The Web House
Full disclosure—I did not have this all typed out before today, but this won the poll, and I do nothing if not deliver.
*cracks knuckles*
So, this is kind of an inverse to my already well-established AU, The Wittebane Archives, over on AO3—Luz is the Archivist and going through the horrors, there’s an equal amount of deep character moments as well as incredibly chilling encounters, it’s great, it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, please go check it out. You got tragic Lumity, tragic Huntlow, wholesome Veesha, Skara and Boscha content, and Belos being much more morally grey than you’d expect. Also, there’s some fucked-up monster content.
ANYWAYS!
I finally decided to do an AU where a young Jon ends up on the Boiling Isles, and I took a similar approach with the tone that I did with Wittebane Archives. In that story, while I still highlighted the horror of the world they live in, I decided to make it more manageable for the characters and give them chances to still find ways to feel human, reflecting the fact that TOH is a more gentle and optimistic show (and I much prefer happy endings to sad ones). So, with The Web House, I decided that the Isles in this world are the Isles we would’ve gotten if Dana had been allowed to do her original vision… which is to say, all of the scary and horrific parts are kicked up to their extent. No sugarcoating here, the demon realm is explicitly referred to as Hell.
Now, to the characters!
Jon: He is, of course, in the role of Luz. Rather than being a naive ray of sunshine from Connecticut, he’s a prickly, anxious, and socially awkward kid from Bournemouth who gets in trouble for his constant refrain of correcting the teacher, having no interest in the assignments, and his habit of reading during class. This eventually leads to him nearly getting sent to a camp for “troubled kids…” until his habit for wandering off and getting distracted by things that are out of the ordinary leads him to stumble in through a portal to the Boiling Isles. Once there, Jon is absolutely blown away by the wonder and horror of the world, and he finally finds something that he’s truly passionate about—though, time and time again, he’s told that he can’t do magic because he’s a human, and he gets very defensive about it. It takes him a while for his walls to come down.
Gerry: He’s Eda—a snarky, anti-establishment, laid-back criminal with a lot of trauma and a habit of unintentionally adopting kids. Instead of an Owl Beast curse, he has a Spider Beast curse, and is referred to as the “Web Witch” by the denizens of the Isles. Gerry was actually pretty happy pre-curse, mainly because his mother died before she could do a lot of real harm… but after getting cursed, everything came crashing down, culminating in Gerry accidentally blinding his father and running away to hide in the woods. Since then, he has a hard time really letting people in, and the fact that he’s a wanted criminal doesn’t help. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t regularly take in strays. (Also, the curse turns his hair black, but it’s naturally red. You’ll see why in a sec.)
Annabelle: She is a slightly more mature version of King—a spiderlike demon child that Gerry found and took in at a young age. Knowing full well that she’s adorable, she takes advantage of the fact that people think she’s sweet and naive to get what she wants, which leads to a lot of shenanigans in the first-season arc. As the story goes on, and she finally takes the push to learn more about her past, she starts learning how to be responsible and to be more honest with herself and others, though she never loses her talent for deception. She’s a curious and devious little kid.
Helen: She’s a Hooty equivalent. Just a sassy door being who helps keep the Web House in tip-top shape.
Agnes: She’s Lilith—Gerry’s older sister and the head of the Emperor’s Coven. Of course, Agnes being Agnes, she’s a lot less tightly wound than Lilith at first and is genuinely sweet and caring, just deeply misguided. She truly believes that Gerry joining the EC is the best option for him, and she’s always been tormented with guilt over cursing him. After leaving the coven, Agnes tries her hardest to make up for lost time, both with Gerry, Eric, and their great-aunt Gertrude, even if she really has no idea how to interact with people outside of being the polite and perfect role model. It’s a learning curve.
Basira: She takes the place of Willow, though her character development is less about being insecure and slowly gaining confidence and more about being stoic and apathetic and learning to express her emotions and fight for what she believes in. Basira has natural talent in both Beastkeeping and Plants, and while she initially thinks that switching to the Plant track would be better for her, she eventually decides to take both classes once it’s approved. She’s painfully logic-minded and has a lot of internal doubts about the coven system, though until she meets Jon and hears his casual breakdown of how valuing certain types of magic over others just doesn’t make sense, she doesn’t yet have the courage to voice it. On her end, Basira turns out to be just the friend that Jon needs—someone who believes in him, but isn’t afraid to tell him when he’s being an ass.
Georgie: She’s in Gus’s position, though instead of being a prodigy at Illusion magic, she’s a prodigy at Abominations magic… and is more than a little terrifying as a result. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a wonderful person, but her keen interest in both humans and in subsects of magic that are more than a little macabre can be a little off-putting to some, which is why Basira’s her only real friend at first. After their initial meeting, which consists of Georgie excitedly asking Jon for a blood sample and him being incredibly spooked by her amazement at meeting an actual human, the two end up getting along like a house on fire, and are basically enablers in each other’s chaos. Georgie’s family doesn’t have a lot of money or social standing in the Isles, so she works twice as hard in order to prove herself and get better opportunities. This leads to burnout. Frequently.
Melanie: She’s… okay, so, she’s Matt in that she’s a fellow member of Georgie’s human appreciation club and a new student at Hexside, though she and Georgie don’t really have a rivalry beyond friendly ribbing. However, she’s also Viney, in that she’s a member of the Detention track who helps kickstart multi-track studies. She and Jon don’t get along immediately, mostly due to the fact that he unintentionally ratted her out for studying both Oracle and Construction magic the first time they met, but the two form a begrudging alliance during a basilisk attack and later become actual friends. Melanie’s a sucker for drama and conflict, and she carries that with her—whether she’s in the Human Appreciation Society, the Flyer Derby team, or just hanging out with Georgie and the rest of the gang. She’s fun.
Martin: He’s Amity, in that he’s a depressed rich kid who’s severely isolated due to parental expectations. Due to his incredible talent at Illusions, a lot of kids end up coming to him when they need to cheat, though they never actually become friends with him due to everyone seeing him as a quiet weirdo who never had to work for anything. When Jon comes along, Martin is distrustful of anybody claiming to want to be his friend, and he doesn’t help things by accidentally demeaning Jon’s interest in magic—which, in Jon’s eyes, cements him as a rival. After a string of miscommunication and failed interactions, the two eventually reach a middle ground and become friends… which later leads into Martin developing a gigantic crush on Jon. Which is later reciprocated. Aside from the romantic drama, Martin learns to both become more open and to stand up for himself, becoming the kind yet bitchy individual we all know and love.
Tim & Danny: They’re Edric and Emira—Martin’s class-clown yet charming older brothers who love teasing their little brother and getting into general mischief. Tim’s the oldest, and he’s usually the one who shows a lot of actual worry towards Martin, though he’s still a very flashy individual and tends to do a lot of crazy things just for the hell of it. Danny, on the other hand, has some identity issues that stem from being a middle child who doesn’t quite know who he is outside of his family, and he tends to throw himself into something if he thinks it’ll make him stand out. They’re both illusionists, like Martin, and while Tim and Danny are biological brothers, all of them are adopted. (Also, Tim eventually starts taking Bard and Beastkeeping classes, while Danny starts taking Potions.)
Daisy: If my decision to make Basira Willow hasn’t tipped you off, Daisy is Hunter—the Golden Guard of the Emperor’s Coven, praised as a teen prodigy yet possesses no magical talent of her own. She’s loyal to the emperor and genuinely believes in everything she’s been taught, and she is absolutely horrible at expressing any emotion other than smugness or anger, believing fear and sentiment to be weaknesses and being deathly afraid of being perceived as anything other than strong. Daisy is a very vulnerable person underneath her hard exterior, and she can be incredibly soft with people she cares about… though, of course, she’s not given much opportunity to connect with anyone outside of the castle, or inside, for that matter. In the canon of TMA, Daisy is a truly fascinating character to me, and I knew that the only character she could feasibly be is Hunter—hey, person who did bad things for a cause they believed was just and had that illusion stripped from them, meet other person who did bad things for a cause they believed was just and had that illusion stripped from them. And they both love wolves. So, yeah, she’s a very traumatized child soldier who makes the gradual evolution into a protective big sister friend and a disaster lesbian.
Sasha: I had to make her Vee. I had to. Even if you take away the whole fact that she was NotThemed and how similar that is to the basilisks, the fact that she was almost made the Archivist makes her perfect for that role. Her general story is pretty much the same as in canon—she’s a basilisk who was created in a lab for the purpose of studying magic draining and ran away to the human realm, falling in love with it almost as soon as she arrived. Once in the human realm, Sasha develops a love for computers and manages to make friends with the people she meets at the camp (I’m not sure who they are yet, though I’m leaning towards making them Sam and Colin—Alice already has a role), and when she and Jon actually have a chance to meet, they almost immediately bond as siblings after the distrust and animosity is thrown out the window. Also, Sasha’s existence helps Jon finally fully connect with his grandmother, so… bonus!
Oliver: He’s Raine. As much as I love Doorkeay, I have a different role in mind for Micheal, and Oliver’s dynamic with Gerry as two gorgeous witchy goth men connected with The End is something that I’d love to see more of. Anyways, um… so, Oliver and Gerry’s story is pretty similar to canon—they met when they were in high school, were best friends from that point on, and eventually started dating, though they broke up due to Gerry being tight-lipped about the curse and Oliver eventually making the decision to join the Bard coven. Oliver didn’t start being a rebel leader right away, though, since he initially believed that the best way to fix things was by changing it from the inside, but after years of that not working, he finally caved and started the BATs. He’s very practiced at pretending that he’s just an unassuming workaholic, and he often claims stage fright in order to continue operating under the radar. Oliver’s a smart dude.
Trevor: He’s… well, he takes the position of Eberwolf as the Beastkeeping coven head, but he also acts as Darius for a lot of the story beats—mostly because he takes the role as Daisy’s actually decent paternal figure. Trevor comes off as an old grump who doesn’t like people or fun, and he’s seen many a Golden Guard die in his time as a head of a coven… so, when he sees Daisy be rebellious for the first time in her life, his wolf dad instincts kick in. Not quite sure where Julia fits in yet, but she’ll fit in. Somewhere.
Jane: Terra. She has to be Terra. Gross plant woman who pretends to be sweet but is actually psychotic. She’d definitely suggest turning children into mulch as an apt punishment for failing a small challenge.
Nikola: Same deal, she’s Adrian. She can’t be anyone else.
Peter: He’s in the position of Odalia—an antisocial yet jovial businessman who reeks of old money. He also deals in security and weaponry, though he primarily uses oracle magic instead of Abominations, and he’s very interested in studying the effects illusion magic has on the mind. Of course, he can’t actually practice illusion magic, so he has to turn to other avenues for research… such as adopting three gifted illusionists. Needless to say, Peter is not a good parent by any measure,  and he kind of holds the fact that he adopted his sons over their heads so they don’t step out of line. Unfortunately, the kiddos don’t have an Alador equivalent (as far as I’ve decided), so the only person they can really go to outside of each other is Peter. Not a good environment, really. And it’s definitely complicated by the reason why their dad has all this standing and power, beyond just the family connections…
Elias/Jonah: So, he is in Belos’s place as the emperor who’s secretly a human witch hunter, but his motivations aren’t the same. Rather than planning on killing witches simply because he hates magic, his intention is to drain the magic from them and take it for himself—well, for humans, but mostly himself. Elias is also a lot more… shall we say, lax about interacting with other witches, which is why he has zero qualms with having an on-again, off-again relationship with Peter Lukas. And several other men throughout his time on the Isles. Yeah, Philip may be too deep in a Puritanical mindset to claw his way out of Narnia and admit that he’s not straight, but Jonah is a harlot and that’s a part of his character that stays constant. I’m not gonna go into his backstory, for spoiler reasons, but I will say that Gwendolyn is a Caleb equivalent, and Alice is her Evelyn. I’m riding on the Dyhard train and you can’t stop me.
Micheal (Distortion): And last but not least, I couldn’t make our boy Micheal anybody other than The Collector! I know that technically, he and Helen are kind of the same character, but she just doesn’t have the silly vibes that he does. All I can really say is that his story is… well, it matches up with in canon, except he’s more of a preteen than a kid. We know so little about Collie’s past outside of the events that led them to be trapped, and what we know about Micheal himself—pre-Distortion, of course—is equally as murky and unclear, so… yeah. He’s a funky neon star kid who originally manifests as a funky shadow kid.
And yeah, I think that’s it for now.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
So first and foremost: D’aw! Vee made a welcome back home sign for Luz, that’s so sweet!
Secondly: Dang, there are a lot of photos of Luz on this wall. Only child privilege right there. Speaking of which, I wonder how Luz is going to deal with not being the only child anymore?
Thirdly: We see Manny show up in some of these photographs, yet painfully absent in others. The fact that we just found out his name and got visual reminders here gives me hope we’re going to get further exploration of how that loss affected Luz.
Fourthly: I have got to stop paying so much attention to the layout of this house, because it is driving me insane. At this point, I’m halfway convinced that either this house is a Tardis, or some weird dimensional magic leaked into Gravesfield through the portal and messed with the inner proportions of this house. Because I’m like 76% sure this hallway is longer than the house. And don’t think I’ve forgotten about the weirdness with the windows in Yesterday’s Lie.
Tumblr media
”Yeah. I’m home. But they’re not.”
Are ya though, Luz? Are you home?
I don’t doubt she thinks of Gravesfield and Camila as her home and I’m sure she’s relieved to be back there, to have been reunited with her mom.
But at the same time, and I have brought this up before, Luz is kinda a child of two worlds at this point. With Eda serving as not just a mentor and role model, but as an adopted bonus mom. It’s never been explicitly stated Luz feels that way and it might be that she doesn’t even really know it herself. But she knows King considers her his sister, and he considers Eda his mom, so… There are some other clues sprinkled in here and there witch I won’t get into right now.
The important thing is this: Eda and King (and Hooty… oh, and her cool aunt Lilith!) are just as much her family at this point as Camila is. And home isn’t always a place, but more often than not, the people you’re with, your family.
This is all to say that I think that for Luz to truly feel at home, her Demon Realm family and her Human Realm family will have to unite.
I’m sure the guilt she feels for getting her friends trapped in another dimension, forever separated from their families is not helping these confused feelings.
(sidenote: it’s still great seeing Amity & Willow be good friends)
Tumblr media
With this music kicking in, this is either gonna be an intro, or a montage.
Tumblr media
Montage it is! I figured we’d get at least one of those, considering they had to cram an entire season into three episodes the length of six episodes.
Lumtiy Studios, absolutely perfect. Gold quality. No, wait, iridium quality! That’s a Stardew Valley reference for all the gamers out there. Speaking of which, I started on a new farm. Who should I marry this time?
(right before Luz opens her laptop, you can see some of the stickers she has on it… including one that looks a lot like Owlbert. Not sure where she got that one.)

DID YOU SEE WATCHING AND DREAMING. I CRIED.
Oh, I saw it!
First of all, I'm genuinely impressed that they wrapped things up in such a succinct and satisfying way after Disney pulled the rug out from under them. Apparently, (and I only just learned this) The Collector wasn't even part of the original plan? He was added after they found out they weren't getting a Season 3? That is wild, but in hindsight, yeah, I can kind of see it. And sure, we didn't get everything we wanted - personally, I'd have loved more development of Phillip's backstory - but overall it was a powerful conclusion. One thing that comes to mind is that we don't get much resolution on The Collectors/Archivists, even though to be frank, they are a problem. Enslaving and genociding their way across the universe, but the story just didn't have time to dwell on that. I've also seen people lament that this was mainly a showcase for the original three protagonists and that the ensemble didn't have much to do. True enough, but they're also called protagonists for a reason. It started with Luz, Eda, and King. It had to end with them too.
It's curious how there are multiple points where the story does a fake-out with The Collector and makes you think they're going to be the new Big Bad, but they never are. Certainly the end of King's Tide and the beginning of For The Future implied as much, but in the end it was always Belos. (And to a lesser extent, Kikimora.) I've got a whole post in the works about him, because I genuinely think he's one of the greatest villains ever written in modern media, which is a surprise even to me, but he totally is. And since this is the final episode, Dana dropped all pretense and had Belos scream that he would "cleanse this Perdition" himself. Which is a religious term. Yep, he's a Puritan bigot, and they're coming right out and saying it now. By contrast, we learn a lot more about The Collector and how he was never the bad guy. Seeing him sobbing in the corner, lonely and desperate for a friend...learning how the Archivists used him, enslaved his friends, and abandoned him...only for him to take the blame for their crimes...god, can you see why they're an unresolved issue? Fuck the Archivists. But by far, one of the most chilling lines was "So? Toys break all the time. You just fix em." Like. Wow. It explains so much, and gives us some insight into Collector/Archivist culture.
Belos possessing The Titan's corpse is something I never saw coming, but it works for me because Belos didn't realize it was possible either. Any more than he realized King was The Titan's son. Why would he? I love his surprised reaction, "The dog?" Especially coming from Raine's voice. I have to give credit where it's due to their voice actor. I bet it was a lot of fun to play Belos during those lines. But speaking of The Titan, I never expected to see him either, but man oh man do I love him. I can't really bring anything new to the conversation about how wonderful he is. From how he acts like Sans, to the casual way they reveal that he's bi-gendered, to the implications of a Hooty-like appendage sticking out of his eye socket. (Why didn't Hooty get any lines, by the way? That's a little disappointing...) Like he might be some kind of maggot that grows on Titans or something. I adore The Titan and his laid-back, good-natured attitude, complete with a bread pun message for his son! The way his works about Luz choosing herself echo back to Eda's words, and how Luz finally does it. I can't get enough of her Titan Form, by the way. Especially since it reminds me of Harpy Eda, and seems like Luz has taken on aspects of both her best friends. (Shame Amity never saw it, though...)
In general, Luz as a hero of this story works really well.
I'm not a fan of the fake-out death trope but they really got the most out of it here. (Similar to Frozen 2.) They reveal almost immediately that Luz is still alive, and what matters is that her loved ones think she's dead. The Collector is forced to deal with loss for the first time and he does not know how to handle it at all. King's rage is awe-inspiring, as is Eda's line about how she can't control herself. In general, the moment of Luz dying to save The Collector, in their failed attempt to pull the forgiveness trope? Oh my stars, that was poignant. And the actual scene of her simultaneously dissolving into goo and yet also turning into light? I don't know how else to describe it but if you saw the scene, you know what I'm talking about, right? The way The Camilia doll sheds a tear. The ball of light falling into the pool of liquid and turning back into Luz as it does. Luz's final thought being a realization of how she should have said goodbye. Like, oof...for a split second, I honestly thought we were losing her. Oh, and the music. The music told us Luz was dying long before anything else did. That track punches your feelz.
But I also love how there's an inversion of what we've come to expect. How Luz's friends are all using Glyphs but she, for the first time, doesn't need them. With the Titan's power, she can cast magic the normal way, with Eda guiding her in how to do it. It feels like comradery, like teamwork, like everyone coming together to save The Isles. Right down to Luz's declaration to Belos at the end. How she is both a child of the human realm and student of the demon realm. Unlike him, she didn't reject either world. She embraces both parts of herself. "Now eat this, sucker!" Ah, so satisfying. I'll talk more about Philip's death in my master-post about him, but since I'm just showering praise on Luz right here, I absolutely love her reaction (or lack thereof) to his final, last-ditch effort to scheme his way out of this, and his subsequent death. Like he said, she just stands there. The Boiling Rain doesn't even hurt her - since, at least in that moment, she's not human anymore. Philip's pretense is figuratively and literally stripped away as the rain causes his human form to melt and reveal the monster underneath. And Luz is all out of fucks to give. She and everyone else have been fooled too many times. It's not going to work this time.
...and then the whole thing is ruined with the stomp-out death, and a serious, poetic moment is played for laughs. Yeah, I know people love this, but I just wasn't a fan of it. Totally kills the tension, and it's not worth it when Belos is a character who hasn't ever come anywhere close to the comedy in this show. He's always been played straight. Also, The Collector smashed him into a wall at full speed, and that didn't kill him...but getting stepped on does? How? Why? It's just a little weak...
But never mind that, time to talk about the ending and epilogue!
I know a lot of people were disappointed that The Collector didn't stick around and get adopted into the big found family, but I like this. One, they were never looking for a family. They were looking friends. That was the word they specifically and repeatedly used. King and the others are still going to be their friends. Cause like, The Collector isn't leaving forever. The final scene proves that. They come and visit. Possibly all the time. But the point was made that he has a lot of growing up to do, and I love that. I love that it was his realization, too. And that final moment between him and King made me sob, even if everyone predicted it. I like how Luz loses the ability to use her magic, and I wouldn't even have minded if that had been permanent, but I also like how there's hope for something new. Hunter gets reunited with Darius (but not explicitly adopted by him. Hunter Noceda fans, y'all are still valid.) and there's seemingly no punishment for Odalia, but also no love. Alador gets a big hug, she gets squat.
Dana, I swear, that fake-out in the epilogue was uncalled for. "After all this time..." Had me gaping. But I will say that Camila's "Luz, you saw them last week." Was perfectly delivered and very funny. Vee is as cute as ever and I love the implication that she became Luz's adopted sister like we all wanted. Luz majors in everything because of course she does, (honestly, I can relate) and I don't even care that the new doorway to The Boiling Isles is incredibly conspicuous and easy for humans to stumble upon because Headmaster Eda! Head. Master. Eda. It's perfect. Amity's redesign makes her look like a pirate, I love it, she actually kind of resembles Alador. Gus's hair is on point, Willow's lost of a ton of her baby fat, and-excuse me? Blue Jay? Blue?! Jay!? Hunter got a new Palisman! And his name is Waffles?!? Nope, sorry, I can't. Nothing could destroy me more than thi-Flapjack has a grave?!?!? Yeah, no. I'm done. I'm out. Dana, you want my heart? Take it. This is just too much. Blair out.
I'm going to miss this show. So, so much.

Who made the Portal?
(No seriously, who made it?)
Tumblr media
The portal door has always fascinated me because its purpose and creation is such a mystery. (I love backstories what can I say?) But for me specifically, it's the catalyst of everything: the past, the present, and the future it is literally the beginning of how the story began.
Tumblr media
Luz is introduce to the Boiling Isles and to all of the magic, wonder, and danger it surrounds itself in. There she meets the infamous witch criminal Eda Clawthorne or simply known as the The Owl Lady and her egotistical but very cute monster like roommate King. Through many shenanigans and problems, Luz eventually begins to make a name and most importantly a home for herself in the Boiling Isles. That is until Emperor Belos, the sinister villain of the story, sends in Lilith to arrest Eda and have her be forced to join a coven or else. But it turns out he only wants to take the portal of the human realm for his mysterious purpose and have Eda petrified as punishment regardless of his promise to Lilith to heal her sister
I wouldn't be surprised at all that the portal door is what Belos was after the entire time and not the Owl Lady herself since Eda had it during most of her entire time as a wild witch.
But where did it come from and why or how did it come to Eda's possession?
Tumblr media
According to Eda herself, she had found the portal when she was young. She had ran away home and had accidentally found it in an abondoned home/garden behind the Clawthorne estate (and ever since then had been using it for the past 30 + years to escape the Emperor's Coven and her mother). But why was it hidden in the estate in the first place?
This is a point I'll return to, don't worry!
But then the next question is who built it?
Because the doorway itself is unique in how it is portable and can be opened anywhere in the demon realm but its entrance is fixed to an abandoned house in Gravesfield, Connecticut (behind the home of Luz Noceda) and neither Eda or Luz knows why.
It is only once Luz destroys the portal, so that Belos doesn't get his hands on it to use it for his plans on the "Day of Unity", that she begins to try searching for answers to how to return to the human realm and along the way figure out the mysterious origin of the portal door.
Luz then hears from Gwendalyn Clawthorne (who according to their great grandmother) that Titan's blood has the power capable enough to travel between realms though it is rare. Especially for a human. But mentioned there once was a human who lived in Bonesburough. One day he disappeared and was never seen or heard from again. The only thing the human left behind was his journal that he donated to the library sometime in the 1600's.
That human is Philip Wittebane and he is, without a doubt, the most dangerous monster the realms have ever known.
Tumblr media
Philip Wittebane, at his initial introduction, was seen as a parallel to Luz as someone who found themselves in a strange land of magic and danger. Luz begins to identify herself to him as she looks through his journal to uncover how he created the portal door and return home herself. However as Luz learns more about Philip, the more she realizes that he is not at all that he claims to be.
It's soon revealed that Philip is actually Emperor Belos and is a Witch Hunter that wants to destroy all witches and demons to "protect" humanity.
Tumblr media
But even before becoming the witch known as Belos, he was already a manipulative, dangerous individual who only sought to become the "hero" he believes he was destined to be. But most importantly, Philip is someone who constantly lies and hurts others to get his way no matter what.
He even lied to the fact he never even built the portal door. If Philip had truly created it then he wouldn't have needed to steal it from Eda in the beginning.
Then if not Eda or Philip, then who?
I believe it was a Titan Trapper.
Tumblr media
When we were introduced to the Titan Trappers, it's shown that they live on the other side of the world. While it is not impossible to travel there by sea, the trappers were able to make transportation more feasible by using Titans Blood as a makeshift portal to travel instantly.
It makes sense once you think about the fact the Trappers are the only witches that truly know how to harness the power of a Titan. After all to be able to kill a beast, one needs to know everything about it including its weaknesses and strengths.
Then wait, why is it that the portal's entrance in the human realm is always in Gravesfield?
This is where it gets complicated. Because if Philip never created the portal door, then why is it's fixed entry point always at Gravesfield? Well that because we've assumed that Luz and Philip were the only humans to have gone to The Boiling Isles but in actuality there was another.
Caleb, Philip Wittebane's brother, is the other mysterious human that arrived in Bonesburough.
Tumblr media
It's likely Caleb helped build the portal with a witch and had its entrance to the human realm be his home town. He most likely made it so that he could travel between realms whenever he wanted to. Being able to exist in both realms and live life happily to where the wind takes him.
But then why have we never heard of Caleb much less even know about his existence?
The reason why we never knew of Caleb's existence was because of Philip and this is where each of the brothers fate takes a tragic turn for the worst.
So far according to Philip's memories and Gravesfield history, Caleb and Philip grew up wanting to be witch hunters. One day they encountered a real witch and, while Philip was afraid of them, Caleb ended up accepting (and falling in love) with them. Caleb and Philip somehow got separated and both ended up in the Demon Realm. Caleb began to love and accept his new home while Philip wanted nothing more but to destroy and "save" his brother from the evil witch.
Philip upon finding his brother soon after discovers that Caleb had fallen in love with the witch and no longer wishes to hunt them.
Philip then killed Caleb for his "betrayal" and began a centuries long plan to rid the world of witches and demons. And once Philip succeeded on his plan, he could return home not just as the greatest witch hunter in the world but as a hero of humanity.
But how could he return home if there is no portal back to the human realm?
Tumblr media
Because the portal door was missing! (Told you I'll come back to this!)
This is why the portal door was found abandoned in the Clawthorne estate; it was likely hidden away by the very same witch that helped Caleb build it. She may have been an ancestor of the Clawthornes given that the portal door was hidden away at their estate and did it as a preventative measure to keep it away from Philip who would use the portal door for his selfish and dangerous purpose.
That is until Edalyn Clawthorne found it again years later
Perhaps the witch was not only a Clawthorne but also in fact a former Titan Trapper who taught Caleb the secrets of magic and eventually led him to the Demon Realm where he finally found a place to belong.
(I'm sure we'll learn more about him and her in season 3.)
That would mean that Caleb and the Witch built the portal door together with the witch's knowledge of Titans Blood and Caleb's skills in carving would have helped in building a portal that would connect to a location that was personal to them.

toh finale thoughts i need to spew psychic damage yada yada
at least eda got to help luz carve her palisman before she LOST HER FUCKING ARM I GUESS. like father like daughter kek
the collector has so much autism in fact that's what he collects. also i love how they rejected 'mr' and called it boring. canon the collector's title is mx.
gus absolutely blasted by philip's memories ohmygod. he saw everything he's gonna know that philip and caleb like founded gravesfield together or some shit. also sobbing when he came through the portal? good hunter hug the boy he's crying he's never gonna see his dad again
also confirmation that philip's older brother was called caleb, and that flapjack was caleb's palisman HELLO????? belos took one look at flapjack for the first time in centuries and remembered he held a grudge against that guy. i'm guessing caleb's partner or whatever helped him with that, and considering the clawthornes were historically palisman carvers, and philip and caleb carved masks as kids, i wonder where that started. also will never stop talking about caleb wittebane not sorry
king my baby little boy small guy fluffy u ok bud? ur like three feet tall and like yeah your blood or whatever might be the most powerful source of energy in the known multiverse but imma be honest unless you can literally give people magic like ur dad idk how much help you can be. that being said we did get confirmation that king's dad Is actually the boiling isles and did die trapping the collector. which suggests that king's real age is somewhere between 8 and multiple millenia
which brings up the question of what the collector actually wants. bc we know they wiped out the titans, we know they trapped the owl beast, we know they have the cult, but like what actually do they want. was it like a hunting for sport type of deal or?
hunter sweetie cmere i'll hug you dw
no raeda kiss? raine looking like they're fucking dead? might actually sob about this one
also sorry mrs camila noceda you have 6 kids now. betcha didnt see that one coming haha
willow didn't do much this episode but i didn't expect her to tbh. still girlbossed belos tho
i'm guessing next season we're going to have two groups of rebels. in the human realm we'll have luz, amity, willow, gus and hunter, maybe camila and vee by extension, and in the demon realm eda, darius, raine and eberwolf (if they're still alive), lilith, hooty, probably alador and bump, at a stretch kikimora, terra and gus' dad. i wonder how they're going to reunite, because i don't know how they'll progress without at least working towards that goal. also don't know what the collector is going to do to king bc they weren't actively hostile to him, even when he knew king was the titan's son, so like what is the collector's deal with exterminating the titans actually
not much to say about amity this episode uhhh i guess she didn't want to leave luz behind to face the collector alone but like this is nothing new for amity she just needs to be w/ her girlfriend at all times. also i love how at the end she's standing so politely bc this is like meeting her girlfriend's mom for the first time she needs to be on her best behaviour lol
i need the human realm crew to try out some spanish food. if they can stomach it lol bc i know interdimensional food isn't always the most compatible with the digestive system

Hollow Mind
Holy shit hooooly shit holyshit oh damn. Let's do this. god this will be long
This episode is proof that just because something was fairly predictable, it doesn't mean it'll be bad. It means the story did its job. Execution is what matters and boy was this intense
I was worried how much time we'd spend in setting up this crazy situation but it literally starts with it lmao nice
love how they went *RECORD SCRATCH* you're probably wondering how I got in this mess
Gotta say however I'm surprised they didn't just show that the 3 hooded figures were Darius, Raine and Eberwolf. Like, it's pretty obvious ahaha I expected them to just show their faces at the very end but oh well
Imagine if they'd actually gone inside his mind with no interruptions tho, would they have gathered information or also attempt to destroy something?
I hope we manage to fix Luz's cape btw
the use of cute bunny walkie talkies to keep a connection to them was fun, I was wondering how they were gonna get out
interesting contrast between people gasping like "don't let the titan hear you" vs in the past when they were like "wdym he talks to the titan, the titan is dead?"
and she cares so much about how people treat Eda. I love her
Tumblr media
wise words from King, and as soon as I heard them I was like ah I know a certain blonde kid who matches that description
also fits how affected he was back in Echoes of the Past. it's not easy to have your whole perspective change in an instant
hearing the whole propaganda of Belos is keeping us safe from ourselves :) and the contrast of him lying and controlling is so so creepy ahh
"I'm the youngest scout to become Golgen Guard" "I never found out what happened to the previous one" "why does Darius look so sad here?" triple hit combo of pure FEAR
knowing what we know, Darius was close to the previous GG, and called him his mentor and a powerful witch. since we were told all the grimwalkers look the same, while not identical, I assume Darius knows what Hunter is and is horrified at Belos
were some of the grimwalkers able to do magic I wonder?
Every. Single. One of them. has betrayed him. the previous one did too and told Darius. and the very first one also did
I had a hunch the brother was much more like Luz (and the Hunter we know now), someone curious and caring who loves magic, who wants to learn about it and isn't ok with hurting people. Someone who trusts maybe a little too much, but someone who will eventually decide to fight against his own family for what's right
goddd I haven't even reached the pictures yet
OBSESSED with Belos characterization. he has this fake, cold hallway with epic paintings of his "success" even inside his own fucking mind. he has this little kid guide them around to lure them into a trap, to toy with them and to scare and confuse them, and to help himself get rid of a problem
I love how they introduce the possibility that there is some guilt, some regret, some innocence? within him? only to say no, Belos is just a frighteningly good manipulator. always has been
his hand is shaking Imma kick Belos into the Boiling Sea myself
splat
Tumblr media
Addressing all the paintings with the brother in one go:
it looks like he was older. I bet he was protective
I feel we 100% must get another flashback later on we NEED it
I thought there was the smallest, tiiiiiniest chance the first brother had been killed in an accident. I don't anymore
from Yesterday's Lie we know the two were taken to the isles by a witch, and I wonder if while the brother loved it, wanted to belong, maybe learned to carve a palisman from a Clawthorne ancestor who knows wink wink Philip hated it, hated how much more powerful witches were compared to him, he felt threatened
there's one painting where the brother's body looks like it's posed similar to the Titan and I DO NOT LIKE IT
Hunter loves Flapjack so so so much and I am still scared Belos will hurt that little bird just to hurt the kid
Hunter: "I love you over and out"
Eda, King, me, everyone: AWWWWW
as soon as I saw that Eda and the rest were preparing the spell in the Owl House I was like oh good this means both of them will appear there! and then after I sec I was like.... hopefully
Hooty is iconic. best bird owl tube house him!
Tumblr media
Darius turns around and decides to help the SECOND he realizes Hunter is in there too. He knows he might get trapped there for good but he also knows what he might see...
Belos has always treated the Golden Guards like dirt, seems like he's so bitter towards the original yet he keeps creating more. the fact the brother was older and now the guards are always younger and younger as he keeps aging, always working under him...
this expression perfectly encapsulates my feelings for that whole scene as well
Tumblr media
there's a painting for Lily and Luz meeting Philip!!! wild
Tumblr media
I ADORE the Collector's design and wild personality, not what I expected. super curious about their motives and why are they seemingly trapped in that state. What even are they. Maybe an accidental curse. or maybe cursed by someone else, not so accidentally
either, way, seems we might meet them at the Day of Unity. hooray??
god, this poor kid having to find out in such a way... the way Belos talks about him as an object, as replaceable. brutal
this is absolutely horrifying. a hallway full of all the "failed attempts" before you
Tumblr media
those poor consumed palismen, fused together into a grotesque monster stuck inside a real monster's mind. yikes
"out of all the grimwalkers, you looked the most like him" old man I will end you
the Witch Hunter thing. is so so cruel. A witch hunter pretending to be a witch savior, creates the grimwalkers and names them Hunter while convincing them they're helping the witches! that is some twisted joke
I wonder if the brother's name was Hunter or something else
LUZ IS SO BRAVE SO COOL SO KIND SO BADASS SO SMART
I wanna point out Luz had no reason to connect Belos to Philip. before or after she found out he was a jerk, he was still a human. a human who lived in the Isles, built the door and for all she knows left back to Earth and died centuries ago
of course the only way through Hooty is romantic drama
they used all the titan blood. all of it
Tumblr media
gotta point out that Luz keeping the jacket and it actually being relevant to saving Hunter makes me emotional
HE USED GLYPHS
I noticed since they've first met, Hunter calls Luz "human" but at last he shouts "LUZ!" I'm not crying you're crying
kid was freaking out and ran away... at least his palisman is with him!
and now Luz has learned A LOT but it is concerning how Belos just. let them. I guess he did assume they wouldn't escape but he was still pretty calm. scary stuff
Ok like I said this was A LOT of info so this is long and I didn't even talk about everything but I wanna speculate a lil bit about next week's episode under the cut ;)
Ok, next week we get King focus and I feel it'll be a big one as well! from the promos there aren't a lot of shots left that could be from that one but there is this one I assume will be from it
Tumblr media
seems like Luz and Hooty will be accompanying King but not Eda
So I am wondering where will Hunter go? I think there's a chance we don't find out til later, he could be by himself with Flapjack, or Darius could've seen him run out and went after him. But I would be totally down for a B plot of Eda looking for him. It's not super likely but she did seem concerned so I thought I'd mention it! see ya next week

Stitched Back Together
AO3
first Owl Fight attack, woo! The prompt for this one was “Luz and Raine hanging out”
Summary: Free of Kikimora's control, with scars carved into their skin, Raine is taken back to the Owl House. Awake in the middle of the night, unable to sleep after their whole ordeal, they officially meet Luz. Talking to one of Eda's kids really shouldn't be as intimidating as it feels.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
When Raine first saw the kids, truly and consciously, there were thorns retreating from their eyes and scars etched onto their skin as Eda held them tightly.
Eda’s sclera had turned black, hands hooked into talons with wings arched over their heads, and was at least two feet taller than when they had last seen her. And there had been a lot to ask about there, and possibly some gawking, but this isn’t about that.
Because as soon as Raine could stand, Eda holding their hands tightly and almost brought to tears at how relieved she was to see them alright, to know there would be no more harm done to them, Raine noticed the two figures far across from them, holding back the few guards trying to intervene.
They recognized them quickly, from the photo that had twisted a hole into their chest, because Eda had kids and she had spoken of them with such desperation and love--
The girl had turned, and Raine knew then they hadn’t been imagining the round ears when they first saw the photo. She had the young demon they recognized earlier clinging to her back, and they both looked at Raine with confusion. The demon’s had been accusatory, but the humans, she had to be a human, looked nothing but curious.
It had all passed by in a blur, the escape from the guards and Eda bundling them into the Owl House, frantic as she continued to check them over, never slowing in her talking as the wings and sharp edges retreated back into her body, which Raine may have quietly mourned the loss of. They suited her.
The human and demon had watched from the background, occasionally offering assistance towards or around the two, but more or less giving them space as Eda fretted and explained all she could to Raine, clinging like she was afraid if she didn’t, Raine would vanish again.
They heard of what Kikimora had done to them, of what Belos had done to them, of what they had done. Of Eda’s acceptance of the curse, of the rest of the BATs being in the Conformatorium (something they both agreed on fixing as soon as they could), of everything that Eda could think to catch them up on.
There would be time to unpack all of that, to formulate plans, to talk about everything beyond what Raine had missed out on. But that could wait until another day, could wait until Raine had gotten rest, and a moment to reorient themselves.
And yet, they still found themself in Eda’s kitchen, nearing midnight, with a cup of tea that looked suspiciously like the one Lilith had liked in their hands.
They knew they should be asleep, it was late, and knowing Eda, there would be far more to fret about in the morning. Eda had offered her nest, but Raine had taken the couch, not exactly willing to voice their opinion on how Eda’s nest did not look comfortable.
They were thankful for it later, too, when they awoke after barely an hour of sleep with the feeling of vines wrapped around their throat and muffled, begging cries as their hands moved of their own accord.
They sighed and slumped against the counter, setting down the cup for a moment to rub at their wrist, where scars from the reaching thorns still lay. They faded the further the scars stretched up their body, but they figured the ones along their wrist and arm would last for the rest of their life.
It wasn’t too bad, a scar was really the best thing they could’ve asked for. They stared down at their tea, thoughts swirling and not even bothering to try and sort any of them out. Later, when their wrist didn’t have a phantom ache.
“Oh, hey.”
Raine startled, almost knocking their cup over as they whirled their head around.
The human stood in the doorway, looking a bit surprised at Raine’s reaction. She had clearly just woken up, hair a frizzy mess and eyes still blinking with sleep.
“Oh, um, hello.” Raine said, forcing themself to relax. “Sorry, is there something you need?” They asked, wrapping a hand around their tea.
“I just came here for a snack,” The human shrugged, breezing right by the counter and towards the cabinets.
Raine nodded, mostly just to themself, and went back to staring into space, trying to pretend the awkward tension hadn’t suddenly arisen.
They realized after a moment that the girl had paused in what she was doing, hand still in the cabinet door, but taking nothing out. They looked up for a moment, and caught the girl watching them with a contemplative look on her face until she realized she had been staring and jerked back to shuffling through the cabinets.
“So,” Raine said, in some attempt to break the tension, leaning their arms across the counter. “You’re Eda’s kid?” They said, grimacing slightly at how off that had come off sounding.
“Er, yeah,” The human said, frowning at the cabinet before shutting it again and opening a different one. “And you’re...Raine.”
“You’ve heard of me, then?” Raine guessed, taking a sip of their tea.
“Vaguely,” The human admitted, opening another cabinet door. “I know you’re--er, were, the head of the Bard Coven. I know Eda mentioned some group called the BATs you lead. I know that...Eda knows you.” She said, voice becoming more mumbly as she spoke.
“Ah, Eda didn’t speak of me much, then?” Raine inquired, telling themself that they shouldn't really be surprised.
“Not until you, uh, had the whole...thing happening.” The girl nodded. “Then Eda got really worried and me and King asked why she was so worked up, and then she told us you were an old friend, which I maybe halfway trust, and that you had this group with the BATs...and I still don’t think I understand it completely.” She admitted with a sheepish look.
“Sounds like Eda.” Raine chuckled, shaking their head slightly as they smiled down at their tea. “Wait, halfway trust?” They added right after, back straightening.
“I mean, I trust you mean a lot to Eda,” The human said, her raiding of the cabinets forgotten. “And I trust Eda means a lot to you,” Raine did not flush at that, thank you. “But pretty much everyone Eda knows she has a very complicated relationship with, and I’d be surprised if you were the one exception.”
“Ah,” Raine said, rubbing the back of their neck. Is this what it felt like to be interrogated by a kid? “You got me there. We haven’t...seen each other in a while.” They admitted.
“How long?” The human asked, interest sparking in her eyes as she leaned next to the cabinets.
“Erm, two...maybe two and half decades?” Raine said, lifting a hand and tilting it. “Titan, it sounds much longer than it feels when I say it out loud.” They murmured.
“Oooh, another piece of the mysterious backstory!” The human grinned, perking up, all the hesitation from earlier melting away at a probably concerning speed. “Why’d ya stop talking?”
“Ah, well, you know,” Raine said, flushing again as their ears pressed back. “Just...a split, really. Seeing other people. Eda had some things she still needed to work out, and I suppose I had to reflect a bit, too.” They mumbled.
“Wait,” The girl narrowed her eyes, and when Raine focused on where she was again, they pulled back when they realized Luz was on the other side of the counter. “Are you one of her exes?” She gasped, eyes wide.
“Oh dear,” Raine sighed, face falling in their hands.
“You are!” The girl exclaimed, and they sincerely hoped it didn’t wake anyone else up. “Man, and I thought all her exes hated her from how she talked about some of them.” She whistled. “Explains a bit, though.”
“Is that so?” Raine mumbled, knowing that they were blushing up to their ears.
“Yeah, I mean, explains why she seemed so freaked out. She's gotta know you pretty well.” The human said casually. “She goes all out when she gets attached, as I’m sure you know.” She added with a light tease.
“Oh, I know.” Raine sighed, memories of holding back a feral Eda back in Hexside from mauling Odalia still vivid in their mind. “And, since we’re talking, I apologize, but,” They said, raising their head from their hands when they were sure they didn’t look like they’d had a nasty sunburn across their face. “I don’t believe I...caught your name.”
“Eda didn’t mention it?” The human blinked, graciously taking the change in conversation.
“She might’ve, but I’ll be honest, I caught maybe two of every five words she said.” Raine admitted, flicking an ear. “I’m sorry, but I figure I should ask now before it turns into something where I ask at a much worse moment.”
“Ah, don’t worry about it,” The human waved her hand. “You went through a lot. My name’s Luz.” She said cheerfully, offering a hand. “The other little guy is King.”
Raine blinked at it for a moment before reaching out and taking it, giving a single shake until Luz pulled back. She was practically rocking on her heels from how excited she seemed, and Raine may have allowed a small half-smile in return.
“Have you lived with Eda long?” Raine asked, because they could still remember Eda’s pained explanation that the kids weren’t hers hers, and found themself wondering where in the world she had picked up a human.
“Few months,” Luz said. “Four, maybe? I dunno, the calendars here are different from the human realm.”
“Four months?” Raine blinked, surprised. “I would’ve thought you’d known her longer.”
“Nah, I’m just a recent addition.” Luz shrugged, looking away with a hint of nervousness. “King’s been here for years, though.”
“Huh, odd.” Raine said with a shrug as they went back to drinking their tea. “You act a lot like her, I would’ve thought you’d have picked up those habits from her.”
“I do?” Luz repeated, straightening.
“Yes?” Raine lowered their cup. “When she was younger, at least. Very curious, couldn’t leave any questions unanswered. And stubborn. And maybe a little too attentive for her own good.” They added with a lighthearted tone.
“Oh, yeah, that-that sounds familiar.” Luz coughed into her fist, and Raine smiled at her embarrassment. “You knew her when you were younger, then?” She asked, and Raine chose not to comment on the slight diversion in conversation.
“Since Hexside,” Raine nodded. “I want to say we were eleven or so? Maybe twelve. Never had a moment of peace since.”
“Aw, Eda’s backstory just keeps getting more and more convoluted. At least yours isn’t as crazy as Lilith or her moms. Even after the whole mind-control thing.” Luz said with a fiery curiosity in her eyes, and Raine was impressed at their lack of visible reaction to how casually Luz brought up the mind-control. Another thing like Eda, Raine thought. No amount of answers would be satisfactory, and treated every odd thing like it was just another day.
“Well, I’m glad I got her daughter's approval. Wouldn’t want to fight my way in now, would I?” Raine chuckled, tilting their cup back and finishing the last of it.
When they lowered their cup again, Luz was staring at them like a spooked rabbit, hands gripping the counter. They blinked slowly, brow raised in confusion.
“I-I’m not,” Luz stuttered, coughing to clear her throat and forcibly releasing the counter. “I’m not her daughter, you thought I was her daughter?”
“You aren’t?” Raine frowned, ears perking up. “But you said you were her kid.”
“That’s--I thought you meant--like when Eda just casually calls me and and King kids, or when I’m out with my friends and she’s watching us we’re just ‘her kids,’ you know?” Luz said, looking a little frantic as she did so, wildly waving her hands around. “Not--no I’m not, related to her or anything--”
“Oh, I knew that.” Raine brushed it off. “But Eda told me you and King were her kids?”
“I--when did that happen?” Luz asked, near sounding like a demand.
Raine hesitated, for a brief moment. They doubted someone like Eda would so casually tell a teenager and young demon about that time she, you know, almost died, and it really wasn’t their place to tell them as such if she hadn’t.
“The last time we spoke.” They settled on. “Before the...thing.” They said, mimicking Luz’s words from earlier. “I learned she had kids, and I told her that if she had something to lose, she had to get back to them.”
“I...oh.” Luz said quietly, slowly relaxing and turning her head down to stare at the counter.
“I’m…” Raine hesitated. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep, I didn’t know it was a touchy subject--”
“No, no! It’s not, you’re fine.” Luz waved them off. “I just...didn’t know Eda had said it like that.”
Raine would’ve thought something along the lines of ‘Eda didn’t tell you she thought of you as her kid?’ if they didn’t know that Eda was the same person who hadn’t even truly thought of them as dating until Raine had introduced her as their girlfriend with earshot. She’d been so touched over the whole ordeal that Raine had to remind her, repeatedly, that they had been dating for over a month. Apparently knowing, and having a title for it, were two very different things.
They wouldn’t be surprised if this kid was the same.
“She cares about you, you know that, right?” Raine asked softly, and Luz looked up to meet their eyes.
“Yeah,” She said, cracking a small smile. “I know.”
Raine nodded in satisfaction, stepping around the counter to set their cup in the sink. It was late, they could wash it in the morning. How Eda could've ever thought about leaving a kid like her, they don't think they'd want to know.
“She cares about you, too.”
Raine paused, going still as one hand lightly gripped the edge of the sink.
“I know,” They said, almost surprised that they believed it so easily, inhaling as they set their shoulders back. “It’s almost scary how little that seems to have changed.” They mumbled.
“For the both of you, huh?” Luz teased.
Raine whirled around, ears pressed back as their face lit up again, being greeted with the girl's smug face that she had to have picked up from Eda, it was almost uncanny.
“I--you--she just--there was--shouldn’t you be asleep at this hour?” Raine managed to strangle out, getting a gleeful giggle out of Luz as they did so.
“I got hungry,” Luz shrugged simply, her smug expression never falling.
“Then grab a snack and go to bed.” Raine huffed, crossing their arms, as if that would hide the embarrassment as they stepped aside.
“I will, once I find where Eda put the cookies. She keeps hiding them from King and doesn’t tell me where she put them.” Luz muttered, stepping up to the cabinets again and opening a new one.
“I think that means she’s hiding them from both of you.” Raine raised a brow.
“She should find better hiding spots, then.” Luz said, retracting a hand from the cabinet with a container full of cookies in her hand, shaking them. “Cover for me if she asks why some went missing?” She asked, a pleading look on her face.
“I’ll cover you if one goes missing.” Raine bargained, and Luz gave them a disgruntled look before sighing and taking a single cookie from the container.
“Can’t believe you.” Luz huffed good-naturedly, putting the cookies away.
“Just because you're Eda’s kid doesn’t mean I’m going to let you get away with everything, Titan knows how Eda would’ve ended up if that happened.” They muttered, shaking their head. “I fear the day you and Amber meet.”
“Who?” Luz tilted her head, taking a large bite of her cookie.
“One of my crew, she’s about your age.” Raine said simply. “I think you’ll get along. Now go, shoo, I’m willing to bet tomorrow will be quite hectic, and you need your sleep.” They said, herding Luz out of the kitchen.
“I’m going, I’m going!” Luz said, smiling as she lightly batted at Raine’s hands, darting out of the kitchen. “Remember, you saw nothing.” She warned, walking backwards as she narrowed her eyes on Raine.
“Lips are sealed, I was fast asleep the whole night.” Raine said, leaning against the doorway to the kitchen. “Though I figure she’ll find out, anyway.”
“Yeah, but I’ve got backup now.” Luz said, shoving the last half of the cookie in her mouth before slipping away through the doorway that led to the staircase.
Raine chuckled, shaking their head as they pushed themself off of the doorway. They should probably hit the couch again, too. Eda would only fret more if they were falling asleep all day tomorrow.
“Oh, almost forgot!” Luz said, head suddenly poking through the doorway and causing Raine to pause. “Welcome to the Owl House,” She said cheerily. “Since I take it you’ll be staying a while.”
Raine’s ears flicked back and they mumbled under their breath as Luz’s smile only widened, and Raine couldn’t help but mirror it.
“Night!” She chirped, vanishing around the corner yet again.
Raine watched the place where she’d vanished again, rubbing their wrist and noting it didn’t ache as much as before.
“Goodnight,” They said to the empty air.

What I Thought About "Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" from The Owl House
Wow. They are really pushing it for that secret message, huh?
Anywho--Salutations, random people on the internet who certainly won’t read this! I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons!
I think it goes without saying at this point that Season Two of The Owl House is setting itself up as a season without filler. Now, filler episodes aren't always bad. Yes, it hurts when a series turns away from the main plot for a week. But at best, they're utilized as a chance for the writers to play around with the characters and developing said characters without it relating to the overarching story. So, some people who see that consider it a bad thing that a series doesn't have that many filler episodes.
I like to call those people: F**king morons.
Don't get me wrong, I see where some of you are coming from. And I'd be willing to agree...if The Owl House was a plot-driven series. Which it's not. It is a character-driven series. Because for every plot thread and narrative that the show presents, they always relate to the characters and develop them further each time these threads get brought up. For example, look at "Knock Knock Knockin’ on Hooty's Door" (It pains me just to write that). Several narratives move forward, and it’s all done to make the characters grow. And to explain how requires going into spoilers. So keep that in mind as you continue reading.
Now, let's review, shall we?
WHAT I LIKED
Hooty: Might as well start with the character that this episode is about.
To tell you the truth, I wasn't a huge fan when I found out we're getting a Hooty-centered episode. I've grown to love him over time, but he is a comedic character that's best used in small doses. Primarily due to how his voice is grating to me (My ears are still bleeding...). With that said, I do really love his contributions in "Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" (Seriously, there couldn't have been a less awkward title?). Hooty's antics when trying to help everyone are as hilarious as they are heartwarming. He deeply cares for his friends but just doesn't understand how his plans could do some unintended harm, which is pretty lovable if you ask me. We also get some surprisingly great insight into his character, as he feels insecure about basically being the comic relief who doesn't really do that much other than being funny. Rarely do you get that level of dimension from a comedic character, and it's even more uncommon for that to work out as well as it does here. It once again proves just how competent the writing is in this series to the point where we get an episode about Hooty, and it's funny and heartwarming instead of being annoying. And whoever is responsible for that, you're the best.
Lilith’s Letter to Hooty: I mean it when I say that I love how Lilith kept her word about her and Hooty becoming penpals. Their friendship was something I would have never expected to love, and I'm still shocked that it works so well, so seeing it continue like this just warms me to the bone. Plus, it is pretty sweet that Lilith's kind words are what inspired Hooty to do what he's done in this episode...meaning it's Lilith we should thank here--SON OF A WITCH! Even when she's gone, she's still working her way into my heart!
King going through Puberty: What?! KING IS EVOLVING!
(There, I made a Pokemon reference. Do I get my cookie now?)
Eda Keeping Herself Awake to Train Herself: I'm willing to bet a large sum of money that this has everything to with Raine getting captured last week. If Eda was still the most powerful witch in the Isles, she might have actually saved them. But she isn't, and now the love of her life is in the clutches of a tyrant planning something that could potentially be the end of everything. So I can understand Eda pushing herself to her limit to get back on top again, as I would probably do the same. It's not healthy in any way, and Eda would be doing more harm than good. But when it comes to the people you love, logic doesn't always win out in the end.
Luz Wanting to Make her Way into Amity’s Heart by Making the Echo Mouse Happy: ...That's it. I Just...I just love everything about it, ok?
This was also when I knew that I was wrong to doubt that there would be zero Lumity in this episode. I realize my follies now, and I humbly apologize.
Hooty Teaching King About Demons: This was so funny. So, so funny. Probably doesn't come as a surprise, especially since The Owl House proves itself as a comedy before, but the jokes have never hit as frequently and as hard as they did here. From Hooty getting offended by King's dance to him and Dana's insert wanting a "DNA sample," everything managed to successfully make me lose my s**t. It does come at the expense of King suffering, but I can stomach that much more than if it were Eda or Luz. And, as a bonus, we get lore about how demons work, added with another great joke of King getting in trouble with Hooty for saying he already knows this stuff. Humor isn't always the show's strong suit, but when it works, it f**king works.
King Wanting to Know What he Is: But despite how funny King's vignette was, we still get to see more of his character grow. We learn that he's frustrated now that there's this big question mark over his life now, feeling extra angry that his father "abandoned" him to leave such a present mystery. It shows the hidden resentment he has that Lilith inadvertently brought out, made even worse when King's father hasn't responded to the video yet. King hasn't really gotten that much development until "Echoes of the Past," so it's pretty cool that the writers haven't really slowed down on it. Especially when it leads to these great moments of King venting his frustrations.
King’s Shouting Powers: KING learned FUS RO DAH!
(And now that's a Pokemon reference AND a Skyrim reference. WHERE'S MY GOSH DANG COOKIE!?)
Eda’s Nightmare: If King's vignette hits you hard with the laughs, Eda's will absolutely hit you harder with the feels (never make me say "feels" unironically again). Knowing that Eda's life got thoroughly screwed over by the curse is something we could figure out on her own. But seeing just how much the curse ruined her life and tore apart relationships that mean the world to her really does a swell job at ripping apart the soul. What's even more tragic is, technically speaking, it's all sort of Eda's fault too. She kept hiding the curse, refusing to be a burden to others who would do all they could to help. If she had only been open and honest, things probably wouldn't have changed much, but they most likely would have been better than they are now.
Eda Attacked her Father as the Owl Beast: ...I don't know what I was expecting when "Keeping Up A-Fear-Ances" hinted that there was some possible tension between Eda and her father...but it definitely wasn't this.
The fact that we see blood where his eye used to be doesn't make things any happier, either.
Raine Broke Up with Eda: Before we get into anything else, let's celebrate the fact that it's now confirmed that Eda and Raine really did use to date in the past. Because this show is just f**king phenomenal with its LGBTQA+ representation!
But, seriously, this is a fantastic reveal that goes far beyond just shipping...well, sort of. It shines a new light on Eda and Raine's interactions from last week, revealing that while they're not a couple anymore, they still very much love each other. It helps make their last interaction especially tragic, as they were both on the same page now and could very well be together again. Only for them to be forced apart for the second time in a way that's much worse than the first. And I frickin' adore that this series changes the impact of one episode one week later. Again, it shows just how competent these writers are, and kudos to them for making something so...perfect.
The Moon Person: WHO THE FU--Nope. Nope! We have more than enough mystery bulls**t to deal with through CreepyLuz and Philip Wittebane, so I am PUTTING YOU ON THE BACKBURNER FOR NOW!
(They're probably nothing more than a one-off character, anyway)
The Owl Beast and Eda are Connected: Through visuals alone, we, the audience, can clue into what the curse really means. The Owl Beast doesn't want to be a part of Eda as much as she doesn't want it to be a part of her. Whether they like it or not, and they very much don't, they're stuck together. The thing is, and this is what I love the most, they still decide to make the best of their situation rather than let it ruin their lives even more. This might be the best possible turn Eda's curse could have made. It'll still affect her, and there are probably more negatives than positives, but at least now, it's not the worst thing in the world. And I feel like that's all anyone can ask when in a position like her own.
Eda's “Pretty Dream”: I don't know what emotions are toiling inside me more with this moment. Awe and wonder over how beautiful Eda's dream is, or heartbreak over the implication that she has only had nightmares since getting cursed...I'm gonna say both. Yeah, it's definitely both.
Eda’s Harpie Form: Well, fan artists are gonna have a field day with this...especially the freaks.
(You know who you are. And you're weird!)
Luz Calling Amity a “Cotton-Candy Haired Goddess”: ...Have I ever mentioned how much I love this show?
Hooty Kidnapped Amity: ...Hooty, if your stupidity wasn't charming, I would be more than willing to call the authorities over how you kidnapped a girl in your version of a knapsack and locked her in the basement. For that is going to ring SO MANY alarm bells in people's heads.
Amity and Luz Stuck in a Tunnel of Love: *Smacks lips* Mmm. The adorable awkwardness of this moment is just *chef's kiss* magnifique!
Luz being afraid of getting made fun of:
Amity’s look of hope: I mean...just...f**king--LOOK AT HER:
Tumblr media
That is the look of a girl who, while embarrassed as hell, still is ecstatic to learn for a brief moment, everything that she is hoping for has a high chance of being real. Who, in their right mind, wouldn't go "Aw!" at something so pure and innocent?!
Luz Destroying the Tunnel of Love: This is how to effectively utilize dramatic irony. The audience can understand why Luz is tearing the place apart because she explicitly states that she's afraid of Amity rejecting her in the end. They also know that's bogus, thus making it extra painful to watch Amity's heart break more and more with each second (which is perfectly represented through Amity's expressions). You feel bad for both of them, and even worse when you know that it can easily be prevented by the simple art of communication. That's what makes it great dramatic irony. Knowing the point of view of each character results in a scene that evokes emotions in two different ways.
Hooty’s Breakdown: This was...genuinely hard to watch. Not that it was badly written, far from it. It just...hurt seeing how destroyed Hooty was when he realized he failed the people he has such an admiration for. On the upside, a wholesome moment follows soon after as the Owl House gang tries to reassure Hooty that he's done a lot of good that night. It's a pure action that shows even though Hooty gets on their nerves all the time, they still care about him...damn it. I think I'm gonna cry.
Eda’s Advice for Luz: ...Eda...You're the best.
You found out that your surrogate daughter wants to ask a girl out, and not only were you quick to deliver the best possible advice ("Just go for it!"), but you also quickly reassure her that it doesn't need to be perfect.
And you know what? That's it. Eda is the best cartoon mom! She might not technically be Luz's mom, but I don't give a s**t because she is the best!
Luz and Amity Ask Each Other Out: Shh-sh-sh-sh...
Do you hear that?
...
...
...It's the sound of dozens of Lumity fans collectively losing their s**t...and I'm one of them.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
HOO-HOO-HOO-HOO!
IT!
IS!
CANON!
AH-HAHAHAHAHA!
HOLY S**T! Holy s**t! Holy s**t...might just be the best way I could possibly describe this! Finally, after all the waiting, speculating, and praying, THESE TWO IDIOTS FINALLY GOT TOGETHER! AND IT WAS PERFECT! I mean, it was awkward as s**t, but that's what makes it perfect! You know why? You wanna--Hey! *snaps fingers*. You want to know why? It's because they're teenagers. Of f**king course, it's going to be awkward! This is their first relationship, so there will be a lot of missteps along the way. And that, in itself, brings me to the best (second best part?) thing about it happening in episode eight of the new seasons. Most endgame couples get together in the climax or even at the end of the series. But to have them get together this early on, means there will be quite a few episodes dedicated to showing them grow as a couple.
And better than that--EVEN F**KING BETTER THAN THAT--dozens of kids are going to see these two, a realistic depiction of young love that just so happens to involve two girls, and are going to learn once and for all that there is nothing wrong with being who they are. That fact alone is f**king incredible. Yes, it sucks that season three got cut short, and we'll have even less time with Luz and Amity, but knowing how many kids have felt seen today almost makes it worth it in the end.
And if I see one mother f**ker saying this was poorly paced, I might just hunt them down for SPORT...Sorry if that was an overreaction. I'M JUST SO HAPPY! Because they're happy! Look at them. Listen to them! It's so...GAH-HAHAHA!
“They’re adorable! And deserve all the happiness!”: You're darn right, Hooty! You're darn right.
King’s Father(?) Shows Up: What the--WHAT?! They're doing this now?! Here?! After everything else?
Oh, man. What could this mean? What dynamic changes will this cause in the main cast? How could the writers fit this in during the next two episodes? And what--
Hooty Eats the Letter: ...Pfffft--HAHAHAHA!
Oh, man...I should be mad, and I wouldn't blame others if they are...but that is too much of a brilliant f**k you that I can't help but appreciate it. Bravo writers. Bravo.
WHAT I DISLIKED
...Dislikes? Dislikes? You would honestly believe that after everything I witnessed in this episode, that I would have the gull to list anything wrong with it?!
HOW DARE YOU ASSUME THAT I WOULD BE SO CALLUS TO--Actually, I do kind of have an issue with the episode's title. It's just too much of an awkward mouthful for me to get behind. I understand that the writers wanted to sneak the K into the secret message, but were there really no other titles starting with K that they couldn't come up with?
But that's just a personal issue, and in no way do I think anybody else would feel the same way. Especially with how well-written everything else is anyway.
IN CONCLUSION
"Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door" (title aside) is another A+ episode. It was hilarious, heart-wrenching, and downright adorable while keeping me entertained with every minute. I'm sure there are some issues I was willing to ignore due to how expertly written everything else was, but why bother looking for the chinks in the armor when I could just enjoy a perfect episode for being so...perfect! Some of you might be willing to disagree with me, but to that, I say: Don't knock it till you've tried it.
(Now, if you don't excuse me, I'm going to go lie down. It's...It's been a day.)

Title: A Rose Has Thorns
Rating: G
Series: The Owl House
Characters/Pairings: Hunter/Willow
Summary: It was Hunter's first solo mission since he left the Emperor's Coven and moved into the Owl House. All he had to achieve was purchase a few items at the market. That should be simple, right?
Archive of Our Own
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” Luz asked.
Hunter sighed as he held up the list, swinging the basket over his shoulder. “I can handle a shopping trip, Luz.”
“Yeah, but I'm pretty sure you’re not exactly used to things like shopping,” Luz retorted. “I mean, from what Lilith said about the Emperor's Coven...”
Hunter couldn’t deny that. Most of the domestic chores in the Emperor’s Coven were handled by servants or abominations. Hunter had never even done his own laundry until he found himself living at the Owl House.
That had been an interesting lesson. Eda claimed Hunter had done well, but Hunter had a hunch that setting clothes on fire was not as common as Eda claimed.
Hunter sighed as his cardinal flew to his shoulder. “Look, I’ll be fine. I have my palisman with me and I have actually bought things before.”
Luz chewed her lower lip. “Yeah, but-”
Eda placed a hand on Luz’s shoulder. “Let him go, kiddo. If Hunter wants to do this solo we've gotta respect that.”
“Besides, it’s not like he could do any worse than you did,” King called out from the couch. “He just has to avoid trusting any wizards.”
Hunter raised an eyebrow. “Why would I trust a wizard? They’re famous for being shady-”
“Oh, wow, would you look at the time,” Luz said nervously as she pointed over her shoulder. “I have to, uh, go get ready for my date with Amity! See you later, Hunter! Byyyyyye!”
Luz hastily dashed out of the room. Hunter turned to Eda.
“Do I... want to know?” he asked.
“Meh, I'll fill you in on the blackmail later,” Eda said as she crossed her arms. “Seriously, kid, you sure you don’t want to at least take King with you?”
Hunter rolled his eyes. “For the last time, I’ll be fine. I’ll be back within the hour.”
-----------------------------------------
Two hours later, Hunter couldn't suppress the twitch in his eyelid. He had finally managed to find almost every item on the list... except for formian crystal. He was almost tempted to just return empty-handed, but he knew the house needed it for their crystal ball - whatever his opinions on King's shows.
Besides, it was a matter of pride at this point. After his declarations, how could he prove to Luz and Eda that he could be useful and handle things like a normal person if he didn't return with every item on the list?
Unacceptable.
His cardinal gave a comforting tweet. It had tried to give him some suggestions, but hadn’t been in the market place for a long time. So in spite of intentions, the little palisman knew even less than Hunter.
Hunter patted the cardinal’s head as he glanced around the various shoppers passing by. There were many less people around at this time of day which admittedly is why he had come alone. There was a much lower risk of one of the Emperor Coven guards spotting and arresting him on the spot.
Still, Hunter wasn’t thrilled with the idea of asking someone for help. What if they recognized him and reported him? Maybe if he picked the right shopkeeper- Wait. Not far from him were a couple of girls close to his age.
Chances of them turning me in is lower, Hunter thought and walked over. At least if they're anywhere near as anti-authority as the human. I’ll ask them.
The two girls were laughing over some joke, but stopped abruptly as they noticed Hunter approaching.
“Hey, can I ask you two a quick question?” he asked.
The girl with pink hair and three eyes looked at him and smirked. “If you mean where to get a better fashion sense, that is not going to be a 'quick' answer.  Where do we even begin?”
“Uh no,” Hunter said with a raised eyebrow. “I just wanted to know where I could find someone selling formian crystal.”
The other girl tapped her chin in thought. “Um. That's for old crystal balls, right?  I think there’s a booth over in the east-”
“West side,” the pink haired girl jumped in with a grin. “She means there’s a seller on the far west side of the market.” She turned to her friend. “Right, Skara?”
The girl named Skara blinked, but then nodded rapidly. “Oh..uh, yeah, like Boscha said.” She gave a shaky smile and pointed. “To the far, far west side.  Nearly...outside the market?”
“West side, okay,” Hunter said as he started walking in that direction. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” the girl named Boscha said with a smirk.
Hunter found her a bit odd, but he was too worn out from shopping to worry about it.
“Last item.  Last item!  I can do this.  I just need to get this done so we can head home,” he said aloud to his cardinal.
Another hour later, Hunter had been up and down the west side of the market three times but he still hadn’t found any formian crystal.
“Where is it,” he grumbled as his cardinal hovered nearby. “It’s supposed to be here!”
The cardinal tweeted in his ear.
“No, I will not just go home,” Hunter said as they continued to walk. “I can't fail my mission, and it isn't complete until I find-”
Suddenly, he walked straight into someone's back. The pair of them let out a grunt as each, separately, stumbled and fell to the ground.
Hunter quickly forgot about his annoyance as he scrambled to his feet. “Sorry, are you okay?”
The person he had bumped into was another girl. She waved off his concern as she adjusted her glasses and dusted the dirt off her clothes.
“Don’t worry,” she said with a small smile. “A little dirt never hurt anyone.”
A bee palisman carrying a small basket hovered nearby and the girl gave it a pat on the head. “I’m okay, Clover - oh dear.”
Hunter looked down and saw what she had noticed. The items from his basket had fallen out when he had crashed into her.
“Great,” Hunter grumbled as he knelt down and started picking them up. “Just what I needed.”
He started gathering up and inspecting the items for damage, engrossed in his task until a jar of toad jam was suddenly thrust in his face. He hadn’t realized the girl was kneeling next to him and was helping to gather everything
Hunter blushed. “Uh, thanks,” he replied. Why didn’t I see that?
“You're welcome,” the girl replied, still smiling. “Do you need help with anything else?”
Hunter sighed. “Actually, yes,” he said as he rose. “Can you tell me where I can get some formian crystal?”
The girl raised an eyebrow. “Formian crystal?  Here?”
“Yes.  The vendor that’s supposed to be stationed in this area.”
The girl frowned. “Um..last time I checked, no one in this part of the market has ever sold anything like that.  This is the area for fertilizers, cloth dyes, and any of the really pungent produce.”
“What?!” Hunter cried. “But that Boscha girl said there was a stall here for it.”
The girl’s eyes widened, then narrowed as she held a tight frown. “Wait, Boscha? Three eyed girl with pink hair? She told you to come here?”
Hunter didn’t like where this was going. “Uh, yes. I’ve been searching for over an hour.”
The girl sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose. “Boscha, honestly…” She shook her head. “I kind of hate to tell you this, but she lied.”
“What?” Hunter growled. “Why would she do that?”
Was it all a trap? Was she working with the Emperor’s Coven-
“Because she’s a mega jerk and probably thought sending you to the 'smelly' end of the market would be funny,” the girl replied firmly, crossing her arms over her chest. “She has a twisted sense of humor.” She pointed to herself. “Personal experience.”
“Oh,” Hunter mumbled. “That kind of makes sense.”
He glanced over the list. Maybe he should just head back now. He had wasted enough time as is and there would be...concerns if he wasn’t back soon.
The girl gave a small smile and pointed. “Come on, I’ll take you there.”
Hunter blinked. “Um..take me where?”
“To where you can get some formian crystal.”
Hunter frowned and tilted his head. “You will? But... why?”
“Because I want to,” the girl replied. “Besides, I was heading in that direction anyway.”
Hunter paused. Should he trust her? What if this was another trick? But without her intelligence, he had no way to avoid failing his objective.
“Are you coming?” the girl asked with a concerned frown.
Hunter shook his head. “Yes, sorry.  I was just lost in thought.”
The girl smiled back. “I’m Willow by the way.”
“Hunter,” he replied, frowning to himself. Willow? That name sounds familiar. Wonder why?
He tossed the thought aside and quickly caught up with her.
True to Willow’s word, she took her directly to a stall selling assorted magical crystals, including what he was looking for. She even helped him bargain to get it a few snails cheaper.
Hunter tucked the small bag carefully in the basket.
“Thanks,” he said.
“No problem,” Willow replied with a smile. “I know what it’s like dealing with a bully far too well.”
So, do I, but on a different scale, Hunter thought as his mind drifted back to the Emperor’s Coven.
His cardinal tweeted and Hunter patted his head. “I have to get home, but thanks again for the help.”
“Sure thing,” Willow said as she began to walk in the other direction, the bee buzzing busily beside her. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”
“Yeah, maybe,” Hunter said with a wave.
As he walked home. The girl’s name bugged him. Willow...Willow...I know I've heard that name somewhere, but where?
Hunter got his answer exactly two days later.
Luz had invited two of her friends over for a 'study session'. Amity had apparently been dragged off into ‘bonding sibling time’ with her brother and sister, which was admittedly a bit of a relief for Hunter. She was still suspicious of him over that whole Eclipse Lake business.
Gus was the first to arrive. He seemed wary of Hunter, but was mostly friendly.
“If Luz says you’re okay, then I’m willing to trust her opinion,” Gus said. “She’s a pretty good judge of character.  Besides, it's hard to pull the wool over an illusionist's eyes!”
Hunter couldn’t help but agree with him.  Or at least his opinion of Luz.
They chatted for a bit before Luz’s other friend arrived. Hearing a new, and yet somewhat familiar voice, Hunter raised his head and froze.
It was the same girl who had helped him at the market. It was only then his brain connected the dots.
Willow, as in Luz’s friend Willow who she talks about all the time, Hunter thought with a gulp. Cursing his poor memory, he stood up.
“And this is Hunter,” Luz said as she pointed to Hunter. “Also formerly known as - wait for it - the Golden Guard.”
Willow gave a shaky smile, but it vanished as she spotted Hunter. The basket slipped from her fingers, kept up only by her bee palisman's efforts.
Hunter coughed as he gave a sheepish wave. “Um...hi?”
He could feel everyone’s eyes on them as the silence between the two of them continued.
She’s probably just as surprised as I am, Hunter thought.
Luz got in between them and frowned. “Something wrong?”
Hunter rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh...we've met before. Actually."
Luz tilted her head as Gus grasped his chin in thought, muttering under his breath.
“You have? When?” Luz asked.
“Uhh…” Hunter stammered as he struggled to find an explanation that wouldn’t have Luz fretting over him.
“In my dads’ shop,” Willow chimed in quickly, fending off King's attempt to climb her and peer into her basket.
Hunter blinked. “The shop?”
Willow gave him a look and suddenly he understood.
“Rrriigghhhttt,” Hunter said slowly and gave a shaky smile. “I was just curious so I popped in for a quick look.”
“Yeah, and we had a nice little chat,” Willow added.
“Oh,” Luz said as she placed an arm around Hunter’s shoulder. “Man, the Boiling Isles.  Small world, am I right?”
“Suspiciously small,” Gus commented, tapping the spine of a book.
“Who cares,” King said as he pointed at Willow. “The important thing is that I’m smelling tasty yum-yums that should be in my tum-tum, but they're still in that basket.  You have brought tribute to your monarch, and it must be delivered!”
Willow smiled. “You're right!” she glanced at Luz. “It’s snaggle bread but my dads left out the fairy wings so Luz can enjoy it.”
“Aw, that was nice of them,” Luz said as she moved to take the basket. “How about I get some plates?”
“I can do it, I know where they are,” Willow offered as she headed into the kitchen.
“Okay,” Luz said. “There should be some toad jam in the cupboard too!  Fresh from the market!”
Hunter glanced behind as his cardinal landed on his shoulder.
“Um..I’ll go make us some tea,” Hunter offered as he pointed. “Be right back.”
He ignored their baffled expressions as he ventured into the kitchen. Willow didn’t turn around. Hunter hesitated, considering talking to her, but finally just moved towards the kettle in silence, turning on the tap.
More silence followed until Hunter turned off the tap and placed the full kettle onto the stove.
The clearing of a throat caused Hunter to look up. Willow had finished arranging slices of bread on a plate with the jar of jam, and was rifling through the butter knives.
“Ssssooo,” Willow began as her bee fetched teacups from the pantry, “I’m assuming you didn’t want Luz to hear how we actually met?”
Hunter covered his face with one hand. “Yes, please,” he groaned. “If she found out how my first shopping trip went, she would never let me live it down.”
Willow’s face softened. “Luz isn’t like that,” she admonished as her bee palisman landed on her shoulder. “But I get how being tricked by Boscha can be kind of embarrassing, so I’ll respect your pride.”
Hunter sighed. “Thanks, I appreciate that.”
Willow crossed her arms. “However, there is something else I want to make clear.” Her eyes narrowed. “Amity and I do talk about things, after all."
Hunter sighed. He’d been expecting this. “All right, let me have...it?”
Suddenly, Willow was holding one of the knives and was stomping forward. Hunter barely had time to react before he found himself pinned against the wall. His cardinal gave a concerned tweet, but the bee was buzzing angrily nearby and it stayed where it was on the counter.
Hunter could theoretically get out of this. Probably. Maybe. Willow was shorter than him and he had more training, but she had a weapon and he didn't - not to mention the sheer determination shining in her eyes.
“Luz is a very dear friend to me, and I care a lot about King, Eda and Hooty,” Willow stated firmly as she held the butter knife unwaveringly. “Now.  I do believe in second chances.  That's why Amity and I are friends again.”
“Under...stood,” Hunter said slowly, wondering how a simple butter knife could be more threatening than Kikimora's clawed monsters.
“I do, however, wish to inform you that Luz is friends with a plant witch.  Plant witches know about plants.  Including which ones are very toxic,” Willow pulled his shirt collar close until both of their noses were touching. “If you betray Luz, or Gus, or Amity or anyone in this house you'll get first-hand knowledge of dragon fly blossoms.”
“The... burning, stinging kind?” Hunter guessed.
“The same,” Willow said as her bee gave another buzz. “Do we have an understanding?”
“Clear as formian crystal,” Hunter replied as he held up his hands.
Willow’s smile returned. She slipped the butter knife up her sleeve and her bee suddenly became much calmer.
“Good,” she said and took a deep breath as she steadied herself. “Oh boy, that took a lot out of me.”
Hunter wasn’t sure how to reply, but was thankfully saved by King’s voice.
“Where are those snacks?!” he cried. “Your tiny tyrant is getting hungry here!”
“Be right there,” Willow called as she gathered up the plates. “Coming?”
“In a minute.  I, um.  Need to wait for the water to boil to make tea,” Hunter added quickly.
Willow smiled, nodded and left the kitchen.
Hunter took deep breaths until he heard the kettle boil, removed it from the stove and started pouring it over the teabags. As he was putting the lid on the teapot Hooty extended his head into the kitchen window.
“Wooow, that was intense,” Hooty commented.
“No kidding,” Hunter commented as his cardinal landed on his shoulder and then paused. “Wait, you saw the whole thing?”
“I see everything in this house,” Hooty replied cheerfully.  "Eeeeeverythiiiiing."
“And you didn’t do anything?  Say anything?!” Hunter asked.
“Willow wouldn’t have hurt you unless she had to,” Hooty replied as he smiled. “She’s a lovely lady who's as sweet as a dragon fly blossom.”
Hunter kind of understood. Helping out during his first shopping trip proved what kind of person she was. And yet, there was that look in her eyes. Willow, for all her sweetness, was clearly also a person who was willing to protect those around her.  Whatever the cost.
Even A Rose Has Thorns, Hunter thought.
It was a line from one of Belos’s old books. Hunter never quite understood the significance. Of course roses had thorns. It was just how they were.
He looked to where Willow had stood. Now he felt like he understood the full significance.
“She’s very admirable,” Hunter muttered, andis cardinal tweeted in agreement.
He glanced at Hooty and saw the house demon was smirking at him.
“What?” he asked.
“You liiiiike her,” Hooty sang as he wiggled about.
Hunter blushed. “What? Well...Yes, I mean I hope to be her friend.”
“Oh, old Hooty has been around all the blocks!  This is clearly the beginning of a slow-burning subconscious unrequited crush,” Hooty replied in a sly tone.  "That is, for noooooow~"
Hunter waved his hands in the air. “What makes you think that?!”
“Oh, I don't knooooow," Hooty smirked.  "Why are you blushing?”
The words died in Hunter’s mouth as he fumbled with the kettle, putting it aside and sweeping the teapot onto a tray.
“I’m leaving now,” he declared.
“Feel free to ask me for advice,” Hooty called to his retreating back. “I’m knowledgeable in all the glorious and sinister ways of the heart! Just look at how I helped Lumity set sail!  Literally!”
Hunter vowed he would never ask as he left the kitchen.  And did his best to ignore the tweeting of the cardinal on his shoulder.

Fortunes of Love Pt 1 (Eda x OC)
Summary:
When King needs his most loyal soldier fixed, Eda decides to take them to an old acquaintance of hers to get it patched. What starts as a visit turns into another visit, then another, then another. Eda begins to wonder why they were never friends before.
Warnings: None
It was a surprisingly quiet afternoon. Luz was still at school, Hooty was taking a nap, and King was off somewhere playing. And Eda had every intention of taking advantage of the break in the chaos. She slumped onto the couch with a sigh, a steaming mug of tea in her hands. She took a sip of her drink, closing her eyes and relaxing, a lazy smile on her face. This was the stuff.
Eda’s peace was shattered when a screech rang out through the house. She sighed, putting her mug down on the coffee table. Looks like her tea would go cold. She crossed her arms, scowling at King as he dashed into the room, but her face softened when she saw him. He looked like he was on the verge of tears, his little stuffed rabbit clutched tightly in his arms.
“Eda!” he screeched, running into her legs and toppling over. He was quick to get back to his feet.
“I’m right here, King, you don’t need to screech.”
“Eda, Eda, The worst thing ever has happened!” He continued to screech, not bothering to lower his voice a bit. “Francoise’s been injured!”
He shoved the rabbit in her face, showing the arm hanging on by a thread, the stuffing spilling out.
“He needs immediate attention or I fear he’ll lose his life!” The little demon insisted, looking quite devastated at the turn of events. Eda sighed, a soft smile on her face.
“Alright, alright, let me see.”
She gently took the rabbit from him and took a closer look. The thread attaching the arm to the body was in pieces, bits poking out of the worn fabric. It had probably just gotten too old, played with too much, something like that. She wasn’t the best at sewing, but it looked easy enough to fix.
“Guess I can fix it. Just let me get some things.”
She handed the rabbit back to King and gave him a little pat on his head. She had a bunch of junk in the closet to look through.
It was tougher than she thought it would be just to find a needle and thread. Luz had returned from school before she had even found anything.
“Eda? What are you doing?”
The witch huffed from her pile of stuff, the shelves of the closet empty. She grumbled, wading through her pile and standing by Luz.
“Looking for a needle and thread. King broke his doll.” She said dismissively, idly drawing a circle in the air. All the junk on the floor jumped to attention and flew back to their spots. “Clearly, I didn’t find anything.”
“Awww, that’s why King looks so depressed.”
They looked back to the couch where King sat, still clutching his broken rabbit with big crocodile tears in his eyes. He sniffed.
“Yeah. We need to fix that thing.”
Eda went quiet as she thought, pacing the living room. Okay, maybe she couldn’t fix the damn thing herself. That meant she would have to find someone else to do it. She went through all the people she knew in her mind. Half of them hated her, so it was easy to cut the list down. None of the first people she thought of actually knew anything about sewing or stuffed animals. She had to dig deep before she remembered someone who might be able to help. It was a long shot, but they had to try.
“Alright you two, I have an idea.”
She turned to them with her signature cocky smile.
“We’re going to the market.”
--------------------------
The Market was busy this time of day, the witchlings who just got out of school running around through the crowd. Eda hated being at the market when it was like this, but desperate times they say. The market was large and there were many stalls, but only one of them was the one they needed. She wished she remembered where it was better. She had never actually been there before, she just passed it every once in a while. After several wrong turns and irritated mumbles, she finally spotted the familiar stall.
“Ah, here we are! Told ya I’d find it.”
She crossed her arms, a prideful smile on her face, but Luz and King looked doubtful.
“It looks like a … fortune-teller?” Luz said, cocking her head to one side.
And so it did. The dark blue stall was decorated with white glittering stars and a crystal ball sat on the counter alongside various other tools. A group of teenagers were clustered around it, giggling and squealing at each other.
“How is some palm reading supposed to help Francoise?” King shouted, looking irritated.
“Just come on, ya little demon. Trust me.”
King continued to grumble his doubts as the approached the stall. The group of teenagers dispersed as they approached, talking amongst each other and staring at their hands in wonder. As they left they could see the witch waving goodbye. She looked friendly enough, her black curls tied back and what looked like a snake hanging on her shoulders. She smiled at them as they approached, though she looked a bit hesitant when she saw Eda.
“Hello! How can I help you?” Her voice was small and quiet.
“There you are! What was it again? Nila or something?” Eda’s voice boomed in contrast to the other witch. She leaned against the counter, a hand on her hip.
“Niliana.”
Eda gave a dismissive wave.
“Whatever, close enough. Listen, Nily, we have a bit of a problem here and need your help.”
She nodded to King. He still looked doubtful, but jumped on the counter and showed the witch his rabbit. She focused on it instantly, brows furrowed as she inspected the damage, humming thoughtfully.
“You want me to fix it?”
Eda nodded.
“It’s desperate! We must heal Francoie immediately!” King shouted, waving his arms around. “I don’t want to lose my best buddy!”
The woman smiled at him, giving his head a few pats.
“He’ll be fine. I can fix him. Come on then, my supplies are in the back.”
She left her stall, leading them into a tent behind it. Luz gazed around it in wonder. It was dark, little balls of light floating around the ceiling giving all the light they needed to see. There shelves upon shelves of stuff surrounding them, crystal balls, crystals, various jars of herbs, and other mysterious substances. Even more dried herbs were hanging from the ceiling alongside various fabrics. In the middle of the room were several comfy looking chairs and a love seat surrounding a round coffee table with a few unlit candles.
“Take a seat, I’ll get working on this.” Niliana told them in her soft voice, motioning to the chairs. Luz hopped into a chair, giggling as she bounced slightly. Eda sat with a sigh, sprawling out over the love seat, but King couldn’t sit. He followed the witch, right on her heals as she walked to what looked like a work table. The shelf above it was lined with various stuffed animals in various rates of decay and mismanagement. King crawled onto the table, watching anxiously as she got to work. The snake on her shoulders slithered away due to some unspoken command, curling around a nearby staff and turning to wood.
“This is a nice place ya got here!” Luz said, still staring around in wonder. “I haven’t meant anyone who was really good at oracle magic before! Can you tell the future? How? What’s your favorite way to do it? What’s all the herbs and crystals for? How…?”
“Slow down, kid!” Eda said, laughing. “Not everyone can talk as fast as you.”
“Oh, right sorry.” Luz said, looking a bit sheepish and shrugging.
“No, dear, I can’t tell the future. Not exactly. Oracle magic is actually quite complicated. It’s more like I see pieces what could happen. I do it by connecting to others magic. I like reading tea leaves the most. The herbs are for the tea. The crystals can be used to focus someones magic so I can read it and use it to tell the future.”
She answered easily, not missing a beat as she worked. The rabbit was empty of all stuffing now, the broken thread removed and the arm sitting next to it. She got herself a bucket and filled it with water, adding an herb here and an herb there. Once the concoction was completed she put the pieces of the rabbit in to soak.
King stared into the bucket, then looked up at her, confused.
“What are you doing?” He asked, the nervousness creeping into his voice. She smiled at him again.
“He’s just taking a bath is all. It’ll make his fur soft and stronger.”
King nodded, keeping a close eye on the bucket.
“What do you mean you see pieces? What does that mean? And what does tea have to do with telling the future?”
Niliana sighed.
“Why don’t I just … show you? Would that appease you?”
Luz’s eyes went wide and she nodded, almost bouncing with excitement. So, she started putting together a pot of tea, heating the water with a magical floating fire. With nothing left to do but wait, she finally sat with a sigh, grabbing a deck of cards to fiddle with.
Luz never stopped talking, but once the witch had settled the girl went oddly silent. Niliana looked over to her to find the girl watching her with intent, curious eyes.
“Sooooo…” She started, a smirk on her face. “How do you and Eda know each otherrrrrrr.”
“We went to school together,” Eda spoke up before Niliana could, but she didn’t seem to mind. She just nodded.
“We were both in the potions track, at least for a short time.”
“Ugh, those classes were so booooring.” Eda groaned, slouching even further in the love seat at the very memory of them. “It was nothing but stirring and stirring. I don’t know how you managed it.”
“Clearly, I didn’t.” She said, twirling a card between her fingers. “I transferred to the oracle track shortly after you left.”
Eda snorted.
“I’m amazed anyone's making potions these days with a class like that.”
Niliana shrugged.
“I didn’t think it was all that bad. The monotony was calming, especially when I was having a bad day.”
Eda waved her hand aimlessly, clearly unimpressed.
“Awww, you guys were friends?” Luz asked, but Eda shook her head, confusing the girl.
“Not really. We were more like … Aquaintances. We knew of each other, but we didn’t hang out or anything.”
“We only really talked when we were paired up for a project.” Niliana added.
“Yeah, I remember that! I always got a passing grade with you watching my back!”
“You made me do all the work.”
“Not like I was learning anything anyway. I still did some of the stirring, didn’t I?”
“Mmmm, I suppose. Not much. You were too busy getting into trouble releasing spirits in the locker room or something.”
Eda snickered, remembering all her troublesome pranks.
“They never could get rid of those spirits. They made me do it!”
Niliana looked doubtful.
“And how exactly did they manage that?”
Eda just smiled, sitting up so she could ruffle Luz’s hair.
“I had to get Luz here into that school somehow.”
They spent a while retelling some of there adventures from school. Well, Eda retold some of her adventures. NIlly occasionally would add something here or that, mentioning something she herself remembered. Otherwise, she busied herself with other things. The tea needed to be finished and handed out and the rabbit needed dried off after soak and restuffed. The tent was filled with laughter. Even King was laughing at some points, though he kept his attention mostly on his rabbit.
“I finished my tea!” Luz piped up. “Do you read the leaves now?”
“In a bit, hun, let me just finish this real quick.”
King bounced anxiously, watching her carefully as pulled the needle through the fabric. Finally, the string was tied off and snipped.
“He’s done! Ya fixed him!” King shouted, eagerly grabbing for the rabbit, but the woman pulled it away.
“One last thing.” She said, opening one of her drawers to pull out a black ribbon. She tied it around the rabbit’s neck, forming a cute little bowtie. Only when that was done did she hand it to the little demon. He snatched it from her hands, giving it a big hug.
“Francoise! You’re all fixed!” He cheered. “Thank you, lady!”
He jumped off the counter, dashing over to Eda to show her his newly fixed rabbit. She whistled.
“Dang, it almost looks brand new! I knew you did this sort of stuff but I didn’t know you were good at it.”
Niliana shook her head.
“How did you even know? I don’t remember telling you about it.”
Eda shrugged, moving to the side so King could sit next to her, Francoise in his lap.
“I don’t know, you mentioned something about fixing stuffed animals during one of our projects.”
“And you remembered?”
“Yeah, I know. I even shock myself sometimes.” She smirked smugly, crossing her legs and putting her hands behind her head.
Niliana rolled her eyes, sitting down and putting a hand out to Luz. The girl eeped gleefully, rushing to give her the tea cup.
“Now, what do you want me to focus on?”
“Uh, what?” Luz asked.
“I need something to focus on. So, what do you want to know?”
Luz thought for a moment, then beamed.
“Oh, oh, I know! Will I ever fall in love?”
Eda rolled her eyes, mumbling something about teenagers and love. Niliana smirked at that before gazing into the cup. A moment later her eyes started glowing teal. Luz watched, fascinated. Several moments passed in silence before Luz got too impatient.
“Well? What do you see?”
Niliana closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again. They were no longer glowing, returned to their usual golden brown. She thought for a moment, Luz staring at her intently, slowly inching closer to the witch.
“You will fall in love. In fact, you’ll fall in love with someone you already know and who you’re already close with.” She finally said, placing the cup down on the coffee table.
“Whoa, really? How do you know?”
“When I read your tea leaves, I focus intently on you and whatever you want to know, in this case, love. When I go into my trance, I don’t really see things, I feel things. They're more like impressions. I felt love, that’s how I know you will fall in love with someone. But I also felt a sense of familiarity, which is how I know it’s someone close to you. I’d advise you to figure out if any of your friends like you.”
“Whoa…” Luz whispered, looking amazed. Eda chuckled. It was amazing that her face didn’t freeze like that.
“Alright, hotshot. If you’re so good at this then read my stupid leaves.” She said, leaning forward, her teacup hanging off a finger. Niliana snatched it before it could fall and shatter. She shot the other witch a hard look.
“What do you want to know?”
“I don’t know, just tell me something about my love life or whatever.”
The witch stared into the teacup for a moment before her eyes lit up once more.
“This is all nonsense anyway,” Eda added, sitting back and crossing her arms. Luz looked taken aback.
“What? Why?”
“Simple. There’s no such thing as a set future. It hasn’t happened yet! Sure, you can be told what might happen and give all sorts of random advice or whatever, but it’s you’re own actions that determine what really happens. That’s not something she can control.”
Luz looked a little downtrodden by her mentors' words, but brightened almost instantly.
“So she can’t tell exactly what’ll happen, but she can point me in the right direction! It’s like well-informed advice.”
Eda waved a hand dismissively.
“Whatever you say, kid. Personally, I don’t let this stuff get to me.”
Niliana blinked, her eyes returning to normal once more.
“... alright, there’s a lot more to go through here.” She commented, looking rather thoughtful.
Eda frowned, just a bit irritated.
“What’s that supposed to mean.”
The woman didn’t seem affected by Eda’s steely tone, continuing with her even, soft voice.
“You have a pretty crazy love life already, it can be hard to sift through. You feel a lot of love for the people around you, so it's hard to say if there’s anything new there … There will be others that’ll come into your life and join your little family, that’s for sure. For a wanted criminal, you really draw them in.”
Eda huffed, her irritation fading as a soft smile spread on her face.
“I suppose so... “
She tried not to react to the look Luz was giving her.
It was a few more seconds before Niliana spoke up again.
“For someone who’s dated a lot, you haven’t felt a who lot of romantic love before. But there will be someone someday. Probably someone from your past. You may be nervous about it, it’ll be odd and new, but It’ll be worth it. My advice would be to not go searching for anything, but don’t shove anyone away who might want to get close to you. You may never find love if you stay closed off. But make sure they’re making an effort, too.”
She gave a little nod, satisfied with her reading, and put the teacup next to the other.
“My turn! I want a reading too!” King piped up. Niliana nodded and made him a cup. He snatched it out of her hands with a “nyeh’ and gulped it down. He shoved the now empty cup into her face. “Do your magic, Lady!”
Niliana chuckled, taking the cup from him and reading it.
“You, dear, are going to live a very happy life surrounded by the ones you love. You’ll be very pampered like you are now.”
“Yes! Only the best for the King of Demons!” King said, puffing his chest out. Eda pat his head, nearly knocking him over.
“Whatever you say, tiny.”
They left shortly after that, all waving as the left. Niliana waved back from her tent.
“I liked her. We should visit again sometime!” Luz said, looking up at Eda expectantly. King did the same from Luz’s arms, tail wagging. Eda sighed, a smirk crawling onto her face.
“Fine, if you want.”
The two cheered, running ahead a bit. Eda smiled at them.

Won’t you let me in?
Fandom: The Owl House
Relationships: Eda & Luz
Summary: After the events of Separate Tides, Eda and Luz have a talk. Title is from the song “Strange Sight” by KT Tunstall.
AO3
What a day this is turning out to be, Eda thought as the so-called “Golden Guard” approached her and Luz.
The witch had originally planned to take the money back to the house after checking in on the Selkidomus.
But then she got caught, and it turned out Luz was on the ship instead of safe at home. (She had expected Luz to follow the cart home after they started driving back to the house) The kid had apparently wanted in on the bounty hunt, once again not knowing what she was getting into. Forget the money that was forgotten in the boiling sea, Luz was more important! Eda had of course questioned her.
“Now why were YOU on that ship to begin with? You could've gotten killed!”
And then the Golden Chump showed up, and here they are.
“Hello, criminals!” He said. “What's about to happen should be relatively painless. If you just do what I say.”
“And why would we do that?” Luz retorted.
“Because none of you can use real magic.” He said, pointing a finger at the both of them.
Eda narrowed her eyes and pointed back. “You don't know that.” Sure, glyph magic was different, but she won't stand the talk of it not being “real”. They haven't seen Luz in action.
The Golden Guard shrugged. “Maybe not. But I do know you're standing on a plant that eats flesh.”
On cue, Eda and Luz looked down to see that they were indeed, standing on a flesh eating plant. And just in time, both of them could already feel the thing burning through their shoes. They yelped and lept to the side as the guard just watched.
Ugh, stupid Golden Guard…, Eda thought.
“Ahahaha! Okay.” He chortled. “The human will remain a sailor to repay all the money she lost.”
Eda tensed up at that idea. As if she'd allow Luz to become a pawn for the stupid emperor, just for some stupid money!
Luz needs to be safe at home…
“While the Owl Lady will be arrested, again! For attacking one of the emperor's ships.”
Luz looked at Eda, surprised. “Emperor’s ship?” She repeated.
“They're the only ones worth robbing.” Eda replied. At least the kid didn't know. She thought. She supposed Luz wouldn't have gone if she knew this was a setup from Belos. She turned back to the guard.
“Why are you guys hunting the Selkidomus? It's a peaceful creature and you're provoking it!” Eda demanded.
“The emperor ordered me to slay one. I'm just following orders.” The guard said nonchalantly.
Losing her cool, Eda glared at him. “Well I'm just gonna smack you around a bit!” She shouted, snapping her arm off. Unfortunately, the Golden Guard was too quick for her, dodging her to the point where she tripped.
“Leave Eda alone!” Eda heard Luz shout. Then the kid was tossed aside next to her.
Apparently, the dingus wasn't finished with them quite yet, because he then threatened to dip them into the Boiling Sea, ouch, but then he changed his mind.
“I don't have to be that mean.” He said snarkily.
Titan I hate this guy already…
“No one will have to be a sailor or get arrested. If one of you follows those Selkidomus tracks and slays the beast.” He ordered. “Here! I'll help!” Then the guard materialized a sword into the air, dropping it in front of them.
What is it with the coven and slaying innocent creatures?!
Luz looked at the sword, and back up to the guard, pleading with her eyes.
The guard rubbed his mask. “Ugh, you're making this difficult. Go, or I drown the bird.” He said, revealing King behind the cage he had. Thankfully, the demon appeared unharmed.
Eda looked at Luz, seeing her conflicted face. If she had Owlbert with her right now, she would've grabbed her kid and tried to make a break for it, as if the ordeal never happened.
But of course it wasn't that simple.
Luz sighed. “Fine.” And to Eda’s alarm, she picked up the sword. “I'll do it.” She said in a low voice.
Eda reached out an arm as Luz headed towards the cave.
“Luz, wait!” She pleaded. There had to be a way out of this other than killing! “Luz!”
On the way to the area where the Selkidomus was, Eda was trying to disuade Luz from doing what she was about to do.
“Luz, don't hurt the Selkidomus. We can find another way out of this.” She said.
But Luz kept walking. “You heard what he said, Eda. If you and King want to be free…” Luz stopped in front of a ditch and jumped onto a shipwreck. “Then I have to do this alone.”
The witch found it hard to ignore that Luz excluded herself from the “being free” deal, and her heart started pounding at the sight of Luz being above a ditch again. She didn't like where this was going at all.
“What's this ‘alone’ business? Don't you remember?” Eda tried reminding her. “Us weirdos have to-”
“What? Stick together?” Luz snapped. She looked at Eda, forlorn, almost startling her with the sadness in her face. “Because you stuck with me you lost your magic! You almost got turned to stone, and now you can't even afford your apple blood because you're worried about what I need to eat!” She rambled, looking down sadly.
Eda stared at Luz, her heart breaking for the girl. She knew Luz was going through some things, but she didn't think it was this bad. Only a week and a half of them being together again, and Luz still blames herself. She should've paid more attention in the last week. Eda tried to find the words to tell Luz that no, this isn't your fault, you can come down from there and we can find a different way to go back home together.
But before Eda could come up with an answer, the Selkidomus below growled, meaning it was awake. Luz kept her balance on the beam, then looked away from Eda.
“It's my fault all this happened, that's why I've got to do this alone.” She looked back at Eda, smiling. “I'll make it all up to you, Eda the Owl Lady. I promise.”
Then, to Eda’s horror, Luz let herself fall off the beam and down the ditch. She couldn't help reaching her hands out, as if she could actually catch her. Her heart dropped to her stomach and she couldn't help crying out Luz’s name.
No, no, NO-
Suddenly, Eda was reminded of that day on the bridge. Her sister tossing Luz aside like a ragdoll, into the ditch, that terrified little girl screaming as she fell, onto the spikes-
“LUZ!”
Eda shook herself out of her stupor, reminding herself of what to do.
Thinking quickly, Eda grabbed a nearby vibe and lept down the ditch to find her kid.
She just got her back, and she'll be damned if she lost her again.
Soon enough, the witch found a safe ledge to stand on and Eda spotted the kid on the ground, preparing to throw herself at the Selkidomus, which was already defending itself. Eda spotted a nearby branch, thick and strong enough to use. She tugged on it, preparing to swing.
Just as Luz had catapaulted herself in the air with her ice glyph, Eda swung in just in time. She wrapped an arm around Luz, holding her as tight and as close as possible under one arm so she wouldn't be dropped.
I gotcha, kiddo!
Thankfully they were able to avoid the creature’s jaws and landed safely in a bush.
As soon as they landed, Luz had tumbled out of Eda’s arms and clumsily sat back up. Eda recovered as well, turning back to the kid.
Eda pointed a finger at Luz, and she stared back with wide eyes, startled.
“You think throwing your life away is gonna help me? Well it won't.” Eda said firmly. She needed Luz to hear this. Luz deserved to hear this.
“You helped me find King’s crown when you barely knew me, you saved me from turning to stone,” Eda averted her eyes from the kid, starting to feel emotional. “And you even got me talking to my sister again.” She looked back up, seeing that Luz was still listening.
“So…unfortunately for you…my life is pretty great because I'm friends with Luz the Human.” Eda finished, her voice wavering.
That seemed to be exactly what Luz needed, because now she was looking at her with glistening eyes and a trembling lip.
Eda blinked her eyes hard to keep the tears at bay, and her face got serious again.
Focus, Eda, we need to get out of here.
“Now,” She snapped out of it and grabbed Luz’s face, startling her. “Your guilt-ridden brain is clouding your judgement.” She said, poking Luz’s forehead. “There’s gotta be a way out of this where no one has to get hurt.” Eda let go of the kid’s cheeks and looked around the cave.
Just then, a small noise made them turn around. A baby Selkidomus had approached them. Luz looked at it for a moment, putting the pieces together in her head, then turned back to Eda.
“Eda,” the witch looked at Luz, willing to hear any plan she had right now.
“Do you wanna learn your first glyph?” She asked with a determined smile, holding up one of her light glyphs.
Not for the first time, Eda marvels at just how bright her kid is.
~
Later, Luz and Eda had managed to create a fake Selkidomus out of plant glyphs and made it work by using the light glyphs to fool the Golden Guard into thinking they were fighting the real thing.
The power of theatrics and a bright young mind.
Moments later, Eda had gotten up and used whatever paper was left to draw more light glyphs on the ground.
She still remembers the first time Luz casted these glyphs. They were so beautiful, and Eda always found them comforting. And now she gets to draw them herself. It only took a week for her to finally try it, but it was worth it.
It wasn’t long before Luz returned with King safely out of the cage. When she approached, Eda took a ball of light in her hands and glanced up at Luz.
“My first glyph! Did I do good?” If she was being completely honest, Eda felt like a giddy little kid again, learning new magic and sharing it with the people she loved. It felt wonderful.
Luz observed her with a bright smile. “Yeah! You did great!”
The baby Selkidomus returned, quickly worming its way toward Luz, nuzzling her, which delighted the kid as she was hugging back.
“Baby, awwwww!” She cooed, and a part of Eda was relieved to see the Luz she knew begin to return.
“Wait- what is that?!” King asked, alarmed.
“Don’t worry, King, once the mother saw we weren’t a threat to her baby she calmed down.” Eda reassured, patting the baby gently. Then she turned to the mother behind them. “This area is dangerous,” she explained. “You need to move further out, into the sea.”
Understanding Eda’s warning, the creature nodded. Then something strange happened. It started...gagging. Until it puked up a pile of some gold goop, which Eda recognized to be Selkie Gris.
Mother of Titan, they hit the jackpot!
Luz stared at it with disgust for a few seconds before Eda excitedly pulled her close in a side hug.
“Hot dang! It gave you the treasure of the sea!” Eda said in excitement, holding her kid with one arm and holding the other arm out to present their prize.
“Gold? ...Tuna?” Luz said in confusion.
“It’s Selkie Gris!” Eda let Luz go and scooped some of the stuff into her hands. “People pay big money for it at the night market!” Seeing Luz’s still confused face, she got an idea. The witch smushed it in her hands and took the opportunity to rub it on the kid’s face. “Ahh, feeelll the money, Luz! Luxuriate it!” She teased.
“No, no, Eda! Ahh!” As expected, Luz protested and squirmed against the touch, but she was starting to laugh, which is what Eda wanted.
Eda smirked, taking hold of the kid’s hands as she tried and failed to get away. “What? Don’t like to luxuriate? There’s a whole pile of luxury right here!” Then she grabbed Luz’s arms and swiftly tossed her into the pile, earning a yelp from the girl. “Move over!” Eda said, following suit and landing face down.
“Edaa!” Luz protested, but she broke out into laughter with Eda. It filled the witch with much joy to see Luz laughing and smiling again. She deserved it after the rough day they just had.
With that being said, after a minute, Eda got up and decided it was finally time to head home. Maintaining her balance, she reached her hands out to Luz and hoisted her up, keeping a tight grip on her so she wouldn’t fall.
Thankfully, the Golden Guard didn’t obliterate her boat, so they had a way back home. Eda used an extra sack she had to bag the Selkie gris so they could take it home. It was significantly lighter than the snails. They would have to make a trip the night market to trade it off soon. Something had finally gone right today!
“You ready to go home?” Eda asked, turning to Luz, who was settled behind her with King on her shoulder.
“Aye-aye, captain!” Luz said, saluting.
That’s the Luz I know and love, Eda thought. “Alrighty then, brace yourself!” and she, King and Luz started their way back home.
~
It was seven in the evening, and the trio had made it home. After Lilith had presented her scrying potion, Eda had gone off to order their takeout, leaving Luz alone with her thoughts in the hallway.
...Something Luz really didn’t like doing.
A lot had happened all in one night, from her and Eda getting ambushed by the Golden Guard, to her being forced to go slay the Selkidomus (knowing she was about to take away a baby’s mother back there made it worse to think about), to Eda talking her out of it.
In all honesty, Luz felt like she needed to hear those words. Eda was right. She had done so much to help her, and she did seem happier whenever Luz was around. Maybe she wasn’t a burden after all…
She was snapped out of her thoughts when the witch in question came back around the corner.
“Well, I’m tired. How about you, kid?” She said, yawning.
“Hungry.” Luz said simply.
“Don’t worry, food should be here in about a half hour.” Eda replied, ruffling Luz’s hair. Then she noticed a familiar look on her face. “You okay, kid?”
Luz shook herself out of her thoughts. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
Eda put a hand on her shoulder. “I know that look. You’re deep in thought.” Luz looked down at the floor. “Do you wanna talk about it? You know you don’t have to if you don’t want to.” The witch knew it would only make it worse for the girl to keep things inside. And after what happened in the cave, she wanted to know how it got this bad.
Luz supposes it wouldn’t hurt. She trusted Eda. “Okay…” she gave a small nod.
Eda slung an arm around her shoulders. ‘’C’mon, walk with me.” and the two walked slowly down the hallway.
“A lot just happened tonight.”
“That’s for sure.” Eda agreed. “I- you really scared me back there, you know?” she said, hand tightening on Luz’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry.” Luz answered. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Eda. She supposes she doesn’t always consider that endangering herself contributes to that. “I just...wanted to make things right.”
They stopped walking as Eda turned to her. “You don’t owe me anything, Luz. You know that, right?” She said, meeting the girl’s eyes.
“But-”
“No buts. I promise I’m not angry, kiddo, I just hate seeing you like this.” She sighs. “I wish you would’ve told me before things got this far.” Noticing Luz starting to sag, she guides them to sit against the wall so they can talk more comfortably.
“I promise I’m not angry.” Eda repeats softly. “You're just a kid, you really shouldn't have to carry shit like this…”
Luz takes a breath and continues to speak. “I hated seeing you and Lilith have such a hard time with money. And most of the money that we did have was spent on me. I-I thought that if I got a big enough bounty, you wouldn’t have to worry so much about me anymore, and I wouldn’t be such a burden to you.” Luz could feel tears starting to build up. “But I guess I messed that up.”
“Hey.” Eda said, tilting Luz’s wobbling chin up. “Listen to me. Don’t you think like that.” She moved the hand to Luz’s shoulder. “You were never a burden, okay?”
Luz looked at her with teary eyes. “Really?”
“Really. A burden is an unwanted responsibility. But you?” Eda used her thumb to gently wipe away some of Luz’s tears. “I’ll never get tired of you. You're the best thing that's happened to me in a long time. I want to take care of you. You mean so much to me.”
At this point, Luz is smiling wide with a few stray tears rolling down her face. “Do you really mean that?”
Eda nodded, cupping her cheek. “Of course I do. I told you a week ago that I don’t regret anything. You’re a wonderful kid, Luz. Anyone that calls you otherwise is stupid.” Luz giggles at that. “I’ll pummel anyone that says otherwise.”
Luz hesitantly moves in for a hug, and Eda draws her in easily. “You promise?”
Eda nods, pulling Luz closer. “I promise. It’s okay.” She begins to stroke Luz’s hair a little bit. Then another thought intrudes her mind. Her grip tightens around her kid once more.
“You really scared me when you jumped down there…” Eda spoke. “I thought I was gonna lose you again.” The memory of Luz falling towards those spikes is never going away anytime soon. The witch felt like her nightmares were coming true. No way in hell does she ever want to go through that again.
Luz nuzzles closer. “I know… I promise I’ll be more careful.” She isn’t sure it’s a promise she can keep, but she’s willing to try. A part of Luz notices that Eda’s becoming more and more casual with touch, but chooses to ignore it.
“Good.” Eda pulled away from the embrace, still holding Luz by her shoulders. “Remember that, okay? I don’t want you talking to yourself like this.” She said, tapping the kid’s head.
“I will.” Before they got up, Luz moved in for one more hug. “I love you, Eda.” Not for the first time, Luz was grateful that Eda made no small effort to just be there for her. She underestimated her.
Eda hugged her back. “I love you too, Luz.”
Then, a knock at the door, and a screech from Hooty.
“Looks like the food’s here! You still hungry, kiddo?”
“Oh my god, yes.” Luz groaned.
Eda laughed, stood up, and offered a hand to help Luz up. Unfortunately, the girl stood up too quickly, causing her to stumble a bit.
“Ahhh, head rush, head rush!” Luz murmured. She held onto Eda’s hand.
“You good?” Eda asked with a laugh.
“Yup, yup, I’m good. Just stood up too fast.”
“Wanna race to the kitchen?” Eda offered. “I’ll give you a head start.”
Luz chuckled. “You’re on!”
Yeah, Eda thought, looking fondly at her kid. I still don’t regret anything.
And Luz looked at Eda, seeing her heterochromatic eyes. True, the witch might've lost all her powers, but she didn't lose her love.

Tumblr media
Where we last left off, the true form of Doppelgänger was revealed and Luz, the sweetheart, continued to be unusually sympathetic to the literal snake that stole her identity.
Tumblr media
Namedrop! Doppelgänger’s real name is Vee! Which I already knew. Although that’s probably a good thing, otherwise I’d probably spell her name Wea or something. Ví. Wii. V.
When Luz asks about her name, Vee hesitates and stumbles over her words. I’m not quite sure, but I think she says something like ”I never found-” Now, this would not be the first time my ears have played tricks on me (see previous episode for a demonstration), but it sounds like Vee might not have found out what her real name is. So a similar situation to King then.
Also, I guess it wasn’t Vee who was behind the traps like I thought. I was thinking, 'cause you know… snake. Snakes eat rabbits, right? But Luz was familiar with how the trap worked, so someone’s been setting them before she departed for the Demon Realm.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be thinking about Vee slipping up and calling Camila ”mom” for like a week, aren’t I?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also get a namedrop for Luz hometown. Gravesfield! Which I already knew, although for once, I inflicted that particular spoiler on myself.
Luz dismisses it as junk, but lets take a quick look at the first page. The first thing that caught my attention was that this Jacob Hopkins fella appears to have noticed strange goings on in Gravesfield. Like how someone is stealing garbage and also putting feathers in his coffee. That’s obviously Eda, as confirmed on the next page. We know Eda has been coming to the Human Realm for some thirty years now, so that’s plenty of time to cause plenty of mischief. Like harassing random strangers at a cafe and then enchanting some books to attack them when they don’t let her skip the line.
It seems Luz has the idea to visit the cafe so Vee can gobble up some of that leftover magic so they can shapeshift. Thats’ good and all, but ah… to do that, Vee’s gonna have to get there, and she’s kinda… conspicuous.
If we look at the first image again, we can see an old-timey fella there shaking hands with a witch (who has a devil tail). Say, do you guys know of any old-timey fellas important to The Plot of this show?
Philip Wittebane’s from Gravesfield, I’m calling it now. That’s why the portal door leads there. The image is either of him with a witch/demon he brought back with him, or based on rumors spread about him as he told people back home of his adventures. Because, you know, witches and the devil…
So with this in mind… if it wasn’t Vee, then who has been leaving the traps? It could just be some guy who really wanna eat some rabbits, but… if the portal always opens at this old shack, then it’s not unreasonable for someone to notice strange things happening there, like an owl dragging comically large sacks of trash there. Heck, that’s how Luz ended up in the Demon Realm to begin with! So I’m wondering if these traps might have been set up by someone, like the Jacob Hopkins dude for instance, to try and catch Owlbert and/or Eda. It might be a stretch, I just have a feeling is all.
Tumblr media
OKAY, turns out that it was not a stretch at all, someone is clearly very interested in this old shack. And now they have footage of what looks like Luz transforming into a strange monster. And if the camera records audio, then they have even more than that. This can not be a good thing. For starters, it has the potential of ruining Luz’ and Vee’s little scheme of making sure Camila stays happy and ignorant about her daughter’s disappearance and replacement. If go even further, it could also mean that Vee could get captured, killed or experimented on. Or all three and probably in that order.
Tumblr media
So Gravesfield was founded in 1635. You know who else was from roughly that same time period? Philip Wittebane! And granted, this one might actually be stretching a bit, but those wings on the town shield look a bit like the wings on the Emperor’s Coven symbol.
I will also point out that Gravesfield is a strange name for a town. It’s kinda ominous. It sounds of death.

🎶Knock, Knock, Knockin' On Hooty's Door🎵
I wonder if anything will happen in this episode.🙂
(I say as if I didn't watch the episode twice before going to bed and writing this post)
I don't think I'll ever not be amused by the way Hooty just...does things with his face
Seems like he found a thesaurus at some point
Okay so it's canonically spelled "Hootsifer," good to know
Also, this is really all we get of Lilith, huh?
His little hoot/coo at Lilith's letter❤❤❤
To borrow a meme format: If I had a nickel for every time Alex Hirsch was involved in a show where one of the characters was experiencing pubescent voice cracks, I'd have two nickels, which isn't very much but it's weird that it happened twice
Eda's face🤣
As much as this bit is played for laughs, Eda's clearly still shaken by what happened last episode
Jeez, Luz, priorities /j
Pictured: Hooty
Tumblr media
The way King talks about being pelleted implies this is something Hooty does on the regular
Hooty's plan to help King is literally a Buzzfeed quiz? Okay then
Betcha never expected lore from Hooty, eh?
"DO NOT INTERRUPT"
Officially a "type of worm"
The dance being a grievous insult wasn't exactly from nowhere, but still funny nonetheless
WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THE FUCKING COCCOON
Tiny Nose playing Switch definitely seems to be drawing from Dana's real life experiences
Wait, Hooty and Tiny Nose are friends?
Well shit, turns out she could use magic this whole time. Guess her going Super Saiyan wasn't just the power glyph.
I am extremely skeptical of your medical credentials, TN
I have so many questions about the methodology they used for the blood test(s)
I think Hooty may have misinterpreted what King was looking for
I'm still amazed at how King has had, and continues to have, moments in the show with some of the greatest emotional weight
Ooh, sound powers!
"IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CRUMBLE!!!"
It just occurred to me that that segment consisted mostly of Alex Hirsch talking to himself
Hello not-at-all obvious setup
Today I learned that Hooty is the baker of the house. Maybe he'd critique Amity's fairy pie.
Aaaaand there's the sleep inducing
Oh shit
In hindsight the Owl Beast being part of a dream sequence is rather obvious
Wow, Eda, tell us how you really feel about the Owl Beast
Oh we're just gonna ride aboard the Trauma Express today, huh?
Oh, I guess Lilith did make an appearance, after all
Damn, Gwen, not even looking
Oh shit dad issues
Sandy Cohen?! (To anyone who gets that reference, hi. How are your 30s treating you?)
Well, I know who Peter Gallagher voices now, anyway
Oh dear...
(Also, bright flashing lights triggering the curse? There's an epilepsy allegory in here somwhere)
Blood and eye injury? Gotta stretch that Y7 rating
Now we have some context for that look on Eda's face when Lilith mentioned their dad: good old fashioned guilt!
I desparately want to make a "Dude, you're getting a Dell!" joke, but I'm better than that
New memory! Raine!
Oh no...
I get the feeling I'll hate this part, too
They were exes!😢 Guess the fandom called that one
The reasoning for them being exes is understandable, all too real, and goddamn heartbreaking
That said, the fact they never stopped loving each other🥺😢😭
I do hope we can see Raine again under less...traumatic circumstances. Maybe that wedding that was mentioned?
Oh shit, are we getting into the Owl Beast's memories?!?! What a tweest!
Bet nobody expected Cloaked Moonface to show up in the frickin Hooty episode
(Also, holy shit I briefly forgot this was the Hooty episode)
Who is this mysterious cloaked figure? And why are they so tall and long?
So the curse was a sealed beast this whole time. Damn.
And it was just picked up as beach junk to sell as a trinket. So much for it being connected to Belos. (Not that people will stop trying to do so)
Who had "experiencing sympathy for the Owl Beast" on their Bingo cards for this episode? Yeah, me neither.
And here we have the necessary Eda coming to terms with her curse segment. More accurately, Eda and the curse coming to terms with each other.
Goddamnit why does it have to be cute
"It's like sandpaper" IT'S LIKE A CAT I FUCKING CAN'T
Insert Steamed Hams reference here to kill the mood
New transformation!
Oh no she's hot!
No, Hooty, you made it surprisingly much, much better!
She might have a problem pushing people away and holding onto guilt, but Eda always knows that she looks damn good
Oh right, Luz having girl problems. Fuck, so much is happening in this episode!
"Cotton-candy-haired Goddess" LUZ! 🤣
Attuned to other people's emotions = being a fucking creeper
Oh Luz, what happened to you back home?
Also, 99.999% certain Amity would love your cheesiness
That's...rather morbid, Hooty
So much lore development, including the fact the Owl House has a basement
Classic inanimate object silhouette fakeout gag. Subversion in 3...2...1...
There it is!
I can't imagine being pelleted is a fun experience.
Honestly I have so many questions about how Hooty got Amity there in the first place, but I'm not so sure I actually want to know the answers to any of them...
Cue much panicking
Wow, I'm really getting some Into the Bunker flashbacks
Oh this is gonna be amazing isn't it
I commend Luz for not actually dropping dead of embarrassment
Seriously, how can Hooty set all this up so fast yet not hold a pen?!?!?!
Poor Luz, she thinks this is destroying her chances
Meanwhile Amity is just "Oh, Titan, is this actually happening?!"
The way she's fixing her hair!❤
Goddamnit Luz let this play out, she's so clearly into this!
"Again?!" Okay who do I have to kill?
Luz is luzing it
Nooooooo....
JUST TALK FOR FUCK'S SAKE (aka how like 95% of issues in literally any plot could be solved)
Noooo Amity's so heartbroken right now💔
This isn't what either of them wanted!
To be fair, Hooty, Luz had a part in this too. Not that she can be blamed entirely. Poor thing clearly had some awful experiences back home...
Now Hooty is McFucking losing it
Why did I think he was gonna say "Looks like I'm gonna have to JUMP!" I think I've watched too much Homestar Runner (jk there's no such thing)
Those pulsating organs are still gross
Eda swooping in to save her son (No, really, he actually is now)
I'll say things get weird when Hooty gets upset!
Yes, King! Save them with your voice powers!
Damn that is some romantic lighting, and Luz is enjoying the eye candy (cotton candy, if you will)
Luz's reaction to Harpy!Eda is the family-friendly summation of how the fandom has reacted.
Hooty really just tearing up the landscape in remorse
Mother-daughter moment about love life!
I appreciate not just Eda's encouragement but her actually asking Luz what she wanted
God, Eda is best mom
Also, OH FUCK IS THIS HAPPENING?!
OH SHIT
THESE ADORABLY AWKWARD NERDS❤💜💙
"I'm not as cool as you think" could be interpreted as self-deprecating, but here it seems...oddly reassuring?
The way Luz eloquently says how she wants Amity in her future...beautiful❤
Luz making some good faces
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
YOU CUTE DORKS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH
THERE IT IS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
LOOK HOW HAPPY SHE IS
Tumblr media
WE WERE LOSING OUR SHIT OVER A PECK ON THE CHEEK THREE WEEKS AGO AND NOW LOOK WHERE WE ARE HOLY FUCK
Awkwardness is still there, but that's to be expected
BET Y'ALL DIDN'T EXPECT THAT TRAILER SHOT TO BE IN THE HOOTY EPISODE HUH
THE WAY LUZ RUBS AMITY'S HAND😭😭😭😭😭
Tumblr media
(And yeah, it's gonna still be scary, but only because it promises to be so wonderful)
Let's give it up for Hootsifer, goddamn!
Let'a also appreciate just how fucking funny it is that Lumity becomes official in the Hooty episode
Fus ro WEH!
Hooty actually saying "Luz's new GF" out loud...
In just about any other show the love interests getting together would be a climax/culmination of the entire plot. Here? It's actually used to advance the plot, and that is brilliant!
Dana Terrace and the crew really just knocking it out of the park again and again, huh
"They're adorable, and deserve all the happiness!" Well said, Hootsifer. Well said.
Probably for the best they had Hooty promise that. As much as what happened/progressed, there was a lot of property damage.
OH SHIT ONCE AGAIN
King's dad/relative! And he's voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson!
GODDAMNIT HOOTY
Wow. Just...wow. This episode.
King has voice powers! Harpy!Eda! Lumity are girlfriends for real!!!!
How do you pack so much into a single episode?! And so expertly?!
I had my suspicions before, but this confirms it: The Owl House is the greatest show of all time.
And we have two episodes left until the hiatus! And 11 episodes in the season after that! What are we in for?!?!?!
I, for one, can't wait to find out!

Hockey AU: Parenting Pt. 1
Well after a week of posting I finally finished the first part in the next arc that we'll see of Hockey AU. This one is big. I don't think I'll need to explain much further so instead enjoy. (Just a reminder that not all of the parts for this arc are done so it may be a week or two between updates or longer).
***
Amity was breathing heavily as she collided into the group pile with her teammates. Another game won. Cheers rang out through the stadium, almost deafening the thundering of her heartbeat in her chest.
"FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 9 YEARS, THE OTTERS ARE IN THE SEMI-FINALS!"
Another cheer erupted from inside the pile. They had worked so hard for this. Emotions were high and Amity let the energy buzz through her. This was it! Just 2 more games and they could be in the finals. They could be champs!
Someone collided into her going top speed and soon the entire team had her swept up in a group hug. Lotke was behind her in an instant, hoisting their star player on their towering shoulders as the team skated around their victory lap. From the vantage, Amity had only eyes for one person. Talking with the coach in the players box, their eyes met across the rink and the roar of the crowd and her teammates quieted instantly.
Luz smiled back at her, a huge grin that threatened to split her face in two. Her eyes were sparkling with pride and love.
She slipped away from the small huddle of officials. Her eyes widening, Amity tugged on Lokte's jersey, pointing frantically at Luz and unable to speak over the roar of the stadium. Thankfully, they understood immediately. Gathering the team together, the Otter's skated towards the players box as one. Lokte let Amity slip off of their shoulder and the witch caught her girlfriend just as Luz hit the ice. Within the huddle of their teammates they were in a bubble. No noise, no judgement, just them. Luz flung her arms over Amity's shoulders and kissed her roughly on her cheek, eliciting a giggle out of the both of them. A call rang out for the teams to line up and shake hands and the world tunred into a blur of events and emotions, the high of their victory only wearing off in the locker rooms after.
***
"Don't forget everyone pizza after the game at Mangia's tonight! Oh, and don't forget to let your parents know about Celebration Night."
Amity looked up from taking her skates off. Lokte was waving at a couple of their teammates as they made their way out of the locker room, gear in hand.
"What's Celebration Night?" Luz asked the question that was at the forefront of Amity's mind.
Lokte's eyes widened as they turned towards the only other two people in the little locker alcove they had positioned in to change.
"Oh, it's a big event night for all the teams that made it to the Semi-Finals. There's one for each of the first games, kinda like a way to recognize the team members and their accomplishments. I just wanted to remind everyone so they don't forget to tell their parents or anyone else they want to stand up with them." Lokte explained as they bent down to take off their skates.
"Oh..." Luz said quietly.
Snap
The string of her skate ripped as Amity went to yank it undone. Her hands were shaking.
A pair of footsteps walked by her as she slowly unraveled the broken string. Amity looked up as they seemed to stop in front of her. Mae, the normally timid and shy goalie smiled down at her.
"Hey… Amity. I just wanted to thank you. You've done so much for this team. I think you've pretty much helped every single person be better. You and Luz of course."
Amity glanced back up to where Luz was and saw her straighten with pride. Smiling, Amity turned back to Mae.
"Oh… it's nothing, really. I'm just really glad to be a part of a team. You all mean a lot to the both of us." Amity admitted shyly, unable to meet the goalie's eyes. She picked up her stick and stood up, ready to start packing her bag.
Mae stepped back to allow her some space and her smile grew.
"I'm really looking forward to meeting your parents on Celebration Night. They really must be something to raise someone as incredible as you." Mae said kindly before turning to rush out of the locker room after her friends.
Amity's stick fell to the ground as she stood there frozen. The sound of it clattering echoed in the now nearly empty locker room. The words the goalie spoke bounced around in her head in a haunting echo.
'They really must be something.'
There was a beat of silence before Amity winced with the sharp sound of a fist banging against a locker.
"Luz? Is everything ok?!" She heard Lokte exclaim behind her.
Slowly, Amity leaned down and picked up the stick she had dropped. Her hands found the smooth grooves her gloves had worn into it and her fingers trailed the chipped parts where the puck had bounced off it at just the right angle. She kept herself steady with the familiarity of it, taking a deep breath before turning around to face her girlfriend and teammate.
Luz had her fist pressed firmly into a locker and Lokte was caught between them both, looking worriedly from one girl to the next. As soon as Amity turned around, Luz's fist dropped and her anger melted into worry.
"Amity?"
"I uh… I don't think I'm going to be able to go to pizza with the team tonight Lokte… I'm sorry." Amity spoke after a pause, struggling to keep her voice steady.
"Luz?" She asked quietly, the walls she had been trying to keep up rapidly failing.
Luz immediately darted to the witch's side, laying a comforting hand on her shoulder. The warmth was just enough to steady her.
"Right here." Luz said softly, her head leaning into Amity's. The witch closed her eyes and leaned right back into Luz, the girl being the one thing managing to keep her standing. To keep her together.
"Let's go home…"
***
"Are you sure your up for this?" Luz asked Amity gently as they hung back outside of the cabin.
Amity shot her a weak smile, one that only barely made it to her eyes.
"It's fine. Everyone is looking forward to it. Plus we can't just tell everyone to go home, it's a long walk out of the castle after all."
"Of course you did. Come on, or your mom's going to get worried."
"Not anymore it's not! I convinced Eda to add slides from some of the upper floors." Luz grinned mischievously. "Me and King have had the honor of being their test-runners."
Amity laughed, rolling her eyes she grabbed ahold of Luz's arm and hooked it through her own.
Walking through the doorway they had yet to fix up, Camila turned and relief showed in her eyes. In front of her was the patched portal door, held open by the one and only Edalyn Clawthorne, Co-Empress of the Isles.
"There you two slackers are, will you please help me convince Camila, again, that it's ok to have a little fun for once in her life?!" The wild witch groaned as she hung halfway between worlds.
Camila rolled her eyes.
"That's not what I said and you know it. Girls are you sure everything is alright? You were both awfully quiet after your game, if you need to me to stay-"
"Go." Amity said simply, cutting her off with a warm laugh. "We'll be fine. And we both know Eda won't be if she gets too many rounds deep with Perry and you aren't there to keep the peace."
Luz snickered as Eda's eyes widened. The older witch gasped in insult and the hand holding the door retracted to her chest. The portal closed as she stood there looking wounded. In a blinding flash of light and magic the door disappeared into nothingness.
Left in the dark, unlit, cabin the small family all looked at each other. Luz was the first to laugh, followed by her mother and her girlfriend. Reaching into her shirt she pulled out the key that she kept around her neck and clicked the eye-shaped button twice. In an instant the door was back. Standing solely on it's own, the yellow eye in the center glowing softly. Camila firmly grasped the handle and flung it open only to be greeted with a rush of kids flying through it.
"Friends!" Luz cheered as Willow and Gus tackled both her and Amity in a tight hug.
"We heard about the win tonight, congrats! That's incredible!" Willow beamed at Amity who merely nodded in return, a small smile showing on her face.
Gus pulled Luz aside and stepped away from their friends for a moment.
"We need to start planning signs and banners stat. We are cheer con 4 and this is no longer a drill. We are in the red zone Luz. The red zone." He uttered quietly to the human who grew immediately serious.
"Wow. I never thought we'd reach that stage. What do we do? What can we do?!" She whispered back, completely panicked as she realized they were not prepared in the slightest to bring their A game of support.
"I suggest perhaps taking one of those human spell casters on the wall of rink to aid in our presentation."
Luz straightened immediately, a mischievous and wonderful twinkle in her eye.
The flamethrowers sounded like an excellent idea. She went to say as much to Gus before she felt her hoodie being pulled back. She lost her balance and fell, right into Amity's waiting arms. The witch was looking down at her disapprovingly.
"Not so fast Chaos. We won't need any big banners or flags and we most certainly aren't going to steal any flamethrowers."
"We weren't going to steal them... just...borrow them." Gus grumbled unhappily as he crossed his arms and joined Luz in pouting.
Camila sighed, crossing her arms in front of the doorway.
"I heard the words stealing and flamethrower. Am I going to have stay here tonight to watch you kids?" Camila asked plainly, looking more and more tired by the second.
Before anyone could respond, a pale hand flew through the portal attached at the bone by a string of rope.
"Oh no, you're not getting out of parents night that easily Cam." Eda's voice chuckled as the line pulled tight and Camila was dragged through too suddenly to protest.
The door closed seconds after Luz's mother disappeared and all 4 kids were left in the silence and dark.
Luz clapped her hands together, jolting everyone to attention. A smile spread across her face.
"So... I'm thinking maybe a heist movie tonight. Anyone else?"

"What happened at the rink today Luz?"
Luz melted onto the counter as she deflated. There was a part of her body that still tensed in anger but as the night went on, all she found she could do was worry. By the time Willow dragged her into the kitchen to 'restock' Luz had been wound so tightly in concern that her body now physically ached.
Amity was an expert at hiding her emotions, but not from her friends. Not from her girlfriend. The tight grip Amity kept on the pillow she clutched in her arms. The way Luz could feel the witch's body winding up and tensing as each new thought entered her mind, even during times of lull in the movie. Amity was even quieter then normal, unable to find the heart to point out the obvious plot holes in the various cheesy movies they watched.
Luz knew her girlfriend was not normally one to remain silent when she could see right through the twist of the movie.
Luz lifted her head and blinked. The light in the kitchen was bright and warm compared to the dark nest of blankets and pillows the kids had set up. Although dim, it helped Luz relax a little more. In the silence left behind by the question, Willow unwrapped the package for the next round of popcorn before she set the timer. The human knew Willow would wait all night if she had too.
"There's apparently this thing called Celebration Night. It's a way for the team and their family to celebrate their accomplishments before the finals." Luz sighed as she finally explained.
Willow's mouth thinned into a straight line.
It wasn't a question.
"I… I already was pretty tense and I know Amity was too. It came out of nowhere but how were we supposed to know, you know?! Lokte already kinda knows our weird little family situation as it is so they didn't think to mention it."
"They don't know is what you're saying." Willow explained curtly, her mouth twisting into a frown. "Why Amity is living with you."
"Which is fine. That's something only Amity can share and only when she wants to, IF she wants to. But that also means that nobody else on the team knows either."
Willow stared at her friend as Luz propped herself up onto her elbows, her hands clenching into tight fists.
They must really be something to raise someone like you.
Luz felt sick. Odalia and Alador Blight had never done anything for Amity. They weren't the reason she became so incredible. That was the furthest thing from the truth. They were despicable. Awful. Manipulative, selfish…
Abusive.
Luz slammed her fist onto the counter.
"It's just that… ugh!" Luz groaned as her fist hit the counter once again. "Why can't they just leave her alone?! Why do they have to exist, out there… still making her suffer?" The defeat in Luz's voice choked her anger into what was merely a whisper.
"Hey. Here I thought parental angst was supposed to be my thing." Amity's voice drifted softly through the room following Luz's outburst.
Immediately both girls turned to greet Amity, lounging in the door way. Her amber eyes were tired and there was a small smile showing on her face. Luz straightened.
"Amity-" Luz started before her girlfriend gently waved her hand to interrupt her.
"It's ok Luz. I think…"
Taking a deep breath, Amity bit her lip. Her breath rattled in her chest as she went to speak next, her eyes locking onto a specific spot on the ground in front of her.
"I think I want to reach out to them."
