I don't think I had ever heard of this movie until this morning. Watching it,it's quite heartbreaking. Even though it's not based on a true story,people having alzheimer's is quite real. We watch as Alice goes from a 'normal' mind to someone who can't even remember her own family's name. This is heartbreaking. It has been a while since tears escaped my eyes while reading a book. The book focused on the story of Alice, who has a successful career as a cognitive psychology professor and linguistics expert, until she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. At first, it took her a while to acknowledge her symptoms, given that she has a background in psychology. She attributed some of her symptoms to physiological reactions of her body since she is getting old. However, it worsen overtime and affected her functioning at home and at work.

I think, what makes this story more painful is because Alzheimer’s disease is real and it is affecting real people in real life. It can’t be controlled no matter who you are. Even with strong determination, it is not enough to battle it. It also affects the people around and takes toll in relationships. I do not have anyone close to me with Alzheimer’s, but I encountered people who have other neurological disorders and it is not easy. Sometimes, though I am trying to reach out to the person I know, I ended up facing reality that he/she no longer recognize me. Yes, they are still there but in a totally different world. So, there will come a time that a simple recognition can lit up my face with a smile, because it means he/she remembers me today and that moment matters.

The narration of the story can take the reader into the mind of someone like Alice. For the relatives of people with this illness, I wish that they’ll read this book and hopefully it will help in shedding light and gaining understanding to their loved ones.

With other films, I feel that they can be quite entertaining, but not more than that. It felt different with Still Alice. I was actually recommended to watch this film during one of my classes while studying to become a caretaker in a nursing home. The film’s story portrays Alice Howland who is a linguistics professor. She is married with three grown children. It all changes when she begins to forget words and finally she is diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. She and her family’s lives are tested while they face this challenge as she struggles to make most of the time that she has. I have to say that Julianne Moore did a fantastic job playing the role of Alice in my opinion. Where I work I don’t have Alzheimer patients under my care. I do know colleagues who take care of Alzheimer patients. I mostly take care of patients with brain disorders, with most of them it was caused by having a stroke. A lot of them also have physical limitations and are dependent on a wheelchair. Whether you have Alzheimer’s, a brain disorder or any other sort of affliction I think it is very important to understand these patients. Taking care of them doesn’t come easily to every person.
