I recently illustrated a memo game "Endangered Animal Babies" for Treecer. This memo game contains 72 unique illustrations and 36 endangered animal species. Each pair consists of the parent and the baby animal and all the illustrations were done in watercolor.
I'm really grateful for this opportunity and very happy with the outcome of the game! The game is sold by WWF Finland and Treecer at the moment.

Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) "Orangutan" From the Endangered Species series, 1983 (signed & numbered edtion of 150) Screenprint on Lenox Museum Board, 38x38 in [Artwork & image © The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. - educational use]
Warhol selected the orangutan as one of 10 animals for his 1983 Endangered Species series. At the time, there was only one living species recognized. There are now 3 recognized in the genus Pongo, all of which are unfortunately critically endangered: the Bornean Orangutan (P. pygmaeus, w/3 subspecies), the Sumatran Orangutan (P. abelii), and the Tapanuli Orangutan (P tapanuliensis).

Sumatran Orangutan
Sumatran orangutans, whose name comes from the Malay language for "person of the jungle," are critically endangered.
Tumblr media
Website
STATUS: Critically Endangered
POPULATION: 14,613
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Pongo abelii
WEIGHT: 66 – 198 pounds
LENGTH: 4 -5 feet
HABITATS: Tropical and Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests
The Sumatran orangutan is almost entirely arboreal, living in tropical rainforests amid the trees. Females almost seldom travel on the ground, and mature males do it only on rare occasions. Sumatran orangutans are said to be more socially connected than their Bornean counterparts. This has been attributed to the abundance of fruit on fig trees, which allows groups of Sumatran orangutans to graze together. Adult males are usually alone, whereas females are usually accompanied by their young.
Tumblr media
The Sumatran orangutan was once found across the entire island of Sumatra, as well as further south into Java. The species' distribution has shrunk to the north of the island, with the majority of the population concentrated in the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh. Only seven of the nine current Sumatran orangutan populations, each with an estimated population of 250 or more individuals, have long-term viability. More than 1,000 orangutans can be found in only three populations. Bukit Tigapuluh National Park is reintroducing orangutans confiscated from the illegal trade or kept as pets. They have a population of roughly 70 and are reproducing.
Why They Matter
Orangutans perform an important role in the spreading of seeds across a large area. Several tree species, particularly those with bigger seeds, would become extinct if orangutans became extinct.
Tumblr media
Threats
Habitat Loss
Orangutan habitat in north Sumatra is rapidly disappearing, owing to fires, forest conversion to oil palm plantations, and other agricultural activities. This species is reliant on high-quality forests to survive. Forest fires are becoming a common occurrence, with many of them started on purpose to clear land for plantations. Not only can fires destroy enormous swaths of orangutan habitat, but thousands of these slow-moving primates are believed to have perished in the flames.
A plan to build a major road in northern Sumatra threatens one of the orangutan's last surviving habitat areas. The road would not only fracture the forest, but it will also allow illegal logging and human settlements to flourish. Despite evidence that preserving the region will aid long-term sustainable development, the project is moving forward.
Tumblr media
Hunting
Despite the fact that orangutans have been legally protected in Indonesia since 1931, they are still abducted in the wild and kept in households as status symbols. Orangutans are hunted for food in some regions. According to TRAFFIC, the worldwide wildlife monitoring network, orangutans are in grave danger due to a lack of law enforcement against illegal trafficking. Females only have one child every eight or nine years, leaving their populations extremely vulnerable to even low levels of hunting. According to experts, even a 1% loss of females per year due to hunting or other unnatural causes might set a population on an irreversible path to extinction.

The Patreon Token is a cryptocurrency created by three pet-friendly crypto fans to create support for the animal welfare and conservation organizations they love, anytime, anywhere. The Patreon Token was created on December 01, 2021. It is made of 88 million pieces and each cryptocurrency can be divided into 8 decimal places.
Our goal
Our team will distribute a minimum of 80 million PTRN tokens to various aid organizations. This means that we want to send 8,000 tokens for free to at least 10,000 animal welfare and conservation organizations, which can be sold to generate revenue. The remaining 8 million tokens will be used to develop to our project. The most important thing for us is that all animal welfare and conservation organizations on the planet can be easily and instantly supported by everyone, wherever they live or stay in the world.

Stay Close.
Taking care of a young orangutan requires a lot of energy. Maxime Aliaga spent more than an hour observing this mother in the Hutan Pinus/Janthoi Nature Reserve of Sumatra, Indonesia, trying to keep her excitable baby with her in the nest. Since 2011 the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program has released more than 120 confiscated apes into the reserve. Their goal is to establish new wild populations as a safety net against decline. This mother, Marconi, was once held captive as an illegal pet, but was nursed back to health and released in 2011. #

Hi! Can you explain how to tell the difference between the different types of orangutans? 🦧
Absolutely! The three species can be hard to tell apart, but there are small differences which distinguish them. Here's a comparative photo of adult males from each species from NE Primate Conservancy:
Tumblr media
The first in this picture is the Bornean orangutan, and (at least in my opinion) this species looks the strangest, at least in terms of the fully developed adult males. The secondary sex characteristics such as the throat sac and flanges are typically very pronounced in this species whereas I find the Sumatran orangutans to be more subtle and less lumpy. Here's another Bornean male:
Tumblr media
This species has the largest flanges, which tend to angle inwards towards the face. Their fur is also predominantly dark brown and burnt orange-- the darkest in colour of the three species.
The second photo in the comparative photo is a Sumatran orangutan. They have longer facial and body hair than their Bornean counterparts, and the flanged male face shape is more round. Chester Zoo (one of the only zoos in the world that houses breeding groups of more than one orangutan species) describes the flanges of Sumatran orangutans as being more slender compared to the fatty flange of the Bornean orangutan.
The third is the Tapanuli orangutan, the rarest and most recently discovered. Their fur is frizzier and thicker than the other species which is probably the easiest difference to observe if you're looking for yourself. Check out the bed head (and body) on this female Tapanuli orangutan:
Tumblr media
Their fur is also the lightest in colour. Where the Bornean orangutan is dark brown and burnt orange, the Tapanuli orangutan is true orange with blond highlights .
Flanged males also have flatter cheek pads in this species. If the cheek pads are parallel with the rest of the face or tilt slightly outwards it's more likely to be a Tapanuli than either of the others, as flanged male Bornean and Sumatran orangutans sometimes have flange that angle inwards.
So basically:
Bornean orangutans: Dark fur, fat flange
Sumatran orangutans: Long orange fur, slender flange
Tapanuli orangutans: Frizzy orange fur with highlights, flat flange.
If you still can't tell the difference between the species, that is normal! Despite the three being distinct species rather than subspecies, most of their differences are in hard to see aspects like bone shape and size or downright invisible aspects such as genetic markers. Chester Zoo (cited above) even mentions that the differences between individuals are easier to spot than differences between the species. The important thing is that regardless of species, you looked at a wonderful orangutan.

I know many zoos use fruit juice as enrichment/ a reward treat. What kind of juice do apes prefer?
The mental image of a giant orangutan sipping a tiny box of apple juice like a little kid is hilarious-- but what does this enrichment look like in real life?
Every primate has its own favourite fruit juice! Some have real sweet teeth and like classics like apple, some prefer less common ones like carrot or beet, and sometimes gatorade is an acceptable treat. Just like humans, it comes down to personal preference.
Sometimes it does look like giving an orangutan a juice box:
Tumblr media
Iban, a 25-year-old male Sumatran orangutan, using a straw to drink milk from a box at the Ichikawa zoo. A lot of zoos put the juice or other drinks in different containers though so that juice can be obtained in bulk rather than individual servings, and there are no little pieces that can get lost or swallowed. Juice is also frequently watered down so it isn't too sugary. Frozen blocks of watered down juice are popular summer enrichment treats.
There are also bottles for positive enforcement training that allow the primates to open their mouths for the caretakers to squirt juice reward directly into their mouth. This makes it so allowing blood pressure to be taken = a sip of delicious beverage. Apes and monkeys do have a sense of economy however, so you have to make sure the reward is worth it. Some are very cooperative, but some are more shrewd and will basically bargain by refusing to cooperate without a reward they deem acceptable.
So enrichment can look like a lot of things, including juice boxes.

Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis)
For many years, it was believed that there were only two species of orangutan; the Sumatran and Bornean orangutans. However, a distinct population found further south on the island of Sumatra was named as a new species, the Tapanuli orangutan, in 2017. Unfortunately, the critically endangered status of this species as well as the recent status of its discovery means that not much is yet known about it. Aside from basic physical differences, they have an even more arboreal lifestyle than their cousins, and their diet includes unusual foods like caterpillars.

Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii, 苏门答腊猩猩)。 One of the most exciting moments of our Sumatra expedition is seeing these wild hominids, our closest relatives in nature, in their natural habitats. I feel honored and extremely lucky to encounter them; meanwhile, I feel sad on the other hand for their current situation, i.e., they are critically endangered and losing their habitat to humans... Fruit makes up about 60% of a Sumatran orangutan’s diet with durian and figs being the most frequently consumed.  When fruit is scarce, they will also eat leaves, flowers, bark and even the occasional insect or egg! Photo | National Geographic
