explaim sokeefitz to me like im 16 and going through a sexuality crisis

apologies for getting to this late, i didn't check tumblr yesterday, but i'm answering it now!

sokeefitz is the polyamorous (consensually non-monogamous) ship between sophie foster, keefe sencen, and fitz vacker. some people interpret sokeefitz as a v relationship, while others (including myself) interpret it as a triad. in-depth explanation surrounding terminology and why people (romantically and queerplatonically) ship it below!

edit: this turned into an impromptu essay lol. there's a one paragraph summary at the end, i promise

v relationships versus triads, in relation to sokeefitz

v relationships are when one person dates two people, but said two people don't date each other. they're called v relationships because if you make a diagram of it, it looks like a v. typically, sokeefitz in a v relationship is portrayed as sophie dating the boys but the boys being just friends. but i've also seen interpretations where it's keefe dating the two of them, or fitz dating the two of them. sometimes, portrayals of v relationship sokeefitz are centered around their v relationship evolving into a triad.

which brings me to what triads are! triads are when three people are all dating each other. so a sokeefitz triad would be sokeefe, sophitz, keefitz, and the three of them together rolled into one ship.

most interpretations of sokeefitz, v relationship or triad, involve them being romantically interested in each other. (i'll talk about queerplatonic variations of sokeefitz later!)

why do people ship sokeefitz?

sokeefe and sophitz have a lot of canon grounding, so i think it's pretty self-explanatory as to why people ship sophie with keefe or fitz. the reasoning as to why shipping her with both of them became a thing was because people here on this lovely hellsite looked at the love triangle and went, wouldn't it be a win-win situation if they were an ot3 (3-person version of otp [one true pairing])?

while keefe and fitz have gotten jealous over each other's connections to sophie in canon, with their background of being best friends, some can see them being okay - with boundary-setting and trust-rebuilding beforehand - with dating her simultaneously. as for why sophie would want to date them simultaneously, there's a lot of moments in canon where she hates the idea of 'choosing between them'. she loves both of them in different ways for different reasons, and doesn't like the idea of giving up one for the other. if she were given the option of trying out a polyamorous relationship with them, there's a high chance she'd take it in canon. so, people give her that chance in fanon.

as for why people enjoy variations of sokeefitz where the boys are dating sophie and each other: keefe and fitz are often interpreted as childhood friends to exes. ex best friends? ex boyfriends? who knows anymore, keefe canonically stole fitz's bramble jersey, and fitz canonically wanted to move in with keefe and be his roommate. canon tries to portray them as friends with tension, but queer fans like myself have a tendency to look at their deep understanding of who the other used to be from the little things to the major parts and the bridge burning between them and go, hm. that's some good ship material, if i do say so myself.

keefe and fitz probably wouldn't have mutual romantic attraction towards each other in canon, but keefe flirts with literally everyone (from sophie to dex, and also going to take off his shirt for tam that one time) and is often read as bisexual-coded by the fandom. (typical bisexual definition: being attracted to two or more genders.) lots of people on here view fitz as being attracted to people based on personality, not gender. i personally like to headcanon him as someone who's not a big fan of labeling his sexuality, since it might feel like boxing himself into something, when the public and his family and his peers have been boxing him into different roles his whole life.

anyway! as to why people like myself like sokeefitz, alongside the screw the love triangle aspect of the ship, is how the three of them work excellently as a team. they have deep chemistry, and know how to compliment each other's weaknesses one way or another. they're by far not a perfect throuple, but i feel like they trust and love each other enough (in their own ways) that they're willing to work out their issues together. sophie and fitz have ironed some issues between them out through cognate training, and continue to do so; sophie and keefe have had major disagreements before, but reconcile in the end once they've tried to make up for mistakes made; and keefe and fitz have the hardest time making up, but it's arguably harder to let go of your first true friend when the two of you have gone through so much already.

queerplatonic variations of sokeefitz

i've also seen interpretations where at least two of them are in a queerplatonic relationship (qpr) instead. queerplatonic is a broad category that's typically defined as deep intimacy between people that may involve actions outwardly perceived as romantic (cuddling, dates, etc) but not have romantic intentions behind them. (for informational purposes, since qpr's aren't talked about much outside of the aromantic community, i'll note that most of the time qpr's don't include sex, but sometimes they do.) since queerplatonic is such a broad category, there are lots of variations of how it feels. the two main descriptions of queerplatonic attraction i've seen fall under the category of 'more intimate version of friendship' or 'relationship that exists entirely outside the platonic to romantic spectrum'. (personally, it feels like the former to me.)

queerplatonic variations of sokeefitz typically come from headcanons that fitz is on the aromantic spectrum, since he appears to have little to no romantic attraction in general towards people in canon. (example: while keefe frequently flirts w/ people and notes/hints at attractiveness in others, most of that doesn't even register as a possibility in fitz's head. unless he is attracted to someone, which appears to have only ever explicitly happened in canon with sophie.) there are headcanons that fitz is simply aromantic, while others headcanon him as demiromantic (only romantically attracted to people once he really gets to know them) or grayromantic (experiences romantic attraction occasionally, or only under certain circumstances, or only in small amounts).

this doesn't mean that sokeefitz is only ever interpreted as queerplatonic on fitz's end, though! i've read at least one fic where sophie was in a qpr with keefe and fitz (and i'm pretty sure keefe and fitz were in a qpr with each other too), and i've also read one where keefe was aroace (aromantic asexual, little to no romantic or sexual attraction) but willing to try out a qpr with sophie and fitz, who were both interested in him.

another important note about qpr's: some qpr's consist of people experiencing only queerplatonic attraction towards each other, other qpr's have at least one person who experiences romantic attraction and at least one other person who experiences queerplatonic attraction and they work out boundaries around what's 'too romantic' (been there, done that), or have at least one person experiencing attraction that fluctuates between romantic and queerplatonic, or something else. sokeefitz can be interpreted to fall under any of these categories, although i personally interpret it as the second option when we throw queerplatonic attraction into the mix.

summary: sokeefitz is the polyamorous ship between sophie foster, keefe sencen, and fitz vacker. it can be interpreted as all of them dating each other (being in a triad), or only some of them dating each other and others being just friends (being in a v relationship). v relationship variations of sokeefitz usually consist of sophie dating keefe and fitz, but keefe and fitz not dating each other - but there are other v relationship variations, like keefe dating sophie and fitz, but sophie and fitz being just friends. the main reasons why people ship these three is because the love triangle is stupid, and they have good enough chemistry and enough want to make things work with each other that they have potential for a good relationship. also, there are queerplatonic variations of sokeefitz, but those are less common and based on headcanons surrounding different characters - mostly fitz - being on the aromantic spectrum.

so i’ve got no real patience for digital art and all my sketches are in pencil in colorless but, while planning my own novel out, i’ve been using art breeder to visual and flesh out my character’s physical features.

Que the random KOTLC HeadCannons again because I fucking can hoe.

Sophie still wear human shoes, so does Dex because he bonds with his mom dealing with human stuff. Keefe also prefers the style of them so he got custom made elf shoes that looks like human shoes.

KOTLC elves religion is the stars. I saw someone (I forgot who I'm sorry pookie) talk about that and I now accept that. On the flip side, Orgrs and Gnomes religion is nature. Hilarious because they "worship" it differently. Goblins religion isn't a thing but the concept of honor and pride. Trolls worship battle and intelligence. I hope this shit makes sense lol.

If Marella was in the human world she'd be addicted to vapes. I don't make the rules man.

Fitz, Dex, and the Twins have built a tolerance and became accustomed to violence and things that would shatter a normal elf's mind because they were exposed to it at a young age. Dex was through human movies/documentaries/books, Fitz from looking for Sophie, and the Twins because y'know their whole shtick.

Tam is asexual and homoromantic. Linh is lesbian. No further questions.

Fitz is Bi-Curious. No further explanation.

Dex is pan. He doesn't know it yet but he is.

Keefe is a bi king.

Keefe tried to have a hair dye phase but was quickly punished for it so yeah.

Bianna had purple hair at one point. She made Fitz have a purple streak in his hair too and that got him even more fangirls.

Fitz didn't know he was dating people ever. Like all the relationships hes been in were one sided and it was the delulu chick. He was clueless. So he was often confused when girls would randomly tell him it's over. Mans be like "?????"

Keefe would flirt but deny anyone the chance of dating him. He feels bad about it though cuz he could get the smallest wiff of their soul crushing and he hated doing it but he had to.

Dex knows how to sew. He's really good at anything to due with creation honestly. He's really handy to have around Ong.

Dex also thinks the weirdest creatures are cute. Mans will look at the ugliest weirdest thing and be like "Awhhh who's da baby!?"

Dex suffers from panic attacks, even before the whole getting kidnapped shit. He has GAD.

On the topic of disorders, there are therapists in the lost cities but uh. There isn't many. Mostly because the world is "perfect" so they don't see the need for it but there are a good handful to fit in one building.

Elves minds don't actually shatter from guilt per say but trauma and rumination. Something that fucked you up mentally? You constantly think about it? BAM GUILT!!! The better you are at coping, the less likely you are to shatter. Not only that but the younger you are when exposed to guilt shattering things the less you will shatter. (Based on my observations of KOTLC)

I ignore the whole Grady being blond thing. He's black hear girly.

After everything with Fitz, Keefe sees Ro as his best friend. He'll never tell her or anyone that but that's what he feels and thinks.

Fitz hates himself. A lot. He doesn't think he does but he also doesn't know that being self critical to the point of getting angry when his image is fucked up isn't normal.

Bianna doesn't hate herself but is more scared of how she's perceived. She thinks she's fine, mostly because Della and Alavar(mostly him) made sure to give her a lot of positive about herself. But people use to point out things about her that didn't live up to the Vacker name or just made her "weird" so she basically said fine I'll fit in a little bit lol.

Keefe has thought about yeeting himself before. Only briefly, never too long or in detail. He just wondered if the world would be any different if he didn't exist. Would anyone even notice he was gone? Probably not. I mean his family thinks he's a fuck up and most of his teachers only see him as a smart ass punk. The only time he even thought of a plan to kill himself though was when Sophie "died". The only reason he didn't was because a small gut feeling told him something didn't add up. That she was still there. They could still save her, and Dex. He was so grateful for the feeling when he found them both.

Dex use to have a habit of self harm. Not cutting no. He would bite, scratch, anything to cause pain when he was frustrated or upset. He was bullied a lot as a kid and constantly dealt with jerks in the store treating his family wrong. His mom got him out of it though. Now he just scratches himself when he's frustrated. He tries not to do it in public.

The twins have eaten meat before. They gotta do anything to survive before the gnomes found them. Linh cried every time though. Tam just felt a little sad but hey his sister was fed so he couldn't be happier.

Elwin in the best doctor in the lost cities. But he hates publicity and doesn't want to be stuck with snobs and rather deal with kids since he doesn't plan on having any children himself. (He's also gay and knows it but he is terrified of the backlash and whatever else that would happen to him if he came out.)

Stina has a hatred for most nobels, no on but one of her ex friends knows this though. Stina genuinely can't stand them, mostly because of how they would treat her dad and such. But she's a great actor. (ILY bbg)

Okay don't be mean to me but I forgot Dex's mom's name but she miscarried before having Dex. It's rare for that to happen to elves so it just added to her trauma and stuff. Her name is like Juliana or smt I know it. Fuck what's her name. Ugh. Curse you shit memory man.

Bronte use to be a lot more happy and loving, even had a girlfriend for a really long time. She was one of the few elves that have died in the many years the world has exited. That's what caused his shift in goals. He also sees parts of him and her in Sophie and that's what makes him not like her very much cuz she kind of looks like a child he could have had.

Bronte also had a thing for Fintan before the girl. He's bi. Fuck off.

Bronte is also emo/goth. The OG icon frfr.

Oralie use to be a very mean person because feeling everyone emotions even without touching them (even if the small waft of emotions isn't that intense) really upset her. She is one of the few people who got therapy and then she found out she wanted to change the world so she worked towards being a council member.

After and elf turns like 29 people don't really question the age gap of the relationship. Anything younger dating someone like hundreds of years older turns heads but people keep their opinions to themselves.

Weddings are like a fashion show to elves. Everyone, not just the bride, show up glammed ASF. Is a huge party event.

Some families do celebrate birthdays, but only by tens. You're born! Birthday party. You're ten years old? Birthday party! ECT. This is considered very old fashioned and traditional.

Most of the young adult elves live in Atlantis.

Oh and the other school in the lost cities are for those who don't plan on nobility or want to achieve a specific profession that isn't ability related. They do most of the stuff Foxfire does but instead of one on one teaching it's a small group of ten or five being taught at once, grouped based on abilities. They aren't very popular which makes them really easy to manage and stuff.

There are only a handful of ancients that still keep up with the world and ECT. They choose isolation because of the dark things they've seen and how long it has been. They are kind of.... Cooky. Lil crazy. Bonkers if you will.

The shades of blue can get really close to green and purple, even some lighting makes them look like that.

Intersex elves happen rarely but when they do they are asked what they wish to identify as when they are ten and will go in as that for the rest of their lives. Out of all of the elves population, twenty intersex people exist. Five of them are ancients and two are still not old enough to choose their identity yet.

It's not unheard of for every distant cousins to get married. (They gotta be like 6 times removed tho.)

My biggest project these last 7 months: an update to the KOTLC fantasy AU that I did over a year ago! I added a lot of lore bc I’m a nerd so don’t be pressured to read through it all lol.

For those who are new to it:

SOPHIE FOSTER is a runaway princess from the Kingdom of the Scarlet Eye. She ran away after being betrothed to Fitz and realizing she didn’t want that for herself.

DEX DIZZNEE is an assassin for the rebels. His whole family was taken by the Evergold government in an incident which heavily injured his left arm, causing him to wear a prosthetic. He was sent to assassinate the crown prince of Evergold (Fitz), but took pity on Sophie instead and helped her escape.

KEEFE SENCEN is the exiled prince of the Candleflame Kingdom whose taken up the easygoing lifestyle of a bard. Shortly after his banishment, a bounty hunter named Ro took pity on him and started following him around to make sure he doesn’t die. She sometimes does want to kill him though when he sings the dreaded “Ballad of Ro and Bo”.

FITZ VACKER is the crown prince of Evergold and a gifted seer. After his betrothed disappears right before their wedding day, he assumes she was kidnapped by Dex on behalf of the rebels. Thus, he enlists the help of his sister and sets off on a quest to get his beloved back.

BIANA VACKER is a princess of Evergold second and a legendary huntress first. She is famous for being able to track any living creature down. When her dumb brother asks for her help in rescuing his fiancé, she knows she has no other choice but to tag along to make sure he doesn’t get killed.

LINH SONG used to be the royal water mage of the Candleflame Kingdom. But after threatening to expose Queen Gisela’s brutal dark magic rituals, she was heavily cursed and forced to flee. Now she is a silent shell of herself living in the slums of Mysterium.

TAM SONG is a pickpocket on the streets of Mysterium using the magic that he once used in his post as a royal guard in the Candleflame Kingdom to swipe wallets and coins. Since Linh has been cursed, he has gotten his hands dirtier and dirtier searching for a cure.

MARELLA REDEK is a fire witch and Linh’s fiancé. She also served under the Candleflame Royal Family until Linh was cursed. She blames herself for the incident and spends her days with Tam searching for a cure.

Keefe seeing her make cookies and Mallow melt and wondering why she would do something just for him. it breaks her heart when he apologizes for "imposing himself" and "putting her out" and her gently telling him she does it because he is a lovely person that deserves all the mallowmelt in the world

Fitz and Biana getting hugs and food when their dad was broken minded and their mom was trying to hold it together. so they try not to cry and edaline comes over to help cook and take care of them and their mother.

Tam doesn't trust her. he has no reason to believe she won't start with the harsh remarks and withering looks so he stays far away from Sophie's family. He doesn't realize that he has a place to go until he has to run from his parents one night, and he light leaps to where ever he can to get away from the noise. after ignoring his sister and Sophie's imparter calls, he sits down and sobs. after a while in the dark, he hears someone calling his name. He hesitantly calls out because he shouldn't have been so dumb and now his sister is out in the dark because of him and he was supposetokeephersafeheissostupidstupidstupid- and it's edaline that emerges from the dark and despite his previous snarls and attitude she takes him home with a gentleness he hasn't known before

it happens when Lihn is over at Sophie's house with Biana. her mom never let her have her hair out of a braid, so she lets it down (for the baby alicorns to chew on, or so they think). it's the middle of the night and she forgot to braid her hair before bed and it got tangled and her mom was right, she wasn't even smart enough to take care of herself she would have died on her own if Tam wasn't there stupid stupid stupid stupid- and suddenly shes sobbing in her friends bathroom with a hairbrush and water swirling in the air and she can't stop she's going to ruin everything around her she can't - and edaline knows when her kids are crying, so she takes the hairbrush and bushes her kids hair and tells her all about why she was still up, that darn t-rex right next to her window. and when she is done with a waterfall braid that shows off how long and shiny Lihn's hair has grown, she tells her how beautiful the water Lihn commands is.

and suddenly it's so many years ago, before the fires burned. edaline sits with her first of (many) children and Jolie is drawing little stick figures, two tall, a blond and red head, a medium blonde one, and many little small ones around them. A little voice says "can we go see Ms. Della and her baby again? he's really cute" and Edaline could never deny her baby of anything so of course she nods a yes.. but her little girl continues "Mommy can I have a sibling?" and edaline is caught by surprise. she thought her baby girl had everything, friends, family, too many animals to count. she looks at her daughter, and says "maybe one day. but you would have to share, and help them all the time. I didn't like your auntie for a long while until we were both grown up." she teases, but somehow the child is undeterred. "Someday, I'll be the best big sister, and you'll have be so proud of how much I've helped my little sister! just like you mama!" -and then it's now again, she is in her daughter's room. it's green and full of life. And Sophie follows the path Jolie laid for her, and she can hear Jolie again, just like the day she died. "Look Momma, I helped her just like I said I would! Aren't you proud?" and edaline can hear all of her children downstairs. she can't hear Jolie's laugh in Sophie, and Keefe doesn't smile exactly like she did. But Jolie lives on as they walk the path she did. it may terrify edaline, but her babies have a big sister looking out for them above, and a home and family to come back to.

Tam raised his eyebrows a bit but took the money without question, and put it all in his and Linh's savings account. They don't have any money of their own, so this is gonna help so much.

Ro was salty for a whole week.

Emery for a whole day. And then he realized he was acting like Ro. And got ahold of himself.

Grady is really just happy they finally got together and he has reason to give Keefe a legit shovel talk.

Edaline smiled, softly, and kissed her kiddo's forehead, and told her not to worry about why Ro is acting so odd.

Sophie and Keefe didn't know a thing. The entire time. They were in the dark about it, although they're both so oblivious it wasn't even that hard.

Kam Fluffy Quick Write

(Human AU cause I'm too brain dead at 11PM to do cannon at the moment and I want tooooooo. Because FLUFF.)

Tam walked out of their bedroom at 10AM and came up behind Keefe, wrapped his arms around his waist and rested his head on his shoulder.

"Morning..." he yawned, closing his eyes.

"Morning love." Keefe said, smiling, a warm feeling in his chest from the weight of his boyfriend. He loved to see Tam all sleepy and tired. He had no filter and his rigid persona softened. Keefe was secretly relishing in the fact that he was the only person who got to see this side of him every single day.

"How are you so awake?" Tam asked, nuzzling into Keefe's shoulder. His face was close enough that his breath sent a shiver down Keefe's spine.

"Coffee." Keefe said, reaching over to the coffee machine and pouring Tam a mug.

Tam smiled and gave Keefe a kiss on the cheek before letting go of him to fix the coffee.

Keefe finished making pancakes and sat down at the barstool next to the counter, Tam slid into the one next to him and picked up the pancake, eating it dry as Keefe drowned him in maple syrup.

"The only reason you're allowed to do that is because it's sugar free because if it wasn't you'd be bouncing off the walls." Tam said, mouth full of pancake.

"And you're insane for eating them dry." Keefe said.

Tam shrugged and they ate in silence, Keefe finished first, setting his plate in the sink and rinsing it, knowing what a bitch maple syrup was to get off after a while, and went back over to where Tam was sitting, and gave him a kiss. Tam accepts it but leans back after a moment and makes a face.

"Bleh, you have morning breath mixed with maple syrup. Go brush your teeth dipshit." Tam said as he finished his food.

Keefe laughed, pressing a kiss to Tam’s forehead before grabbing his wrist and dragging him to the bathroom. Tam made a sound of protest but let himself be led along. They got to the bathroom and brushed their teeth, elbowing each other and almost choking on toothpaste.

Keefe spit out his tooth paste followed by Tam and grinned wickedly before wrapping his arms around Tam's waist.

"Can I kiss you now?"

Tam shook his head affectionately with a smile, placing his hands on Keefe's chest. "Yeah sure."

Keefe leaned in and pressed their mouths together. Tam tasted like mint, obviously, and Keefe felt him smile as they kissed.

Tam's arms snaked their way up to wrap around Keefe's neck and they both pulled away so their noses and foreheads were touching. They smiled at each other and Keefe pressed another gentle kiss on Tam’s lips. 

"I love you." Tam said softly.

"I love you too." Keefe agreed.
