hannah gets jungwoo to have dinner with and talk to her

“How are you keeping up, Kitsune.”

“I’m pretty good, Yuta-san.”

Their tired comments towards each other were barely audible with the music reverberating throughout the practice room and eleven pairs of footsteps synching with the music. The tension was high, and the whole 127 was using the last bit of energy to do well before practice was passed over to the dreamies, who all happened to be cheering them on.

By the time the music ended, Hannah looked behind her to see Yuta on the ground huffing. Not to say that she wasn’t huffing either, but the victory was in the fact that she was still standing. The cheers of the dreamies filled the room while the 127 members caught their breath. She walked over to pull Yuta from the ground.

“You win this round.” It looked like he was going to put her in a headlock, making her flinch slightly, but he decided to fix her hair instead. “How do you have so much energy?”

“I’m young and fresh,” she flipped her hair at him, making him laugh.

Jungwoo, who watched from beside them, laughed. “I don’t understand what this whole competition is.”

“Just seeing who’s the weaker one,” Hannah smiled at him while poking Yuta’s side. “Clearly, oppa, you’re doing better than Mister Anime Character over here.”

“I have to keep up with you guys somehow, right?”

Jungwoo’s statement may have sailed over the other members’ heads, but it stuck with her. How could it not when that was the same exact thing she was thinking merely a few months earlier?

It was a darker place for her back then. She had pulled away from the members and almost literally worked herself to death just trying to “keep up” with everyone else. Because of that, Haechan and Jaemin had made it a point to sleepover in her and Mark’s dorm ever since then.

She’d think that after all that, everyone would have caught on to those kinds of statements after that whole fiasco, but apparently not. Then again, everyone was exhausted, and Jungwoo had said it so quietly that she wasn’t sure if even Yuta heard it despite him being right behind her.

“8 Dream, your turn!” Their dance teacher’s voice brought her out of her thoughts, along with Jaemin who was already next to her and placing an electrolyte drink in her hand. “Let’s just go over your formations again so the three can rest.”

“Wouldn’t it be better if we have a fifteen-minute break?” Haechan asked hopefully, adding a bit of aegyo to his voice. He huffed when the choreographer gave them a look. “I know, I know. Tight schedule.”

“Let’s go,” she placed her drink down and got up, “because the sooner we start, the sooner we can finish.”

And the sooner she could talk to Jungwoo.

“I’m calling it,” Taeyong advised everyone as soon as he checked his phone, “we’re more than thirty minutes past our agreed ending time. Everyone wash up, eat, and get some rest. Haeeunie, Mark?”

The two who were fixing their bags next to each other both looked at their leader in attention upon being called.

“Yes, hyung?” Mark answered.

“Are you sleeping in the 127 dorms tonight?”

They exchanged looks before turning back to Taeyong. “Not tonight, hyung.”

“The kid’s just too shy to stay with us,” Johnny patted Hannah’s cheek, “which is why she knocks and waits for us to answer before going in. You know the passcode, princess. You can just go in, we know you aren’t some crazy person.”

She froze just the slightest bit at the mention of crazy people, but she laughed it off. “I don’t want to walk in and find any of you naked. Thanks, anyway, oppa.”

She accepted the shirt Johnny had handed her and slipped off the one she was wearing, leaving her in her sports bra for a bit. She laughed as most of her new unit members looked away, still not used to her doing that. Meanwhile, she handed Taeyong a towel as soon as he walked over.

“You do have to wait for a bit for your slippers,” Taeyong began as he helped her wipe the sweat off her back. “Sorry, the ones we ordered for you haven’t arrived yet.”

His words surprised her. They ordered her slippers? Specifically for her? That was strange. The dreamies tended to just wear whatever slippers they had around or just walk barefooted or in socks since they kept the floor clean anyway. No one had a set pair of slippers. Besides, she didn’t even live in the 127 dorms, so she didn’t think they’d get her anything for it.

“Stop giving that look,” Taeyong squished her cheeks into a forced smile, which she instinctively backed away from, making him laugh. “We ordered you a bunch of stuff for the dorm if you ever want to sleep over here during promotions. We know you Lee siblings just live in the building on the other street, but it might be easier for you, you know? My room’s always open for you.”

“Thanks, leader-nim,” she smiled at him before slipping Johnny’s shirt on and tying her hair up in a bun, “but we’re going back to our dorm. Hyuck, too. We have rehearsals in the morning before the Dream Show.”

“We won’t make a ruckus in the morning for you guys this way,” Mark added.

Taeyong looked at them worriedly, “Okay, babies. The three of you make sure to get proper rest okay? Kihyun hyung is my spy, so I will know if you don’t.”

She laughed at him as Haechan moved to stand beside her, taking her bag and throwing an arm around her and Mark’s shoulders, “I’ve got these babies, hyung.”

“You, too,” Taeyong lightly thumped Haechan’s forehead before walking away to check on the rest of the members.

Hannah simply laughed while Haechan gave a loud dramatic reaction to their leader’s actions. With one glance around the room, her eyes fell on the newest addition to the unit. She slipped from under her twin’s arm, leaving him for Mark to handle while she refilled her water bottle.

Jungwoo was already there, quietly filling up a small paper cup with his name written on it, uncharacteristically quiet. Jungwoo had been training with 127 for a while, learning the old choreographies alongside her, but this was his first time training with the exact same knowledge and experience with a song as the rest of the group. It must have felt as strange for him as it did for her when she first learned Cherry Bomb with the group despite not being in the actual comeback, and Touch as well.

“You know,” she smiled up at him while squatting to fill her bottle up after he retracted his cup, “I’d suggest bringing a water bottle to training. A big one.”

“What?” Jungwoo looked at Hannah in surprise as if he was broken out of his thoughts.

She just shrugged and gestured to the rest of the members around the practice room, “Unlike with the Boss unit, these oppas tend to take shorter breaks at longer intervals. You don’t get to drink or breathe as much when you spend time walking here, filling a cup, and all that.”

Jungwoo simply looked at her, as if trying to look into her thoughts. She simply got up and tilted her head at him.

“Oppa,” she called out, “do you want to have dinner with me? We can go to that small restaurant in the street behind the company?”

“That sounds nice,” Jungwoo nodded. “I’d like that.”

Hannah gave a satisfied smile as she walked over to Haechan, taking her wallet out of her bag that now hung on his shoulder. He gave her a curious look.

“Haeeun-ah,” his tone was serious, eyes narrowing slightly, “It’s almost eleven. Where are you going with your wallet?”

“Just the restaurant behind the building,” she told him. “Jungwoo oppa and I are just going to have dinner together and have a little 127 newbies time.”

Haechan’s eyes softened. She had told him before how she had wanted to be able to talk to Jungwoo about them both joining 127 at almost the same time, thinking it was a way for them to get even closer and for them to be reassured they had a companion. Haechan had encouraged this, but their busy schedule had kept her from finding the time so far.

However, it was late at night, and a few of the previous threats Haechan had read made him hesitant to let Hannah out without him by her side at this time. Hannah, knowing him inside-out, already knew how he felt.

“Jungwoo oppa and I will be together the whole time,” she reassured him, “and it’s just to the restaurant and home. We’re only three months apart, Hyuck. You don’t have to treat me like a baby.”

“You know I worry,” Haechan kissed the side of her head. “And I trust hyung. Just be back by 12:30. Mark hyung and I will wait for you at the 127 dorm so we can walk back together. Neither of you are walking alone at night. Oh, and bring me back some of the kimchi fried rice from there, I’d like that for breakfast.”

She just nodded at him, lightly shoving him away with a chuckle before heading to Jungwoo and holding out her hand for him to take. He smiled at her, taking her hand and looking around before quickly pulling her out the door. She laughed and jogged after him, shaking her head at Doyoung’s accusatory voice of her never wanting to hold his hand.

Laughter filled the small space as Hannah and Jungwoo exchanged stories of their time as trainees. The food in front of them disappeared quick as their hunger and exhaustion caught up to them, so they were left sitting and exchanging stories while waiting for the takeout Hannah had gotten for Mark and Haechan.

“It’s crazy, you know,” she told Jungwoo as their previous story wrapped up, “the day I met you, that was the day they told me I’d be in 127.”

Jungwoo met her eyes with a pleasant smile, gently pinching her cheek, “Now we’re both here.”

She instinctively swatted his hand away, making him chuckle. She filled their cups with water as she started speaking again. “I remember first training with the oppas and thinking I needed to do so much to catch up with them. You didn’t hear this from me, but I was maybe just a little bit scared.”

“They had your back, though,” Jungwoo noted.

“Yeah,” Hannah smiled to herself, “they helped me whenever I asked or when I looked confused about something, but still. I only ever spoke to Johnny oppa, Taeyong oppa, and Doyoung oppa out of the other 127 members. I trained with the girls before I trained with Dream.”

“Was it weird?”

“A little bit. I feel a little guilty to debut before the others, but most of them didn’t really like me, anyway. Being added into 127 with the oppas? Definitely weird. I had to take some time to learn the unit’s culture when together and how it differs from Dream.”

Jungwoo nodded in understanding. Training with other trainees was one thing. Training with the Boss unit was different. Training with 127 was another set of unwritten rules he had to figure out as well.

He pulled jokes and was friendly with the members, but he mostly stayed quiet during actual training in order to catch wind of how things work and to focus on being on par with the members to not burden them.

“It feels a little like I have to earn my spot in the unit,” she admitted.

The older boy looked at her in surprise. “You feel that, too?”

She shrugged, “127 achieved a lot in the past two years since debut. I felt like the odd one out for a while. Thus the whole icing-everyone-out situation a few months ago.”

“Right,” he nodded, “we were all worried. You were never the odd one out.”

“Neither are you,” she smiled at him, “I want you to know that. You deserve to be in NCT as much as any of us, and in 127, too.”

Jungwoo snorted before looking down at their table. “That’s why you wanted to get dinner with me, huh?”

“We 127 newbies have to stick together, don’t we?” She poked his head to get his attention. “I’ve got your back. We can gang up on everyone else. It’s you and me, oppa.”

He laughed, nodding at her. “It’s you and me, Hannah. I guess it’s nice to have someone who I can go through this with.”

“I think so, too.”

Before they could continue their conversation, the restaurant owner came, placing the takeout on the table and greeting them goodnight. Having already paid earlier, the two kids left the store with a grateful bow.

Hannah quietly watched a more relaxed Jungwoo chatter as they walked back to the dorm. She didn’t know if she could do it, but she’d try her damn best to make sure he didn’t feel the way she felt all those months ago.

‘Wow, Mae, you really captured Uncle Doyoung’s spirit there,’ Mark grins.

Maeve holds up her Christmas card for Doyoung proudly, showing off the rabbit with a Santa hat she’d drawn on the front with ‘Merry Christmas Doyoung Samchon’ written in messy toddler handwriting on the front.

‘Although, I think we need to work on your Hangul. You wrote Samchon in English..’

Maeve just looks sheepish, putting the card into the finished pile and grabbing another plain one to start.

This was a Lee household yearly tradition. The kids would sit down at the dining table, cover it with pens, glitter and whatever crafting materials they could get their hands on, and make cards for family and friends.

When it came to the sheer amount of NCT members, it was a full on operation. The members had been randomly assigned to each of your three children, who would make their cards. You and Mark would write the inside messages once they were finished and all the glue and or paint had dried.

‘Wait, why does Maeve get Uncle Johnny?’ Noah whines once he notices Johnny’s name on Maeve’s list.

‘It’s random, No,’ you explain, ‘it’s fair that way.’

‘But I wanted to make Uncle Johnny’s card,’ he pouts.

‘Buddy, the card will still be from you, and Uncle Johnny will know that,’ Mark rubs Noah’s back with his hand, ‘how about you make a really pretty card for Uncle Taeyong, huh? I bet he’d love a really glittery one!’

‘Daddy, can we come to work with you and give Uncles their cards?’ Noah asks, wanting to see his beloved Uncle’s reactions to his work.

‘Of course, how about you and mummy/mommy drop me off tomorrow, and we can give them to Uncles then?’

‘Yay!’ Noah cheers, accidentally knocking over a pot of silver glitter.

‘Uncle Ten!’ Maeve runs into the practice room, barrelling towards the first member she sees.

‘Mae!’ He exclaims with equal excitement, wrapping the small girl into a big hug.

‘Sorry to interrupt your practice, guys,’ you apologise, knowing that all of the members are gathered to rehearse for their end of year project.

‘It’s all good,’ Jungwoo, the closest person to you grins, ‘it’s nice to have a break.’

He catches Maeve’s eye, his face suddenly lighting up, immediately dropping to his knees to offer a hug, ‘and to see my Yeoreum!’

‘Ah, Minjun-ah,’ Jaemin squats down to greet Noah, ‘what’s that you’ve got?’

Noah holds out the envelope with both hands, a messy ’Nana’ scrawled across the front.

‘Ah, thank you,’ Jaemin always saves his aegyo for his favourite nephews and niece, his Mark’s children.

‘This one’s for you, Uncle Yangyang,’ Maeve hands Yangyang his card.

‘Wow, thank you MaeMae, you’re so kind,’ Yangyang, who has crouched down to her level, peels the envelope open, laughing when he sees the sheep with the Christmas hat drawn on it.

‘I like how the sheep is pink and glittery,’ he adds, pulling her into a hug, ‘I love it, thank you Mae.’

The members fuss over the kids, each giving very exaggerated but genuine reactions to their individual cards.

‘Ah, Hyungjun-ah, thank you,’ Chenle fist bumps Lucas, ‘you write in Chinese so well.’

‘It’s from the lessons you gave me,’ Mark chimes in teasingly, and the two men laugh as Lucas huffs.

‘Yeoreum-ie, your art is so good!’ Yuta fusses over Maeve, who blushes and squirms at his compliment over her drawing of him next to a Christmas Tree.

‘Don’t get all embarrassed!’ he teases, poking her side, before turning to Sicheng who’s standing beside him and commenting, ’so cute.’

When Lucas notices Johnny holding his own card, he walks over to talk to his favourite Uncle.

’Tell Jude-hyung that I’ll give him his card the next time I see him,’ Lucas tells Johnny, ‘I don’t want him to think I’ve forgotten about him when you bring that one home.’

‘Will do buddy, I’m sure you’ll see him when the school holidays start.’

‘Are you guys not going to Chicago?’ Lucas tilts his head in confusion.

‘Not ’til the twentieth,’ Johnny explains, ‘you guys should arrange to hang out. In real life, not just on the Xbox or whatever it is.’

Lucas just shrugs, embarrassed at being called out, and Johnny chuckles.

‘I’m just messing with you, go on, go give Uncle Seunghan his card.’

‘They’re so sweet, Hyung,’ Jisung remarks, watching the scene alongside Mark, ‘so crazy I’ll have one of my own in a few months.’

’They’re a handful,’ Mark shakes his head, still smiling, ‘but I love them more than anything.’

At that moment, Noah runs up to Jisung, clutching Jisung’s own card.

In a corner, several members are gathered comparing cards, Doyoung throughly enjoying Maeve’s rabbit drawing while Xiaojun praises Noah’s reindeer.

‘Thank you, Noah, I’ll keep it forever,’ Taeyong reads the message inside of his card, on which Noah has drawn a polar bear wearing a lime green (’NCT colour!’) scarf.

‘Will you really?’ Noah gasps, shocked that his Uncle would treasure his creation for so long.

‘Of course, because my Minjun-ie made it for me!’

Eventually, all of the cards are distributed, and the three Lee children sit against the mirror and watch as the members go through their dance performance for the year.

‘What did you think, Mae?’ Hendery bends down to ask, face showing a picture of pure joy when she begins bouncing on her feet and enthusiastically chatting about what she likes about the song and the choreography.

‘Come on kids, say goodbye to your Uncles. We’ll get out of your hair now, leave you to practice,’ you start gathering up your things, leaving the three of your children to say goodbye to all of the members.

’See you when you get home,’ you give Mark a quick hug, pressing a chaste kiss to his cheek as to allow him to avoid unnecessary teasing from his members.

‘Bye bye little Lees,’ Ten and the rest of the members wave you all out of the room.

‘Now, kids,’ you announce once you’re fully in the corridor, ‘let’s go and harass Uncle Minseok.’

What Kind Of Person Is JiHo (By NCT)

During fansigns we tried to ask each member “What kind of person is JiHo (to you)” and we got almost all members’ answers.

I hope you enjoy this video and we hope that maybe JiHo gets to stumble upon this video and see how much her members care for her.

“JiHo?” he giggles and seems a bit surprised by the mention of JiHo’s name. “She’s a very hardworking and strong person. I think she can be a great role model to people as well. She’s very caring.”

“JiHo?”

“Yes, what kind of person is she to you?”

Taeil thinks about it for a second while he signs the album on the table in front of him. “She’s a scary young sister.” Both him and the fan laugh. “But a sister I want to have around for forever.”

Taeil and JiHo moments are rare which is why I treasure moments like these a lot TT

“She’s a pain in the a— butt,” he laughs loudly. “No, but really she’s a very kind person. I’m glad I’ve met her and that she’s in NCT. Sharing a stage with her is always a lot of fun.”

“I think she’s actually mad at me currently?”

“Why?” the fan asks.

“I think she’s jealous I love Mark so much. You didn’t know that right?”

“What?”

“That JiHo can get really jealous about trivial things? I honestly don’t think it bothers her, but she likes to make me feel bad and uses a lot of aegyo towards the hyungs/oppas. She’s really cute, but only with the people she’s comfortable showing that side to. I’m grateful I’m one of those people.”

“She’s like my real sister. Really annoying sometimes, but I care for her a lot. JiHo is someone who gives a lot, even if it’s in very subtle ways. She gives you time and comfort. She gives you exactly what you need to feel better. But JiHo is hard at taking, she won’t let you help her fully. So I think she isn’t 100% [happy] at any given time. She’s a kind person... A one of a kind person.”

I don’t think I fully understand her, but I guess that’s her charm.”

“No don’t worry!” he laughs. “JiHo is someone who listens really well. Even if it looks like she didn’t listen or doesn’t care, she always does. K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Red Velvet (Part ONE)

A Disclaimer: I was planning, when I first started Tumblr, to be a lurker, but then I began an office job and needed something to listen to to keep myself occupied. And then, I started going through entire K-pop groups’ repertoires, album by album, and jotting down my thoughts. And then, I stumbled into K-pop tumblr and decided, you know what, there’s at least four people on this hell site who would read in depth rants about these discographies and at least five who wouldn’t read it and then get mad because it’s kind of our job as K-pop fans. My lukewarm takes should be taken with an entire silo of salt and the knowledge that this is completely for fun and occupying my very bored, very neurodivergent brain. All this to say, for the love of god, I’m a sleep-deprived student and I don’t have time for internet hate, so don’t kill me. With that being said, enjoy!

Here are my credentials: Red Velvet was the first k-pop group I ever loved, even though Blackpink was really my introduction. I became a ReVeLuv in 2019, because of Russian Roulette, and I’ve been a fan since, including of the members’ solo careers (Wendy in particular). But as I’ve gotten more into k-pop and since they come back so infrequently, I haven’t really been keeping up with them and I feel like I’m less of a fan than I once was. So, I’m super excited for their comeback on the 13th (especially with a full album!) and I’m hoping that through this deep dive, I’ll fall back in love just in time for the new album.

Red Velvet is almost a decade old, having debuted with four members (Wendy, Joy, Irene, and Seulgi) in 2014, with the 5th, Yeri, being added the year after. Red Velvet is known for their dual concept: the poppier, brighter Red side and the R & B focused, more sensual Velvet side, which sets them apart from many girl groups of their time that were pigeonholed into either “cute / naive” or “sexy / mature”.

Happiness is their official 2014 debut (again, with four members). While I do like this song, I don’t find myself coming back to it often because it just doesn’t sound like Red Velvet to me; it’s bubbly and odd, but in a similar way to a lot of k-pop; it sounds like many other “quirky” k-pop groups from the same time, and just a bit too young for a group who were all adults at the time. Wendy’s bridge remains a highlight, but like NingNing’s vocal showcase in Next Level, it doesn’t fit the song enough, and I wish it was in a better one so I could love it more.

Be Natural is the balance of sorts to Happiness, a more mature R & B track that’s a cover of the 2001 classic by S.E.S. I love the jazzy background of this one, and the kind of drawn-out pull of the vocals that sound much smoother than in Happiness. It was this song that proved RV could be more than just their debut, and could tackle both more childish and more grown-up concepts. While this is a cover, they put their own spin on it, though I admit I’m not a fan of Taeyong’s part, as I’m almost never in favor of random rap verses in very subdued songs. Also, I’m not a choreo blog, but shoutout to all the difficult work that they do dancing on the chairs, because my back hurts just watching it.

Ice Cream Cake marks the introduction of Yeri, which gives me a fair bit of bias towards this as I’m happy to see them all together. It’s bubbly and bright with almost impressive amounts of aegyo that’s definitely a product of its overly bubbly 2015 k-pop world, especially the rap verse that just jumps in out of nowhere. While it has far more personality than Happiness does (like in the slight creepiness of the playground-esque lalalala’s and the bizarre music video), I think that it’s still very much a marker of the beginning stage of Red Velvet’s career when they were still figuring out their identity as a band. I want to be clear that it’s not a bad song. But it doesn’t stack up to the instant classics that we’ll see in a bit.

Automatic, like Be Natural for Happiness, is the Velvet balance for Ice Cream Cake, and where ICC feels very young, Automatic is far more sleek and graceful in its delivery. It’s a gentle R & B track that glides along like it’s dancing on its tiptoes the whole time. It clearly was put together after the success of the Be Natural cover, and while there are similarities, I prefer Automatic for two reasons: a) Yeri’s there, rounding out the voices well, and b) It sounds more like a Red Velvet song, with a few little quirks. The instrumental is minimalistic, which lets the voices speak for themselves, and it’s the first title in this series I’ve loved on first re-listen.

From the Ice Cream Cake EP, Stupid Cupid was an immediate favorite. Starting off with that Western-movie-esque guitar, its intonation and production is reminiscent of a 2nd gen title, Girls Generation in particular. Normally I’m not a fan of a slight drop between pre-chorus and chorus, but it works here. I even don’t mind the rap verse, as the humor in it fits more with the tone of the song than one usually does. I never gave this song a second thought before, so I’m glad I found it.

Dumb Dumb is the first song that feels quintessentially Red Velvet in this review. It’s very much a “throw things at the wall” track, with that delightfully funky instrumental and a never-stopping drumline that feels like it’s beating your heart for you. It’s a song that feels like it shouldn’t work, between the key changes, the tempo changes, the many repetitions, the chanting, etc, and yet…it does? Dumb Dumb toes about five dozen tightropes perfectly, and I have no idea how. This song has so many things that are genuine pet peeves of mine, but I love it anyway, and if anyone could pull this off (with a random verse honoring Michael Jackson), it’s them.

The Red is almost universally known as an excellent album, and I can’t talk about every song (even though I would!), so I’ll just talk about a few of my favorites: Huff n’ Puff, Campfire, and Don’t U Wait No More. Huff n’ Puff bounces back and forth with an oddly warped instrumental and off-beat clapping, then ties it all together with a great bridge and its titular refrain. Campfire has more sing talk than I normally enjoy, but it’s still melodic and its brassy chorus more than makes up for it. And Don’t U Wait No More has an interestingly clipped call and response in its chorus that is now very much stuck in my head.

One Of These Nights is a surprising choice for a single, especially for 2016. Many reviewers responded with mixed or even negative opinions on it after the delightful bombast that is Dumb Dumb, and I can see why they did. One Of These Nights is not a song for everyone; it’s quiet, melancholy, and honestly depressing, and yet it’s so beautiful and heartfelt that it’s honestly my favorite of their singles. It was made to mark the Korean festival of Chuseok (that is, in legend, the one day of the year where two fabled lovers can reunite, before they have to part again), and that gentle yearning and happiness with an edge of tragedy is so comforting for anyone coming out of grief but still remembering the good times. Red Velvet’s voices are something special; they’re great separately, but together, they’re just stunning.

The Velvet is less critically praised than The Red, but I love both Rose Scent Breeze and Light Me Up. Rose Scent Breeze may seem like just another b-side at first, but it soon goes from gentle melancholy to a furious guitar riff-led power ballad that lifts you up without losing its palpable emotion. Light Me Up is an R & B song too, but has a youthful energy and a joy not found in their other “Velvet” songs. As both a queer person and a huge fan of Wendy’s voice, I admit I like her “La Rouge” version more than the original, though the harmonizing at the end feels like honest-to-god floating.

Russian Roulette starts with a similarly creepy “lalala” to the one in Ice Cream Cake, and was actually the first Red Velvet song I ever heard. It bounds forward with the choppy energy of a classic video game, and between the insane catchiness of its hook and the bizarre combination of murderous Tom-and-Jerry imagery and skyscrapers of aegyo, it’s no surprise it went viral. It both fits perfectly into k-pop cliches and pokes fun at them in the process, zig-zagging between what seems like a sweet love song and the visuals of a gang of expressionless dolls. It is…utterly bizarre, and, just like the first time, I’m utterly enthralled.

What to say about the EP? I love this entire album, and it’s so hard to choose a hidden gem. Lucky Girl, Fool, and Bad Dracula are all excellent tracks, and I love all of the different combinations of doo-wop, synth, and other vintage genres too. I’ve got to say that my favorite is Lucky Girl, though, partially for the delightful catchiness of the song as a whole, partially for the inclusion of actual “shoo-be-doo-wop” vocalization, and partially for the immaculate Girls Generation-esque 50’s/60’s production.

Rookie is not and never has been a song for me. It’s not that it’s a bad song, per se, and I actually enjoy the greater part of the verses. Red Velvet’s voices are great as always, and I also love that bridge. This song, truth be told, annoys me more than anything, because it’s so, so close to being good. But why, why, why, did they have to give it a chanty, aegyo-filled hook? Come on, guys, we were almost there. We could’ve had another so-crazy-it-just-might-work situation like Dumb Dumb, but instead there’s too much crazy and not enough working for me.

From the Rookie EP, I honestly preferred almost every song to the title, but Little Little was my favorite. It’s slow and quiet at first, and during the verses, you’ll think it’s bound to be depressing. But then, like an opposite version of Rookie, the chorus completely changes the song, turning it into a dreamy R & B ballad that’s been a fixture on my sleep playlist for years.

If the last few songs have been upbeat, Red Flavor is practically jubilant. It’s been called THE summer k-pop song, and for good reason. It bounces off the metaphorical walls, full of delight and youthful energy. Even the verses, albeit slower, set up that juggernaut of a chorus with its distinctive “red, red, red flavor” distortion in the post. I’m sure this is just me being a ReVeLuv, but this song is so nostalgic for me and never fails to make me a bit sappy, especially the slightly wistful outro. I don’t mind the rap, but I wish we could’ve gotten more of the singing section of the bridge instead. Overall though I really like this one.

The Red Summer is one of their strongest EPs, and while I wanted to give Mojito a quick shout-out, my hidden gem is, without a doubt, You Better Know. If you’ve read at least one of the disclaimers at the top of my reviews, you’ll know I’m neurodivergent. I have autism, and I kind of didn’t let myself believe it for a while. But one day I was walking outside and this song came on, and its message was just what I needed to finally let go and let myself stim for the first time. If you don’t have autism, it’s almost impossible to explain the pure rush of joy that stimming (especially after so long repressing it) can bring, and so whenever You Better Know comes up on my playlist, I find myself fighting a huge grin and getting the urge to dance. God, I love this song so much. I’m trying not to smile right now.

Peek-A-Boo: this was the song I considered my favorite Red Velvet single for a while, although One Of These Nights currently takes that trophy. From the start it crackles with an odd, tongue in cheek humor and a “well what do you want from me” shrug. The instrumental seems to pop out of random places, between a twinkling piano, snapping fingers, and some kind of chime that I can’t place, which go far better with the vocals then I would have assumed. I wish they’d pushed the voices more to be honest, because they feel a bit subdued here (and not in an expressive way like in Automatic), besides the last chorus, but otherwise this one still holds up for me. Because hey, who doesn’t want to watch five girls in rainbow dresses kidnap pizza boys from their cabin in the woods?

From the Perfect Velvet album, I have one main stand out. Kingdom Come needs no introduction for ReVeLuvs since it’s already practically required reading for anyone looking to get into the fandom. I admit I was put off from it for a while because it didn’t live up to being treated like the second coming of Christ, but I’ve definitely warmed up to it. It’s so soothing and warm, like a cat curled up by a fireplace, and Red Velvet’s voices come together almost perfectly to set the scene.

Bad Boy takes an even greater shift away from the Red side and towards the Velvet. One would think that a song like this would be boring and barely leave an impact, and they would be completely wrong. Bad Boy possesses a self-assured and smooth R & B flair reminiscent of Taemin’s more subdued tracks, and moves forward with an unhurried strut. It’s often cited as the pinnacle of their Velvet side, and I might have to agree. I don’t have a hidden gem for the Perfect Red Velvet repackage, since it’s only a couple songs.

So this is where we’ll take a break, because I think we’re about halfway through their discography. Like in the BTS review, I’ll leave my final thoughts until next time, and invite you to touch some grass and eat some Doritos.

They work quietly, though I think it's because there's some unfamiliarity lol. I think Kun and Mark both try to liven up the atmosphere a bit, though I think Mark's goofiness helps a little more than Kun's more formal way of speaking. Jaemin is definitely shy, because he's not familiar with Winwin and Kun and he's really only familiar with Mark. Winwin is familiar with both Kun and Mark so he and Jaemin are a little more formal. So basically I think that's why they work quietly and quickly lol.

“Here are the food and drinks menu. I’ll be back shortly to take your orders.” The server smiled before leaving your table.

Taeyong leaned forward in his seat, resting his chin in his palms and batted his eyelashes cutely.

You arched an eyebrow at him. “What is it?”

“I’m always the one drinking. You should drink too.”

You gave him a pointed look. “You do know how you are when drunk, right? I need to be completely sober when taking care of you.”

He huffed out and leaned back against his chair with slumped shoulders. “But I won’t drink tonight. I want you to have fun too,” he whined softly with a small pout.

You rarely drank, it always being your responsibility in taking care of your friends and boyfriend Taeyong. So you didn’t really have an idea how you were when drunk, or even how much you needed to get to that point. Taeyong consistently being stressed with his work had you let him drink beyond his senses, which didn’t require a lot of consumption being the lightweight that he was.

Biting your lower lip, you felt conflicted. Should you risk drinking when not knowing what kind of a drunk you’d become? “I don’t know...”

He gave you a reassured smiled. “I won’t force you, of course. Just know that I won’t drink tonight in case you want a bit of freedom.”

Stepping out of the restaurant bar and into the slight breeze of the night, you refused to believe that your head was spinning when clearly the world was. Your body swayed side to side while waiting for Taeyong to come out after paying. Once he did, you giggled at him.

“You paid,” you stated bit more loudly than your usual voice did.

Blinking at you, he nodded. “Yeah I did.”

Laughing, you said, “It’s so funny. I’m always the one paying after your drunk ass and this time you paid.”

Double blinking, he didn’t know what to say. “Uh...”

The city streets were filled with bodies heading in different directions for their lively nights. “Let’s go!” You cheerfully twirled on your spot making you lose balance slightly. “Whoa,” you flailed your arms out to steady yourself and began walking down the sidewalk.

More like you were learning to walk by planting one foot ahead of the other one at a time.

Taeyong merely stared at you, mouth slightly agape. He never thought you’d be a lightweight as well, getting drunk quickly over barely a glass of sparkling wine. He never thought you’d talk so much when drunk. Throughout dinner, your eyes wandered around to gaze out the window and kept pointing stuff out that you’d never say aloud and only kept to yourself, like spotting a cute puppy, or a child holding a balloon, or the way triplets dressed the same, or a couple riding a bicycle together. Small daily things that Taeyong never thought you paid attention to came out of you tonight, which had him grateful to learn a little more about you.

“Yongie, I think I’m going to fall,” you said seriously even though your pace was slow than usual and you still had your arms out for balance.

He smiled at you. The sidewalk was straight and wasn’t too crowded like rush hours normally were. “Don’t worry. Just grab my arm if you’re gonna fall.”

Not even five seconds later, you did. Just when you felt like you were going down a slope, but you weren’t, you grabbed him, curling both your hands around his forearm.

Taeyong felt warm and contented being able to take care of you for once. The night continued as the two of you leisurely trailed around the city. A chocolate shop caught your attention and you let go of your boyfriend to wander off inside with him right behind you.

You eyed the wide selections on display and jabbed your finger at a chocolate dipped waffle cone. “I want this!” you whined loudly.

You got what you wanted, thanks to Taeyong card.

After happily munching on your waffle, without sharing it with your boyfriend unless he did kiyomi aegyo which had you laughing on the ground, a clothing store attracted you.

Your hands freely roamed around feeling the various fabrics hung on the racks. While Taeyong was briefly distracted by the sight of red sunglasses, he nearly missed you giddily leaving the shop with an unpaid beanie on your head. Panicked, he rushed to drop a bit of cash to the cashier before sprinting to catch you.

Peace returned in the form of you drooping between sleep and wake when resting your head on Taeyong’s shoulder while your arms were wrapped around his arm. The two of you trailed along the path in a park and just when Taeyong thought the night would soon be over, he was wrong. At the sight of the swings, you let him go and dashed for it, nearly tripping on your feet with a scream before steadying yourself and continued your way.

Taeyong huffed out a breath, relieved that you didn’t get hurt, and followed after you.

You changed your mind when you caught sight of a huge steering wheel on a high deck. Your staggered feet tried to find footing on the steps to climb yourself up and Taeyong hurried to your side, making sure you wouldn’t fall off.

As soon as your hands planted themselves on the wheel, you began shouting. “Everyone! This is your captain speaking!”

Stressed, your boyfriend whipped his head around the park, finding a few heads turning in your direction and being amused by your stunt.

Throwing his head in his hands from the second-hand embarrassment, Taeyong figured it was going to be a long night.

You woke up ruffling in the sheets, comfortable and relaxed in bed. Turning to your side, you found Taeyong already wide awake and gazing lovingly at you.

Stretching your arms out with a yawn, you asked, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

He chuckled softly. “Guess I’m not the only one a handful when drunk.”

This and the way he did the same to Taeyong are the most funnest and realist Jaehyun experience ever... Both the older hyungs don't judge him and also both pamper him so he gets away with a lot. Same with yuta, jaeyu are the closest thing to friends in 127 yuta has. They both support eo for everything, even damn jokes but no one ever talks about jaeyu being close. The same with jaehyuck now, they're both alot closer than jaemark but coz jaemark was talked about near debut so it became a lore in the fandom...

I've realised most new fans don't research their idol but follow the fan lore about them, it's not just 12u but also the other group I follow alot shinee.

I'll also never forget the ice cubes in taeyongs trousers story or Taeyong talking about Jaehyun controlling and having power in 127 {which I think is coz doyoung (and to some extent Taeyong)agrees with him and makes that thing the way Jaehyun wants it to be}

Jaehyunnie isn't just pretty boy, he's a baby girl... A sulky moody teenager but also a very supportive friend and colleague.

Btw other then on camera doyoung is never a baby girl so I don't get the cute protective fans of his...

The original maknae

Fans underestimate the history of growing up together and first impressions. Jungwoo and Doyoung vs Mark and Doyoung are a good example of meetings during different stages of life. Jungwoo had to persuade Doyoung to treat him more like a child, Mark can't persuade Doyoung to not treat him like a child. After 20 an age gap is not a big deal, but even a year is a lot during school days. Mark wants to be a part of the 95-line, which makes Johnny amuzed. The way Mark tries to achieve same footing with the hyungs, the same way Jaehyun has been doing it. Especially with Taeyong it is evident how hard it is to break from "the original maknae" role for him. Tae wants Do to be his same-age friend (officially, they have half a year difference, and it is possible due to the way Koreans count years, Do just doesn't want to drop "hyung"), and Jae to stay his cute dongsaeng. Jaehyun looks older than Tae, who also is smaller than him and behaves childishly, so it's easy for fans to forget about that.

Jaehyun didn't live with the older trainees during trainee and rookies days. I think he joined around 20 y.o.? When did he write that letter to his mother about leaving the nest and fending for himself? Which made him a "small child" even more in the hyung line's eyes. He was kept out of "adult conversations". Doyoung's thoughts back then were occupied with how to dress everyone nicely to look as cool adult during Jae's graduation and how to keep him warm during winter with scarves.

based on 'his dark materials' by phillip pullman. somewhat based on their emoji or their general impression, so not exactly soul accurate or to be taken seriously. it's for fun anyway. enjoy!!

taeil - robin bird

–coz this hyungs has a mischievous streak we been know

–them inquisitive, innocent beady eyes

–but very sweet so he's a real/fake maknae

–chirps and flutters when taeil does aegyo (while the neos loose their minds)

–easy going (nonechalant. ignorant🤣) of other dæmons' chaos, like john

–would lower its front before another dæmon playful stance when Johnny's in a teasing mood to the others

–can u imagine this big fluff jogging beside Youngho when he's out walking in New York or the red carpet

–barks and runs about for hours when they're back in Chicago

taeyong - ragdoll cat

–elegance, grace, and beauty. fitting for a leader

–but then the boba eyes get big and that's bubu for you

–grooms or head bumps the younger members' daemon when taeyong's babying them

–bumps taeyong's chin whether in an adoring or protective mood

–oh, she'd hiss and claw when tae's threathened. talking to the company does that.

–lovingly stares at tae's fishies

yuta - red fox

–as aloof as yuta's tsudereness

–but would let jisung's daemon sits on her head during nct world, and nuzzled mark's even though it's bigger than her

–graceful, lithe, and sleek, uet somewhat clumsy and brash

–BTW HAVE YOU SEEN FOX RUNNING n laughing? definitely yuta in his wild moments

–like when yuta's about to spill that tea (or lie💀😭)

–or after making a teasing remark to the members

kun - red panda

–another cute leader

–curls on his lap or watches the monitor when kun's making tracks

–tail circled around kun's neck when they walk out and it's cold

–or tips off his hats and beanies to hold on his head. (kun's hair got exposed one time, and after that pre-comeback livestreams are a struggle. not that kun would stop)

–sits on the corner of the counter when kun cooks

–shares a stare when the wayv kids frustrates them
