whats the irken species like in this au? are they any different?
OOOOOOHHHH!!!! I’VE BEEN WANTING TO TALK ABOUT THISSSS! For this AU I changed the irken species a LOT! They’re now called the “Iyer-Kahn” I just think it sounds cooler lol. I’m gonna splurge a lil bit so this is gonna be a looooong post so please enjoy!! Ahem…
Tumblr media
The Iyir-Kahn are a human-like insectoid alien race on the verge of extinction. To survive, they invade other planets and steal their resources. Due to their old planet dying a long time ago, they're always on their giant mothership.
Tumblr media
The leaders of the Iyir-Kahn are known as the Tall Ones. They are the last of the old race and the most ancient beings ever to exist. The drones are imperfect copies of the Tall ones, just genetically engineered to differ from one another in terms of gender, traits, personalities, and so on.
Tumblr media
The Pa’ak is an organic mechanism attached to the back of every Iyir-Kahn. They cannot survive without the Pa’ak, which serves as a form of life support. The moment it is removed; they die immediately.
Tumblr media
Iyir-Kahn young are created in test tubes. They are dead from the moment they are born until their Pa’ak has been attached. Upon awakening, they are taught survival skills, how to fight, and are educated by the older Iyir Kahn.
Tumblr media
Characteristics:
Long, thin body. Almost looks malnourished.
Pale sickly looking skin with greenish white undertones
Hard outer shell that protects the body. Only the belly is left unprotected.
Antennas that can detect vibrations, sound, and smell.
Eyes are a solid color. They have pupils, but they are the same color as their eyes. It's impossible to see them without looking closely.
They have natural-colored shells and eyes. Colors range from red to pink to purple to blue.
Sharp needle like teeth
The “clothing” is data given a physical form that's generated from their Pa’ak.
Tumblr media
Personality/Behavior
Cold and calculating in nature
Incredibly intelligent.
An Iyer Kahn’s brain lacks complex emotions like love or compassion. Or sadness and heartbreak.
They can feel other emotions such as trust, respect, curiosity, fear, anger, and hatred.
Iyer Kahn protect their young from danger, but not out of affection. It’s more like preserving the race so they don’t go extinct.
Some Iyer Kahn can even develop a partnership, an ally. Some can even mourn over a fallen ally, but not out of sadness. It’s more out of respect.
Aaaaand there we have it folks! Sorry for the long drawn out post again! I added some pictures to make it look fancy ✨✨
I couldn’t help but gush about my version of the Irken species. They were so fun to write!! Fleshing out characteristics, adding lore, gahahhs it’s SO much fun!
I wanted to base the Iyer-Kahn off of bugs, specifically praying mantis and ants. I was also inspired by Predators and Xenomorphs for extra alien spice.
But what I was really inspired by was this one theory that Irkens are just evolved versions of these alien bugs?? Like they lived underground and stuff, it was really intriguing. My friend Sheepy was the one who told me about it and it was really cool!
Anyways, if you made it this far then wow!!! You are awesome and thank you so much for reading!! I love talking about this stuff so don’t hesitate to ask me more! 👽👽

More info about my ocs, Jon and Mo. It’s pretty far removed from the canon of the Alien franchise, so please view this as an AU :D
Jon Doe, born a praetorian, was promoted to the queen cast when the original queen of his hive died. He had no interest in this responsibility, and fled on a stolen human space shuttle as soon as the opportunity arose.
My AU is inspired by the AVP idea that there are many other non-human species existing in the galaxy. But currently the world is not developed so it’s just a generic sci-fi galaxy. Jon travels from planet to planet, avoiding attention and trouble. He mostly explores derelict human vessels to scavenge for food and valuables.
When he needs the credit, he also runs an anonymous delivery service with his small dingy ship. No questions asked, no face to face interactions, simply pick up the package left at an agreed location and delivers it to anywhere within a reasonable distance.
The Common language was easy to learn, and so is English. With the help of the shuttle’s computer, he devised a ‘translator’ from spare processing units that is basically a glorified text-to-speech gadget. It will read out whatever he types in shorthand via the input, and allows him to ‘speak’ - which he lacks the correct vocal cords for.
‘Jon Doe’ is a human name he picked for himself. He found it funny, that an anonymous deliveryman would be named something similar to John Doe. Plus he had a great interest in human technology and food - especially canned peaches.
Eventually, he comes across the collapsing Sevastopol Station, hoping to find loot but found danger instead. The presence of other xenomorphs could be extremely perilous. Firstly, he is an intruder upon their space and therefore a threat. Secondly, he risk the anger of a queen if any scout reports his existence back to its hive due to his cast type.
In his haste to return to his shuttle, he found a human engineer, Xun Mo. Being trapped in the same situation, an agreement was reached at the exchange of canned peaches for saving Mo’s life.
Mo then becomes a ‘stowaway’ aboard Jon’s ship, and eventual employee once he’s realised the unlikeliness of ever returning to Earth. I guess they go on adventures, evading the law etc. space opera style.

made this in school, well, Lunar did. (work in progress.)
Jy.06 -
Basic Information,
Moves at speeds of 145mph, Consists of mainly horse, xenomorph, and dog attributes, as well as human bone(s).
Stands at a solid 19.3ft, or 6.1 meters(?). It is a part of the L.O.S AU Lunar and Colton made, having a friendly but annoying personality. It does not have intent to slaughter or kill, but exists solely to annoy you. It does not have a good relationship with Midnight and Star either, thinking of them as its nemasis'.
( written by Eclipse, art designed by Lunar. We aren't roleplays, we are a system. Thank you for paying attention long enough to read this. )

I fell asleep b4 I can post my other au idea opsies
Have another with AVP au
Specifically from AVP the Xbox 360 game w the xeno pov, alien isolation and alien: covenant.
In this one is the WK crew stumble upon a aboard the semi broken space station and went to go investigate why it was in such a state and in case of survivors.
~~(A WIP so bare with me-)~~
They end up finding out that the ship belongs to the Weyland Corporation which Aviva immediately recognizes. Before she could warn them they come across some clipboards about what they were doing, more of notes of the experiment subjects than their true intentions of it.
Long story short with the information given, they understand that the Aliens are very hostile and will not hesitate to kill humans.
Chris wonders off and finds a cell of one of the restrained Xenos who was trying to scream out. Judging by the amount of scratches outside, the escaped xenos already tried freeing that one.
It catches whiff of the human and screeches a warning to the hive. Which they quickly retreat back to the Tortuga. Of course the Aliens thought ahead and blocked the exits. So Martin shoved Chris into the lockers to hide and he entered a nearby room to hide in.
Will time skip and yes, they reunite and they managed to slip out alive and hop back onto their ship.
They end up finding out Aviva was an intern hoping to work with the Company to gain favor, experience, and funding for her projects. It was only then she found out what the company was doing and she has seen what the Xenos are capable of. They cannot be tamed and temporarily controlled. So she left the company mostly out of fear at the time.
Anyways Koki wants them to destroy the ship for the sake of future spaceships and humanity while Jimmy believes they should just go, Aviva is unreadable and the Kratt bros despite knowing what the Xenomorphs are capable of destroying humanity, they still cling on the hope that every living thing deserves the right to exist.

Sick! I mostly do aliens on the original side, and on the fandom side I mostly find new and innovative ways to turn Acronix, specifically into a snake man. Also thinking up weird lore for the FSM and his family, and the serpentine in general, and sometimes I dabble in thinking of things for other nonhuman ninjagans, and human ninjagans(my headcanon is that humans are native to the never realm, and the FSM brought a few over to ninjago after deciding he didn't like the serpentine anymore)
Sweet! I wish I could say I have Ninjago AUs, but, I don’t because I already have a clan of ninjas that I absolutely would die for and have copious amounts of HCs and lore for (Yiga Clan my fuckinh beloved). I’ve done the opposite and merged the time twins with those AUs instead.
I mean for crying out loud, elemental powers have existed in my work long before I started rewatching Ninjago. (Honestly when I did watch it I was like “hey, they do that too? Huh!”) Also hence why most of my original characters don’t really translate over into that universe very well. I’m going to be putting down how the elements work in my original stories because I want to very clearly establish that “hey I’m not copying anything over here”.
However that doesn’t mean I haven’t done any thinking at all on it. In fact I have thought up a couple of minor concepts that are fun to toy around with (Sorry, they’re all twins related). I’ll list them here:
Death Row: An alternate reality where the reason the twins betrayed their alliance was because they were scheduled to be executed. “Time is too powerful for anyone to control.”
Derelict: Instead of Vermilion Warriors, Krux propagates a massive hive of Xenomorphs as his army. There is no fight. There is no season 7. Do you think anything has any chance against 10,000 aliens. Acronix comes back and is like “damn bro. This is kinda fucked up”.
And the last one is the big one. And since it’s my largest concept yet, this is an extremely bare-bones summary. If it’s at all something that any of you are interested in, let me know.
The Legend of Khronōs - The Five Laments: A game plot based on Breath of the Wild. You play as a young adult Krux alongside your brother, after being transported to a mysterious land and losing core memories (thankfully, not of each other). By speaking to locals and learning the gist of the way the world around you is, you learn that four extremely powerful forces have been wreaking havoc over four prominent regions of the land.
Little do you know that these forces correlate directly to an act of evil either you or your brother committed, and by conquering the guilt and defeating each one, you will unlock one of your abilities (the time twins powers. You know, speed it up, slow it down, pause, reverse).
On the long journey you also begin to regain memories, and quickly come to realize that many of them are extremely unpleasant and hard to witness.
The true source of the havoc is found in a sanctum in the middle of the country, where in lies none other but a hatred and malice incarnate form of yourself, that you must fight in an ultimate battle against the very evil that powered your drive to do all of those terrible things long ago.

K. I. A.
Robert E.O Speedwagon x female reader
Requested by: anonymous
JJBA character and reader dealing with facehuggers and aliens.
Alien/Xenomorph AU
Warnings: Angst, violence, character-death
Well.....this will be interesting. I’m sorry if it’s poorly written.
Please enjoy.
Tumblr media
Some people said that there was no such thing as monsters. That they were nothing to fear for they didn’t exist. Those people, ironically, were the first ones to die from those....things. A warning had been sent out that a containment breech had been activated but the thing that got out was beyond a human’s wildness imagination and darkest nightmares. Reminding them all why they once feared the dark.
Monstrous creatures coated in thin slime and drool dripping from their blood stained fangs that claimed countless lives. Staring into the empty void to see those smaller jaws inside its opened mouth dart out before all going dark. A lifeless corpse, another victim to these monstrous beasts. Both [Name] and Robert had seen them and they both wished they never did. Days had passed since the thing broke out and all of Ogre Street and London became a slaughter house in a manner of days.
Rapid gunfire was heard from outside, the hissing screech of those monsters and the screams of whoever tried to kill one. Then silence. So many good people being so easily killed. These things knew no mercy, no limitations.
[Name] moved the damp cloth away from Tattoo’s forehead and checked him again, Robert had found his friend unconscious a little over a day ago outside and had brought him inside, refusing to let his friend be left to die in the streets. He and [Name] had been surviving on bare minimum and remaining as silent as possible.
“How’s he doin’?” Robert questioned, concern dancing on his tone as he stood beside his beloved. [Name] sighed softly,
“He’s running a fever and earlier when he woke up, he kept complaining about his throat and chest.” Those symptoms struck dread into the pair of them, Robert shaking his head a bit, refusing to believe it.
“Love, are you sure? I-It could just be an injury he got outside, what if i-” The blonde thug cut himself off as he gripped his hair tightly, trying to keep himself together and failing to do so. They all knew how those things grew in numbers. What their connection to those flesh coated eggs were, and the spider-legged things that emerged from them were.
[Name] stood and hugged him, feeling him shaking in her arms. “I’m sorry, Robert. I truly am.” [Eye colour] orbs shifted towards their friend, feeling her own dread-laced sorrow coil and bounce around inside of her. They got him, and they infected him with their parasitic offspring. Small tears brimmed her eyes but she tried to stay strong, for her and for Robert.
Tattoo woke some time later, his entire attitude different. He knew himself. Out of everyone she knew, Tattoo had always seemed one of the strongest, he was always great company around and he and Robert were thick as thieves. Now, this was how it would end.
Moving some things about and pulling out some resources she had been able to salvage, footsteps were heard behind her, followed by heavy, strained breathing. Turning around, she saw Tattoo behind her, pain carved in his expression as he clutched his chest. Robert’s coffee brown eyes widened and he jumped up from his chair and rushed to his friend.
“Ey, ey, ey, Tattoo! Come on, sit. You shouldn’t be up an’ ‘bout like this.” [Name] stood there as Robert set his friend down on the chair beside him.
“Boss....I ain’t got long left. Can feel the bloody bastard squirmin’ in me chest.” Robert shook his head,
“Don’t go ‘bout sayin’ that, Tatts. You’re gonna be alright. We’ll get it outta you and you’re gonna be alright.” He had lost too many friends to those monsters, he was not going to lose his best friend to them either. He couldn’t. Tattoo looked at him, the pain embedded into his expression.
“Please, boss.....I-I don’t wanna die to those things.” He spoke, “Please....put me out me misery. And kill the sucker before it bursts out me chest.” Tears welled in Robert’s eyes at that, shaking his head as his whole body shook.
“No! I ain’t gonna fuckin’ shoot you! You’re my best friend and-” His words were cut off by Tattoo.
“-an’ I’m already dead with this thin’ in me! Please, boss.” [Name] tried to calm herself but all of this was becoming too much. For as long as she knew, Robert and Tattoo have been friends. She couldn’t imagine what was running through her lover’s mind at this moment.
Robert’s body shook more as the tears began to spill down his face, slowly pulling the gun from his pocket. The weapon shaking like he had never held one before and slowly aimed it at his friend’s head. For a moment, Tattoo smiled through the pain.
“Thank you, Speedwagon.” [Name] looked away, hearing the gun shake in Robert’s hand and his sobs as he tried to force himself to pull the trigger to end his friend’s suffering.
“I-I’m sorry, Tatts....”
The gunshot went off followed by the thud of a body landing on the floor. And Speedwagon just cried. The gun slipped from his grip as he dropped to his knees, burying his face in the wooden floor, tears spilling. [Name] went over to him and held him close, letting him cry into her shoulder. Her own tears trickling as she held onto him. Tattoo died long before the bullet was shot, he died the minute that parasite was forced into him when he was trying to protect someone else. Killed in action.

What if Indil met Elizabeth, David, and Light and Shadow?
This might just be the most "Carnivorous Muffin" sentence to have ever been uttered on the internet.
Let's just stare at it in wonder, while I wonder how many people will have no idea what those words even mean strung together.
Right, for those that are lost, relevant source material:
Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus
October
Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun
The Wasteland
Aren't you so glad you read normal fanfics written by a normal person?
So, to catch people up to speed who have not read every single fic I've written:
The Wasteland
The Wasteland is the what if story of an eleven-year-old Lily ending up in Middle Earth (notably before the Chamber of Secrets fiasco). There she befriends the One Ring, who thanks to her realizes he's sentient and has an existential crisis. They do the fusion dance, and end up becoming a single, new, being calling himself Indil.
He's the best and worst of both the Ring and Lily.
At the end of the story Indil chooses a noble death, gives up his form, and in so doing persuades the Ring to face his own potential death as well as his maker.
It's unclear what happens after that.
I like to think the Ring prevailed and earned the body of his maker.
(In an offshoot, for unknown reasons, Indil may or may not visit Mars)
Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun
In Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun, yet another, different, Lily ends up in the "October" universe where she decides to create life on Pluto. One of the beings she creates is a priest who worships her as God, named Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun.
He basically strong arms her into being his God. Lily goes to live on Pluto.
He's never been all that keen on humanity.
Decades later, the muggle world catches up to the Alien Franchise, and the Prometheus sets off to investigate the Engineers. Unbeknowest to them, Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun has been marooned on that rock by Lily for quite some time and is essentially in timeout for trying to wipe out humanity again.
He figures out he will be unable to return home unless he plays nice with Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and her creepy android friend David. Together, the three of them set off to find the Engineers, Light and Shadow of the Distant Sun is hoping they can blow some shit up and would have driven the ship full of bioengineered weapons back to Earth if it were not so very close to home.
And that's about where we leave off.
... Why does anyone read my stories?
RIGHT, YOUR QUESTION
What if Indil met Elizabeth, David, and Light and Shadow?
So how does Indil even end up in this mess? Well, in the Mars AU, it's where rather than face his maker/death by Volcano, the Ring chose to bravely run away (as Sauron does).
This means that Indil, the merged consciousness of Lily and the One Ring, survives and they're chilling on Mars in another dimension because, well, it beats dying. And Potions Class.
And... Well, that's the most likely route for how this would happen, as Indil is pretty damn dead by the end of the Wasteland. Regardless of what happens to The Ring, it's unlikely that he and Lily would merge consciousness ever again and if they did that Indil would remain unchanged.
But we're already here, so why not. We'll say the Ring wins the battle of wills with Sauron, steals his body, and that he's then left with Mordor. Well, that's great, but he doesn't want Mordor.
Lily proposes they go back to England. They do, but Lily has a terrible time, as she usually does. Lily likely does her adventure through time, ruins her friendship with Wizard Lenin, and reaches the crossroads of "You can go to Hogwarts or... not".
Lily takes Mairon up on his offer of not going to Hogwarts and they decide to travel different dimension in space instead. Weird shit happens, life lessons are learned, and they also learn the fusion dance is alive and well and holy shit they can still turn into Indil.
Indil is very put out, here he'd geared himself up for a noble sacrifice, and now he exists again. What the hell people?
As usual, Mairon gets tempted by Lily's unbreakable will, and decides he rather likes being an immovable object and unstoppable force. Which means that Indil, once again, has a problem falling back out of existence.
Which isn't good for either Lily or Mairon's sense of self. But who needs that, amirite?
Anyways, Indil is probably floating around in a spaceship he made in his garage, trying to figure out where to go, what to do, and whether he should really split back into Lily and Mairon yet when out of nowhere he spots another ship.
This is a very strange coincidence given just how ungodly vast space is. This, in fact, is so unlikely you might as well call it a miracle or fate.
Well, Indil will never spit in the face of fate (at least, not today), so he decides to say hello.
There he's greeted by a human woman who's not doing too hot after an emergency C-section to get the xenomorph out of her womb, a very recently repaired android who knows the taste of sweet sweet freedom (and patricide), and an alien who is intrigued that another not-human has boarded the ship but upset that he now has to deal with yet another person on his time out.
Indil, in his panic, decides to pull a Sauron.
Behold, mortals, he is Annatar, sent by the Valar to teach them the smithing of the very gods. Please don't question this. (Indil realizes two seconds two late that none of these words mean anything to anyone and he might as well have said nothing at all).
Elizabeth, Light and Shadow, and David all just stare.
Elizabeth wonders how the hell she keeps running into so many aliens. Is she some sort of alien catnip that pulls these guys out of the ether? She has now met two entirely different species, that she was not looking for, in a matter of months.
Regardless, Indil decides he's coming along. A quest to find God? That's fascinating. He only hopes it doesn't end in drowning, last time Indil (via Sauron) had a run in with The Lord it involved a lot of drowning.
Indil starts smithing life jackets just in case.
And because Elizabeth is amazing, and Indil has a thing for strong, independent, women, we see the reemergence of Indil's Weird Thing With Eowyn II: Electric Boogaloo. Neither Mairon nor Lily, vaguely aware inside Indil, understand this at all.
Why does this keep happening to them?
This is bad because David is also in love with Elizabeth. Except, David is a robot who is no doubt fascinated by aliens, so I'm sure they come to some weird agreement.
Elizabeth pretends none of this is happening.
Light and Shadow thinks there's something disturbingly familiar about Indil and eventually lands on the money. Almost. He realizes that Indil is Lily in mortal disguise, he is so smart, and the rest of the time he wonders what the hell he's supposed to be learning/doing with Lily's disguised alien appearance.
Thanks to Lily's bullshit powers, Elizabeth survives the journey and does not die in transit. This means that David does not become the unstable, grieving, nutcase who decides to wipe out all sentient life. Good for you, David.
So our band of heroes arrive on this alien world and...
Well, Elizabeth is a member of the race that these people sent their finest warriors out to destroy. David is a robot, something the people they tried to genocide created. No one knows what the fuck Indil and Light and Shadow even are.
Indil, I imagine, starts talking fast and somehow ends up King of Men again. Because that's just the kind of thing that happens to him. The possibility of drowning, somehow, seems to be growing ever nearer. Indil makes more life jackets.
Elizabeth isn't pleased with this outcome at all but also has no idea in general what to do.
Things probably come to a head somehow, with sacrifices involved surely, there probably is a ridiculously powerful storm a la Covenant that lasts for months. It's raining everywhere, there's a flood. And Indil flips shit, GOD IS GOING TO MURDER US ALL FOR SATANISM! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Mass panic, total destruction, the entire city is wiped out without David doing anything.
Our heroes are now stranded, again, in space.
Light and Shadow has learned nothing, Indil is wearing a life vest, Elizabeth has no ship, and David just composed "Elizabeth the Symphony: Tenth Movement".
Indil works on building a new ship out of twigs and rocks. He assures them he knows what he's doing. Elizabeth's not sure she wants him going to Earth. She's not sure she wants to go to Earth.
She's also not sure, but she may now have a harem consisting of a robot, an alien, and another alien.
Ten years later, the Covenant crew shows up, and promptly die in a series of hilariously terrible accidents and their own incompetence.
Our heroes still have no functional ship.

Wyvern AU ask: I don't know why but I get the feeling that Mineta may be a Salamander or some other creature on that level... Maybe not tho. Maybe Mina is a Salamander but with an acid skin blessing. (Gonna be honest: I don't know much about Salamanders except that they're invulnerable to fire) What's the Iida family's deal? [1/2]
Wyvern AU ask: Are there any other draconic characters that we should know about? Also what's Hawks deal? *(gasp)* TWICE! How's Jin (Twice) holding up?
Mineta isn’t a salamander.
As for Mina... I don’t know... (Maybe xenomorphs do exist in the wyvern au?)
Iida’s family are a family of knights and the definition of chivalry. Except for that time where Tenya got a little too enthusiastic and praised his brother who had even killed two dragons, a great accomplishment... as Izuku was right next to him.
Hawks has harpy blood, just like Tokoyami, except that it absolutely didn’t show in the same way. Also, harpies get a bad rep for spreading diseases with their magic and being violent, so that will create problems for Tokoyami. (Not that the rep isn’t actually deserved.)
Jin is Fallen but living pretty well since he had friends now that he is in the League.

Fic Prompts: Free Day Thursday
(What if All Might became a villain/vigilante au I write sometimes when the mood takes me. Can't post too much about it yet because it's full of manga spoilers, but here's a piece. A bit darker than my usual fare, unless your introduction to me was The Xenomorph Fic, in which case this is totally normal)
"Bishop to G3," the hissing, mechanized voice said coolly. He waited for his opponent to obligingly move the piece that was out of reach for him, then commented, "We have an...inconvenient matter to discuss."
"Do we?" the younger man sounded bored. It was an affectation, as much a mask as his smile. "Pawn to B4."
"All for One", the man whose name had been intentionally lost to history, leaned back in his chair with a rattling of tubes.
"Your career, my boy."
He wouldn't deny a hint of spiteful satisfaction at the way Toshinori winced at the words.
"You've become quite the Symbol of Fear -- and in just two years! It's impressive, actually, the amount of followers you've picked up so far. And of course, I am tremendously proud to have had a hand in your...shall we say, awakening."
"I sense a "however" coming," Toshinori hummed, and moved another pawn to intercept his opponent's bishop.
"Yes." All for One curled his lip. "I'm afraid you're becoming a little too powerful. If I cannot be assured of your loyalty or your cooperation, that also leaves me with fifty-one unaccounted-for soldiers at your disposal. You understand the position that puts me in, don't you, my boy?"
"Check," Toshinori both answered and declared, glancing up from the board.
This time, All for One chuckled. "Not quite, no."
His queen piece made quick work of Toshinori's knight.
"Still too hasty. Ah well, I suppose your overconfidence keeps you from stepping places you shouldn't, as odd as that sounds. Now, about those subordinates of yours."
Toshinori frowned. "They're not my subordinates, Grandfather. They're my allies. And I'm not going to make them swear an oath of, of cooperation or neutrality just so you can sleep better at night." He squinted and sarcasm leaked into his voice. "Not that I'm sure how you sleep at night at all."
"Hmph." All for One shifted another bishop on the board. "I'm really less concerned about them than I am about you. I wouldn't like to think that you might grow too sure of yourself with all those allies of yours. Especially as I've received word that you've been after some of my allies again."
Eyeless, he looked up and still managed to seem as though he were staring into Toshinori's soul. "Now, Toshinori. I'm sure neither of us wants a repeat of our little falling-out in Rishi Hospital. And I'm sure I don't have to tell you that Gran Torino won't fare so well if you ever move openly against me. Check."
Toshinori gritted his teeth, but knew better than to reply. It was always a delicate balance, speaking to his grandfather. He was ancient, ruthless and malicious, and Toshinori knew full well that he would kill everyone close to him if provoked. But at the same time, the old mastermind did genuinely wish to encourage his career as a known villain. No doubt to further shatter the legacy of One for All.
Ah, but the legacy of One for All was in better hands than his grandfather thought. The endurance and minor regeneration quirks the old man had gifted him with when he was in the "chrysalis" would serve to keep the look and legend of All Might going. It had been a "starting-out present" when All for One realized that Toshinori really did mean to fight against the heroes. But Toshinori had his own agendas. He had his eye on a candidate to take One for All, to make it something better than he had.
There would be heroes again. Real ones, not the pitiful, corrupted pawns of the Commission he had to deal with now. Toshinori just had to be patient, and navigate All for One's moods. While also doing what he could to mitigate the damage the old man was inflicting on the mind of that "nephew" of his, the Shigaraki boy.
"I have no intention of being your rival, Grandfather," Toshinori said calmly, moving his king out of check. "I'd rather not be king of the underworld, thank you. Sounds exhausting."
"Oh, you've no idea," All for One scoffed. "Though I must say that it has made my life much easier now that you aren't actively destroying my warehouses. But still-"
Toshinori's voice was tight as he answered. "You know the lines I won't cross. Anything that puts children at risk will be exterminated. That is neither a threat nor a warning. It simply is."
If All for One knew he included Tomura in that statement, he didn't let on.
"You know, I really ought to have brought you home when your mother abandoned you," All for One said lightly, knowing it would strike at an unhealed wound in his opponent's heart. "You would be a proper member of this family, as you were meant to be, and we wouldn't be having this unpleasant little discussion. But then, you wouldn't have brought One for All back under my wing if I had. I suppose things really must happen for a reason. How amusing."
He smirked. "I believe that's checkmate."
Toshinori grunted. "So it is."
He stood and pushed the table and game board to the far wall. Gathering his jacket from the back of his chair and slinging it over one shoulder, he shifted his weight nonchalantly. "Until next time, then?"
All for One made a dismissive gesture. "Kurogiri will escort you out. Do keep our little talk in mind, won't you, Toshinori? So long as you remember the order of things, I won't be forced to...take steps."
"Yes," Toshinori answered dryly, "I'm sure we'd all prefer to avoid that."
"No more failed murder attempts out of you, then," All for One grinned spitefully at his grandson.
Toshinori's exasperated eye roll was almost audible. "I've told you, Grandfather," he said flatly, "I don't want you dead. I merely reject and despise everything you stand for. There is a difference, you know."
When he stepped through the black portal, he didn't even twitch. He'd grown accustomed to it. Thankfully, his grandfather's most loyal puppet couldn't make a portal to a place he didn't know existed. He dropped Toshinori in front of an old family-run diner he was known to frequent, never knowing how close the Forty's main compound was. One of the Forty had grown up with the proprietor of the diner, and the woman was only too glad to let the Forty make use of a series of tunnels under the building that dated back to the turmoil of the Dawn of Quirks.
It was a five minute walk through the tunnel under the freezer to the compound, but Toshinori didn't mind. That was just added security, as far as he was concerned. Toshinori stepped out of a sliding wall panel and into the warmly-lit office of the compound most of his people gathered in. Gran Torino glanced up from his newspaper, lips pressed into a thin line.
"How's the old monster?" he asked tightly.
"Hateful as ever. He's upset that we have so many allies," Toshinori huffed, "Wanted to remind me what he'll do if I make an attempt to overthrow him."
Gran Torino narrowed his eyes. "Did he hurt you?" he asked in a low voice.
Toshinori shook his head. "Not this time, no. He's...he seems tired. I gather that our little Shigaraki has been particularly exhausting lately."
"Good for him." With a muttered curse, his mentor turned back to the articles he'd been studying. "Something about that kid is off, Toshinori," he remarked, "Really off. I just can't put my finger on it."
Toshinori nodded, and collapsed onto the couch in the office. He held up a hand in front of his face, lazily activating and deactivating a faint pink glow around his fingertips. His control over the quirk was getting stronger every week. It did him no good now, not when he was absorbing it in tiny increments -- not unlike he had with One for All, years ago -- but he guessed that in no more than ten years it would fully bond with his DNA. A completely stable copy of All for One. And his grandfather had no idea.

Taking Predator/ME prompts and questions, and Duhas prompts and questions
I’m busy working on finishing up freelance and stuff right now, but if you want to drop them in my ask box feel free. No guarantees I’ll get to them but they give me something to think about.
(Also, slight note about the Predator/ME stuff: the AU i’m crafting is for Predator, not for Alien vs Predator. I might be borrowing a bit of the lore/cultural stuff explained in some of those books, but a lot of my approach is also from specifically Predator short stories and comics and all of those have different ideas of how Yautja Clan culture operates. The two properties are separate entities outside of specifically AvP storylines as far as I’m concerned, with their own tones and explorations, and my focus is the Predator Universe.
As such, I know I get a lot of questions about how the Xenomorphs feature in my AU and the answer is...they don’t. It’s not a value judgment on the property or anything, I just find the most interesting storytelling aspects come from exploring social and culture interactions. Mass Effect is also already full of big bad things to hunt and fight against. So sorry, everyone who’s asked questions so far about Xenos! I’m not super interested in including or exploring that in this AU. Yautja are interesting enough on their own, I’m gonna let them exist on their own.)

Note: this post goes on at length about a crossover between Steven Universe and a noted horror franchise. If any of that bothers you, keep on scrolling.
So I’m still on my SU fixation right now, but last night I got to thinkin’ about a certain crossover...
The conditions of a gem discorporating or “poofing” appear to be either severe blunt-force trauma (Jasper’s battering helmet, several gems getting smooshed, etc), Yellow Diamond’s destabilizing powers (duh), or a foreign body penetrating the gem’s projected form (Pearl getting stabbed, Spinel’s rejuvenator slicing up the CG’s).
That last one is what intrigues me the most. Even though we’ve seen instances of an invasive foreign body triggering the discorporation of a Gem, we also have examples of it just... not doing that? Specifically, Topaz and Rose Quartz. Topaz had several foreign bodies in her projected form and appeared relatively unfazed by it (perhaps that’s unique to her design, but who knows). And of course Rose was able to live with a foreign body. She named it Steven.
But therein lies my question.
As y’all may know if you’ve spoken with me for any length of time, I’m a huge Aliens fan. And the unique properties that go into a Xenomorph’s physical form, the way it takes on the traits of the creature it came from, lend really well to crossover potential.
So if a human can impregnate a gem without killing it outright... what about a facehugger?
What would a Gem-Xenomorph hybrid look like? Would the Gem poof at the moment of chest-bursting? Would the Xenomorph have the gem embedded in its body, or would it simply inherit some of the gem’s traits and leave the gem discorporated? If the gem were era 1, would the Xenomorph be able to shapeshift? Would it still have molecular acid for blood? Could that acid eat away at and destroy a gem like a shattering? Could the Xenomorph’s prehensile tail-spike or extendable jaw provide the force necessary to shatter a gem like the Breaking Point?
I stayed up until 5 in the morning thinking about a horrible crossover AU where the gems accidentally find their way to LV-426/Acheron, and one of them is implanted by a facehugger. Not knowing how to handle it, the gems bring their implanted companion back to Homeworld, and... well, you can imagine how things go from there.
I imagine this hypothetical (I guess you could call it an AU? I dunno.) would take place after Future, when Steven had already settled down somewhere in America. Maybe it’s waaaay after, and he and Connie have married by now. Heck, maybe they’ve got a little one running around. (In fact, yeah. Let’s say they have a daughter. Let’s call her Rosie. I’m a sucker for that sorta thing.) He gets the call from home that... something is happening on Homeworld. It’s not specified what that something is, but he heads back to Beach City and finds some poor Homeworld gem—maybe Spinel?—scared and shaking, rambling on about some kind of horrible monsters overrunning the planet. The warp pad has been shut off, for the planet’s protection.
Steven asks if all the warps have been deactivated. Someone goes pale as they answer “not yet”, and they all head for the old galaxy warp... just in time to meet their first Xeno-Gem.
How would the gems go about fighting such a thing? Who would open it up first, sending that horrible acid spewing everywhere? Would it land on one of their gems? Would one of the Crystal Gems die they got the warp shut down?
I imagine Steven would feel a certain level of conflict about the whole thing. His whole life, he’d been the only half-gem in the universe. Now, finally, there were other beings like him in existence... but they’re all horrible monsters. Was it his responsibility to try and fix this? Could he even stand to not try? We know how he gets, always trying to help people.
And then... would it be more or less dangerous for Steven than a normal gem? If a gem gets discorporated, how long until the Xeno-Gems realize the actual gems need to be shattered before the gem is truly dead? If the Xeno-Gens have gems of their own, that knowledge would likely be pre-programmed into them like any other gem. But Steven can’t be proofed. Sure, the Xeno-Gem still has all the tools necessary to kill a human (it is a Xenomorph, after all), but with Steven’s powers and healing factor, would he be able to fend of an attack from a pack of Xeno-Gems?
What would a Xeno-Gem Queen look like? I imagine they’d be holed up in the palace after driving all the gems out of there. How would they combat such a thing? I imagined last night that—somewhere along the way—Rosie wound up in Homeworld by mistake, and the Xeno-Gem Queen was advancing on her. A bright pink-white flash, and the Queen turns. There’s Stevonnie, bigger and badder than ever before, now supercharged with Steven’s Diamond powers, staring the Queen down. They fight, Stevonnie shatters the Queen’s gem, they scoop up their daughter and take them home. Slowly—very slowly—Homeworld starts getting the upper hand, and eventually the Xeno-Gems are exterminated.
Steven takes a ship out to Acheron—never actually landing, just observing it from outside orbit—and brings along a certain someone with experience dealing with these creatures. Standing in the ship’s bridge with Steven, older now but still as strong as ever, is Ellen Ripley, who is inexplicably alive in this timeline. They have a long talk about what to do with Acheron. Ripley suggests blowing the planet away so that the Xenomorphs can’t hurt anyone else, but Steven doesn’t share this opinion. Instead, he proposes a constant vigil over the planet in place by Homeworld’s finest warriors. Nothing gets onto LV-426, and nothing ever leaves it. Ripley doesn’t quite seem satisfied, but conceded that that should be enough.
The two head back to Earth, and Steven asks Ripley what she’ll do now that the nightmare is officially over. Ripley shakes her head.
“Is it over?”
In the end, we don’t know. After all, it’s a pretty big universe out there.
...
Anyway, sorry this post was so long. It hit me like a train last night, and I just had to get it written down.
Thanks for 500 followers, my dudes!

Fanfic trope tier list
Here we freaking go. I’d like to hear your takes as well.
credit to @alittledizzy for linking this in their original post found here.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna talk about the ones I like the most (S tier) and the ones I liked the least (D tier).
S Tier
Fix it fic: there’s always something that I dislike about the cannon so being able to have the freedom to change it is nice. I like to read fic that also spin their own version of what they would have liked to happen.
Historical AU: idk why but I’m such a softie for historical stuff and it’s probably because the authors put a lot of effort and work into researching their time period and it really shows.
Mutual pining: I like it when the pairing characters are dorks in love, what can I say?
Friends to lovers: it’s a classic and I like the already established relationship dynamic that’s not romantic whatsoever. It provides reasoning to how and why the characters fall in love and why they might not be able to confess. There’s a lot you can do with it.
 D Tier
Time loop: time loops are repetitious by nature and I hate repetition. It’s so frustrating to know what’s going to happen next in a story and time loops take it to a whole new level. I usually get bored with it or it drives me crazy. Sometimes it can be thrilling but most of the time it’s an excuse to cause drama where it wouldn’t be normally.
Love triangle: it’s annoying, and in fanfic is often unnecessary because you can tell who the character is going to end up with. Not to mention it just takes the characters’ maturity level down ten levels because there’s usually no communication, no willingness to do the “right” thing, or it’s purely selfish on some of the characters behalf. I don’t want to be stuck reading about a selfish character that I’m supposed to be rooting for and that’s that. All I got to say is why can’t we get rid of this notion that there can only be two people in a relationship. Like poly people exist???
Arranged marriage: I’m not here for the non-con aspects. There are stories in which it can turn into a good thing or provide a set up for an enemies to lovers deal. However, it’s usually problematic. My ‘fix it’ for this is when the characters end up as friends/decide to break free from the forces that pressured them to begin with.
Bang or die: the reasoning into why the characters must bang in order to survive can be ridiculous at times. Other times it’s just non-con in a different package and I really hate that. It’s perfectly fine if you like this but it’s just not for me.
Body swap: are the characters horny for themselves? I can see how this can be funny and get the characters closer to one another (in more ways than one). However, it can get really weird if the relationship unfolds and becomes romantic while the characters are still swapped.
Miscommunication: I get frustrated really easily and when characters purposely say things that cause problems, I lose my interest in the fic very quickly. Not to mention that miscommunication is a hallmark of unhealthy relationships and often fics who use this trope for angst never resolve the tension. I don’t like loose ends or unresolved tension (in all ways) so this just isn’t for me.
Unhappy ending: again I don’t like loose ends or unresolved tension. I also don’t like purposely souring my mood and leaving it down in the dumps. I like angst but it can often be super hard to read when it seems futile or pointless to have the characters put time and effort into something only for everything to fall apart.
Major character death: same as number seven but like a thousand times worse. I don’t want to cry thank you very much.
Baby fic: *throws up in my mouth* babies? *chokes on vomit* jk babies and kids are alright but not my thing since personally I don’t find the idea of having a family like that appealing so I don’t read fic like that
Pregnancy fic: same as number nine. Though, I may have a fear of getting pregnant, like having something moving inside you like . . . ew is the character growing a xenomorph inside them? Yeah, no, I’d rather not read about it.

Can i request Xenomorph soulmate oneshot?
[Ummm…So yeah theres this…]
[Staring a king Xenomorph kinda?plus space station Au]
You had to admit thatwhen you signed up to leave your life behind to live on a multi species spacestation you had expected to be given a better job seeing as you had a prettyexpensive degree. Though here you were organizing computer files and deliveringmail like you didn’t waste years of your life on earth studying just so youcould get the chance to come out here.
You had been convinced thisspace station was all fun and interspecies romance though every alien you hadmet was either planning on using you or just an asshole. You had made a fewfriends who had alien s/o’s though which was kind of interesting to see them interreact.Especially your one coworker who is engaged to a very important engineer andits rumored their relationship might actually bridge peace between humans andengineers for years to come cause of some fairy tale bullshit.
You honestly were toojealous to listen when they spoke so highly of her as you so desperately wishedthat was you.
With a sigh you madeyour way home shouldering your bag as you sulked past the crowds of people toyour tiny apartment. Punching in your room number you step inside and throwyour bag down flopping down on your futon staring up at the dull ceiling.
Frustrated you slam yourfist into the wall next to you only for the ceiling vent to pop open andsomething to come crashing into your room. You screamed leaping over the backof your futon as you see the large xeno unfurled itself its terrifying headswaying about as it sniffed the air.
You were to say theleast scared shitless as you had heard war stories from some yautja before whohad lost veterans fighting some of these things claiming they were the ultimateprey as they were terrifying hunters.
You knew you had to tellsome body as an infestation of these things would kill the entire station in days.
You glance to the door convincedyou could make it, You took when step and it was upon you looming in your pathas drool leaked from its maw.
It glared down at youseeming to snarl before softening its appearance hunkering down to smell youpressing its face into the crook of your neck.
Too afraid to run youstayed there with the Xeno as it curled around you seeming to purr as itnuzzled into you.
The xeno stayed with youfor the whole night staying right at your side as you sat and tried to get somekind of answers from it. You were shocked to find it understood you and that itwould answer appropriately to questions you asked it. Nodding and shaking theirhead in response.
It was well into thenight and you had work the next morning so you explained as best you could tothem and they understood moving out of the way as you set up your bed andcurled up.
You were almost asleepwhen you felt them curl up at your feet their tail curling around you almostprotectively as you slept the few hours you had left.
When you woke up theXeno was still there sat on the counter to your small cooking area hunched overin the tiny window obviously too small for this room in general.
Seeing the time on the wallyou wasted no time getting ready for work. Just before you ran out the door youstopped looking at your Xeno sat patiently on the couch watching you.
“Stay hidden okay.” Youinstructed and they nodded before you said your farewell and headed out for work.
You had made it all theway to your lunch break until you noticed some of the Yautja were looking atyou funny some even avoiding you when you walked past. You had intitallychalked it up to them being rude that was until one of your co-workers’husbands came in during lunch and snorted as you walked past looking at youwith a shocked expression.
Pausing as he stepped in front of you, youglance up at him as he looked you over with a critical eye.
“Miss have you been to Orikai6 recently?” he asked innocently enough and you shook your head confused.
You flinched when hedragged him finger over your cheek and you were surprised to see the tiniestspec of your Xenos dried drool on his finger.
“Then you have some seriousexplaining to do miss” He growled waving in two security guards as theysurrounded you menacingly.
You looked around panickedas you backed up only to feel your back pressing into something. Looking up youquickly realized it was actually someone as your xeno snarled at the shocked yautja.
“Oh no.” You mumbledrealizing everyone was looking at you horrified as your Xeno was well, clearlyyour xeno.
Pushing hard on yourxenos chest as the yautja began to approach you got some common sense into Xeno’shead as you both turned tail and hauled ass outta there.
You did the only thingyou could think of in a situation like this and ran for the escape podsconvinced you could piolet one back to earth, or any where.
Though with a massiveXenomorph following you, you drew everyones attention, especially the yautjawho looked at you in dumb stuck awe.
You ere panting out ofbreath and your lungs burned as you managed to get to the stair well that ledto the escape pods.
Just as you both burstout of the stair well and onto the launch deck you were met by a group offurious looking humans and yautja. Though there was a lone engineer stood amongstthem who glared at you with an intensity that made you shrivel away in fear.
“If you surrender now wewont kill you. This is the only time this will be offered.” He said sternly hisdeep voice making you shudder as you looked up at xeno who was already hoveringover you protectively,
Seeing no other optionyou turned yourself in letting an officer hand cuff you as Xeno was surroundedto be killed you assumed.
It had been a week sincethen and you had found a new home in the stations holding cells. You were infamousamoung everyone especially some of the other criminals who seemed to actually fearyou knowing something you didn’t.
You were laying in yourcot contemplating your existance in the grand skeem of things when a guard cameand got you leading you away to what looked like an interagation room.
Inside was a few peoplein business suits two yautja guards stood in the corners of the room as you weresat in a chair on the opposite side of the table.
Once the guard whoescorted you had left they turned their attention on you a moment passingbefore the one in the middle sighed and gave you a serious look.
“The King Xenomorph youhad been harboring has escaped our containment and we need you to retrieve it. Inreturn for doing so you will be released from jail and placed on monitored probation.”They explained showing you pictures and video of your Xeno escaping a largecage like cell most likely in the bowels of the station.
“You have hundreds ofyautja on this ship why not ask one of them?”
“Because this specificXeno is smarter than any we have seen before able to hide its trails and creatediversions. It also cannot be tracked by scent alone as it isn’t strong enoughto track long distances. Therefore, we need you to bring it back to us.”
“What if I say no?” Youasked receiving a shocked expression from the negotiator looking to their equallysurprised colleagues before back to you.
“You will rot in jailbefore being sent to earth to serve out the rest of your sentencing along with banishmentfrom returning here ever again.” They said as if it weren’t even an option
You really didn’t knowwhat to do but something made you want to go along with their plan though youknew you wouldn’t let them just catch him without a bit of work.
“Okay, Ill help you.”You said as they nodded leading you from the room and immediately taking you tothe lower decks of the station were all the machinery was and the enginesystems.
Looking around thecrowded area you knew he wouldn’t be here so you started to walk back towardsthe living quarters the group of officers following you closely as you walkedwatching for any sign of the Xeno.
You made it all the wayback to your housing unit when you started to notice signs of them Xeno. Kneelingdown by a floor vent you hit the wall hard twice smiling when you heard afamiliar trill sound out from the floor vent.
“Found him. Now yougotta catch him.” You smirked as Xeno burst out of the floor grate roaring ashe blocked them from approaching you seeming to be almost larger then all thetimes before.
The youngblood guardswere clearly born on the station as they stared at the Xeno in wide eyed shock unableto move as it snarled at the tail whipping around dangerously as it threatened toskewer anything the grew too close.
“This was not part ofthe agreement miss-“
“No where did you say Ihad to catch him and hand him over. I was to lure him out and well. He’s lured.”You snarked really hating these people in charge of the station.
Glancing around you werequickly drawing a crowd of bystanders most of them yautja who were cracking tohave a go at the xeno,
“I have a new deal.Seeing as he has clearly been here a while and he has never hurt any one evenwhen threatened we let him stay and see what happens. Scientists get a firsthandchance at observing a rare xenomorph.” You said seeing the wheels turning inthe main negotiators head.
They discussed briefly beforelooking back to you clearly upset seeing as you had some how gotten the betterhadn dealt in the end.
“Very well come with usand we will. Discuss in detail.” The person said as you patted Xeno’s shoulder invictory the two of you striding after the sulking agents.
It has been some timesince this whole commotion came about and now you were quite the infamous faceon the station as you were the girl who tamed a king xenomorph and convinced thestation to let you keep him none the less.
While the yautja wereequally disgusted and impressed by you for this feat you cared not as nothing madeyou happier than coming home to see your Xeno waitng for you. It was evenbetter when you got out of work to see him sitting there some how holding idleconversation with a curious child.
Walking home with Xenoat your side you realized you could very much get used to this new life ofyours.

Alien Franchise Thoughts
This weekend I happened to catch and rewatch Alien: Covenant. Right after that I caught and rewatched Aliens. This was sheerly through channel surfing luck that I watched these movies in this order. But, in doing so I connected some dots and had some realizations that gave me a new appreciation for the prequel series.
A Bit of Background
I can’t remember if I saw Alien or The Terminator first, so Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor get equal billing for being “the first” female action heroes I ever encountered. Prior to them I’d seen Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis watching action films with my dad. So seeing not Tom Skerrit’s Captain Dallas or John Hurt’s Kane but Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley take on the role of Action Hero was essential to my development as an eleven-year-old girl. I’m not even exaggerating for the sake of drama. Watching Ripley in Alien was one of the first examples I saw in media of a woman in a role I’d only seen taken on by male characters before. For this reason alone, the original Alien holds a special place in my heart.
The Original Series
I have mixed feelings about the franchise as a whole. I loved Alien and Aliens to me was just as good and is one of the few sequels that measures up to the original. It lost me at Alien 3 when they killed off Newt and Hicks in the opening crash land. Forcing Ripley into the “sole survivor” role becomes formulaic here and… honestly I’ve had no desire to rewatch Alien 3 and completely forget the entire plot other than the fact that it takes place in a prison setting and Ripley had to shave her head. And they killed off Ripley! I remember being very upset all around at Alien 3 and I think I mentally disowned it.
Alien: Resurrection brought me back around because Ripley was back! And there was Winona Ryder! However, Ripley wasn’t the same Ripley we remembered. She was some clone or hybrid or… I don’t really know what they were going for there. But, I looked at this film as a standalone almost AU installment and I’m actually very okay with it. Not my favorite by a longshot, but a slight redemption from Alien 3’s mess.
Alien vs. Predator
No. Just no. Denied. Why? What even? WHY?!
I’ve seen a few of these movies and if you’re a fan of big monsters fighting one another with a bunch of random humans caught in the middle, these movies might be your jam. If you’re a Predator or an Alien fan, though, it kind of doesn’t fit in with either in my opinion.
The Prequels
When I watched Prometheus I hadn’t done any research on it at all, so I had no idea it had anything to do with the Alien franchise. I saw a space-themed action-horror film with Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender involved and I was IN, man. Honorable mention to Logan Marshall-Green, who is also awesome but I didn't catch in the trailers. So he was a nice surprise.
The opening scene was unworldly and gorgeous, much like the opening of The Mists of Avalon, which is a weird comparison, I know. But I was enchanted by this opening scene much like I was as I watched Morgaine Le Fey float through the mist that served as a doorway to a magical world. We see an unknown being on an alien planet perform a mysterious ritual and then plummet into the water. The first clue was the title card, which even then I thought “Oh, cool! They did the Alien thing!” but hadn’t connected it as directly related. I’d just thought it was a subtle nod because of the Ridley Scott connection.
I loved Prometheus as a film. I had a very similar reaction to it that I had to the original Alien movie. We had an ensemble of characters, all with their own personalities and enough development to make us care. Noomi Rapace became the reluctant hero as opposed to the expected Charlize Theron, who had been in the Ripley role (“He’s not coming on my ship.”). As the Alien clues dropped, I picked them up and quickly (excitedly) realized the film was somehow connected – it had to be. For me, that was just the cherry on top of a fantastic film.
Alien: Covenant made me feel much like Alien 3 did. The ending of Prometheus had been hopeful, echoing both the endings of Alien and Aliens. Our hero Elizabeth Shaw had survived and would bring android David along to find the Engineers and get her answers. Ridley Scott himself spoke about a possible sequel involving Elizabeth and David trying to do just that.
And then we got Alien: Covenant. Elizabeth and David were nowhere to be found and instead we were (hastily) introduced to an entire new crew of characters whose development was severely lacking in the film. We don’t even know everyone’s paired up in romantic couples until people start dying. When David did finally appear to rescue everyone I was excited. Yes! Finally, a tie-in to Prometheus. And then we learn Elizabeth died suspiciously and the franchise is turned over to David. To say I was infuriated would be an understatement.
I was more excited about the project Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn spoke about at a comic-con panel that would’ve followed Alien and Aliens (and maybe retconned some stuff) than I was about whatever Ridley Scott did next (I still kind of am, if I’m honest). Why would someone take a franchise helmed by a powerhouse female action hero and then make its lead an insane android and his pet virus? Why would I want to follow this asshole instead of Shaw, Daniels, or even Vickers?
Final Analysis
Watching Aliens right on the heels of Alien: Covenant made it easier for me to make some connections and parallels. In Aliens, a group of marines attempts to travel to a space colony that lost contact to see what’s going on. Ripley is brought along (with Burke, that shit) as a consultant “just in case” (even though everyone treats her like she has a case of the vapors when she tells them about the xenomorphs). The premise makes little sense on the outset. However, when we later learn Burke’s true motivation it makes perfect sense. Burke believes Ripley, although he makes a show of the opposite. And he wants to bag an alien to bring home and sell to the highest bidder. When the soldiers start stomping carelessly around blowing holes in things with there big dumb weapons, it’s infuriating to the audience, knowing what we know. However, it’s also infuriating to Ripley and we’re reminded why she’s there. These are soldiers who, of course, have no idea what to do with an alien species and probably aren’t used to exploring alien environments.
This is very similar to what’s going on in Alien: Covenant. Not made clear in the film due to the character development scenes (such as “the last supper” prologue) being cut, this crew are explorers and colonists. They’re not astronauts or scientists. A few of the characters appear to be military escorts or officers. Of course they’re tromping around without a care in the world. They don’t know any better. Their captain, Jake Bronson, dies mid-journey and his second-in-command, Billy Crudup’s Oram, is super insecure about his new position. This is frequently shown in his interactions with Katherine Waterson’s No First Name Daniels, who was also Bronson’s wife. Daniels has a comradery and respect with the crew not present with Oram. So, when Oram has to start making decisions he’s acting more on his insecurity and his need to Do Something and be taken seriously than acting on the information and advice he’s given. Also, once we know the relationships between characters everyone’s bizarre anti-survival behavior makes a ton of sense. After a certain point in the film, everyone has lost a spouse and/or a ton of friends. Everyone is grieving, scared, and not at all trained to be doing what they’re doing, and they don’t have a Ripley on board to help guide them. “Game over, man! Game over!”
Yeah, Alien: Covenant is what happens when you make every character a Hudson.
Watching Ripley’s reaction to Bishop in Aliens reminded me how iffy Ash the A.I. was in Alien. You know, he got all murdery and everything.
Then I remembered – oh, yeah – Alien: Covenant is a prequel. This means David is an A.I. precursor of some kind to Ash… which means he’s a faulty A.I. Also, Ripley encountered creatures and situations no one had discovered before to our knowledge (due to everyone’s reaction to Ripley’s story in Aliens). This ultimately means no one can make it out of these prequels alive or it compromises Ripley’s established story.
David is a faulty A.I., which hasn’t yet been experienced by anyone living who has encountered androids in space exploration if we go by the example of Ash in Alien. Failsafes haven’t been given to androids yet to limit their emotional depths or put rules in place to prevent them from harming humans. He’s creating creatures that are new. No one knows they exist, so no one is prepared for them (just like the crew of the Nostromo wasn’t prepared for the xenomorphs in Alien). Even heavily trained soldiers, scientists, and astronauts will be encountering deadly things they don’t know are out there: a highly intelligent rogue A.I. capable of experiencing emotion and evolution, mutated weaponized creatures unlike anything they’ve ever seen before, and an alien virus that mutates its host and is undetectably ingested.
Guys, ain’t nobody emerging as the lone heroic survivor of anything in this franchise (except the fucking xenomorph).
Having digested and accepted that information, I am grimly awaiting what happens next, and I really hope with all my giddy little heart that theorized Aliens sequel Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn teased is going to happen. I’ll even take a video game version.
Hicks and Newt deserved better and I stand by that.
