When I was in Malta last year, I bought two short books in Maltese as language practice. So now that I have some (extremely!) basic understanding of Maltese grammar, I thought I would start using one of them to learn new vocabulary and constructions. Hopefully they can also be helpful to someone else. If you notice any mistakes or have any comments about anything, please don’t hesitate to tell me :)

I list nouns like ‘singular, plural (gender)’, verbs like ‘stem, singular imperative’, and adjectives like ‘masculine, feminine, plural’.

*1 fi is shortened to f’ before a vowel or a single consonant, ta’ is shortened to t’ before vowels and silent letters such as in t’għajn. *2 identical in all genders and numbers, as far as I can tell *3 though I think it means ‘most’ in this case, as it has the definite article *4 as far as I can tell, the present tense form in the text (jilqa’) cannot be regularly derived from the imperative (aiqa’) *5 apparently very rare, I couldn’t find its plural form anywhere *6 not conjugated like a normal verb; jisimni means ‘I am called’. It is listed as a pronoun in my dictionary, which seems weird but I assume it has something to do with it’s abnormal conjugation pattern *7 the form ġejt seen in the text means “I came” or “I have come”. It seems this verb is also similar to laqa’ (*4), in that the present tense cannot be regularly derived from the imperative. ‘I come’ in Maltese is niġi, not *nejja, as I would have expected. *8 għajnejn is the dual form, I have not found any plural form *9 wkoll is used if the previous word ends in a vowel, in other cases it is written as ukoll. *10 I have no idea why the text says tibda and not tibdi. According to my limited understanding, and my dictionary, it should be tibdi. *11 logically I would have expected an indirect object suffix here, but it seems languages don’t always make perfect sense. *12 the present tense (jiekol) cannot be regularly derived from the imperative as far as I can tell.

Some grammar notes under the cut

Disclaimer: lots of this is simplified, sometimes because I don’t want to make it too complicated, but probably most of the time because I just don’t have a clue myself. Please tell me if you find anything that isn’t true, and I will correct it.

Nouns, Adjectives and Prepositions

As you may have noticed, adjectives follow their head nouns: dar eleganti - an elegant house. There is no indefinite article.

The definite article is il- in it’s most basic form, but is shortened to l- if the following or preceding letter is a vowel. If the letter following the article is one of the so called “sun consonants”, the l changes to that consonant: iċ-ċwievet. If the word attached to the article begins with certain consonant combinations, the article is l- and an i is inserted after the dash, as in the headline l-imħatra.

Many prepositions join with a following article, e.g. minn + l-aktar -> mill-aktar, ta’ + id-dar -> tad-dar.

Note also that both the noun and its attributive adjectives get the definite article, and that the article is mandatory with possessive pronouns (unlike in English where you would never think of saying “his the new the butler”): il-maġġordom il-ġdid tiegħu. (N.B. adjectives which are not of Semitic origin do not take the article. If we put raġel sinjur in the definite, it thus becomes ir-raġel sinjur, not *ir-raġel is-sinjur.)

Verbs

There is no infinitive in Maltese; the verbal stem is the masculine third person past tense, e.g. qal means ‘he said’. For formation of other tenses, see @malteseboy‘s posts on the past tense and present tense.

Qiegħed / Qed and Kien

This section is almost entirely based on an explanation by @malteseboy - again, thanks a lot for all your help ❤️

So one of the first things I learned about Maltese is that there is no word for ‘to be’. Well, turns out there’s a bit more to it than that. The verb meaning ‘to be’, or ‘to exist’ is kien, but it’s not used in the present tense when you just want to say something like “I am X” (instead you just say ‘I X’, jien X). However, it is used in the past (’I was X’ -> (jien) kont X), and in some very limited uses in the present which I won’t go into.

Qiegħed (the common shortened form being qed) marks the continuous tense in Maltese. You just add it before a present tense verb to form the present continuous tense:

nagħmel - I do  =>  qed nagħmel - I am doing

You can easily put this sentence in the past by adding kien in front of it:

kont qed nagħmel - I was doing

If you add kien in front of a verb without qed, it carries the meaning of ‘used to’ if the verb is in the present tense, and indicates pluperfect if the verb is in the past tense:

nagħmel - I do  =>  kont nagħmel - I used to do

għamilt - I did  =>  kont għamilt - I had done

N.B. the long form qiegħed has a feminine (qiegħda) and plural (qiegħdin) version. Qed can be used for any gender and number.

Day 1 of 34HLC:

So this is my starting point:

I studied French for an hour on Duolingo and 16 minutes on Busuu today. I also made myself new flashards on ANKI.

In an hour, I mastered Travel 2 and At Home. Now they are both golden!!! I actually have an online lesson right now, so I got to go. But tonight I’m planning on sharing vocabulary lists!
