ST. LOUIS SHUT DOWN A BOEING FACTORY TODAY! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
instagram
at 7 am—
HAPPENING NOW: We're blocking all entrances to Boeing Building 598 outside St. Louis, the facility that manufactures Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs) and Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) bombs for Israel to drop on Gaza. If politicians won't block the bombs, WE WILL!!
We DEMAND Congress and @potus call for an immediate ceasefire and stop arms sales and funding to Israel. We call on all communities to take direct action to shut down Boeing and other companies that profit from Israel's genocide and occupation.
update at 9 am—
WE SHUT IT DOWN !! All workers have been sent home and deliveries stopped at @boeing building 598.

EDITED TO ADD: St. Louis University posted the 2023 St. Louis Literary Award ceremony; Neil’s talk starts about 40 minutes in. (Thanks DanGuyF)
Tumblr media
In an interview before the event [Neil] Gaiman said that when he started writing comics, he “wasn’t even in the gutter.”
He said: “I used to look up and admire the people in the gutter. The science-fiction people were in the gutter, the children’s literature people were in the gutter, too, and I was so far down, I was in the storm drain.”
Great writeup by Jane Henderson from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch sharing highlights of Neil’s talk at the St. Louis Literary Award!

You are frightened. It’s all right, Percy. Your father sent me to tell you, it’s all right. Just breathe. Your father is here. He’s always been here. It is so hard for him to stand back. To see you struggle. It is so hard for us all. But he’s here. And he’s so very proud. Trust him. Trust yourself. Just… breathe.

Child labor was quite common in America deep into the 20th century. One of the most important reformist organizations was the National Child Labor Committee, created in 1904. Its leaders, many of whom were key figures in the progressive movement, understood that they would need to expose the realities of child labor in a visceral way. So they hired a photographer named Lewis Hine, whose photographs created a haunting record of American child labor.
One of the most common jobs for young boys was as a newspaper seller. Though this was not as grueling as factory work, it did have definite downsides. The day started early — here are some St. Louis newsboys beginning work at 5 am:

The newsboys were often exposed to bad habits on the streets:

Newspaper sellers, unlike most child laborers, did have some protections — “Newsboys’ Protective Associations” formed in many cities, and served as a sort of union and fraternal organization for the kids. Here, the Cincinnati Association is training kids in the “manly art of self-defense:”

content warning prison and police violence - 7/18/23
Longtime disability rights activist and longtime prisoner in St Louis MO, Dawn Dziuba has been put under "partial guardianship" of a state administrator who's working to keep her incarcerated in a forensic ward. Because of her work to help other detainees in St Louis get due process, contacting lawyers about possible class action suits, and other 'jailhouse lawyering,' the state is cutting off her library access, threatening her with dangerous psychotropic drugs, and isolating her from her family. Some of her writing is here and a human rights alert was issued about her case by the Shield project. @bananapeppers @noncompliance @bioethicists These are her current needs / demands :
Tumblr media
DAWN MUST BE ABLE TO: - Make her own medical decisions, including the decision to reject a powerful psychotropic drug. - Change or terminate her guardianship - Leave the ward in order to visit the library. - Enjoy unrestricted access to a computer and use of email account. - Be allowed to live independently
Tumblr media
WHO PROFITS OFF DAWN'S GUARDIANSHIP? SEAN RAPP, (phone 314-622-4989) is a ST. LOUIS PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR who profits off the detention of Dawn and other disabled people.
Tumblr media
We also need supporters to call: - Abigail Schweiger : 314-982-8294 [email protected] - Rachel Linneman, Program Director : 314-877-5971 [email protected] - Dr. Amy Taylor Medical Director (psychiatrist) : 314-877-0522 [email protected] TO DEMAND DAWN'S NEEDS , LISTED ABOVE, ARE RESPECTED!
It's probably a good idea to save these images since they might be deleted by the site. Reposts elsewhere would be hugely helpful. They want to be able to isolate her without people finding out what's happening. Information is also posted at https://mindfreedom.org/front-page/shield-alert-for-dawn-dziuba-in-st-louis-missouri/
