Finding Tarot Signifiers with Astrological Decans

Here’s a very brief tutorial on how to use astro.com to pull up a chart, understand which decans you’re looking at, and look up which cards are associated with those decans. 

Finding your decans: 

First, go here and input your birth date information. You’ll need your birth time for an ascendant. Then it will take you to this page. 

It’s optional but to get a chart like the one I’ll show - under “Zodiac and houses”, select the “whole sign” house system. 

Less optional is under “Display and calculation options”, select “Chaldean decans”. 

Then hit “Show Chart”.

It’ll bring up a chart like this: 

What I’ve circled in red are the “Big Three” - Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Decans are counted counter-clockwise through the signs. 

The Ascendant of this chart is in the first decan of Scorpio - Scorpio I. 

The Sun (circle with a dot in it) is in the second decan of Aquarius - Aquarius II.

The Moon (crescent) is in the third decan of Gemini - Gemini III. 

Alternatively you can scroll down and use the list format: 

The first decan of each sign is 0 degrees - 9 degrees

The second decan is 10 degrees - 19 degrees

The third decan is 20 degrees - 29 degrees

So you can see: 

The AC (short for Ascendant) is at 1 degrees Scorpio - so it’s in the first decan.

The Sun is at 12 degrees Aquarius - so it’s in the second decan. 

The Moon is at 22 degrees Gemini - so it’s in the third decan. 

Finding the cards for the decans:

Queen of Wands - Pisces III, Aries I, Aries II

King of Pentacles - Aries III, Taurus I, Taurus II

Knight of Swords - Taurus III, Gemini I, Gemini II

Queen of Cups - Gemini III, Cancer I, Cancer II

King of Wands - Cancer III, Leo I, Leo II

Knight of Pentacles - Leo III, Virgo I, Virgo II

Queen of Swords - Virgo III, Libra I, Libra II

King of Cups - Libra III, Scorpio I, Scorpio II

Knight of Wands - Scorpio III, Sagittarius I, Sagittarius II

Queen of Pentacles - Sagittarius III, Capricorn I, Capricorn II

King of Swords - Capricorn III, Aquarius I, Aquarius II

Knight of Cups - Aquarius III, Pisces I, Pisces II

Pages vary. Thoth systems tend to align them differently than Rider Waite systems and so many decks are removed from both at this point that it’s often easier to read and see which feels right to you. Some people pair them with the Queens or Kings and others use them to represent the element of the suit - similar to aces. I don’t typically use them as signifiers unless they had a traditional relationship to someone’s work. . 

How to figure out which pip corresponds with a decan (Quick Version):

Signs: 

Aries - Cardinal, Fire

Taurus - Fixed, Earth

Gemini - Mutable, Air

Cancer - Cardinal, Water

Leo - Fixed, Fire

Virgo - Mutable, Earth

Libra - Cardinal, Air

Scorpio - Fixed, Water

Sagittarius - Mutable, Fire

Capricorn - Cardinal, Earth

Aquarius - Fixed, Air

Pisces - Mutable, Water

Cardinal signs are the 2, 3, and 4 for each suit.

Fixed signs are the 5, 6, and 7, for each suit.

Mutable signs are the 8, 9, and 10 for each suit. 

Fire signs are wands. 

Earth signs are pentacles. 

Air signs are swords. 

Water signs are cups. 

The first decan is the first number and suit in the progression. The second is the second and so on. 

Ex: Aries  - cardinal (2,3,4), Fire (wands).

Aries I is 2 of Wands

Aries II is 3 of Wands

Aries III is 4 of Wands.

When I first started reading tarot, learning and studying the cards seemed sooo daunting. There's 78 cards and as a capricorn rising, I was like, I'm gonna memorize them all. and that quickly fell apart because Memorization is not the key. If you want to understand and learn tarot, there's a few different ways you can do so.

1. Read about the story the tarot is telling.

Each card is just one specific place in a story. Read up on the overall story these cards are telling on a large scale and on a small scale. What's going on in one specific card story-wise?

How to NOT read tarot pacs :

Do not constantly check up on your person's "current feelings" you can do it like once or twice a month, but almost everyday is a big no! Trust me.

Do not peek into someone's private life especially people who do not know you, like celebrities, crushes etc.

Do not think that whatever a reading says is FIXED and you can't do anything about it. Your life is in your control, tarot just reads your current energy and it can change the moment you decide.

Do not consider every other crush of yours, a twinflame or a soulmate. Give yourself and them a while, don't categorize love or attraction until you both are really close and in a relationship of some kind.

Mindlessly scrolling into 50-60 pacs a day is also a big NO!

interception: I'm getting the energy of the film "warrior" with tom hardy in where he plays a character named tommy who ends up having to fight his brother for a large reward in a wrestling championship. He was a marine in the military and has childhood trauma that shapes the way he presents himself to others and navigates in his interpersonal relationships and of course what his goals and purpose are in the film, I'm not going to spoil it for you but if this is your pile, I recommend you watch it. it's on Netflix. it also really does a good job of highlighting an aspect of ourselves that we carry in our spirits to marry ourselves to our trauma or particular factors of it to hide from troubling or conflicting emotions or circumstances. things that are "inherently" bad or negative in theory but can look "desirable" or "acceptable" to us because our motivation for accepting it happens to be a heavily skewed one.

𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝑀𝑎𝑗𝑜𝑟 𝐴𝑟𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑎

So, I’ve done a post about why I add a character’s moral alignment, so I thought I would do it for the Tarot cards. Maybe you’ve noticed it or not (it is something I’ve only started doing). 

Because there are 4 suits; Cups (Water), Wands (Fire), Swords (Air) & Pentacles (Earth). I decided this first post will be about the Major Arcana, to break up the Tarot - so it’s easier to digest, rather than have everything thrown at you.

Okay, so the Major Arcana is about a person going through different stages in their life. Starting off with The Fool - who is a curious innocent who wants to experience the world, to the end, ‘The World,’ meaning you’ve accomplished what was set before you.

Each zodiac sign has their own tarot card that represents them. Here’s a free website that tells you. I’ll provide the sun signs equivalent to their tarot card. Although you have your own personal one!

I’ll make another post on how to read tarot cards, because there’s a lot that goes into it. But with the Major Arcana, their messages are much clearer (inn my experience) then the Minor Arcana (the suits; cups, wands, swords, pentacles). 

Also, when I read tarot, I include when a card comes out upside down. You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. Do what feels right, it may seem silly or overstated, but your intuition is a superpower. Feel it in your gut. Listen to yourself. 

These cards will represent the deeper, more life-impacting matters. The Major arcana deal with the major moments in our lives. 

𝟎. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐥

This is a card of rebirth. It signifies new opportunities. Telling us that it’s never too late to start fresh and follow your heart’s desire. 

Zodiac Card: All signs

Keywords: Beginnings, Risks. 

Element: Air

Planet: Uranus

Upright: New beginnings, adventure ahead, innocence, a thirst for life, enthusiasm. Someone who lights up a room. Taking that leap of faith, starting something new, optimism, openness to the unknown, a free spirit. 

Reversed: Recklessness, risk, naievity, holding yourself back, stupidity, negligence. 

Yes/No: Yes (although usually when a card is in reversed, it means the opposite. Again, you don’t have to take into account when the card is upside down. It’s completely fine to read them as if they were upright)

Advice: Don’t be afraid to take chances, and go on new adventures. However, think before making too big of a leap. Change is inevitable, embrace it rather than fight it. You never know what could happen next.

The Magician represents creation and manifestation. This card is the inventor, the self-employed, the entrepreneur. It reminds us to step into our power.

Planet: Mercury

Upright: Power, skill, manifestation, resourcefullness, inspired action, concentration, desire, creation. 

Reversed: Trickery, deception, manipulation, poor planning, untapped talents, someone who doesn’t believe in themselves.

Advice: This card encourages you to set your intention; in life, in your work, your family, your relationships etc. Don’t be flaky, or indecisive. Decide what you want and bloody go for it.

Simply, this card represent the subconscious mind. It’s all about inner wisdom, what we’ve learnt - both the good and the bad. And how we can combine that with our intuition and knowledge to move forward.

Upright: Intuition, sacred knowledge, divine feminine, the subconscious mind, mystery.

Advice: This card calls on you to tap into your feminine side; think of creativity, elegance, sensuality, fertility, and nurturing. Be kind to yourself. Search for the beauty in all things.

This card represents responsibility, intimate power, authority, a bringer of balance. It could be about a man, or your masculine side. It’s a return to order. A reminder to trust yourself.

Upright: Authority, estbalishedment, structure, father figure, rise to power, stable future, ambition. 

Reversed: Domination, excessive control, lack of discipline, inflexibility, patriarchal society, power struggles, cannot help yourself.

Advice: Even though a ruler has a throne, a crown, and power; they still serve.

This card represents an authority figure between the material and spirit. Someone who guides, and teaches. This card shows support, self-realisation, and expansion. Additionally, the Hierophant represents insitiutions, and traditional values.

Advice: Do not fear, your justice will come. If you have wronged someone, it’s best to take accountability and learn from your mistakes.

This card represents a pause, inner reflection and patience. The obvious meaning is ... hanging around - that events aren’t moving forward and all you can do is wait. It can also mean you’ve made sacrifices and are waiting to see the rewards.

Keywords: Waiting, Sacrifice. 

Element: Water

Planet: Neptune

Upright: Restriction, letting go, sacrifice, paise, new perspective, playing “the waiting game.” forced to be still, cannot bloom all the time. 

Reversed: Martyrdom, indecision, delay, closed off, stuck in your mindset, not seeing the bigger picture. 

Yes/No: Maybe

Advice: Your project needs time to evolve. 

Quote: “Surrender.” / “Change your perspective.”

This card represents the natural cycles of life. Death brings endings and beginnings - sometimes all at once. This card is a time of quick and deep transformation. An opportunity to let go of what is no longer serving you.

Upright: Ending of a cycle, transitions, powerful movement, transformation, endings, beginnings, sudden unexpected ‘death�� is not the end.

So I think there's a tendency to overcomplicate signifiers. It can be as simple as shuffling the deck and picking one. You can work with it for life or for a single reading. You can have one or a few. The point is just to have an anchor for the relational nature of the rest of the reading.

There are three main ways I pick signifiers; randomly, through patterns, and formulaic.

Randomly is straight-forward. I've felt some sort of shift in the way I'm showing up so I pull a card to represent that shift. You could also draw three and pick the one that resonates most.

Patterns are pretty straightforward. If you do enough readings regularly enough, you'll start to see which cards show up for you a lot of the time. The signifier I've used the longest came about this way.

Formulaic is maybe less straightforward. That's things like birth cards, astrologically related cards, and cards associated with the place you live/were born. They're pretty easy to google.

I don't personally like to just pick one because I think that bring a level of egotism to a reading that I don't personally want. People aren't great at getting a solid read on themselves in general so if you start with signifier that's born of over or underrating yourself - that's going to show up in the accuracy of the reading overall. Or at least when I've let others pick their signifiers in readings, that's what I've noticed.

I think the method that has the best effort to accuracy ratio is probably to figure out which court card corresponds with the decan of your ascendant, sun, and moon and then pick the one that resonates most.

I wanted to share this cause honestly there's something to be said about interpreting the cards WITH the question. The question is just as important as the answer. And I also just love when my synesthesia shines through in readings with that unpleasant sound associated with the 3 of pentacles.
