became infatuated with Watanabe Yakuma's son and heir, Kichitaro." While Hirotake waited at home with seven friends, two others went to Yakuma to declare Hirotake's love. Yakuma said that although he had no objections, his son might already be involved with someone else. He would check with his son and respond later.
As it turned out, Kichitaro, who was 15, already had a lover in another youth who was unwilling to let go, so the father told Hirotake to "please stop thinking about" Kichitaro. Hirotake did so, and the matter ended peaceably.
A similar incident in another Mori household in the kin group, one that did not resolve so cleanly, reveals how extensive kin networks could be affected by youthful emotions.
In that case, 19-year-old Mori Jujiro showed up at the house of Ishikawa Sozaemon and stated his desire to have a lover's relationship with his son Ichinosuke. The father said he was favorable to the idea and "thought highly" of Jujiro but he was presently busy with domain business. He promised to check later with his son and sent Jujiro home.
As it turned out, his son was already in a relationship with a youth from the Kataoka family.
Jujiro thought that the father told him at this point that he should "wait until a way could be opened up," suggesting perhaps that the Kataoka would give up the relationship, but this only complicated the situation. Soon members of the Mori, Ishikawa, and Kataoka kin groups gathered to discuss the situation, but none gave in.
This was the kind of conflict that would attract domain attention. When punishment appeared in the offing, the kin groups invited in outside mediators who resolved things by having the Kataoka youth give up his relationship with the young Ichinosuke and Jujiro promise not to press his suit: in effect a divorce all around.
This is a soap opera and a half and I would definitely watch the Netflix adaptation.
Personal honor was bound up in these youthful love relationships. This honor might lead to fights, and a youth's honor was also tied to that of his kin group, both factors that encouraged families to become deeply involved in the management and outcomes of these relationships.
This gives you a much better idea of why Kondo Isami might have been so concerned about relationships within the Shinsengumi, especially with the potential to cause honor-driven infighting among a group of well-armed young men.
You don't want the last order of business during your commanders' meetings to be "A pulled his sword on B because they're both in love with C" unless you take something for headaches first, and anyway there are probably more pressing matters to attend to.
Intimate relationships were thus made in familial and social contexts but they were generally understood to be temporary, usually ending when the younger partner grew into adulthood.
Although such relationships often created long-term bonds of friendship even after they ended, one more incident from Hirosada's diary reveals complications that might arise when a youth exited a relationship.
In 1769 when Fukuoka Kyuhachiro "had his genpuku ceremony and became a man," he sent notice via a friend to his adult lover that he wished to end the relationship. The lover did not want to end the relationship, and it took a number of people to finally get him to agree.
However he still would not return the written oath that Kyuhachiro had given him, and this oath "had many ridiculous things in it. Allowing it to remain would be very problematic for Kyuhachiro's future." Quite possibly it contained promises to obey the lover even if the lord's government ordered otherwise - a display of ultimate devotion, but one that could prove fatal if made public during adulthood. Finally after much negotiation the lover returned the oath.
If one might trust period literature, Kyuhachiro's love troubles were, by no means, unique. Ihara Saikaku published "The Great Mirror of Male Love" in 40 chapters beginning in 1687, a collection of tales of male-male relationships, many of which end tragically.
You can get an English translation of his stories here. There's also a trilogy of manga adaptations of some of the stories, done by various artists, published by B'sLovey Comics.
Although Hirosada's diary frequently refers to the emotions of intimate friendship, infatuation, and love that male youths had for each other, it is significant that no such language is used for the relationships between youthful men and women - or for that matter between adult men and women, although records of heterosexual relationships abound in his life and diary. (...) For a man to express his close relationship with another young man made him manly, while doing so concerning women put him in danger of becoming "womanly."
This, I think, is probably the takeaway point here: these relationships were the norm and expected but could obviously cause issues not only for the individuals involved but their families.
It's not so much that Kondo Isami had a homophobia moment, it's that he had a "what will happen to discipline in the ranks" moment. Someone please get him a bottle of Tylenol.

Godzilla Minus One’s smaller-scale story elevates it above its contemporaries.
In a movie landscape filled with multiple universes, keeping a story simple with a focus on characters can lead to a better overall experience. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros studios have assembled their own cinematic universe aptly called the "Monsterverse" based on Godzilla and King Kong. At the same time, Japan's Toho Studios has started its own set of Godzilla-focused films with the 'Reiwa era.' The latest installment, Godzilla Minus One, is not only the best film of that franchise but is arguably the greatest Godzilla film ever made.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. Amazingly, the director also did outstanding visual effects in the film. Even on a smaller budget than the vast majority of action blockbusters, Godzilla looks as menacing as ever in Godzilla Minus One.
The movie is set in Japan in the aftermath of World War II in the 1940s. The story follows kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima (Rynosuke Kamiki) and his encounters with the famous monster Godzilla. After Shikishima deserts his post and lands on Odo Island, claiming his plane had mechanical issues, Godzilla attacks the Japanese war garrison on the island, killing almost everyone. Shikishima is blamed by the head mechanic, Sosaku Tachibana, for the deaths on the island, as Shikishima is overcome with fear when he has the opportunity to fire on the monster.
One of the central themes explored throughout the film is one of survivor's guilt. Shikishima is ashamed of the circumstances that led to him surviving the war and can't move past it. The shame of not dying during the war as a kamikaze pilot and freezing in a moment of terror haunts him. Shikishima is given photos by Tachibana after the incident on Odo Island, serving as ghosts that won't allow him to move on with his life.
The exploration of Skikishima's mental state is delved deeper when he meets Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe). Shikishima allows Noriko and her pseudo-adopted baby Akiko to stay with him after an off-chance meeting. They essentially form a family. However, Shikishima never fully commits to Noriko and refuses to call her his wife, even after years of living in the same household.
Godzilla Minus One is not just a great Godzilla film but also one of the best movies of 2023.
Unlike its American counterparts, Godzilla Minus One has a smaller cast, allowing for a more intimate and focused story. There aren't secret government agencies or multiple monsters. The film is just as much a story of one man's struggle to move on with his life as it is a monster film. The tale of Shikishima, Noriko, and his partners on the Shinsei Maru minesweeper boat is relatable. It doesn't feel like the middling typical Hollywood stock that takes place between the monster battles; instead, it is genuine. The audience cares about these characters and what happens to them.
Although primarily holding a dramatic tone, Godzilla Minus One has some moments of levity. Shikishama's crewmembers consist of Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), Shiru Mizushima (Yuki Yamada), and Yoji Akitsu (Kuranosuke Sasaki), all bringing a comedic element to the movie. Akitsu, specifically at times, is reminiscent of an over-the-top anime character with some of his responses and loud communication.
The most significant difference between the Reiwa era and Monsterverse Godzilla films is the emphasis on how Godzilla is treated and portrayed. In Godzilla Minus One, the dinosaur-like creature isn't romanticized or garners any sympathy. There isn't some hackneyed connection between Godzilla and humans. He is a destructive force that brings about nothing but mayhem and terror anytime he is around humans. That added creative direction brings an element of suspense that other Godzilla films have been missing.
When Godzilla attacks the city of Ginza in Tokyo, people are running for their lives, showing the true nature and level of decimation that an attack by the famous creature can bring. These aren't empty cities used as a playground for a monster battle here. All of the action scenes featuring Godzilla are utilized to perfection. In the film's final act, citizens take it upon themselves to kill Godzilla without the government's help, which refuses to intervene. The ending action is arguably the most exciting since last year's Top Gun: Maverick.
From top to bottom, Godzilla Minus One succeeds on all levels. It provides a straightforward dramatic story about one man's inner grappling with guilt and shame in the backdrop of well-executed action pieces. Godzilla Minus One is not only the best Godzilla film but also one of the best of 2023.

I saw your tags on that one post about nuclear bombs and WW2 and I have this to say
All I see is people celebrating the end of WW2 as a whole, not "Yahoo! We bombed two cities! Time to celebrate!" The point of Oppenheimer is to show the consequences of nuclear weapons and the invention he helped to create. Yes, both countries did crappy things, and dropping the bombs was a really inhumane thing to do.
I remember showing Bill Wurtz's History of Japan to my dad when it first came out. When the somber part of the bombs getting dropped, my father laughed and said: "It worked though!" And I... I just... I can't even comprehend that kind of mentality.
I'm not going to see the movie 1) Because I've seen "Fat Man, Little Boy" already and 2) I don't want to see the self-aggrandizing romanticization of the bomb, even IF it contained distinctly Japanese input which to my understanding it doesn't. Ever since I learned that Japan was already surrending before the bombs were dropped, I find it unforgivable.
I know you don't mean any ill will. But it just triggered that memory of my dad, and how practically his entire generation thinks that same way. That it needed to be done to end a war that was already over... that it was justified because we were at war... that we can scream and cry and shit our pants about 9/11 and start a decades-long crusade against middle-eastern people while the tiny island of Japan shoulders that generational trauma and STILL shows up to the world table even after the shit we put them through.
After 9/11, Sadoki Sasaki's brother Masahiro Sasaki donated one of his sister's precious paper cranes to the memorial site. He gave it to the US - the country that murdered his sister for NO reason - in an act of sympathy for our pain. What kind of world do we live in where Oppendoofus gets a movie but the Sasaki family isn't a household name in North America??

Minimalism
The adoption of a minimalist lifestyle may hold substantial potential for promoting degrowth in terms of limiting consumption and nurturing ideological frameworks that aid in improving individual growth. However, having done research into minimalism, my support has gradually changed to criticism of the minimalist lifestyle. In many respects, minimalism can be reduced to an extension of capitalism that conceals itself as counter-culture. Reading Against Accumulation: Lifestyle Minimalism, De-growth and The present Post-ecological Condition has helped me understand ecological frameworks in number of ways, firstly, it established to me that minimalism is a discipline of luxury that is more akin to personal brand and wellbeing. Secondly, minimalism continues to operate under a capitalist economic model, as the preceding quote demonstrates. The majority of minimalists still consume ethically ambiguous products via the capitalist market, albeit in a selective manner. My third and final praise for this academic piece stems from the fact that it introduced me to the concept of degrowth. I was undecided as to whether or not minimalism was the economic and diplomatic model that I required, yet degrowth presents itself as a necessary prelude both as an economic model and as a protest movement.
“Techniques proposed are versatile and involve, for example, the organized de-cluttering of private homes from accumulated material goods; the reorganization of households according to minimalist aesthetics; the selective reduction of work, communication, and social commitments to free up personal time; as well as the general ‘economization’ of individual lifestyles according to priorities of ‘what really matters in life.’” - Miriam Meissner, Against Accumulation: Lifestyle Minimalism, De-growth and The present Post-ecological Condition (2019)
“Interestingly, however, the book simultaneously advertises different forms and objects of consumption. In particular, Sasaki praises technological gadgets that allegedly facilitate a light and minimal lifestyle. For him, the objects appear to qualify as minimalist because they either replace an object of everyday use with a smaller or foldable one (e.g. a Sony head-mounted viewer instead of a TV), or because they combine the function of different objects in one. The book advertises products and devices quite specifically by providing brands and product names (e.g. the Sony MDR-1ADAC headphones, a Hobonichi Techno planner, etc.). This tendency becomes particularly obvious in the multiple passages of the book that praise Apple products, such as the following: The American company Apple has an intriguing connection to the minimalist culture of Japan. Many minimalists are fond of Apple products and of Apple’s founder, Steve Jobs. The products that Jobs created always avoided excess. The iPhone only has one button, and you don’t have to worry about being stuck with a lot of extra wires and ports when you buy a Mac … . (p. 43).” - Miriam Meissner, Against Accumulation: Lifestyle Minimalism, De-growth and The present Post-ecological Condition (2019)

Writing Update
In response to visiting the British Museum, I have written more concerning dehumanisation and how instituions may condemn such harmful practices in the present day via objects...
4 | Museums and the Ethical Considerations of Preservation and Ownership
In addition to disposing of solid waste, the West has exploited the Global South in a variety of other ways. Preservation is a distinctly human fixation; human beings are frequently preserving history, whether it be personal (photo albums, selfies, micro-blogs) or monumental (non-fiction, archiving documents of importance, documentaries), all humans, to some degree, are archivists. Objects are particularly evident in history, in fact, anthropologists often use intangibles to piece together historical narratives; as a result of cultural artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone, Egyptologists have been able to better interpret hieroglyphic text by directly translating it from the other languages scripted, such as Ancient Greek. Humans now have a firm understanding of how the Ancient Egyptians lived, all from one object (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2022). The continuous and varied observations of material culture have been investigated in museums for a great many years, however, the preservation of artefacts has its own set of ethical considerations. Museums have a lengthy history of systemic oppression and colonialism, and they ultimately indicate that ownership and sense of entitlement is still a prevalent issue in the West, from the theft of cultural artefacts to the exploitation of the human body and treating it as an exhibit. Institutions' display of such objects suggests the narratives of the victors, and whilst the cultures exploited may be seen, they are not truly heard. For example, the Benin Bronzes exhibited at the British Museum, specifically the bronze plaques, are essential to the study of Nigerian history, as they serve as historical records. Created sometime during the 16th century in Benin (present-day Nigeria) before the nation had an official written language, they are a unique insight into the lives of affluent Nigerian figures and the society of Benin. However, these exquisite artefacts have a sordid background. The bombardment of Benin began on the 9th of February, 1897, during the height of the Scramble for Africa (1884-1914). Many relics, among them the Benin Bronzes, were taken from the traditional palace and brought to the British Museum, where they reside more than a century later; the people of Nigeria may never see their own cultural relics outside of Britain, as they continue to serve as 'cultural ambassadors' at the British Museum (Jones, 2021).
Sarah Baartman Plaster Cast
Sarah Baartman (1789-1815) was a South African woman from Gamtoos River, now known as the Eastern Cape, who was forced to entertain paying audiences at venues in London, Paris, Amsterdam, and various other cities until her death on December 29th, 1815. She was branded as 'Hottentot Venus' (hottentot is outdated; the tribe to whom she belonged to are known as Khoikhoi) for her body, which was made a spectacle once again when a plaster cast of her corpse (casted by naturalist Georges Cuvier) was shown at the Musée de l'Homme, which remained as a public exhibit as recently as 2002 (Holmes, 2008). Since being returned to South Africa, the plaster cast serves as a reminder of colonialism, the exploitation of black women, and the economic injustices they experienced. The plaster cast of Sarah Baartman is detrimental as it proves unequivocally that even in the 21st century the bodies of ethnic minorities were seen as little more than exotic curiosities and fetish objects. Sarah Baartman was not the only victim of this cruel conduct; the Musée de l'Homme is partially accountable for the expansion of scientific racism in the West, calling into question whether museums can truly reform deeply institutionalised ideologies. One such instance is the dispersion of busts that were originally used to propagate phrenology; these concepts established the basis for racial hierarchy and were extensively employed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to standardise racial inequalities in European and American culture. Furthermore, this only reinforces the implication that commodities may be utilised as hegemonic tools for ignorance.
This section of the book was intended to criticise ownership as a Western fixation, and how it often culminates in harm. I critiqued museums, yet this is a concern that extends into consumerism and our greater culture; consider cultural appropriation, a contentious factor of materialism, as well as the ways in which popular culture attempts to profit off the labour and cultures of marginalised communities.
Regarding preservation, one must evaluate objects with Imperialist provenance, such as the Cecil Rhodes monument at Oxford University. Rhodes, an Imperialist who colonised Zimbabwe and Zambia (Levene, 2021), is commemorated by this monument; it exemplifies how institutions have a tendency to adhere to past figures despite their destructive presence.
The Cecil Rhodes monument has been faced with controversy ever since the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests.
However, when cultural beliefs change, is it better to erase and redact past injustices, or do we repurpose them? To acknowledge that people of colour have been exploited for their labour, culture, and resources by the Global North to the present day, we may need to face the uncomfortable tangibles of our history. Given my privilege, I do not feel it is appropriate for me to weigh in on the ethics of preserving such artefacts; I have never been the victim of institutional racism and its implications. However, I can present how objects of such destructive theories have been contextualised in order to foster social consciousness.
“As for me, I raced around the dumpsters collecting discarded "White" and "Colored" signs, thinking they would be of some interest to posterity in a Museum of Horrors.” - Stetson Kennedy
Jim Crow artefacts
The Jim Crow Museum confronts many unpleasant realities; it is laden with anti-black materials, ranging from horrific caricatures to explicit depictions of lynching. It is, essentially, a collection of rubbish (Pilgrim, 2012), discarded from a 'former' dominating culture. Dr. David Pilgrim, the founder and director of the Jim Crow Museum, started to collect Jim Crow antiques as a youth living in segregated Alabama, and is now in possession of the largest concentration of Jim Crow artefacts in the United States of America. He suggests that objects of intolerance may be employed to teach tolerance (Pilgrim, 2012).
“All racial groups have been caricatured in this country, but none have been caricatured as often or in as many ways as have black Americans. Blacks have been portrayed in popular culture as pitiable exotics, cannibalistic savages, hypersexual deviants, childlike buffoons, obedient servants, self-loathing victims, and menaces to society. These anti-black depictions were routinely manifested in or on material objects: ashtrays, drinking glasses, banks, games, fishing lures, detergent boxes, and other everyday items. These objects, with racist representations, both reflected and shaped attitudes towards African Americans.” - Dr. David Pilgrim.
Yes, many of us would rather talk about slavery than Jim Crow because a discussion of Jim Crow begs the question: "What about today?" - Dr. David Pilgrim.
In conclusion, there is value in how objects are framed; any ethical investigation must take into consideration an object's origins and intended function, who is affected by this object? What can we learn from its historical impact? What can we unlearn once faced with this object?

Designing, Designing
This week, I started the process of designing the editorial. I have compiled a range of experiments I have completed today, most of which are visuals as well as a typeface. The first experiment is typographical, playing with the title of my book, 'Noxa.' To me, this was an opportunity to portray the human condition and its many sub-topics, such as conflict and mortality. I constructed this typeface in Adobe Illustrator and then processed it in SketchClub, where I applied grain and a coloured backdrop using the hex code #1822cd. Despite the fact that I do not quite feel that the typeface is finished, the designs I produced via these experiments have confirmed my interest in this specific hue and the texture effects I incorporated. Alongside these experiments, I have begun to design with photographs I had previously taken at the British Museum. In the near future, more photos of the Benin Bronzes and Ginger the mummy will be used.
Typography

Despite the need for improvements, this is quite an improvment in comparison to my initial design (which I had planned to put on the front cover). I believe that my most recent is more innovative.

Made in a Free World
In order to raise awareness about the role that slave labour plays in free-market supply chains from raw materials to products, Slavery Footprint has designed an interactive online site titled Made in a Free World. The website illustrates how personal and societal complicity contribute to global slavery, specifically in the context of the exploitation of the Global South. This website served as a major source of inspiration to me, both in terms of the design and the content. Despite the fact that I intend to write and design an editorial, I was nevertheless moved by how they utilise UX/UI design; it draws you into a false sense of comfort, with colourful graphics and pleasant interactive designs, almost as if to to make you oblivious to the fact that you are reviewing your consumption, and by the end of the survey, you are met with a number of enslaved people that work for you, 18 slaves work for me according to their system. I feel motivated by the potential of critical design, as well as how design can serve such an essential role in raising social consciousness. This information has been valuable to me for considering the harm that objects pose as 'acceptable' forms of slavery, and how I can translate this to my audience.

Tuesday Tutorial
Today I attended our Tuesday tutorial session. I spoke about my intent to research the degrowth movement, and I felt from the reactions I recieved that I had identified an appropriate model. This could be for the fact that degrowth is more solution-based and has the potential to impact the growth of our economy, therefore impacting our accumilation as a society. Overall, I benfitted from outlining my development and weekly objectives, such as finalising the writing for my editorial and providing first instances of my design, as I recieved helpful feedback in return. A particularly memoriable critique was in regards to a typographical test I had been working on; a member of my tutorial group mentioned that he was initially confused by the 'X' in the title of my book, 'Noxa,' believing it to be the letter 'V'. I have in response made modifications to the design, including adjusting the height and width of each letter, which initially I had not done. As a dyslexic who often struggles with typography, I am quite appreciative of the thoughtful input I received. I am looking forward to next week's session.

Meet the Berry's - the only sim family I didn't give up on after a few hours.
This is a rotational savefile where the main household is based on the Not So Berry Challenge and the All Packs Extended Not-So-Berry Challenge.
Each rotation consists of 1 full sim-year (28 days).
You can read about one family or one generation at a time.
I’ve created a summary of every generation. Refresh your memory or jump in wherever.
My gameplay defaults include having aging off for everyone except the active household and neighborhood stories off.
