A Future Paved in Plastic

For too long the world has been living in a waste it want it lifestyle, constructing ourselves our very own protective layer of plastic around the world ready to smother us all when we turn our back to it one more time. In 70 years our wasteful lifestyle has pumped out over 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic which meagre 9% is recycled globally. From a species that is able to travel to the moon and back, a species that has created building that sit amongst the clouds, a species that can defy the odds at every turn this is unforgiveable neh impossible for this number to stay so low!

Luckily in todays age innovation is ripe all across the world, with sustainability and waste reduction being the driving factors behind this many of these surges forward in innovation. Placing the worlds best and brightest with the worlds backing might not always be what’s needed for a break through, as we have found a new corner stone of construction materials in the backyard of a Kenyan mother’s house.

In this dusty backyard we have found our modern day Moses, paving her way through the sea of plastic that we have created . Nzambi Matee is the founder of a Kenyan start-up called Gjenge Makers Ltd. Matee and her team has started the long journey at eating away at our 8.3 billion tonnes of waste as of 2017. Her Start up aims to reuse the waste plastic made from factories, plastic bags and everywhere else and convert them into lightweight, strong multipurpose bricks that are ready for anything. These bricks have a tensile strength higher than concrete and more importantly instead of being responsible for 8% of the worlds carbon emissions they are repurposing plastic waste that would otherwise go to a dump and further pollute our struggling earth. Hopefully we will see Matee’s plastic bricks paving our streets all over the world allowing us to finally bend our pesky linear waste economy it’s a more rounded circular economy that we can sustain perpetually.

However it’s not all sunshine and roses from here, this is going to be a long journey if Matee and her team are left to carry the world on their plastic bricks. Matee’s company currently only removes 500 kilograms of plastic waste a day, meaning alone with no more plastic waste it would take Matee and her plastic bricks thirty-three million two hundred thousand days!! Or just over 90,000 years to clear the earth of, and I’ll say it again, the 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste that we have accumulated over the years. This is not the first or last of many great innovations to reduce the worlds waste but it is one that combats some of the worlds many issues, the issues of plastic waste, the issues of lack of construction materials, the issues of not having a amazing looking patio that’s also more sustainable and eco-friendly than anyone else’s in the neighbourhood. Matee’s start on fixing the world has not gone unnoticed however as she was projected on the global stage with her nomination and winner as The Young Champion of the Earth 2020 Africa.

And a final point without more people like Nzambi Matee and her team championing the human race we are set for a downward spiral all the way to the bottom until we end up acting out idiocracy in real life. And well I suppose by that time we will have blissful ignorance to the damage we have done
