Player Home: Two-Goats Lookout
"I'll admit, it took me a while to find this place: Not only is it out of the way, I thought the notation on my map was warning me to beware a pair of angry ungulates guarding the pass" -Barnabus Blythe, Coachman
Setup: Built half way up a rolling mountain on foundations set down by a barbarian warlord, this walled outpost overlooks a vast landscape of rolling foothills and plunging valleys  along the kingdom’s border. Serving both as shelter for travelers and staging ground for expeditions into the wild frontier, this forester’s fortress could act as a thriving home for a party focused on exploration and facing the challenges of the wilderness.
Adventure Hooks:
As it guards an important mountain pass, Two-Goats Lookout could be a good place for a first-time party to meet: drawn from local trappers, caravan travelers, and soldiers shipped out to the boonies to defend the kingdom’s furthest border. Hunting dangerous wildlife, protecting the footholds of civilization, and escorting foreign traders to and from nearby settlements can all provide a great backdrop for early adventures, to say nothing of the various caves and ruins scattered throughout the landscape waiting to be explored.
The party might first learn of the lookout while hunting a dangerous outlaw, who retreats to the disused outpost after kidnapping the scion of a noble house for ransom. After the brigands are dealt with, the innocent is returned, the party may realize mid-way through their looting that they’re now in possession of a reasonably established (if somewhat bloodstained) keep. Why not invest a bit of their looted spoils and hard-won reward and see about turning this into their personal clubhouse?
Alternatively, if the party were of an outlaw bent themselves, Two-Goats Lookout would provide an excellent hidden base from which to plot their attacks against a corrupt administration overseeing the local townships. Mostly forgotten though it might be, It’d be the perfect place to add a few fortifications, perhaps start assembling a band of merry individuals who also share the party’s problems with authority.
It’s not uncommon for nobles to be put into the position of having to reward groups of adventurers for their vital service in preserving the order of their realms. While some of these sellswords are professional and well composed enough to earn themselves a place at court, most mercenaries are about as crass and volatile as a powderkeg with political opinions. In this latter case, standing operating procedure is to load them down with gold or shiny weapons and hope they go away, but if the vagabonds DO want land, perhaps a fortress far, far, FAR, away from their benefactor’s own could do the trick?
Accommodations & Upgrades:
Though already sitting on enough stock and provisions to last out the winter or repel a marauding band of ogres, the Lookout has a long way to go before being truly self sufficient. Architects can be hired to make repairs and additions, artisans to craft gear from abundant local resources. Perhaps they should go about seeking some followers to fill the lookout’s many unused buildings.
A small temple to Erathis, the Lawbearer was built by one of the Lookout’s previous owners, but anyone who goes to pray there can tell that the shabby little shrine has something off about it.  The temple was actually built in a space considered sacred by the fortress’s original barbarous inhabitants, and the builder presumed to consecrate it in the name of his patron without asking either goddess.  This has left the outpost in a sort of spiritual limbo between the domains of the goddess of law, and the goddess of the wilds, Melora.  Rededicating the temple to either goddess could provide numerous blessings, With the Lawbearer granting safer roads and surer walls/ tools, and the Wildmother blessing the surroundings with bountiful game and favorable weather. Doing so would require some meditating, and perhaps acting as go-betweens to appease both gods.
Traveling about the hinterlands and befriending local traders is sure to give the party insight into sources of natural resources, as well as merchants willing to invest in some new ventures: after a year or two of good work the party might end up owners of a mine or lumbermill, a great source of downtime funds.
Further Adventures:
A series of odd occurrences among villages in the foothills leads the party to discover that a nearby peak contains a band of darkelf bat-riders, hunters and isolationists who aren’t above a little light caravan-raiding now and again. Maybe the party should make nice with their new neighbors before the two encampments come to blows.
After a series of inexplicably prismatic clouds begin raining random objects through the valley, the party is sent to investigate and discovers a rogue alchemist who’s set up shop (quite literally) on top of a nearby mountain after levitating his house away to escape his debts.
A series of clever passages connect most of Two-Goats Lookout’s buildings for ease of travel through the winter, but beneath these lays a blocked off series of chambers known as “The Deep Cellars”. Dating back to the time of the warlord, these chill dungeon chambers connect to a series of long buried caverns, and may infact contain the warlord’s final horde.
While the Deep Cellars do contain the horde, it is locked behind a curse-warded door that can only be opened by a key taken by the warlord to his tomb, a tomb that exists somewhere out across the mountains or down into the foothills. Perhaps the party can decipher the clues left within the caverns ( and do a little research on history) and discover just where this tomb might lay.

February 15th 1540  saw James V grant a letter under the Privy Seal to  Johnny Faa confirming his authority over the Egyptians.
Whilst it is believed that the Gypsies first came into Scotland about the middle of the 15th century, the first recorded reference to the ‘Egyptians’ would appear to be in 1492, in the reign of James IV, when an entry in the Book of the Lord High Treasurer records a payment to Peter Ker of four shillings, to go to the king at Hunthall, to get letters subscribed to the 'King of Rowmais’. Two days after, a payment of twenty pounds was made at the king’s command to the messenger of the 'King of Rowmais’.
They were charged to help Johnnie capture and punish a group of gypsies under the leadership of Sebastaine (or Sebastiane) Lalow and including two men of the name Bailzow. (Bailzow is believed to be Baillie, of which name people appear at Yetholm.)
This protection was renewed, in 1553, during the regency of Mary of Guise. By the time Mary Queen of Scots had come and gone and James VI came to the throne attitudes had changed and just like he did with the witchcraft act he began persecuting the Gypsies, in 1571, an Act of stringency was passed upon them and all the hangers-on which they attracted - bards, minstrels and vagabond scholars. During the next thirty-three years the penalties on the Gypsies increased, just as in England. The Court Records show how hanging, drowning and being deported were the order of the day for those convicted of being Gypsies.
An Act passed in 1579 refers to the gypsies as 'the idle peopil calling themselves Egyptians’.
This Act included the requirement that any person found to be a gypsy was to be nailed to a tree by the ears, and thereafter to have the said ears cut off. In 1603, the Privy Council ordered the entire race of gypsies to leave Scotland by a certain date, never to return on pain of death.
I  knew a  guy in Edinburgh dome years ago called Jimmy Blythe, who I was told was the unofficial King of the Gypsies, I didn’t pay that much attention to it back then, but later read about Charles Faa Blythe.
There are three distinct communities that identify themselves as Gypsies/Travellers in Scotland: Indigenous Highland Travellers, Romani Lowland Gypsies and Showman (Funfair Travellers).  The title King of the Gypsies has been claimed or given over the centuries to many different people. It is both culturally and geographically specific. It may be inherited, acquired by acclamation or action, or simply claimed. The extent of the power associated with the title varied; it might be limited to a small group in a specific place, or many people over large areas. In some cases the claim was clearly a public-relations exercise. As the term Gypsy is also used in many different ways, the King of the Gypsies may be someone with no connection with the  Romani people
Charles Faa Blythe was crowned King  of the Gypsies in an elaborate ceremony in the Borders village of Kirk Yetholm in 1898.  Blythe reigned until his sudden death on 21 April 1902, his coronation was not without controversy, many Gypsies insisted his brother, Robert was the rightful King, but  whoever, if anyone, was chosen as the new Gypsy King, there was no public coronation – and indeed there has not been another ceremony in Kirk Yetholm since. So maybe Jimmy was the King, I found him to be a nice guy, with a gift for telling stories, just the type of guy to be a true Gypsy.
Some gypsies have gone on to reach positions of great power. Bill Clinton, the former President of the United States, was born William Jefferson Blythe III and has never denied his Romany heritage. His father was a traveling salesman, Clinton’s mother took her second husbands name Clinton, hence you might not have known about the Blythe connection.
There are stories that the Gypsy King or Queen of Scotland still exists. The big question is: who are they, maybe the guy I know, who lives a quiet existence with his common law wife, just off Stevenson Road near Murrayfield Rugby Stadium in Edinburgh?

ILLEGIBLE’S TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE FAVORITE EORZEA COLLECTION DESIGNS: FEMALE
I’ve mentioned in the past, the main thing that made me start playing FFXIV properly was seeing people’s character designs. I’m still honestly blown away by the creativity and range of approaches people bring to this game, so I’ve decided to be an absolute madwoman and break my favorites into subcategories to share with anyone curious.
And to be clear. I’m not going to do something so broad as “oh top ten in-general :3″ because that would be sensible. No, I’m going to do it for all the current combat jobs. And all the current races. And different genders within the races and combat jobs as things stand. And I’m going to make a face-focus subcategory. And there are gonna be LOTS. Because I seriously cannot understate how inspired I’ve been by this community, and after however many years I just feel the need to vomit some incredible visuals I’ve encountered at you guys lol.
NOTE: In an abundance of caution, I want to stress this list isn’t a value judgment on anyone but a fragment of things that blew me personally away. Looking at the DRK sections it will be immediately clear that I Illegible really like that edgy dark knight aesthetic lmao, but there are plenty of non-edgy dark knights that I also love to bits. Other people might not like edgy dark knights. Due to a combination of size and search constraints plus trying to keep gear somewhat varied, these glamours are just what wound up on this particular list of mine. I could make another list one day. Other people can make lists too that are totally different.
Also, I was originally going to make a single post that went over male and female options presented in the character creator but straight up tumblr wouldn’t let me save because it got too big. You can see the male character post here.
Without further ado, let us begin.

Sarai’s Diary
Day 73
I arrived in West Cross today! I took some time to take a nap and clean up in the inn before going out into the town. It’s been mostly vilages villages in the Empire for a while now, so it’s really nice to be in the city. The people are nice, too! The innkeeper recommended a place to eat after I finished washing up.
There was a rough-looking Captain there attempting to locate hired hands to fulfill a job for him when I showed up. There’s stormclouds on the horizon for all-out war between the Empire and the Arboleans, unless we can find the leader of a nearby group of bandits and bring him back to West Cross.
I mean, of course I agreed to help!! I had to.
We set out after dealing with some of those vagabonds busting into the city. They were really faithful to their squad leader! His name was Roy; they said it so much, I doubt I could forget it! But they were hardly any trouble. The Captain seemed pretty upset when it was all over, though. It was all very strange. Maybe the gaurd guard situation hurt more than he is willing to let on.
There was also a lady whose son, Billiam, went missing. I dearly hope we can find him. A mother searching desperately for her beloved child... it hurts to think about not being able to help her. I hope Billiam is all right, somewhere out there.
It’s so strange, being outside the Pyrelands. The people in the Empire have so many of the same problems as the Char, and yet everything about the area feels so different. I guess that’s to be expected. We met an especially strange person named Apia Blythe in a metal coffin in the woods, and Ghoti helped open it up and then calm them down! They’re accompanying us for the time being. Truth be told, I don’t know what to make of them. They’re so quiet and hang back most of the time, and they have that strange magic wand and their funny body armor... I wonder where they’re really from. I don’t know if they’d ever tell me. I guess I can’t blame them if they didn’t!
There were some weird starfish. I don’t want to talk about it.
We’re taking a short time to rest before we press on, which is why I’m writing this now. Ghoti has such a sad air about him, but he seems very kind. I think he might be about my age? I hope he is, anyway. It’d be nice to make a friend out here, so far from home. Crescentia is... hard to read. She closes herself off, in that she doesn’t seem eager to get close to anyone here. I guess that’s reasonable, since we’re still mostly strangers, but it makes her nearly unreadable. She’s been reliable in a fight, though, and her voice is cute. Nell is... a complete mystery, actually. They’ve been keeping to themself so far. But they’re working hard toward this job as much as anyone else, so I want to respect their need for personal space.
Tumblr media
I hope it all ends up well! We don’t have a lot of time to complete this job, so we’ll all have to do our very best.

11 Questions
I got tagged by @pomegranate-belle <3 I'm sorry this took for fucking ever?!!??
I’ll tag @lioness--hart @fox-in-the-library and @whitegodiva if you guys want to do it? And anybody else, obvi <3
1. How long have you been writing?
Actually sitting down to type stories out? Eight years old. I've been making shit up since I could talk. I have it on good authority I am entertaining to listen to.
2. What are the major themes of your current wip(s)? LONG ANSWER
omg I really dont know. I spent several hours over several days banging on this question in my head both in front of the computer and away from it only to come to the horrified realisation that I Don't Know. *gay panic*
I know the things I like to write about. I like to write about free exchange of culture, of mutual respect and fraternity with your fellow humans (which leads to themes of unity, unconditional love not only of people but of the world, and the gray area of what it means to protect those things without giving in to hate, indifference and intolerance. THE GRAY AREA IS WHERE I THRIVE.)
I like to write about intergenerational relationships (which leads to themes of obsolescence, changing of the guard, and how people, in general, not individuals, never really change. Like, there's For a Good Time graffiti on the walls at Pompeii. That is HILARIOUS.)
I write a lot about family, both born and found. (Everybody has a place and everybody is loved.) I write about mental illness and being queer (which all by itself leads to themes of not knowing your place in the world even if you have one. Frequently comes up against the previously mentioned theme)
So yeah. I don't know. My big WIP, the Aalee Rise series, is about a young woman on the cusp of adulthood going out into the world for the first time. It's her idealism vs reality. The other main characters in that cast are all foils re: various facets of societal structure and ideologies. One challenges her idea of government, another her idea of religion. She falls in love, her loyalties to her brother and parents are tested, she makes mistakes, she fights monsters and saves the world. A lot.
tldr; It's my sandbox and I just wanted to build castles in it. I don't really know if the castles will mean anything when I'm done. I hope they do.
3. What do you want people to take away from your story once they’ve read it?
My greatest ambition is that I could ever write a hero as beloved as the heroes I read about growing up, figures that reminds not to give up hope, to get back up when we're down, that the dark times ahead of us will come to pass.
At best, if I've done that, I'll be ecstatic and satisfied.
At worst, as long as you had a good time, if you didn't throw the book across the room in disgust, I'll take it.
4. Would you be excited if people write fanfiction about your wip(s)?
YAAAAS. I would literally never read it because Im terrified of accidentally absorbing someone's ideas and making them my own bc Christ alive that's a legal nightmare, but yes that would make my life.
And you can have my firstborn if you send me fanart.
5. What’s your go-to writing beverage?
Tea. Really strong and sweet. I make a fresh quart each morning and usually go through it by the end of day.
6. Who is your favorite oc? Tell me about them!
OMG ALL OF MY CHILDREN ARE PRECIOUS. (it's Aalee.)
Aalee Dering is the eighteen-year-old protagonist of my Aalee Rise series.  When we meet her in volume one (Worldwalk) she and her twin brother are setting off on their coming-of-age journey around the country. Her people, the Noruahai, have defended humanity for generations from unearthly creatures called asmic, and if she wants to become a licensed Marshal like her famous mother (and wow, she really, really does) she'll have to prove herself on her Worldwalk.
Aalee thinks with her heart first and always. She loves beautiful things, and all things are beautiful to her. She's quick to cry and struggles with anger, as well as distraction; she has trouble keeping focus. Good for getting into trouble. Not so good when it comes to being a responsible adult.
It would probably be easier if she wasn't of two minds on every single decision she has to make. She empathises with everyone, which can be paralysing-- how can she fight someone whose point of view she gets?
7. Do you feel that mistakes are important learning tools in the writing journey?
Mistakes are learning tools of life, darling. In writing they generally aren't the types that will destroy friendships, health, financial status, etc, which means they're generally easier to bounce back from. Unless you commit career suicide in some way...
8. Rank your ocs by their capability in a footchase (either running after or from smth, your choice)
1. Fall from the Aalee Rise series. He's a complicated human. Without getting into the context of the world he's from, he's hard to explain; but the short version is he's half-ghost so he can basically turn himself into the wind.
2. Rosie Frey from Color of the Stars but only when she's a lion. In her human form she's pretty normal.
3. Lynn Blythe (or any of the other vampires) from Echoes of Eden, because they're cheating cheaterfaces who use mystical vampy powers to be stronger and faster than humans
4. Sendmarshal Henley from the Aalee Rise series. Probably the fastest regular human. Imagine the most beautiful, tall, leggy black woman you can, all lean muscle and elegant grace, and now imagine her scooping you up and zipping out of danger with an easy smile on her face... *fans self* I stan.
5. When running headlong into danger to save someone? Aalee Dering. When running away? Frustratingly, satirically slow. She's one of those idiot heroes who stops to make sure everyone got away okay so Fall's always running back to grab her ("MOVE, IDIOT" "But that little old lady--" "FIRE-BREATHING MONSTERS. MOVE.")
9. Does your wip have romance? tell me about it!! if not tell me about a friendship/important relationship in your wip!! MORE LENGTHY BLAH
Relationships are the driving force of my writing. How one loves or is loved by other people, how they relate and engage with others, is how one grows, in real life and in fiction. There are a number of relationships in all my series that I'm fond of for various reasons. (For instance, even though she cannot STAND him, I'm eager af to write Eden and Lynn's relationship in Echoes of Eden because of how complicated it is.)
And as a rule all of my characters are queer or questioning unless otherwise stated, and I ship everybody with basically everybody else, and almost everybody has a love story in their history. (at least, their parents certainly do because I am a gross vile romantic and these fuckers came from somewhere.)
That having been said, for the sake of brevity I'll stick with Aalee Rise and limit myself to the Big Three: Aalee and her brother Elles, Aalee and her best friend Norah, and Aalee and Fall.
FAMILY: Aalee and Elles are twins. Born together and never separated, which stands out in a world where families are broken up by chaotic circumstances and random death on a regular basis. Aalee is easily distracted and has difficulty communicating her thoughts, so she tends to act on impulse; Elles is forever the cool head and the hand grabbing her by the back of the shirt to stop her from walking into danger. And after eighteen years of this... he's tired of it. He loves his sister, but he longs to see the world on his own terms, walk his own path. And Aalee doesn't share that sentiment. Not only doesn't share it, but is blown away when it comes into play. Her partner in crime wants to break away, and she does not take it very well. The first volume (Worldwalk) explores how their relationship suffers, grows, and changes due to this break.
FRIEND: Aalee's best friend of ten years is Norah. They met as little girls in a monster-ravaged town; Norah was entertaining the youngest orphans with a story and Aalee joined in. The pair of them spent a long night keeping civilians from panicking while Marshals battled asmic beyond the walls of the bunker. They exchanged addresses and became penpals over the next few years, since both of their parents travelled and they were rarely in the same place at the same time. That changed suddenly when Norah lost her father. Since then, Norah's family and Aalee's have lived in the same town. Norah is her warm hand in the dark, her shoulder to cry on, the first person she tells any good news. for Norah, Aalee is the only person (at the beginning of the story, anyway) with whom she can be her real whole self. They love each other no matter what.
ROMANCE: And then there's Fall. Aalee meets Fall when she rescues him from being murdered in a back alley-- except, oops, turns out it was a sting operation to catch the killer because he's not actually the helpless filthy vagabond she assumed he was; he's actually a powerful Marshal who was on assignment. Stuck together for various reasons, he becomes a mentor to her on her worldwalk, while she blatantly digs into the mystery of who he is, which turns out to complicate their lives, the lives of their friends and families, randos they happens across, their enemies, and also God's. To say they fall in love with each other is an understatement of cosmic proportions. They choose each other.
10. Do you believe in the advice kill your darlings?
Yeah but I take the advice as intended; which is not, as most assume, kill your fave characters, but to get rid of that which does not work, even if you love it. That pearlescent line of dialogue, or that golden bit of allegory? Doesn't matter how much you love it and how proud of it you are, if it does. not. work. it HAS. TO. GO. (save it in a new file to reread when you feel down and scrap that shit from the main file.)
that said re: killing characters, in my youth I was very much of the George RedRum Martin camp of "KILL THEM ALL" but as Ive gotten older my main focal point has been "What purpose does their death serve?" Death is not the only sacrifice worth writing. So while I am not afraid to kill my characters, I do take the nature of their deaths in the writing very seriously. There has to be a point.
11. Do you prefer plotting or worldbuilding? Why?
WORLDBUILDING MANYEXCLAMATIONPOINTSGOHERE! Plotting is like the maths of writing. It's measurement, it's brickwork, it's demolition when the wall you put up last week is three feet too long and now you have to scrap it and start over. Vital. But not my favorite part.
Worldbuilding is the art. It's the music your OCs hum and the stories that they treasure and the faith that holds them up when the crap you throw at them might tear them down. It's the story behind the jacket they wear and it's the reason they nod to the altar when they enter a place of worship and it's the meaning of their names. It's the magic. How the world works, the little details that make it real to the reader because it's real for your characters, is my favorite part of writing.
