i really dont understand studying at all like genuinely i don't know what it is . i know about "taking notes" and "reading the textbook" and that's it . quizlet doesn't do shit for me because i don't know what to. do. with the cards. look at them ? am i supposed to just look at them . No one bothered teaching me actual skills bc i got good grades when i was 8 and now i am so hopelessly lost . why did no one think to teach me this for when stuff got harder than four plus three
#text#ive never understood flashcards . like what to do with them. how is that any more different or helpful than just like... writing a list on#paper of vocab terms or whatever#and like conceptually i know 'learning' is like. not only committing things to memory but also being able to engage with it which#is why teachers loveeeee group discussions and essays. but like. you read the text and then you go to class and Discuss but how do you#Learn what the text is saying like how do you . put it in your brain and udnerstand and remember it .#i think im missing something very simple because everyone else in the world seems to understand this fine#like where does the part where you go oh! i understand this and can explain it in my own words. Happen#how do u force it to happen if its not something ur autistic about#Like the only example i can think of rn of this is when i hyperfixated on hpa axis dysregulation + trauma a couple weeks ago#so i was learning stuff about it for Fun and not for school so no comprehension tests or notes or anything#and basically i'd just put on a webinar while i sorted seaglass or worked on sewing or whaever#and i can explain the concept fine. ur brain controls ur body so if it gets too scared ur body loses its shit basically.#but i dont remember most of the words. i still can barely define neurotransmitter#i can apply this to my own life but i confuse the hippocampus and the frontal lobe and the amygdala etc#and i couldnt point out any of them on a diagram#i dont get it . like i know a lot and simultaneously nothing at all abt it#how am i supposedto be remembering words and numbers AND understanding the concepts AND im supposed to do that between#reading the book and engaging in thoughtful conversation with my peers i dont understand

I thought I was the only one who can't get enough of them just being close brothers. Yes, let them share a bed and kiss on the forehead and do stuff that brothers do. So say... do you have fluff fics? I'm taking the easy way out by asking because you have sooo many fics. 👀 looking respectfully. I don't know where to find Thor and Loki fluff, and I've tried. I tried so hard! Found a good one where they say I love you, but it's just a vignette and it's not enough. 😢 There was another one on ao3 that I read ages ago but I can't find it again. I'm starved for the bros showing affection in whatever way. Help?
Five People Who Were Fazed By Loki Sitting on Thor's Lap by Catspook : 3k : Thor likes to have Loki sit on his lap, the Avengers think it is weird, and Loki likes to troll them
Conflict Resolution by TheOtherOdinson : 6k : After Odin's death in Norway, Thor and Loki were left alone to deal with their loss and anger. Just the two of them. With no interruptions.
Home by my_dear_man : 2k : When the closest thing to home is right in front of you, even if it's your adopted brother who tried to kill you and take over Earth.
Soft Touch by calicojackofficial : Tony catches Thor and Loki napping together on a public couch.
We Were Eight at the Time... by Writinthestars : 5k : He’d never attacked Thor before. Their quarrels were always preluded by some sort of argument so there was warning, and they both knew they wouldn’t hurt each other too terribly.
This is the first time I used a real weapon against him. There’s no returning from that. It’s too late. I could’ve killed Thor - he’ll never forgive me.
Loki’s eyes filled with tears. This wasn’t what he wanted.
OR: Loki stabs Thor when they're eight.
Five out of Five is an Ideal You Can't Have by GalaxyThreads : 13k : While on an assignment from their father, Loki gets cursed to lose his senses. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but they're days from help, and Thor is forced to slowly watch his brother lose himself. (gen, Pre-Thor 1)
Mornings are for Destroying Landscaping by SalParadiseLost : 3k : Loki and Thor decide to spar one morning.
Tony isn't amused, Peter is happy to be a witness, and the Avengers don't have any power.
Castles in the Air by cosmic_medusa : 182k : Loki's first act as King is to collect his banished brother to aid his regency, however brief. Thor discovers that the political landscape is far from what it seemed, and that the lies of Odin have resulted in the threat of both his sons' safety and sanity. Drama, angst, double-crosses, butchering of folklore and history, and the epic bromance of Asgard's Princes ensues.
Bargaining by proantagonist : 109k : Faced with an eternity without his brother, Loki strikes a bargain to change the past. Post TDW.
i couldn't change (though i wanted to); by unintentionallyangsty : Given the team's circumstances--travelling through the cosmos and headed for Midgard on a previously unplanned voyage--Loki taking up a newfound fondness for shapeshifting on a whim is hardly the weirdest thing that has happened to any single member of the Revengers in the past several months. In fact, it doesn't even make the top three.
(Alternatively, how Loki unintentionally ends up bonding with the Revengers on the Statesman as a number of different creatures))
That Sheds His Blood With Me by Kadorienne : 13k : "Because you are my brother," Thor told him.
(Politics and family on Asgard. A brotherly love story.)
Rotten At the Heart by Coneycat : 6k : in which Odin raised Loki as Thor's brother... and then used him to force Thor to prove his loyalty to Asgard.
Picking Up the Pieces by Thursdays_Angel : 7k : During the slow ride back to Earth Tony and Nebula come across the remains of the Statesman. Tony searches the faces for his friend and finds his brother instead. Thor loves his kid brother, the least Tony can do is bring him back for a proper burial.
And if that Mockingbird don't sing by dante_baby : 7k : If someone asked Loki how he imagines his last day of youth, he certainly wouldn't say being sick and completely alone in his own room. Luckily, Thor is always there for him.
Soft by enchantedlokii : 1k : Sicktember Day Five — Comfort Item
Insurgency by for_darkness_shows_the_stars : 50k : Despite his best efforts, Loki wins the Battle of New York.
The universe will never be the same again.
I'd follow you through hel (and fight off demons as well) by ThatOneAnnoyingFox : 1k : After a bad meeting with Odin, Thor watches the void.
It’s dishonourable, but if he did it with no-one to see, who cares where he’d go?
Portal To The Past by worstloki : 106k (ongoing) : Loki gets sent back in time a few centuries and since he's over trying to gain Odin's approval he's reliving life with his own happiness in mind. Naturally, everyone else has a problem with this.
OR: that one fic where odin keeps trying but is unable to get rid of teen loki
The Frog Incident by MoonGoddex : 6k : Loki turned him into a frog. And honestly, Thor hadn't thought twice about it at first. He'd been changed into a little golden retriever puppy one time as a commentary on his general demeanour, and into a donkey by way of insult via synonym. None of those transformations had resulted in people in black and orange bursting through glowing doors that hadn't been there before. Well, okay. There were a few steps between the transformation and his capture.
Throg, or The Time Loki Turned Thor Into A Frog by PhantomEngineer : 1k : The time when they were children when Loki turned Thor into a frog.
The Glorious Death by stainedglassflood : 1k : Loki dies without honour. Thor blames himself. (I will not fight you, brother.)
Just Close Your Eyes by ADreamer67 : 32k : Ragnarok has come to pass, the Asgardians have reached a deal with the leaders of Midgard for territory of their own, Loki is allowed to stay (provided he doesn’t leave said territory), and Thor is settled on the throne. So all in all, things are going well, if you ignore the recent massacre and planetary annihilation.
Well, except for the fact that Loki is working himself into the ground. And Thor is having none of it.
Cue a not entirely legal brotherly field trip where Thor will make Loki relax, or die trying. Responsibilities? Pssh, who cares about those? (Hint - Loki. Very much so)
(death must be lonely like I am) by GalaxyThreads : 17k (ongoing) : After the Battle of New York, S.H.I.E.L.D. claims Loki for punishment and consequently, also HYDRA. When the Avengers are assembled under the belief that Loki is escaping his cell, they rapidly realize what a mistake they've made leaving the younger Asgardian in their hands. (Gen, blind!Loki)
to your own blood, and empty spaces in the throat by vellaphoria : 13k : Silence suffocated the battlefield in the wake of Thanos’ ships.
It fell from the sky they had rent in their flight from Midgard’s surface, and it rose like mist from the forests they had left broken in their wake.
It settled in Thor’s lungs, collecting in the cracks of his armor like ash.
Cold Nostalgia by ADreamer67 : 30k : It's the last Winter Solstice before Thor is crowned. Thor wants to do something special. Inasmuch as a hunt in the middle of winter is special.
Loki just doesn't want to freeze to death.
Loki, Chronologically by eirtae : 180k (ongoing series) : Loki: Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll Edition
OR: series of fics about Loki's life, and Thor's
proximity parasite by everylokitten : 3k : Thor eats something he shouldn't and gets a parasite that makes it painful for him to be away from his brother for even short periods of time. Eventually, there will be a safe way to remove all traces of it. Until then, the only thing that can quell his pain is Loki. Cuddles ensue.
What family is for by dante_baby : 8k : Thor got sick and Loki is definitely not having a good time.
Five times Tony was a dumbass and one time he was a REAL dumbass. by thebackwardsstep : 3k : Her hysteria exploded through the halls, her sides splitting, face perfectly beaming. The laughter would have been contagious if Tony wasn’t on the receiving end of it. “Yeah, sure. That’s his girlfriend.” Okay, so Tony wasn’t stupid: he could clearly identify the sarcasm in the Valkyrie’s tone, meaning she was blatantly lying. Tony wasn’t stupid, which was why he felt confident in concluding that the mystery-woman was obviously Thor’s wife.
The Woes of Survival by withthekeyisking : 5k : They won, didn't they? They're off to find a new home, Thor is in his rightful place as king, and he finally has his brother back at his side.
But Loki is acting a little differently; quieter, even when he's speaking. Isolated, even when he has the entire room's attention. Flinching from touches he would have allowed before, even with the customary rolling of his eyes.
And then Thor overhears an odd conversation between Brunnhilde and Loki...
Ichor in Violet by tirsynni : 15k : When Thor learns that Loki can travel to other realms without Heimdall seeing, of course he convinces Loki to take them both to Jotunheim to hunt Frost Giants. There an accident unravels centuries of lies and threatens to unravel Loki, too.
The first rule of Vonasnire was there were no questions asked. by thebackwardsstep: 6k : Pure, shameless fluff about Thor being such a good brother and guiding Loki through his feelings even despite how much they can hurt them both.
small and little and held by Lokincest : 1k : Thor wants to be the little spoon.
additionally, virtually anything by unintentionallyangsty, GalaxyThreads, xWitchAlchemistx (who does write Thor/Loki but the brodinsons is strong), ADreamer67, etc.

Coffee's for (Elevator) Closers
Tumblr media
(A/N) First fanfic on Tumblr! If you have any requests for one shots, feel free to message me, I'll come out with a list of what I write for soon! Also Gif not mine 🖤
As I walk down the crowded and unforgiving streets of New York, I curse myself for not leaving 5 minutes earlier to get this coffee run in time for the shoot today. My shoes barely graze the street as I do my best to push through the crowd and reach the building we’re supposed to film in today. I stop in front of the skyscraper, and I double check the address before turning around to use my back to push through the doors and feel the weather change from the cold streets of Staten to the warmth of a heater. My lungs take a breather as I stop in front of the double elevators with a socially acceptable distance from the only other person also waiting for a lift. I find less anxiety clouding my mind now that there’s someone else most likely getting to set as late as I am. I take a glance to my side to notice that it’s one of the guys starring in today’s shoot. My knowledge on the show and who they were was very limited; If I never got a job as an assistant, I would’ve never even heard his name, nevermind seeing him in person. The doors shift to open and I see him look up from his phone, and gesture it forward in a motion applying the gentleman’s value of “ladies first”. I give a nod and a small smile in return and I assume that’ll be the most of our conversation as I enter the elevator and put my back as firmly as I can to the rail. Normally, I would be gripping both hands onto whatever I can stabilize myself in whatever way possible, trying to stifle the irrational fear in my head. The least I can say is that moving to a big city can certainly become exposure therapy for a fear of heights and elevators.
However, it turns out my worst fears would only become realized as I suddenly jolted forward, doing my best to recover my balance and spill the least amount of coffee possible. My pulse quickens as I can’t feel the inertia of moving up or down gives me, which only strengthens my fear worse. A curse escapes my lips, as I put the trays of drinks into a corner and go over to the panel, pressing any button I can. While I want to believe one of these will be the magic answer to getting out of this hellbox, but I was then gently set me aside to accept the fact we were stuck by the man I shared the space with. “Here, hon, I got this.” He murmured, then hit a button with a phone icon above it, one I thought I’d never have a use for it. Even in the state I was in, I didn’t let how attractive the simple gesture was. In a moment, another voice came through the speaker, and the shaggy-haired man explained the situation to them; it’s as if he wasn’t freaked out but I couldn’t help but feel my hands shake and my breathing quicken.
“You alright, sweetheart?” He said, making sure his tone was tender. I looked up, remembering his name–Well, nickname–Q. Seeing him on set, he seemed so much more intimidating to talk to, so unapproachable. Right now though, I could tell he was doing everything he could to keep the young woman in front of him from having a breakdown. “Don’t worry, I used to be a firefighter, you’re in good hands. Just breathe” His deep brown eyes pierced into mine, making me have to keep my gaze to my shoes half the time he was calming me down. I caught a glimpse of his chest raising and did my best to mimic the rhythm, my lungs filling with stale elevator air.
My heart can’t stop beating regardless of how much calmer I felt in the predicament we were in. What set in for me was the fact that this was the man I not only worked under, but I would catch glances at while I ran around him, like a small treat to my workday. I couldn’t deny that this was a guy I had a bit of a “workplace crush” on, but I didn’t think I would ever be so close to him, let alone being alone together. My brain finally registers a comprehensive thought in my daze of anxiety, and I turn around and kneel in front of the coffees, scanning the orders until I pull out a plain black I hand over to Q. “Here,” I say. “At least someone should be able to get their drink on time.” I continue, hoping to bring a little less tension to…well, everything.
He gives me a chuckle as he takes the cup from me, our hands grazing just barely. Even in that small moment, I could feel how small my hand felt next to his. “I appreciate the speedy delivery, Miss…”
I tell him my name, filling in the gap of his sentence. “I’m one of y’all’s assistants today. Shit, I’m gonna get chewed out for getting there so late.”
“You’ll be alright, Sweetheart, I won’t let ya get in any trouble.” Q reassures me. The comfort he’s supplying me as well as the slight display of power both send a shiver down my spine. “All I want you to worry about is keeping calm, alright?” His eyes keep mine in such a gentle glance. I can’t help myself when I feel the heat in my cheeks rise.
“Thanks.” There’s a pause in the air as I let out a small chuckle. “I really didn’t expect to talk to you more than just getting your lunch order later.” I grasp at anything I can grasp for a conversation. Hell, if I’m gonna be stuck in a closed place with my attractive boss, I’m gonna make the most of the opportunity.
Q took a swig of his coffee before a slight smirk crept onto his face. “Well, I guess it’s one way to meet the cute coworker.”
My brows furrowed and my mouth became agape, as if I was going to say something but nothing came out. After my brain finishes rebooting from the shock. “Is this a way to get my mind off being stuck in an elevator?” I ask, a slight smile occurring on my face. It doesn’t feel like a real thing that happened, as if this was some nightmare turned lucid dream.
“A little.” he shrugs, taking another drink of his coffee. “But it’s not a lie. I’ve seen you around, I’ve been meaning to find a way to introduce myself. But when I finally get a break, you’re usually busy so…” Q trails off as he keeps his eye contact. It was astonishing how honest he could be with me without a hint of fear. You couldn’t pry information like that out of me if you tried. “Well, guess the universe helped you out.” I brush my hair out of my face, trying to mimic his levels of confidence. “So tell me, if you ever did have a chance to talk to me, what was the game plan?” Q lets out a hearty chuckle. “You realize 90% of the show is excuses to talk to strangers? The actual excuse to approach you would be easy. Like the coffee.” Q pointed to the tray. “I could make up some bullshit about saying my coffee tasted wrong then go with you to replace it. Probably buy you something too as a thank you.” My eyebrows raise, an amused smile spreading on my face.
“Impressive, I can tell you're a professional.” I say. “If we’re being honest here, I also thought you’re kinda cute too. I just figured it wouldn’t be anything…” I trail off, searching for the right words. “… realistic?”
“If I’m being honest, I have caught you staring once or twice. It’s the only reason I would lay it on so heavy.” I looked down with a smile on my face, slightly embarrassed, but enjoying the teasing words.
Before I could reply, we could hear a commotion on the other side of the door; the technician was here to help, prying the doors open with a crowbar. As we get out, I take my coffee trays from the elevator. “Hey.” I turn around to see Q standing over me. “Let me help you with that.” He takes the second tray from my hands, allowing me to feel so much more stable. I thank him and we go up a flight of stairs together, making small talk as he holds each door open for me. We get to set, and we place the coffees onto the table. No one bothers to fuss about coffee being late since Q walked in with me, a shield for any higher ups to take their drink instead of nagging me.
Before I could walk away to check what else I have to do, Q gently grabs my shoulder to get my attention. He has his phone in his hand, pointed towards me on a ‘new contact’ page. “Hey, I’d love to get your number, maybe plan something that isn’t in a 5 by 5 square foot box.” Q’s eyes look nervous while his smirk tries to give off the impression he’s as cool as a cucumber. Biting my bottom lip to keep myself from smiling like an idiot, I take the phone from his hands. I put my number and name into his phone, but I can’t resist putting a green heart and an elevator emoji next to my name as a little inside joke. I give the phone back to him and he smiles at the name I used. “Thanks, I’ll see you around” Q concludes, waving to me with his phone in his hands before joining his co-stars.
I smile as I walk away, and I feel my phone buzz with a notification.
(New Number): Nice to meet you! And be your hero from that elevator encounter ;)
I quickly add the new number to my phone, knowing this isn’t a number I want to lose anytime soon. I may have to take the stairs for the rest of my life now, but at least I got to score a date with my hot boss.

reading your (amazing) writings got me thinking about like, a fuckboy/playboy(? im sorry idk the gn word for this? slut maybe lmao?) yandere who’s rich, doesn’t even need to study, always gets to any party where they can get some action. they never had a romantic relationship before bc they thought it was just stupid and unnecessary foreplay. basically everyone is either horny for them or hate them.
so imagine their surprise when they see their (future) darling staring at them while they were talking to their friends. yan thinks they’re cute enough and talks to them, starts flirting their darling up and when they ask what darling finds attractive about them they start listing things like “your smile, its really pretty” or “you’re so smart, and you’re fun to be around” instead of something about how their body looks sexy or some shit they always get instead.
this leads to confusion, because someone never acted like this for yan before. how were they supposed to react? that moment was when their heart truly skipped a beat because of someones words, their darlings words felt so warm and genuine it made them shiver.
id also like to think theyd have a huuuuugeeee ego, also really possessive. but once they get close to their darling or just see them they turn into a golden retriever type, ready to do anything and everything, kill anyone and everyone for you.
sorry if its not comprehensive its 3 am, i dont have my glasses on and im just really excited after reading ur writings 🧍‍♂️
broski. i love this.
just an absolute player (i think???) of a yandere and uber rich (LOVE yanderes with money) and a massive slut
one night stands every night, always getting their ego stroked, always sexualizing themselves and others and then they meet... you <3 you compliment their smile, their laugh, the things they say, everything and it makes them completely fall for you and when you refuse to have sex with them because theyre obviously drunk and well, you're an ethical person, that just makes them want you more.
finding you is easy, throw enough money at a problem and itll solve itself. and being a rich socialite is hard and they completely lack in the 'social' part so they just.. show up. work, school, where ever and follow you around, questioning you and if anyone makes you do something, the brattiness comes out.
"y/n! you were suppose to finish this ages ago! would you please stop talking to your friend and get to work on this? c'mon! we can't keep letting you slack off!"
"ah, sorr-"
"no, no, who is this? who are you? you know what, i dont care, you are no longer important to me, leave." they make a shooing motion, turning back to you with a smile. "you wanna go shopping? have lunch? travel? anything you want, its on m-"
"hey! you cant just ignore me! im gonna have to ask you to le-"
the yandere turns around, standing at their full height to properly glare at your boss/teacher. "cut me off again and i will cut out your tongue." they snap their fingers, summoning the person thats always following them around. "escort whoever the fuck this is out, im talking to someone and theyre being a bitch."
as the curses and yells of your boss/teacher rapidly fade, the yandere turns back to you, grinning. "so! did you decide yet?"
ohhh, i hope you love getting spoiled because this socialite will do it constantly. food, jewelry, perfume, clothes, companies, electronics, anything you want? its yours as long as you keep giggling when they say stupid shit.
and just imagine how cute they look when they see you! beaming, glowing with love, desperately trying to impress you all of the time, just so so cute! and if you praise them, i can already see them struggling to hide their moans of pleasure and spend the rest of the day on cloud nine
if you work, theyll get you fired so you can spend all your time with them. if you go to school, theyll get enrolled to or enroll you in online classes and you will rarely spend a moment without them at your side, willing to do absolutely anything for you.
now, i dont think this yandere would be possessive like others! they demand others to praise you, to compliment you, acknowledge you constantly and appreciate your beauty but one wrong comment and theyre tied up in a guest house, being hunted like a drugged up tiger. they post pictures of you near constantly, showing off how amazing you are, forcing everyone to basically bow to your feet and yeah, they get a bit culty with it sometimes but hey! it could be worse!

So I may or may not have started another list of notes for the first season or RWBY. It’s a habit okay-
Full disclosure I only started writing at like episode 7 or 8 so my notes aren’t comprehensive, nor do they address anything in particular. They’re just thoughts I felt the need to write down. That being said;
The moon is fucking oblong. Aside from having parts missing, that is (unless that’s supposed to be reflections and the moons not full. But it’s still oblong???)
Since all the teams’ names start with the leaders name, if Weiss were to lead the team I think a cool name would be WYBR (said wihb-er)
Some of the sound design is… not great. Most of the effects are too loud or too highly pitched. The music is good though!
How does evil dude talk normally with that massive cigar in his mouth?
AHAHA WEISS’ SCAR DOESNT MATCH UP WHEN SHE CLOSES HER EYE
Jean is really annoying. I know he’s stupid for comedic purposes but it happens too much, and his voice is also irritating. So is Ruby’s but at least she’s not dumb so I can excuse it more
Some of the scenes are kind of weird. Case one: episode 9 scene 1. There’s more but that’s the one I’m at right now. Some other scenes have that same sort of… feel? I don’t know how to explain it
Ahaha I’m wondering if that cup of coffee is just part of Ozpins character model. I don’t think I’ve seen him without it yet
When they say “our planet” it admits that they’re advanced enough that they know the concept but how do the kingdoms work. How are there only four? We don’t have a world map, and the one they showed us looked about the scale of your standard European map. Do they just claim a bunch of territory? But not do much with it? And against who, the grimm? They’re not going to respect national boundaries-
Are they implying Mr Peter is a pedophile? Also where did the cage come from. Why is the beast only now being rowdy-
Is Ozpin fucking omnipotent? Why is he everywhere, doesn’t he have anything better to do?
When did they change. Why did they change. There’s a uniform for a reason? Don’t you wear it during all school hours?
AHAHA JAUNDICE HAHAHA
Why do the teachers here drink so much
Fort Castle? That’s uncreative
Wow do they have noticeable stage posture
Jean is a little less annoying now
“You need to be wider and lower to the ground” what, does she want him to squat?
Isn’t it a liiiitle weird for the only even moderately dark person in the show to be the stowaway monkey guy
How did they know Penny is from out of town. She has no accent, and Vale seems to be racially homogeneous, so how do they know?
The jokes can be pretty funny sometimes (case one: “she does like tuna a lot”)
All the streets look exactly the same. No city is that perfectly planned
I really wish penny’s stockings (?) were pants. They’re really odd
I am loving that cane gun. I wish my cane had a gun (for legal reasons that is a joke)
Why is Weiss suddenly nice to Blake again. Did all her character development happen offscreen? Why?

It’s Audio Drama Sunday and this week was full of bangers! This list is not comprehensive but it is what stuck out this week. Let’s goooooooo
🔥 The Heart Pyre continuously leaves me with the perfect impression of being in middle school reading under my desk. It’s so good it feels like I’m getting away with something. Maybe it’s because Rena is such a relatable protagonist. She’s just a normal girl! She’s just a little teen! What is she supposed to do! And that makes her even more heroic. As always, the choice this week was impossible and I can’t wait to see how it shakes out. Also, Logan And Finn Should Kiss 2k24. @theheartpyre
🗡️ SIDEQUESTING 😭 This episode is so SWEET. I love when Rion grows a little—Sidequesting is episodic and doesn’t lend itself to like, substantial character development. That is fine; it’s not the point of the show. It makes the moments Rion does grow, though, stand out like little jewels. This episode shone. @sidequestingpod
🗝️ Palimpsest is doing its slow burn thing, referencing itself over again as its name suggests it will do, and in this story, I am Very Concerned About That Man Lenore Married. He is condescending and dismissive and he is isolating her, and I DO NOT TRUST HIM.
📼 Within the Wires—oh my gosh, I literally screamed when the canned noises stopped. What is your game, Tony? What do you want with Brian?
🅿️ Podcube was short this week—Podcube is always short—but this episode had me cracking up at work. I love that this team manages to find new conflicts somehow. Man vs man, but they’re assassins and one of them is convinced the other is in love with the target. Why does this work? Why is this so funny? Please listen to Podcube. @podcube
🩸 Hemophobia continues to make my skin crawl. This episode reveals that the characters are Church of Christ, which, for those who don’t know, means they have a really specific set of beliefs about baptism that I KNOW are going to be perfect fodder for the Horrors. And yet it’s all so normal so far. Creepy. Oh, another thing this episode does is portray with perfect gut-wrenching clarity how strange and awful it us to be a devout teenager, and in like, four different ways. Incredible work.
🎣 Eeler’s Choice has some FANTASTIC sound design this episode as Ran comes into their own as a storm chanter—FRICK. I am worried about them. And their new ship. Please be careful and don’t get eaten by fungus. @eelerschoice
✨ Stories from Ylelmore is brand new and SO GOOD, oh my gosh, I am in love with the earnest delivery, the characters who are absolute BABIES, the genuine fascinating mystery. I can’t wait for more. @storiesfromylelmore
🍔 Midnight Burger’s THREE HOUR FINALE brought us home with Clementine. It wasn’t what I expected, and I think that’s kind of Midnight Burger’s MO. The fact that the tone of the dialogue, that the characters themselves, are so cynical and hard—it will trick you into believing that it’s a cynical show. Maybe it is! But it also fights over and over again for the idea that things can be fixed, that love matters, that you can save people and you have to try, you always have to try. And sometimes you win. And that’s how the universe is meant to work. It kills me every time. Also, shoutout to Alan Burgon, always the best, who I love to hear doing his actual accent. @midnightburgr
🐦‍⬛ Leaving Corvat. Oh my word. It’s a wellness cult. Sleeper’s in a wellness cult. I am really pleased with the development his character’s showing, being decisive and brave.
🍵 Gastronaut is going some places and I am OBSESSED. The relationship between Oscar and Polity is everything to me, and the fact that Oscar has gotten to the point where he refuses to ignore his responsibilities, he refuses to leave people behind—he is sometimes stupid, but he is trying and I’m proud of him.
🧟‍♂️ We are getting to the final episode of Precious Cargo in the Dead and y’all….it’s gonna get juicy. I’m not exaggerating, one of the zombie actors used watermelon to get things sounding juuuuust right. Our next story might be even better, too, I can’t wait to show you.
Thank you for reading! If you like what I do, buy me a ko-fi!

any new Star Wars essays in the making, or are you moving on?
I don't know, honestly.
Part of it is "life gets in the way," I'm working a lot and so whatever time I have left is spent just messing around or meeting with my loved ones.
I've got a bunch of stuff in my drafts. I don't mind sharing it here, most recent to oldest:
Sort of a joke post of me pointing out how stressful being George Lucas' producer must've been, like this guy really DIDN'T WANT to write his fucking scripts, did he? Poor Rick McCallum. Abandoned because who gives a crap.
'Ask' reply on how EU-fueled fandom perception of the Jedi was flipped by the prequels.
'Ask' reply about the themes in Ahsoka and why the show doesn't know what it's about. Problem is, I go about it starting from the basics, so nobody's gonna sit through reading a tematic breakdown of the first Pirates of the Carribean movie, The Batman and the original six Star Wars films before I even get to the show at hand.
"Part II" post about what Ahsoka, Rebels and TCW get right about lightsaber duels, which the Prequels never did.
Quote collection & analysis on just how complex the Prequels were meant to be (in the late 80s, Lucas intimated that the Sequels were the story that was supposed to have gray morality, not the Prequels)
Quote collection on how the themes and principles of Star Wars align with Lucas' own opinions and philosophies.
Quote collection on Lucas defining Anakin's flaws.
Quote collection on Lucas talking about the fact that we need to be more proactive, which aligns with what Lumi points out sometimes about the Jedi: they should've been more politically engaged because we all should be.
Why I approach Lucas as "word of god".
Personal life/joke-y post dating from the time of the WGA strike about how Jack Black's School of Rock lyrics "In his heart he knew, the artist must be true, but the legend of the rent was way past due!" applied to me. Abandoned because I didn't wanna bum everyone out.
Correcting the notion that Dark Times-era Jedi such as Kanan or Ezra or Ahsoka represent what Jedi were supposed to be.
A comprehensive end-all outlook on how Anakin's flaws all tie together. I've written this one twice and I don't know how to differentiate it from my other posts.
A secret "Part 3" to my TLJ Luke post, in which I point out that RJ's being too "indie", while being a strong point for a big chunk of the film, hampers the film's ability to make Luke feel as badass as he does on paper. I want to illustrate a storyboard for this one, but that takes time.
The evolution of Star Wars' approach to transmedia.
Debunking Star Wars myths: a (very) comprehensive outlook on children in the Jedi Order.
Problem is that only like 2/3rds of these are fully-written... and I still need to find the relevant clips, turn them into GIFs, etc etc.
There's many other interesting Asks in my inbox btw. But I'm already behind on all these, so I haven't begun to touch them.
Then there's the drawings.
I wanna draw a comic of the meeting between Yoda and Dooku in Dark Rendezvous. I wanna finish the comic fight between Maul and Ben. I wanna draw Mace, Shaak Ti, I've got a Luminara fan-art that was supposed to be ready for Jedi June 2022 and an Anakin drawing that looks weird. No time, nor am I skilled enough. (Like, I trace, that's what I do, it's not a secret I've said so before... but it takes me a long while to do so. I'm not fast at drawing, let alone coloring.) I could commission some of these, but there are obvious obstacles there.
There's fun tidbits I've discovered here and there but nobody will care about them and I usually try to not drown my blog with bs posts.
Then there's the bigger problem.
All the things I've listed above? I'm not 100% motivated to finish. But a lot of the new stuff I wanna write about is hella negative.
I had a lot of stuff I wanted to say about Ahsoka. But it wasn't all good. It was mostly me bitching, be it about the show or the fandom's reactions to it.
I've also got more stuff to say about Filoni's take on Star Wars, but I've talked about why it's inaccurate like 8 times already, and I don't actually dislike the guy, like there's plenty of things he knows and does that I think are awesome but also people won't stop putting him and his takes on a pedestal and--
oh shit, there's Acolyte too, I forgot about that, gray morality galore, here we come. But here too, like... I've talked a couple of times about why this entire gray morality thing is actually just the gen X-ers trying to make the prequels "cool" and "complex". but I've never explored properly, with quotes and research and shit. but i've talked about it so many times that at this point it'd end up like the Filoni rants, redundant. "we get it already." as if this show didn't have haters lined round the block for absolutely sexist reasons.
Don't get me started on the mountain of lies and/or idiocy that is the YouTuber Star Wars Theory.
And yet he said one thing a few months ago which struck a chord within me and it's the fact that Andor is awesome, excels on all levels because it's treated seriously, like a proper show, not a Disney Plus one... why wasn't Obi-Wan Kenobi? Why wasn't Book of Boba Fett? And I've already established multiple times that I enjoyed Kenobi (yes, including the Reva parts) and I've established that I know what they were going for in Fett and I've established that this is mainly a "Disney Plus didn't know how to structure a fucking show pre-WGA strike" issue more than anything else... but when I think about how these could've been treated instead? When I look at the characterizations and emotional stakes of like Fargo Season 5? It's infuriating. Because it's not bad (talking about Kenobi, BOBF is awful)... but it could've been EXCELLENT and instead it was just "okay" to "good".
I just miss live action lightsaber duels, man. Like, good ones.
and i dunno. maybe I should just let it rip on all this. "go off, king!"
but I think there's so much negativity re: Star Wars that adding my thoughts on these subjects, no matter how structured and reason, will just blend into a wave of needless, un-constructive hate.
maybe I should finish the writings in the drafts and just post them with no gifs, maybe just still images?
but doing any of that feels like a step back.
So that's where I'm at right now.

Usami!
usami ⇢ do you have any pet peeves related to writing?
I am someone who has read a LOT of fanfiction, so I have a pretty comprehensive list:
No paragraph breaks. It's just one huge chunk of text. All the dialogue is also in one huge paragraph, even thought it's supposed to have a break every time a different person is speaking!! Recently, I don't even read something that's written this way. I just leave it.
I don't like works that have a super overpowered main character, where the only reason people like them is because it's them, and where no matter what you do, it's resolved by their plotarmour. I used to love eleceed, but dropped because of this reason.
In my own writing, I used to write a very 'umm, actually!' type of MC. She'd be super cool, blue hair, very sassy, the kind of person that would be like 'but no... i just HAD to get myself into this mess!' this is public enemy number 1.
A person who adds diverse characters, but poorly. Like I have seen countless examples of Spanish people randomly speaking terrible Spanish, cringe where they literally start singing DESPACITO. Or the chubby side character's only characterization being they are chubby and always hungry. Etc, etc!

Stuff I'm Reading That I Love
(and you should read them too)
December 2022
Here’s stuff I’ve recently read, or am reading, that stands out to me, and I wanted to recommend. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the good stories I’ve read lately, but a few that are worth sharing!
Plus, the more of you that read and love and leave the authors some love, the more likely it is that these lovely stories will make it to completion! No ulterior motives at all here…
(Also, if you know these authors are on Tumblr, but they're not tagged, please let me know, or let them know or something, so I can be friends with them and tag them!)
The Meaning of Inevitable Series by (Mendeia)  If you haven’t been reading this series, you’re missing out, I promise. Mendeia is a master storyteller!
The first four books are complete, and the fifth is in progress.
Words: 470,673   Works: 4   Complete:No
Eleven-year-old Peter Parker's world is shattered when both his idol and his uncle are killed in the same week. Even while grieving, Peter strikes up a friendship with the local maintenance man, Tony, who shares Peter's love of science and technology - and who may be more than he lets on.
the ghost at the back of your closet by niniblack (48238 words)  This one is so hard sometimes, but also amazing, and I'm always at the edge of my seat!
Published:2022-06-10  Updated:2022-11-05  Words:48238  Chapters:9/?:
Some set-up: Tony survived Endgame, obv, but with a long recovery time. He’s fine now! But skrull!Fury still got ahold of EDITH and gave it to Peter on his Euro Trip, so we’re picking up after Peter was arrested in NWH.
I'm waiting and fading and floating away by lemonlillybee (21701 words):  This one is an expanded Whumptober story, and is very whumpy! (But with lots of comfort, too) Lemonlillybee's whole Whumptober set is so impressive!
Published: 2022-10-17   Completed: 2022-11-03   Words: 21701   Chapters: 5/5
“Sleep deprivation,” Bruce whispers to Tony the next morning. “And maybe something else. I don’t know how long it’s going to last.”
Peter hears the words, but he’s too busy pacing to really process them.
@lemonlillybee
Fostering Hope  Series by happyaspie  The first and second stories are complete, and are amazing, but I hear there’s more to come!
Words: 96,213   Works:2   Complete:No
“Not much of a talker is he,” Tony casually stated, making Peter stomach churn with unease. He had no idea where the man was going with his assessment and wasn’t really sure how to properly defend himself. Thankfully, he didn’t have to.
“Peter has what they call selective mutism,” the social worker replied. “So, no. I suppose he’s not much of a talker.”
@yes-i-am-happyaspie
For We are Bound by Symmetry  by kingdomfaraway (21834 words) I love a good biodad AU, and this one has been fantastic so far!
Published: 2022-11-18    Updated: 2022-12-12   Words: 31840   Chapters: 6/?
“I know we just met, Peter, but Tony is just down the hall and so very excited to finally meet you."
She was wrong, of course, Tony Stark was not excited to meet him. If he was excited to meet him, he would have met him at some point in his 13 years of life. Not now, not only after he had nowhere else in the world to go. Now he’s just stuck with him, unable to pretend Peter didn't exist, as he'd done since the day he was born.

Chase You Down Until You Love Me by OK_ButWhy1 (17448 words): Love love love love.
Published: 2022-06-25    Updated: 2022-11-29    Words: 29281    Chapters: 8/?
Just who is this teenage boy that Tony Stark takes to get ice-cream?
Peter-gets-outed-as-Tony's-kid trope. Featuring: paparazzi and public backlash, Pepper Potts being her gloriously competent self and teeth-rotting IronDad/SpiderSon fluff.
Irreplaceable by for_the_night (40044 words): This one is so sad, but so good!
Published: 2022-04-07   Updated: 2022-11-29   Words: 46193   Chapters: 11/?
It starts with a cancelled lab session. Then two. Then three.
When Peter finally plucks up the courage to ask what he’s done wrong, he finds another kid in the lab with Tony. The teen feels a pang of hurt seeing the pair laughing and joking together, but the fatal blow is seeing Tony ruffle the boy's hair.
Tony doesn’t hate Peter. He’s replaced him.
Men of Iron by spdrmain (41899 words) This one is super interesting! The author is doing a great job with this AU!
Published: 2022-10-24    Updated: 2022-12-04   Words:66672  Chapters: 8/?
At four years old, Nathan Stark, Tony's only son, was found dead months after being kidnapped. What happened to him during that time, and how he died remains a mystery. Ten years later, Ben Parker is shot dead under suspicious circumstances. His nephew, Peter, is adamant to catch his killer. Two deaths, a decade apart, and a war on the horizon - there lies only one truth.
little pieces of home by  mysterycyclone and seekrest (14202 words): More Spideychelle than Irondad, but a really interesting take, pretty AU-ish, and very interesting so far!
Published:  2022-02-02   Completed: 2022-11-17    Words: 14202   Chapters: 5/5
“You still really suck at lying,” Michelle says. She checks her phone. “You’ve still got time for lunch before work, right?”
Peter checks his phone. Eleven in the morning. “Yeah, I totally have time.”
He doesn’t really have time, but he makes it. He has to make it.
He’s missed them. He’s going to make time for them.
@mysterycyclone @seek--rest
the long game by niniblack (19377 words) This one is rough (for me), but so, so good so far.

The biodad au where Peter gets arrested for selling drugs, and that actually improves his life.
@niniblack
The Grey Area by Lansfics7 (121895 words) Lansfics7 is hilarious, and this story is super interesting, and I’m definitely enjoying it!
Published: 2022-07-06   Updated: 2022-11-23    Words:121895   Chapters:10/?
Peter’s in college, rooming with his best friend Harry Osborn, crushing on his partner in crime, MJ, and making fast friends with Ned Leeds and Gwen Stacy. He's living the dream, interning at Stark Industries under a watchful eye of (mentor???) Tony Stark. But he has his hands full as Spider-Man with a gang spreading fear in the streets of New York, putting civilians at risk and bankrupting the city. Peter is determined to do whatever it takes to stop them, even if that means going in over his head when the web of lies and greed turns out to be way more than he signed up for.
Understanding the Spiderling series by AthingcalledR has been really great so far!
Words: 79,606  Works:2  Complete: No
Peter Parker is a homeless orphan who dedicates as much time as he can to helping the people of New York.
Then he gets hit by a car :D
As Tony Stark and Pepper Potts try to learn more about the troubled young man, Peter tries to reconcile himself with the painful act of letting people into his life.
@athingcalledr
but only hope and sorrows end by iron_spider Recently complete, and is insane, but amazing. Fantastic. Highly recommend!
This is going to be a rough one. It has a child in danger, kidnappings, experiments which feel like torture to those who are enduring them, and long periods of being trapped and presumed dead. It spans over a decade. It is a Hydra fic, an AU about the origins of Spider-Man and Iron Man. Please plan accordingly, but always know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Long Story Short (It Was A Bad Time) Or AIs Don't Forget by peacockgirl (70140 words): My one true love, haha. She’s been adding to this fantastic story, and every chapter is a treasure!
Published:  2021-12-21   Completed: 2022-12-07   Words: 77440    Chapters:14/14
Turns out magic doesn't affect AIs. Karen is Peter's only link to his old life, and helps him hold on when he gets low.
Meanwhile, in Upstate New York, Tony struggles with the inexplicable certainty that he's lost a kid.
Until Peter gets hurt, and Karen tells FRIDAY ...
Set in that wonderful AU world where Tony survives Endgame, and our boy (eventually) gets all the hugs he needs and deserves.
And, finally, a less recent author, not writing for Irondad anymore, but I just binged pretty much anything by Sahiya recently, and it's all amazing. (thanks @junker5 for that recommendation!)

Learn to Love you
Chapter 4/? Ch1 Ch2 Ch3 Ch5
yandere!Childe/reader
CW: general yandere themes, kidnap, toxic relationship Word Count: 4,292 Note: Childe is a sweet yandere. Reader is a (cis) woman.
Also on AO3
Tumblr media
You had decided that your new favorite way of spending the evening was with Childe, specifically in a tub of hot water. You sat between his legs, back resting against his chest. The low rumble of his idle humming reverberated through your bones. Childe’s arms loosely fell around your torso, but the warm water of the bath embraced you in places that Childe could not. The low candlelight of the bathroom gave your senses a much-needed rest.
After several minutes of near-silent bliss, you look up. Even upsidedown, you were surprised to see Ajax lost in thought. He looked off into the distance, far away from where he rested with you.
“I did not take you for the kind of person to overthink things,” you say breaking the near silence.
Childe paused his gentle hum and met your eyes staring up at him. He smiled, placing a chaste kiss on your forehead.
“I suppose not. I was only reflecting. Any warrior worth his salt has a mind to back up his brute strength.”
Childe laughed lightly, but you had the feeling that was not all. The insertion of battle proverbs only furthered your suspicions.
You broke the tension of the water, watching as the rings rippled across the surface.
“May I be privy to the inner workings of a human weapon, then?” Your tone was teasing and light. You would not let fear of the unknown throw you into the icy depths of anxiety.
Childe resumed his soft humming, considering your request. He lightly caressed your arms under the water. If you both stayed submerged much longer, your skin would look like prunes.
“You know,” Childe started, voice low, “I was planning on waiting longer.”
Ah, so that was it. You recalled his hesitation, and if your mind was a little more awake, perhaps you would have been worrying about it already.
“What? Saving yourself for marriage?” you teased, playfully poking his chest. His counterattack was sweetly kissing the top of your head once again.
“No,” he replied, “I just wanted to wait until you actually loved me back.”
Oh.
You could not even begin to describe the awkward silence that followed that.
The lack of hesitation caught you off guard. Had you hit a nerve? What were you even supposed to say to that?
You turned to face him. Childe was sorrowful, but–again–that was not all there was to it.
“For all the months I have been here and for everything you know about me, I hardly know anything about you,” you say reassuringly. “I let you love me, right? Maybe you should let me love you too.”
Ajax seemed to perk up at this. He tightened his grip around you and nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck.
“That sounds agreeable to me,” he said before pulling away. “But I am forgetting something. Look at me.”
You turned fully around to meet his eyes. Childe pulled his hand from the water and ran a damp finger down your cheek. His eyes were fiery, filled to the brim with an unidentifiable emotion.
“I love you,” Ajax said. The warmth in his voice punctuated all three syllables. The words rang in your ears.
Of course. He’s never said them outright.
You do not reply but lean in to kiss him for about the hundredth time tonight. You could not earnestly say you loved him back, nor were you truly sure Childe loved you. He was certainly obsessed, and perhaps, he had all the pieces to love you. Almost all of them.
You wondered if he could truly love you outside of his control. Conversely, you numbly considered if it would be possible to love him if you had no choice.
No, you had a choice regardless of his control. You had chosen to go this far with him, why not choose to love him too?
“Don’t say it back until you mean it, alright?” Childe said after a moment. “That would be unforgivable.”
Ajax was back to his usual cheery self, but you could not help but shiver. You wondered if he had a comprehensive list of what would make you ‘unforgivable.’ You certainly did not want to find out any time soon.
“Let’s just go to bed,” you say, rising from the water, “or you’ll catch a cold.”
“Excellent idea, my love.”
-
The air in the house was different. Cracking a window to let a room breathe was not enough to lift the weight of each breath. It was typical for you to carry the burden of anxiety, but you had yet to place a finger on the new prevailing sense of dread. There were simply too many variables.
You were sitting alone as the moon had replaced the sun completely. The dull flickering of the table lantern made the shadows on the wall dance as you waited in the bedroom for Childe’s return. The rhythmic tapping of your fingers against the bedside table filled the room as you stole ever frequent glances at the clock. You made a feeble effort to focus on one of the new novels Childe had brought you, but who were you kidding?
You knew you were stubborn waiting up for Childe instead of just going to bed. Perhaps Childe would fail to even return tonight? It seemed that you had woken up alone often lately. Every morning without Childe left you feeling on edge despite everything. You knew you should be feeling relieved; perhaps he was getting bored of you. The idea of that made you shiver, but you pushed betraying thoughts of your mind. There was no use speculating.
Instead, you refocused your attention on the book. You read the words, but as you trailed down the page, you found you had no idea what was going on. Maybe if you just closed your eyes for a moment…
Childe ran his hand sweetly down your back, pulling you out of feeble sleep.
“Childe?” you called out softly, whipping your eyes open. You were surprised to find yourself under a blanket, your book neatly placed on the table.
“Sorry to wake you, love,” Childe said apologetically. “You looked so peaceful.”
You look up under tired lids. “I was waiting for you. What time is it?”
Childe furrowed his brow but smiled back sheepishly.
“Pretty much dawn at this point.”
You glanced out the window to see warm purple fill the sky rather than the deep blue you saw only a moment ago.
“There’s food downstairs,” you reply, turning to face him, “but it’s definitely cold by now.”
“Ah, you go to so much trouble for me. I would hate to waste that effort, but I would rather go to bed with you now. Perhaps we could come back to this in the morning…? Or I suppose later in the morning.”
Childe let out a casual laugh, sneaking his arm around your waist as he pulled you close to him. Despite his usual cheerful disposition, you could see the exhaustion in his bags under his eyes punctuated with sorrow. Was he really so disappointed to refuse your cold dinner? That was nothing out of the ordinary.
“Of course,” you reply, nuzzling closer to him, “it’s not wasted effort.”
“Your patience will reward you someday.” You were used to Childe’s adages, but perhaps a version of you in the past would have found this ominous.
The heaviness of sleep weighed down your lids, but you forced yourself awake. You were not quite ready to sleep again. Not with the tension you had been holding gripping you without repose.
“Ajax?” you asked innocently after a few minutes of silence. Childe’s eyes fluttered open, his soft breathing pausing.
“Yes, love?” His tone was warm, but you could sense his exhaustion. You did not want to dwell on what he must have been doing to come home near dawn.
“I was just curious about something,” you say cautiously, tracing the seam of his shirt delicately. “Why have you been coming home so late recently?”
You attempted to hide the true intentions of this question, trying to play it off as innocent curiosity. Childe hesitated before answering, though.
“I’m not avoiding you, baby,” Childe settled on finally. Yep, he had seen right through you. He placed a gentle kiss on your forehead before continuing. “I am wrapping up my mission here before we return to Snezhnaya. You will have me all to yourself soon.”
Childe punctuated his reply with a grin, and his response made enough sense. Yet you could not shake the feeling that there was more to it. Maybe it was foolish to prod, but you felt like playing the fool.
“Not all to myself, right? I’ll have to share you with your family.”
You could feel the resonance of Childe’s low chuckle run its course through your entire body.
“Hmm, yes–I suppose that’s true. But another way to think of it is that I’ll have to share you.”
This reassured you, though it sent up a cold chill up your spine.
“Good point,” you replied, “you had better tell me all of your embarrassing secrets soon. Otherwise, I’ll find out the fun way.”
You expected Childe to laugh or just smile and hold you tighter. Instead, he was silent. The hand he had been running through your hair froze. Was what you said out of line? You ran the words through your head as you looked up from his chest to meet his eyes.
Ajax’s pensive expression was a far cry from the peaceful one wore before. It was absolutely impossible to read to make matters worse. He must have felt your body tense because he quickly turned his attention back to you, pulling you closer.
“Sorry, love,” Ajax said finally, giving you a comforting squeeze, “you just reminded me of something I wanted to bring up.”
You relaxed a little knowing that you did not ostensibly offend him.
“It can wait until later,” you replied, “let’s talk in the morning… later in the morning.”
You echoed Childe’s words in an effort to calm the building tension in the pit of your throat and convinced yourself to shelf the agenda for now. You forced spiraling thoughts out of your mind; thoughts of what Childe would possibly want to bring up about his family. You definitely did not allow yourself to consider the possibility that he did not want you anymore.
Ajax kissed your cheek softly. His affectionate smile returned, though briefly interrupted by a pointed yawn.
“I don’t deserve you,” Ajax said simply, drifting off to sleep again.
You said nothing.
-
Eventually, the sun rose once more, and you found yourself in the homey kitchen with Ajax making breakfast. You were pleased to consider this normal. You were also pleased that you did not wake up alone again.
Ajax had insisted on making breakfast for you despite your insistence otherwise. You felt a twinge of guilt for accusing him of avoiding you last night, but Ajax refused to let you make it up to him.
“I want to make you something special today,” he said.
“Fine, but let me help.”
You placed your hands tenderly over his, giving them an encouraging squeeze. He halving strawberries. Ajax relented, handing the knife to you. You quickly got to work nimbly slicing and coring each one. You hoped that the bright, red juice that coated your fingertips would wash away with a little soap rather than staining you indefinitely.
“I will take any opportunity to work hand in hand with you, love.” Ajax was pleased as he got to work on mixing batter and heating up the stove. It was pleasant and even peaceful to work as a team with Childe as he chattered away.
“All done!” Childe exclaimed gleefully, placing the plate in front of you.
He had arranged the strawberries that you halved along the plate, framing the golden pancakes artfully along the dish.
“Ah, thank you. It looks delicious.” You replied, returning his contagious smile.
Ajax took the seat beside you rather than across from you today. His warmth radiated down your side. It was comforting.
“This is how we make them back home! They may taste a little different at first, but I think that you will like them. We make a great team, wouldn’t you say?” He laughed to himself.
You meant it when you said that it looked delicious not to mention the sweet aroma that filled the kitchen and made it feel like home. The golden crust of the batter was toasted to the ideal temperature, and the edges were crispy. The juice of the strawberries slowly permeated the pores of the cake, ensuring a sweet delivery. It looked perfect. And yet you poked at it, hesitating.
After a few minutes of picking at your plate, Ajax spoke up. He was already nearly done.
“Is there something wrong, love?” he said, brows furrowed in concern. “I can make you something else.”
Childe had made you food numerous times, and you had accepted it without problem before. Why now did it feel like admitting defeat?
“No thanks,” you reply softly after a moment.
You proved your point by taking a bite. The texture was perfect, and the flavor of the berries permeated throughout the batter. You nodded in approval, and Ajax seemed satisfied. You could not shake the sinking feeling you felt, however.
“Baby, it won’t offend me if you dislike it. The only way for me to make something that suits you is brutal honesty. Don’t hold back.”
Despite the somewhat scolding nature of his words, Ajax was as sunny as ever. You pushed through your uncertainty and allowed yourself to enjoy. It was tasty, no doubt. A few more minutes passed before Childe spoke up again.
“About last night,” he started, “I wanted to talk to you about my family.”
You were pleased that he broached the subject again, saving you the embarrassment.
“Yes, what about them?”
Ajax’s expression fell subtly, but he never let his smile escape him. You were not sure who he was keeping this up for, you or himself. He rubbed his neck sheepishly before continuing.
“I need to ask you a big favor. Actually, it’s an enormous burden I’m asking you to carry.”
It wouldn’t be the first time.
Swatting away the invading thoughts, you simply hum in reply.
“I wish that things were more straightforward with my family,” Childe continued, his expression growing more painful with each word, “but for now, it must be this way. I’ve told you about my siblings, and while the older ones know of my position as a harbinger, the youngest one–Teucer–doesn’t need to know yet.”
You nodded in agreement. It was interesting that childhood innocence was where Childe drew the line of depravity. But you agreed on principle.
“That’s not a great burden, Ajax. Of course I can agree to that,” you say, reaching out to hold his hand. Childe did not yet look relieved.
“That’s not all,” he said, avoiding your gaze.
“What else? Don’t look at your baby photos?” You tried to keep your tone light-hearted, but the tension was killing you.
Childe smiled feebly, but the shame on his face was clear.
“About our situation…” Ajax paused, grasping for words. He then turned his gaze back to you and took your hands in his. The cozy, warm atmosphere of the kitchen had flipped on its head. You could not tolerate much more tension.
“I don’t beg for anything, and I rarely even ask. But I am begging you. Please don’t tell my family about our circumstances, at least not the kids.”
Ajax’s eyes were pleading. Despite everything, you had never seen him so vulnerable, desperate. The intensity did not help your nerves. Words were lost to you, though, as you were wide-eyed and staggered by the sight of Childe before you.
He continued, “I’ve already told you how important it is for me to protect my siblings. But Mama would be horrified, and Papa… I don’t know how much more I could disappoint him.”
Ajax’s pleading had begun to sink in, and you saw no other choice but to agree. You did not want to find out what would happen if you failed to.
“I won’t say anything,” you reply finally, squeezing Childe’s hand in comfort. Even if you had little choice, you felt no regrets to ease his worries. The relief of Ajax’s smile eased your worries as well.
“There are no words to thank you, so I will have to show you my gratitude in action.” Ajax was getting fired up again as he cleared the table, placing your empty plate in the soapy basin.
-
As the week went by, you prepared the house for your departure to Snezhnaya. Packing clothes and what few sentimental items you had was easy, relaxing even. However, once the day came you felt entirely unprepared.
The humidity of the harbor air was dramatically different than the mountain you had hesitantly called home the past several months. The days had blurred together so much you had no idea how late it was in the year already. The song of the seabirds filled you with sick nostalgia. Your stomach turned as you saw the familiar faces of the vendors along the street. You failed to avoid thinking about how you worked just a few blocks away less than a year ago.
You felt cool raindrops tap your coat and the now foreign sound of footsteps in a busy street. If you wanted, you could pretend it was springtime rain rather than the call of Autumn. You knew the street was not any busier than in your memories, but for some reason, the idle drone of conversations that ran together and the laughter of children by the docks caused all of your nerves to fire at once. You felt numb and on fire simultaneously. You noticed too late that you needed to control your breathing lest you hyperventilate.
Childe had his arm around your shoulder casually, as if you did this every day. His grip was firm though not ironclad. You could shrug out of it should you wish. The shock waves of anxiety did not shield you from thoughts of screaming. If you wanted to, you could alert everyone in the street to your predicament. If you wanted to.
The thoughts blew by like a storm, rattling your shutters. They threatened to blow you away. You could feel yourself shaking though, despite the drizzle, it was not too cold. If not for the rain, you would not need a jacket. You idly wondered if anyone who passed by had recognized you, or if everyone had forgotten you. Surely you would have noticed a missing person poster, right? Did Childe spin some lie about where you had been?
‘No, everyone at the bank is terrified of him.’ Your co-workers, at least, would see right through it. Had your family noticed you had not written in months?
Even if you screamed for help, would anyone stop to save you? Everyone in the harbor knew who Childe was, and some may be aware of what he was capable of. That was a piece of knowledge you did possess. You shuddered thinking about what would happen if anyone tried to stop him.
As each step carried you closer and closer to your fate, your heart rate picked up pace exponentially. Before you knew it, you were gasping for air in the middle of the street. Childe’s grip tightened as he directed you to the nearest alleyway.
You leaned your back against the building, tears falling down your face. It was too much. Seeing your old life steps away was too much for you. Even if you screamed for help, what good would that do? You could never go back to the way things were. This experience–Childe–had changed you irreparably forever. Even if he let you go right now, what would you do?
Your silent tears had turned into gross sobbing. You had not realized Childe was calling your name before pulling you into a grounding hug. He ran his hands through your hair. You clung to him for dear life.
“Baby… it’ll be okay. I promise,” Ajax said softly.
You could barely speak. The sobs that spilled from your mouth stole away your breath. Each word that escaped you was diluted by choking. You could not catch your breath.
“Our ship isn’t leaving for another hour. Want to get something warm to drink?”
Childe’s words were tender, comforting. He wiped your tears away although the effort was futile. You rested your head on his chest, attempting to control your breathing.
“It’s too much,” you finally reply, voice hoarse. “It’s too much to be here. Let’s just go.”
Childe rubbed comforting circles into your back and kissed your head.
“Whatever you want, love,” he said.
From there you kept your head down and avoided the familiar yet blurry faces as you passed. You attempted to numb your feelings, emptying the anxiety from your mind. However, these attempts were unsuccessful as evidenced by your breath held hostage in your throat. Childe held you close, squeezing your arm in comfort as you walked. You attempted to focus on his touch, but your raw emotions kept any sort of grounding as a distant daydream.
You felt the click of your boots creek against the dock planks. You were almost to your new future. A wave of relief rushed over you as you realized your walk of panic was coming to a close. Your hyperventilation turned into soft laughter. The emulsion of emotions pulsing throughout your body made you feel hysterical. You could not pin down one thought to focus on. They rapidly fired down your fingertips, making your entire body shake. Regrettably, you were not sure how you would be able to calm your nerves for the next hour.
Once you and Childe had reached the ramp to the ship, however, he paused. You took an extra step ahead of him, eager to just get on the boat. You avoided looking up afraid that seeing anything more than the weathered old planks would send you straight back into panic mode.
“Wait,” Childe spoke up, “look at me, love…” He stepped in front of you, back to the harbor.
You were averse to the idea, but you slowly peeked up at him through your eyelashes. You could not see nor control your expression, but Ajax was furrowing his brow in concern. You said nothing but looked at him with wide eyes.
He gingerly placed each of his gloves hands on your cheeks, gently pulling you close. Under normal circumstances, you probably would have been embarrassed at even such an innocent public display of affection. Right now, though, you could not care less about anything other than getting on the ship and turning your back on this place forever.
Childe brought you into a chaste kiss. You brought your hands up to desperately cling to his wrists. Your eyes shut their watery gates, partially to keep your tears at bay though the rain likely would have masked them well at this point.
Pulling back, Childe took a deep breath looking sadly into your eyes. His empty blue eyes were solemn and analyzing. You could not decipher whether he was feeling remorse or something else entirely.
“I love you,” he whispered finally, hand still holding your cheek, brushing away the few tears that escaped your grasp. “And I won’t make you come with me. If you want to… please stay here.”
The rain dried. The water ceased its waves. The chatter of the people on the docks ceased. The world froze, dead silent as the words left Childe’s lips. You could only stare back in bewilderment.
You had no contingency plan for this reality. You desperately clung to Childe’s arms as your quaked, all the anxiety you had held today and for months pouring out at once. The panic strangled you as the world resumed its life around you. The bustle of the market and crashing of the waves against the city rocks filled your ears to the brim. Each raindrop on your nose stung, and the air avoided you, leaving you breathless.
Childe’s expression fell further.
“Sweetheart, I can take you home now. No questions asked.”
“N-no!” Your voice was strained but startlingly loud. You could not think and the words escaped your mouth through pure adrenaline. You had no filter nor control over what you said next. “Please… take me with you. I can’t stay here without you.”
Childe pulled you into a tight embrace, attempting once again to comfort your shaking frame. The tears were nonstop now.
“Please tell me if you change your mind. I won’t make you do this. I’ve asked you for so much already; I can’t make you do this.”
His voice was painful to hear. You were desperate to hear the joyful and sometimes delusional chatter of his voice, assuring you everything would be okay.
The realization set in that your charade of playing house was coming to an end. You were now stepping into the unknown. The fear did not overtake your relief that you could peacefully turn your back on the past, however.
You could learn to adjust to life with Childe, especially knowing that you chose this. He would always be by your side. You could learn to love him. You were not sure you could learn to pick up the pieces of yourself that he left behind. For that reason, you cannot let go no matter what. You have to take one step forward, one after the other into the unknown.
Hand in hand with Ajax.

Hello! Genuine question, because I don't know how and where to ask. I know there's Guilty Gear manga, but, uh... Is it long? And if there's more than one manga line/series, which one is better to start from? (Shamelessly asking for manga guide)
Don't worry about it haha Figuring out what order any of the GG stuff is supposed to be in and where to find it is like herding cats.
Short answer: It's Complicated™️
Long-ish answer: There are a bunch of manga but only 2.5 of them are in English and only about 60% of the ones solely in Japanese have been scanned. Here are the ones in English:
= The Digest comics - These are official recap summaries of the major story arcs throughout the entire series. They're on ASW's website and can be read in about one sitting. Start with this one. https://www.guiltygear.com/ggst/en/story/
= Guilty Gear Xtra - I forget what this one is actually about because I don't like it and only read it once ages ago lol. The art's alright though. Spinoff story focused on a kid named Tyr with a Gear arm? Scanlated by the Justice Revival Project. IIRC it was only two volumes, so you could probably read this in about one sitting too. Not a single thing that happens in this story is so much as referenced in the actual games. https://mangadex.org/title/911025e8-ae47-499c-8eff-453d18b6459a/guilty-gear-xtra
= Guilty Gear (1998) Comic Anthology - A collection of one-shots released a few months after the first Guilty Gear game that are focused on different characters. Some of them are serious, some comedic, a few recap important character lore. I'm currently working on translating this one and am nearing the halfway point (!!). Also relatively short, even if it was finished (it's only one volume). https://mangadex.org/title/3dde0c8d-ed85-4e16-92c0-837434f0bb58/guilty-gear-comic-anthology
As for the Japanese scans: I have a list of all the volumes, scanned and unscanned, in the masterpost linked in my pinned. It's near the very bottom: https://solradguy.tumblr.com/post/701138089295364096/comprehensive-guide-to-unofficial-guilty-gear
There are also three light novels (novellas with illustrations): Lightning The Argent, The Butterfly & Her Gale, and Begin. Begin is in English and Volcanic Fighter (& Brainchoco) are currently working on Butterfly. I'm working on LtA now but.... I keep getting distracted.... Begin can be read here: https://archive.org/details/guilty-gear-begin-english-translation
A couple of the drama CDs have been transcribed and translated too. They're in the masterpost.
Have fun!! If you know anyone that can do JP>EN translations send them to the GG fandom because the situation's dire LOL

At SDCC showrunner John D. Payne said: “So, one, always back to Tolkien. And two, when Tolkien was silent, we tried to invent as Tolkienian a way as possible." Let's see how much of this is true...
Analysis of Amazon's "The Rings of Power"
Episode 1
Galadriel is on a quest for revenge, Gil-galad ships inconvenient people into the West, and a guy falls as a meteor out of the sky?
Let's see which parts of Tolkien's worldbuilding was used by the show, where they directly contradict what Tolkien wrote about his characters, and how much of the storyline is an Amazon invention (spoiler: all of it).
Spoiler warnings for the first episode.
Preface
I wanted to write a comprehensive overview about where Amazon's show actually adapted something from Tolkien's writing in their first episode, where they contradict Tolkien's writings, and where Amazon came up with their own inventions.
What I won't get into in this analysis is
most of the visual choices of the show. The series is a visual medium, while most of Tolkien's work isn't. Therefore I won't focus on visual differences unless a) Tolkien described something explicitly or b) it is relevant for the story, character or world building.
themes within Amazon's series or Tolkien's story. The interpretation of themes is heavily subjective, as is the assessment whether it was well integrated in the series or not. In addition, it can't be checked on an episode-to-episode basis and should be evaluated rather at the end of the season.
On a side note: I am aware that the show did not have the rights to all of Tolkien's work, but it still is their decision to either not read or consciously contradict his writings.
If I have overlooked anything in this episode, please let me know.
I'll add it with credit to the list.
Worldbuilding
Where the show references Tolkien
Locations
Tolkien's map is included, although with extensions made by the show.
Locations with the names Lindon, Rhovanion, Forodwaith and Valinor are shown.
Forodwaith is shown as a region of mostly ice and snow.
In Valinor, the Two Trees and a large city are briefly shown.
The destruction of the Two Trees is briefly shown and mentioned.
Races
The races of Elves, Dwarves, Men, Hobbits, Orcs and Trolls exist.
The Elves are immortal and have pointy ears.
The Hobbits are smaller than Men or Elves.
The concept of Elves sailing form Middle-earth to Valinor exists.
History
Elves journying from Valinor to Middle-earth is mentioned.
"The war" – probably refering to the war against Morgoth in general – is briefly shown with a few images and mentioned. Finrod is briefly shown fighting in a battle against Orcs. Morgoth's defeat is mentioned.
Somen Men have sides with Morgoth in the wars ages ago.
Language
Some of Tolkien's Quenya words and grammer are used in dialogue.
Tengwar letters and Cirth runes are used on some objects and in some places.
Where the show contradicts Tolkien
Elvish character design:
Age: Some Elves, like Celebrimbor and Gil-galad, look visibly too old. tolkien described his Elves either as youthful or as ageless in his writings, they are never supposed to look like middle-aged/older people.
Hair: The Amazon series shows most of the male Elves with short hair. However, whenever Tolkien describes the hair length of an Elf, it's long. For the Noldor and the Teleri as a whole the hair was described as long at one point.
Beauty: All of Tolkien's Elves are described as exceptionally beautiful. In Amazon's series this is not the case.
History:
The Prologue claims that it was Morgoth who "destroyed the very light of [the Elves'] home", but in Tolkien's story this was done by Ungoliant.
The Prologue also implies that the Elves went to war against Morgoth because of the destruction of the Two Trees, but in Tolkien's writings the Noldor rather left to avenge Finwë's death and the theft of the Silmarils.
Another implication of the Prologue seems to be that the Noldor never had been in Middle-earth before – or that there were no Elves in Middle-earth before their journey altogether.
No word for death: In the Amazon series, Galadriel in the intro says that they had no word for death yet. In Tolkien's writings however, at the time of Galadriel's childhood the Elves had already experienced death a) in Middle-earth during the Great Journey and b) in Valinor when Míriel died. Galadriel wouldn't have been born if Míriel hadn't died, because otherwise Finwë wouldn't have married Indis. The concept of death therefore must have existed.
Who is allowed to sail west: In the Amazon series, Gil-galad seems to decide which Elves are sailing West and which don't. This is heavily contradicting Tolkien's writings, where sailing West was open for all Elves – with the possible exception of the former leaders of the Noldorin rebellion, including Galadriel. This permission or ban came from the Valar, and not from any single elf, king of no king.
Sailing to Valinor: During the 2nd Age, the passage to Valinor over the sea was, more or less, a "normal" journey on ship. No special magic was needed to get there, and in fact sailors would reach Tol Eressëa first.
Elvish supervision of Mannish villages: The Silvan Elves in Amazon's Middle-earth seem to be ruled by Gil-galad and keep watch on human settlements east of the Ash mountains. In Tolkien's writings, Gil-galad ruled in Linon and at best over Eriador in general, but certainly not further east or south, were the Silvan Elves lived. The Silvan Elves kept to themselves and refused the rule of the Noldor, except for Galadirel in Lóthlorien in the 3rd Age. There is no record of any Mannish settlement being controlled by Elves against their will.
Meteor Man: It is impossible for any Man or Elf to fall down as a meteor and survive. However, for the few Maiar that came to Midde-earth no such incident was ever reported either: Sauron was already in Middle-earth in the 2nd Age, and the Istari came by ship.
Nori's name: Nori's full name is Elanor Brandyfoot. Elanor is a Sindarin name, and therefore an unlikely name for any Hobbit (or "proto-Hobbit") unless they had contact with Sindarin speaking Elves. However, this contact with the Sindar is unlikely to have happened in the Wilderlands east of the Anduin.
Language:
In Tolkien's 2nd Age, Westron did not exist yet. Elves and Men had trouble with communication. In Amazon's 2nd Age, everyone seems to speak the same language: Elves, Men and Harfoots. If they speak different languages, it is not made clear.
Elves are shown to speak English, but every now and then they switch to Quenya. However, it does not appear that their "English" is supposed to be Sindarin, because when Elrond writes Gil-galad's speech it's in Quenya, yet later Gil-galad gives the speech in English. Unless Elrond translated the speech into Sindarin afterwards the switch between Enlish and Quenya makes no sense.
Where the show invents their own content
Tirharad: The culture, history and current situation of Tirharad and its population is an invention of the show.
Harfoot-Hobbits in the Wilderlands: The culture, lifestyle and current situation of the Harfoot-Hobbits is an invention of the show.
Elvish culture:
Veiled Elf-women are nowere described in Tolkien's writings and an invention of the show.
The Greek/Roman-looking wreath is an invention of the show.
Elves calling healers "artificers", and they "labor [...] to render hidden truths as works of beauty" in order to heal the soul is an invention of the show.
Characters
Where the show references Tolkien
Galadriel: A character with the name Galadriel exists, who lived in Valinor for a while, has an older brother (named Finrod in the credits) and who has some connection to Gil-galad and Elrond. She has long, golden hair.
Elrond: A character with the name Elrond exists. He spends time in Lindon and has connections to Gil-galad and Galadriel.
Gil-galad: A character with the name Gil-galad exists. He is High King of the Noldor and has connections to Galadriel, Elrond and Celebrimbor.
Celebrimbor: A character with the name Celebrimbor exists. He is known as a great smith and has connections to Gil-galad.
Finrod: Galadriel's older brother (named "Finrod" only in the credits) exists. He is shown in the introduction, but is no longer alive in the present time of the show.
Sauron: A character with the name Sauron is briefly shown, and described as a servant of Morgoth, as a sourcerer and leader of armies of Orcs.
Morgoth: A character with the name Morgoth existed, and is described as the Great Foe. He is only mentioned, not shown.
Where the show contradicts Tolkien
Galadriel:
Amazon's Galadriel doesn't seem to have a husband nor a daughter. In contrast, in Tolkien's writings she gets married to Celeborn soon after the 2nd Age begins, and not long after gives birth to their daughter Celebrian.
Amazon's Galadriel has apparently spent a whole age (however long) searching for Sauron. In Tolkien's writings, Galadriel resists Sauron once she is aware of his presence, but there is no record of her actively searching for him anywhere or trying to take revenge.
Amazon's Galadriel is shown sailing West, although she stops and turns around. In contrast, Tolkien's Galadriel was "the last survivor of the princes and queens who had led the revolting Noldor to exile in Middle-earth. After the overthrow of Morgoth ath the end of the First Age a ban was set upon her return, and she had replied proudly that she had no wish to do so."
Elrond:
Amazon's Elrond has light brown hair and is rather young. Tolkien describes Elrond's hair as "dark as the shadows of twilight", and at the forging of the One Ring Elrond is already over 1600 years old, and at the Downfall of Númenor even over 3000 years old.
Amazon's Elrond is not considered an Elf-lord. Given that Tolkien's Elrond is the son of Eärendil, grandson of Dior and also great-grandson of Turgon, there is no way he would not be counted among the nobility or even royalty of any Eldar society he wanders into.
Gil-galad
Amazon's Gil-galad looks older than Galadriel, although in Tolkien's writings he is from a generation younger than Galadriel, and therefore most likely younger than her.
Amazon's Gil-galad refuses to acknowledge Sauron's presence in Middle-earth. In Tolkien's writings, Gil-galad is among the first to notice Sauron's shadow, to recognise it as a threat, and to try to form alliances against it.
Amazon's Gil-galad is dressed all in gold, including gold stars. In Tolkien's writing, he is instead associated with silver and white stars.
Celebrimbor
Amazon's Celebrimbor looks too old (see above).
Galadriel's brother (Finrod)
Amazon's Finrod is killed by Sauron, after having been on a hunt for Sauron. This heavily contradicts Tolkien's writings, where Finrod was supporting his friend Beren on a mission and is killed by a wolf in Sauron's dungeon.
Amazon's Finrod seems to have a very different philosphy compared to how Tolkien has written him. In Amazon's series, when a young Galadriel asks him how to differenciate between light and darkness, Finrod's advice response is that "sometimes we cannot know until we have touched the darkness". This seems contrary to any attitude that an Elf in Valinor before Morgoth's release would have, and especially strange for an Elf like Finrod, who had a very strong belief in Eru.
Sauron
Sauron in the series is said to have gained power after Morgoth's defeat, and that he found and killed Finrod. However, in Tolkien's writings he went into hiding until he appeared in fair form at the doorstep of the Elves. Finrod was killed by Sauron's wolf before Morgoth's defeat.
Where the show invented their own content
Galadriel: Galadriel's desire for revenge, her position as a warrior in and leader of the Northern armies, the expedition to Forodwaith, the journey with the ship and the subsequent jump into the ocean are all inventions by the show. See also the contradictions.
Elrond: Elrond writing speeches for Gil-galad is an invention by the show, as is his conscious decision to ignore warnings of Sauron's presence. See also the contradictions.
Gil-galad: Gil-galad's plan to get Galariel out of the way by sending her to Valinor because she is inconvenient is an invention by the show. See also the contradictions.
All other characters not already mentioned in the character section are inventions of the show. This includes
in Lindon: Thondir
in Tirharad: Arondir, Bronwyn, Theo, Waldreg, Revion
in Rhovanion: Nori, Poppy, Sadoc, Marigold, Malva, Largo
... and naturally all the other characters in the background.
Storyline
All three storylines – Galadriel's, Arondir's and Nori's – are the show's invention and have no basis in Tolkien's writings.
Summary
Worldbuilding: The show only uses the basics for the setup of their world, but most of them can be found in many fantasy settings. When it comes to the details, the show often contradicts Tolkien.
Characters: Most of the characters are invented by the show. The characters that are inspired by Tolkien are very differently characterised in comparison to Tolkien's writings.
Storyline: All the storylines in this episode are invented by the show, they have no basis in Tolkien's writings.

If you're getting started with any kind of fiber arts project (or...uh...any project really) and you have trouble figuring out how to get started or what to do first or even what you want to do with this fiber arts yearning...
Chunk your projects.
By this I mean sit down, think about all the different steps that make up one project, and write them down. You can do this in stages, too. You could just write down what you need to do to start.
This is hands down the best thing I've learned from taking some project management courses. I use a gridded extra large moleskine because I had a 3-pack that I got for Christmas one year. Graph paper in a binder also works. Just, you probably want grids.
I suppose you can use ruled paper if you really hate tiny squares, but that's your own choice.
I like grids for fiber arts planning because I can lay out projects to scale if I need to.
The following is a page from my current WIPs and things I want to draft (probably). The top section is the important bit.
I have 3 skirts that I'm currently finishing up. Each finishing step is listed there (mostly in order) so I can just go down the row.
Tumblr media
This means I always know where I am in a project and I can pick it up and do a small section at a time. I got started on a hem facing on my lunch break today and evened the hem on another skirt.
The planning section below means I can draft something as and when I want to (as long as I don't mind clearing off the dining room table to set up my mat). I know which projects I'd like to work on and I keep a pretty big running list because variety is nice. It isn't always this...comprehensive. I've just ignored my wardrobe needs for several years and it's catching up with me.
10 minutes of planning, done while I watched TV, has kept me on track for an entire season of sewing plans.

Ok so with Denis Villeneuve's Dune films fresh in memory I decided to watch the 1984 David Lynch adaptation of Dune, because I hadn't seen it before, and I'll be honest, I fucking hated it. Man this movie is awful.
The film somehow manages to be far less comprehensible to uninitiated viewers despite having a shit ton of unnecessary exposition, including through very stupid narration. By the time that Paul comes into contact with the Fremen, it gets so bad that I struggled to follow along even as someone who has read all six dune novels. In spite of the overreliance on narration, key information is never explained, like why Paul's eyes turn blue, or even who the fuck the Fremen are.
Everything before the encounter with the Fremen feels like a parody. It's the same series of events that I loved from the novels and the Villeneuve films, and yet they are conveyed so soullessly that I am completely uninvested. The Baron is gross and weird (as he should be) but his tone is more like an Austin Powers villain than a genocidal dictator. Feyd-Rautha (whose name is listed as "Feyd Rautha" in the credits) is played by, and this is not a joke, fucking Sting, of "Every Breath You Take" fame. Also all the Harkonnens have red hair, which is true to the novels but makes them all look like fucking Weasleys.
One of the reprieves is Patrick Stewart, who plays Gurney Halleck. While clearly not given great direction, he tries his hardest to give a good performance anyway. The first scene we see him in he's mostly obscured by the godawful shield effects though.
Oh, and Max von Sydow is here, playing Liet Kynes. Yeah, the knight from that one Bergman film. He's alright too, I guess.
Other than that, every performance in the film is stiff and uninspired. I kept watching this film and going "wow this scene was so much better in the Villeneuve film" or "man that exact same line was in the Villeneuve film and yet it was great there and awful here."
Despite the same series of events being portrayed, somehow there is no buildup or tension at all in the Lynch film. The scene where Paul puts his hand in the box of pain has a cool effect in Lynch's film, but the acting is meaningless, and you don't get the powerful moment where Paul stares defiantly into the Reverend Mother's eyes, or any sort of dynamic at all really. There's no real sense of directionality to the scene at all, nor the movie at large.
The wormriding scene is even worse. In the Villeneuve film, Paul struggles for his life on a titanic monster that moves cubic kilometers of sand like it's nothing, and every single moment is a fight for his life. In this film he just climbs onto it and saunters around on top like it's a sunday promenade. Every single thing Paul does in this film is done completely without struggle.
Speaking of the worms, I suppose the one nice thing I have to say is that the three-lobed worm design fucks. I think I like the Villeneuve worms more simply because of the overall quality of the special effects, but yeah, anyway, that's the last and only nice thing I have to say.
And before I get to the things I hated the most, a brief mention of technology: the special effects for the shields sucked. That's all. Also there are no ornithopters in this film, for some reason, which sucks. Also House Atreides has secret sound based weapons technology, which is stupid. It is eventually revealed that the Fremen use the name Muad'dib to cause destruction with this weapon, which I suppose was Lynch's attempt at Themes. It didn't work and it was stupid.
Anyway, time to talk about the Fremen. God I hate the Fremen. The first warning sign is that Doctor Yueh is just Some White Guy. Then, after Paul and Jessica have crossed the desert after the attack on Arakeen, they meet like, 20 white guys. Why are the Fremen white? What? This sure is a film made during the Reagan presidency.
Here is what Stilgar looks like. He barely says anything in this movie. The Fremen are all non-characters. Stilgar is not a desperate man clinging to belief because he needs it. In fact he is nothing at all. Man I hate this Stilgar so much.
Tumblr media
Every moment after this point is a chaotic, stupid mess as well (spoilers for the second half of the dune novel and for dune part two). They go to Sietch Tabr, and immediately are shown the giant pool of water, with no explanation. There is no Jamis and no fight nor burial of Jamis. Immediately they ask Jessica to be the next Reverend Mother, she drinks poison, something something, now Paul is leader of all the Fremen. Within like 5 minutes. Not a single scene showing any of the Fremen's culture or values is preserved. We move on to the recapture of Arakeen at lightning pace, barely explaining what the wormriding scene or the water of life scene even mean.
Paul storms in on the Emperor, duels Feyd-Rautha in a completely unexciting duel (the choice by Villeneuve to remove the poisoned blades was the correct one. That made the duel feel so much more costly and tense) and makes a short Messiah-esque speech before the credits roll.
Actually, the final thing that happens is that it starts raining. Sure. Yeah. Whatever. I've suffered for two hours. I don't care anymore. I guess Lynch understood that there was never going to be a sequel. Paul uses magic messiah powers to summon rain. Needless to say that doesn't happen in the books. I don't even think they've explained that the Fremen want Arrakis terraformed in this movie because, again, they are just "the natives" in this film.
However, I've saved the final insult for last. This could have just been a bad adaptation, but what made it awful is the fact that David Lynch did not get Dune at all. How can you tell?
Because there is not a single point in this story where you are led to doubt Paul. The ambiguity, the creepiness... it's all gone. Basically none of the characters have much personality in this film, but that's the thing that takes the cake. This is just a Lawrence of Arabia movie. Paul is the savior. He does nothing questionable and saves the day in the end. For that, I say, go fuck yourself David Lynch.
Oh, and did I mention that the soundtrack was done by Toto? It's not bad but it's used completely ineptly. Every single action scene comes out of nowhere with zero tension, so it feels completely undeserved whenever the super epic Toto electric guitar epic hype song starts playing, which it does every single time there is a meaningless action sequence. The soundtrack could probably have been good if the movie didn't suck.
I can say, with confidence, that David Lynch did not understand Dune at all. He didn't get the vibes, he didn't get the tone, and he barely understood the themes. He clearly did not care much for the world.
Whatever. I'm tired. I'm noting this film as a 1/5, where 2 is average. That means it is a painful film not worth watching. Avoid.

I am currently open for freelance editing projects :)
Hey y’all! If anyone needs an editor, I have bandwidth right now and have opened back up for editing work. I’m down for anything, “anything” defined here as:
Developmental edits. This includes some manuscript comments, but largely focuses on a comprehensive edit letter comprising notes on plot, character, style, voice, and theme.
Line edits. Feeling good about the bones of your story, but worried that you’re bogged down by inefficient language, indistinct dialogue, or the odd wandering character arc? The line edit may be for you.
Copyedits. Grammar, usage, spelling, etc. Every nit picked. Fair warning: I don’t use a style guide, because I find that imposing e.g. the Chicago Manual of Style on fiction messes with things like “voice” and “fun.” My emphasis will fall on clarity, and on tone: does it feel right?
Query letter edits. Pitches are hell, but weirdly, I love them. Rate: $35 flat fee for a query, $50 for a synopsis. $10 for each revision pass thereafter (I will, of course, not charge you if my response to a revision is “This slaps!”).
Essay, article, or cover letter proofing. For ethical reasons I won’t review academic material, and for national security reasons I won't review classified CIA documents :( Rate: $15 flat fee, plus 2¢/word.
I don't do authenticity editing on its own, because it makes me feel weird. That said, if you happen to have a protagonist who’s bi or pan or Chinese-American or multiracial and you’re like, “Oh no, have I messed this up horribly,” feel free to request that I take a look from that angle. Same for characters with depression, anxiety, or relatively mild ADHD.
Also: I have no reading triggers or content aversions. I'm fine with any kind of material, disturbing, upsetting, or very very sexy though it may be.
My rates for fiction editing vary based on project length and status. With something under 10k words, I feel relatively comfortable ballparking around 2¢/word for developmental/line and 1.5¢/word for copyediting, but beyond that, I’d want to test-edit a sample. Occasionally I’ll swap to an hourly rate thereafter, because what if you send over the next Hunger Games, and I tear through it in three hours, but at 2¢/word it’s supposed to cost $1,600? Ridiculous. I hate editing rates.
You can message me here on tumblr or email me directly at [email protected] if you’d like to hire me. If you have a question, don't be shy about reaching out to ask. I am not a salesperson and will never try to hard-sell you.
If you know anybody looking for an editor, please do pass them this post! On this hellsite I know I am just another weirdo, but in real life, I have the qualifications to provide writers with high-quality editing backed up by years of experience in the publishing industry. Per The Official Bio:
Let’s take your fiction to the next level!
I'm the author of four novels: Alone Out Here, published by Disney-Hyperion; and Seven Ways We Lie, Noteworthy, and Final Draft, published by Abrams Books. My books have been published on four continents, optioned for film and TV, given seven starred reviews from critics, and named to Best-of-the-Year lists by Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, and the New York Public Library. Besides editing my own fiction, I've also done editorial work for authors whose books are published at Scholastic, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and more.
As an editor, I dive in with an underlying enthusiasm for every project. I'm not interested in trying to alter others' work to my tastes, but in recognizing what story a writer wants to tell and helping them reach that destination, whether with a developmental edit or a final polish. I'm happy to edit works of any length and genre, though my specialty is in fiction, and particularly in children's and YA fiction.
Reblogs would be greatly, greatly appreciated! xo

ahhh no way i feel like you have so much elvis knowledge under your belt already!! like i said the other day, i love reading the little easter eggs you leave in your stories!
if we’re talking books about elvis’s relationships then obviously the most comprehensive one is alanna nash’s ‘baby let’s play house’ (you can def find this one online free). some people don’t like it because they view it as sensationalism but it does go into almost every single relationship he had with a woman so it’s an interesting read as far as that is concerned. she’s also written three? other books about/relevant to him, and i’d say to give those a read, too. (side bar—for more info on his relationship with priscilla obviously her book is a must-read, but i’d also recommend ‘child bride’ by suzanne finstad. it doesn’t paint a great picture of priscilla, but it does give more insight into their relationship, and interviews people from priscilla’s past).
joyce bova’s ‘don’t ask forever’ is very interesting and sweet, and a little heart wrenching at times. they were together from 69 through to 72. she was actually the reason he flew to DC when the infamous nixon visit happened. it’s so much wilder than just him going to the white house 😭 he comes across as a deeply emotional man who at times felt too much and had a bit of a selfish streak, which is unfortunate but true of him.
linda’s book is one of my favourites and i always cry reading it, and as much as i don’t like her, ginger’s book does lend a look into the last year of his life. anita’s book also lends some insight.
‘are you lonesome tonight’ by lucy de barbin gives insight into a teenage elvis. ‘elvis and gladys’ by elaine dundy obviously discusses his relationship with his mother, but i think understanding that is integral to understanding *him* and how he navigated these relationships with women.
you’ve already mentioned guralnick and i think any of his books are required reading for elvis fans tbh.
some others you might find interesting (though aren’t about his romantic life specifically) is ‘the jewish world of elvis presley’ by roselle kline chartock and larry geller’s book. elvis confided so much in larry and it’s sad to see how outside forces were working to rip them apart, basically.
there’s just so many books on elvis, i couldn’t even possibly begin to name them all, but these are some i def recommend.
Seriously you are one of the people I think about when I write. I am here too study this man like my life depends on it, knowing him more and more just makes me so happy, and I think its fucking beautiful to have someone notice it.... its a pleasure loop for me.....
I have the Guralnick, Nash and then Priscilla's books and I ... ahem... did obtain them online.... but I feel like we are doing a public service publishing this list.. i had heard of child bride, and maybe the jewish one to, but some of the others i hadn't... jerry's book is on my list to, i started reading george's but something about it turned me off... maybe it just seemed obsequious to me... but I suppose it would be good to read, its at the bottom of the list.... honestly, the books by the women in his life appeal to me quite a lot....
thanks sweet love,
xoxox norah
