Fanart for Undeadwood, the zombie western tabletop 4-part miniseries on YT run by Brian Foster, and starring Matt Mercer, Marisha Ray, Anjali Bhimani, Travis Willingham and Khary Payton.
It’s a great spooky streaming show, with shockingly high production value and elaborate costumes and sets!

My partner showed me a screenshot of a post that I can’t find now about how “something something critical roles fans are passionate because you have to be to watch that much content.”
And you are right. You absolutely have to be passionate to sit through all of critical role. Critical Role is an immensely long piece of media. It’s absolutely stupidly long. You can’t be a casual viewer of critical role. Not really. You’ll just fall behind.
How long exactly are we talking, surely not that long? Like there’s some pretty long shoes out there.
Greys anatomy is often cited as a very long show and it is at 272.5 ish hours of total run time it takes a lot to get through! Not even close.
The Simpsons? To this day the longest running cartoon out there? Actually even shorter at about 247 hours.
Ok well let’s talk Anime. There’s shows like Naruto that are long and then become “new” shows that are also long. Well to watch Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden and Boruto in total you come to about 342 hours. Thats 14.5 days over two weeks of straight content.
Then there’s the known giant. One Piece. The show every me rips on for just how fucking massive it is. The one that has been pumping out season after season for nearing a quarter of a century. 420 hours and 48 minutes. seventeen and a half days of pure content. Hour after hour. We have to be getting close right?
No.
Let’s break this down.
Critical Role is long, it’s been running a long time, and there’s tons of bonus content.
Let’s talk the most conservative version of “All of Critical Role” every episode of the three seasons of critical role thus far. Gameplay only. Skipping the intro, announcements, ad reads and the middle break of every single episode.
You’re looking at a run time of 1075 hours and 22 minutes just game time. (44 Days or 6.4 Weeks)
With all those announcements, skits, fan art and ads? 1244 hours and 56 minutes (51.8 days or 7.4 weeks)
If you’re including their excellent mini series? Exandria unlimited itself adds about 58 hours. Plus there’s oneshots revisiting characters, spin offs, sponsored and non sponsored play of other TTRPG games like Undeadwood. Total of 1517 hours 56 minutes (63.2 Days, 9 weeks)
You could watch One Piece twice before finishing the most charitable version of “all” of critical role and three times in the most extensive option.
Even looking up podcasts the longest I could find of the ones I know about My Brother My Brother and Me clocks in somewhere in the vicinity of 637 hours.
Conclusion: It’s long. And there is no casual critical role fan.

hiya!
just stumbled over the soft ask game and thought tis might be fun. 1, 5 and 10 if ye dinnae mind c:
have a great day, night ... evening!
toodles
Hello pal!! Oooh awesome thank you!
1) your favourite playlist (made by yourself or someone else)
Oh my god I have so many favourite playlists XD I'm going to do top 5, because otherwise I'll be here all day. All but one I think are made by me, or by me and a pal collaboratively. (Because I like my own playlists so much lmao)
Okay to preface this - 1) most of my playlists are made for a specific fic I'm writing, 2) I am literally in love with almost every playlist I make so this was hard to narrow down, 3) most of them are sad ok?? I like sad music so be warned XD
and the counting of teeth (by myself and lovewithagirl, for our very fucking sad Jim/Ed OFMD WIP)
dust and bones, copper and blood (by myself, for the witch Clayton UnDeadwood au that's still in the works)
wish i knew how to quit you (by myself, for the nemesis au, a very sad very long Aly/Clayton UnDeadwood WIP - a lot of this was also suggested by various folks over on the udw server)
honey don't feed it (by myself, for the UnDeadwood shifter fic by the same name)
ready to be heartbroken (by myself, for the modern au Jim/Ed OFMD WIP)
There are SO many other ones I really love - there's a eastern canada themed one for the lighthouse au, a paranormal romance one I did not create that I fucking adore, etc. But those are the top ones XD
5) Five TV shows that cheer you up
I already answered this in another ask, but here's five MORE tv shows that cheer me up sjskskj
Slings and Arrows - another Very Canadian show about the theatre. Absolutely hilarious. Essential as someone who grew up in a theatre town.
Leverage (and Redemption) - I just love them so much!
Jing: King of Bandits - one of the only animes that I would still watch these days. I fucking adore it so much. My fav anime (and manga) series of all time for sure.
Miami Vice - Yes, the 80s one. Don't @ me okay I love it even if it's terrible, I went through a huge Miami Vice stage in my teens/early 20s. (My dad and I used to watch it together, and then I stole all his seasons to take with me to University lol)
Parks and Rec - I haven't watched it in a while but it's still SUCH a funny show.
10) Something you’ve created in the last year that you’re proud of (a playlist, a piece of art, some writing, a craft hobby, a social media account, etc)
Oh this is a really lovely question! A few things spring to mind.
I have an art piece that I made this year that was actually acquisitioned by one of my very small local museums. It's a piece that I'm super proud of, and it feels really neat that it's in a museum now! On a related note, I also started an art account earlier this year, which was a really big step for me art-wise. It's been fun, even if I'm really bad at updating.
Honestly I'm also super proud of a bunch of my fanfics that I've written this year! It feels like a bit more of a haphazard writing year, and I've been having trouble writing consistent fics lately, but I'm still proud of it :)
Thanks for the ask friend!! I hope you're having a wonderful evening!!

Hello! I've been wanting to ask this for a little while, what's a good starting point to critical role? Like should I watch legend of vox machina and start from there or is there another campaing that might be better to start from zero?
Hello dear, I think it depends on what approach you want to take.
If you're new to this style - to watching people play D&D - I would recommend starting with Exandria Unlimited. They're basically "miniseries" and there are three of them: Exandria Unlimited (8 episodes), Exandria Unlimited Kybal (2 episodes), and Exandria Unlimited Calamity (4 episodes, although I warn you those episodes are extra long - one is six hours). I recommend these since they're short(er), a good introduction if you're not sure how these things work without too much time investment, and everyone is an experienced player and so it's pretty "polished" and streamlined.
There are also a lot of oneshots or mini campaigns that are just plain fun to watch. Some are tied to the main campaigns, others are not. Undeadwood is a great one - four episodes of supernatural cowboys, what is not to love? I recommend that one - or the Cthlulu one, if horror's to your tastes.
If you care about being caught up, I would start with Critical Role Campaign 3 - the current campaign, starring Bell's Hells. There are only 24 episodes so far, so you can catch up fairly quickly, and then watch live with everyone else. Campaign 3 has references to previous campaigns, but I think you're good even if you're a total newbie. No knowledge of previous campaigns is really needed. Everyone's really experienced and confident, they're daring to go balls to the wall, and they got a fantastic new studio to film in.
However, if you truly have the time, I do recommend starting with Campaign 1 with Vox Machina for one big reason: it gives a lot of context and joy to watch Critical Role develop from the beginning. You get to see these people learn how to play with cameras watching them, learn how to adjust to having an audience, and grow in skill and confidence as improv actors/D&D players.
Some people claim that Critical Role is scripted. As someone who's played D&D for a decade, I can promise it isn't. And if you watch from the beginning you'll see what I mean - you literally watch in real time as they become better and better at knowing how to use the D&D rules, at building their world and characters, at improv acting and playing off each other.
It's also really joyful to watch these people become more and more successful. They start out using a spare room in Geek & Sundry's headquarters with bookshelves and a couch in the background. Then they get their own room, then a nice studio, and now they have set up their own production company with a cool studio with lighting effects. It's just really cool to watch people get better at their art and be successful at what they love. And you get to watch things like Matt and Marisha's engagement to marriage, Liam's healing from a bad mental time, and Laura and Travis's baby be born. You get to watch a group of friends love each other and I just think that's really special.
So that's my opinion - it's what you have time for, and how you want to start. If you want to dip your toe in and get used to it, Undeadwood and similar oneshots/mini arcs are well-done and they're all pretty used to this by now so it goes smoothly. I cannot possibly recommend Exandria Unlimited: Calamity enough. But if you want to hop into the current, ongoing story, then you're at a good place to quickly catch up with Campaign 3. And if you have a lot of time on your hands, then Vox Machina/Campaign 1.
One note if you watch other stories first, and then go back to campaign one, have some patience when you do. It'll be like watching Star Trek: Discovery then going back and watching Star Trek: The Original Series. Be prepared for some bumps as they get used to being on camera, as they meander in stories because they're just fucking around, as they get confused about rules, and it really does look like they're filming this in someone's house on a tripod. Which is part of the charm! But can be a jolt if you start with the later stuff where they have a professional studio and a lot more expertise at this.
I hope this is all helpful to you! And I hope that whatever you choose, you have fun and enjoy. Stay safe nonny dear.

Eleven things I noted about CR2E99 “High Seas, High Stakes”
No Talks Machina about it because of reasons (the fucking pandemic) :
Last episode before the 4 MONTHS (!!!) shutdown. Yeah yeah hindsight is 20/20, but still, it feels extremely weird to know this fact and just... suffering from the future for them in the past - but that's a little absurd too because I was there, Gandalf ! well not for CR I litterally started during lockdown. But. I was there for those 3 weirdest months of our lives, and I remember this feeling of waiting for something. To start again. And it never fully did. I don't know, this little silly fact of it being the last episode before Covid has been making me think.
I think I'll take a little break from Campaign 2, maybe watch the other contents which I wanted to see : the rest of Travis Willingham's Yeehaw Game Ranch, Between the Sheets, All Work No Play, UnDeadwood, etc. etc. Because my process was both fully enjoying my position from the future who does not have to suffer pauses or fandom bullshit, but also experience what the fandom was doing and thinking at the time, unfiltered by time. So yeah, a little break. Also I want to see this other content.
THEY DRESSED NICELY for their 5 years anniversary, oh it's amazing. And Sam's song was so lovely, sometimes he is the nicest.
Vess DeRogna ? What is that bitch doing here ? Love that she has a French accent like, yes, evil lady is French.
Did Fjord just... birthed a stone ? Like, litterally ?
Beau tastes the tea first before Caleb. Travis, who is not in the scene : "Because you're immune to poison ? (under his breath, amused) You piece of shit."
Beau looks like Caleb's tough bodyguard, and Matt reminisces fondly live on air that time Marisha "got in a dude's face before with that look, it's not pretty." This is so cute, and reminds me of that post I've seen where the OP was like "I'd kill a dude for Matthew Mercer" and someone replied "That's nice but Marisha Ray who is awesome and trained in martial arts, would kill the dude herself" TRUTH
At the break, they played like usual the D&D Beyond ad, but with Ashley singing it a capella. BRILLIANT. Oh, there was also videos of the cast thanking the fans for 5 years of crazy. So cute ! Sam has a lot of shirts.
Beau, a useless lesbian, about Jester's sunburn : "Wow, it's weird, you get a little purple-ish when you get a sunburn. It's super cute. (reminds herself that she promised herself she won't do anything about her crush) I mean... it's deadly ! You could get sick from that !"
They did not let this go and I love them for it ! (Matt hates them) :
Tumblr media
If anyone asks, this is a reference to the episode where the horns sounds Matt made were made fun of by the cast in CR1, the episode where they were at Fort Daxio I believe ?
A DRAGON TURTLE ??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME, THAT'S THE CLIFFHANGER THEY DIDN'T KNOW WAS COMING ???? (I fucking love giant turtles that are small islands ever since I saw one in Avatar The Last Airbender)

Alright tho 2023 writing goals, very generally, are:
- update more Undeadwood stuff and finish at least one fic (witch Clayton au I'm looking at you)
- finish the OFMD SMAU, both sad Jim/Ed fics, the cowboy Jim/Olu au, and write some more whump. Also more smut.
- maybe write some original fic???
I'm hoping to focus a lot more on art this year, but I really adore writing. So here's to a rich writing 2023!
