Hey! I just discovered your blog and I was wondering if you'd be okay doing a Lance tucker x reader where they get in an argument but it has a fluffy ending where they're closer than they were before? Maybe they confess their feelings to each other? I totally understand if you're not able or comfortable to write this.
Merry Christmas! 🎄🤶🎅🌲🎁
Authors Notes: Hey! I hope this is something similar to what you were looking for. They’re expressing their feelings in some way, just maybe not the way you’d think. I hope you like it!
Lance Tucker x Reader
Warnings: Arguing, swearing, insinuation of possible cheating, and some downright shitty friends.

_______________________________________________
It was New Year’s Eve. The year had been stressful to say the least but even worse, Lance’s buddies were coming over for a party. It’s not that you didn’t like his friends. Well, it was that. You didn’t like them. Ever since you and Lance got together three years ago, they have done nothing but try to convince him to date hotter women. “Date” being a loose term.
Overheard conversations during football games and dart/pool games and the basement went something like this.
“Oh, come on Lance you saw the chicks you used to pull. They were smokin’. Why don’t you just live again? Or better yet, you don’t even have to break up with her! Just, you know, tell her you got competitions and when she doesn’t suspect it, book a couple hotel rooms. What’s the harm?”
“Lance, buddy, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you don’t exactly have a trophy wife. Aren’t you the one with the gold medal? Shouldn’t you be looking for a gold medal wife instead of a bronze one?”
“I like her Lance, I really do, but remember that Victoria’s Secret model you hooked up with regularly like 5 years ago? What was her name... uh... Serenity! Yeah, why don’t you give her a call. You guys seemed to really click.”
The worst part of it all was they never really got to know you. They brushed past you while you cooked some food for them in the kitchen. You and Lance took turns cooking but somehow you always found that you were cooking when his friends were coming over. You had never really put much thought into it, until tonight.
“Honey! I’m home from the gym!”
You were making taco dip, guacamole, homemade Mac and cheese, and Buffalo chicken dip for the big party. You ordered pizzas, subs, and other sides to top it off. You never knew how much 8 men could eat, until you started cooking for 8 men.
Lance came up behind you and gave you a sweet kiss on the cheek as he wrapped his arms around your waist. “How’s my pretty girl doing?”
“Fine, I guess.”
You both knew you weren’t fine.
Lance sighs loudly. “Angel, what is wrong? You know I just want to help you.”
“We can talk about it later. Right now, I just want to get in my cooking zone and not think about anything.”
Lance puts his hands on his hips and stares at you authoritatively.
“Well, I’m gonna go quick grab a shower and come back down to help you finish cooking before the boys come.”
“Sounds good” you said with a half-smile. You were dreading tonight.
_______________________________________________
True to his word, Lance came down and helped you finish cooking the rest of the food. It remained quiet for most of the time you spent together. Lance could feel the tension in the air but didn’t want to ask again if anything was wrong before the party. It was New Year’s Eve, he was supposed to be celebrating with his friends, not trying to start a fight with you.
You were infuriated Lance didn’t bother to ask you why you were so upset. You always felt second to his friends, why is that? The first year you were dating it wasn’t like that. You were the center of attention in all regards, you didn’t want to be, but he treated you like the only girl in the world. Now?
“Hey babe I’m going out with the guys I’ll see you tomorrow.” You knew full well he would drunkenly slip under the covers at 3AM. Why was he out so late? What was he doing?
“Sweetheart the guys are coming over to play pool do you mind ordering us some pizzas?” Why couldn’t he do it himself?
You really did not mind that Lance had friends. You encouraged him to hang out with them even though they said horrible things about you, but enough was enough. There’s hanging out with your friends, and there’s being with your friends 24/7, leaving your girlfriend to stay home and watch movies by herself.
After you finished cooking you went upstairs to the bedroom to watch a movie. By yourself.
Surprise, surprise.
You heard the front door open for the first time tonight. You wondered if any of the guys would bring over their girlfriends or “hot dates.” You didn’t know if that would relieve your stress or infuriate you even more. If they did bring someone, they wouldn’t be so focused on it being a “boys’ night.” However, if they did bring someone, why couldn’t you come downstairs to hang out with them?
You heard a slap of hands exchanged and what you assumed to be a half hug after it.
The men continued to pile in around 8PM. Some of them brought a date, but others didn’t. However, you noticed one of the guys brought two girls. Why would he do that?
You decided to put on some nice clothes to go downstairs. Other men were bringing their dates, and this was your house. You deserve to celebrate too.
You worked your way down to the basement, wanting to spend time with your definitely above average looking boyfriend. You were so happy to call him yours, even though he frustrated you to no end sometimes. From what you overhear, he never sticks up for you.
You strutted over him and placed your hand on his back gently. He quickly turns around, angry almost and begins to say something “I told you I don’t want.... oh, hi baby.”
You looked at him confused. What was that about?
“Hi... what’s uh, what’s going on?”
“Oh nothin’. Just Evan and I got into it earlier about something and I thought he was coming to bother me about it again. But then I turn around to see your pretty face and that doesn’t even matter.”
He brings you in for a tight hug and rests his chin on your head. You loved him. You loved him so much.
Out of nowhere Evan comes up behind you, noticeably drunk, the scent of liquor oozing off of him. There’s a girl attached to his right arm. She’s tall, slender, and blonde. You thought she was too attractive for Evan, until he started to speak.
“Lance, meet my girl Lindsay here. She’s really interested in you and wants to talk to you about your gold medal.”
You can’t say this never happened. You were used to women throwing themselves at Lance. You were always so proud to call Lance yours, but other women wanted that opportunity as well. It got so bad to the point where women would send random lewd photos to his work email to gain his attention. It never worked thank god. Every time you saw pictures like that you got suspicious, but every message read “don’t you want to see what you’re missing out on?” or something to that degree. Lance was always patient and kind with you about it, knowing you were easily frustrated and cautious of him because you knew what he was like before. However, you knew he wouldn’t cheat on you, and he always has an explanation if he thought you were ever worried.
“Excuse me?” You said looking at Evan.
“Come on Y/N. Let the man have a little fun.” Evan retorted.
“This isn’t letting him have ‘a little fun.’ Letting him have ‘a little fun’ is hosting this party, not you trying to actively encourage him to cheat on me, right in front of me no less.”
Lindsay sneers at you. “Who are you? Get in line sister. Evan told me I would get to talk to him.”
You raise your eyebrows in disbelief.
“I don’t know if I have to spell it out for you, if you can even spell, but I’m his girlfriend.”
“Y/N come on baby it’s not that big of a deal. She just wants to talk to me about my gold medal that’s all.”
“The gold medal you won in the Olympics or the one tattooed around your dick Lance?”
“I’ll only talk to her about the one I won in the Olympics and you know that.”
You had had it. You were so incredibly tired of Lance never sticking up for you when it came to situations like this. You never threw a fit when his friends would make stupid remarks, but this was the last straw.
“I don’t care anymore Lance! Talk to her about your dick tattoo. Hell, let her even see your dick tattoo close up while she’s sucking you off. I’m done.”
Without giving him a second glance. you turned on your heel and walked upstairs to grab your car keys.
Lance sprinted up the stairs after you, shouting your name. You didn’t care. You ran to the garage and hit the button to open the door. Lance thought you went to your room, so he sprinted to the third floor thinking you were there. He finally realized you were actually leaving when he heard the start of your car. He saw you back out of the driveway like a bat out of hell, and all he could do was watch from the window.
_______________________________________________
You drove to the nearest diner, hoping they would be open even though it was New Year’s Eve. Thankfully, they were. You always comforted yourself with food when shit like this happened. Who doesn’t love food? You can’t say that entirely though. You also tended to starve yourself in situations like this as well. Neither coping mechanism was healthy, but it got you through it.
You ordered a breakfast meal, quickly glancing at your phone to see if anyone had texted you.
24 missed calls from Lance❤️🥇
You knew he was worried about you, but you weren’t ready to call him back yet. You knew he couldn’t come searching for you either, all of his friends still being inside, waiting for the ball to drop. This was going to be the first year you and Lance wouldn’t kiss at midnight, all because of his stupid friends who hate you for no reason.
You ate your meal as you saw Ryan Seacrest introduce one artist after another on the television.
The clock was nearing midnight. You didn’t seem to care. You contemplated going to your friend’s house, knowing they would gladly accept you and support you, especially when they knew how much of an ass Lance’s friends could be. You decided against it, not wanting to bother anyone.
You glanced at your phone again.
28 missed calls from Lance❤️🥇
Not only that, but it had looked like he texted you as well.
“Where are you going???”
“Y/N???”
“Baby come back here please I’m very upset and I want to talk”
“Baby please come back and talk to me.”
And about 15 other messages similar to those.
You were heartbroken. You wanted to go home, but you knew you needed to stand your ground.
As the many thousands of people in NYC count down to the New Year you sat and ate your bacon and pancakes.
Lance saw all of his buddies laughing and having a good time. He couldn’t have a good time until he knew you were safe and that he would have everything fixed. He knew he fucked up big time, but he thought you were overreacting to the extreme. Was it really that bad you needed to leave right away?
His annoyance throughout the night grew as Lindsay began to pester him about his interests.
“Lindsay, I don’t know how to tell you this in a nice way, so I won’t. I have a girlfriend. She’s the sexiest, smartest, and sweetest woman on this planet, and that’s all that matters to me. Now please, go bother Johnny or somethin’.”
Lindsay didn’t like that. So much so, she dumped her whole glass of whiskey on his brand-new Nike shoes. He didn’t care she was upset. All he cared about was you.
Evan came back up to Lance for the last time of the night.
“Heyyuh pal. I didn’t mean to make your lady run out on ya.”
“But you did Evan. You fucking idiot, you stupid fucking fucker. You ruined this night for not only me, but my girl who is probably out sobbing to her friends about how much of a shit boyfriend I am. And you know what? I don’t blame her. I deserve it.”
“C’mon man don’t be so *burp* hard on yourself. Hey, at least you can go have fun with Lindsay eh?” He says while wiggling his eyebrows.
Lance was fuming. “Evan if you don’t get the fuck out of my face, I’m going to floor you in about 6 seconds.”
Evan held up his hands and backed away, finally getting the hint he was becoming a nuisance to not only Lance, but the party itself.
He listened to all of his friends count down to the new year in a drunken haze. He slouched over the home bar, drinking himself into a stupor with his seventh gin and tonic. He didn’t care about any of the calories he was consuming. He didn’t care about anything. He knew he wouldn’t have his Angel to hold and kiss into the new year. He wanted nothing more for this night to just end.
_______________________________________________
You snuck back into the house around 4AM, hoping Lance wasn’t awake. You drove around for hours after the ball dropped, the diner closing at 1AM anyways. You listened to 80’s music, calming yourself down. Music always helped you meditate.
As you slowly closed the door you saw Lance sitting miserably in his recliner. He was no longer drunk. Just incredibly depressed.
He turned to look at the door, hoping that the door opening and closing wasn’t just some sleep induced hallucination. As soon as he realized it was you, he jolted up and ran to give you a hug. You stuck your arm out before he could reach you.
He looked devastated.
“I want to talk Lance. I-”
“No, no I fucked up. Let me do this. I have been shit. I have been absolute and utter fucking garbage to you when it comes to my friends. I let them talk to me like I’m still a bachelor. I know you overhear the things they say, and it hurts you. And I let them do that. I don’t know why. I have no reason. It was so fucking stupid of me. You have to know I don’t want any other woman on this planet. You’re my day and my night. I would be lost in this depressing ass place of a world if it wasn’t for you my sweet Angel. My beacon of light.” He stopped his rant briefly to cup your face and stare into your eyes lovingly.
“It all stops here. No more stupid guy shit. You’re my number one and you deserve to be treated that way. If any of my friends continues to disrespect my baby, they’re out. I don’t care who they are and how long they’ve been around. You’re my baby. You’re the only thing that matters.
It felt like a weight had just been lifted off of your chest. You loved him. You really did.
He pulled you in for the tightest hug that he could have possibly ever given. He kisses the top of your forehead for what seems like a hundred times.
You look up to him while he’s still embracing you.
“I like Johnny. Johnny can stay.” You say with a smile.
“Keeping Storm it is, got it.” He returned with a smile.
A lightbulb goes on in Lance’s head. “Oh! Come here, come here, come here. I saved this for you.”
You follow him into the living room, your hand wrapped in his. He flicks through the TV menu, clicking to find the recording from earlier.
It was the ball drop.
“I recorded this for us. I didn’t want to miss kissing my baby into the new year.” He said with a smile.
“Lance Tucker, you are the sweetest man alive, do you know that?”
“C’mon, you know I’m still an asshole. I just have my moments.” He says with an eyeroll.
You slapped his chest playfully as you both slightly laughed.
As the seconds ticked down to midnight for the second time of the night, Lance stared into your eyes with the most love you have ever felt from a person.
“10!”
“Where did you even go anyways?”
“9!”
“Our spot.”
“8!”
I’m gonna take you on the best date there ever was. Just you wait.”
“7!”
“I’ll be counting on that Tucker. A promise is a promise.”
“6!”
“I’m really good at keeping promises.”
“5!”
“Oh really? Just like that time you promised to give me a castle made out of gold?”
“4!”
“You’re still getting that y’know.”
“3!”
“What other promises have you kept huh?”
“2!”
“I promised to love you forever. And I always will.”
“1!”
“I love you too, Lance.”
“HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
He kissed you with a ferocity you didn’t know existed. He took your bottom lip into his mouth and held it there for what seemed like forever. Forever was okay though, as long as you were with him.
Lance finally broke the kiss, pulling away softly and cupping your face in his left hand. He whispered.
“Check your cardigan pocket.”
You looked confused. He knew you would be. You felt a tiny box in you right hand pocket. It was covered in felt. You slowly pulled it out to see that it was a ring box. You opened it and it had a ring pop inside.
“Ha-ha. Very funny Tuc-”
You looked down to see Lance on one knee. Holding the most beautiful ring you had ever seen in your life.
“I’m going to love you forever, Y/N. Will you marry me?”
You were stunned.
“...Yes.... oh my god, YES!”
He smiled, standing up and wrapping his arms around you as fast as he could.
“I’ll love you forever too, Lance.”

Here again for the @toa-secret-santa of this year! So happy to participate again, I love these events! 😍😍 Hello @spellcasterdouxie, I’m your secret santa! Merry Christmas and festivities, hope you like my present! ❤
Summary: In which being stuck in New York to protect a magical being and save the world in the process is no excuse for not celebrating Christmas with your friends.
Also on AO3
So… Nari was a terrible liar.
Extremely powerful being, the purest pretty soul, but horrible at lying.
Douxie didn’t have the slightest idea of what she was plotting, granted that she used to be part of an evil congregation of wizards that wanted to take over using an ancient artifact – meh, like that was the weirdest coming from his friends –, but he was fairly sure that her claim regarding the leaking sink of the bathroom was some sort of decoy.
Did that convince him to ignore those big adorable puppy eyes?
“It looks good to me, but I’m gonna give it a double check just in case!”
“Thank you Douxie, much appreciated! Please make sure everything is working, do not overlook a single thing!” Absolutely not. He was a master wizard, not a beast.
Their little apartment was neither pretty nor particularly clean. Which considering the little money he accumulated over the years with all of his jobs back in Arcadia and given the fact that they were in New York City, was kind of a given. But it had a perfectly functional bathroom, basically a gift from above, or some kind of karma retribution from putting up with three different apocalypses in the same summer – and he had all suspicions that another one was coming, but possibly another season. That being said, he wasn’t sure why with her plant like appearance, Nari with all people was so interested into their sink. Besides maybe for spraying a bit of water over her head – one very curious and endearing scene really, like a pot plant watering itself.
Then again, he wasn’t completely sure why he was going along with it instead of asking directly what was this all about. Maybe he liked to study whatever thought somehow as peculiar as her could come up with. Maybe there was nothing else of particular interest to do while waiting for his mac and cheese to be ready… maybe that little nightmare of his from last night got him a little too down, and doing anything but think about it was a better solution than most. And it was a pretty annoying maybe, because dreams about his master were as common as breathing lately.
He thought he was over it. It was probably too soon… hopefully he was at least getting closer to the not too soon part of it.
One long silence followed, from which he was fairly sure he had heard a few whispers a little lower than Nari’s light tone. Great, what now? Was she actually plotting something?
“Is everything okay over there? Arch? Nari?”
“Fine, everything is fine! Keep checking please!”
“Are you serious?” Okay now it was ridiculous. “Nope, I’m getting over there, and you two better not be up to no good!” They were a surprisingly compatible pair, especially since his familiar had made it his mission to teach her the marvel of pranks – she wasn’t even malicious about it, that made it all even more devious somehow. Douxie left the wrench on the ground, getting out of the bathroom and towards the living room. “You all keep forgetting that I’m the master wizards here, so technically I’m in charge, so if you’re scheming something- Whoa, Mordrax’s miracles!”
The last thing he had expected, after leaving their lonely living room that was made of four faded walls with a random kitchen connected to it, was to get back to it completely transformed into a messy, happy Christmas themed little chamber.
Filled with very familiar faces.
“Merry Christmas, Teach!” Claire almost knocked him off his feet with that hug. She looked radiant, all wrapped up in one big purple sweater with ‘Feeling Wicked Sassy’ written on it – appropriate. Behind her Steve, Toby and Archie were all smiling.
“Sorry, you would not leave the house,” Nari looked all cozy and a little guilty in that big mint green sweater – with ‘Every Day is Green Day’ written on it, where did she get that? –, waving at him. “And it felt like claiming we were being attacked by Skrael and Bellroc was a bit excessive.” Thank goodness his roommate and protegee had some common sense – considering his latest adventure, more than him for sure.
Claire giggled, shrugging innocently.
“We honestly hoped you were that bad of a plumber and would give us more time…”
Douxie snickered, because this was ridiculously endearing and he loved it all already.
“Too bad I’m not completely hopeless.”
“Could’ve fooled me!” Steve, it was Steve, not even worth turning around to recognize him. But a random fist bump, that much he could concede – especially with that massive blue sweater ‘Silent Knight, Holey Knight’ he had on, like really what was even that. “Ready to have the best time of your life?”
The master wizard arched an eyebrow.
“Said from you? Should we call the firefighter in advance? Or the police?” The blonde pouted very dramatically, Claire snickered. He had really missed these two. “Wow, this place looks amazing! The landlord can’t see this or she will force me to pay more for the rent.” His wallet was already gasping enough for breath and money. “All this stuff, all the decorations… is this beef?” Ah, that was why it all felt like such a sudden change, this paradisiac scent had definitely not been here before. “It smells delicious!”
“Thank you!” Second shock of the day, but Douxie could hardly blame himself considering the most time he had spent around Jim had been during his huge troll moments – he kinda looked like a twig now in comparison. “I’m pretty well known for my festive feasts.”
“Also known as festeasts!” Toby showed one enthusiastic victory sign, pulling off his orange ‘Rockin’ This Christmas’ with plenty of little gems and stones all around – the forever geologist.
Jim rolled his eyes with a grin.
“Tobes we’re not calling them that.” The Warhammer holder frowned, only to beam when he got handed a spoon for a taste. “I made most of this from home so it’s all ready and warm, but I wanted to make something on the place while I was at it. Freshly made food tastes way better on Christmas.” Toby hummed around the spoon, smacking his lips, then he rubbed his fingers together towards the chef, who caught it as to add more salt.
Douxie couldn’t help but scoot closer, peaking inside. That looked like food. That looked like real, delicious, extremely well-made food.
“What in the world, how did you make that?” Jim snorted.
“You moved on without much of a comment from me turning into a half-troll, a full troll and then back to a human, and this surprises you?”
“My friend, there were Thai leftovers, one instant ramen, an onion and an egg left in the fridge so yes, this surprises me!” All speculations died when he was offered a taste too. “… so it turns out I know nothing of magic. I must bow to the real master wizard here.” If happiness had a flavor it had to be this one. The former trollhunter snickered, giving him a little elbow before going back over his creations. And if the most classic ‘kiss the chef’ apron on him wasn’t already extremely fitting, the cyan sweater underneath reciting ‘I’m In The…’ on the back barely left to the imagination what list was written on the front.
A very well-deserved sign, really.
“Buttsnack’s managed to make these too, take a look!” Steve waved at the little counter that was the only thing remotely looking like a table in this place. And smelling just as heavenly as everything else, there they were, mince pies, just like the ones from Camelot. “But I don’t know if they’re as good because someone slaps my hand every time I- OUCH!! I didn’t even try this time!”
Archie’s tail could be surprisingly useful as a whip, in fact.
“You were thinking about it! So don’t, these are for later.” And wow, if his most loyal companion wasn’t absolutely adorable wearing that little red sweater – ‘Santa Paws’, he was going to complain about it all day long. Douxie wished he hadn’t left his phone in the bathroom. “We’re still waiting for the tree, the last decorations and the music. But we’re almost ready.” So apparently his familiar had been behind all of this. That actually made perfect sense.
Of course this little wizard associate had known this was going to do him good. It was the kind of bond that came with being around each other for over 900 years.
Archie smiled at him, and Douxie couldn’t not grin in return.
“Can’t wait for them! Even thought I did have some when we had that travel… well technically ages ago, we were actually in Camelot, but it wasn’t- Ah forget it, time loops are too confusing.” There was a consensual groan including all of them but Toby and Nari, who just looked at each other and shrugged. “Well, this is awesome, how did you even get everything here so fast?” On second thought, that was more than just bizarre. His eyes crossed Claire’s right away. “You get so tired with transportations through the Shadow Realm usually, and you got to bring along all of these people and decorations?” The thing was, this wasn’t supposed to be possible. Another thing was, Lady Claire of house Nunez was so insanely talented it would had not surprised him.
The girl waved her hand in denial.
“I wish I was at that level, but no. Still, we did travel back and forth pretty quickly.”
“Without magic? How?”
“I should take offense from that highly questioning tone.” Third shock, his poor heart – he came back from the grave once, and he really didn’t recommend it. He was fairly sure the apartment he had rented didn’t include interdimensional portals opening in the middle of the living room. “And from the fact that you humans keep forgetting I invented a perfectly functioning wormhole generator. But please, continue with your predicaments, ignore the scientific feat I’ve accomplished!” For an alien that barely understood human sarcasm, Krel Tarron was made a whole half of it.
As he walked in from the portal, holding one edge of a box filled with Christmas balls, on the other side Zoe stepped in carrying along the rest. And between a black ‘I’m Back, Witches’ sweater and a gray ‘DJ Kleb’ one with four sleeves, it was one curious and fantastic view.
“Yeah yeah, you bent the rules of physics, congratulations!” Zoe’s tense tone implied that she must had heard that complain already. “Stop talking and get working, I’m going the extra mile here!”
“This doesn’t sound like a good time to have a walk.”
“For the love of…!” The pink haired girl let out a muffled scream, let go of her edge of the box – lucky for Krel to have four arms to catch it – and jumped over the master wizard to grab his shoulders. “I hate you so much, you left me alone dealing with all of these new knuckleheads! Like the local dummies weren’t enough!” The collective offended ‘Hey!’ coming from both the Akiridion and the village’s idiot – a marvel that Steve actually responded, fully aware of his status as knucklehead – was somehow even more endearing than funny.
Meanwhile Zoe was still wrinkling his favorite jacket, frowning aggressively at him like the fact that he was out there saving the world was unforgivable – you could say anything about this pink head, but not that she didn’t have priorities.
Douxie snickered, easing the hold onto him.
“Sorry for trying to give my friends a place to live in this crazy wild world, then!”
“… apologies accepted.” Zoe narrowed her eyes. “But only if we finally hunt for niffins and get those forsaken burgers after you did the deed. I’m calling dibs on you.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Besides, you owe me. I didn’t snitch and told that Hex Tech got annihilated and we’re in need of new personnel because someone needed to hide from the big bad villains.” Those blue gems were screaming not to mess this offer up, because it was certainly not going to come back.
Even with a pressure like that, in some way inside of him, Douxie felt freed of a little weight. Despite the distance and everything that had happened, some things stayed the same. So he quite happily held up his fist, smirking at the girl.
“Alright, as soon as this is over with. Deal.” Zoe glared at him a few more seconds. Then she nodded, and finally bumped their knuckles together.
With a thud Krel finally put the box down, sighing soundly.
“Thanks Seklos this is done. I believe we are only missing the dead tree that will be then covered in artificial garnishments as a form of apparent belittlement of nature.” He stayed still for a few seconds, mindlessly throwing a little sphere on the ground that divided in four pieces, generating a portal. “… I feel like I’m getting so accustomed with humans’ savageness that I’m even quite looking forwards to it. Especially for that useless invention called ‘tree’.” He snickered, getting inside the wormhole that disappeared as soon as he was in.
Luckily the impossible dimensional gateway appeared of not leaving any trace behind. And luckily the creature – or elf, demigod, Nari was still a bit of a mystery – most connected to the nature that had just been denigrated was way more interested in whatever chef wiz Jim Lake Jr. was preparing.
“You knubhead, I just told you not to!” Archie’s spiteful voice came along, as apparently Steve had managed to take advantage of the situation – a scientific miracle happening in front of them, fair enough – to finally get himself a mince piece. Only to get slapped to the ground.  “That’s it, until these cool down you’re getting nowhere near! Douxie, out with me, we need to guard the treasure!” That was some attachment for one tray of soft and delicious little pastries.
Douxie shrugged and complied, picking up the meal under the jock’s renovated pout and heading to the balcony. The chilling air got to his nose right away, but he endured, appreciating just the tiniest breath. There was barely space for once person there.
Well, one person and his familiar. He placed the tray on the railing, making sure it didn’t fall.
“How did Jim even get the recipe?” Archie grinned.
“Well, apparently his troll friends did remember a certain meal very appreciated by humans from back then, but they have their own idea on how to make it. I don’t know the details, but I certainly know it involves socks. Plenty of socks.”
“… you want to see Steve’s reaction to them later.”
“I want to see Steve’s reaction to them later with all the others. Christmas is supposed to be a family festivity, right?” His grin disappeared right after. “So… it didn’t sound like you were sleeping too well last night.” Yep. He knew. Of course he knew. He would had even if he didn’t have to habit of sneaking into his bed to get warm. “Something you’d like to talk about?”
Douxie breathed out, gently buffing his fluffy ear.
“I’m fine Arch, not need to get all sensible on me. It was one of the usuals.” He tried a weak smile, not really feeling like keeping everything in. Not with so many people inside, on this particular day. “… you know, thinking it now, somehow it was easier celebrating Christmas on the streets back in Camelot. Getting something good to eat, have fun, that was enough. Considering how tense was everyone in the Pendragon castle it’s not much of a surprise, but still… I wonder if Merlin ever had a proper Christmas in there.” He sighed. “He certainly didn’t while I was around.” The noisy streets of Camelot overlapped NYC’s busy ones. He swallowed a lump into his throat.
That legendary town was such a faraway place right now, coming back from a single memory was a slap from reality. Douxie shivered, taking in a freezing breath, gasping when Archie jumped over his shoulder and curled all around his neck. His fur was nice and warm.
“We have no way of knowing. But one thing’s for sure, that old man got a surprising, unexpected present in any case.” Archie smiled, eyeing him softly. “One very sneaky, very foolish, very brave apprentice.” They had been there, the both of them. And in any possible way, in the good, the bad, and the best, he had found a life to call that way. The one Merlin had asked him about.
The master wizard smiled, snuggling his cheek against his loyal friend.
It didn’t take long, the winter air acted like a freezer over the little pies. But as they went back in, the place had already changed – and that was besides AAARRRGGHH!!, with one gigantic hat on his head, holding up the tree while Blinky, wearing a scarf, was reading a manual on how to decorate it, where did he even get that? –: there was a table, appeared again out of nowhere, with all the most delicious looking dishes placed all over between branches of holly and little bells. Jim and Nari were putting down the last dishes, Steve was clumsily getting the statue of a reindeer to balance over the tv, Toby was checking the lights to make sure they were functioning.
And Claire was suddenly in front of him, beaming, clearly hiding something from behind her back. It immediately grabbed everybody’s attention, like it was some sort of event.
Was it?
“We’ve organized the present exchange for after lunch, but this one you need to put it on now. So, her it is!” She uncovered the secret and- Oh. It was a sweater. It was a sweater. For him. “There you go, you’re officially part of the wool club, a Christmas-limited association only.”
“Founder of the association Nancy Domzalski, mostly because it was Nana who made them all!” Toby caressed the front of his sweater, smiling softly. “She’s that kind of grandma that thinks that everything that’s made with love can bring warmth, and I’m kind of a believer too.” He shrugged, crossing his fingers behind the back of his head. “I know this isn’t your cool punk rock wizardy style, but Nana had her midlife crisis in her own time and I’m not exactly looking forward to one before my very own eyes!” That was probably not a sight a grandchild wanted of their grandma, that was understandable.
It was. It was, right? It was getting a little hard to focus on something, anything that wasn’t a soft bundle of black and navy blue stripes, welcoming and warm, with ‘Fuzzbuckets’ written on it. It was getting weird. A little unsettling even, because he just got out in the cold but his bones weren’t freezing anymore and he felt all fuzzy inside and now his eyes were warm and-
“… oh, curse me, not the waterfalls…!” Centuries spent transitioning from hopeless bard to punk rock guitarist, only to tear up at a random surprise Christmas party.
From there, he didn’t understand much. Only Claire’s probable ‘Aww Douxie!’, Toby’s sudden ‘There’s no Christmas without the sad moment’, Steve’s surprising ‘I know what to do, come on everybody, let’s all hug it out!’. And all of the sudden he was enveloped with so many arms, so many different people he had gotten to know and had managed to befriend and appreciate. That were part of his world, his life, and what was coming for the future.
So when he managed to open his eyes, there was so much to uncover, between a pink head, a scarred eyebrow, a lock of leaves and a paw still so close to his cheek. And it hit him that perhaps there was a reason why Camelot had always felt so far away lately.
That age was over. But this, it felt like it had only begun. Douxie smiled, closing his eyes again.
Embracing how good it felt to belong again.

Fallout Secret Santa
Dear @bagheera-is-back,  this year has been quiet different from what everybody had in mind. But we all found a way to get through it. I hope you got through it well and that you took the last few weeks in stride. I also hope your family is fine as well and you had good and merry holidays. I am your gift giver for the Fallout Secret Santa and wrote you two little stories to hopefully make you smile. I wish you a very happy 2021
MacCready: She loves to sing. Sometimes to external music, sometimes to music in her head. It doesn’t matter because she can’t sing in tune for the life of her. The only partial saving grace was maturity, which helped lower her voice so at least it was decently pleasant off-tune and not an ear drum rupturing kid screech. The day her son was born was probably one of the happiest days of her life. She sang to him in the womb and she would continue to sing to him, till he gets old enough to roll his eyes and groan at her. Thinking about it, even that wouldn’t stop her. And then – the bombs dropped. Her family got stored away in freezing pots and on top of all that she had to watch her husband get killed and her son getting taken away. The next she remembers is waking up in freezing cold and seeing all her neighbor’s dead – frozen in time.
That’s the day she stops singing.
She finds Codsworth and is more than happy to have a familiar face around. Preston becomes her right-hand man, and the Minuteman are getting stronger and stronger with every passing day. After weeks of repairing settlements and fortifying them up she finally has time to think about how she’s going to find Virgil. She can’t ask the brotherhood, plainly put because they’re pricks. She would ask Mick, but if she’s being honest, she’s a little worried about his circuits and she doesn’t want to risk anything with one of her closest friends. She can’t take Hancock because he was already too long gone from Goodneighbor. As much as she loves Curie, she probably isn’t ready for the whole Wasteland yet. Her thoughts drift from one friend to another till they finally stop at the one person she already worked with but isn’t sure if he even counts as a friend. Robert Macready. The man who doesn’t share but is a hell of a good shot. It could work. It has to work. Goodneighbor is the exact same as it always is when she’s visiting. He’s sitting in the same chair he already sat in as they met for the first time. “Haven’t seen you in a long time.” Of course, he would know it was her as soon as she entered. “Hey Mac”. Finally, he turns around to look at her. “What brings you into this most welcoming town this time around? Hancock got another job for you?” “Actually, I’m here to ask you something and nothing is obligating you to say yes” she looks everywhere but at him. He raises his eyebrow “Well traveling with you is fun, as long as you’re not sending me to farm, again I should be able to survive it.” A smile grows on her face “No, no farming this time. But we need to go into the glowing sea”. He nearly chokes “The *cough* the glowing sea? WHY?”. Sighing she explains everything she found out about the institute, the runaway doctor, her son, and the way to get inside the institute. He listens, but she can clearly see he can’t follow everything. She pulls out a map and shows him the exact way she wants to follow. “I’ll follow you. I will do everything in my power to help you get the information you need. But I have a request to make,” he looks up to see her already staring at him and nodding “we’ll be passing right by a building called MedTek. I want to search it for something important that I need.” She’s nodding again. What will he need from the building? Since he already turned around and grabbed his rifle, she’s guessing this conversation is over and she’ll have to wait for another moment to question him. Two days later they are on the road together. Some hours get buy without either of them uttering a word while other times they jump from topic to topic and can’t seem to stop talking. She still doesn’t know what Mac needs from MedTek but they’re nearly there, so she’ll find out. They arrive and the building looms abandoned but not completely destroyed. What they didn’t expect was the swarm of feral ghouls that awaited them after nearly every door. Finally, they arrived inside the last room. Macready has been mumbling something that sounds like please this whole time. She closes the door just incase some more ghouls decided to wake up and visit them. “Macready please. What are we looking for?” He looks over to her. “I’m sorry I guess I haven’t been very fair to you. I’m looking for a cure. A cure to a fairly unknown disease. But - - - but my son is sick. And I don’t know how long he still has. MedTek is known for the fact that they have experimented with diseases and they must have found a lot of cures.” He stares at her with a slight panic in his eyes. She nods and begins searching. They will have a of other time to talk, right now calming him down by showing him she will be at his side is more important. They find the cure. They check if the cure is actually for the disease that sounds closest to what Duncan has and they get the hell out of that building. Macready seems to not be able to actually grasps what’s happening. “What if we take a retour to Goodneighbor, send the cure off, restock, sleep and then make our way into the hell that is the glowing sea?”. He smiles and nods, that’s enough confirmation she needs.
There’s a smile on her face. She helped his son already, her son is gonna be saved soon.
On their way back to Goodneighbor, Macready cleans his throat and looks at her. “You should really sing more.” Shocked she stares at him. “You were humming and quietly singing to yourself nearly this whole time back.” She chuckles “I’m sorry, I guess this adventure reminds me of something” she just smiles at his confused face and keeps on walking.
Maybe she’ll find her voice again.
Hancock: He’s fairly sure he has never seen anything more beautiful in his life. The last few weeks went by in a haze, partially because he was busy running Goodneighbor and saving the world with the general of the minutemen herself. Maybe it also was a side effect of the jet he consumed whenever a mission went exceptionally well. After the biggest rush was over, he took up the invitation of staying in Sanctuary for a few days to lay low. He knew damn well he could take a break. It wasn’t unusual to hear sounds in the night, turrets were humming, animals making sounds, Codsworth humming through town and the occasional reparations done by Sturges or whoever is still up and can’t get some shut eye. It also wasn’t unusual that he was the one up all night because the left-over drugs were keeping his body running or just his mind doesn’t want to shut up. What was unusual though was waking up to see the whole settlement lit up by hundreds probably thousands of small little lights. He guessed it was around five or six in the morning because the sun wasn’t up yet, and he also seemed to be the only one walking around just yet. Sitting down on one of the watch towers as he liked to call them gives him a beautiful view of the whole settlement. He has never seen something more beautiful. “I didn’t expect you to be awake already”, to his right the general herself takes place. “More like, I’m still awake and decided to take a morning stroll.” He winks at her. A smile spreads on her face. “Morning stroll, of course honey.” She bumps her shoulder into his and then lays her head on his shoulder. “Guess how many lamps that are?” “Probably around 100” he says curiously and tries to count the lamps he can see. On his shoulder it feels like she’s nodding before she says, “Exactly 439, if you count the ones at the front gate too.” He nods impressed and takes another drag of his cigarette. “They’re beautiful, but I gotta ask: What did you put them up for?” She breathily laughs “It’s Christmas.” He looks at her curiously. He heard the word before, and Deacon had talked about it a few times, but he does not really have a clue what Christmas is supposed to be. She sees his curious stare “Christmas was always my favorite holiday as a child. The whole family was coming together, there was way too much food to eat, your grandparents would tell stories of their childhood and your parents would force you to learn a poem to perform in front of your family.” He chuckles “Sounds like a fun time.” She nods eagerly “Hell yes, as a child getting presents from everybody in your family was the best thing ever, but as you grow older you start to appreciate other things within Christmas time. How the lights give you warmth, the smell of your home calms you down no matter how stressful your day was and how many memories old songs could unlock.” – she sighs and cuddles closer to him – “But sadly that traditions don’t seem to have survived 200 years in the apocalypse. So, I hung up lights. Sadly, there seem to be no Christmas songs that survived. I asked Travis and Magnolia and no chance. Nothing there.” He puffs the smoke along to her telling her story and enjoys her presence. “We can write our own Christmas songs. Make them up so they fit into our time.” He smiles as she jumps up excited. “Hell yes, I’m gonna ask Piper for inspiration.” she speaks in his direction before she is already gone.
Leaning back, he relaxes, takes the last drag of his cigarette and smiles. Looking over the settlement and the fading back of the general a thought crosses his mind, maybe he has seen something this beautiful in his life already.

Roisa Secret Santa | Mac & Cheese
Prompt: Mac & Cheese, side of angst Rating: T (teen)  Word count: 2009 words
merry christmas, @only-freakin-sunflowers!!!
it’s been so much fun writing this little piece and dropping into your inbox to spread that festive cheer this winter. (im dreadful at keeping secrets when im excited about something - the amount of times i panicked that i’d sent an ask without anonymous being ticked, my god...) i really wanted to add an over the top cutesy ending to this, but when i tried to write it, it just didn’t fit with the foundations that i’d already set down, so i’m sorry if you’re expecting that! i hope this story does your prompt justice, and thank you for all the lovely replies to my asks these past few weeks!
i hope that the next few days bring you so much joy (and some freakin good food, man), and that the new year is kind to you. <3
Luisa’s gaze lingers on the view from their balcony window.
They’ve been in France for three nights, already, tucked into a snowy city with a Swiss border, and mountains that threaten the stars sitting peacefully in their back yard. Luisa feels the biting chill even in spite of her many layers, but does not make to enter the wooden chalet that Rose had secured them for the week. The glass doors behind her reveal a lamp-lit bedroom and the suitcase that they never bothered to unpack, given that they might, at any point, need to make a speedy escape.
Luisa cranes her neck to see the row of wooden buildings that line the mountain road, instead, some small and quaint, others triple-storey and magnificent, all of them like a scene from a real festive movie – the kind with snow piled up to the windows, and hot cocoa with marshmallows floating on top, and innocent mishaps that threaten to ruin Christmas for good, but never actually succeed.
It’s not Luisa’s first white Christmas, and yet the novelty has never really worn off.
Behind her, the sound of a sliding door opening and closing signals Rose’s return from the shower.
Warm arms wrap tightly around her from behind, struggling around her middle and the three separate jackets that Luisa has smuggled herself into. Rose snorts a delicate laugh when she barely manages to rest her chin on Luisa’s shoulder, the faux fur around her hood tickling her cheek. She smells like hotel shampoo and warmth, and Luisa sinks back against her with a sigh.
“Are you still brooding?” Rose asks by her ear.
Luisa considers the question before answering with a quiet, “A little.”
“What can I do to make it better?” Her gaze flicks to one side. “We can turn on the hot tub.”
“I’m not really in the mood for that. Besides, it’s freezing.”
Rose’s voice lilts, suggestive, when she offers, “I can keep you warm.”
Luisa straightens, relieving Rose of her weight, and turns around. She balks when she realises Rose is wearing nothing but a thick white bath robe and a pair of complimentary slippers, damp red hair hanging limp over one shoulder, inviting a frost. “Are you serious? Get inside right now!” Luisa’s concern for her far outweighs the lingering uneasiness that had led her out onto the balcony, where she’d hoped the frigid air would cool her temper. “You’re going to catch your death.”
Rose stops Luisa from man-handling her inside with gentle but firm hands on her biceps.
“Wait. Talk to me before we go back in there. I know you’re upset, and I don’t want to bring this to dinner with us. Tell me how you’re feeling? Let me help.”
Luisa’s mouth gapes like a fish forced to the surface. She clicks it shut with more force than she means. “I’m feeling cold just looking at you. Please can we just—” She attempts to usher Rose back toward the balcony door, but Rose is firm and unrelenting. Her gaze pierces Luisa like a spear, rooting her in place, until Luisa drops her arms with a sigh. “I don’t want to do this right now. Can we go sit down inside, where you’re less likely to contract hypothermia?”
“No,” Rose answers plainly, crossing her arms. She looks less affected by the weather. If not for the gooseflesh crawling up her exposed throat, Luisa might assume she couldn’t even feel the cold. “I’m sick of pretending that nothing’s wrong, or biting my tongue and hoping that whatever’s upsetting you will eventually just go away. It isn’t, and it’s—” her acerbic tone gentles, the words whispering out of her in visible puffs of white breath, “it’s not fair for you to pretend that you’re okay just to keep me from worrying. I know you, Luisa, I know when something is bothering you.”
Luisa blinks a sheen of moisture from her eyes and lowers them to the knot in Rose’s bathrobe. She tugs on it with gloved fingers and then re-ties it tighter than it had been, all the while with Rose waiting patiently for her to speak. Casting a look over her shoulder, Luisa eyes the distance to the ground from their balcony perch, and considers how badly she might hurt herself if she were to jump.
She’d survive the fall. Probably, the landing could do little damage…
The thought brings a soft tut from beneath her tongue, and she releases the robe with a cloudy sigh.
“It’s Christmas,” she whispers, unable to meet Rose’s gaze. Instead, it lingers in the fine silver stitching details on the robe’s lapels – spun silken snowflakes caught in a wintry gale. Just looking at them makes her feel colder. “It’s Christmas Day and I can’t call anyone to wish them a Merry Christmas. I can’t even write. I have no idea what they’re doing, if they’re together, if they’re okay— they have no idea about me, either.” Her expression draws in, bottom lip pulled between her teeth. “I bet they’re not even thinking of me. I bet, if they are, it won’t be anything good.”
It comes out on a breath of laughter that holds no mirth, and Luisa swallows against the lump in her throat.
“I chose to do this,” she says, and Rose wonders which one of them she’s addressing. “I wanted this, us, I chose you. I don’t regret that.” She looks up, finally, her big brown eyes soft and warm and a little watery, sheening against the light coming from the balcony doors. “I don’t regret that,” louder, steadier, her hands coming to rest in the crooks of Rose’s elbows. “I knew this wouldn’t be easy. I’m just… struggling, I guess.”
Rose presses closer, her slippers dragging against the balcony decking.
She presses a cold, soft hand to Luisa’s cheek – holds it there, until the warmth of Luisa’s skin inspires feeling back into her fingers.
“No one’s faulting you for that,” she murmurs, her voice a low hum. “I know it hasn’t been easy, loving me.”
Luisa’s brow wrinkles. “Don’t think that.”
“I don’t blame you for anything, you know? If not for me, you’d be with them, now.”
“Would I?” Luisa bites the inside of her cheek until it dimples. “We never had Christmases like normal families, not like what you’d see on TV. The best Christmas I ever had was when I decided to stay in college over winter break. It was just me and the foreign exchange students; they did potluck in their dorm, and we ate out in the hall on beanbags and pillows, and then we played hide and seek in the library.” Her brow crinkles again, this time fondly. “I made out with a girl from Greece who was built like a professional football player. I can’t even remember her name.”
Rose snorts delicately, warm breath puffing from her nostrils.
The sight draws a tender smile to Luisa’s mouth.
“You’re not, you know?” she says, stepping forward, lassoing her arms around Rose’s waist and pulling her closer. “You’re not hard for me to love at all. My life would probably be much simpler if you were.”
Rose hangs her arms around Luisa’s shoulders, relaxing against her front.
“It’d be boring,” she agrees, and Luisa snickers. “Sometimes boring is good, when the alternative is going on the run from the law and never seeing your family again.”
“Thanks, I was just getting over that.”
Rose brings both hands to Luisa’s face, this time, squashing her sarcasm between them.
“You’ll never be over that,” she says, and the matter-of-factness of the statement makes Luisa’s breath hitch, but then she never has managed to get over how delicately Rose delivers her killing blows. Rose knows exactly how to turn the world inside out, and she can do it with the same precision it takes for a needle to pop a balloon. The bang makes you jump even when you’re expecting it.
Rose studies her face like she’s looking for a reaction, like she’s waiting for something to happen. Luisa wonders if she’s supposed to protest, but can’t. Won’t. Finally, Rose’s gaze softens. “Next year,” she says, picking her words with care, and with the future so far in the distance Luisa cannot blame her, “I’ll give you a proper Christmas. Dinner, presents, a tree. Anything you want.”
“Anything I want?” Luisa repeats, smiling, but Rose’s expression keeps its almost-solemn quality.
“Anything you want,” she agrees. “I’ll take you to Lapland, I’ll buy you your own goddamn reindeer, if that’s what you ask for.”
“I mean, I don’t know the first thing about their diet,” Luisa scoffs, and then her brows draw in tight with thought, “but Google has never failed me before…” Rose shivers, drawing Luisa’s attention quickly back to her. “What’s this about dinner, though? It’s not too late to find somewhere, right? I know it’s not the same as cooking your own, but I think we’re just gonna have to forgive ourselves for that, given the circumstances.”
“Actually,” Rose begins, coy, caressing Luisa’s cheek with the fat of her thumb, “I thought we’d eat in, still. I don’t want to tempt fate, today of all days. It won’t be a Christmas Dinner, or anything even remotely close to it, but I want to do this for you. I want you all to myself tonight, if that’s okay with you.”
“Wait, you want to cook for me?” At Rose’s nod, Luisa’s lips press closed. “Babe, I love you, but you really don’t need to do that.”
“What are you trying to say?”
Luisa clears her throat. “I mean…”
“Wow,” Rose puffs, unable to hide her smile, even if the offence is real. She drops her hands from Luisa’s face, draping her arms back around her shoulders. Their bodies sway together as Rose suppresses a laugh. “Fine then. I won’t cook.”
Luisa squeezes her tighter around the middle. “You can’t cook, sweetie, it’s not a matter of won’t.”
Rose scoffs but does not disagree, until—
“I can manage mac ‘n’ cheese,” she says, lips pursed. “I can make a really good packet mac ‘n’ cheese.”
Luisa’s eyes her, dubious. “You want mac ‘n’ cheese?”
“I do.”
“You want to make us mac ‘n’ cheese out of a box for Christmas Dinner?”
“That’s right.”
“Huh.”
Rose wets her lips and instantly regrets it. Her ears are beginning to ring from the cold.
“Will you eat it, if I do?”
Luisa snorts and nods her head.
“At this point, I’d take peanut butter on toast. Come on, though, let’s get inside before you freeze to death. Popsicle isn’t on the menu tonight.”
As she says it, she untangles Rose’s arms from around her shoulders and ushers her toward the balcony door.
Shivering, Rose shakes her head, taking Luisa’s hands in hers and halting any further movement. At her girlfriend’s confusion, she presses a kiss to each gloved palm, and then her face. Luisa shivers at the feeling of her mouth, cold and wet, against her own. When she draws back, there’s a light in Rose’s eye – a twinkle in the corner, like a star that’s emerged from behind a slow-drifting cloud – that gives her pause.
“I love you,” Rose tells her, all hot, visible breath and a smile so tender that Luisa bites back the urgency to get them both inside, if just to bask in the warmth that is Rose’s unwavering adoration. “I love you so much. If I could change things—” She sighs. She can’t, and so she discards the thought, with effort. “I’m sorry it isn’t everything you deserve. I’m going to do better, Lu, I mean it.”
Luisa bites the inside of her lip, blinking back the glaze of moisture in her eyes – it only attracts the cold.
“We both are,” she promises, sniffing. “Please, can we go inside now?”
Rose laughs and nods her head.
When Luisa next tries to save her from the cold, she gives no protest, and they step hand-in-hand back into the warmth.

Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
She is like a cat in the dark and then - She is the darkness - She rules her life like a fine skylark and when - The sky is starless -  All your life you’ve never seen - A woman taken by the wind - Would you stay if she promised you heaven? - Will you ever win?

Can't be drawn (with a straight line)
Fandom: Macgyver (2016)
Rating: G
Words: ~1500
Summary: Desi reflects on her new team. Bozer jumps to conclusions.
(Really just me sandboxing with what I’d like to see; I’m enjoying Desi’s character and I’m excited to see what the show does with her! No ships in this fic. Title is from Imperfection by Evanescence.)
(Mobile users I apologize if the read more isn't working)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In hindsight, Desi should probably be a little alarmed at how quickly Jack’s merry band of misfits has grown on her, for all her certainty this was going to be a miserable gig.
It goes like this: get a new assignment. Get your hopes up. Get attached. Get one more grave to leave flowers on. Swear you won’t let it happen again. Rinse and repeat.
She’s spent the morning camped out in the lab with Bozer, sort of working on her report and mostly trying to subtly size up how he’s doing after two brushes with death in quick succession. Guilt sits like molten glass in the pit of her stomach at having been lured away from the Black Site, at having been halfway across the world with Oversight’s car rigged to explode, at having put off getting in touch with the team, at the fact that not even the Phoenix Foundation headquarters are safe now.
At least, she reflects as she half-listens to whatever idea Bozer is using her as a sounding board for, maybe this time she’s let herself get attached to a crew with a pretty remarkable talent for staying alive.
She’s thought that before.
It takes her a moment to realize Bozer’s paused in his explanation of whatever he’s showing her and is looking at her expectantly. Great. She’s tuned out a question.
She glances at what he’s holding and hedges her bets that he’s asking her opinion on it. “Pretty impressive,” she says with a nod to the fake face he’s working on.
He sighs even as he nods and straightens up a little at the compliment, so she’s definitely guessed wrong. “Man, you didn’t hear a thing I just said, did you?”
She shakes her head the tiniest bit and pulls her wandering attention back in. “Got a lot on my mind.” She leans forward, elbows on the table, and tilts her laptop screen down. “You have my undivided attention now.”
Bozer waves dismissively with the hand he’s not using to touch up the eyebrows on his creation. “Hey, I get it, we all got a lot to think about these days. Nah, I was just saying—you and Mac?” He pauses, and she raises her eyebrows, silently waiting for him to finish the thought. “You two seem to be getting along pretty well, huh?”
There’s something that’s a touch too calculated-casual in his tone that gives her pause, makes her question what he’s actually asking. She can’t exactly blame him for being surprised she’s taking a liking to the team—it’s come as a surprise to her too. She shrugs, mouth twisting thoughtfully as she considers the not-really-a-question he’s posed. “He’s alright,” she says eventually. “I may have underestimated him.” She leans in slightly and drops her voice to a conspiratorial undertone. “Between you and me? I thought Jack must have been making up half the stories he told me about Mac.”
Bozer huffs a laugh at that, and Desi watches for a moment to see if the movement irritates his still-healing shoulder, but he seems fine, if a little stiff. “Man, if I hadn’t known him for years, I’d think he was made up too,” he agrees. “Good thing first impressions don’t always stick, yeah?”
“Good thing,” she echoes. “He’s not so bad.” Her mouth twitches up into the tiniest of smiles. “Don’t tell him I said that.”
Bozer grins widely at that. “Your secret is safe with me,” he says. “If he thinks you’re impressed, he might stop trying, am I right?”
She smiles for real at that. “Hey, I did tell him that crane was pretty impressive,” she says. In all honesty, she’s been impressed since at least the burning warehouse, but that doesn’t need to be public knowledge. She grins. “I have a reputation to keep up, you know.”
“Hey, it’s cool, I get it, gotta play it cool,” he says, fidgeting with his tools instead of working, and Desi once again gets the impression there’s something he’s trying to say without saying. “Just don’t play it too cool,” he adds, “because I gotta tell you, man, I love Mac, but he’s not exactly the best in the initiative department, you know?”
Desi squints at him for a moment as she tries and fails to parse what he’s saying, but Bozer looks just awkward enough about whatever it is that if she gives him a moment he’ll keep babbling and hopefully start making some sense.
True to form, Bozer doesn’t let the awkward silence stand for long. “Don’t think he listened when I told him blowing things up isn’t a love language anyone else speaks,” he says, and—oh. That’s where this tangent was going.
She laughs a little, both at the joke and the implication. “Wait, you thought—me and Mac?” She gestures to herself and raises an eyebrow. “I mean, nothing against him, but,” she pauses, mouth curling up in amusement, “not exactly my type.”
Bozer looks unperturbed, if a little surprised, by the newly acquired knowledge that he’s read that dynamic totally wrong. “Hey, that’s cool, totally should’ve guessed you’d be more about the strong silent types,” he says, still not quite hitting the mark for casual, presumably trying to calculate what is her type. “Cause man, Mac really does not have an off switch for the science talk.” He sighs and looks down at his work. “Sometimes you just wanna make toast without getting the pitch for a toaster made from a remote control car and a fishtank, right?”
Desi laughs, because that’s definitely too specific not to be based on a true story. “Definitely would drive me up the wall,” she agrees.
She weighs her next words carefully, balances them on the tip of her tongue and hopes they fall on the right side of casually unconcerned with the reaction. “Besides, Mac’s definitely too male for my taste.” She follows it with a smirk that she doesn’t feel, ignoring the way her heart knocks against her ribcage like mortar fire as she speaks.
Bozer opens his mouth to reply and immediately snaps it back shut without saying anything. She can see the gears turning in his head as he processes what she’s said–processing, a distant part of her mind contributes in Sparky’s voice–and it’s an interminably long moment before he opens his mouth again and words come out. “Well, I read that wrong.” He chuckles weakly at his own failure.
“You wouldn’t be the first to assume,” she says, shrugging one shoulder and probably projecting nonchalance a little too hard.
“Aw, man, you know what they say about assuming,” he says, and he actually kind of looks disappointed in himself for having done so. “Hey, this isn’t one of those ‘everyone knows before Bozer’ things, is it? 'Cause I’m feeling kind of out of the loop.”
She smiles a little more genuinely at that, heartbeat settling down in her chest. “You… actually might be the only one in the loop,” she says.
Bozer’s eyes widen for a second. “Oh. Is it a secret, then? 'Cause if it is, it’s safe with me.” He mimes zipping his lips. “They didn’t send me to spy school for nothing.”
She laughs, even as gratitude swells in her chest at the offer. “Not a secret,” she says after a moment. “You don’t have to lie for me.” She’s had plenty of time to get tired of not asking and not telling. “Not sure how much you picked up in spy school anyway if you thought I was into Mac,” she adds with a grin.
Bozer groans. “Yeah, I get it, I was way off base on that one,” he says.
She rolls her eyes fondly. “As long as you haven’t given Mac the same pep talk you tried to give me,” she says.
“Nope.” He shakes his head, looking forlorn. “Aw, you’re not going to tell him about that, are you? I feel dumb enough with one of you making fun of me for it.”
She grins widely, too many teeth to be strictly friendly. “Let me feed Sparky another riddle and I’ll think about it.”
“You drive a hard bargain,” he says, glancing at Sparky, currently unplugged to prevent Desi from inflicting riddles on him.
He’s spared any further ribbing on the matter when the door swings open and they both glance up to see Mac hovering in the doorway. “Matty needs us in the war room,” he informs them.
“Speak of the devil,” Desi says, tilting her head toward Mac as she stands.
“You guys were talking about me?” Mac asks, raising his eyebrows.
She glances back at Bozer, who still looks a little put out, and takes pity on him, turning to Mac with a smirk. “That’s classified.”
Shelter from the Storm (1/1)
MERRY CHRISTMAS @jennifer-morrison!!!!!!! I was your CS Secret Santa, it was so nice to get to know you!! You have such a sweet pup and it was really fun to get to know someone who loves doing Secret Santa as much as I do.
I hope you like this, there’s bedsharing and making out and I have worried myself into a tizzy over characterization.
There’s no possible good answer to give to Mary Margaret’s question about the temperature when she comes home that afternoon. Oh, Emma’s tried to think of one all day, but really all it boils down to is--
“We forgot to pay the gas bill and they’re closed until Tuesday unless it’s an emergency and yes, I know, I tried to tell them it’s fucking Christmas and December in Maine, but it’s not a blizzard and neither one of us is old and at risk of dying of hypothermia so they basically told me to pay the bill tonight and it’ll get turned on again on Tuesday and ‘get fucked’ was kind of implied in the woman’s tone, but I kind of deserved it because--”
“Emma.” Mary Margaret’s got her ‘teacher voice’ on, which is really intimidating to the ten-year old living in Emma’s brain most days. “Back up, slow down.” She drops her bags on the loveseat near the door and doesn’t take off her peacoat or hat, which is probably the smart thing to do since their apartment is, after all, without heat for the foreseeable future. “When did we forget to pay the gas bill?”
Emma bites her lip and fidgets a little under the responsible stare of Mary Margaret Blanchard, woman of top-buttoned cardigans and color-coded schedules, voted Preferred Designated Driver three years running by their friends, rare rule-breaker, and master of ‘I’m not mad I’m just disappointed’ looks. “Um. September. And October. And last month.”
“Emma--”
“Look, I know utilities are my responsibility--”
“Emma,” Mary Margaret says, louder this time. “Okay. Did you pay the bill?”
“Yes.”
“Even the overdue fees?”
“Yes.”
“And they’ll switch it on again on Tuesday?”
“Barring any weather emergencies, yes.”
Mary Margaret is quiet for a long moment, then scuffs her shoes on the welcome mat briefly before heading for her room. “Okay.”
Emma twists in the chair to watch her fling back the curtain dividing her sleeping area from the living space of the loft. “Okay? That’s it?”
Mary Margaret glances at her before ducking to retrieve a bag from under the bed. “You screwed up, you admitted to it, you took care of it. Being mad isn’t going to help.”
“You’re never mad, you’re--”
“I’m disappointed, but it happens, Emma,” Mary Margaret says, opening her wardrobe.
Emma squints at her best friend, watching as she removes a few items of clothing and puts them in the bag. “You’re being really reasonable about...” She cuts herself off with a gasp when a drawer is opened. “Mary Margaret Blanchard, you scheming little--you’re going to David’s!”
“What?” Mary Margaret slams her underwear drawer closed, her cheeks pink. “No!”
Emma grins. She knows for a fact that, despite having gone on more than three dates, Mary Margaret and her new boyfriend have yet to spend the night together. (They haven’t used the words yet, but really, the way that David looks at Mary Margaret makes Emma surprised that he didn’t pop the question on date two.) Someone had mentioned something about throwing off the weight of expectations and letting it happen naturally.
Well, naturally, Emma had forgotten to pay all of their utilities on time, so the time for letting it happen is apparently now.
“That’s your good underwear drawer,” she says, getting up and trying not to look too smug about the whole thing. “Because you’re an anal retentive freak who of course has a good underwear drawer and a period-panty drawer, and I say that with all the love in my heart--ow!” Emma laughs as Mary Margaret smacks her on the arm, the pink on her cheeks spreading up towards her ears. “So what was the plan going to be, appear on his doorstep with a bag and big sad puppy eyes and a story about how I’m the worst roommate in the world?”
Mary Margaret rolls her eyes and yanks open the drawer again -- the good underwear drawer, thank you very much -- digging out some lacy things that toe the line between racy and tasteful. “Well, first of all you aren’t the worst roommate in the world. You haven’t flooded the place or burned it down.”
“Your roommate freshman year does not get to set the standards for the rest of your life.”
“Oh, she does,” she says, irritation clearly written on her face at the memory. She shakes her head. “Forgetting to pay bills happens, and it’s not like we aren’t used to things getting cut off.”
Emma has to admit the truth in that. She and Mary Margaret have spent more than one night with candles and flashlights as their only light sources, or splitting a box of mac and cheese for dinner… every night in a week. Only in the last year has Mary Margaret upgraded from substituting to teaching full-time, and while bail-jumpers still aren’t as common as Emma would like, she’s still on the payroll down at Booth Bonds and August makes sure she’s taken care of (even if he is kind of an ass about health insurance) in between the bonuses she gets from catching a dirtbag. So maybe she’s gotten used to having things consistent, like actual vegetables to go with their mac and cheese diets, or the power only going out during a nor’easter, and forgotten how it wasn’t that long ago when this was an every-other-month kind of thing.
“And if it gives you an excuse to get laid…” Emma grins as Mary Margaret reaches to smack her again, skipping out of the way. “Look, more blankets for me and I get to hog the space heater. It’s fine, go use your boyfriend. In every sense of the word.”
Her friend looks aghast. “You’re staying here?”
“Where else am I supposed to go? I am definitely not sleeping on David’s couch while you two figure out how to dance the horizontal mambo.” At Mary Margaret’s look, Emma balks. “No. I know that look on your face--”
“He’ll be more than willing--”
“Which is exactly why I’m saying no--”
“Just call him!”
“Mary Margaret!”
“Emma!”
A knock on the door breaks up their bickering. “It’s open!” Mary Margaret calls, flashing Emma a smile. “It’s Friday -- you have a standing date,” she whispers.
“It’s not a date,” Emma hisses, just as the door opens.
“Bloody hell, it’s cold in here.”
Emma turns just as Killian Jones -- man of artfully disheveled hair, buttoned shirts that somehow never button up to the top, scoundrel and rogue, voted Preferred Drinking Buddy three years running, and one of the best friends she’s ever had -- looks around the apartment with concern. “Seriously, are you trying to save on energy costs? Your pipes are going to freeze.”
Emma and Mary Margaret share a panicked glance before Mary Margaret says, “Slow drip, quick.”
As they split up to turn on all the faucets enough to keep water running, though slowly, Killian watches with increasing confusion. “No really, what--”
“I forgot to pay the bill and the gas company can eat my ass,” Emma calls from the bathroom.
She hears Killian snort. “Lovely as your arse is, Swan, I doubt they took the suggestion very well.”
Her mouth twists and she feels her cheeks warm. “I didn’t say it to them.”
“No, you just thought it. Loudly.”
Coming out of the bathroom, she grabs one of her beanies and shoves it on over her hair, hoping to retain some of her body heat. “Did not,” she says, mulishly.
The look he levels at her makes her feel warm all over. “I know you, love, don’t forget. The moment you can tell someone to piss off, or one of your other charming turns of phrase, you do. There’s no hesitation.”
“He’s right,” Mary Margaret says, placing a few more items into her bag and then zipping it shut. “There’s a reason I made you call the cable company.” She picks up her bag with a small grunt, walking awkwardly towards the door with it. “Okay, so I’m going then. Emma, you do what you need to but please do not freeze to death in our apartment over Christmas. You’ll hang around as some sort of Christmas ghost and judge me for whoever I choose as my next roommate.”
Emma snorts. “Please. I would not Marley you, you’re way more Fuzziwig than Scrooge.”
Mary Margaret laughs and waves as she heads out the door. Killian looks at Emma, still bemused to the whole situation. “So, there’s no heat.”
“No.”
“And Mary Margaret is going… where, exactly?”
Emma smiles, wrapping herself in a blanket from the back of the couch and plopping down on the cushions. Killian sits next to her, looking at her with one eyebrow raised expectantly. “She’s going to go make a man out of Sheriff Nolan,” Emma says, a note of pride in her voice. “Making the best out of a stupid situation. I’m sorry movie night is going to be kind of cold.”
Killian shakes his head. “No, it’s not.” At her inquisitive eyebrow, he continues, “It’s not going to be cold because we’re going to my place. And you’re bringing a bag and you aren’t coming back until they’ve turned your heat back on. I much prefer your company while you’re not half-frozen, Swan.”
Her heart leaps into her throat. “Killian, I can’t possibly impose like that.”
“It’s not an imposition if I offer first, love.”
“Still--it’s Christmas, and--”
“All the more reason. Tis the season and all, yeah?”
Emma huffs and Killian smiles. “Look, Swan, it’s not as if either you or I have any big grand plans for the holiday. In fact, if I recall correctly, our plan was to have takeout together and watch ridiculous movies. This just ensures you won’t be late.”
She scoffs, smacking him on the arm, and his smile widens into a grin. Her heart, slowly making its way down from her throat, skips a beat.
This would be why staying at Killian’s would be a terrible idea. She’s had a ridiculous crush on him since--well, since she shot him down that one time he asked her out and then actually backed off respectfully. It wasn’t an immediate thing, more a slow realization that he actually meant it when he said he’d back off if his advances made her uncomfortable. And then it turned out that they worked ridiculously well together -- as friends, as partners in pinochle, as Tom Servo and Crow when it came to bad movies.
And then Emma didn’t want to ruin that by saying “Hey remember when you asked me to dinner and I told you to get lost? Yeah, taking that back now, let’s go out. And then make out on your ridiculously comfortable couch.”
It’s going to be a lot harder to resist making out with him on his couch when she’s going to be sleeping on said couch.
Though, maybe, it might be harder when he’s sleeping on said couch.
“I’m not staying here if you’re making me take your damn bed, Jones,” Emma says an hour or so later, braced for a fight in his blessedly warm living room.
“And my mother will rise from the dead and shame me from now until hell freezes over if I allow a woman to sleep on my couch when I’m not bedridden or otherwise incapacitated.”
Mary Margaret’s always warning her that if she keeps rolling them, her eyes are going to roll right out of her head and across the floor, but everyone just keeps saying ridiculous things and Emma can’t help it. “Well, I’m pretty sure that I’m a big girl who can make her own decisions on where to sleep. And it’s on the couch. You have an extremely comfortable couch.”
To prove her point, she goes to root around in his linen closet, intent on making up the couch herself. Yes, they were planning on a movie night still, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have everything ready; she smiles to herself, thinking about how he’s going to grumble when she inevitably kicks him out to sleep in his own bed, but then her hands still as she wonders what might happen if she just… didn’t.
If she just asked him to stay. Or… didn’t ask, but didn’t… make him leave.
She feels warmth behind her and Killian’s hands cover hers, taking the sheets from her. “Stubborn lass,” he murmurs, right near her ear.
Emma watches him go, fingering the hems of her sleeves while she watches him make up the couch. Quietly, she goes to change into her pajamas--no use taking extra steps later, be comfortable now--and by the time she comes back out of the bathroom he’s already finished with the sheets and the blankets; now he’s perched on the end of the couch, a 6-pack of Christmas ales sitting unopened on the coffee table, with a fresh bag of chips and some salsa sitting out for their eating pleasure. “Well isn’t this festive?” Emma asks, sitting down and opening the bag. “What’s on the docket for tonight?”
They argue for a bit about what to watch--Christmas movies are for Christmas Eve, Die Hard is so a Christmas movie and thus off the table, they don’t want anything too sappy or action-y tonight--and while Emma then scrolls through the movie list, Killian goes to put on his own pajamas. She’s distracted when he comes back, eyes following the line of his well-fitted shirt (seriously, who wears a fitted shirt to bed? Killian Jones, apparently) down to where his pajama pants sit low on his hips.
Her mouth feels very dry and there’s no bottle opener for the Christmas ales.
Fuck, staying here is a terrible idea, no matter how warm his apartment actually is.
He barely sits when he says, “Damn, the bottle opener,” and gets up to go to the kitchen and fuck her life if his pants aren’t like, expertly sculpted to his ass. Did Yves Saint Laurent make pajamas now? Distracted as she is, she doesn’t really pay attention to what movie she picks; her fingers just seem to take over from her brain’s complete lack of comprehensive abilities and all Emma hears is the ‘yay thank you for choosing a movie!’ noise coming from the TV. She just hopes she didn’t choose something too sappy or silly or childish. Or all three.
“What are we watching?” Killian asks, the bottle opener in his prosthetic and picking up a beer with the other. He pops the lid off and hands it to her, reaching for his own.
“I left it to the whims of fate,” she says, hoping she sounds very casual about it and not at all like she wants to say ‘fuck this’ to the movie and crawl on top of him and rip him out of his absurdly well-fitted pajamas. “Like throwing a dart, but less holes left in your wall.”
He chuckles, setting the bottle opener down. “Well I, and my landlord, thank you for the consideration, love.”
They tap the bottlenecks together and take a swig; Emma practically dives into the chips and salsa while whatever it is her fingers picked to watch starts playing.
It’s some animated movie. It might be about feelings or growing up or both. She’s not too sure, but it’s bright and colorful and she absolutely starts to feel tired about half an
hour into it. She steals the blanket across the back of the couch and bundles herself in it, snuggling into the cushions and just… closing her eyes for a moment.
Just a moment. Just…
*~*
There’s a pillow under her head. There definitely hadn’t been any pillows like this on the couch, a plush and soft one with an actual pillowcase, and while Killian’s couch is comfortable, it’s not pillow-top comfortable.
She vaguely remembers being picked up at some point, but nothing after that. And if she’d been picked up, it meant Killian had put her in his bed, after she’d specifically insisted--
“Dammit, Killian,” she mumbles, stretching a little and rolling onto her belly.
“What on earth have I done now?”
She freezes, mid-pillow plumping, and realizes that the weight around her middle is not, actually, the blankets bunched up on her. Turning her head, she cracks open an eye and sees him lying next to her, one arm around her middle, and seeming just as half-asleep and bemused as she. His hair’s a riot on top of his head and his beard is scruffy from lack of trimming, and Emma has never felt more like she might be in love with him than she has in this moment. “I told you to let me stay on the couch,” she whispers finally.
“And you did fight me on that, even in sleep. I did attempt to move you, and yet you clung to me even in sleep and refused to let me leave, so in that case it seemed to me that the best compromise was to stay.”
Emma’s glad for the darkness in the room still because she’s pretty sure there’s not much that she could use as an excuse for why her cheeks were so red. “Well, I won’t apologize since it wasn’t what I wanted in the first place,” she grumbles, snuggling deeper into the pillow.
Killian chuckles and she feels his thumb tracing a pattern on her hip. “Stubborn lass.”
She hums in agreement, wriggling into his touch and feeling sleepy again. Killian mumbles something under his breath and moves closer, pulling her snug against his chest. “Killian,” Emma whispers, sucking in a breath and feeling much more awake.
But he’s fast asleep, or good at pretending, and doesn’t reply. Emma lays still for a few moments to make sure he’s asleep once more, then pulls away. He was half-asleep, she thinks as she gets out from under the blankets and to her feet; the carpet is cool under her skin and her heart races as she tiptoes to the kitchen to get breakfast going. It didn’t mean anything, he was half-asleep.
Killian’s kitchen is well stocked, but even so she’s not that much of a cook. She gets the coffee going, which is honestly the most important part, and then just decides to make pancakes. Beating the eggs and whipping the powder mix together helps her get her emotions under control, though she possibly squishes the pancakes down a little harder than necessary in the pan.
She’s pathetic, in love with her best friend and too chicken to say anything about it, too overcome by a simple thing as him holding her to stay in bed and enjoy it. He’d been warm and she’d really just wanted to roll over and press her back to his front and enjoy the feeling of being held, but no. He was half-asleep and it didn’t count and he’s just her best friend and why does it hurt so much?
God, she hopes Mary Margaret is having a better Christmas weekend than she is. Not that this is bad, per say, but she’d rather go without having more fuel to add to the fire that is her stupid, unrequited crush.
There’s a shuffling down the hall and she busies herself with the pancake mix. “Hmm, something smells delicious,” Killian rumbles.
She glances over her shoulder, watching briefly as he scrubs his hand over his face. “It’s just from a box,” she says, feeling a little dejected.
“I wasn’t talking about the pancakes,” he says and she hears the grin in his voice. “The coffee, love, it’s a godsend.”
She cracks half a smile as she hears him rattle around with the coffee mugs. “It’s why I did that first. And before you say anything, I am, in fact, aware that I don’t have to cook for you just because you let me stay. Even if you did drag me to bed against my will.”
He makes a sort of choking noise into his coffee mug. “Pardon?”
“Oh you told me all about it, buddy.”
“I did?”
Her heart sank a little further. “Yeah. You must have been talking in your sleep, but I cussed you out about it and you just went back to sleep.”
He’s quiet for a few moments and she finishes the last pancake, sliding it onto the stack and turning off the burner. She goes to drop the pan and the mixing bowl in the sink and as soon as they leave her hands, his own catches her wrist. “Emma, are you cross with me?”
No, never with you. Except when you cheat at Scrabble, but that’s fair game, she thinks. “No.”
He pulls a little and makes her look at him. That’s cheating, giving her those big eyes, so full of trust and sincerity, letting her know that it’s completely fine to tell him anything. “I’m not,” she says. “I’m just… well, you’re just as touchy-feely when you’re mostly-asleep as you are when you’re drunk, that’s all.”
“Emma, if I’ve at all behaved inappropriately towards you--”
“No! God, Killian, no. You were just missing your teddy bear or whatever,” she says, yanking her hand free and going to get plates.
He doesn’t respond and they eat in the most uncomfortable silence Emma’s ever sat through. She doesn’t look at him and though she’s fairly hungry, her cinnamon-laced pancakes go down like lead. She shouldn’t have said anything. Now he feels awkward and it didn’t bother her--not the way he probably thinks--and she’s made the whole of Christmas weekend terrible.
“I’m going to shower,” she says quietly after she’s put her dishes in the sink.
She’s quick and efficient, drying her hair in much the same way. She packs up her bag when she’s done dressing, figuring the fastest way out of this awkwardness is to just leave him to it alone. She can suffer with a space heater and a mountain of blankets. “Swan, what are you doing?”
Killian’s in the doorway, watching her with a worried look on his face. “Going back to my apartment,” she mumbles, zipping the bag up with more force than strictly necessary.
“Emma, please talk to me. Have I done something?”
Frustration bubbles up in her chest. “No,” she snaps. “It’s not--look, I liked it, okay? You held me this morning, and I liked it, and I don’t--I just need to go, okay?”
“Emma.” He’s like a brick wall in her way, giving her a pleading look as she tries and fails to get past him. “Lass, I may--I may not have been entirely truthful. Or, rather, chose not to mention… It wasn’t an accident.”
“What wasn’t an accident?”
She feels nervous all of a sudden, adrenaline making her fingers tingle and her heart pounds in her chest. He looks just as nervous, but his lips quirk up in a brief smile. “The teddy bear thing,” he says, his voice almost a whisper. “It may--it may not have been--well, it wasn’t an accident. I wanted to… It wasn’t very gentlemanly of me and I apologize about that, but I just wanted to see… for once… what it might feel like to hold you.”
That last part is barely audible, but she’s close enough that she hears it all the same. “You--”
“Aye.”
Her nerves increase but it’s powered by hope rather than fear, and she’s not sure which of them moves first but they do meet somewhere in the middle for a tangle of lips and tongues and sighs. Her hands find his hair, still a complete mess and about to get even messier if she has anything to say about it, and his arms wrap around her waist to pull her in snug against him. She still has some questions about how it might--will--feel to have his front pressed to his back, but she’s fairly certain that having their fronts pressed together is the most wonderful thing she’s felt in ages.
Though there might be too many clothes between them, if the way his body is reacting to hers has anything to say about it.
It’s a tangle of limbs and laughter as they stumble back to the bed, knocking her bag off of it in the process as they lay back down, but there’s no move to remove their clothes, simply reveling in the learning curve of kissing and light touches. He finds where she’s ticklish and makes her giggle against his lips and his smile is bright enough to rival the Christmas tree out in the living room and she’s happy. The fastest switch from glum to glee she can ever remember feeling and the cause of both is the man in front of her, his fingers tracing her chin and looking at her like he’s never seen anything so wonderful in his entire life. “I can’t--I’ve been in love with you for what feels like forever,” she confesses quietly.
He smiles, it’s soft and she loves the lines that crinkle around his eyes. “Yeah?” he asks.
“You’re going to kill me for it, but probably around the time I told you to fuck off after asking me out.”
He looks at her differently now, maybe like she’s grown another head, but then he starts to laugh. He rolls onto his back, tears streaming from his eyes as he laughs so hard he can hardly breathe, and Emma eventually starts to giggle too, burying her face in the crook of his arm. “You bloody would,” Killian says finally, wiping the heel of his hand across his face to clear the tear tracks.
“Shut up,” she mumbles, still giggling, and pinches him for good measure.
He yelps and wriggles away, leaving her to prop her head up on her arm to look at him better. He turns his head, his cheeks pink from laughter, and her heart melts a little at his smile. “I’ve loved you a bit longer than that, I think, but I never expected you’d return how I feel.”
“Yeah, well… I came around to the idea eventually. And was a big chicken about it. It was easier to stay quiet.”
“While I wish you hadn’t, I understand why. And I wouldn’t trade our years of friendship for anything, love. We got there in the end didn’t we?”
She smiles and leans forward, touching their foreheads together. “Yeah. Eventually.”
*~*
On Christmas morning, Emma’s cell phone wakes them both from the bedside table. She rolls over and reaches for it, swearing up a storm at the noise and at Killian’s laughter next to her. “Good morning and David had better have turned out to be the guy who floods the apartment and burns it down,” Emma says.
Mary Margaret just laughs. “Merry Christmas to you, too. Have you survived the weekend?”
Emma smiles as Killian’s lips brush over her bare shoulder. They’d talked yesterday about letting their friends know about this little development, but decided just to keep this between themselves for a little while longer. Their own little Christmas secret. She leans into it and smiles wider as his hand brushes down her back and teases the backs of her thighs. “We’ve survived. There was a lot of beer and movies. I should be asking you that--how’s the state of your vagina?”
Killian makes a noise that’s halfway between a choke and a laugh and Mary Margaret is a little more vocally scandalized by the question. “Emma Swan, you--it’s fine, thank you very much, but what was that noise?”
“Killian’s coming down with a cough. He was up before me making coffee, making noise and trying to wake me up,” Emma lies easily.
Her best friend hums, not quite believing her, but perhaps in the spirit of Christmas she doesn’t question it further. “Well, things here have been good. Better than good. You didn’t hear anything more from the gas company?”
“No,” Emma says, arching her back a little into Killian’s touch. “But I expected as much. Might not be able to go home until Wednesday.”
“Shame,” Mary Margaret replies, a little wistful and not at all regretful about maybe having to stay at her boyfriend’s house another day.
Killian ducks under the covers and his lips start mapping a path down her back. “Yeah,” Emma says with a happy sigh. “A damn shame.”
She’s Got It
A secret santa fic for: @queenbeazley! Title: She’s Got It (Also on A03! let me know if you have an a03 account and I can gift it to you : -)) Prompt: Lucien & Jean, meeting via karaoke night AU (bar or location of your choosing) Word Count: 4,000 (almost on the dot) Warnings: N/A A/N: Sorry I wasn’t more present in your ask box, RL has been hectic recently. Hopefully though, you enjoy the fic! I don’t write fluff or Lucien/Jean often (ever?), but I did my best :-)  Merry Christmas, and I hope the new year is kind to you!
Well, your daughter only turns eighteen once, was how he mollified himself stepping out of the car. Li comically threw herself onto the ground, but stopped short of kissing the ground. “Oh dear God, I’m alive!” She exclaimed. Her brother scoffed as he slid out of the drivers seat. Charlie looked offended by her comment. “I wasn’t that bad.” He muttered, even though Lucien had to wretch the wheel out of his hand no less than three times.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched a boy in a fairly poor George Michael costume approach them. Charlie’s boyfriend, Danny. Compared to Charlie, who was wearing the same denim jacket he wore every day with the addition of one ‘I killed Laura Palmer’ badge (taken from the shed, from a box of things Mei Lin left behind and Charlie had decided were his). “Good evening Doctor Blake!” Danny said, wrapping an arm around Charlie’s shoulders. The 1980s music pumping out of the pub is a song he recognizes but doesn’t know. “Good evening, Danny.” He smiled. “My driving isn’t that bad, is it?” Charlie asked as they went inside. Danny pulled an expression Lucien recognized from his own marriage that was a ‘you are, but I don’t want to hurt your feelings.’ Expression.
“It is.” Lucien said, stepping inside. “Yeah. I’m adding another song for almost killing us.” Li declared. “You wouldn’t.” “It’s my birthday so you have to do as I say.” Li said. Charlie looked to Lucien for help but he put his hands up. “Sorry son. She’s the birthday girl.” Lucien said, as the four of them wandered over to a large booth towards the back of the building. Charlie slid into one side of the booth, pulling Danny with him. He slid in across from him, Li slid in next to him.
It was on his first glance around the room that he noticed her. She was standing up on the stage, holding the microphone maybe a little tight in her hand. Her green drop waisted dress looked like it came directly from the decade in question, paired with a blazer that gave her shoulders rival to his own. He can imagine going to a nightclub in town and finding her at the bar, sipping an exotic cocktail from a glass with a tiny umbrella in it. And that wasn’t even getting him started on her voice.
“The goddess of beauty and love, and Venus was her name-“
She’s got it, yeah baby she’s got it, Lucien thought, the lyrics to the Bananarama song echoing around his head. He hadn’t even noticed her equally 80’s backup singers, equally coated in neon, tulle and poor choices. He tore his eyes away from the singing to look at Charlie, who was waving his hand in front of his face. “Doc? Doc? Earth to doc!” In a comical fashion. “Hm?” “Do you want something to drink?” “Hm?” “We’re in a pub, Daddy.” Li said, “A place where people go to drink.” Charlie is holding his debit card, while Danny poured over a menu. “Uh, I’ll just…Have a lemonade.” He said, and then produced his own card. “Put that away, use mine.” Charlie shrugged, and tucked his card into his pocket. “Drinks on me.” “Oh, you don’t have to do that.” Danny said, blushing. “My daughter will only turn eighteen once.” Lucien grinned, “So drinks are on me.” Danny conceded, and trailed after Charlie as he went to get drinks.
Green dress has gotten off stage, but he quickly spotted her sitting in a booth down near the stage with her friends. There’s quite a large group of them, and they’re all about her age. “Are you going to sing a song?” She asked, looking at the man giving a rather disappointing rendition of Everybody Wants to Rule the World. “Maybe.” He commented, as Li started combing through the enormous book of songs that the machine played. She’d come prepared with a note pad and paper to write down the ones that she wanted to sing, or force her brother into singing.
“Have you heard from your mother?” He asked, softly. “She texted me this morning.” Li said, looking up from the notepad. “How is she?” “She’s fine. She likes Singapore a lot.” Li smiled, “Looking forward to when I come over for the holidays.” He nodded, and sat back in his chair. He was happy with the way custody was split, (or, had been split now she was eighteen) but that didn’t make saying goodbye to his daughter for months at a time any easier. Over time, his relationship with Mei Lin has gotten better, but it still wasn’t great. They tried their best to keep things civil for Li’s sake.
“I’ve got drinks!” Charlie said excitedly, coming around the table. He was holding a small pitcher of beer and a couple of glasses, and Danny was holding a can of Diet Coke, and a can of lemonade, as well as bowl of chips in his other hand. “Wooo!” Li said, enthusiastically as Danny poured drinks. Charlie slid back into the booth and popped the top on his Diet Coke, and slid a can of Kirks across the table to him. “They didn’t have any Sprite.” Charlie apologized, as Lucien took a long sip. “It’s fine.” He smiled, as Danny and Li tapped their drinks together. His eyes drifted away through the crowd, and he spotted green dress laughing with her friends in front of the machine, clearly going up for another song.
“Looks like we might be fighting for control of the machine.” Danny said, draping an arm around Charlie’s shoulders. Charlie looked for a moment like he might shrug it off, and then thought better of it, squishing up closer to Danny’s side so he could see the book. He observed the interaction and smiled to himself. He liked Danny a lot, he thought it was good for Charlie to be with someone who was affectionate.
Not for the first time, he felt a tiny niggle of jealousy deep in his gut. He and Mei Lin had married young, he wanted to upset his father, and he thought she was going to be the love of his life. Li was born, and things got miserable. He’d been determined that his daughter wasn’t going to grow up in an unhappy home, and he and Mei Lin tried and tried to work it out, but it still ended in divorce. Of course, then Charlie fell into his life, and he’d become a full-time father again, not just the half of the year when Li was with him.
He’d been busy, with work and child rearing (and drinking).  He hadn’t done much by way of dating when Charlie was young, and he hadn’t since he moved out, either. His eyes drifted out over the collection of people, and then came back to rest on Charlie and Danny. Maybe it was time to get back into the game.
Green dress was back up on stage, her metallic blue eye shadow sparking in the light. She was alone this time, and her slightly drunk friends are cheering loudly by the stage.
´”You with the sad eyes, don't be discouraged-“
“True colours.” Charlie said, scribbling that down on Li’s notepad. “Have you heard her new album? The country one?” Danny asked, to which Li shook her head. Lucien drowned their chatter out to pay attention to the veritable siren on the stage.
“But I see your true colors, shining through. I see your true colors, and that's why I love you-“
“Don’t be afraid, to let them show…” He murmured under his breath. Oblivious to his heart eyes, the three young people at the end of the table pulled him back into conversation. “Alright, Daddy-o.” Li started, “We’ve picked out some songs.” He tore his eyes away from her for the second time to look at them. “Charlie is going to be singing Wake Me Up Before you Go Go-“ “Against my wil-“ “-Shut up Charlie, Danny will be singing Ice Ice Baby-“ “Which is actually from the 90-“ “Shut up, Charlie, I will be singing Cornflake Girl-“ “That is from the 90s, just like-“ “Shut up, Charlie,  and you will be singing Mona.” “Which is also from the 90s.” “Which version of Mona?” He asked, ignoring Charlie. “Well, since you keep saying you look like him, the Craig Mac version.” “I think you mean Craig Mac and the Check 1 -2s.” “Whatever. It’s in the book.” Lucien looked at Charlie, who was arms folded and nearly pouting. “I’m lost, who’s Craig Mac?” “Craig McLachlan, people always say Doc looks like him.” Charlie said, filling his boyfriend in on the situation. “Who?” “Remember when I took you to see Rocky Horror?” “Yeah.” “The main dude.” Danny tilted his head and examined the man. “I can kinda see it.” Danny said, “Maybe if you were wearing lipstick.” “I told you I look like him.” Lucien insisted, as Charlie rolled his eyes. “People mistake me for him all the time.” “Sure they do.” Li said, rolling her eyes, too. Charlie is a terrible influence on her. “Well, if they ever make a movie of my life, I know who they’ll cast.” “Yes, Doc, they’ll make a movie of your life. Working at the clinic, driving Li to soccer practice and dragging your son to an 80s night and everyone decides to sing 90s songs.” “You don’t know that. Maybe I’ll save the life of a famous person, or be in a really bad boating accident.” “Yeah you don’t have to actually be good at anything, you just have to have lots of bad stuff happen to you.” Danny agreed. “We’re not living in Scream, Danny.” Charlie scoffed, “And if Doc’s life was made into a movie, what kind of dinky d-lister are they going to get to play me? Some dude who people only remember from one appearance in a shitty kids film, probably.” “Speak for yourself, I’m at least a B-lister.” Danny said, “Hopefully, some hot, young Home and Away alum.” “With my luck,” Li said, “I won’t be played by anyone because it’ll happen when I was seeing Mum.” The three of them tittered, and Lucien, having had enough of his spawns bickering, rolled his eyes. “I am going to que us up at the machine.” He declared, getting to his feet. “Alright, then.” Charlie said, handing him the slip of paper. Li slid out of the booth, and after a moment, got right back into bickering with Charlie. Lucien rolled his eyes, and wandered down to the front of the pub. The karaoke machine sat at the bottom of a little stage, and it seemed to be a free for all when you were putting in your songs.
He cued up each of the songs Li had written down, and then looked over at the machine. He typed in each song so they were cued up, and paused to watch the women on stage, belting out ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ as if their lives depended on it. Green dress was standing in the crowd, mouthing the word. He could walk up, and talk to her, if he really wanted. There was nothing wrong with that. But he’s a coward, and she’s here with her friends, so instead he goes back to the table.
“Who’s up first?” Li asked, taking another sip of beer. “Me.” Lucien scoffed, “Who else?” “Your freshly legal daughter?” “Don’t be ridiculous. Eldest first.” “Well, by that logic, I should be first.” Charlie counted, “Since I am in fact a one hundred and five-year-old alien.” “Can you prove that?” Lucien asked. “Can you disprove it?” “You look good for your age.” Danny said, “I would have thought you were only eighty-five.” “It’s not my fault I was blessed with beautiful skin.” He’s barely been sitting for five minutes when his song flashes on the machine. “We’ll be here.” Li says, all but shoving him out of the booth.
He hurried to the stage, and took the microphone in both hands. The lights were so bright he could hardly see the crowd, but he did notice Green Dress watching him, interested. Lucien has never thought of himself as a shy person, but damn she was making it hard. Look at you, old fool. You don’t even know her and you’re acting like she’s your high school crush.
The music kicked in, and words danced along the screen suddenly. He hadn’t realized it, but he’d started to sing.  He was already at the chorus when his mind kicked in. He’d been swept up in the memory of playing this on Charlie’s school guitar with him.
“Tell you Mona what I want to do!”
He sang, the crowd cheering him on. Suddenly, he’s struck with a devious idea. He moved to the front of the stage, keeping his voice steady as he reached out, drawing on his inner Craig McLachlan, he offered green dress a hand. To his surprise, she took it, and let him lead her to the stage.
In the bright lights, she looks all but angelic. Her hair is ridiculously back combed and it looks like a halo in the light. He can’t tell if her eyes are sparkling or if it’s the makeup, but either way it’s beautiful. She moved left, then right, her hands suspended in the air as she moved in time with the bouncy music. Her lipstick is pink, and has tiny sparkles suspended in it. She smells like a mix of perfume and cocktails. He wants to keep starring at her as she lets him take a hand, hers fits seamlessly into his, and turn her around.
The light catches on the metallic fabric of her dress, and she can’t help but give him the most beautiful smile he’s ever seen as the song finally comes to a close. The romantic lighting fades away, and they’re back to standing on a demountable stage in a slightly dodgy bar in a worse for wear part of town. Only three of the lights work, and behind him the neon lights are only half working. They stand for a moment, looking at each other, before laughing. They get the same clap as everyone else, polite but mostly disinterested.
The next song clicks onto the screen, and both of them scurried off to the tables in the front row. Deciding that the kids could wait, he sat across from her, and they both looked at one another, before laughing again. “I must say, you’re a very talented singer, Mister?” “Lucien. Lucien Blake. And you?” “Jean.” “Nice to meet you, Jean. “And you.” “So what brings a lovely lady like you, to a place like this?” Okay not his smoothest move but it would do. “A girls night. No better decade than the eighties.” She grinned. Her teeth are white and square. “You?” “My kids birthday.” She looked at the stage where Danny was belting out Ice Ice Baby with enough enthusiasm for ten people.
“That’s one of yours?” “He’s actually my future son in law.” Pause. “Should I be worried about my kid dating someone who looks like me?” Apparently, his dad humor amused her because she chuckles. “Ahh, we all mess up our kids, comes with the territory.” There’s something sad under the laughter. He decides to take her mind off it. “Well, children aside, can I buy you a drink?” “Mighty forward of you, am I to assume there’s no Mrs Blake?” “There is not.” Not anymore, not that she needed to know that. She contemplated, before she nodded. She checked her oversized watch. “I’ll have a ginger ale.” Lucien grinned and made his way to the counter. He noticed Charlie is hiding his face, and Danny is now sitting on the opposite side of the table, and Li is all but skipping towards the stage. He grabbed a ginger ale, and a diet Coke for himself.
He returned to his seat, and delivered the lady her ginger ale. “Is this one one of yours?” He doesn’t comment on her usage of one twice. “My only and eldest daughter.” Li was singing off key, but what she lacked in nuance, she made up for with enthusiasm.
“I always wanted a daughter.” Jean said, “But God only saw fit to bless me with sons.” “How many sons?” “Two, Jack and Christoper Jr.” “A family name?” “After my late husband.” “I’m so sorry.” “This isn’t very good first meeting talk.” Jean observed. “As old people, we are strictly limited to discussing our children, marriages and the weather.” “And IKEA sales.” “IKEA is having a sale?” “Yeah it just finished, flat pack was half price.” He clicked his arms in front of him. “Damn. Just missed it.” Jean laughed, and took a sip of her drink, her lipstick left a mark around the rim. Interestingly, she doesn’t use a straw. They lapse into a comfortable silence until Li finishes singing, and Lucien has to do his fatherly duty and ensure he’s clapping the loudest. Li flung herself off the stage, and ran over excitedly. “Did you like it?” “Of course I did.” He said, irrespective of if he actually did. “It was great.” Jean said, as Li eyed her. Apparently, she passed the test, because Li grinned. “I’m going to force Charlie onto the stage.” Lucien caught her arm. “I know ribbing Charlie about his driving and bad attitude is all fun and games, but if he really doesn’t want to do it, don’t force him.” He warned her.  “He’s allowed to bow out if he’s not comfortable.” Li nodded, and hurried back to the table.
“She seems like a nice young lady.” Lucien gave a wiry smile. “You haven’t gotten to know her yet.” “Will I?” “I haven’t decided yet.” He replied, “Would you like to?” “I haven’t decided yet.”
Lucien looked up as Charlie took the stage, his hands shaking hard as he tried to keep a tight hold on the microphone. Danny is already cheering, much to the annoyance of the other patrons, but they could all serve to lighten up a little. What Li had lacked in talent she made up for with gusto. Danny…Well Lucien doesn’t know; he’s pretty sure Ice Ice Baby isn’t even a real song, but he’d at least had enthusiasm. Charlie has neither skill, nor excitement, and his singing amounted to him mumbling into the microphone. But he gave it a shot and Lucien supposed that was the most important part
“One of yours?” “Yep.” He replied, as Charlie slunk off stage before he could even begin to clap; Danny cheering as loudly as he dared. He slunk off stage and into the bathroom. Lucien watched as Danny followed after him and supposed he got it covered. Jean touched his arm lightly. “He’s quite brave.” “He always is.” He replied, “Can I buy you another drink?” He inquired, smiling. Charlie would be fine.  Jean checked her watch again. “No, but you can sing a little duet with me, if you’d like.” Jean said, swallowing the last of her drink.  Lucien observed her for a moment, before nodding. “Of course. What do you fancy singing?” “I’ll surprise you.”
Lucien watched her walk away, and he noticed he’s smiling to himself. She keys in a song to be performed after the woman on stage finishes her (very enthusiastic) version of ’I Ran (so far away)’. While he waited, he wandered up to Jean, coming to a stop next to her. She smiled at him, and she looks like the sun has just risen for the first time.
When the woman gets off the stage, he joins her, there is only one microphone, so they have to stand very close. He can smell her breath: ginger ale and alcohol. Maybe a little bit of toothpaste. The song title flashes up on the screen, accompanied by an unfortunately fake sounding guitar: ‘More Than Words – Extreme’ Huh. He kind of remembers that song, but not too well. Not well enough he could sing it by heart, but It’ll do. Jean takes the opening verse, starting a fraction of a second before he can open his mouth.
“Saying "I love you" Is not the words I want to hear from you-“
Lucien is struck by the thought that her voice would sound beautiful up against a plain piano, maybe a metronome. It’s a beautiful voice, attached to a beautiful woman. He is ridiculously infatuated with her, despite having known her for less than an hour. Matthew was going to think this was a hilarious story when he shares it next time they meet for lunch.
That’s if he survives the teasing from his kids.
“What would you do? If my heart was torn in two?”
Lucien’s heart is already in two, but of course, he doesn’t say that out loud. It’s just a song, after all, it’s meant to be relatable. No one wants to listen to music they cannot relate to. It’s why teen pop sells so well, and also probably why Charlie used to have a wall full of Justin Bieber posters. Because people relate to having a crush, or being in love, or having whatever an Ennie Meanie Miney Mo lover is. And he, in his old age of fifty, can relate to having a heart torn in two. That’s just how it was.
Jean picks up for the Chorus, all but belting the lyrics in true karaoke style.
“Make things new, just by saying "I love you-"”
I love you. Lucien has said a lot of I love yous in his life.
To his mother. To his wife. To his daughter. To his son. To his close friends. To his dogs. He’s said a lot of I Love Yous and he is suddenly and shockingly struck by the fact that he would like, some day, to say I love you to Jean with no last name he met in a dodgy bar in a worn out neighborhood, like a fool. He is a fool. A hopeless romantic, sure, but still a fool. You don’t fall in love with someone you just met. Love takes time, and work, and effort, and he wants to do all that. But first, he just wants to get through this song.
“Touch me, hold me close, don't ever let me go. More than words is all I ever needed you to show-“
Could he have saved his other relationship? Potentially. Touch me. Hold me close. He wanted to hold someone close. He wanted to be held. He wanted romance, and love. Someone once told him, potentially Matthew, that he was built to love, that he had too much of it, and he was destined to be a bleeding heart. That has never felt more true than it did right now.
“La di da, da di da, di dai dai da-”
Beautiful.
“More than words-“
Wonderful.
Her perfume smells chemically floral. Her voice sounds like honey
The music fades out. Kiss her, you fool! Kiss her! Thankfully, Lucien is not a slave to his base urges, and he does not invade the woman’s space more than he needs to. They depart the stage, and she gathers her bag. Lucien casts an eye to his table. The kids are sitting and talking among themselves. Charlie seems to have recovered, and Danny is trotting to the stage. Lucien recognizes the opening to ‘I Love You, Always, Forever” if he’s ever heard it. Didn’t seem like Danny had much musical talent, either. Oh well, C’est La Vie.
Jean is speaking with her friends, he looks over at his one time companion. She’s holding a napkin in one hand, it has the logo of the bar in one corner and a stain that could be anything from grease to beer in the other. She passes it to him, and there is a note scrawled there in purple gel pen.
‘Lucien –
Hope you had as much fun as I did. Call me xx
Jean B.-
P.S: You owe me a kiss for next time.’
Then her phone number, and a kiss imprint, complete with tiny pink sparkles. He looked up, Jean was nowhere to be seen. Neither were her friends. After a moment, he moved back to the table, and sat back down next to Li.  He put an arm around her shoulders and looked at her list of potential songs. Your eldest daughter only turns eighteen once.
The Ally Coalition's 4th Annual Talent show with Lorde, Jack Antonoff, Kacey Musgraves, and more!
Tumblr media
A few nights before the Grammy Awards, comedians, artists- some past/present Grammy winners and nominees, and a fashion designer came together to put on an epic night for an awesome cause. The Ally Coalition was started by the band fun. (Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, and Andrew Dost) and fashion designer Rachel Antonoff. TAC works with friends in the entertainment, fashion, and music worlds to raise awareness and funds in support of LGBTQ+ equality, to help create safe spaces, and to be a resource to take action.
The 4th annual star-studded talent show included Lorde, Kacey Musgraves, The National, Spoon (Britt Daniel/Alex Fischel), Shamir, Bleachers, Andrew Dost, Phoebe Robinson, Aparna Nancherla, Jacqueline Novak, Mike Birbiglia, and hosted by Rachel Antonoff. It was The Ally Coalition’s biggest talent show yet. The show raised almost $200K (double of last year!), which will go to homeless LGBTQ shelters and local organizations around the country including New Alternatives NYC.
Tumblr media
In times like these, saying that you’re an ally is nice, but not good enough. Be kind to each other and support one another. If the world isn't being inclusive, stand up for all and fight for not just your rights, but the rights of others. We all deserve to be treated equally and love who we want to love. Donate or volunteer for different organizations. Get involved and help in any way you can.
Some highlights from the show included:
Kacey Musgraves unfortunately didn’t bring her karaoke microphone, but she was still amazing and hilarious. She performed two songs “Butterflies” and “Rainbow” that will be on her upcoming album, and her hit “Follow Your Arrow”. After performing she declared, “I’m an ally for fucking life. Hands down. Don’t care what anyone says.”
Tumblr media
Comedians Novak, Birbiglia, and Dope Queen Robinson did sets on about the importance of ordering your own damn fries, some sperm troubles, and a super weird scene in the Kingsman: The Secret Service movie, respectively. Aparna “Beast Mode” Nancherla talked about New York winters and how vaginas are more regulated than guns.
Tumblr media
The National performed three songs including “I Need My Girl” and “Fake Empire.” Spoon beautifully covered John Lennon’s “Isolation." Both bands rocked and were super honored and psyched to be at the show. Mr. co-founder Andrew Dost showed off his piano skills playing some music from an upcoming secret project and covers of Judee Sill’s “Waterfalls” and Harry Nilsson’s “Turn on Your Radio."
Tumblr media
It was also great to have songs performed that were LGBT themed. Shamir started off by saying, “I have a lot of songs about LGBT issues because I’m a part of that alphabet.” And then sang his songs “Straight Boy” and "90's Kids." Kacey’s “Follow Your Arrow” has the lyrics, “Make lots of noise/Kiss lots of boys/Or kiss lots of girl/If that's something you're into.” Bleachers performed “Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)” live for the first time. The song is off of the Jack Antonoff-curated album for the movie Love, Simon- a film about a teenager’s coming out story.
Tumblr media
Bleachers played a heartfelt tribute to Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries. Band member Mikey Hart actually went on tour with The Cranberries making it a little more emotional. They also performed “I Wanna Get Better”, a cover of ELO's “When I Was a Boy," and kicked off the show with the Beatles-esque “Good Morning.”
Ella spoke to the crowd, “We were here [at The Ally Coalition Talent Show] last year, we were doing this, and it was like the first time I’d been on a stage in a long time. I felt very much like I just emerged from our hiding place situation to come and play. I could feel like everyone was just like, ‘Oh my god, it’s her. What is she doing out in the world?’ By that point, we’d written pretty much all of Melodrama and we were just getting ready to finish it up and put it out into the world. And I remember being here last year and thinking like that feeling just felt impossible to even understand- that there would be another record for me. And now there is. We made it together and it’s nice that I can still come here and annoy Jack.”
Tumblr media
Sitting on the piano bench, they performed “Writer in the Dark”, Carly Rae Jepsen (a TAC talent show alumni)’s song “Run Away with Me”, Roy Orbison’s “You Got It”, and “Green Light”. While singing, she pointed to mic to the crowd and everyone sang, “I’m waiting for it, that green light, I want it!” The performance got the only standing ovation of the night. It’s just the magic of Lorde and Jack.
The evening ended with The Ally Coalition Talent Show tradition of inviting everyone back on stage to sing Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way”. The best part of these talent shows is that they’re low-key and chill. They allow the artists to be themselves and vulnerable and appreciative. They are all there to show their talent and help raise funds for LGBT+ youth. It makes you fall in love with new artists and more in love with artists you already love/like.
Tumblr media
You know what’s also cool about bringing all these artists together- not only are we fans of them, they are also fans of each other. Shamir spoke about how excited he was to finally meet Lorde, Aparna, Phoebe, and Kacey. He has even covered Kacey’s “Merry Go ‘Round” in the past. As you watch each performer, you could see the other performers watching from backstage.
Tumblr media
Take the pledge to be an ally with The Ally Coalition and start doing something to make a difference.
Of All the Gifts She Could Have Chosen...
Song for the rest of the story, which I imagine and was listening to while writing most of this is :Go Your Own Way. I listened to the version by Lissie, interestingly the same version that plays in the series when Cat and Kara chat at the bar in Season 1.
Song for the rest of the story, which I imagine and was listening to while writing most of this is :Go Your Own Way. I listened to the version by Lissie, interestingly the same version that plays in the series when Cat and Kara chat at the bar in Season 1.
But I have to admit Fleetwood Mac sings it beautifully as well.
-
Kara has a sort of day off, with Cat springing from one FaceTime call to another, so she decides to go see this town that they've come to, and see what they do here for Christmas. After all, it is Christmas Eve, and Kara’s in a gift giving mood.
Kara spent most of the next day making some very tough decisions. She'd listened to Cat moan and whimper about her for the better part of an hour, so much that she was completely sure by now that Cat wanted this. Cat wanted her, and if the shrieks were any indication, the need was desperate.
Which led Kara to an interesting conundrum of an idea. One she was unbelievably scared to even consider. Was there any hope in her if she actually did this?
As far as she was concerned, her identity was shot if she went through with this. But then again, with the things Cat had said last night, Cat knew who wore that cape already.
Cat would be mad, no? Pissed at her. Not only for her secrets, but the fact that she'd been listening in to all those private thoughts. Kara was convinced of that, most people would be. Cat, Queen of All Media, Kara really knew what Cat could do to her simply with the snap her fingers, so why even consider this brazen idea, Kara wondered as she exited a small coffee shop with a Peppermint Latte.
Kara was considering because she couldn't let herself be happy with seeing Cat come and go daily, knowing exactly what the media mogul thought about. Kara should let it go, but ignoring feelings was never one of Kara’s superpowers.
Truthfully, Kara knew as she slipped into an antique store on 9th Ave, that she wouldn't be able to not do this. And so, the realization that she would do it, scared her more. But not going through with it…
Kara was a very kind hearted person. Help and love we're so high on her list, there wasn't any sadness or anger to be seen. Kara looked through the pieces of jewelry on everything, browsing, and then stopped, her eyes narrowing in on a little silver chain with her trademark House of El crest on it, with a price tag to match the unique jewelry.
Kara gently removed it, considering, and then went to get it, having them package it up neatly in gift wrap and a bow.
By the time Kara was done with her new, albeit odd mission, she had enough things to replicate a wedding proposal of sorts. Well, in this case, more like a Merry Christmas/Forgive Me, proposal.
Kara sat on her bed for a while that night, nervous so much that her fingers were shaking. That was new even to her.But doing this was… well, right now she was here again, listening to Cat speak in her sleep. And well, Kara wasn't quite sure what to do with this.
If she did this, any details that she and Cat still had as a boss/employee would be over. But could she really not go through with it now? Cat clearly wanted her, if any of her dreams were an indication, and now, well…
Tomorrow was Christmas. And maybe it was wrong of Kara to think this was right in any sense, but as far as Kara was concerned, Cat deserved everything she wanted in this world. If that was Supergirl, well, who was Kara to deny her?
Kara couldn't physically deny her. It wasn't doable.
So Kara went. And sat beside Cat. And listened to her talk.
And it took maybe an hour for Kara to finally settle in enough, when Cat had calmed down after a dream that had brought her to a whimpering orgasm in her sleep. And now Cat was asleep still, somewhat of a feat considering the orgasm, and Kara had somehow settled herself onto the bed as well, next to Cat, with the gift box she had bought nestled between them along with white roses beside Cat’s hip.
Kara laid there for a minute, unsure of what to think about this whole thing, her heart pounding by the fact that she'd actually gone this far. Cat was silent now, except for a tiny whimper when Kara had accidentally brushed her arm with the cape. For a while, Kara lay there quietly, actually grabbing the cape and bringing it over her as a makeshift blanket. She wouldn't leave now, and even if she did she knew she'd just return. She was too far in now to ever go back. She just hoped Cat wouldn't be mad.
Would Cat be mad? The resounding answer was yes, of course, absolutely. But something had Kara thinking otherwise.
Kara gasped, trying hard to remain silent, when Cat turned abruptly and pressed herself right up against Kara, hand coming over her waist to tug her closer. Kara swallowed hard, closing her eyes and praying to her gods that Cat wouldn't move. She'd been close all day after just considering this, and now she was right on the edge without any stimulation whatsoever.
Of course, when did things ever go according to plan?
Cat tugged, the cape tightening over her body as Cat pulled, and she bit her own tongue as everything clenched inside her, refusing to make a sound and acknowledge what had literally just happened because of a simple brush, and then Cat’s head was on her chest and Cat was whimpering soft things about dreams coming true and Christmas gifts and Kara looked down just to see Cat’s hand slide back and settle onto the gift packet, hand barely grasping the edges of the bow.
Cat smiled, and sighed deeply into Kara’s neck, and actually kissed barely, and Kara? Well, Kara felt that she might be ever so slightly doomed.
