2: do they have a nickname?

Not that she lets anyone call her, but Celeste calls her “Vegs” occasionally. And it’s in debate, a little, on if Celeste will end up calling her “Lyra” at some point (it’s the name of the constellation Vega is a star in. Though I didn’t know Vega was a star until after she was named). It has potential to be a sweet moment, if I can do it right. I like the idea of it, at least, even if it doesn’t happen.

12: do they have any family members?

None that she’s in contact with or keeps up with or checks on.

20: sexual orientation?

She’s a lesbian.

22: do they have any tattoos?

No. She can’t, really, because it’s too identifying. If that wasn’t an issue, though, I can see her having a half sleeve on her upper arm. Not sure why, but it feels right.

This was for my OC Luke/Xavi. He's a Dead City kid who died too early and had a lot of hope in his heart. He loves hard, and he was protected by a few older kids, so he didn't see the full breadth of how awful Dead City is until he died.

This is one of my favorite albums at the moment too though, and one of my favorite songs off of it. It's a very hopeful song, a bit of a desperate song, and I'd say it embodies Luke very well.

☆ STATISTICS.

projects worked on: Andromeda Rogue mostly but i've been swatting at Shiny New Ideas left and right with a tennis racket. also i thought about Gemini Heist really really hard and i think that counts for something

proudest accomplishment: AR1 draft 2 is done!!!!!!

books read: After Atlas by Emma Newman; Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson; Exit Strategy (Murderbot Diaries #4) by Martha Wells. all excellent reads. (sidenote two out of three of these books involve murder investigations and the third has murder in the title. i'm sensing a theme in my reading.)

☆ GENERAL COMMENTS.

i am still terrible at being consistent at writeblr-ing. i guess this is just my life now.

i'm debating using camp nano to actually hunker my ass down and get some writing done on gemini heist, but between work and apartment hunting and a possible move by the end of the month i don't know how feasible that's gonna be :') we'll see.

and no i'm not glossing over the fact that i have a finished second draft. i'm just saving my screaming for below the cut.

so this draft now sits at 85.7K, which is about 11.8K added from the first, and although it is still faaar from perfect it is definitely... better than the draft i finished 2 years ago. it's insane how much my writing has improved, between all the reading i've been doing and first drafting the two sequels of the trilogy.

that being said there still are a lot of things i know need to be fixed, but i'm at the point where if i try to fix them on my own i'll be stuck on them forever.

enter the betas!!! i'm planning on doing an ~official~ beta call next week but honestly if you're interested in beta-ing this book feel free to hmu right away!! ultimately i want to self-pub this thing (which is quite overwhelming to think about hhhhh) but one thing at a time :')

☆ FEATURED EXCERPT.

i really couldn't decide what snippet to post so this was admittedly chosen a bit at random lmao. this is from when the gang is approaching their destination for their expedition.

On the external display, Mohani loomed ahead, growing larger every second. The planet was almost entirely a deep blue, except for some white spots at its poles. It reminded Finneas of his final glimpse of Ghillairde when he was leaving it behind for the last time. For a disorienting second, it almost felt like he was returning to his birth planet. But soon, the ship was close enough to see the sandy outline of the continents. The blue wasn’t all ocean. Some of it was trees. He directed the ship towards the landing coordinates just as Petra arrived in the bridge, clutching several barf bags. “Good to see you’ve come prepared, Lacroye,” he commented. “You’re already looking green, and we haven’t even entered the atmosphere yet.” She grumbled something unintelligible in response as she took her place in the copilot’s chair.

Crys almost, almost thinks they’ll make it without anything going wrong when the next explosion hits. They’d left what Lize deemed to be the critical zone – the base and it’s warm, homely corridors – several turns ago, plunged into the abandoned mines with nothing but a handful of lirstones to light their way, but all hell breaks loose anyway, when the charge goes off. There’s a burst of sound, directly overhead, loud enough to make his ears ring, to send all five of them stumbling to a stop – he sucks in a sharp, stuttering breath, clapping his hands over his ears, and someone gives a shout, and then the ceiling caves in.

He spends most of his time sleeping, slipping in and out of half-fevered dreams, whiplashing between unbearably warm and not being able to even feel his fingers – and somehow, time skips and hops and jumps and the bolt creaks, the door opens to fling a square of light onto the ground, and they let him out.

The three of them whirl just in time to see the man being flung across the clearing, straight at them. Iri launches himself several paces backwards with the aid of his wings, Yuan mirroring his movements, and Beatriz Shifts in quick succession to get out of the way. Both of the man’s hands have morphed into giant, dark claws now – he digs his fingers into the ground, ripping deep furrows into the dirt, and slows to a stop right beside them with an accompanying cloud of dust.

NEW YEAR’S POSITIVITY TAG

The gist of this tag game that I just made is to spread some positivity/love to fellow writeblrs! It has been a very challenging week (and year), as I’m sure it has been for so many people, but I’ve been thinking long and hard about what it is I’d like to do for all my mutuals and I guess the writeblr community in general, and this is really the best I could come up with.

Yeah. I just wanted to say, whether you’ve been with me for five months or five days, I see you, and I appreciate you so so much. I’m not very good at explaining how it is I feel exactly as I feel it, but, like, every time I get a notification or I see you beautiful beanbags on my dash it’s just an instant mood booster. Rules: look back on your work, both past and present, finished and unfinished. what are five to ten narrative elements or tropes that continuously pop up in your work?

I have so many things that crop up a lot, sometimes I think I’m just writing the same story over and over. XD

1. Found Family

2. Dealing with trauma and recovery

3. Best friends who are polar opposites

4. A small cast of characters that I either treat like they’re all the main character or it shifts who the main character is each story in the series

5. One character that’s always causing trouble and loving every minute of it

6. One character who’s perpetually done with the rest

7. One character with big dreams of changing/saving the world but has crippling self doubt (who isn’t based on anyone in particular I’m suuure)

8. Parallels, so many parallels, a lot of them on accident XD

9. A lot of my stories don’t actually have romance but if they do I basically have one ship dynamic and it’s girl with way too much to deal with and her emotional support best friend who’s had a crush on her practically since he met her

10. A flat arc character whose struggle is to not change, to hold on to their hope and to what makes them themselves when the world tells them to give it up

I love all of these tropes sooo much, which is probably why they show up so often.

Lingering hearts, clover and sage - a fantasy romance

Do you like romance? Are you a fan of slow-burn and the conflict between love and duty? Do you enjoy magic, fantasy cultures and just the barest hints of an incoming apocalypse? Then this story might be for you!

To research the effects of catastrophic magical events on the environment, the elf Naeth gets permission from his isolationist government to cross the border into demonic lands and spend six months in a dilapidated scientific outpost. There he meets the demon Umaen, who gifts him with a beehive, a fluffy red chicken, and an unexpected friendship.

Torn apart by the elves’ strict no-contact laws, they must find a way to cope with the increasingly worrying results of Naeth’s research, while navigating an impossible romance and the clash between their two opposing cultures. Can their relationship survive the distance?

Rating: Explicit (because of a couple of scenes) | Estimated length: 100k words | Available from the second half of February

So what if I surrendered to my impulses and wrote out the entirety of Umaen and Naeth’s love story? My plan is to edit it out nicely, add in some illustrations by yours truly and make it downloadable from Kofi (priced between 2.50$-3$). This is an official INTEREST CHECK! I’m putting a lot of love in this story, and it’s toeing the line between sweet and bittersweet, with lots of feels and a little bit of politics. I hope you’ll stay tuned for new updates!

chayscribbles' (shitty) writing update: july 2023

no Official™️writing update this month. partially bc i don't have the time to make one partially bc i didn't write jackshit this month anyway lmao. but i do have a few updates. let's keep this brief.

ANDROMEDA ROGUE: i haven't touched this baby at all since it's in beta phase (which is absolutely terrifying, btw. every time i get a notification that someone has added a comment to their doc i have a mini-heart attack) and i'm still waiting on everyone's feedback. i also have no idea how to proceed once i have it. but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. (i'll probably cower at the foot of the bridge and refuse to cross.)

GEMINI HEIST: i was really hoping to use the time away from AR to get some progress done on this wip (especially since i started this wip about a year ago), but unfortunately that didn't quite happen. however i've decided that i need a bit of a restart as things were starting to get a bit... complicated... after working on it for a year i kept adding shit that tied my brain in knots more than anything else. so. i'm cutting a BUNCH of shit and hoping simplifying things will help.

Rules: go through your WIPs and rate their level of plot

All the Queen's Horses - 6 This story does have a plot, but it's also largely based on character actions and their consequences, moreso than an overarching plot. But there is some!

Call of Shadows - 7.5 CoS is a lot more plot-based than ATQH, but it still isn't 100% plot. I still need to figure out a lot of the plot, though. I have some large plot points, but I need to fill in the gaps.

Political Fantasy/Romance WIP - 7.5 This one has a good bit of plot, but I don't know all the details, hence the rating. I plotted out a good portion of this WIP last year, though, so I honestly know more about this one than CoS in terms of precise plot points.

Undeveloped WIPs:

High Fantasy WIP - 4.5 Someday, this will probably be one of the more plot-heavy stories, as soon as I figure out literally anything about the plot. Right now this story is literally just vibes and some vague character concepts.

Supernatural Roadtrip WIP - 4 This one is relatively character-driven compared to some of the others, and I have almost no idea what happens during it, beyond just vague vibes and ideas.

Warforged WIP - 4.5 Similarly to High Fantasy WIP, this one will someday have a bigger plot, but right now the story is nothing but vibes and vague concepts, with exactly one character figured out.
