SxF 96 Analysis: Some Small Details About the Reveal
Ok, hear me out. I haven't even read the manga for Spy x Family (yet); I've only watched seasons 1 and 2 of the anime, but I've somehow stumbled upon spoilers for the last two chapters (ch. 95 and ch. 96), and other small bits here and there.
And since I am not totally caught up on the story, I hesitate to call this a proper analysis since I'm mostly going off of what I know from the anime at this point. But!
I've been following the chatter and excitement following chapter 96 and I just wanted to throw this quick analysis out there, since I haven't seen some of these details mentioned yet.
So, I'm going to focus on this particular moment, just for what it is. Down the line, after catching up and having all of the character and story details, I might revisit this scene again with additional insight.
Of course, I'm sure we've all seen this panel at this point.
Tumblr media
At first glance, this panel is beautifully drawn. You can tell that it was drawn with a lot of care and attention to detail. Typically, such manga panels are used to emphasize the fact that this is an important moment for these characters and/or the story.
There are even bits of confetti(?) flying around them, reminiscent of cherry blossom petals; this is another known technique used in manga to indicate the emotional importance of a scene for the characters featured.
That all feels pretty obvious, I'm sure. But I also wanted to point out other small details given here, which could potentially add another layer to this scene for folks.
I've seen a lot of discussion around how Anya's admission here is a big deal (and it is). But I haven't seen anyone mention the small detail here that she whispers, "I can read people's minds."
I believe that is also why we see that speech bubble transparently -- to visually show us the softness of her voice in that moment (in addition to representing Anya's willingness to be transparent about herself).
However, let's consider the conversation up until this moment. Right before, Damian had jokingly asked her, "How did you know about my dog and the pond, anyway? What, did you read my mind or something?!"
Of course, he was not expecting Anya to say, "Yes". But it's not the fact that Anya said, "Yes" that makes this scene impactful. Anya could have easily said the exact same words, at normal volume, with a smirk on her face, and nobody would think twice about it. Damian would have immediately understood that she was teasing him. And anyone overhearing their conversation would have thought the exact same thing.
But that isn't what happened. Because Anya was serious in that moment. With a genuine expression on her face, she says, "Yes" and then she whispers her secret to him.
And that is what shocks Damian. That is what causes him to freeze.
In that moment, he's able to sense her sincerity and hear the truth in her words.
His gut reaction is to believe her, whether it's because it's Anya or because of how she said it. It isn't until he has a second to think and his brain kicks into gear that he starts to notice the disparity between what he knows to be true and what Anya is telling him. In a split second, he questions this, and then ultimately rejects the notion that she could be telling the truth.
Why?
The obvious answer would be that what she's told him does not line up with what he knows to be true of reality. The rational and logical part of his brain overrides his heart and his gut, ultimately recognizing this disparity and forcing him to reject Anya's claims.
However, they are at a young enough age that it wouldn't be uncommon to easily believe in "impossible" things like magic or superpowers. So, there's also a chance that it goes a bit deeper than this.
Perhaps this sudden display of sincerity and truth from Anya didn't line up with her typical behavior with him. He's not used to seeing that side of her, and as a result, his mind resorts to him thinking that she's lying to him. He thinks that she's just teasing him. Not only because that's what he expects from her, but also because the only other alternative would be for him to admit that they've just shared a true moment of openness and transparency between them.
Anya's whisper implies, "this is only for you to know." As a defense mechanism, Damian's brain decided that it was more likely that Anya was teasing him than it was that she was being vulnerable with him in that way.
Tumblr media
Another detail from this moment stems from the fact that this reveal takes place while they are dancing together. Partner dancing is an activity that requires cooperation and teamwork. At first, we see Damian and Anya struggle with getting the hang of it, but eventually they start working together.
That, in itself, seems to be a fairly good representation of their relationship with each other. However, even more so, it follows the flow of their conversation in this moment. It isn't until they start cooperating that they start to open up to one another.
And the pinnacle of the conversation -- the reveal -- happens at the exact moment when Damian dips her. Not only does this make for a picturesque panel, but it is also a symbolic visual of what's happening.
Dipping your dance partner inherently requires a level of trust. The person being dipped has to literally put themselves in their partner's hands. Depending on the dip, they are giving up varying levels of control and safety over to their partner. They have to trust that their partner won't drop them, or bring them too close to the floor; they have to give up their balance and trust that their partner can hold the weight that they're giving up. And their partner takes on the responsibility and burden of that person's trust (as well as trusting that the person that they're dipping does not throw themselves around carelessly).
And here, in this scene, despite the bickering we see Anya and Damian do, we see that there is at least that small amount of trust between them. Anya trusts Damian to dip her, and Damian trusts Anya to be dipped.
But underneath the surface level, the fact that Anya whispers her secret to Damian while he's dipping her reinforces the idea that she trusts him with that knowledge. In that moment, she gave up some of her own control and safety, and placed it in Damian's hands. Only his. Her whisper implies, "this is only for you to know." And he's been given the responsibility and burden of deciding whether to hold it, or drop it.

*Awkward silence*
Loid: Soo.... everyone was lying to everyone.
Yuri: At this point, I'm expecting the dog to be an alien.
Anya: No, but Bond can see the future.

Twilight’s Realization on Anya’s Origin
I was always wondering about this scene. I’m curious to know what Twilight had realized or concluded about Anya upon her knowledge of a dead language and why he instantly dismissed the thought of it and the idea of digging deep about it.
Tumblr media
Even though we still never had the clue about what Twilight realized or speculated about Anya, we can catch a glimpse of how crucial it is for him on how he responded to the thought of it. He convinced himself to not think about it and completely ignored it and pushed it out of his mind even though it's almost a habit of his to overthink things. Why?
Tumblr media
As a spy, whenever there are suspicious matters, it is wise to seek the truth about it. Like what he did when he suspected Yor being connected to the secret police. When he was in doubt about Yor’s innocence, he made steps to clear his suspicions on her (even though he was reluctant to do it despite it being a part of his job as spy to begin with).
Tumblr media
Now, back with Anya, he surely realized something big about her. My thoughts were that he immediately dismissed it because what he realized is something that would take Anya away from him. If his suspicions were true about Anya, she needs to be taken away from him and he isn’t prepared to do that. That’s why he convinced himself that what he thought was a crazy idea, that it was impossible to happen, that it wasn’t the truth because if it was, it would be hard for him to accept.
Tumblr media
That is why his blind spot is always his family. SXF fans often make fun of how oblivious Twilight is about everything despite it being so obvious in front of him. Yor wasn’t basically hiding her strength and assassin skills to him. Anya and Bond do things that a normal child and dog normally wouldn’t do. Why do none of the odd things they do make him suspicious about them? Maybe because he was convincing himself that there’s nothing suspicious about them. I’m starting to think that he was actually afraid to dig deep about his family because he’s probably terrified to find out that they weren’t really normal and that would cause them to separate and he still wasn’t ready to step out in his role as Loid Forger (I don’t think he will ever be ready to do that).
But still, it was just a theory of mine that I thought as I reread the chapter and watched the anime. It was just amusing to think that a meticulous spy like Twilight would rather shut down suspicions without checking for facts just because he thought it was impossible or not important, a very sloppy thing for a spy to do.
Tumblr media
Additional note: He even coddled Anya with her favorite meal despite not doing so well in her exams. He was affected by what he realized about her, don't you think?

Post cold-war (read: post reveal/ end of mission etc), the borders are reopened. Loid takes his little family around his hometown.
(Inspired by a personal memory. My grandpa would take my brother and I to this particular river under a highway just to see tadpoles whenever we visit. It’s usually the highlight of my day)
(Also pls don’t repost)
(Also I have no idea how yalls add random hashtags?? I wanna tag #slice of life but for the life of me it wouldn’t show up)???
(EDIT someone saved my ass and I’m eternally grateful)

"Sy-on boy" vs. "Second son"
As someone who a) watches the anime first and then reads the manga (and doesn't read manga chapters that haven't been animated yet), b) is quite cautious about Damian's character and c) doesn't even like Damιanya as a ship, I think I have a very different perspective on Anya's view of Damian - at least, according to the point the anime has reached - to the point that I can get VERY confused whenever I see some shippers talk about that. To the point I go like "Is there something I missed?"
And there IS something I miss. And that's manga-only (or at least manga-first) context.
In Japanese, Loid thinks about Damian being the second son of Donovan Desmond, using the word "次男" (jinan) which literally means "second son".
Tumblr media
Damian uses the same word for himself later,
Tumblr media
and Anya picks that up from then on (though using hiragana characters instead of kanji, as she does in general). And maybe because of that use of simpler characters, the manga translation team decided to have her call Damian "sy-on boy" - a mispronounced "scion boy" - instead of simply "second son".
Tumblr media
The thing is, though "sy-on boy" makes Anya's speech sound simpler and more imaginative, fitting her age more, it can also sound more endearing, cute and affectionate, if you lean towards that. Meanwhile, "second son" can range from neutral at best to derogatory at worst - especially considering that Damian is not dealing very well with the fact that his older brother is already an accomplished Imperial Scholar and has raised the bar very high for Damian.
Again, my first contact with the story was from the anime, where Anya simply calls him "second son".
Tumblr media
Which, if I'm honest, already sounds appropriately silly. Who calls someone, even the second child of a family, that? Anya's use of "haha" for mama and "chichi" for papa is already kind of incorrect when she talks to them, she's young and has still got lots to learn, in the same chapter/episode she called Becky "milady" until Becky reminded her of her name, and also Damian pissed her off so she has no reason to refer to him with his name (yes I'm fully taking her side on this, bully victim for bully victim). She heard both Loid and Damian use "second son" in their thoughts, so same way she called Becky "milady", she picked that up as a way to call Damian.
I actually wonder why the manga translation team went for "sy-on boy". There's no indication that Anya heard the word "scion" ever before, so it sounds out of place, and honestly, with what I said above, out of character for her. In a weird way, though, it actually fits with how she manages a decent score in her "Ancient Language" test many many chapters later.
(I am aware that there was a fan translation of some chapters before the manga got picked up for an official translation. I have no access to the fan translation, so maybe "scion" was used there and it passed on to the official translations in that way?)
Anyway, what I mean to say is that the use of "sy-on boy" may have encouraged a more lenient and even "encouraging" view of Anya's feelings for Damian, even though through her actions and words she keeps showing that she would rather not be around him, but she has a mission to accomplish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with that, though I don't know any Japanese myself, I'm leaning towards the conclusion that "sy-on boy" is not a translation that accurately communicates Anya's sentiments.
And as someone who is very passionate about defending Anya's mistrust of Damian, the use of "sy-on boy" in the manga translation sounds... misleading. Maybe it just feels that way to me because I am a bit more cautious, but it also explains why some fans are so passionate to the point of saying Damian never actually bullied Anya - or to tell me to my face that I shouldn't call Damian a bully because it upsets his fans. If the manga has her use a nickname that could show she's on equal footing with him and could betray, under a certain interpretation, some hidden affection for him, then you kind of understand why people reach that point. It doesn't mean it's right to say Damian was never a bully, or to tell me that after I've shared I still carry scars from having been bullied, but you know. Fandoms will be fandoms.

Autistic Anime Boys Round 3 Match 15
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Gin -
"Gin carries around a stuffed animal cushion called mew-chan, he often ends his sentences in meow or wolf. He canonically has autism in the game. "I don't really get all the details, but… I have this sorta condition called autism, meow… […] If I don't wear this… I feel really embarrassed. I get nervous, woof… I know it's weird, meow…" Quote by Gin. He gets counseling in school for his autism and he wants to work with animals. He gets attached to people easily, he calls the main character big sis Sara, he gives nicknames to most of the people in the game. He always does his best to help out everyone else."
Loid -
"He's a spy. A master of disguise, infiltration, and manipulation. But he's also a loving husband and father. An absolute badass, but still so soft for his little girl. He puts more effort into raising her than most parents ever do for their biological children, and he's only had her for a few months. He's so smitten for his wife too, which is understandable as she's super beautiful, and even more of a loveable badass than he is. He's the brains to her brawn even."

Ok fine, no Nightfall depth
But we did get a good deal of Twilight introspection, Yor was honest with him about her real concerns AND kicked Yuri out on his behalf, as well as some more twiyor crumbs reflecting how their relationship is growing
So yeah the chapter and overall arc is a complete win imo

Anya and Becky Timeskip art!
Tumblr media
personally, I think they would influence each other and get traits from the other. Anya would end up cutting her hair shorter like Becky used to, and Becky would grow it out like Anya used to.
Anya probably mellows out a little not just from Becky but also as she grows and understands the world around her more. She's still the same chaotic peanut loving girl as she used to be, just a little more lively and less impulsive. She's found a proper study pattern thanks to Becky that works and continues loving cartoons.
Similarly, Becky learns to embrace her less refined or generally embarrassing sides. She let's herself be more at ease thanks to Anya, while still being the lovely hopeless romantic she's always been. This leads to her being less self-conscious of her behavior or appearance and be more focused on her enjoyment of such things.
