Hi there. I enjoyed your post about Sam’s brand and it got me thinking. I feel like he’s stuck between trying to do what other people tell him he should to “make it” and trying to do it himself. Other people: you’re hot, show it off, do action movies, date blonde floozies. Himself: I want to be a good person and a decent actor, but what if I’m not? Guess I should work a lot, build a non-acting brand just in case I get fired, but try not to pay too many people to market it, I can do that myself; the liquor has the added benefit of getting his name out there and hopefully giving him another income stream if acting goes to shit. Where this all becomes problematic is that he’s not the person others tell him to be, so he comes off as fake, inconsistent, disingenuous, contradictory. I worry though that he can’t break away from these “advisors” because of whatever hole he and caitriona have themselves in with Starz and their bosses. We may not all agree on what happened in 2016 or why, but it’s obvious something did. The difference between them both since then is stark. The light has dimmed. They’ve aged exponentially. They’re guarded. They’re not the effervescent dynamos they started out as. She looks pissed all the time, like she’ll trot Tony out if necessary, but she won’t look like she enjoys it. She’ll go to awards ceremonies, but she won’t look as gorgeous as she easily could. She won’t be their ingenue. I don’t know, I think they’re stuck and are limited in what they can actually do for themselves, as much as they might like to. I can only hope there is an end in sight for them and they can persevere until then!

PS, I watched She Said last night. Highly recommend for anyone who doesn’t think a network executive could or would force their tent pole stars to deny a relationship.

You can't figure out more opposite add-ons to Those Two, both serving, I believe, the same purpose: to deflect, at all costs, any attention given to the real state of play.

I haven't watched She Said yet and I welcome and thank you for the suggestion. On a lighter note, I trade for it Call My Agent (I have already mentioned this very, very witty French series, dealing with the life in a Parisian talent agency) - it shouldn't be a problem to find it on Netflix.

So I just read the demo for the first time and… are you okay? Like do you need to talk to someone? Cuz holy shit, that was depressing. Don’t get me wrong, it was great, but I am just mentally, emotionally, and physically drained now (don’t ask me about that last part). All in all, I really enjoyed it, but I do have some thoughts.

Firstly, I don’t understand how anyone from Rosea (except for Hunter, Fadiya and her mom, and maybe Helios) has any fans. Like did they just forget that everyone else (including Lancelot) contributed to the total destruction of our family? Everyone’s over here shipping Lancelot and Luceris, and to be fair, if this was a different story I would too, but like… they’re the enemy? Speaking of Luceris…

Dude is on some shit. Like I get it’s the point, but everything about our relationship with him just feels weird and wrong, and I’m counting the days til we can kill him. Until then, I guess I’ll have to make do with disrespecting the memory of his dead wife at every opportunity. Also side note, but as a Straight Male tm it does feel a little weird having to fake a romance with another guy, especially a guy that’s like fifty years older than me lol (Luceris really isn’t beating the Catholic Priest allegations)

The rest of the cast are a lot of fun, and I’m glad they all at least have sympathy towards MC. I think Hunter is the coolest character ever and I want to be them, and Fadiya can do no wrong in my eyes. Vincent sucks, but I haven’t really spent much time with him so maybe that’ll change. Helios I feel sorry for. He’s a nice guy and I do like him a lot, but he’s unfortunately collateral damage in my crusade against Father Luceris. I hate that we have to hurt him to get revenge, but it feels very realistic and gives your decisions a lot more weight.

On the flip side, Soarine is perfect and has never done anything wrong in her life ever. If Soarine has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Soarine has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Soarine has only one fan then that is me. If Soarine has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Soarine, then I am against the world.

All in all, I love what you’re doing with this game, even if I do have to take a twenty minute break after each playthrough just to decompress lol. I can’t wait to see where this goes and am gonna stare at a wall until the next update drops. Thanks for making such an interesting story and give Soarine my love 💚

I don’t ship things. But I’m getting pissed as hell when I see people saying that Huntlow was forced.

Like. No? Sure it had less build up than Amity and Luz but that’s just because Luz is the main character. Not to mention the show was being cancelled and they literally had less time to do it all. Rant under the cut.

I personally could not give a shit if Hunter and Willow became an item or just stayed friends. That show already has strong friendships like Luz, Gus, Willow friendship and Gus and Hunter and etc. and I never need more romance. But as far as writing romance into the plot the Owl House did a perfectly fine job with Willow and Hunter.

When they first meet, Willow, who has been working hard on her own self confidence, basically corners Hunter and forces him to do something fun with kids his own age.

This is where we see the parallels to them, because they’ve both struggled with performance and rejection. They’ve both been called “half a witch” and Hunter is way further back on the road to acceptance.

Hunter let’s them all go, and he addresses Willow specifically.

Then we have just small stuff. Hunter going out of his way to save Willow during a fight, when Hunter gets filled with bad memories while saving Gus one of them is when he made Willow upset. Hunters memory of that one meeting with Willow is so attuned to her he knows fake willow is an illusion immediately. When Willow thinks Hunter’s been captured she’s the first one to race to the airship and angrily starts snapping about how do you turn it on. Once they realize it’s Luz who is actually captured, Amity is the one snapping about going faster, meanwhile Willow is sitting in the back with King. There’s a clear parallel there.

And then season three happens. Hunter wears a stupid outfit and Willow fucking loves it. She legit tells him to save it for later and then winks at him, in which he blushes hard. I didn’t bring up any blushing before this, bc as far as I’m concerned this is the only one that matters. Then episode two is the first time we see Willow being the one who’s about to lose it. Bc she’s had such an excellent character arc so far that she’s become this capable and calm headed leader. And Hunter hears her refer to herself as half a witch. And it literally drives him to tears.

Look. I am literally the last person who would say “they can’t be platonic look how much they mean to each other” bc I literally want to kill people who say that. But as far as storytelling goes they did their due diligence with Hunter and Willow. They put in the work just fine. Especially with the half a witch parallel. With limited episodes where neither of them are a main character they gave us plenty of hints about what’s coming while also letting us see Hunter’s friendship with Gus as being just as important of a relationship!

I don’t know if people are confused at the m/f ship that doesn’t bow to any gender roles or common straight couple troupes or… they’re upset that it’s a m/f ship in general? I mean we have no proof they’re both straight and even if they are who cares it’s still a gay show. With huntlow that makes two straight couples, one of whom is getting a nasty divorce. So.

Or maybe people are upset that the cute little elf boy with depression fell for the plus sized Asian girl before she even really noticed him? Although I shouldn’t just assume the worst.

Like. To put it another way. If I saw it coming, the aroace who legit is surprised by almost every bit of romance in media, then it was not out of nowhere. It’s a legit relationship they spent time on, and if you were blindsided by it maybe there’s some underlying reason why you didn’t expect them to be in a relationship?

Thoughts on S3 E2

(SPOILERS ahead)

There might be positives, there will be negatives, so please be forewarned that I am not going to solely praise the show. Also, it needs not be mentioned, I am but a single negative person on the internet talking about a fictional story. We are all not going to agree. With that said, let’s move on.

Episode 2-

They really did their thing saying diamonds aren’t the only things that sparkle and then cutting to Eloise. 

How fake can a person get? Actively listening to your crush plan the downfall of your alter ego. Penelope girl.

This scene just further proves that Colin and Penelope were never that great of friends. Why would Colin ask to see how she acts out in public if they were already friends? He should already know that. I also don’t see why he’s acting as though he doesn’t already know how “awkward” she is, anybody can see it. Then again when is he ever home to see it?

“Not me. Them.” Penelope, dearest, I beg of you find a man who actually wants you. He yet again practically threw it in her face that he doesn’t want her. How much rejection can she take?

On another note, I love how they’re doing Penelope’s hair. At least she’s leveling up in one way or another.

I love the fact that lady Danbury is gossiping as usual.

Portia’s disappointment at the lack of an heir is enjoyable. Hopefully they’ll continue with this storyline.

I thought that Benedict was going to be the cliche “lady’s man” but it appears that Colin has his way with women as well. Not as if we could have possibly known this sooner because what have we learned of him up until this point.

I actually agree with what Colin is saying about societal expectations. With new people, you get the chance to rediscover yourself. Even just the jump from, let's say, high school to college, I think you may change because you’re free to reinvent yourself. However, if I’m thinking correctly, this is not his first adventure. Correct? So, what about this trip in particular made him so “different”.

Why did Penelope think she was so sly saying “before we are noticed”? For an area so enthralled with gossip, no one else is noticing that Colin and Penelope are spending more time together and walking side by side. We haven’t seen them in a public area holding even a fraction of a true friendly conversation but now that they are no one bats an eye.

Colin is finally interacting with his siblings but ditches them the moment someone else arrives.

How tone deaf can Colin get? Penelope all but proclaimed her love for him to the rooftops but his first idea is to have her “pretend” to flirt with him. Even worse, I don’t think he’s doing this with malice, but at the same time it’s sending me into a rage. 

Since when does Penelope Featherington say “nothing at all”? Yeah right.

Ugh, this clip! Your eyes are the most remarkable shade of blue… girl, she’s a writer. I’m sure they could have come up with something better for her to say than some chatgpt poetry line. The second hand embarrassment, and as usual Colin wasn’t for her advances.

Colin should have known better than to bring Penelope to the house. I know he claims that Eloise was out but it is their house after all. He apparently had no clue what time they’d be back and was just hoping for the best.

Give me strength! Why does Penelope keep on digging further into Colins business? She never likes what she finds. Her reading Colin’s writing is not only a breach of privacy to the man she claims to want but also only serves as yet another way to humiliate herself. How much longer can this go on? The man honestly doesn’t want her but she still subjects herself to such torment.

I literally started laughing out loud when Colin found her reading! Oh my gosh! The strife!

Another nitpick, I feel like there was way too much blood on Colin’s hand for that small piece of glass. Then that loose tie Penelope put around it probably wouldn’t stop the bleeding. But I’m sure no one else cares about that, so I won’t go any further. 

 Colin knows that Penelope and Eloise don’t want to see each other and that should really be enough. Him trying to act oblivious and say he doesn’t know what happened is irrelevant to the situation. Penelope didn’t want to stay in the house, Eloise doesn’t want her there so why is Colin trying to instigate.

He was quick to shut down Eloise at the mere thought of Penelope seeking him as a husband. At times I feel like Colin doesn’t like her at all much less as a romantic interest. When you’re friends with someone there are obviously certain things you like about them, maybe even things you would seek in a partner. However, Colin seems repulsed at the thought of Penelope. Even when he’s trying to “help her” he doesn’t seem that excited. He acts like they are but acquaintances. On another note, I feel like his voice is so monotone, but that's neither here nor there I suppose.

I feel like Penelope has had more positive chemistry with Lord Remington in this one scene than I have seen with her and Colin this entire time.

Why does Colin automatically assume Eloise told everyone about him “helping” Penelope. They weren’t exactly making it hard to see that they had been talking more than usual. I don’t know why he is blindly taking Penelope’s side. He has no idea what's going on and you’d think he’d hold some sort of solidarity with his sister. I feel absolutely no sympathy for Penelope, girl go ahead and cry. She should have ditched Colin, she knew this was a bad idea from the start. 

Although I like Eloise, Cressida lowkey told her what she needed to hear. Yet again a Bridgerton jumping to conclusions. Both Eloise and Penelope are hypocritical for commenting on Cressida’s tendency to gossip when it appears that’s all they do. 

…never before have I felt this close to being on the brink of insanity. PENELOPE! I wish she’d understand that you cannot simply do the same thing over and over. How many more ways can one profess their unrequited love before they move on? You know what her claiming she doesn’t want to die before being kissed gives me the vibes of? Exes that say if you leave me, I’ll die or I’ll harm myself. That is absolutely so manipulative. Time and time again Colin has shown no interest in her that she has had to resort to the possibility of hypothetical death. I’m surprised this hasn’t been more cause of contention. This kiss means absolutely nothing. If anything it is discrediting any sort of “cute friends to lovers” storyline that could have been. This is nothing more than a guilt trip.

you two are in separate beds, but neither of you can sleep, so you two do what any pair of roommates would do—

first actual convo with nocti, you both take turns to ask questions about why they’re here, what’s going on, etc

nocti asks why you trust him so easily, you respond with “it’s intuition” which is a response nocti seemed to like

you also state how you hope he returns to cerberus and fall asleep. nocti in a way states he also wishes to go back to cerberus and sleeps as well

at some point nocti leaves the hotel room to find demont, who is the reason you two ended up working together in the first place, but there was an attack by hetero creatures and nocti swiftly got rid of them

after talking to the mayor, max, about wanting to be just a resident in town, he takes you to a bar, in which that’s where you find nocti

ya know he could’ve talked about ANYTHING and his drunk ass decided to talk about HOW HE PROTECTED YOU??? COINCIDENCE??? I THINK NOT

you find nocti and he offers his hand out to you to dance with him, you reluctantly agreed and you two end up break dancing together

when he first calls you partner, it was originally solely because temporarily they’re no longer considered members of babylonia, and so to fit in with the whole wild west type style, nocti refers to you as “partner” and you agree to do the same to him

first time it’s used outside your interaction with him was when nocti has small talk with vann

vann: you’ll only obey orders from that commandant, right? these are the rules of the sky garden

nocti: i don’t listen to anyone’s orders, but if it’s a request from my partner, that’s a different matter

calming him down and telling him to retreat to not make a big scene was practically impossible, that is till you shout “trust me— partner!!” and nocti finally calms down and retreats

your part was to just do your job as a bartender while nocti handles the investigating, and eventually nigel shows up

nigel asks what’s the difference between a human and a construct, you respond in a way a bartender would explain it, but nigel wants an answer from you as a commandant rather than a bartender

he ends up poisoning you and leaves, nocti arrives a little while later after discovering what the plan is for this town in the next few days

i remembered that before we split up i told him not to be reckless, but in the end i was the one that was careless and ended up in this miserable condition. i no longer had the strength to stand, so i could only slide down to the edge of the bar. at the beginning, i said big words that would make nocti return to cerberus in an honored manner… i didn’t expect to be the one to make him sad for his companions

nocti: HEY! don’t say such depressing things to me so quickly

nocti then enters a panicked state of not knowing what to do cause skk is poisoned and there's no known cure for it

he hears a painful scream in his communication device and he SPRINTS back to where you are and finds both vera and 21 there attempting to take care of you

there’s an encounter with the purifying force, wanting nocti dead since they believe he’s the cause of their aircraft crashing

you tell them that it isn’t his fault and after essentially a stare down between the purifying force and cerberus, the purifying force leaves you all alone since they trust you (thank the overlords for you working with them before and gaining a good work relationship)

you, cerberus, max, and vann think of a plan on what to do next now that you all know where nigel might be located

nocti will go and fight nigel alone since it’s the reason he even came here in the first place while the rest defend the town

you establish a m.i.n.d. connection with nocti, which in turn gives him the poison as well since you’re basically almost a walking corpse at this point

the fact that nocti, with NO hesitation, established a connection with you makes it LOUD AND CLEAR that he will stick with you no matter what even if it leads to his death

cue another hand holding scene, and nocti leaves

vera and 21 get very VERY concerned over your health, yet you’re still adamant about keeping the connection with nocti

21: they want to keep a deep m.i.n.d connection w nocti

vera: DO YOU WANT TO DIE?! if you're deeply connected, your consciousness will be completely bound to him…. if he dies, you also die

skk: he… needs….. me…..

this is LITERALLY a moment where one cares more about their partner THAN THEIR OWN WELL-BEING ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

transitioning over to nocti’s side, he finally confronts nigel

nigel mentions that in order to cure the commandant he needs to be killed, but just HEARING that name come out of his mouth made nocti more full of rage than he’s ever had

this part alone SCREAMED nocti being like "you do NOT have the right to say my partner's name after what you did to them, i am no longer doing this for myself, i'm doing this FOR THEM"

so anyways nocti gets his ass beat 💀💀, nigel lecturing him that he’s still confused and is only driven by anger

this whole fight scene had me SCREAMING

he gives his own answer and guesses yours (since he was rather confident enough with knowing a lot on how you think) and it boils down to them having the same answer but different font

the place nocti and nigel were fighting in collapses, forcing nocti to leave and never see nigel again

you and nocti are back in the hotel room recovering, and a few locals come in to beg nocti to stay and not go back to babylonia

“but i made a promise with my partner, i want to return to cerberus in a dignified manner…”

after more silly banter everyone leaves you and nocti alone to rest, but neither of you can sleep

nocti brings up the question nigel asked him, and you gave him your actual answer, which is pretty close to what he guessed

Maybe She's Not Such a Heinous Bitch After All

It was inevitable this season that without Ben, Klaus either had to learn independence, get another enabler, or find another abuser.  Now we know.

A lot of people look at an abusive situation and ask, “Why don’t they just leave?”

Well, The Umbrella Academy just showed you exactly why.  Steve Blackman et al. revealed that the same mechanism that keeps people with their abusers actually exists in you.  You went through the thought process with Klaus this season, wondering whether this Reginald is actually different, and while you probably didn’t reach full faith in him, you did doubt he’s all that bad.  We’re told that bad people only do bad things and good people only do good things, but never in human history has this been true.  You may write someone off because they’re a terrible person, but then they show a side that brings you close again—they’re a generous lover, or they buy you a present, or they take you to a playground and spend quality one-on-one time with you.  They seem self-aware, like they know exactly what they did to you and they’re sorry now.  But then, the abuse comes back around.  They’ve just managed to be nice enough to you that they can keep you on the hook.  That’s all they were doing.  And you’re never quite as immune to this as you think.  If you grew up in this sort of environment, it’s entirely likely you’ve pretty much lost the ability to see it coming. The warning signs just look like normal behavior to you.

Privately, to myself, I call this the “Heinous Bitch” phenomenon, after the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song “Maybe She’s Not Such a Heinous Bitch After All” (which is brilliantly done in a 60’s girl group style, go listen to it).  It’s a song sung when the main character’s emotionally abusive mother starts being oddly nice to her, and having the relationship with her that she always dreamed of.  Many people go through this stage periodically with their abuser, and the relationship between Reginald and Klaus this season perfectly illustrated how it happens.  Hell, a lot of Klaus’ dialogue is eerily reminiscent of some of the most clichéd things victims say about their abuser during this stage—saying his father is different now (though in this case it’s literal), encouraging other people to give him a chance, all that.  But it ends like it nearly always ends in these situations: a return to the norm once the abuser feels like they no longer benefit from being nice.

This may not be the Reg of Klaus’ timeline, but Reg is still Reg, and knows himself so well he can pick the game up right where his other self left off.  He can tell Klaus is, at his core, a deeply empathetic person who is so desperate to refill all the scoops that have been taken out of him that he’s the most vulnerable target.  Fei foreshadowed this in the first episode by calling him the weakest link.

Do I think 100% of the kindness we saw from Reg towards Klaus was faked?  Not really.  I think there is something about Klaus that Reg came to like.  I think he has some genuine warmth toward Klaus, but it doesn’t go very deep.  I got a touch of regret out of Colm’s performance as he was leaving Klaus to die.  Others might disagree.  But he didn’t have to say the things he said.  He could have just shut Klaus out with no explanation, if he truly didn’t feel any kind of way about him.  Instead, he gives him an explanation and an apology.  The explanation is utterly, needlessly cruel, and the apology means nothing because he then proceeds to do the thing he’s apologizing for even as Klaus begs him not to.  Still.  In that moment, I think Reg was being honest—both about his poor opinion of Klaus, and about his regret for what he was going to do.  Otherwise, what good would it do to tear him down one last time?  Reg is slightly fond of Klaus, but he loves Abigail, and has chosen not to risk taking Klaus along the path towards her, despite that fondness.

And it’s bad.  It’s very, very bad.  In some ways, you could see it as being worse than Reg treating him with only cruelty.  Reg shows he is capable of cognitive empathy (an ability to imagine how someone must be feeling based on their circumstances, which is the kind of empathy ND people often struggle with), and when that’s the case, it can be forgiven if one believes he is also capable of emotional empathy (responding to someone else’s emotions with the same or similar emotion).  I think Klaus believed Reg finally understood him, and in a way, he was right.  Reg understands Klaus like he understands a puzzle he put together.  But understanding the damage his alternate self caused Klaus doesn’t mean he has had any emotional response to it, any compassion for him.  He knows exactly how Klaus is going to take his words, and says them anyway when it would have been kinder to simply shut the door and say nothing.

Klaus has seen that his father knows exactly what he did to him in the past (because he told him in the graveyard scene), feels like he has finally gotten some healing from it, and then been told he was worthless all along.  Finally, he is shoved to the floor as he reaches for Reginald.  That’s an angst dumpster fire that’s going to keep Klaus fans warm for a long time.

And Klaus’ reaction to it is immediate.  Once he makes it to the Void, he gives up.  He tells Luther it’s because he (Klaus) is always messing up, so it’s better for him to just stay out of everything and relax.  The way I take this, it means that Klaus is blaming himself for Reg’s betrayal because he fell for his manipulations.  Victims often let their abusers off the hook because they have accepted that they won’t change—they can, but it’s not a realistic expectation to have.  Luther was the perfect person to see Klaus through this because he knows the Heinous Bitch cycle so intimately, and won’t stand for Klaus wallowing in self-pity. I kind of think he must have told himself the kinds of things he tells Klaus here, to break himself out of his own funk.

This is how the same people get in abusive relationships over and over again. It’s how abused people stay with their abusive partners.  It’s the ultimate trick of an abuser—not terror, but kindness.  And it is cruel.

I had to laugh and I thought if you bc it’s so true. Most Jasper content isn’t even that enjoyable. It’s mostly the same boring white-supremacist garbage that I’ve seen before; even the jalice stuff is played out.

The only J*sper content I enjoy is content where he is worshipping Maria, thinking about Maria, talking about Maria, loving Maria, doing anything for Maria tbh. Is that bad? XD I owe it to you and your writing! idk something about a 19/20 year old dumbass confederate falling madly in love with a native brown woman and literally seeing her as a god-like figure as she’s basically handing him his karma for his racist crimes sends me. Ppl act like he was this awesome person before Maria and that it’s her fault he’s gutter trash now with the C*llens but he was gutter trash BEFORE he met Maria. She honestly made him so much better, stronger and MUCH more interesting. She literally created the man these stans thirst over so much. She is the blueprint.

the thing anti-María Jalice stans don't get is, without María, you do not have Jasper. for everything Jasper is, María is the catalyst ❤️

canonically, all we know about Jasper Hale pre-change is 1) he was born in Texas, 2) faked his age to join the Confederate Army* where he became the youngest major in Texas, & 3) was persuasive

beyond that, María made Jasper into the man the fandom adores. you like that he's an empath? guess whose venom made him one. you like that he's a warmonger? guess whose war he fought for. you like that he has a troubled past? guess who put the trouble in it. you like that he's "soft" "empath" "baby" (tbh i don't see it but ok)? guess who made him want to be that way. you like that he's submissive to Alice? guess who broke him in first.

you want Jasper with Alice but wish the María era didn't exist? lol just say you want the hot faceless Confederate to get with the psychic Mississippian & go

as for me, MARÍA ALL DAY BAYBEEEEE

here we have a woman who has suffered all her life at the hands of colonizers. born "1800s or earlier," we can suppose she has firsthand experience with colonization (at least Napoleon's invasion) & lived through Mexico's War of Independence. i.e., she has a deep familiarity with what it means to have your way of life ripped from you by invaders. PLUS she was a victim of Benito's army in the Southern Vampire Wars; her entire coven including her mate was killed.

& despite her losses, she rallied to take back her land & drive out her oppressors. baseline, she is a strong, cunning, powerful indigenous woman with a deep love for her community and her people. HOT

now let's look at Jasper, a bright leader in the Civil War who suffered defeat at the hands of the Union army. yes, María changed him. but did she force him to stay? to go to war? the newborn vamp with the strength & speed to overcome a "grown" vamp chose not to do so. the empath with the power to make anyone disregard him chose not to use it. some say María was "abusive" & "manipulative," but few acknowledge that Jasper had a choice.

why didn't Jasper leave? because he's submissive to anyone more powerful than him. because he was a loser. because the Southern Vampire Wars gave him a second chance at victory. because "empath" or no, he wanted to play war & win.

that's what's compelling about Jasper/María. as wrong as Jasper was for fighting for the Confederacy, he believed he was fighting for the same thing as she. he saw his way of life destroyed by "invaders" & fought back. it's a sick & twisted parallel between oppressor & oppressed that becomes subverted as their relationship goes on... & one that can heal them both.

María's experience with colonizers gives her a visceral picture of what it means to be oppressed... but her relationship with Jasper gives her the victory & emotional reflection she needs to move on. Jasper's military training gives him the hunger & knowledge for war... but his "curse" of empathy provides him with the tools he needs to recognize & address the horrors of his problematic past & move on.

tbh, i find Jasper & María are perfectly suited for a delicious character-driven narrative. Maria's story is that of a traumatized indigenous woman on a path from colonization to decolonization, & the sacrifices & destruction she endures realize that vision. Jasper's story is that of a troubled man on the path from self-hate to self-love, & what it means to undo the societal teachings/traumas & forge a life of empathy & forgiveness.

& that is something Alice alone can never give Jasper.

I Read Dobbs So You Wouldn’t Have To

Alright, so Dobbs.

Oh, boy, history and tradition! Here we go again! Buckle up!

The thing is, though, this majority opinion is…absolutely boring. All it does – literally all it does – is talk about whether abortion was legal in 1868. That’s it. It’s incredibly lazy as a majority opinion. It does have this whole analysis justifying ignoring stare decisis but it’s so wrong – so wrong -- that the dissent contains an actual appendix rebutting each of the cases relied upon in detail. In addition to doing it in a briefer form within the dissent itself.

The dissent is absolutely beautiful and I’m basically going to quote all of it, but first, the majority opinion. As I said, it’s basically like, “Abortion wasn’t legal in 1868 so there is no right to abortion.” Now the reason I feel like I don’t have much to say about this is: honestly, no one’s actually talking about a “right to abortion.” And every time the majority characterizes it that way, it’s so disingenuous that it’s not even worth engaging with it. Literally no one is asking for the Constitution to have a “right to abortion.” What Roe and Casey said was that the Constitution established a right to personal freedom that encompassed, among many other things, a right to choose when and how to procreate. And I think many of us would have said that a right to personal freedom was guaranteed by our Constitution.

WRONG. This court tells you that the idea that the U.S. Constitution guarantees the people of the United States of America “liberty” is controversial. Yup. You thought the Pledge of Allegiance said “liberty and justice for all?” SUCKER! “Liberty” is super-controversial, didn’t you know!

When interpreting the Constitution, you see, you have to be careful not to be influenced by what contemporary people might think “liberty” is. You see, we’re only allowed to have as much liberty as the old white guys wanted to give us in 1868. (The relevant date this time around is 1868, because that’s when the Fourteenth Amendment was passed, and the Fourteenth Amendment is the amendment of the Constitution guaranteeing us “liberty.” Only, not, like, LIBERTY liberty, don’t get crazy, only, like, some random fake historical definition of liberty.)

This is literally the exact reason the authors of the Constitution did not want to enumerate any rights and initially drafted it without any contained in it: because they were worried that future generations would think any rights not mentioned wouldn’t be recognized as rights. LITERALLY, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE FOUNDING FATHERS WERE WORRIED ABOUT. That’s why the rights were added later, after the document was done. Our rights aren’t in the Constitution, they’re in the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. And you know why they were stuck there instead of the document itself? EXACTLY BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO DRAFTED THE CONSTITUTION WERE WORRIED THAT WRITING THEM DOWN WOULD GIVE FUTURE PEOPLE AN ARGUMENT TO LIMIT THEM. So you know what, conservative, originalist justices? Just stop. Because that history you pretend to be obsessed with would tell you not to do EXACTLY THIS.

(Here is a source on this: Although there is much dispute among constitutional scholars about the meaning and legal effect of the Ninth Amendment, there is consensus about its origin. During the ratification debates over the Constitution, some opponents of ratification (“Anti-Federalists”) vociferously complained about the absence of a bill of rights. You’d think that would be the end of the debate, wouldn’t you?

The Ninth Amendment is, in fact, one of the amendments used to justify the right to privacy, bodily autonomy, and freedom in personal decisions found in Roe, Casey, and any number of other cases (interracial marriage, contraception, same-sex intimacy and marriage, etc.). The majority opinion mentions that the Ninth Amendment is cited by Roe and Casey – and then never brings it up again. It is never once mentioned, in the very long search (and failure to locate) a right to abortion in the Constitution, that IT DOESN’T MATTER, PER THE ACTUAL WORDS OF THE ACTUAL UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. But no. Instead the Court says this:

Note that there is no citation to the pronouncement that people have to prove a right is in the Constitution in order to have a right. Ordinarily, in a legal opinion, every sentence has a cite. To not have a cite here is pretty telling. They’re just making this stuff up.

So anyway, Dobbs’s holding is that there is no Constitutional right to abortion and that means that states can prohibit abortion as long as they have a reason for it. This is called rational basis review (this is one of those layers of review that the Court said we couldn’t use for gun control laws in Bruen, incidentally) and it is incredibly easy to survive, you basically just give any reason at all and you’re golden in rational basis review.

For real, the fact that this Court, with a straight face, decided Bruen and Dobbs in the same week is actually insulting. But don’t worry, Breyer’s dissent will get to that.

The majority opinion paints this parade of horribles that might result if we just hand out rights pell-mell and I find it hilarious:

Anyway, the pro-choice advocates try to make actual legal arguments about all of this. Like, they try to say stuff other than “In the Middle Ages, you couldn’t poison a woman whose womb had quickened.” But the majority opinion doesn’t even do them the favor of engaging with the arguments.

Like, they try to argue that abortion regulation impacts women disproportionately and thus is sex-based discrimination, and in an entire opinion dedicated to justifying why precedents don’t matter, the Court dismisses that argument by saying that some precedents do matter and so abortion can’t be discrimination and that’s it, one sentence, done.

::looks into the camera like I’m on The Office:: This is such a vitally important point, and that’s how the Court keeps dealing with: “You’re wrong, it’s not discrimination. Moving on.”

The majority opinion, in both this case and Bruen, is constantly like, “Why does the dissent keep talking about real life?!” Or, more accurately, “Why does the dissent keep bringing statistics into it?” But the statistics are, of course, real life. The dissent’s litany of gun violence statistics in Bruen is, of course, relevant to the whole fear and terror point. And the dissent’s discussion of the impact of the right to choose on the lives of woman, measured through statistics, is, of course, about exactly this argument the majority opinion keeps summarily dismissing: Abortion regulations are a discriminatory issue. The dissent devotes tons of time to proving this. The majority opinion says, “Ugh, why is the dissent talking about ~~women so much? They’re such a drag.” (The dissent calls them out on this: “The most striking feature of the majority is the absence of any serious discussion of how its ruling will affect women….[I]t reveals how little it knows or cares about women’s lives or about the suffering its decision will cause.”)

Instead, the majority opinion notes what the dissent doesn’t do:

All that time wasted on talking about women! Why isn’t the dissent talking about quickening laws in 1868?! Why is the dissent missing the point that it’s the quickening laws of 1868 that matter here?! Does the dissent think the current living women matter?!?! Pshaw!

I should stop being amazed by how intensely comfortable conservatives are with hypocrisy. The most solid rule of thumb in the world is that whatever a Republican accuses you of is what they are definitely guilty of themselves. Again, the dissent doesn’t let them get away with this, either, and notes that, at the first possible moment, as soon as they gained a majority, the conservative justices started overturning court decisions. Talk about policy preferences. The opinion keeps talking about how the “right to abortion” is nothing but a “policy goal,” and I don’t understand why that’s said like a dirty word. It’s a “policy goal” to seek equality. So? Owning your policy goal is way more straightforward than pretending you don’t have one and you’re just talking to Thomas Jefferson’s ghost.

Okay, but like, here is where originalism breaks down again: The Constitution has no right to abortion, but where does the Constitution mention “potential life”? Why does potential life have any rights at all? At least women are mentioned in some amendments. “Potential life” is never mentioned. So where is the Constitutional justification to pay attention to “potential life”?

The majority keeps saying that it doesn’t make sense for Roe and Casey to have drawn the line at viability, and that’s the problem with Roe and Casey. Basically: “Why viability? Makes no sense. Stupid idea.” I mean, it is so self-evident and obvious why Roe and Casey decided that the rights of a fetus didn’t come into play until it was viable that to be running around being like, WHAT NONSENSE, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND THIS COMPLETELY ARBITRARY THING THE COURT DID doesn’t even deserve a response – and the dissent doesn’t give it one lol

The Thomas Concurrence is a nightmare of how we should just get rid of all rights, so there’s that.

The Roberts Concurrence actually does not overturn Roe. It defines the right as “the right to choose” rather than the right to an abortion and does defend it, although it’s a Concurrence because it agrees that the Mississippi law wasn’t automatically unconstitutional. It does not, however, think Roe should be overturned and is fairly cogent on that point. The dissent gives the Roberts Concurrence some respect for that.

Now. As for the dissent. It’s so good. It’s SO GOOD. So mostly what I’m going to do is just let it speak for itself, because it’s just so good:

Let’s talk: The Rumor

Hi guys, again, Admin 2 here. 

We got a lot of questions, nice and less nice ones, about the Tae dating rumor and its connection to Vmin. Just based on the questions and the tone they’re written in, this whole gotcha atmosphere they all have about how “ha! didn’t we tell you vmin is bullshit because Tae is straight”, you can conclude how many people would love for this rumor to be true because it would perfectly fit into their agendas. 

That’s why I won’t get too deeply into it or deeply philosophize about the pictures and whether or not it’s possible or not, and instead under the absence of the more soft spoken admin 1, I will simply write what I think. While highlighting that this is just my opinion and no one is forced to believe it or even agree with it. 

Let’s start with what I’ve mentioned before, the fact that I’m someone working in graphic design and therefore know what editing and falsifications possibilities different programs give you. And I have to admit that the pictures are, already upon first glance, so obviously fake so I was surprised why people actually even just for a moment thought they’re real. 

Secondly, I won’t beat around the bush and simply say that I think that, with such naively, immaturely, and badly made pictures and the narratives being spun around them, I doubt any agency or person with proper money stands behind this because if they did, they would hire someone who would edit these pictures in a way that would make them undoubtedly real looking with no room for arguments. 

Therefore, as someone who likes to look around all corners of social media, like I’ve mentioned before, I think that this whole thing about Tae and Jennie is simply a creation of rivaling shippers, especially J/*k/*ok ones. And I know many people will get very offended by this statement, but I’ve seen a lot of people who, to say it carefully, go to extreme lengths in their delulu and their sick obsession, and it’s exactly those kind of people that are the ones pushing this the most since they very much want Tae to be straight and with someone, literally anyone, other than Jimin. They see him as too big of a threat so they’re trying to push him onto someone else because if he’s out of the picture their ship can happily exist and they will get their gotcha moment against other maknae line shippers which they’ve waited almost a decade for. 

Because of all that, along with the statement HYBE posted, I don’t see any reason to further think, analyze, talk or interact with this false rumor at all. If any of this were true, I think Tae would be more likely to say something or give a solid hint, even if only out of respect toward his partner and his feelings for them (instead of making a shocked weverse post about how scary IG is after accidentally following their now supposed partner there, or wearing a Your Dog Isn’t My Dog shirt). 

Why do people constantly ask for a HYBE statement (one exactly phrased and written the way they demand it to be because no other one is valid in their opinion)? Why should HYBE make a statement about dumb shipper rumors, after all K-Pop lives based on those, and these Tae x Jennie rumors, theories and edits have existed for years, just like JK x Lisa or Rose ones or Jin x Jisoo ones, as examples. Besides if this rumor really were to cause harm to someone (or someone’s business/money) or were happening in spite of things, there would’ve long been a reaction, like last year with HYBE reacting fairly quickly to the Tae x Joanna rumors.

I’m not writing this because I want to prove that Vmin are together or anything like it, instead I’m doing it because this rumor is so annoying since it’s currently being basically forcefully pushed by weird people and brand new accounts and a “leaker” who’s changed their narrative about a hundred times by now despite what HYBE said. No PR company hired by agencies with budgets like YG or HYBE would be this incredibly sloppy. There’s enough accounts on Twitter alone who cosplay as HYBE staff, fictitious family members or friends, who push false narratives and informations all solely based around their own agendas, usually dictated by their own shipping or hate biases. And that’s how I see this rumor as well.

okay so like um when can we admit that maybe Hopes' writers are Just Racist and that's why Claude got so fucked over since he didn't fit into their obvious opinions about how he (as an Almyran, who are heavily inspired by Middle Eastern/East Asia influences and who are typically written with these exact stereotypes) "should" be. of course not saying that everyone who like Hopes Claude is a racist, but i'm sorry i just can't give that benefit of the doubt to Hopes' writers when their treatment of Almyra is THIS consistently bad throughout the game

Tbh I always try not to get into the racism issue because I know it’s a sensitive topic for a lot of people, but as someone who is part Middle Eastern it’s definitely been jarring to see. I try not to get super irritable about it because it’s a video game made in Japan (and they’re definitely not as open minded as the west is with this stuff and are often ignorant of actual facts, even if they mean no harm by stereotypes because it’s what they know. I know a series that I’ve loved since childhood and still do love as much as FE, but it’s a 90s series with stereotypes all over the place. I don’t believe the creator actually did it as an insult, but that he didn’t know any better (especially since the recent remake did try to improve on some of it). For this game in particular I’m not sure what their mindset was when making it, if they’re just ignorant and/or just didn’t care.

Lots of people were also angry when the leaks came out, and it frustrated me how people kept saying “stay calm, we don’t know if the leaks are true!” because I checked the script that had gone public (literally the entire game script was leaked, so people saying that were either just in denial or didn’t want to accept the fact that it was happening this way). The fact that people looked away when a lot of us were angry at the obviously true script still pisses me off to this day tbh, because so many people were just shoving down anyone’s concerns about what was leaked.

Personally, I did go through a good bit of the script (which I still have somewhere) and I actually stumbled on Claude declaring war on Fodlan from the bad SB route. It made me so angry how people kept trying to deny what was obviously there, and there’s no way anyone was so dedicated to writing that massive of a script to fake a leak. The amount of files was absolutely batshit, and it was also extremely messy and unclear as to who the speakers were, just the way you’d expect a bunch of files like that to look.

What angered me about it wasn’t just that Claude’s character got fucked by a cactus a few double digit times until he was unrecognizable in the second half, but that the only main brown character was the one who is arguably the worst of the three lords. In this game in particular the devs tried to keep Edelgard’s hands clean as much as possible, presumably because of her popularity, and so made Claude the one where players could lay blame on the misfortunes of the game. There’s only so much that Rhea can blamed for in a game where she’s hardly even present, even in the one route where you’re allied with her.

If it was only Claude I might have eventually just figured maybe it was an extremely unfortunate accident, and since we already knew Claude had a lot of problems growing up and that he was basically The Estranged Child, I could’ve passed off Shahid’s behavior. When it got around to Nader’s characterization being butchered and the Almyran NPC saying normally they could pillage and all that but he “guesses the Alliance’s rules are different”, that’s when it was just totally in the territory of not giving a shit about the Almyrans’ writing for me.

When things come from Japan, there’s an amount of tolerance I’ve built up for any unfortunate stereotypes and whatnot, but when it’s very clearly every character from that location, it goes into the territory of believing some places’ people all behave the same way.

It’s sad for me because I love Three Houses’ characters and I want to love Hopes’ new characters, but considering what a dumpster fire everything but AG was, it’s kinda a bitter aftertaste.

Evelyn had expected her day to go many ways. She did not, however, think that she’d spend it trapped in a bakery baking pies with a handsome semi-stranger.

Let’s rewind a little. It’s morning, she’s happy (for once) and ready to face the day (for once). Leefside definitely took some time getting used to, but now she has the feeling she can do this. She can write a proper article about it without being a total bitch. She can learn to appreciate this village. So she gets breakfast, brushes her teeth, gets dressed, and heads outside in order to scout the most interesting, tourist trap places.

After hours of visiting bookstores, skating rinks, coffee shops and weirdly specific stores (who knew a store selling only plastic flamingos existed!), she decided to spoil herself a little. Nothing better than getting cozy in a bakery and watching the snowfall as she feasts on a cinnamon roll. Yes, yes, this is it. Yum.

You see the gist, now? Today was supposed to be a nice day. However, Evelyn is overall unlucky. Evelyn has some god that is against her and refuses to let her have one good day. So of course (of course!) as soon as she gets comfortable in the empty bakery with her pastry, the biggest snowstorm she has ever seen hits.

And here she is now, baking pies with a handsome semi-stranger. “Remind me again why we’re doing this?”

Theo chuckles as he mixes the dry ingredients. “Nothing goes better with a snowstorm than pies, don’t you think? I’m thinking of hand delivering a few to people once the storm lets up. Best way to feel better about the fact that your house is buried under snow.”

And that was no exaggeration. As she looked outside the window, all she could see was white. Blinding white that could frostbite her ears off. Oh, great. She sighs as she cuts apple slices. Why did she accept this already? Because he was kind enough to let her stay in until the storm calmed down? Because his smile is weirdly charming? Because she’s too nice? Probably the latter. She’s way too nice, and now here she is helping him out while she could have napped in his apartment upstairs (his offer). 

Leefside is known for being a tight knit community, and Theo is proof of that with the way he speaks of each villager with a smile on his face, as if he knows them all personally. It astounds her, really. After all, why care? People come and go, there’s no need to get to know them that much. Back in New York, she didn’t know everyone who lived in her building, and she was perfectly happy with that. Connections might seem good, but in the long run? They hurt. She’d rather keep away from that guaranteed pain.

Maybe this is why you don’t have many friends, hm?

“It’s just…” she begins slicing another apple. “You don’t owe them anything.”

Theo gives her an amused smirk. “Do I have to? Can’t I simply want to be nice?”

Well, she can’t counter that without sounding like a complete asshole. That makes her grin. “I suppose you have a point.”

And really… this is fun. This is really fun. She hasn’t baked in a good while, so she had forgotten how good it felt. The entire bakery smells of apple and cinnamon as they bake the multiple pies they’ve made, and the entire time, they talk and talk and talk. 

“Are you kidding me?” Theo hands her a steaming cup of hot cocoa. “Legally Blonde is totally the best movie.”

“I mean, I guess it’s nice, but really? To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is the best romcom.”

“Please, fake dating is anything but realistic. And predictable,” he takes a sip from his own mug. “I mean, of course they’re going to end up dating! It’s literally written in the stars!”

“Should we test it, then? Fake date, and then part ways” she grins, fully determined to tease him. “I’m telling you, fake dating without getting feelings is doable.”

She does notice the way he blushes a little, and really, she’s blushing as well as she stares into those dark brown eyes. When the light hits them just right, they turn into a delightful honey color that she wants to stare at for hours.

Theo grins. “Well then, this only leaves us with one option.”

She raises an eyebrow. “Fake date?”

“Nope. We deliver these pies, then watch the romcoms later to decide which one is the best.”

Evelyn had expected her day to go many ways. Now, however, after delivering the pies to happy villagers and sitting down on Theo’s comfortable couch to watch romcoms, she finds herself pleasantly surprised.

Is Shawn gay for real? People joke about it all the time but I am serious. Before Camila, he never had a public gf and Hailey does not count that was not a real couple- more like situationship or hook up.

Apparently he used to date his prom date Lauren but I dont know if there is proof of that. He tweeted he used to have a secret gf in like 2017 for two years which could be a lie. Finally re public gfs idk lots of people in the public eye don’t want to date super publicly - some for sexuality reasons for sure, some because they tend to date more normies, some because like idk about y’all but I don’t hard launch every fucking thing I’m involved in so why would celebs? It’s imo sorta weird to go “well this person doesn’t post a bunch of flings on Insta and they don’t take dates to celeb hotspots and don’t date people as famous as them necessarily so ergo they don’t date anyone” yk? (Not saying that’s what you said because you did say PUBLIC gf but like my point is public is irrelevant bc we don’t know who they’re seeing outside of the sliver of their life that we are privy to).

Anyway, my personal rules are if a person says they don’t like that conversation, stop having it. Also don’t accuse people of queerbaiting because real people genuinely can’t lol? That’s a term created for shows and films and books that tease it to keep a gay audience with no intention of writing it into the plot. Don’t accuse people of being fake gay either because MANY OF US experiment and aren’t quite sure of exact labels and that’s okay too. Normalize just saying like… people are people and celebs are people. If labels make them happy, dope. Trust that they know that whichever one they’re using rn fits them best in their own head or at least is the best one for them to say out loud. Also remember that you’re allowed to change your labels. You’re allowed to experiment and try shit out on all sides of the equation. You’re allowed to have a preference but pepper in some other stuff lol. Idk man just let people vibe.

Gossiping about celeb mess is fun lol but gossiping about something that personal like… being gay/queer LABEL WISE or “are they closeted???” isn’t mess it’s a super personal thing and idk man. Like if you wanna say lol - with some evidence - “I heard Shawn kissed a boy at this party he went to lol” I’d be like “lmaooo what happened” but that’s got fuck all to do with his label/speculation about his identity then - that’d just be a fun rumor about him doing something a bit wild. It’s the speculation on identity that I have a problem with? I’ll add the one thing I’m even more hectic about tho is fertility speculation because there’s NO WAY that can be a fun rumor. Also serious psychiatric diagnoses like if you say someone is on the spectrum or has a personality disorder idk why that’d be a fun rumor. Gossiping about mess = funny. Gossiping about real deep shit like… isn’t fun or funny to me and shouldn’t be to anyone with a tad of empathy.
