Joker's motivations in Joker War
Now idk if I was the only one initially confused by wtf Joker's actual intentions were in Joker War. Maybe I'm just a bit schewpid and everyone else got it but regardless here's my attempt to piece together what's going on in his weird little mind.
Imho, the first lines we get about Joker's underlying intentions are here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's extremely important that he was aware of Bruce's intentions to redesign the city. That was definitely the catalyst for the whole thing.
Speaking of Bruce's plans to redesign the city:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He mentions multiple times that his goal is to build a city that doesn't need a Batman.
Regardless of whether he actually mentioned something like this at a press conference or something, I'm sure Joker would be able to pick up on it anyway.
And it's very well-established that Joker needs Batman. The Best Man arc has this whole beautiful monologue about it:
Tumblr media
Joker NEEDS Batman. A city without Batman is a city with no place for Joker.
The whole Best Man arc takes during the same year (year 17) as Joker War (prior to it, obviously).
The Batcat engagement took place in year 16. (In which Batman also had Joker locked up in his basement. And he deliberately tracked down amnesiac!Joker and made him Normal Joker again so he could get information. Yowza! Not cool, Bats.)
Additionally, the events of Endgame took place on year 15 and Death of the Family in year 14.
Joker reveals more of his motivations in the final fight scene between him and Batman:
Tumblr media
Very interesting that Joker initially chooses to stab Batman in the back. Hmm I wonder if that has any deeper meaning or reveals anything about Joker's own feelings in this situation /sar.
Also very, very, very significant that Joker chooses to battle Batman in that particular suit, after he essentially desecrates it:
Tumblr media
So, by now, it's apparent that Joker's direct intention with Joker War was to essentially destroy the possibility of Bruce's vision of Gotham:
Tumblr media
He even directly says that all of this was about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hm... I don't think he's just talking about the city, here...
And then we have this:
There's been a recurring theme since Death of the Family, that Bruce isn't being the Batman that Joker wants him to be.
Tumblr media
To me, this line feels like "okay, Batman is ruined irreparably, let's just destroy him and start over from scratch."
Then we have this panel. Whew. I think this might be one of the most revealing panels in the entirety of Joker War, largely because of how Joker is depicted in it.
Tumblr media
He doesn't look angry, he looks genuinely distraught.
And I didn't notice this until someone else pointed it out but if you zoom in, it definitely looks like he's crying.
Tumblr media
I don't think this is just an artistic thing, largely because of this panel from a few issues back:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So those are definitely tears of laughter. But it looks roughly the same. Except based on the context and his expression, I don't think those are tears of laughter in Joker War. At the very least, he's hysterical.
Somewhat of a tangent but it's important to tie everything together: Joker War reminds me very much of DOTF and Endgame in that Joker is depicted (or tries to portray himself) as this terrifying, ruthless, inhuman thing, but if you actually look into his motivations, he's being driven by his emotions, particularly his feelings about Batman, which are almost inarguably the most human part of him.
In DOTF he talks about how Batman isn't being the Batman he wants him to be and yadda yadda, but then in the tie-ins, we have this section, which I think does a beautiful job of explaining his real motivations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's jealousy. Jealousy and fear. He's terrified of losing Batman.
And then there's a similar thing in Endgame.
Initially, he says this:
Tumblr media
"Haha yeah I'm just bored of you lol."
But then in the final scene we get this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's not bored, he's heartbroken. He's genuinely hurt by Batman (in his perception) rejecting him, and he's lashing out in a major way.
I think it's definitely similar in Joker War, except he's not as afraid of losing Batman to the Batfam, more so he's afraid that Bruce's new design for the city will eliminate the need for a Batman, although the Batcat almost-wedding and Bruce's growing family definitely play a role in his motivations.
I think that might be where his whole idea of making Batman start over with nothing came from. Because when Bruce started, he didn't really have anyone except for Alfred, and later Dick.
I think that Joker could tolerate him having a few allies but he can't handle the idea of Batman having an actual family. Both because he doesn't want to share Batman's attention, and because he doesn't have a family, so why does Batman get to have one? Why does Batman get to connect with people when the only person he's truly connected to is Batman? He wants Bats to be as dependent on him as he is on Bats.
So, that's just my Hot Take (read: mediocre interpretation) of Joker War. I wasn't too fond of the storyline until I kinda pieced everything together and it's still not my favorite arc but I definitely like it better than I did initially.

when they’re both repressed individuals who torture themselves by self flagellating with a code of duty because shame and punishment feel fundamental to giving their despair meaning due to circumstances outside of their control. also they both look like they’re on a verge of tears at any moment.

just want to be annoying about dc comics on here for a second. Would really recommend batman: war on crime and superman: peace on earth by Alex Ross and Paul Dini if you like those characters. Both just have a perfect understanding of what makes those characters interesting.

Mother and father. They would have laughed. To see me all dressed up. The Bat-Man. They would’ve laughed and laughed. My father was classically dignified, my mother was classically kind. They were not people who laughed often. The world was a burden to them. A burden they bore with dignity and kindness. But once in a while. If they saw something- something particularly ridiculous- When I remember them, I remember them laughing.
And they should laugh. Good and hard. Everyone should. It’s funny. The whole world should laugh. Do you think I don’t know? A grown man. Dressed as an animal. Sitting on a gargoyle. Waiting for crime to come. And when it comes, he’s just going to punch it in the face. And if that grown man just punches crime hard enough, then that’ll just make everything all right. It’s funny.
And what makes it funnier, what would make the whole place scream, is that it’s not really a grown man. That’s just the mask under the mask. No. Way up there. Looking over us. Trying to save us. That’s that kid. That’s that little rich kid whose mommy and daddy got shot. And instead of mourning them properly, he got on his knees and made a vow. “I swear by the spirits of my parents to avenge their deaths by spending the rest of my life warring on all criminals.”
[…]
After the alley and the gun. After the pearls. What use was I? After the blood on her hand, what use was a little rich kid whose mommy and daddy got shot? I was pain. That’s all I was. Everything else, every chance given to me, every promise I’d made, all of it was pain. And what use is pain? What use is being just pain? It’s not dignified. It’s not kind. And if it’s not dignified, and if it’s not kind, then maybe it’s not worth anything. Maybe it’s better off as nothing. Gone. Dead.
I was ten. I got one of my father’s razor blades, and I got down on my knees. I put the metal on my wrist. The edge scratching cold. The blood on my hands. And I looked up. To Mother and Father. I told them I was sorry. I was so sorry. I was on my knees in Gotham. And I was praying, pushing my hands together now, the blood and the blade warm between them. I prayed.
And no one- No one answered. No one answered. No one answered. I was alone. Like everyone else. Like everyone else in Gotham, I saw everyone in Gotham, all of us. We’re all on our knees, our hands together, the blood and the blade warm between them. We pray. And no one answers. I saw. And I understood. Finally. Kindness. Dignity. I let the razor fall, and I understood, it was done, I’d done it. I’d surrendered. My life was no longer my life, and I whispered- “I swear by the spirits of my parents to avenge their deaths by spending the rest of my life warring on all criminals.”
So that’s what it is. The ears. The belt. The gargoyle. It’s not funny. It’s the choice of a boy. The choice to die. I am Batman. I am suicide.

Why do you dislike Tom King so much?
I'm a DC fan whose favorite character is Wally West and he wrote Heroes in Crisis isn't that enough reason to dislike his writing? Like literally after years of Wally being erased we finally had him back. Then what happens just a few years later? He's written into a story where he loses control and murders a bunch of his friends including Roy Harper. The fact there is a canon DC story where Wally kills Roy is such an absurd statement but it's true. Obviously retcons changed this later but this doesn't change the original story's intent to have Wally be the culprit. And that's not even going into how insulting Tom King's view of mental health is throughout that story. Or how ridiculous of a thought is to have a character like Wally be like "I'm depressed cause I can't find my kids" and have other heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman send him to a mental health facility....instead of you know HELPING HIM FIND HIS DAMN KIDS.
And that's not to mention literally everything else he's written which I also dislike. Even right now he's absolutely ruining characters I love on Human Target ...because let's ignore all of Guy's character development and not understand he's actually a guy with a rough exterior and anger issues that he struggles with and tries to overcome yet still cares so immensely for everyone around him he would endure any pain if it meant his friends never get hurt......lets ignore all that and write him as a horrible abusive person instead. Also if you know anything about Guy you'll know he himself had a horrible abusive alcoholic father who targeted him specifically in his youth. So Tom King here is perpetuating the whole cycle of abusive bs that I hate especially since he's doing it to a character who for decades has always struggled and tried to be a better person despite all this. Who knows how bad abuse is and would never inflict it on someone he loves like what happened to him.

Out of DC's Trinity, Wonder Woman is really the worst served when it comes to love interests. Batman gets to play around with Catwoman. Superman is married to the Lois Lane. And Wonder Woman gets... Steve Trevor, a character so boring and inessential that they effectively wrote him out of the WW comic for almost 30 years and no one really cared.

I will say, it is so fun thinking about the Waynes and their relationship with food. But specifically Bruce.
We get such little light shed on the Waynes before the Big Terrible happened. Like. How were Wayne dinners like?
Were they terribly posh and quiet with small moments of fun thrown in? Was Alfred scolding Thomas for telling a star eyed Bruce unnecessarily gory details from a surgery?
Did Martha help Bruce break into the cookie jar? Was there a lovely, playful gossip about Bruce's loud classmates and his adorable crush on Gray Ghost?
Because I like that! But I'd also like it to be a complete juxtaposition.
I want Bruce to talk about his family, to his children, with a smile that could melt the sun. I want him to tell them about the noise.
How the Wayne manor was permanently flooded with a noise and boister that could rival a packed 5 star kitchen.
How Thomas always cooked with a dry cigarette in his mouth, arguing with uncle Jacob about forks of all things.
Why were they smudged, why were they placed randomly and not organised with militaristic precision, while Martha watched with the fondest annoyance.
How Thomas would cuss filthy in Italian only when Bruce was around and only Oz could understand him, long before he was the Penguin, long before Bruce was Batman.
"It's about culture. Not that you'd understand, Jakey."
And uncle Jacob never entertained his father for long. He'd throw a dirty look, his obsidian eyes sharp as a switchblade, and mutter a 'bitch' in Russian, while Alfred sat there judging them both.
The Waynes were chaos with heartbeats. And Bruce's favorite event at these diners? The food fights. It's always uncle Philip who started them.
"Wow, Jay eating steak. Never thought I'd see this day."
" It's venison."
" Vinison?" Thomas would finally take a break from his unlit cigarette, holding Bruce in his lap like a king would a prized cat.
A collective sigh rang among the table. They knew what was coming. " What are you, fuckin' crazy? That's fuckin' cannoli, dipshit."
"With vinison."
"Jacob."
" Tom."
"Martha."
" Honey."
" You come into my house, not knowing what a goddam cannoli is? Fuck are you gonna tell me next, you don't put garlic in your Carbonara? I mean."
" Garlic is disgusting."
And Thomas would cover Bruce's ears like that's the most offensive thing uncle Jacob could utter at Thomas Wayne's table. And Uncle Oz agreed. Their favorite pastime was ganging up on Martha's oldest brother.
And it starts off as something minuscule and petty and mutates in something loud and ugly and breathtaking.
Bruce would watch with an open mouth in Alfred's lap, as his father's neck popped with veins, and uncle Jacobs pale complexion would blush something angry as the skin of his throat thinned from yelling.
"FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, YOUR PRESIDENT IS A VODKA DRINKING, BALDING, COMMIE PIECE OF SHIT."
"YOU'RE AMERICAN. "
" I CANT HELP THAT, I WAS BORN LIKE THAT!"
And it wasn't a true Saturday dinner unless Thomas didn't leap across the table, running over all the food to smash whatever dish into Jacobs face.
But truly, the best part, was watching them go from fight dogs to eating outside in time-out. As different as his father and uncle were, they could always find agreement on one topic:
Defying Martha Wayne was painfully stupid.
They'd share a cigarette and eat in silence, which was as friendly as they'd ever get. But he loved it. Bruce loved Saturday dinner.
And when the batkids start the fighting tradition on Saturdays, Bruce thinks they do, too.

Trick or trivia
Happy Halloween! I do enjoy trivia of many types, but one of my favorite genres is what I call the Berenstein Timeline: unmade shows and movies, versions of classic movies where studios and producers made different decisions, some better, some much worse. All of these are real projects that were, on some level, considered (there are some recurring names)
"Heat Vision & Jack", a 90s pastiche of 70s-80s action shows starring Jack Black as an astronaut on the run from the law and Owen Wilson as his talking motorcycle
"Jurassic Park" directed by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp as Alan Grant, Jim Carrey as Ian Malcolm, and Vincent Price as John Hammond
the 90s "Batman" directed by Ivan Reitman; Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy were going to star but couldn't decide which of them would be Batman and which would be Robin
Back in the 1970s the American network was getting good numbers showing heavily-edited reruns of "Monty Python's Flying Circus", so they tried to sell the Pythons on the next logical step: an animated Saturday morning cartoon
"Edward Scissorhands" still directed by Burton but starring Tom Cruise or maybe Michael Jackson
"Return of the Jedi" directed by David Lynch; Harrison Ford was considering not coming back for the third movie and so when he came out of the carbonite there was a chance he would have been Christopher Walken
Guillermo del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness". Also "the Hobbit" and lots of other things, he seems to have a lot of unmade projects
the 2010s "Star Trek" movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, where the edgy reboot crew visits the Gangster Planet from that one stupid episode of the original series
Everybody knows about the unmade "Superman Lives" starring Nicolas Cage in the title role, but did you know it was going to be directed by Tim Burton and include Christopher Walken as Brainiac, who would have been a green head on spider legs
Harold Ramis didn't particularly want to act on camera, so when they were casting "Ghostbusters" Egon could have been Christopher Walken, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, or John Lithgow. Supposedly the movie was originally intended to be a relatively serious exploration of Dan Akroyd's very real interest in paranormal investigation, although this clashes a bit with the fact that Peter Venkman was originally going to be played by John Belushi and Winston Zeddmore was written for Eddie Murphy who backed out when the character's backstory and most of his lines were cut
John Waters' animated series "Uncle John" on 90s MTV
the original version of "Bill & Ted's Time Van" starring Pauly Shore and Sean Penn
"Red Dragon" (the original Hannibal Lecter novel) directed by David Lynch starring John Lithgow as Hannibal Lecter and Mel Gibson as Will Graham
the 1970s "Dr. Strange" TV series
the 1990s Disney animated "John Carter of Mars"
the 1990s Warner Bros animated "King Tut" musical with songs by Prince
the serious horror version of "Beetlejuice"
Drew Barrymore's 2000s remake of "Barbarella"
the Dungeons & Dragons movie James Cameron was going to make until TSR left the table over merchandising disputes, forcing Cameron to go work on some dumb movie about the Titanic
American "Doctor Who" movie starring Michael Jackson
Canadian "Doctor Who" cartoon by Nelvana starring a Doctor based intensely off of either Jeff Goldblum or Christopher Lloyd
"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" directed by Terry Gilliam
"Good Omens" directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Robin Williams
"The Black Cauldron" using character and background designs by Nightmare-era Tim Burton

TK’s Wonder Woman
After doing this in his Batman run...
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Batman(2016) #40)
I always wondered if he was going to tease more of the pairing.
Then in Wonder Woman(2023) #3, we got all those Wonderbat wibes with the little story about trinity’s. Diana’s daughter at Bruce’s home…
« Wonder Robin » ? really ? … XD
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Wonder Woman(2023) #3)
That was so cute … do I even need to mention Lizzie’s Bat-themed pajama ?
Then Issue 6, Trinity sleeps again at Bruce’s home.
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Wonder Woman(2023) #6)
This time Trinity(Lizzie) wears a Wondy themed Pajama in a bed with a Bat-themed cover and Batman themed puppets everywhere. While in Issue 3 Batman and Wonder Woman were off-world on a JL mission, in Issue 6 Batman is supposed to be on patrol in Gotham. So it looks like a recurring thing for Diana's daughter to sleepover at Bruce's place.
Another Graphic detail, the Supes/Bats/Wondy representations were rather WonderBat teasing as well so it could more Belén Ortega's (the Artists) choice than Tom King’s
In Wonder Woman(2023) #4, the 3 statues inside Superman’s « Fortress of Solitude » show in the front Superman (of course) with Wonder Woman and Batman on either side…
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Wonder Woman(2023) #4)
But Diana and Bruce seem to prefer the other one first and themselves in the background.. ;)
Wonder Woman(2023) #3 shows a Painting in Bruce’s home with Diana in the front.. If I was Bruce, I'd rather like to look at Diana then at myself too ...
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Wonder Woman(2023) #3)
And it looks like Diana shared Bruce’s POV because in Wonder Woman(2023) #5 a wall sculpture of some kind of monument on Themiscyra shows Batman in the front and Diana in the background.
Tumblr media
(Edited from DC Comics Wonder Woman(2023) #5)
I Wonder if any other Amazon on themyscira would have ordered such a picture with a man in the front and the woman in the background ? especially if said woman is their Princess ?... This had to be Diana's choice.
So the message is rather obvious : Bruce likes to look at Diana and Diana likes to look at Bruce .. ;) … while Clark likes to look at himself... XD

Kori Anders' summer job at a ritzy Santa Monica beach club is fun, but she doesn't care about keeping up with the current trends, and she's not interested in rushing around to all the parties. She'd rather explore her inexplicable draw to the stars or hang out with her new friend, Victor Stone. Her sister, Kira, on the other hand, is the most popular girl around. With the hottest clothes, an even hotter boyfriend (the Tate Fairweather), and a take-no-prisoners attitude, she's Kori's opposite in every way. Their summer heats up when Tate's uncle asks the girls to participate in an EDS study his pharmaceutical company is running. During treatment, Kori develops some strange powers she never had before...and she might not be the only one. Can Kori persuade her sister to trust her before it's too late? And when a carload of teens with their own powers come looking for her to warn her about a creepy stalker, she'll learn that trust is a two-way street!
