It seems like we often perceive hope as a potentially self-destructive pattern of behaviour. I've noticed my friends grow frustrated with my excessive optimism or hopeful ideas that may not —probably won't, realistically, pan out.
The disappointment that follows is acidic. I often swear, "That's it! I'm done!". And sometimes I am done. Most of the time I'm not. I'm probably sad and burnt out though. Lonely too.
There are occasions when the rewards of being hopeful don't align with my expectations... I remember how my friends reacted when I expressed my optimism about having a good school year at the start of term in September. And I totally get it. I had BIG ideas to build a sense of community with my classmates, to be more patient and understanding, only to find myself overwhelmed and experiencing a mental health crisis. I went back on my meds, which has yielded mixed results. It was disheartening, and I felt like being hopeful made me look naive and ridiculous to others. But it's not. It demands significant courage to have hope, especially in the face of constant pessimism (hello depression).
Still fucking hurts though. Gotta say.
