Chuuya leaves after the flags dies, taking the hand that Murase has offered him and Dazai is left behind to watch as he becomes one with the light, shining brighter than any sun that he has ever caught sight of- till he no longer has to anymore.

The first time Chuuya leaves, he does it alone- the second time, however, he finds himself dragging Dazai along.

so to summarize:

Some changes made to Lloyd's arc in Crystalized because it was handled very messy.

He doesn't actually believe in Harumi's innate goodness, but he is desperate to convince her to leave the Overlord's side because those two are sources of trauma that teamed up and made a nightmare combo. SO it's a better idea to have her on his side than with the Overlord

his (and the rest of the ninja's) weird pro cop vibes are going down down the drain.

one thing that i think is worth emphasizing more though is his growing anger issues (because they are noticeably there). i think after the events of crystallized he'll have more time to process all that trauma and anger. which isn't to say it won't be locked in or explosive at times

Basically the dust has settled, the major enemies are gone for now. and now the biggest threat Lloyd's gotta face now is his disasterful mental health

which has been causing him to lose control of his powers and go oni mode a lot more since unlocking it.

Meanwhile. Harumi's in jail.

But she's been becoming sicker and weaker as the days go by and eventually she gets moved to the hospital because it turns out. she's dying

turns out that now that since the Overlord is the reason she's alive, and it's gone now, Harumi can't keep staying in the earthly realm and she's starting to fade out of existence.

panicking and realizing that she hasn't really lived properly makes a bucket list of things she's always wanted to do, and then. calls the one person she wanted to make peace with the most as a spotter

Lloyd is really reluctant to meet with Harumi after everything she put him through but hearing that she doesn't have much time left he follows the part of him that really genuinely cares about her and was heartbroken over her.

So Lloyd agrees to help Harumi complete her bucket list.

Things don't go that smoothly though. Harumi is still Harumi. she will become vicious and cruel on a dime, despite trying to resolve that aspect of herself.

And Lloyd, even with as much empathy he has, doesn't alway want to play nice with the person who actively destroyed his life. So.

they're not really in a relationship, they're not dating. it's barely romantic, but there's a layer of genuine care.

also kissing. blooodyyyy kissing.

they break up in the end. and become pseudo-friends

a few more things:

Lloyd and Nya have been covering more hero work ever since the main4 lost their powers. Lloyd's been tackling more underground crime in New Ninjago City. something Harumi is pretty familiar with. so they play vigilante together a little bit.

I headcanon Lloyd on the aroace-spectrum so. the entire experience after breaking up with Harumi kind of solidifies that to him

ANOTHER misc double black observations post!

-> Chuuya : Mori as Atsushi : Dazai

-> Dazai : Mori as Akutagawa : Dazai

Chuuya and Atsushi represent the "easier" dependable proteges, while Akutagawa and Dazai are the guilt-inducing proteges to their mentors.

double black dynamics are always influenced by their mentors but end up stronger when the mentor is taken out of the equation, (shin soukoku being literally unstoppable once Atsushi's like "STFU ABOUT DAZAI BITCH"; skk and their "unbreakable bond" or whatever)

You could say that Dazai belongs in the "Light Half" of the dynamic while Chuuya's the "Dark half" bc D's a good guy and C's a villain or smth but knowing what we do about their respective backstories and characterization, you can easlily make a case for the reverse

^^ making Dazai and Chuuya more of a meeting in the middle sort of situation more than old skk and new skk's diametric opposition

Mori -> Dazai: Mori passed down, his coat, his manipulation, and deceitfulness. The congenial and occasionally attitude to mask their true genius. Dazai -> Akutagawa: Dazai passes that same coat, aloofness, his, uh, violent tendencies?

it's worth remembering that as far as we know, Mori never physically abused Dazai. Manipulated him into really BAD situations? yeah probably, but Mori would never willingly try to hurt Dazai. (he adores that kid, but that's a post for later) Wherever Dazai learned that treating Akutagawa that way was a good idea, it was NOT from Mori.

We get multiple instances of Mori and Dazai's relationship being somewhat positive and helpful scattered around 15 and stormbringer, where we don't see much of Dazai and Aku having anything close to a healthy relationship until AFTER D joined the ADA.

Chuuya -> Akutagawa: well we don't see much but Chuuya seems to be a pretty supportive figure to him

it's implied that Chuuya was either oblivious to or uncomfortable of Akutagawa's training under Dazai. In the drama CD and DA he makes a point to tell Aku to stop worrying over Dazai.

Chuuya -> Atsushi: nothing yet. LET THEM MEET OMFG ASAGIRI--

Dazai -> Atsushi: I think Akutagawa and the ADA and specifically Kunikida and Kyouka had a bigger role to play in Atsushi's character development than Dazai did, But Dazai's heroic role in his life did sort of solidify a Dazai-complex in him too. Buddy's hallucinating this man giving him motivational quotes like. EVERYWHERE

So in conclusion Atsushi 🤝 Akutagawa: Dazai complex

Why do Akutagawa and Atsushi fit Yin and Yang so well?

may or may not be inspired by some sskk rant I saw on tumblr a few months ago (I'll reference if I remember the creator) and a Pinterest post w this template:

Has anyone else ever notice how yin-yang Akutagawa and Atsushi are? Yeah they are both orphans that were taken in by Dazai and "abused by their handler" ('handler' is wild ngl) but in the main series Atsushi is more Yang and Akutagwa is more Yin, character wise, and even design wise. Yet, in Beast (a spin-off where Akutagawa ends up in the ADA and Atsushi ends up in the PM) the roles are reversed and Aku is more Yang and Atsu is more Yin, further emphasizing that this difference between the two isn't accidental (not claiming simply speculating).

Akutagawa is relatively bad but he has shown how he could be good, in the main series, Wan, and beast. he's undeniably a good brother (just look at how much he cares for his sister in beast, he even joined the ADA and made it his purpose to find her after he learned that she was in the mafia.) He keeps promises, hates meaningless torture-- which believe it or not shows a bit about his character-- (haha he does have emotions even if it may be stemmed from a deep psychological trauma). He also has a mainly dark but light accent wardrobe, from the ends of his hair to the very same accessory that he can't even name. help I ran out of good character traits I think I'm failing

Atsushi is relatively good, and even seems to be blind to it at times, but he has shown his not the best traits. He's kinda like Gon, but less merciless, even when it comes to fights with Akutagawa (sometimes). His good:bad ratio is pretty skewed though, no matter how much he may envy or hate his kindness kinda just... drowns it out. Evil headmaster dies? cry. Evil goth boyfriend partner dies? scream. Evil American enemy still lives? team up with him. Evil 14 year old serial assassin in the port mafia exist? save her.

Although, he's pretty rash/blunt (that Dazai diss was wild aku didn't do anything to deserve that) and its also shown in wan and other scenes in the main series that he would probably participate in a 2017-19 roast battle(hj) and holds some strong grudges. (help I ran out of bad character traits he's too good, its like he's so good and he doesn't even try.) Butttt apperence wise, his singular black hair streak in a head of light whatever-colored-hair (in contrast to Akutagawa's) and accents of black (suspenders, tail-belt-thing that moves as if he was Cat Noir, tie, gloves, pants, shoes) do what Akutagwa's 19th century ruffles do best. Be utterly useless and ugly and feed into the theory that he is a time traveler Contrast.

Now for beast. I'll make this one shorter:

Akutagawa takes Atsushi's role. in this he represents 'in light there is darkness' perfectly. he's on the 'good side' and has the noble goal of finding his sister and his color pallate is lighter but he is still pretty quick to judge and isn't open or super kind.

Atsushi is considered ruthless (because of how violently and mercelesly quick and cold he kills but its really the tiger) but he himself admits that he is scared, scared of it all, especially death (or something like that) so to over come his fear of death, he must become it. That's it. He became the 'god of death' because of his fear of it. His color pallate is much darker and the lightest parts of it is the tiger fur on his coat and his natural features like hair and eyes. He's on the side of 'bad' but he even betrayed dazai for kyouka because he cares about her too much and that part of him he cant change. he will always want to protect all the orphan kids that were suffering like he was because he cant bare to see it, so yeah, in darkness there is light.

Basically, Shin Soukoku canon because opposites attract.

HAHA this has to be honestly one of the most endearing asks i've ever had in my inbox. fair warning, i will literally be talking a lot for this one because i am first and foremost a nerd before all else. all links bring you to the books' respective goodreads page :)

remember to read through the content / trigger warnings of each book before you read them! reading should never come at the expense of your own mental well-being. be wise.

my number one current favourite novel is these violent delights by chloe gong. it's actually the first book in a duology, but i've been procrastinating on the second novel lol. the premise is a romeo & juliette retelling set in 1920s shanghai with a mafia setting and childhood lovers turned bitter enemies. it's one of my favourite tropes ever, and these violent delights executed it beautifully. honestly unsurrpised that it was as much of a hit as it was because god. it deserves it.

i also really, really, really love the seven husbands of evelyn hugo with my whole heart. the premise of it is positively stunning and i'm a sucker for tragic gay people. i lowkey jumped into it half-blind sided by the cool edits i found on instagram only to get smacked in the face with a lot more depth than meets the eye. the line about non-sexual intimacy in this book both smothered me to death and brought me back to life. i read this book in one day and walked out of it gasping for air.

i am also into the invisible life of addie larue due to the poignant way the author depicts a life without being remembered... even if the ending brutally demolished me. it was the epitome of 'immortality is a curse,' for me and it was just. fuck, man. it's fucking brilliant from the beginning to the end, and it's just a novel that i hold very close to my heart.

now, i know you said books, but i will be incomplete if not for the fanfiction i read. therefore, i will list all-time favourite fanfiction (that i remember right now). all of them are linked to archive of our own <3

being neck-deep in satosugu hell right now, i will have to start with them. i'd like to begin with my two favourite satosugu fanfictions which are caesura by cielelyse, otherwise known as the only canon 15 satosugu in my mind ever. the dynamic is fucking insane, and i cried a lot when i read it. there is also, of course, and carry my home by valleykey which i have reread despite the fact that it's 50k words and killed me brutally the first time. it follows 17!satosugu who gets time traveled towards the present time / pre-shibuya. it goes about as well as you would expect it to be.

other fics that also brutally murdered me and made me physically cry was punishment for a monster by mimiquack (suguru loses his memories post-shibuya and lives a non-sorcerer life; satoru copes...or something), i'd like the sun to set with you by chuuyasoup (satoru goes with suguru that day in shinjuku), smile like brass by chuuyasoup (role reversal au that starts with suguru being too late on that day), and laundry and taxes by hamsterqinghua (everything, everywhere, all at once au, you can guess where it goes from here). these are all angst fics that ripped a hand through my ribs and crushed my heart in their palms. there's more, but. well.

my favourite satosugu smut fics (because i am, after all, a smut author) is the midnight rendezvous series by damiselart. also, let's climb the cliff and jump again by ruche which hm, i suppose technically counts as an age gap fic because it's 28!satoru getting his shit rocked by 17!suguru (time travel finicky stuff; you know how it goes). and then, there are also these two other fics, lovesick lullabye and i'm done carrying the weight of this world (i just wanna feel this love) which are both by pastelcoloureddreams.

now, onto my next idiotic duo, i would like to present soukoku (dazai osamu / nakahara chuuya from bsd) and my favourite fics for them. starting off strong as a combination one of my favourite ships and one of my favourite books, i'd like to present empire of dirt by arkastadt which is a the seven husbands of evelyn hugo inspired soukoku fanfic with similar premise, but a massively different setting & plot. one of the best known soukoku fics for a reason. there is also, of course, i step from here without you by chuuyasoup that follows soukoku throughout the multiverse and murdered me in cold blood by the time it was done. genuinely one of the best fics i have ever read ever.

onto smut soukoku fics, everyone welcome bottom of the deep blue sea by arkastadt which is the only soukoku smut fic ever. you cannot ask me to give you a smut recommendation better than this. the premise is gorgeous, featuring an arrogant and self-assured dazai who challenges chuuya to make him cry and chuuya does. it's so fucking good.

there's definitely more that i've cut back from this list due to laziness, but feel free to ask for more if you're still interested! i was also neckdeep in hell in genshin & voltron & boku no hero academia for a while, so i should have fic recs for them, too, but i'm too lazy to hunt them down right now. if you want me to, just shoot me another ask and i'll drop the recs in the future <3

ok so these are in. no particular order. but it is rly funny to me bc typically the fics that i love that i've written are the least popular of all of them! which isn't a bad thing, but it's an odd phenomena. anyway.

taste of fear; - 17,286 words, complete, role reversal tanizaki au, Bad Things Happen and homie has to join the port mafia for a little while. kind of tachizaki. kind of not. they spend a lot of time at each other's throats.

i rly love this one because i just really love tanizaki and tachihara, man. i've said it before and i'll say it again. tachihara is my favorite. and i love the idea that tanizaki - sweet, unsuspecting, anxiety-ridden but clearly unstable - is able to see past his guise as a mafioso because tanizaki knows fakes and there is nothing about tachihara's words that are genuine. plus, i really really love the hair-dyeing scene with gin and tanizaki's talk with mori.

apple of my eye; - 21,031 words, complete, jouno backstory + suegiku

i think i'd be lying if i said this didn't feel like my magnum opus ngl. i really love this fic. i think it balances out jouno's sadistic tendencies + his fascination with tecchou + his moral compass rly well and it in general feels like smth someone way more talented than me wrote bc. i just. i love it !! definitely Earned its content warnings tho.

drink me down, save me later; - 5,736, complete, kousano + angst w a happy ending

fics that i think shld get more love and i get its wlw and also angst with a happy ending and so it does not get Any attention comparatively but i rly liked this one !! it was my first time writing both kouyou + yosano not just as a ship but as characters, and i think i got them down well ! kousano,,, i love them. i think they could do soukoku better than soukoku but they never get the time of day.

homebound (my peace of mind is my piece of you); - 5,608 words, complete, tachigin, hurt/comfort

tachigin... holds SO gently. i don't write as much tachigin as i shld, but i wrote this one based off of fanart w permission from the artist and. ough. i rly love the way this turned out. i dont rly remember the specifics but i remember being very proud of it and i Know it holds up and it deserves more love.

beyond saints; - unpublished & unfinished, but it's sitting at like 3k. fyolai + fyodor backstory.

i consider this fic my fyodor backstory fic and much like my jouno backstory fic, it has earned its content warnings! i constantly have to step away from it 'cos it's Heavy yknow but i am still really proud of it and i can't wait until i finally manage to finish it because then i'll have written anything with fyodor (and i don't really understand him, which is why i started this one) and i think it'll end up like 20k or so, if i do it right.

More about that Mori-Fukuzawa role-reversal.

I imagine that the two got along decently for a while, aside from the typical "I can't stand you instinctively" soukoku disease. Mostly because there wasn't such a huge moral contrast between them. So when Fukuzawa becomes the PM Boss, they're still sort of working together. Mori's clinic is still a neutral zone, but PM absolutely buys the most information from him, and given it's Fukuzawa, who's trying to make Yokohama better, Mori has relatively little reservations about it. And he pays nicely, he won't complain about it, either. So overall, it's a win-win situation for them both.

Ofc, they still have a huge fall out later, though.

aSDHGHHFDS actually so true. i think i would probably bite you first. im definitely the fungus by the way you describe me in your letters and i think to be edgy and different i get to die first. something hot like a stab wound. and you get to guren over it. we did the jesus judas thing in the bsd server thats well established<3

but also hi thank god someone asked me for melkor and feanor when i read it i thought of them immediately. shin soukoku is also very good for this. they both share the "they dont kiss because they hate each other" and also. cocaine

obviously for melkor and fëanor some of these dont apply such as again the dying one I really do not think that could be much altered its the whole. fate thing. Melkor wants to consume that man so so so so so so so bad its a PROBLEM. and he doesnt GET to because he knowwws it would be like his bigass dog that ate the silmaril and instead it is fëanor's mere memory in these jewels that continue to eat away at him until he is nothing. you know. melkor is the ant also! as can be gleaned from what i just said. "who is the dog and who is the master" question so funny because melkor is 100 percent the dog who are we even kidding ourselves here ive written like 15 pages of this fic and that particular metaphor has already been made at least six times put that beast on a leash. cigarette ash is also melkor. he's a freak

as to shin soukoku theyre hard. we've already literally seen the role reversal au of them and that's really fascinating because neither of them technically really die in either version . it would always be in front of each other i think not always be each other's hands but sometimes definitely. and theyre also both dogs theyre in a dog dog relationship and they both bite a Lot. jesus definitely wanted it here im not gonna lie to you. i dont think its possible for either of them to smoke considering akutagawa would drop dead and atsushi would get Scared. the betrayed is definitely proud atsushi is bad at it but i think he is.

If chapter 88 was about Akutagawa and Higuchi, if Akutagawa had sacrificed his life to protect her, and given her that smile as he said "You fool, hurry up and go." It would have been UNDOUBTEDLY been eaten up as romantic, and cishet fans would have taken it as "Akutagawa has feelings for Higuchi!!!!!!"

Because what he did for Atsushi was completely and undoubtedly out of love. He sees Atsushi as more precious than life itself. This scene being directly juxtaposed with Higuchi trying to confess and he literally kills her is insane. Like, narratively (and literally) speaking, he gave his life for Atsushi and then killed Higuchi in the same chapter.

If Atsushi and Higuchi's roles were reversed, cishet fans would be praising Akutagawa's death as devastatingly romantic, while mocking shin soukoku for Akutagawa killing Atsushi with no hesitation after Atsushi tried confessing.

And you're right. You're SO right - Until right now, I didn't even REALISE the importance of the fact he literally tries to kill Higuchi when she tries to confess to him after he DIES for Atsushi. Replace Atsushi for Higuchi and everyone would've been acting like it's the most romantic shit - and that's because it IS.

Shin Soukoku's bond is one of my favourite in the entire series and when I read 'You fool, hurry up and go' I cried. No matter which way you slice it, replace Atsushi for Higuchi and people would call it love.

Because it is.

(so credits and much kudos to them! link to the post) should i cross-post this on ao3...?

dazai’s eyes fluttered open as he finally regained consciousness, his expression seeming bleak but at the same time devoid of any emotion. it was his usual expression. the one he gave to everyone who passed him on the street or watched him while he waited for his coffee he ordered in that small café nearby. just an ordinary expression. nothing special that would ever captivate anyone if it weren’t for the charm he held.

dazai had yet to figure out where he was, and as if to make it even more difficult to pinpoint his current location, his vision is rather blurry, and one of his eyes is obscured by a somewhat rough material that he presumes to be his bandages. although his bandages didn’t bother him too much. he’s used to them by now after all. what bothered him more was the fact that all his memories were somehow a big mess.

yet, he clearly remembered jumping off the port mafia building, in fact, he remembered everything that involved that jump. from atsushi’s strident voice ringing in his ears, to the thrilling sensation of the adrenaline surging through his veins, to his insides feeling like they’re climbing up his torso. a wisp of a smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he dwelled in the memories and stared ahead, seeing nothing yet but a strong beam of light.

the bright light seemed heavenly to him, but it also had something unusual about it. it hurt him, making his eyes water. dazai’s mind began to wander, his once visible smile now tinged with a faint despondency. disappointment settled in, casting a melancholic shadow over his thoughts as he expected a more serene scene after his death. then again, no one ever said heaven was a fun or prepossessing experience, did they? heaven... what a stupid thing to believe in. and how stupid of him to actually think that the blackest of blood, port mafia blood, could ever belong to a place like that. perhaps that was why, as if he were standing too close to a flame, the light burned his eyes, completely absorbing the darkness in them. after all, everyone knew that he was and will never go to heaven, but to hell. his own personal hell. the universe he created.

dazai blinked, able to make out some of the things in his room now, like a white ceiling and a large window, the sun facing him as it slowly disappeared behind the horizon. a sense of dread settled over him as he realized that it wasn’t the sunlight alone that sent a rush of agony through his body, or the thought of being in hell, but rather the fact that he was indeed still alive. his body ached and the comforting warmth he once felt from the hospital bed swiftly gave way to an icy chill that pierced through his very soul—much more fitting to an individual like him.

dazai raised his trembling hand as he meticulously counted each of his fingers, desperately wanting to confirm that he wasn’t alive and that this was just an overly realistic dream. he had once heard that dreams were full of anomalies such as having an extra finger, so the possibility that his head was just playing a trick on him was an option that had to be considered; that gave him hope. however, the pain coursing through his body and the pungent smell of alcohol mixed with the undertones of artificial fragrance were enough of a hint for dazai to know that his suicide attempt had failed again – as usual.

he clenched his teeth and closed his eyes, wondering how he managed to keep surviving. he thought this would be the one. the one and only universe where he could die in peace, knowing that he is still alive. but it seemed that this universe was just as cruel to him, forcing him to live with the burden of knowing that the only person he ever considered a friend despised him.

the faint sound of footsteps approaching his hospital bed could be heard, pulling dazai out of his thoughts. he couldn’t determine to whom they belonged. something about the footsteps felt amiss. they didn’t belong to atsushi, as dazai initially suspected, given his desperate plea not to take that fateful leap. nor were they the menacing strides of akutagawa, who probably harbored a somewhat deep desire for revenge after the torment inflicted upon his sister.

he sat up, slowly, as his neck brace would not allow him to move properly. his eyes widened slightly as he distinguished the head of a familiar person peeking out from behind a bouquet of flowers – red roses to be exact. the rich, smoky yet soothing scent that trailed behind the small figure, drowning out the antiseptic one, made dazai feel slightly light-headed. “chuuya…” dazai whispered absent-mindedly, his voice barely audible. “i see you’ve finally woken up.” a tender smile adorned chuuya’s lips as he carefully set the roses aside only to stare at them for a moment.

dazai’s throat tightened as he took in chuuya’s appearance, noticing the black coat he supposedly inherited after his ‘death’. “chuuya... why- how am I still alive?” dazai inquired, his voice sounding a bit hoarse. he seemed puzzled. the ginger eventually lifted his head up, gazing at him with a hint of affection in his eyes. “what do you mean? you’re alive because i saved you, silly.” dazai’s eyes sank slightly and he looked away for a split second, feeling conflicted. was it so sinful to wish to die? was there really no universe where he was allowed to die? chuuya, on the other hand, seemed amused, his smile never faltering. “what, did you really think i wouldn’t find out that you were trying to kill yourself all along? did you really think you could fool me? your partner?” he drew out the last syllable, emphasizing it as a dark shadow fell across his face, rendering him somewhat colder.

dazai’s lips parted slightly as he felt oddly compelled to answer him, yet the words seemed to die on his tongue and he remained silent instead. eventually, he lowered his head and stared at his trembling hands, as if he could find a pleasing answer in them. chuuya’s smile seemed to waver a little upon dazai’s reaction.

at some point, he took a step closer and clasped his hands behind his back. “i also cleaned up the mess you left behind. you know... i killed them. all of them. i killed again and again and again and again…” he said with a faint tremor in his voice, tightening the grip on his hands. dazai’s body tensed and his eyes widened in disbelief. he knew quite well to what extent chuuya’s abilities reached, what he was capable of and what not. yet, an inexplicable sense of unease slithered up dazai’s spine, causing a slight shudder within him. “i killed your friend, too.” chuuya added in a mellow tone, gawking at his expression. “w-what?” dazai’s eyebrows furrowed and he looked at chuuya as if he didn’t understand a single of the words he uttered. though chuuya only tilted his head, a grin still plastered across his lips as he observed dazai.

dazai’s heartbeat gradually picked up its pace as he repeated the words in his head, refusing to believe them. his head was spinning and his mind was flooded with memories of oda and him together. they were beautiful moments, each of them unique in its own way. he recalled oda eating curry, his favorite food, or playing with sakura, one of the orphans he took care of. he remembered their first meeting, how he treated his wounds after yet another failed suicide attempt. though at that time, he was glad he didn’t die. after all, oda had become one of his closest friends; his only friend. but those memories felt misplaced in this universe, just like dazai himself.

eventually, he found his composure and exhaled shakily as he felt the mattress sink in. chuuya was now sitting beside him, his smile seeming more sinister than anything else at the moment. “you’re lying. i made sure that all connections to us were cut, so he has absolutely nothing to do with me. we’re not even friends!” chuuya’s eye twitched slightly as he listened to dazai’s words, knowing that he was blatantly lying to him. “oh, really?” his expression shifted a little as he gently took dazai’s hand before squeezing it, slowly applying more pressure. it didn’t take long before dazai winced in pain and slapped his hand away. however, chuuya hardly felt anything considering that dazai had little to no strength at the moment. then again, dazai knew that chuuya wouldn’t hurt him seriously. after all, he had picked up on the signs quite quickly.

“don’t touch me.” dazai raised his voice, glaring at the redhead who was drawing closer to his face. a hint of disgust swept over him as he could practically feel chuuya’s breath fanning across his cold skin. eventually, dazai twisted his head away and sank deeper into the pillow, trying to escape chuuya’s intense gaze. chuuya had other plans, however, as he cautiously brought one of his hands closer to dazai’s face, gently caressing his cheek before tilting his head back. dazai’s body stiffened at the ghostly touch and he stared into chuuya’s eyes, which seem to convey an unusual degree of fondness. something he has rarely expressed for anything ever since their first encounter.

at some point, dazai turned his face away again and tried to slap him across the face. but chuuya grabbed his hand at the right moment and instead intertwined his fingers with dazai’s, pushing him further into the mattress as he leaned over him, his hands on either side of his head as he pinned him down. dazai’s teeth grinded together, his throat constricting with a heavy gulp as the gravity of the situation became painfully clear. somehow the weight of his actions, leaving his partner - betraying him even - like everyone else did in the past, beared down on him. it seemed as if none of the two of them would ever be granted a happy ending. not even when they are together.

“why did you do it?” dazai snapped, causing chuuya to blink a few times, catching him off guard for the briefest of moments. “ah, i’m glad you asked. i’ll tell you. to put it simply... i was jealous. jealous that you would care about someone who hates you so much. who can’t even look at you properly without being repulsed. it’s a shame, truly. i just wish you would look at me the same way you look at him... but now that he and all the others are gone, i won’t have to worry about that.” a crooked smile graced chuuya’s lips as he averted his eyes in embarrassment and pulled away, a faint blush ormenanting his usually pale cheeks.

dazai lowered his head, clenching his jaw as his fingernails dug into his skin, drawing some blood. he had never been good at tempering his emotions whenever oda is mentioned. “did you really kill odasaku just for that?” dazai murmured, his voice sounding colder than usual. “oh, that’s such a nice nickname. do i have one too?” chuuya dodged the question, unimpressed by dazai’s frustration. he expected it. tears welled up in dazai’s eyes as he scraped the bandages from his face, breathing heavily. “you’re lying! you’re just messing with me! he’s still alive! he has to be!.. you... i will kill you, chuuya! you had no right to take him from me! to take him from the only universe where he is alive–” chuuya listened carefully to dazai’s words, his expression oddly hard to read as he conveyed no emotion whatsoever. a barely audible sigh escaped his lips before dazai’s fit of rage was momentarily silenced as chuuya grabbed his chin and kissed him. dazai’s eyes widened in shock and he seemed stunned for once in his life.

chuuya’s lips were awfully soft, sending dazai into a delirious frenzy as he was distracted by the sweet taste. the corners of chuuya’s mouth curved into a faint smirk, and he seemed pleased with dazai’s reaction as he closed his eyes. eventually, he tightened his grip on dazai’s chin to hold him in place and deepened the kiss. dazai’s shock lingered, yet he couldn’t ignore the suffocating warmth welling up in his chest or the quickening of his heartbeat. still, he could never forgive chuuya for what he’s done, which is why he tried so hard to break away from the sudden kiss. in the end, he managed to wriggle his hands free and tried futility to push him away, accidentally knocking over his iv bag and ripping out the tubes that were connected to his veins. with a sharp and unpleasant sting, the needle forcefully exited his skin and he writhed in pain, his lips parting ever so slightly. the expected scream, however, is abruptly stifled as chuuya’s tongue sensually slided into dazai’s mouth, eliciting a low moan from him. chuuya’s grin widened at the sound of dazai’s voice, while dazai’s cheeks seemed to flare.

with his mind barely functioning, he clinged to chuuya, his eyes slowly falling shut. a single tear traced its path down his cheek as a profound sense of self-disgust washed over him. though he found solace in chuuya’s touch, oda’s face haunted every corner of dazai’s thoughts, leaving him no room to fully enjoy the sensation chuuya was giving him. not that he would allow himself to actually crave another human being’s warmth anyway. dazai was far too stubborn for that. no matter how much he longed for someone to finally fill the heart-shaped void in his chest, he knew that no one would be naive enough to actually try and navigate through the darkness that engulfed him, especially now that the only person who had ever been capable of soothing some of his agony was dead. and chuuya certainly wouldn't replace the last bit of him left in his heart.

chuuya didn’t seem to be thinking straight anymore as he put more force into the kiss and grew more and more desperate. to him, this was all he ever wanted. in a moment of weakness, he bit dazai’s lower lip, breaking the delicate skin. it darkened rather quickly, leaving behind a visible bruise and a smear of crimson at the corner of dazai’s mouth. chuuya pulled back after needing to catch his own breath for a moment. he held up dazai’s chin, seemingly engrossed in the way his tears mingled with the small amount of blood, while dazai barely reacted to the stinging sensation the salty wetness caused. “oh, how beautiful. you really are the best…” chuuya cooed, his voice dripping with affection as he admired how gorgeous dazai looked. his dazai. a wide smile adorned chuuya’s lips as his pupils dilated at the pure sight of him.

dazai on the other hand was left speechless. he didn’t know what to say, nor what to feel or what to look at. he was completely overwhelmed and all he wanted to do was scream. scream at the world for being so full of injustice, scream at himself for being so useless, scream until his burning throat dulled all the other painful sensations, and scream until he had no oxygen left in his lungs. his eyes darted across chuuya’s face, unable to settle on a single place as he tried to drown out his terribly tranquillizing voice. everything felt so wrong, so surreal. his heart was throbbing with an indescribable amount of pain, and he felt like he'd grow manic if he had to look at chuuya any second longer. while he was once dazai’s sole reason not to end his miserable life, he is now the only reason why he doesn’t want to wake up ever again.
