hi !!! sending this on anon because i am rather nervous all things considered <:3 (i am lying to you, i have not considered 'all things'.) one monster prom fan to another (can we be compared using such broad terminology ? i feel as if i am domesticated compared to you... [compliment, or at the very least not inherently negative]) , i wanted to thank you SO SO SO VERY MUCH for giving miranda so much love and thought and mulling her over in your mind in such a ... refreshing way

i also really really really like miri , but i can only aspire to have your level of dedication . it feels almost like we are of totally different worlds... !!!!!

i cant say that a marine macropredator of a significantly vibrant pink really strikes me as advantageous colouring - does the abyssal environment that you say the merfolk live in negate the need for camouflage and such ????? i apologise for sounding passive aggressive !!!! i am merely asking a question. cocking my head to the side if you will

additionally, i would like to ask something foolish. how do they acquire food? i dont want to say 'hunt', because that might seem insulting. historically were they built for stalking, or high speed chases, or...???? please, talk 'nerdy to me' as they say !!! <- in an entirely normal way befitting two strangers of course.

(also i LOVE her smile!!! you arent anthropomorphizing in the slightest for that - miri often does have very human expressions in a way that's odd for a merfolk, because she effectively got imprinted during her time spent inland... and its politically useful if you smile and match expressions with the people you're trying to work with anyways)

ill also go ahead and answer your questions because i can! very easily clarify on them!

the color: actually, being bright red and pink is actually very common for deep sea animals, due to the way light works at depth! its why i decided miranda was abyssal, because that felt like the most natural way to explain why she's pink, since it's such an uncommon color in nature.

basically, different colors of light have different lengths! red is the shortest wavelength of light, and blue is the longest. water might be clear, but there's a lot of water in the ocean, and the more water you add, the more it filters out light - which is why the bottom of a pool might be dark and shady, but if you hold a little of the water in your hands there's no shade. the ocean is a lot deeper than a pool, and so it gets darker as you go down, but because it's also clear, it doesn't filter out all that light at the same rate.

red, being the shortest wavelength of light, gets filtered out first, so red often gets quickly darker the deeper down you go, until it's completely black! camouflage is dependent on the environment, so their color and brightness has to match the background, but it also depends on the light that's hitting the animal. it's why fawns have dappled spots, or animals might have black stripes, so they can mimic the light of their environment. and when your environment has no red light, well... red's a pretty good color to be!

because of this, a lot of animals in the deep sea can't actually see red either, which is doubly the reason why you might want to be red! think of it like tigers, and how ungulates often can't see their orange, making them look just about the same color as the foliage around them when they're hunting! miranda might stick out on land, but that's just because we aren't seeing her in the environment she's made for, where she blends in with everything else around her as much as a pure black animal.

(it's also why her bioluminescence is blue - blue is the longest wavelength of light, and the one most animals can see at that depth. if she lights up, then she wants to be seen, and she can even alter her silhouette to appear larger or smaller or breaking it up into multiple shapes if she needs to. it's why her tapetum lucidum is blue when light's shone on it, because there is blue light to be seen at depth, it's just very dim!)

(this is also why giant squid are bright red, and why the stoplight loosejaw fish is so special! the latter actually produces its own red light, and can see red light, which means that it has a secret light that won't reveal where it is but will reveal to it where its prey is!)

food: this is something that depends a lot, because there are actually multiple different species of merfolk, which is mostly my fault because i don't always feel like i communicate this the best. they're all slightly different in how they evolved to capture prey, with abyssals in particular being fuckoff huge ambush predators that attack from below, and others being shallower-water hunters or more adapted for smaller, faster prey - but they all evolved from an ancestor with a fairly consistent prey-capture method.

in short, all merfolk are ancestrally evolved to hunt whales and other large prey items, with all the extant species still holding at least a degree of this. primarily, they were ambush predators who were good at getting in close to their prey before a sudden burst of speed. they would work together in close-knit groups (one of the big pressures for their increasing socialization and larger brains, to coordinate such groups) to all mob a single prey item at once, hitting with force to cause sudden trauma, and then using their claws, double-thumbs, back feet, and mouths to hold onto their prey and refuse to be dislodged. they'd repeatedly claw and use their strong bites and massive heads to rip deeply into their prey, causing further massive trauma and shock, and if that failed, bleeding their prey to death.

think of it like the raptor prey restraint model, just further taking advantage of the fact that they were underwater, where no one else has hands that could potentially rip them off. being smaller and somewhat less-optimized for marine life compared to things like sharks and whales and large fish worked for them, because they had a novel adaptation that allowed them to take advantage of things no one else could, and the numbers to make up for it. this is, likewise, why they never lost their hands and fully developed flippers, instead making their limbs as flipper-like as possible to make up for it.

then as time went on and certain populations became separated from each other, they adapted for slightly different niches, but all remain fairly closely related to each other as a genus.

in the modern day, most merfolk don't really "hunt" for all of their meals, at least not in the same way that we might think. don't get me wrong, they still absolutely hunt and it's a larger part of their lives than it is for most humans, but they have options.

mostly, the merfolk theory for their relationship with nature is to invite it in. this is not to say they aren't controlling and pruning it, but they do live underwater, and it's far harder to keep animals out than it is on land, so merfolk accepted it and worked with it. they'll work to promote growth around their buildings and where they live, fostering the growth of sea grass and algae and coral and other sessile animals, encouraging them to set down and grow in these areas, and they'll then let more wild animals move in, further encouraged by these natural sources of food and shelter, on top of merfolk working even further to encourage them in. they serve as a functional cleanup crew for the merfolk in these settlements, being allowed to eat anything that merfolk might drop or go to waste, and even moreso might be purposefully fed at times, or have specific homes for them built. merfolk will keep encouraging them and taking care of them until they become a biorich hotspot, creating unique oasises for wildlife to live alongside merfolk.

however, this isn't just a free-for-all, persay. merfolk will also purposefully prune these populations and control how they form, often removing "problem" animals and encouraging certain behaviors which makes it easier for these populations to live alongside merfolk, not viewing them as a threat, but also not viewing them as an opportunity either. they will directly shape how these areas grow and cultivate them on a physical level, often using them as an easy shortcut to literally grow their settlements and buildings. but they will also harvest from these populations and selectively breed them, until their cities and towns act as massive public gardens full of food to be caught, picked, and eaten at any time

as there are also a lot of (very politically powerful) nomadic groups, they also do this, albeit not always so directly. they'll have specific shoals or "runs" of fish that they will follow behind and take care of, managing as they move through the ocean in accordance with the seasons. this is where the whales still factor in, because the nomadic groups will also take care of the whales, purposefully keeping an eye on their pods and taking care of them and, when the time comes, being choosy and particular in which whale they select at any given time to be hunted, harvested, and eaten.

(there's also the way in which food is distributed and managed throughout the merkingdom, since some food is indeed shipped and moved throughout the different areas, but that's a different story for another time and i've talked enough)

aa so peacock mantis shrimps are my favorite animal ever

theyre these really cool crustaceans

and theyre currently mostly known for having the most color cones (16) of all known animals on earth

color cones btw are these things in your eyes that let you see different colors. humans have 3, red green and blue, that combine to let us see all the colors that we can

(little tangent here but the genes for color receptors are stored in the x chromosome in humans, which is why amab people are much more likely to be colorblind, since afab people have an extra set. also in some rare cases people with xx chromosomes can actually have an extra color cone, though there hasnt been much research into how much more color they can see)

also! mantis shrimps have the most complex eyes in the entire animal kingdom, and they can move their eyes independently from one another :3

ok back to the color thing

since mantis shrimps have so many color cones, (btw its 12 to 16 depending on the species, peacock mantis shrimps have 16) they can see past human's color range, so they can see ultraviolet and infrared, but they also can see more colors within our visual light spectrum that we cant really see

but the really interesting thing is, despite seeing all these different colors, theyre actually not very good at distinguishing between colors, because they can see polarized light

they can also change the color of their bodies to camouflage like chameleons, but they also use their colors to communicate with one another :3

another interesting thing is, before mantis shrimps color receptors were discovered, the previous top of that category was bluebottle butterflies, which have 15 receptors. but even then, mantis shrimps were like, still silly little guys that people somewhat knew about, and thats because of their fighting.

they are pretty territorial creatures (i believe they mostly live in reefs, shores and tropical areas) and they fight with each other using their claws. they are REALLY good with their claws. peacock mantis shrimps punches have been measured to around 50 mph, which is like the speed of a 22 caliber bullet. and they punch hard enough to break human bones :3

their names are purely based off of other animals

And yeah like! This is a good point!

He's built to camouflage and stalk through the plants for an ambush. But what he'd rather do is give himself away on purpose, so whatever he's chasing is inclined to flee, and then gives chase while still hiding from them (so he does get to chase em) but his target does not know where the hell he is. Eventually they either falter or get cornered somewhere into thinking theyre safe and that's when he comes out from probably the last place they were expecting. So technically what he does in these instances IS chase :)

I will say though even if this is not always the case and sometimes he will just surprise someone out of nowhere, it's not really boring because he still gets to feel a sense of superiority about it. And he does just get to chase people on land too a fair amount so that would make up for any non-chases.

Honestly... now that I'm thinking about it it's not unlikely that he'd purposefully start to chase someone on land and make them flee into the water to think theyre safe before he goes into leviathan form and pulls the light show trick

THANK YOUTH ANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING!!! I LOVE ANSWERING OCTOPUS QUESTIONS (read more bc long)

Octopus diets mostly consist of crabs/lobsters, clams, snails, smaller fish (including sharks), and sometimes other octopuses. To help them get to the flesh inside of the hard-shelled animals, the octopus uses their beak to drill a hole inside the shell, then they release a venom that relaxes the muscles so the shell opens, then paralyzes the animal in that state so it can't run away. This is a really interesting part to me; for certain prey species, octopuses have learned to always drill in the same spot on the shell to get to the 'target muscle,' basically where the most flesh is. It allows them to get as much venom as possible into their prey to make it easier to relax, then paralyze them! If the shell is too hard to drill into, the octopus will use its powerful suckers to pry it open; just one large sucker of a Giant Pacific has the strength to lift 25 pounds, they're very strong.

Speaking of the beak itself; it's very parrot-like, and it's extremely sharp, used for eating prey as mentioned, and it's also retractable. Octopuses have something called a hydrostatic skeleton, it has no bones but is an empty cavity that gets filled with water. Because water can't be compressed, the octopus uses it to apply force or change shape (muscular contraction.) It's sort of similar to how our tongue works, but I think a comparison both of us understand is the zipper muscles that Ardeans have lol. They concentrate water in a certain muscle to make that area move, if it makes any sense. It's very cool, and this flexible skeleton allows them to compress themselves into any space that is larger than their solid beak!

Predators of octopuses are sharks, seals, sea otters, and eels. Octopuses primarily use camouflage and ink to get away; they'll shoot a cloud of ink from their siphon, which is made from a combination of mucus and melanin, and it contains chemicals, one of which has been seen to actually relax predators. This means that the predator, if it still sticks around the octopus, is less likely to attack it and might just leave it be. However, the ink itself also chokes whoever lets too much of it get into their gills, and this leads to a lot of deaths when octopuses are kept in small containers to be transferred to aquariums. They'll ink in self-defense because they're stressed, and then have nowhere to escape.

Also, related to predators; when an octopus gets its arm bitten off, that arm can continue to function for up to a day after being separated from the main body! In fact, it will continue trying to do all of its main functions; it will attempt to hunt, and if it finds prey, it will bring it up to where the mouth is supposed to be. This is because 2/3 of an octopuses' neurons are found in the arms, allowing each arm to act independently of the main brain, making decisions without even letting the octopus know what it's doing. This ability to function independently of the body is really helpful; an octopus can use four of its arms to explore a cave for a potential den, while the other four can go on hunting! Octopus arms also regenerate really quickly, in just 2-4 months, and unlike animals like chameleons that regenerate tails that aren't nearly as good as the original, regenerated octopus arms grow back almost identical to the original!

Octopuses change color using tiny pigment sacs dotted all over their skin called chromatophores. These pigment sacs are attached to muscle cells, and when those muscles contract, the sacs stretch and absorb more light, then reflect that light back in different wavelengths (there are explanations out there that make much more sense than what i just said gkfsbvsjgk, but basically it just means expanded pigment sac = color being more visible). They have a LOT of chromatophores, and allows for a very wide range of coloration. Those muscle cells contracting also allow them to change their texture, creating projections of varying sizes called papillae!

The corrected plural is technically octopodes, though barely anybody actually uses that, and octopuses is also correct and much more popular. It's because the word octopus is derived from Greek, and so the proper ending would be "odes", but when octopus was adopted into English, it was just given an English word ending, making octopuses. Octopi is the most common but not right because it's a plural for a Latin word, but octopus is originally Greek so it doesn't really work (use whatever u want tho i barely understand it myself)

It’s been a while since I read their book, but what’s your Beast from the East like? And would giving them a head pat mean certain death because I really want to give them head pats.

SO MY BEASTS!! They are typically upright on their hind legs but when running, theyre on all fours. They typically switch, and when on their hind legs look like this:

When they stand on their hind legs they reach up to 8ft tall, and can move up to 40 mph while running on all fours.

Depending on the level of the beast, they have more or less markings:

Depending on your level you get prominent light stripes on your forehead, and when you're level 5 which is the maximum level a beast can be, you get a thick stripe on the bottom of your chin, so you have four strips on your forehead and a strip on your chin. You also get more stripes covering your body the higher level you are, this is because of better more skilled camouflage. Along with that, you get more abilities: LVL. 1: Nothing, you're a baby beast essentially, you're starting out, it's probably your first game. NO DEATHS OCCUR AT LEVEL ONE. It usually just starts with you and some of your other friends LVL. 2: You're starting out at the big leagues now, you can compete in the tribe competition and you can now challenge creatures in your territory to the game. If that creature isn't another beast, you can kill and eat it LVL. 3: You're considered good but not the best. A lot of beats stop when they reach this level. You also unlock low - level limited time cloning. You should really only do this for good tactics LVL. 4: You're high leveled now, considered to be very very skilled and you're respected. These beasts are typically older as well, and often train level 1 and some level 2 players. You also get the ability to turn invisible for a short amount of time LVL. 5: They're the most respected members in their community, and they're typically elders. Yo i think Sumeru may be my favorite region. I dont have a favorite region yet (altho Liyue always feels like home) but looking at some of the preview of the update on Hoyoverse and also just. The fact that we've had so little information about Dendro as an element...

Also. Look how pretty the oculus is!!

I'm always a sucker for plants and Dendro's whole thing of course is. Plant. So like. A win.

The two enemies shown in the Hoyoverse preview look so neat. The electro Reginsivine is something I didnt realize we didn't have, so having it here is gonna be so cool. It looks sharp and badass but also just really pretty.

The terrorshroom..... I want to pet it. I need to be friends with one. We haven't gotten to ride anything yet except the waveriders and uuuuuuuh I just think it would be neat. Its free real estate, yanno?

Two new artifact sets are both beautiful. I'm not much of an artifact farmer or anything like that and these aren't really much of an exception unless Collei needs them, but theyre so pretty and as I receive them from, yanno, runnin' around and doing the domains or whatever, I'll be glad to admire them.

Its also interesting that both artifacts have names to do with memory and dreams. Hmm.

The weapons........ are so pretty. I have never really wished on the 5* weapon banner, and I dont really think I will this time even, as I'm intending to save for Kokomi. That being said, if I save enough primos and wishes... I may be interested. But its unlikely.

4* weapon set is also gorgeous!!!

I would love to use these and so I hope that as I wish, they all eventually come home. They're really pretty though. I dont think I've ever really noticed there were sets of weapons like this before. Are there other sets and im just oblivious? Probably. Thats ok.

And the new characters from Sumeru being released are all gorgeous, the three here included. Of course, im frustrated that a region based on the Middle East area doesn't have more characters with darker skin tones, and I also don't love that the lighter characters are colonizers that accuse the darker characters (natives of the land) of idk misusing the land or like just being in general of bad moral and character.

Dori looks super fun, I think she must be a teen-aged size. I feel like she's gonna be sassy. I love some good sass. And I can't perfectly tell but is she a catalyst? Either way, super neat.

Collei and Tighnari are both gorgeous designs as well, and I like that they're both mostly simple. I like the flow and the colors. It makes sense, as they're part of the forest ranger groups, and would need camouflage. I'm 90% sure I'm not going to wish for Tighnari, as Collei will be our free Dendro and so far hes just not that interesting to me. Even if he's interesting in game play and story, Kokomi has evaded me twice now and I could really use her on my team, mostly for some variety outside of Zhongli, so. Unless I have plenty of primos and wishes for Koko on the last day of his banner, I won't wish for him. I'm at 60 pity so the next ten-pull i may get a 5* and I dont want to win 50/50 on Tighnari. Will I regret not pulling for him? Potentially. But thats a bridge to cross for another day and Koko is someone I passed up on her first banner and since then I've wanted her. So bad.

Overall, im super excited for Sumeru and the next act in the Traveler's story. I'm excited to meet the archon and all the other people in Sumeru, not to mention exploring the gorgeous region and get the hang of the new reactions, element, and enemies.

On my way home, I wanted to share some theories I have on shiny Pokémon and why they exist

Some of my most recent catches, a Morelul I named pumpkin and a Combee called acacia, both shiny and caught wild, started me thinking more on shiny Pokémon and their roles in their respective species.

I used to take this lil backwoods walk after school that wasn't well walked at all, and I passed by a shit ton of morelul on the way. They camouflage pretty well but if you know what they look like they're easy to spot. Which got me thinking.

Morelul rely on camouflage to survive predators in areas where there isn't enough space for one to evolve into a shiinotic to protect the gathering. Usually if it's a big enough territory, one or two of the Morelul will train to evolve into shiinotic, so that they're bigger and scarier to predators, and have access to a wider array of moves to defend themselves. If they don't have the space in the territory to do this, however, camouflage will have to do.

See, If there's a ton of of mushrooms with bright colours that glow, predator Pokémon don't trust it, since those types of mushrooms are poisonous. But if one of the mushrooms is out of place, glowing the wrong colour or even unable to glow at all, it'd clue in the predator Pokémon that it's not real mushrooms there, but Pokémon, meaning okay to eat. This becomes a danger to the gathering, so when a shiny Pokémon occurs in their midst, they banish it from the gathering. The shiny Morelul would be left to fend for themselves.

So it makes sense that eventually I came across pumpkin, granted it was several years into taking the same route over and over again and seeing the same gathering of Morelul over and over again. They're not very long-lived Pokémon, really. Mushrooms live for a while but Pokémon, especially very small ones, have a fairly short lifespan.

Acacia was interesting, too. He's my most recent catch. I've been working at a little cafe over the summer which is in a combeekeeping society charity thing, so they have some hives a small walk away from the cafe.

Now, something you might not know that I've only learned since working there is that shiny Combee produce weird honey. Their darker colour means that the honey theyre made of and produce is also darker, and it has a reddish hue, much like the Pokémon themselves. It tastes stronger, has more of that distinct Honey taste, but it's also a lot lower in protein for some reason, and a lot thicker.

Not a lot of papers on pollinator Pokémon go into Combees specifically, but as far as I can tell, Combees hate thick honey. It's harder to digest, is more prone to temperature changes, and to them, it just tastes weird. An experiment on wild hives in Paldea a good few years back showed that, even if the honey was only coloured artificially, the Combees actively avoided it.

Combees don't like red honey.

So, when one of the hive is producing a red honey, it's realistic to assume that they'd be tossed out for the betterment of the hive.

I got to observe this first-hand about three weeks back. It was super rainy, the end of my shift, so I got to do my favourite job of the shift, which is to bring the compostable good waste over to the garden of the cafe and chuck it in the compost bin. I like watching the Pokémon start at it. It's usually bug types, sometimes grass, and once I saw an araquanid on a rainy day like this one.

But this day I saw a Combee. Not weird, considering they fly about tins. We see a ton of beedrill, too. They're not as aggressive as they come across on cartoons and in shows, they're sweethearts, really.

But under heavy rainfall isn't a place that Combees like to be. And he looked upset. I went back inside, got him some sugar water, and he all but flung himself into my arms.

He got a bit sick afterwards, but a quick trip to the pokecenter fixed him right up, and he's doing well hanging out with me :)

Plus the darker and stronger honey is great for me bc I don't care about the nutrients I just prefer the taste of darker honey. It's not even that much thicker, I put it in tea, so it thins out real quick for me. And now I have a new buddy :D

But yeah, shiny Pokémon are weird. I'm almost home. I have some more thoughts about shinies and my theories on them, so I'll write a little smth once I grab my takeaway and get settled in for the night.

Theyre all part of the same crew :)

Chirimoya Li-Liang is a young man from the Long Arm Tribe. He’s a skilled navigator, and as a person he’s earnest in his efforts and a little serious, but he’s also a pretty defensive if you poke fun at him, which is a little annoying. (Loosen up, longarm-boy...) He doesnt want anyone to know that he really likes corny romance novels. His imagination is very specific, and he would talk to people on public transportation.

Li-Liang ate the Tree-Tree Fruit (Paramecia) and became a Tree Man. He is an anona tree (also known as anoneira or chirimoya) His powers arent very useful in a fight, but it’s fine since he knows like kung fu and shit. the fruits he bears from his transformed limbs can give you several boosts, like more strength, stamina, and they can even have healing properties. if you have a cold he can probably help you, but to bear good fruit he can’t be malnourished or depressed... if he is they come out dried up and pathetic. He can also turn into an actual tree of varying size for camouflage.

Sango Lua is a white-shark fishwoman. She has all the natural abilities of fishmen and has trained herself to have absurd brute strength. She has the Conqueror’s Haki, but can’t control it yet. She’s a hardcore party girl and suffers because her crewmates really aren’t.

Lua has the manner of a very feminine person, and likes cute things, but would crush cockroaches with her bare hands. She’s lighthearted but very stubborn and adamant about what she wants, even if it causes other people trouble.

Lua has a very beautiful voice, although thats usually more associated to mermaids (: Her hobbies include collecting DenDen Mushi and messing around with Tone Dials.

Velásquez Sorolla is the eldest member of this crew, and a great swordsman. A long time ago she was lauded as the very best, but she mysteriously disappeared for nearly 30 years, and everyone thought she was dead. She only returned to piracy now, so her ‘wanted’ poster is very outdated. Also, she’s a great cook!

She’s got a loud boisterous laugh and she’s sly, but has a melancholic demeanor and often looks out at the sea with a sad type of longing. You know, like old people do right ? Right ? They all do that right ? Aha? Nothing could have possibly happened in her past,

Sorolla actively avoids fighting other skilled swordsmen so she can have her adventure in relative peace, without gaining annoying rivals who will chase her forever until she fights them. She desperately wants anonymity but dresses flashily and in a way people would recognize her.

She hails from Dressrosa and originally was going to be a dancer, but swordsmanship caught her interest. (: Her matador/estoque-type sword is pretty much made out of sea-stone, to fight against devil-fruit users.

By necessity some time long ago, the creature you adored now more than any hadn't made the best of first impressions. Creeping from the forest on eight legs trembling worse than leaves he ducked beneath, the drider hesitated several feet before you, pedipalps tucked tight to his abdomen.

Though not the only drider in your company, the camouflage patterns to his darker fur mesmerised you. For how terribly uneasy he was that day - his hand soft in yours, fingers slender and shaking in the briefest of introductions - he hadn't faltered since.

The grace and balance of maneuvering such a large frame enthralled you into admiring him at any opportunity - always endeavouring to without him noticing, though you were certain he had. When his four, glinting eyes crinkled with a smothered mirth, you hid your stares.

It was a curse and blessing that for many weeks, your relationship remained one constrained by professionalism. You worked together brilliantly in discussing plans for sharing land sought after by those in towns and cities, and those living in the woods. With input from those on either perspective, there were tensions.

Until Keir understood you sided with him, not wishing for anyone to be displaced. His proposal was one ensuring everyone retained a fair share, and when he turned to you during his presentation - an attempt to persuade you, his mandibles slackened.

"Really," you said, smothering your laugh as he only swallowed. "I support this. I do."

It felt like it was the first time he looked at you.

Come next morning, Keir brought a warm drink for you - your favourite, and from that day, free time passed together. Where you before enjoyed lunch amongst other colleagues, you preferred the peace of only eating with Keir.

Your working relationship became something more through a blurring of lines.

Before you needed to complain of your exhaustion, gentle touches would comfort you, easing the pain of stress between your temples. When Keir needed to rest his legs after supporting him all day, he would curl at your side, cheek resting against your shoulder.

Travelling together blurred boundaries impossibly more. He remained ever patient through your unsubtle staring, and on a long journey he smiled slightly.

"You can say what's on your mind," he murmured, eyelashes fluttering as he blinked away a light sleep. "You have questions."

Too many to speak of, and he indulged you in all. The journey became a learning experience for each of you; Keir demonstrated how to cradle the delicate webbing often pooling beneath him in sleep, and you helped him learn how to play guitar, an instrument he had a natural affinity for.

Sometimes, he pretended not to, seeking your help, and you would press your bodies tight together, arms against his in explaining the strings once more.

This trip was longer than any other and after the cramped travel, Keir retired sooner to your shared room, the hotel only having the one vacancy when booked.

"Keir?"

Soft humming greeted you. Surrounded by a great expanse of webbing glittering in the late sunlight, the drider was in his element, such a unique sight you were left speechless. It spanned from wall to wall - in place of any beds.

"Oh," he breathed. "I'm sorry. We never share, I... I forgot."

By the depth to the webbing, it was larger than any he had created for himself before, as though made for two. Keir looked down when you reached out, his mandibles chittering when the webbing pulled.

"Do you want to share with me?"

"On my web?"

This time, you didn't hide your smile. "In your arms, too."

Drabble

Times traveling apart were rarer with how important your work was. When Keir returned into the dark forest after parting goodbyes or you venturing into the city further than he was comfortable with, though it stung in the moment - watching your love fade from the sight, their face blurring, it never hurt long. No matter how distanced, knowing your boyfriend was waiting to reunite helped.

From sharing the night together, your relationship blossomed naturally. That night, you discovered how a drider's web reacted to the softer skin of a human, how it clung to your frame as you woke tucked close to Keir, bound tight. For such a new relationship, you spared no time before returning to that position - bodies entwined, Keir experimenting with spinning softer threads to have your body positioned to his liking.

Those memories remained with you so clearly when apart, as sweet as those made beyond a bed.

While you continued to help Keir with the guitar (though how much you helped over hindering was a mystery), he taught you how to hunt, how to scavenge.

Your initial appraisal held true - that of admiring his grace. It extended beyond the forest planes when you found an iced over lake, one frozen thick enough not to splinter beneath you. Webbing shone on his legs in his excitement.

Those dates, however sweet, paled against the thrill of reuniting. Keir always arrived first to prepare the room for your stay. With your bags resting in the doorway, your boyfriend pressed close, mandibles nipping at your sensitive nape. He coaxed you into his elaborately woven trap with gentle kisses.

"Missed you," he whispered, speaking softly as you shivered. "How long do we have?"

Little more than a fortnight before moving on, but you couldn't speak as you arched into the clinging webbing. Slender fingers peeled your clothes back until you were aching and warmed by soft fur to your back.

"Long enough," you said, "for us to have some fun."

The slick of his emerging length nudged against your back. "Fun, hey?"

Hand curled into your hip to steady you, Keir began to grind himself against your thighs. He stroked over your twitching cock and sighed when you managed to turn to steal a soft kiss, the first always the sweetest after so long apart.

IDK I THINK I JUST DOCUMENTED THIS PART CUZ I WAS STILL SCREAMING you cant expect me to have very useful things to say at this point

This part really stood out to me, it’s an attitude I feel like wwx implies with his inner narration a few times but most clearly says here: he’s not one for allowing himself to exaggerate how bad his circumstances are/could be even a little bit - he’s already lived through some extreme low points and found a way to keep going, so he never makes sweeping statements about what he couldn’t live without (Inner JingYi: you’re supposed to say you’d be lost without him here!!!) Instead he seems to accept as a given that being alive doesn’t guarantee him any pleasantness or joy at all, and as a result his feelings toward being in TRUE LOVE are surprisingly pragmatic, but also colored with such gratitude. There are a lot of things in the novel that struck me, like this, as being just a little to the left of familiar tropes/sentiments, and were more touching for it. Whether it be the influence of culture difference as opposed to what I’m used to reading in most western romance stories, or MXTX’s unique outlook, or a combination of both, it was really refreshing and made me pause over it. Not “I can’t imagine living without you” but “I could be living without you, but instead I get to be with you and I think that’s the best thing that could happen.”

ahh... it’s a really good story. JGY is a great character. One of the most interesting differences for me between drama watching vs. novel reading experience is that without an actor to bat his vulnerable doe eyes at you and smile faintly with his cute dimples, the book does not go much out of its way to try to lull the reader into a false sense of security around him or *endear* him to you the way the show does. But just by seeing events through wei wuxian’s POV, its still enough to evoke pity or understanding towards him. The overall impression is a bit more detached though, there’s less emphasis on the spectacle of how he could manipulate everyone closest to him and more of a general feeling of resigned tragedy that everyones the worst on this bitch of an earth.

HAHAHA oh no this man ain’t making it to immortality thats for damn sure. HE’S JUST GONNA TRY AS HARD AS HE CAN HIS WHOLE LIFE NOT TO LOOK AT HIM BUT THEYRE *MARRIED* SDLKFJSF ohhhh it’s too funny, like... the mundane domestic family drama IN the fantastical swords and sorcery setting is what really ratchets up these things from amusing to fucking hilarious I think

aaaa the end... final random thoughts? No not final, I would like to please keep discussing at length and exhaustively, all the time please - CQL has gotta be one of the best TV adaptations I’ve seen. ANY adaptation of anything would be lucky to be so good!! reading the novel has just made me appreciate it even more.

- I don’t think I can do justice to what I find most fascinating about comparing the two versions briefly, to do that I need to get drunk and ramble at my friends for hours but... the condensed version is something like this. Really all the significant differences between the two versions (besides the ones which can be attributed to censorship and therefore aren’t worth discussing) are a side effect of the structure of how the story is told - there’s barely anything changed arbitrarily. Aside from having a cold opening, the drama sticks to a very linear version of the story, and I think for a TV show or film, that’s probably the best way to do it. We see everything, we get shocked and tricked and betrayed and surprised along with the characters, we feel the biggest impact at the climactic scenes having experienced all the build-up. The novel on the other hand is not only much more non-linear in WHEN we learn bits and pieces of information, but that information is also obfuscated under wei wuxian’s multiple layers of Unreliable Narratoritis, which are as follows: 1) difficulty remembering things because of personality/avoiding painful memories/actual memory loss, 2) No Homo Goggles still on, and 3) a wry sense of humor that makes the reader unsure of how much they can trust his attitude toward things, especially near the beginning. The experience of reading is a puzzle the reader has to mentally piece together through all of the above listed camouflage, and the puzzle itself is a three-sided mystery: One - How Bad of a guy was Wei WuXian really, and how exactly did all the bad stuff in his life go down; Two - wangxian epic pride & prejudice gambits; Three - political murder mystery. (I love stories like this btw... though I fully admit I’m glad I watched first this time bc it might have taken me a long time to tackle otherwise.) Because of this, where the drama wants to pull you in and submerge you in all the most potent emotional parts, the novel in direct contrast deliberately side-steps around these things and asks that you hurt yourself by filling in the blanks. In fact the more intense emotions and painful memories involved, whether it be his relationship with jiang yanli, his DEATH, the darkest days of war times etc, the more the novel evasively withholds details. I actually really like both styles of storytelling but each one is obviously way better suited to its medium. ANYWAY.... THATS BASICALLY WHERE MY BRAINS AT WHILE IM READING GAY SWORD WIZARD BOOKS

- The extras are so saturated with domestic married bliss that it’s a good thing I stopped taking pictures because I’d just take a picture of every page. this is too much for me to take... I did jump the gun a few times and read a few fanfics while I was still mid-read of the book (I tried to hold out but alas I am mortal) and at one point after finishing I was like “wow what fic was it in where lwj says something cute and wwx kisses him in public but they’re in the corner of the restaurant so no one really sees... OH NO WAIT that was actually in there.” and ... and that’s the LEAST OF IT... *stares into the distance* theyre married wow

- I ofc couldn’t help but see a few vague blogs beforehand so honestly I was braced for something like, wildly ooc for the sake of porn to happen in the extras... I definitely appreciate how the incense burner porn interludes could be uhhh a lot for many people and not my personal cup of tea in terms of smut however [here follows the words of a poisonous frog who has dwelt her whole life in the rainforests of BL] the concept is also surprisingly SWEET SDFLKJF like wwx sees lan wangji’s darkest mixed-up violent teenage fantasies and he’s just like aww babe you had a crush on me!! just... good for them

idk what to think of it knowing all of it now. i feel like i understand so much & also absolutely nothing at the same time. like. so that world is both falling apart and not at the same time until they're observing it, then its dying, disappearing. would it be okay if they forgot about it, stopped onserving it, left it alone? would it continue to fall to all the disasters? is it even possible to save them in the first place? although that line about the old world continuing in a "triodal direction". thats basically a donut, so its just happening all over again?? that stuff about camouflage, is any of it really happening? what parts of the bg info are from the teachers perspective and what from the scientists? surely she died but whats in what world. do they have their own people on the other world are they affecting it from there?? are they just simply viewing it?? but they have to be interacting in some way if theyre trying to save it... the giant moon they said they saw. is that before that world disappeared like a signal of the end or is that a consequence of letting it die again?

BUT ALSO i have. made a connection. the kanji that start parts in aru sekai. it starts with past, which would make sense i guess, bUt kyuuyaku starts with the same kanji & in the video this is emphasized to the point it covers the screen repeatedly for a second. so i would think. kyuuyaku is the description of this "past". which could mean, if im right, any future songs would start with, or at least have, the other kanji in the title ( 終, 凹, 封, 命, 十, 盲, 永) & would elaborate on thise parts of aru sekai. aru sekai & kyuuyaku are definitely connected & talking about the same content just different parts of it. kyuuyaku more so talking about the extent of the damage its self and the "promise" here is probably the scientists deciding to do what it takes to save it.

if i were to guess 「今刻んだ」 is probably referring to the connection with "that" world meaning its gone, theyve lost it. 「今拓いた」 would then be them working to reconnect with it, or reopening the path to "that" world. 「対自核は/繰り返した」 the first part here is supposed to be read as fractal & the nature of fractals is repeating so that makes sense but im thinking maybe its also a metaphor for "that" world, the infinite possibilities ending in essentially the same result, or no matter how they interact with "that" world the end is inevitable.

i also think in regards to kyuuyaku it's interesting that the "mata ashita" gets cut off, but its not just replacing the ta for the begining of the next word. the end kanji is different, making it incomplete, like if you were interrupted from writing it, or perhaps a computer glitch. so im thinking the first "good bye see you tomorrow" is from someone in "that" world, that it ended before they could finish. maybe theyre aware of the people on the outside trying to help i dont know. the second goodbye see you tomorrow is complete. its a full sentence and its sung as one of the longest notes. which makes me think rather than ur casual farewell its meant as "we'll do the same thing tomorrow/continue to try tomorrow". not to mention on of the first lines is about waiting for tomorrow. maybe they only get one try per day? maybe thats how long it takes to establish a connetion.

☆ NEEKO. iiim admittedly still working on her tangled verse cause she’s a chameleon but pls love my lesbian chameleon girl she deserves the world tbh ?? she’s extremely sweet despite her entire tribe being destroyed && killed && she FELT every single bit of it && felt her people fade away. she’s pure sunshine but she WILL fight when she has to, when there’s no other option or when people with good sho’ma are endangered. she’s looking to make a new tribe for herself now -- made up of everyone, not just oovi-kat, so she really takes in everyone who she can && who is willing. she can shapeshift by extending her sho’ma to other’s sho’ma which is a sort of spiritual essence && she can borrow their appearance, gain current emotional state && recent memories to better camouflage as them && immediately kno friend from foe so i think it’d be rly neat tbh for cass to encounter that ?? plus with neeko she wouldn’t have to open up too much or have to fight to express her emotions or voice them since neeko can feel && sense && taste emotion -- they have colours && tastes to her. she can also split herself into two, sending out a clone of herself while she becomes invisible && has a lot of floral / plant based magic as well so i think she’d rly vibe with ur cass portrayal !! but tbh she’s very chipper upbeat && kinda rapunzely personality wise -- she’s just very curious about the world && wants to learn everything since she was from a magical tribe that isolated themselves from the world, so for hundreds of years she’s literally ONLY known her tribe && their home && it’s EXTREMELY different from the world ?? she’s so used to not physically speaking && just extending sho’ma && reading emotions from each other, so she struggles with communication && that can frustrate her sometimes, but she’s knows emotions && she can see past like faking things or past all those walls she’s got up !! it’d be neat...theyd be....cute tbh... i rambled too much but i just rly love neeko sm n if u wanna kno more about her or any of these u can ask too !! also...not for nothing but neeko rly rly loves n swoons for strong badass ladies !!

☆ KINDRED. kindred is literally just...y’kno...death, the grim reaper whatever u wanna call them !! they’re as old as the concept of death && started as one man who cleaved himself in two so he’d have a friend -- they understand the deep pain of loneliness despite having each other now because they were born from loneliness. they’d sense that from her && i think there’s plenty of times she could have met them, when death was near to her or around her && theyre certainly not entirely happy about her resurrection. they’re easily translatable into any verse but they are very ethereal && magical && love to play with people. so anything considering death. near death or perhaps just running into them if cass happens near a particularly brutal bandit robbery about to take place on the road that ultimately she wont be able to stop even if they tell her about it :’)

☆ AMITY. she’s a little witch !! in her tangled verse she’s still a witch but she && her family are more in hiding about their powers && school so they’re all hidden away but amity’s family is a very, very noble family with a lot of money && power -- which extends to magic too lol. but it’d be Neat to meet cass n like amity looking up to her ?? she’s a lot like cass tbh, pretentious mean girl type who is rly rly icy n mean n sassy on the outside but she’s soft inside she just CANNOT show weakness n she oof is rly oppressed by her family n standards set for her n she ALSO has a crush on a sunshine girl who happens to be human. n she reads to younger kids n helps them out she’s softe secretly...just has a lot of pressure on her -- her parents wont let her hang around witches with lesser talent either. they’d get along i think after like tension but she’s just a lil teen witch n needs a good strong role model but she could also help cass out with the whole magic thing ykno ??

☆ AKALI. hehehee akali n cass would be hilarious at first i swear it -- they’re both headstrong, stubborn && sassy tbh. she’s from an order of acolytes that try to keep the balance of the spiritual / magical realm && the outside realms; she was raised in it && her mother && father were higher ups && very powerful in the order -- her father died in an attack led by her master’s friend on the order && they had to flee && try to remake with smaller ranks when she was very young. she succeeded her mother as the fist of the shadow but could not vibe with the way her master wasn’t taking action like she wanted to -- she wanted to restore balance in her way && she wanted to spill blood to do it because that’d be the only way to do it, so as an adult she just peaced off to do it her own way. && tbh that could fit in with a tangled verse -- just in the shadows, keeping the balance of magic unseen to most. she’s a trained assassin && she can literally throw three kunai && pierce three different hearts while in the midst of a smoke bomb like she’s insanely good -- she is also tiny n has some amazing muscles on her arms back && has very visible abs n she sexy n she kills me daily !! but they could get along ?? she does some magic but she was never the best at it tbh but depending on where in the timeline they meet it could be interesting ?? like s1 would be neat for her to meet someone like akali ?? another strong woman fighter but she also comes from a place that praised women’s strength instead of putting it down -- buuuuut she was hiiiighly ignored by her own mother in favour of another neophyte growing up so....ykno...Mood right ?? it stings a lot -- she saved everyone from a corrupted tree spirit n had the girl she looked up to spit in her face because she lost her leg n blamed it on akali && then her mother praised the girl instead of akali despite the other kids telling her what akali had done n singlehandedly dragged them to safety n she was like around nine or ten or so at the time... but it’d be cool if they met s1 n got to kno each other n maaaybe akali joins them on their journey since it has a lot to do with restoring the magical balance of the world n they could use a master assassin but also...the angst with cass taking the moonstone n the conflict akali would face about having to oust her cause ykno...shes fucking up the balance n thats her ykno....entire purpose riiiip

IDK BUT OOF i love widow. i haven’t thought about a tangled verse or a fantasy verse but like uuhhh something about being a french noblewoman married to a freedomfighter but ending up being brainwashed by some magical sect or talon but they’re part of zhan tiris crew or whatever ?? might be neat. she killed her husband && she’s just a little bit possessed now && a ruthless killer. so maaaaaybe....her trying to stop them on their journey to the dark kingdom ?? but her brainwashing starts wearing off the more she’s away from the source tbh -- but also, she’d be on cass’ side when she has the moonstone n honestly that’s very powerful, she’d have a very powerful ally to keep her on track && help like tell her she’s doing great because in the end she’s on zhan tiris side && she can probably see her the whole time && would be working to help get her back to power. also up in the air whether she ends up regaining herself later on && helping cass escape or whatever but she’d feel intensely guilty yikes but anyway i think it’d be honestly rly rly interesting n i’d love to do something with this if u’d be up for it bhdajkmd n like i said we can talk about any of these if u want too !!

☆ BENSON. i have zero ideas for this right now because his series is just so far removed from tangled....it’s a post apocalyptic universe where there’s extremely large animals some of which can talk n want to destroy humans who all live under the surface mostly except the ones who try to survive on the surface. TBH u’d love it...i think u’d love wolf specifically too ?? i dont wanna spoil anything but yeah it might be something u might enjoy ??

but also like mlm wlw solidarity pls ?? he’s a pretty carefree but smart gay teen, he’d get along pretty well with her n play off her iciness cause he’s just like that ?? he started off just caring only for himself n his bug buddy n just thieving a lot but like got a lot of character development -- but i guess he could be a thief in tangled verse ?? n like grow out of it or she could show him there’s better ways n stuff ?? idk...

• Hosea and Dutch are 2 Dads™ who have adopted the whole gang; Susan is the housekeeper (lmao) and Pearson is the personal chef; Uncle is the drunk uncle that wont. fucking. go home. please go home youve been here for a month and you STINK

• The rest is all teenagers (or preteens) with ages ranging from 12-18

• Arthur's the oldest at 18 and has to babysit whenever Dutch and Hosea go on dates. Arthur practically lives in his room because of his depression.

• on a lighter note did i mention that they live on a horse farm

• Hosea goes to Walmart with all the kids and John and Sadie immediately scope out the pool noodles; Arthur's wearing pajamas because this boy doesn't fuckin take care of himself because he's just Sad and just woke up (its 3pm)

• Sean is the "i fucked yer mom" 12 year old on xbox live. he also has ADHD so he's Everywhere all At Once but that's okay

• Micah's still in his emo phase and won't admit it (he listens to bvb) he and sean fight over their shared netflix account. Micah is in the prime age of 13.

• Karen's the type of 16 year old that parties a lot. She argues a lot w/ her dads and is only rly close with Kieran.

• Mary-Beth is an introverted 14 year old that writes fanfic. she has a deviantart account and probably listens to nightcore

•Tilly is 16 and takes cosmetology classes online and omg she is the go to girl for hair (she even does Dutch's hair) (+free haircuts)

• Abigail is a teen mom at 17 and the whole gang Loves Jack. She moved in with Hosea and Dutch because her parents kicked her out. She and Sadie share a room and theyre besties

• Swanson is their neighbor & family friend that also won't GO HOME

• Trelawny is his roommate and. he's Daddy material. smash. (he travels a lot and takes the kids on vacation during the summer)

• Javier is 16 makes his own music and its really good!!!!!!!! he'll probably audition for America's Got Talent

• Charles is the second oldest at 17. he's a wildlife enthusiast and wants to be a veterinarian!!! he loves animals and hes vegan. he brings home so many stray animals and Hosea & Dutch just "Charles....this is the 3rd stray cat you've brought home this week. honey. we already have Cain and you have Taima. you cant. okay fine" (he has an etsy btw)

• Kieran is 14 and is the newest addition to the family :> Arthur isn't too fond of him at first because he's the Favorite™ but he comes around

born and grew up in nyc, mom is korean and an instructor at the first avengers academy based there n dad is nigerian and a diplomat

he’s got a younger sister too named carol but her powers are tba cause she’s still a kiddo

enrolled at the american avengers academy in his early teens

then there was a foreign exchange program offered to go to the school based in sk

mom was like this is a great way to reconnect with ur roots!! adam’s just grateful that he’s got a good grasp on the language bc communication u need it

so he’s got the little fish in a big pond feeling atm...still kind of new

now he’s just out here swinging about improving on his abilities day by day

also in a golden trio of future heroes w/ @avhojun and @avjumi and theyre GREAT

kind of really misses home too but like thats a given when ur so far away

fun fact: when he skateboards he can make it camouflage and stick to flat surfaces like the rest of him so it makes for some rlly wicked tricks to show off

idolizes spiderman in all his different forms and feels like he has to live up to those expectations bc of his spidey powers

Probably some of you guys didnt understand the story xD i’ll explain stuffs more clearer then time flies.

So like i said at the beggining. Zeffer became the creature u know because he was trying to save his mother that got trapped into the digital world.but what will happen if he didnt take any action to save her? No one knowz 8y

Anyways, i like to call them “Vibers".because there’s a reason why their hair has that colours.ok, *ehem* this is going to be a lot explanation.

Among the human race, theres another species thats actually almost look the same as humans but with different vibes. Vibes is like their atmosphere effects that causes anything to react around them.

the both parents actually got cought by the goverment’s experimentation but found an escape route.they both was actually just good friends since theyre the same species.but when time goes by,they got secretly married and had a child.they know its isnt safe from where theyre living,so they moved to Japan , where most people had dyed their hair. ( in my prespective because ANIME u fucs) to camouflage themselves.

Ok,lets start off with the dad.His name is Jason Thuderson (original name ik haha) 25 years old. his vibe can cause most people to have positive attention on him.most of the time, girls cought his vibe and started to have crushes on him.this doesnt effect their own species so his vibe isnt the cause why zeffer’s mom married him.Jason works in an office,so he has to dye his hair to one colour to low down the suspicion.

Btw idk if i already said this but, Jason died is a car crash trying to save someone thats actually tried to cross the road to reach to Jason.and that someone is one of his admireers.zeffer was 5 years old on that time.

ok for the mom,her name is Airi Nanimi.23 years old. Her vibe is can make most stuffs come to life, even digital characters.(and by stuffs i mean only the thing she makes. Like if she created a dinasaur by legos, its just gonna walk like a libing being.) this also kinda helps zeffer to learn stuffs really easily.

one day she created a character that kinda resembles chara (undertale) in her computer but at that time, viruses suddenly attacked her computer and deleted all of it’s memories.and that virus kinda cause the “chara” character to have revengeful feelings to Airi.day by day, chara starts to gain more power by the viruses and actually broke the 4th wall to drag Airi into the digital world. Airi actually knew whats coming so she called Jason’s cousin to take care of zeffer for her in America since she never knew she might not survive very log to find an exit because reality stuffs isnt stable in the digital world. so she needs any epmty digital body to survive longer.

Zeffer actually saw his mom got sucked into the computer when he was 13.and he knew he have to do something to save his mom. ( thats another story) This pic is just about if zeffer never tried to save his mom. He got caught by the goverment and—- u know wat happens 8y
