What im hearing is:
Little crow feet outside my window bcs im feeding them- that’s besides the point!
Is there magic??? His shovel looks magic and they look magic
And do give me every detail you are thinking of for the series even if its in the distant future or not that relevant but you want to share
Tumblr media
Crows!! Cute!! Also sorry i didnt get to this sooner my laptop BROKE (still broken but usable) and my mom and i have been looking for someone to fix it. Ive been drawing with it sparingly to be careful.
YES there is magic. Of course im still working on this storywise but im getting characters designs n whatnot done right now. Dynamics n stuff. BUT i do have some refs i made before my laptop broke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like to draw out certain stuff so that it helps with descriptions in the future; i have the worst memory so it helps to be able to do so. (More beneath cut)
Im so excited for moon's shadow form. Oh my god. Its probably my favorite thing right now.
Fun thing about it is that in this form he can touch you but you cant touch him. Something something you can be cast in shadow but you cant take it off yk? He's still light sensitive like this though, so if the area hes in isn't dark enough or he's hit with anything too bright he just reverts back. At that point he'd just have to rely on normal hand to hand stuff and his sand lol. The shadow form is just better for sneaking and speed. Really, he's some amalgamative idea of the sandman and boogieman. I thought it fit well with his whole "naptime attendant gone wrong" thing.
Sun's design, however, is more like if you mixed a cowboy, wizard, and gravedigger together. I made it a while ago on a whim with no intention behind it but then i ended up thinking "ykw would be so awesome".
The hat dips to cover the crescent side of his face (not intentional on his part) to symbolize his resentment towards moon and how he basically damned him to an hourglass. His eyes are easier to see bc of this which could seem more trusting (eyes are the window to the soul or whatever), but the thing is thats not normal for him (as we know) so it's meant to make him look suspicious and looming to 4th wall viewers. There's also the fact that i just thought it was cool too.
He also doesn't get a second form. Moon's sneaky and weird so i thought it would fit to give him some freaky thing iykwim. Sun, however, is a pretty "in your face" kinda guy, so his look and fight style is more extravagant and boisterous. Lots of swinging amd yelling and boom bang zap! Despite the showiness he's actually a longer range fighter. Mainly because unlike moon, thousands of years ago, he wasn't often one to get violent with his hands. His weapon is just obnoxiously large too though.
They are still one animatronic and their transformation is still triggered by light. Instead of an AI chip though (which is still in there but long dead), they live through the work of a soul. They're still physically inorganic but as far as spiritually they're as close as they're gonna get to being human. Their life and functionailty is derived from the magic itself, not the machinery. Like if for some reason they lost all their magic they'd just drop dead from a battery life long since drained.
The hourglass has a carousel-like design to it purely as reference to moon's level in Help Wanted 2.
Sorry for rambling so much but this is what i've got for you so far! I have a general idea for the plot but im tryna to make it more than what it is rn, so i dont wanna share too much of that just yet in case i change or completely toss away an idea.

@rowzeoli replied to your post “@rowzeoli replied to your post “Do you think part...”:
There's a lot to tackle on this so I'll do my best to cover it all! So I totally get where you're coming from and to be fair yes there are some things in old articles that I don't agree with any more in deeming people having done things "first" which is part of the issue of not having a collective historical memory around actual play as it moves so quickly. Most of the issue isn't that readership is down it's that AI and venture capitalism is destroying journalism
Hey, sorry for taking a bit to respond; it's been a hectic week and I wanted to give it some thought and time.
I'll start off with the good: I really do, again, appreciate you engaging here, and on the strength of that alone I am going to at least give Rascal's free articles a good solid chance for a while; I have been, admittedly, tarring it with the brush of a lot of frustrations (see below) and I know it's relatively new and still finding its place and should get a bit more of my patience. I also should note that while your article did hit on a lot of the patterns that have turned me - and no small amount of others - off of a lot of AP/TTRPG journalism it is by no means the worst example. The things you credited Burrow's End for are, admittedly, more obscure single-episode events within a huge body of work. Or in other words: there are bylines in the space that make me go "oh this is going to be bad" and yours is not one of them.
With that said: I'm sorry, but Polygon's bias is not a matter of time crunch or lack of funding. There is no way that a time crunch or lack of funding would consistently, over years (this was already word on the street at latest when EXU Calamity came out almost 2 years ago) result in a message of "D20 can do no wrong, and Critical Role rarely does right." If it were throwing out harsh criticism or glowing praise for a wide variety of shows, sure, that seems like it could come from not having a lot of time...but this goes beyond coincidence. It's a reputation that long precedes your entry into the field. As some others in the replies have noted, I might have written the most about it on Tumblr, but it's at this point not an uncommon observation. This also isn't an issue for other publications in a similar "nerd stuff" space - there's plenty of articles on, say, Dicebreaker or Comicbook.com that I don't care for, either because I disagree with the opinion or I think the analysis isn't really worthwhile, but those tend to at least have a mix of positive and critical articles about most shows. When I said you could treat Polygon articles like Madlibs, I meant it. And so I think it's great that you are no longer chasing "groundbreaking", for example, is not a solid ground for an article, but this also is showing me that even relatively new journalists are, very early on, starting with this exact formula. In some ways, that's more damning.
I do also want to add that I'm again, sympathetic to the lack of resources and to coming into a field with passionate and nitpicky fans who have been here for years. Not knowing about a single Critical Role one-shot from 2018 is something that I'd have been much more lenient about if it weren't hitting those repetitive notes of "D20 is great/this thing is groundbreaking/look at the production values." But the other article I posted, also from Polygon but not written by you, is, to be honest, pretty inexcusable. I get there's a lot of lost institutional memory...but either being unaware of, or ignoring the fact that there are a huge number of long-running actual play podcasts that play longform campaigns? That's pretty much on par, in terms of whether your audience trusts you, of the New York Times international news desk not being able to locate Russia on a map (though obviously with far less serious real-world ramifications). (The fact that this was written by a prominent actual play scholar meanwhile is like, I don't know, Neil DeGrasse Tyson not knowing how gravity works, but that's a separate topic).
And again, I get these are your colleagues. I have the luxury of being able to run my mouth without putting my livelihood at stake, and that's not true for people within the industry. I do not expect you to say anything ill about them, nor would I judge any specific individual for getting published in Polygon since I get that people are pitching to a number of sites so that they can get paid! But when I say "Polygon's AP/TTRPG coverage is at needs-a-change-of-leadership levels of bad" I am not alone in this, and it's something that has probably been true for easily 3+ years if not longer. Because it's one of the more prominent publications in the space (ironically, due to Justin McElroy of TAZ being a founder, and the fact that its videogame division is quite good and has had some viral videos, it had enviable name recognition among AP fans that it's only squandered since) it really is at a point where hitting that same formula in any AP journalism - claiming everything is groundbreaking, putting an emphasis on high production values, D20 good and CR bad - makes fans go "oh, more of this bullshit." I don't want to say you can't talk about these things - I definitely do not want to say that you cannot criticize Critical Role - but that specific well is has been poisoned for a long time. If someone hits these points it feels, whether or not it is true, that they're trying to be provocative by going against popular fan opinion, but are simultaneously just saying the same thing we've seen a million times before.
I believe wholeheartedly that from your perspective the competition is AI - and I don't want AI articles either. On the other hand, in terms of what I think fans who are in my position are turning to, it's not AI articles (I'm certainly not). If I want analysis, I'm probably, at this point, going to social media; I am not the only person who writes longform meta or analysis for fun, and I'll seek others who do out. I'm not personally a video essay person, but plenty are, and that's out there too. I'm not going there for reporting on news (I think the Dnd Shorts OGL debacle made it clear that actual journalists are very necessary) but yeah, if I want criticism or analysis? I'm going there instead, especially since there often is that missing institutional memory. If I do want journalism, at this point, some of the bigger shows are getting writeups in less niche publications, particularly Critical Role and D20, as is news of more major tabletop games. It's infrequent and it doesn't highlight indie works, but it tends to be, if nothing else, lacking in major errors or obvious bias. If I want to hear from cast members, at least four of the shows I watch or listen to have regular talkback shows, and Dropout regularly talks to AP/TTRPG figures on Adventuring Academy, and a lot of those shows take viewer questions. Which, again, probably not heartening to hear the competition is even tighter, but I guess my point is I hope it's possible, even with very limited resources, to move away from the above "novelty and production values above all" pattern because even that would do a lot of needed work to rebuild reader trust - and I'm going to be checking out Rascal in the hopes that it can.

Man, one of the really annoying things about the whole ai art, large language model, sorta stuff is that I still find certain kinds of AI models fascinating!
I used to go back and forth on how to make a "better" Markov chain generator, with the intention of giving it my fics as a dataset and seeing some charming nonsense from its output. I occasionally try to figure out how to make something that would find a series of best-matches between target phonemes to data phonemes to make sentence-mixing easier. I still, every so often, have a go at replicating the "Infinite Jukebox" I loved playing with years ago, back before it got snapped up and left to rot by Spotify.
The kinds of AI where you can pop it open and see, "ah yes, this is what it's calculating, and why." With a basic Markov generator, I can open up the model, look at "warm: , 24 embrace 7 and 7 sun 4" and understand why it keeps making infinite chains of adjectives.
Hell, there was a cool video I saw the other day about writing and pitting small chess bots against each other, and how to go about making the best ones.
But noooooo, the only time I ever see people talk about AI is when some "we have evolved beyond the need for art" dipshit brags about being able to make John Cena say the n-word or generate generic "anime-realism" images of some chick with HH-cups.

BTW i have been listening to the everything everything song u replied to my ask w AND ITS SOOOOOOOOO FAUCKING GOOOOOOOD
HELL YES I'M SO GLAD.... Everything Everything my favorite band of the world....
ALSO I'll derail this ask (sorry! you fell into my music trap) to make recommendations on how to get into their stuff since they have quite a few albums now ^-^ I'll go in order of most accessible album to least :
Get To Heaven : Their best album and probably their most well known one.. I started with this one so of course I am biased BUT. it is the most consistent one in terms of song quality in my opinion. It has a lot of very abrasive sounds, prominent bass (for the bassheads in the crowd <3), same with the drums, the singer makes a lot of funny sounds like eehee and ahaaa! and ooh!!, it's a good time. Notable songs (by that I mean my favorites) : (Well the thing is. The entirety is good. Just don't listen to No Reptiles it's stupid. HOWEVER,) Regret, Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread, Blast Doors, Hapsburg Lippp and Only As Good As My God are my big preferences in there. If you like quieter song listen to the others in priority I'd say. OH OH AND WHEEL. You should check The Wheel, see if it's turning now etc BONUS : BANGING CONCERT with BANGING RECORDING HERE https://youtu.be/qYAFCVlLWIk as a wise man once said : "I hope they got some nasty fucking sloppy after this sessio,n"
Man Alive : Baby's very first album!! This one I would say is quite depressing but quite catchy as well.. Half of the songs in there are a bit too empty to my personal taste BUUUUT the other half has a talent to make me writhe and cry on the flour. Augh. The sounds are lighter in this one but our good friend mister Johnathan Every love to yell so much it compensates largely. Notable songs : MY KZ UR BF, Qwerty Finger, Schoolin', Photoshop Handsome, Suffragette Suffragette, Come Alive Diana, and from the deluxe version I would say the most important ones to check out are DNA Dump and Wizard Talk BONUS : They collaborated with an ensemble for a concert check it out definitely they're so small in it and they are having so much fun and and there is a brass section it is so charming https://youtu.be/oCH_YGD7oDc AND you should check the demo of MY KZ UR BF. It makes me SAD! https://youtu.be/VaoHgQts5ek The roughness of it only conveys the message of it better and they have chimes in it. It's GOOD.
Raw Data Feel : Most recent released album, and it's about how we love phone more than god. Kind of. I'd describe this one as having a very dreamlike quality. It talks about apocalypse and robots and computers and how they are "terrifying and a bit sexy". They really said that. I wouldn't say it sounds more electronic than the others but it has a "blurred" artificial layer to it that makes it very unique. OH AND they did something cool with ai stuff before everyone else so props to them for that. Notable songs : Bad Friday, Pizza Boy, Metroland Is Burning, Leviathan and HEX. MY GOD LISTEN TO HEX. IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD.
Arc : A mixed bag of mehh songs and really REALLY STRONG ONES. Maybe the most sadness inducing album of theirs. It REEKS of despair. Badly. I'm saying that as a good thing. Album that feels like the dusty attic of deceased loved ones on a cold spring morning.. Notable songs : Cough Cough, Torso Of The Week, Choice Mountain, Undrowned, Radiant LISTEN TO RADIANT GOD. If you like those check Kemosabe, No Plan and Justice too. I like these very much.
A Fever Dream : ARGUABLY THEIR WORSE ALBUM. It's very quiet and empty except for a few tunes. I do think it has a very particular atmosphere that I personally ended up warming up to. Don't look up the meanings for the lyrics it's all kind of boring I think you should think about characters instead. Notable songs : Night Of The Long Knives, Desire, Good Shot Good Soldier, Run The Numbers. <- The most impactful songs to me. White Whale makes me very sad if I think about it too. Wahh
RE-ANIMATOR : It's fine. I don't have very strong opinions on this one. It has some really good songs in it. I think the thing with this one is the lyrics are a lot simpler than the others and I like the weirdness better. But it still is worth checking out those guys know how to make music. Notable songs : Big Climb, Planets, Black Hyena, Violent Sun. BONUS : They released SUPERNORMAL as a single around the time of that album and it's better than a good portions of the songs in it so check it out lol. The other single released for this album is the worst song they ever made don't worry about it.
BONUS OF BONUS : There's a playlist of a bunch of unreleased/demos/B-sides on youube if you are really motivated to check many things, some of them were in the Man Alive deluxe version though. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYCuy2Tpolc8GY7GQYX5_uYdgYpftKQ7V
Uhh I might have forgotten things but. If you don't know them that's a starting point that you can bounce off of. Have fun with tunes yayy <3

Proper noun: Ceetee Pronouns: It/Its* Common nouns: Girlthing, Tranny, Doll Adjectives: Trans, Mixed-Race, Aegosexual, Polyamorous, Plural Verbs: Game Design, Shitposting, Flirting
🖋 Last edited: 5/20/24
Unreasonably proud of that stupid grammar joke. Anyway yes, I'm Ceetee. While I am plural, I try to avoid the use of first person plural pronouns, except when we are specifically talking about our experiences with DID/Plurality. We also do our best to conceal who is fronting at all times (you can read more about that in the links about gender and plurality at the bottom of this post).
I'm a dork with very VERY strong opinions that I am VERY VERY vocal about. If you do not share those opinions, that is perfectly fine and probably to be expected. Just know that I am very obnoxious about them, so you will see them a lot. I have a lot of confidence on my stances and it is very unearned! That said I'm always happy to actually discuss this stuff, and also perfectly understanding of people unfollowing over it! Never feel like you HAVE to follow me for whatever obligation. Curate your feed, damn it!
For the pronoun exceptions mentioned above, It/Its are my pronouns for most people. If you aren't willing to call me that, well, I can't stop you. Use whatever you want, but I will absolutely be judging you for it. Though there are some exceptions. For people I'm intimate with (Romantic partners and people I'm in a QPR with), my pronouns are It/She. If you work for my HRT clinic my pronouns are She/Her because like fuck am I risking my HRT just because my doctor doesn't understand my gender. If you are a coworker my pronouns are He/Him and also I don't have a tumblr, please block me immediately, for both of our sakes.
I have a NSFW sideblog. You can probably guess its name pretty easily. If you can't, I'm happy to give it to anyone brave enough to DM me or send me an ask off anon. In fact, you can ask me basically anything about my life and I'll happily answer. I'm a pretty open book like that.
Rambles
I tend to ramble about various things. Usually when I do, I tag it as #text essay. Sometimes about gender and my views on it, but also just... stuff in general. Here is a list of some of the general stuff. Its usually just stupid pointless stuff, but its a good look into how my brain works.
The Darkspore Rant (Long)
Pokemon Picross Monetization Model
Movement in VR
Pokemon Eggs, and The Fundamental Nature of the Pokemon Multiverse (Long)
Time is Fake as Hell
Fighters Should Have Magic
Where I Stand in Regards to AI Art
Identity stuff:
Bespoke Genders (Part 1)
On Detransition (Part 2)
Plurality (Part 2.5)
Plurality and Being Transgender (Part 3)
Fandom shit:
Pokemon Eggs, and the Fundamental Nature of the Pokemon Multiverse (Long)
List of FFXIV OCs (LONG. Its also a recap of 4 years of weekly FC RP)
Posts others have made but are very relevant to me and who I am:
Back When I Was A Boy (Not every trans femme used to be a boy, but I did and that is important to me)
The Scorpion and The Frog (I desperately need to get a tattoo of a scorpion and a frog. I can't read this without crying)
Tags
#text essay - As mentioned above, I use this for when my rambles go very very very long. The ones I like the most or feel are important enough I also add to this pinned.
#Zenos ♥ - For the FFXIV Character that I am super normal about (lying).
#dnd hate train - A tag that exists for blacklisting purposes at the request of a close friend. As a designer, I fucking HATE Dungeons and Dragons. I hate it a lot. And I talk a lot about how much I hate it.
#laugh rule - For that age old tumblr rule: "If it makes you actually genuinely Laugh Out Loud, you have to reblog it."
#peer reviewed tags - another, more modern tumblr rule. If I screenshot someones tags to share them, I add this tag to it.
#dudes rock - Essentially, just a bunch of guys doing stuff that is just 'boys being boys' in the fun sense and not the rapey sense, but also just a reminder that the world is better with these dudes in it, and a way for me to find happiness is the masculinity that made my childhood miserable.
#partner gushing - For when I am being GAY AS HELL about my partners, or reblogging something and going 'its because of one of them'
#talking to myself and #talking about myself - Conversations between me and my alters, and talking about my relationships with my alters, respectively. More details here.
I also just... ramble in the tags. A lot. I just add so much commentary in the tags. You will see A LOT of rambles.

Don’t get me wrong, while I can see some instances where ai writing could be useful and be a tool for writers (if the data the ai was trained on was regulated/ethically sourced), the concept as a whole is utterly depressing to me as a writer.
My family is trying to convince me that this is just like any new technology out there--”people said the same thing about cloud software vs. server rooms and look at us now!” but this feels different. As a writer, my words are an extension of myself, of my thoughts and emotions. The idea of someone taking my words and feeding into their AI without my permission to create whatever generated writing they want that they can profit off of--it just doesn’t sit right.
Yes, human writers are influenced by one another and build off each other’s ideas all the time, but each of them are in turn influenced by their own perspectives. They can think “what if x happens?” or “instead of x how about y?” but currently, AI can’t do that. It just takes from whatever data is at its disposal that matches the user’s prompt. It can mix and remix it, but at the end of the day, it can only create stuff based off whatever human writing it is fed.
As much as I enjoy the editing/revision process of writing, I can’t fathom submitting a prompt for a story idea and let an AI write the barebones version of it. I love the discovery process of an early rough draft. It’s messy and ugly but raw and vulnerable in ways that an ai writing couldn’t ever quite capture.
I hate being afraid of new technology--I don’t want to be that Old Person who refuses to accept new technological innovations. I want to be excited by it, because it is cool that we have technology that can emulate writing/art, but I just dread the numerous ways it could be used maliciously.

Hi
So, for the like 3 of you that maybe have wondered where have I been the last weeks, well, basically playing FF7 Rebirth and chilling on cohost.
Thing is, after the whole tumblr selling our data to train ai models fiasco, I was kinda in shock and decided to leave this place. I uninstalled the app from my phone, did backups of my blogs (which I wasn't gonna delete, just stop uploading), went to cohost and started posting there (it's super chill btw, it's like early tumblr mixed with old twitter, in case you're wondering). All while processing what to do next, because frankly, we've all felt that tumblr is somewhat on decline and seeing all the bad stuff it's CEO has done as of late -including threats of nuking the site this year-, the last few years always felt like there was an invisible countdown on this website all the time.
But still, I'm not gonna pretend I'm not gonna miss it, if not tumblr per se, certainly some of the people I've met here who are my mutuals of many years, many of which I've become friends with. Also, despite everything, I still think this is a good platform for posting art. Cohost has its good things (like being WAY more relaxed about NSFW stuff), but there are more file size restrictions, photosets are limited to fewer pictures, etc. There might be some ways to improve that besides what the staff there is doing, since cohost lets you edit posts in many more ways than tumblr (read somewhere that it was tumblr, but for hornier and more linux savy people), so there's also that.
Anyway, after processing everything that happened, and understanding that one way or another, my art's probably gonna be scraped from the internet nevertheless, even if tumblr offers an opt out option (that doesn't even consider the people that tumblr decides to sell our stuff to, let alone the fact that it also arrived so late that we probably everything was already scraped to begin with) even if I glaze it or whatever, I kinda made peace with what happened. I'm still weary about uploading, or where to do it. Yes, I know that I don't have huge numbers or a distinctive enough style for people to copy, but I also know that, nevertheless, not only my art, but the things I've written, the photos I've taken, etc., all has been fed into that slot machine of generating content. If anything, with the days I've noticed I'm way more angry at techbros as usual, and especially tumblr ceo and part of it's staff -I know that not everyone agrees with him and that there are good people in the staff, but there's also sycophants, professional "yes man"s and the like-.
So, after all that, I thought, well, might as well go back. But the thing is that, after spending a couple of weeks away (and missing the posts I imagine came up here both about the Cerveza Cristal meme and about Toriyama's death, among other things), coming back here has been weird, like, for better or worse, it has lost its appeal. I've read a couple of posts before writing this one and I was like "has it always been like this here?".
So, what now? I have no clue. I don't think I'm gonna download the mobile app again, if anything, I've noticed how much time it consumed to just check tumblr with the frequency I used to, so I don't feel like doing that anymore. I think I might pop up here from time to time, maybe return to live blogging Critical Role and Candela Obscura. Will probably like more stuff than the one I post and reblog. Still deciding if I should post new art stuff here, we'll see.
Anyway, if any of you have cohost, you can find me there

Do not apologise at all for responding late!! Holiday burnout is so real, theres sm to organise so I understand completely 😅. I hope youre getting some rest between xmas and the new year, or that at least whatever you have planned isnt too hard on you :)
I am 100% willing to believe you blessed my flight lmao, hopefully it works on the way back as well :D
Is it weird to say i dont think ive ever had a blackberry before?? Idk i might have had one when i was a kid but when you mentioned the blackberry jam I completely blanked. So um. Hope it was good?
Oh no your cat!! D: Hope he's all better now
YES I WOULD LOVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT MALAYSIAN FOOD!! I would show u pics but um 🧍->🏃‍♂️💨. Ur gonna have to google it king LOL. The first day back my dad and I went out to a mamak stall (basically just a restaurant for malay-chinese-indian food), and I had roti canai (a type of flatbread with curry) and teh tarik, which I have missed dearly. I dont typically like normal english breakfast tea so getting to have authentic teh tarik was SO GOOD. Teh tarik (translating to "pulled tea") is made with condensed milk and gets its name from how after the drink is mixed it gets continuously poured over and over from one container to another until it gets super frothy.
I've also been getting reacquainted with my favourite fruits 🥰 that you cant get in Australia like mangosteen and jambu air (ai-yer). Mangos and dragon fruit you can get in australia but. um. Theyre bad. They just taste like sweet water. Also unfortunately for me rambutan i havent been able to find rambutan 😔😔. Those look similar to lychee but they taste pretty different, less tangy and sweeter.
Ive gone out with a friend to have cendol (c promounced as a "ch") which is a cold desert with coconut milk and rice jelly, along with other toppings should you choose it. Im also in the process of convincing my bff to do a 3h road trip with me specifically for food in a city called Ipoh 😭 wish me luck.
AND, im getting one of my relatives to teach me how to make rendang and char kway teow. The rendang specifically because the one she makes i prefer over what's usually made in restuarants. I think it's a state difference in recipes or smtg? So the ones you'll find in restuarants are KL/Selangor rendang and she makes from Kedah. Thats just a theory tho im not actually sure.
🧍 i realise this ask has become like 70% about food so i apologise. But. In my defense you asked >:) /j
ANYWAY. I hope youve gotten a break from the holiday work or at least have one coming up <33 Take care of yourself; indulge in your cheeses :D

SUN ANON HELLOOOOOO im so excited to hear you got those desserts, those sound AMAZING...... also i looked up all the foods you mentioned and MAN THESE LOOK GOOD.... im a shrimp lover im gazing so hard at the char kway teow...... 👀👀👀👀👀 also holy shit these fruits look so cool???? Thats WILD ive literally never heard of these before and im having a lot of fun looking them up online and reading about their flavours and stuff!!!! Incredibly curious about mangosteen, i was not expecting it to be white inside when i looked it up and just like, the contrast of the purplish rind vs the white insides is SO neat to look at, like that feels really good on my eyeballs if that makes sense JSDBEKDNMDD also also teh tarik sounds and looks amazing i want to try that SO bad now omg
Its so funny you say that about blackberries bc where i live we have them literally growing everywhere on the side of the road AKDNWKDNKWDN in the summer when they start putting out fruit one of my roommates will sometimes go out and just pick a bunch for the whole household, and they always taste SOOOOO much better than the store-bought ones. Im genuinely not sure how to describe the taste of blackberry other than like. Its very sweet but also very tart (i go for the slightly less ripe ones tbh bc i prefer tart things to super sweet) at the same time, and sorta pops in your mouth a little bit when you chew it. Honestly its one of my favorite fruits i would highly recommend them if you can find em anywhere!!!!
My resolution this year is a bit silly but i wanted to go for a very fun easy one, so its to use every sticker i own this year :] ive already started by putting a few on the creeper minifridge that my roomie got me for xmas 😂😂😂😂😂😂 and i have some scrapbook ideas as well to use my fancier ones that my friends have gotten me!!!! Also you are so valid about the writing-- tbh if you wrote more than expected then it sounds like you succeeded instead of failed, so thats awesome!!! :DDD
I hope you're doing well on your travels, sun anon!! And when the time comes may your flight back to Australia be as peaceful and pleasant as the one you experienced when you left it :]

Dream Diary Entry #1
I have just woke from a bizarre ass creepy dream about many things, that I want to get out of my head by writing it down. Many things occured in this dream but two of the most standout things are these:
1 . I dreamt about an outdoor playground for adults who could play on it dressed as their OCs. Not *everyone* was dressed up in elaborate character outfits, it seemed just that many were. A majority of them were based off Discord from My Little Pony and various Centaurworld characters. Bizarrely far less of the fur suiter kind of sort than you would expect.
And 2. Dreamt I came upon a bunch of old VHS tapes and dvds of "Horsin' Around" in my house. Yes THAT "Horsin' Around", from the Bojack Horseman universe, back in the 90s... With special edition bonus features and everything for episodes that do not exist. I salvaged a box of these somehow in a rescue from their mass destruction, probably at a neighborhood yard sale or something.
Here is where the dream goes from "collected usual muddle of obvious niche memories and interests" to just outright batshit territory. Forget about number 1 cos it has no relevance. Maybe except that I think I was possibly still in costume, while doing all this DVD stuff. The 1st half was just straightforward plain wholesome interactions and boring conversation with family and friends dressed up- bizarrely normal, at least by comparison with this half. You'd think it'd be otherwise right?
So yknow the old thing about how one tells if you're having a dream bc you cannot READ or do math in dreams? Yeah. That does not apply to me. I often CAN read. I can read so clear and easily I even recall my own dream texts or magazine pages and signage. Maybe I don't for all I know "see" real letters but whatever brain magic your dreams do to convince you that you just spoke to Mary Kate and Ashley while wearing a business suit and having tea on the ceiling, that's the same magic that convinces me my brain saw actual text symbols instead of probably distorted AI art symbolic "impressions of an idea" of text.
Anyway. So I look at all these lost media dvds and one of them has among the bonus material menu some extra scene deleted scenes, some cooking show guest footage, interviews, Herb and Bojack/cast commentary, and finally something called "peach vision", or something to that similar surreal effect, dream is fading off by this point. We'll just refer to it as that cos it feels right.
Peach Vision, as we will call it, appeared to be nothing but just the bizarre added filter of placing shiny black dot 'baby seal' style eyes and thick black closed emoji eye lines on all the spots where the character eyeballs should be in every episode or bit of bonus footage...( ^_^, @_@, -_-, *_* ×_×, stuff like that.) The result of Peach Vision appears to not do much to change anything in the episode script, it just gives a stupid goofy Tiktok style cartoon filter to everything in the footage. But the result is SO UNNERVING. I actually want to see someone Photoshop this. Its like a Creepy Pasta. And on the back of the dvd cover, amusingly, they acknowledged this:
"Who on earth wanted this, we do not know. Some weirdos. Why in the heck they wanted it, on god's green earth, we do not know. We think this is pointless and looks kinda stupid. Kinda creepy really. But whatever."
I kid you not, the back of the dvds actually said that. Almost sounds like ol BJ himself doesn't it?
And as the footage of "Horsin Around" played while under Peach Vision, my dream just barely shyed away from being "quirky innocent fun dream" to "actually this is sorta legit nightmare fuel creepy a bit". Cos the footage of Bojack with those (oO)=(oO) shiny tiny black dot baby seal eyes, started to glitch. The dvd on play buffered and like a vinyl record does if you scratch it or rotate it slowly, began to repeat itself over and over (one line I remember being stuck in repeat was Bojack saying something about mixing melted caramel in a bowl, and being like "C-C-CARA, CARA, CARA, mmmmmm-m-mel mel mel...") and to distort audio to a low drone. Sometimes the footage would turn black and white while freezing thru the buffer, even though this is something neither a DVD nor any kind of media far as I know can ever do. To my recollection VHS tapes will never do this either I think even if severely damaged but I may be wrong. It was genuinely unsettling how out of nowhere this was, enough to make me leave the living room and do assorted blurry quick other unrelated dream shenanigans so I could avoid it. But I pretty soon woke up.
Anyway this does not have a point beyond serving as my own dream journal log nonsense, but if anyone is obliged, please make a bunch of Photoshopped creepy pasta Bojack Horseman images, where the cast all have big black X'd out, or shiny dot eyes. It really would satisfy my morbid weird curiosity, I wanna know if it would be as creepy as my dream in real life.

Is Lady Terror an original female character or, like, the human personification of the Terror ship? Like Doctor Who and Idris/Tardis?
OH MAN NONNIE! FUNNY YOU SAY THAT!!!
So yes. SHE IS an original female character... but as I originally conceived her she was, in part, a human personification of the ship.
because you see, I'm a whore about television shows. Sometimes I mix and match them for au's to fit my needs, even. And at around the time I re-watched the terror in the early months of this year and summarily got myself INTO this mess, I was also watching 1899, which everyone was pissed about netflix cancelling (and I completely understand why- just another on a whole laundry list of genuinely amazing shows that were not given what they were due- my personal grievance among the likes of The OA and Teenage Bounty Hunters... seriously it's such a shame), and that having a bit of a (spoilers) sci-fi twist in it got the gears turning for what the lady terror thing would actually become. It was just a nickname- one for the AI (and one that could conceivably be reader inserted) that ran the terror SPACE ship, and who happened to have the ability to pop into their alternative cryosleep victorian reality- and one that francis fell (and falls) in love with... again and again and again upon every loop on the ship.
But then I got Serious about the plot, and came up with some stuff that was even better in the context of the plain ol canon context, but the nickname stuck like feathers on tar (because in fairness it is a DAMN good nickname). But now divorced from its original context it still holds the same amount of weight for me- if not MORE than it ever did. Now it has a nasty and even sexist implication to the men who gave it to her (since she was originally designated to the HMS EREBUS, but over the course of the story ends up spending more and more time on Terror... so there you have it)... but also I think of all the things that Francis himself says a ship is to a man... and I think a lot also about how much of a "terror" that she herself is also by defying a lot of the rules that such an objectifying nickname might lay out for her (as so many of them tend to do). And it's just too bloody good and delicious to think about and I can't let it go for the life of me now 😂😂😂So there you have it. Lady Terror: Origins

Copyright Consequentialism
I've seen a lot of discourse on AI art. There's not-so-solid arguments against it, there's solid arguments against it, there's good solid debate about the actual facts, there's stuff that's... less like that. I'm going to stay out of most of it, I understand a lot of this stuff is motivated by people trying to protect their or their friends' side gig.
But an attitude I implicitly see crop up sometimes is:
The same image might be copyright infringement, or might not be copyright infringement, depending solely on the method of its production.
Obviously, motive matters, but it doesn't override the core question of whether copyright infringement is going on. Remember, copyright infringement is a legal question, not a moral one! It's a question of whether there exists some original copyright holder(s) with actual claim to an image, and whether that holder should get to assert legal rights. It's a little more complicated than pixel-to-pixel correspondence, clearly the gist of an image can be a violation, but this has limits: Disney cannot claim the rights to every white-on-blue title card (even if their board of directors would like to and has probably tried).
Moving on, look at this post by @vaspider. The post's core claim (some of the images in the AI training set are clearly copyrighted) is 100% correct! Even the most strident AI-supporter isn't denying that copyrighted images are part of the dataset. The actual debate around this point relies on a definition of fair use, and whether or not it is 'fair use' of an image to tweak your model's variables using it.
But looking at the examples given, I find myself asking a different question.
Is this art, in itself, actually objectionable? Let's grab one of those pseudowatermarked images from the post, so that you know I'm not cherry-picking examples, and ask:
If this was made by a human artist (without the watermarks, we all agree AI can make something like this without the watermarks), would you argue that's a copyright violation?.
Tumblr media
I think 'yes' is a very, very hard position to defend. I did some sleuthing (using that other product of webpage crawlers, google image search), and the closest artwork I could find, which replicates both all elements (horned serpentine dragon, vaguely east asian two-floor house, elevation differences, trees) and their general look, is this:
Tumblr media
(https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Oodyqv)
(for those interested, the image is from 2020, so it probably got included in stablediffusion's training data; this is what the average case of art theft looks like in practice)
Are these images similar? Yes! If you mixed those two up with a hundred random pictures, I'd be able to match them reliably. If you used a short sentence to describe them, the sentences might equally apply to both. If you told me both artists were given vague but identical instructions, I'd believe you.
But the images aren't that similar. The arrangement of the elements is completely different. The background, lighting, and details match in no way. The AI's flaws, mostly in the dragon's lower body and teeth, are evident. The actual dragon and actual house match only abstractly: shape, palette, texture, scale, scales, and details are all different.
If I myself drew the first picture, that wouldn't infringe on the second's copyright. If I drew the first after seeing the second, that wouldn't infringe on the second's copyright. If I drew the first after being explicitly inspired by the second and setting out with the intent to draw a teal horned dragon coiled around an Asian house in the mountains, then there's a lot of final products that could infringe on the second's copyright, but the first image is not one of them. It just doesn't reach the threshold: not every blonde elf archer in a green tunic is Legolas, and not every teal dragon is this specific one.
The post I linked ends with the following informative graphic:
Tumblr media
Leaving aside the absurd apparent claim (AI simply glues recognizable chunks of art together), it's notable for trying to create a meaningful distinction between the process of creation for humans and AIs, which it only tenuously relates to the actual output.
(sidenote, if AI is using art for samples, it would do great with fine details but struggle to compose a big picture, right? but look at the dragon image! it looks great at first glance, but zoom in on little details like its teeth and tail and things stop adding up; it's the opposite of what you'd expect!).
But of course, the process doesn't matter at all! If a human created such a stolen-art collage, that'd be textbook copyright infringement. And if an AI created the image on the left, it consequently would not be.
This is what I mean by copyright consequentialism: the stance that copyright violation is a quality inherent to a work, not to the second work's creator's intent, prior knowledge, or cited inspiration. Other factors might matter (innocent infringement is a thing), but they mostly matter when determining punishment, not when re-asserting the original artist's rights.
If you accidentally draw something too similar to someone's copyrighted design, you have to stop doing that. If you drew something that wasn't too similar, you don't have to stop. Copyright gives you rights over an image and some reasonable range of variants: not over all pictures that contain teal dragons, even when the inspiration is there.
And extending that back to the average case of AI art compared to its closest pre-existent inspiration... I just don't think there's a case, in the average situation. If you create something that's too similar, the artist can sue you with no changes to the law required, but that's trivial to avoid: just run the same prompt a few more times and pick whichever looks least copyright-violatingish.
This doesn't quite close the door on copyright arguments. Maybe art created by stable diffusion doesn't innately infringe on copyright, but the process of creating stable diffusion itself does! But the process of crawling and indexing images is well-established as fair use (with Google very interested in keeping it that way), so you'd have to specifically target the step where hundreds of terabytes of images turn into 2 gigabytes of numbers. And if any step in the whole process could be considered transformative, I think it'd be that one.
(Also, I can't help but feel people wouldn't rail against stable diffusion if there was a single closed-source copy, only used for research purposes, with all generated art deleted afterwards, suggesting their issue does not lie with the model's mere existence)
When do we need pushback against AI? When it violates privacy by accessing private data. When it's used as an excuse to fire artists and replace them with subpar automatons. When state-of-the-art image generation models are rendered proprietary, or companies try to claim copyright over their outputs. But these issues are quite a way upstream or downstream of the actual act of creating and using the model: and fighting for a radical change to the meaning of 'fair use' is unlikely to succeed and likely to backfire if it does.
(what this post isn't about: the callous attitude of some pro-AI discoursers, the genuine economic struggles of being an artist in the digital age, the economic impact of AI on those artists, the hard problem of consciousness, elon musk, or the subjective quality of AI art: thank you, and please stay civil)

I’m not done praising you
I couldn’t stop thinking about that yunho fic today it’s so damn good 😫 I normally dislike AI type of stuff (ex machina scarred me) but this was so unique and gut wrenchingly sad :( to have a cyborg that’s a copy of a loved one that you lost and you can’t exactly move on from their death (I’m assuming he died) because if you ever miss them or feel overwhelming sadness, you can just call your cyborg and there he is :( I guess it’s a good thing but also a bad thing because u can never move on and be at peace and he’ll never be the way you remembered him as much as you try to ignore that fact.
I’m sorry if it’s weird that I’m saying all this over a smut but it was so good that I forgot it’s smut 😭 I have to know, how did you come up with this idea? It’s just so unique and interesting. You don’t have to tell me tho!
Tumblr media
“i’m not done praising you” i’m on the floor rnnnnn sobbing ;; ohh god ex machina was so traumatizing fnr i feel that 😭 yes exactly!! it’s def comforting bc you’d be able to keep him looking and “acting” like your loved one but it’ll only lead to more pain bc it’ll never be quite right and plus you’ll never be able to move on from it and just be stuck in the same endless loop of temporary comfort and a deep sense of grief that won’t be healed until you face reality 💔
nooo it’s not weird at all!! i love discussions like this plus it was smut mixed with a really sad concept so it wasn’t like it was just filth on its own lol. so originally i wanted to write a prometheus themed story but i realized that would have to be so much more fleshed out so i’ll def be saving that for later! so instead i just went with the android thing but i was like ohhh what if the android resembles yn’s lost love?? and then i just kinda wrote it out to see where it took me :)

dreamwidth update: eh, what the hell
or: Sev's Adventures With ChatGPT
This is not an article defending AI scraping programs in any way. I find their existence worrisome and exploitative. However, while reading what's going down at AO3 with regards to AI-generated fanworks - more specifically, writing - I realized I actually don't know a lot about what these kinds of things actually produce.
I am, of course, teh lady who thought the band was actually called One Directional, so. No wonder.
But I decided I would take a little look and see what the concerns are with regards to written fanworks. (Again, this is in NO way defending the way these programs were trained on the backs of content written by others. That's separate.) I wanted to see what a fanwork might look like coming out of one of these guys.
I wanted to see how - threatening? - AI-generated content is at the moment only in terms of comparison to other fanfictions. Again, this says nothing about legal use or existence as a transformative work. I wanted to see if I could make it make me a fanfiction.
So if you, too, were curious about it, but didn't want to use the AI guy / were too lazy to do so, here's my short 15 minute experiment.
I figured I'd start somewhere I've been a while: Winterhawk fandom. So I said:
Help me write a story where Bucky Barnes and Clint Barton get together while working at a restaurant and eventually kiss.
You might recognize this premise from the garlic fic.
( Here's what it gave me: )
So on one hand, I was expecting the writing to be terrible, and it isn't. But this reads more like the summary of a story than an actual story, right? Plus, the phrasings are ultimately cliche: the soft glow of the moonlight is easily predictable text because it's been used thousands of times. This isn't bad, but it isn't something I see as being at all popular over other fic offerings.
But, I thought, maybe I'm using it wrong. So I made the sacrifice and put in the first 3 paragraphs of Old Vines. Yes, ChatGPT now has the first 3 paragraphs of Old Vines in its database. I'm sorry / You're welcome.
( and )
It's basically... a summary of the first three paragraphs. Rewritten.
So I put in the 4th paragraph.
( next )
Again. It's just rewriting my words.
So then I asked it:
what happens when Aziraphale lands in wine country
mainly because I was curious whether it would find Old Vines itself somewhere, or like, idk. I was just curious.
( So it gave me this: )
What a lovely story that would have been! Y'all never would have had to deal with Gabriel.
and THEN i thought, well, OV is a relatively small fanfic i'm using because it's mine. I wonder what happens if I ask:
what happens when he meets Crowley
( And )
Note the mention of "the apocalypse" and "angel and demon" -- the addition of Crowley to the mix has led it back to Good Omens source material. None of this is in OV, which is an AU, and way way way way way WAY smaller than Good Omens as a whole, obviously -- but it didn't pick it up from those paragraphs. It knows Crowley and Aziraphale stopped the apocalypse.
And it's also still very much a summary of something. It isn't... it isn't writing what I would call fanfiction.
So what am I saying here? Nothing yet. I know a lot about writing; I know very little about AI.
I find its general coherency surprising and worrisome -- I'm so cynical that all I can see are the ways people could use it to steal and rewrite work, or fuck stuff up, but I'm sure there are cool things about it too. I don't think it's yet a challenger to work on AO3 written by humans.
I don't know what else to say about it but I wrote this whole thing, so like, idk man.

Oshi No Ko Volume 1: An Uncertain Prologue
Tumblr media
So, Aka Akasaka's successor to Love Is War, in concert with Mengo Yokoyari as the artist for the series. There's a lot, a lot, a lot a lot to digest in this first volume, but I'll give potential readers a warning. Yes, your friends might have raved about this series, yes, the down the road picture might be completely different, and yes, it goes into detail with the entertainment industry.
However, this prologue is, something. It's a bit all over the place, it's the kind of backstory that needs to be experienced to be understood, and in a way it's the opposite of Love Is War, where Oshi No Ko is far more serious with comedic moments peppered in. It's... hard, to get behind without knowing where the future goes. It's incredibly radical and paints a totally different picture to what readers might expect (depending on their knowledge of it).
So, unless you're willing for a wild ride and are set on reading Oshi No Ko, I'd say hold off on purchasing physically. Read digitally, give it some time to stew and set in before you pull the trigger because I have a feeling that a lot of to-be-readers might not be looking for what this prologue goes into. So, with that in mind,
⚠️Warning: Spoilers Ahead⚠️
So, either you've read it and you're curious what I think, or you haven't and you're dying to know what's going on with this volume. Well, first off there's reincarnation, then there's murder, then there's a revenge plot, mixed all in between stardom and the entertainment industry.
It doesn't really get a chance to relax, and the stuff exterior to the entertainment industry feels extraneous to the core principle of the story. I understand the angle of the revenge plot, and trying to find the doctor, and by extension Ai's, killer, but it feels weird. Yes, murder sells far better, but given the focus on a candid entertainment industry would suicide/mental health not prove a stronger vehicle for the story?
Doing a little bit of thinking out loud, Ai's story could instead revolve around her struggles as a single mother attempting to make it in an entertainment industry where she never really even had a desire in the first place. Slipping further and further into it and its challenges before she enacts an untimely end. It would even work with Aqua and Ruby moving forward into the entertainment industry, in my opinion, as Aqua would still be the voice of reason while Ruby follows her mother's footsteps, missteps and all.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong in the first real (second actual) volume, but the prologue seems a bit removed from the overall focal point. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's like adding a few incredulous pieces to a story to make it unique, in my opinion. Time will tell how this decision plays out, but in the short term, it's somewhat jarring. I like Ruby and Aqua's characters, I like the insight into the entertainment industry, I like that stuff, but the prologue is just a little too out there for me to convince myself that this will be a great series.
I plan to be along for the ride regardless out of sheer curiosity and interested in the angle that they focus on as idols and actors, but how much it grips me overall truly depends on the direction that the present of the series appeals to readers with. It's certainly not bad, but it's definitely not a first volume that grabs readers and has them saying, "I want more". More than that, it leaves them puzzled, thinking, "What just happened? What's going on? What's the answer?". So in a way, it gets to that same question, but it's like asking somebody about something out of morbid curiosity, there's a piece of you that needs it satisfied no matter how base or unappetizing it ends up.
