Yesterday I read “Oh god, the sun goes” by David Connor. Sic-fi/Surrealism/psychology. Published August 1, 2023.
I spotted this in the library book sale and was dazzled by the strong title and odd cover design. The blurb was also intriguing, a man going on a journey to find the missing sun? Sounds like it could be really interesting. Unfortunately it wasn’t.
I only read the first two chapters of this, and decided to DNF because I could tell I wasn’t going to enjoy it, (I learned my lesson on not likening postmodernism when I read Love is Strange). I didn’t like the prose, and the story focuses almost entirely on internal psychology and pretty much ignores the social impact of the missing sun that I was hoping to read about. It factored in so little im half convinced the missing sun was a metaphor rather than an actual physical event.
If you like psychology, surrealism and postmodern man vs reality style conflict you might like it but it isn’t for me.

Last night I saw “Kisses for my President” (1964) Comedy
A woman named Leslie McCloud becomes president and her husband Thaddeus McCloud has to deal with the awkwardness of being the “first male First Lady”, “not having anything to do”, and not being the “man of the house”/center of attention anymore aww. I was presently surprised to see that although you understood Thad’s discomfort with the situation, he wasn’t a whiny dick about it. He was a pretty likable character. He and his wife seem to actually love eachother and have a healthy relationship, thank god.
Overall the movie was likable, decently funny and didn’t piss me off… except for the ending oh my god. That really ruined the whole thing. Couldn’t they just have kissed over one of those circle transitions instead?
I think if they made this sort of movie today with some some modern sensibilities, more jokes/drama/depth and a better ending it would be a hit.

Today I saw “Shark Tale” (2004) Comedy
I saw this with a friend. The idea was to watch two good-bad movies, this was the one she had seen but I never had.
It was uh… well it was bad. And weird and dumb. but i have seen things I disliked more. The animation and character designs were bad, the characters sucked, the story was basic and bad. The world was lazy and superficial, The moral was visible a mile away, It was all very dumb. It was tolerable for most of the runtime, but I slowly lost patience with it the longer it went on.
The best part of this movie was its humor. Most of it was groan worthy, but some of the humor really landed. The stand out moments for me were the “Oscar the millionaire” scene, the “na na na na can’t touch this” scene, and the part where the puffer fish realizes Will Smith fish isn’t a real shark slayer and stares straight at the screen.
Not a complete waste but I never wanna see it again.

Today I watched “Twilight” (2008) Romance/Fantasy
I saw this with a friend, the idea was we would watch two good-bad movies. This was one I had seen but she hadn’t.
This was fun. I liked the the music, the cinematography, the overactive color grading, the sparkle skin and yes, even the love story. These to over emotional broody teenage idiots deserve eachother. One aspect i especially liked was the artistic indie dream sequence thing between Bella getting bitten and wakening up in the hospital.
I read all the twilight books and watched all the movies when I was younger and watching this again made me realize how many aspects of twilight inspired my current work, like the immortal coven and the human/imortal hybrid.
Although I did enjoy twilight, it wasn’t that great. It absolutely has problems, but those problems didn’t stop me from likening it. I wish there was more focus on the Cullens, and that the main characters were older and less stupid. Im probably not gonna see the other movies in the series because my memory tells me they were mostly bad.

Last week I watched “Isle of Dogs” (2018) Adventure/Comedy
I saw this when it first came out and liked it ok but didn’t really get it. I feel more or less the same now. It’s a great movie in terms of art, the animation, music, cinematography and attention to detail were all excellent. It was very dense, which is both a good and a bad thing. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t connect with the themes or characters all that much.

Last week I watched “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (2016) Action/Horror/Romance
I was hoping for something similar to “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter”. An action movie with supernatural creatures in a historical setting. I expected a dumb but enjoyable movie and I did not receive it.
The way the zombies worked had some interesting ideas but failed in execution. It really failed to be tense and I didn’t like the ideas of zombies being redeemable, even if it turned out to be untrue. The romance also sucked and was very underwhelming. I thought most of the characters were pretty dumb for underestimating the danger of the zombies, especially for the supposedly seasoned weapons expert sisters. There were some audio issues and I had difficulty understanding what the characters were saying a lot of the time. The element of characters learning “eastern fighting strategies” was also pretty stupid for a multitude of reasons. I also didn’t like the open and abrupt ending that didn’t resolve anything.
I will admit that I don’t like pride and prejudice all that much, but I feel like this would have worked better if there was more “zombies” and less “pride and prejudice”. It really felt like a restraint rather than a framework to bild on top of.

Last week I watched “Zoolander” (2001) Comedy/Thriller
I’ve seen this movie before but not in many years. It was still good. Funny, weird, stupid, insane. Easy fun. I also understood a lot of the jokes and noticed a lot of details that I didn’t when I was 15. My only gripe with the movie was the romance, it really felt like an obligation and wasn’t earned at all.
But why male models? 7/10

Last week I watched “Sense and Sensibility” (1995) Romance/Drama
Ehhhh. I didn’t really like it. I had difficulty telling the characters apart and didn’t really like any of them, I found the conventions of upper class British society dumb and uninteresting, I didn’t feel compelled by any of the romance plot lines. I think I’ve learned that this sort of setting just isn’t for me.
Didn’t really care 4/10

Last week I watched “Julie & Julia” (2009) Comedy
I actually got this one from the thrift store instead of a library sale. I had never heard of Julia child before I watched this movie but my mom said she’s famous. Ok. The movie was good. I liked it ok. Some of the food looked yummy, some of it looked gross. Probably wouldn’t see again.

This month I saw “The Ultimate Gide to the Presidents” (2013) Documentary
This was a DVD my uncle loaned me because he knew I like presidential history. It’s an 8 episode history channel documentary. I watched about 2 episodes before I gave up on it because it was pretty boring and was almost entirely shit I already knew. This show is probably fine if your introducing the subject matter to someone who doesn’t know it, but for someone seeking rare facts and a deeper understanding (me) it doesn’t offer much.

This week I watched “Lincoln” (2012) Historical Drama
This dvd was loaned to my by my uncle, so i didn’t get to keep it. Sad.
This movie mainly concerns the period at the end of the civil war where Lincoln is attempting to get the 13th amendment passed.
This movie is incredible, it was well made, dramatic, tense, funny. The actor who played Lincoln did a really really good job bringing his character to life. The emotional moments were really well felt, and the tension throughout was palpable. Omg the dread I felt at the end, knowing what was about to happen. My only complaint was i had difficulty keeping track of some of the characters, but there were a lot of names being thrown around and the situation was very complicated.

Last week I saw “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” (2023) Action/Comedy
I watched about half of this on an airplane and half of it off. This show relies on you having read the comic/watched the movie first, or at least knowing the basic summary of the original story, because after episode one, this show goes in a totally different direction from what you expect.
I quite liked this. It was funny, the music was great, the action and animation were good, I liked the characters. There was a lot of video game and anime related references, which I didn’t dislike, but I didn’t really connect with it. Scott’s voice kinda annoyed me, but it does fit with his character and he’s missing for most of the show so whatever.
I liked it 7/10

Last week I saw “Alien Worlds” (2020) sic-fi
I watched this on an airplane and yep, it did what i wanted it to which was distract me for 5 and a half hours.
It was fine. The show discusses evolutionary strategies developed by creatures on earth and applies them to an alien planet. It does well as an educational tool, and it’s something i probably would have liked a lot when I was a kid, but as an adult I already knew about most of the stuff they talked about, and I didn’t find the worlds they explored believable or interesting.

Last week I watched “Mama Mia!” (2008) Musical/Comedy
I’ll admit i didn’t have the best viewing conditions (a plane with lots of turbulence) so that may have affected my enjoyment. I thought this was fine. I loved the music (which was most of the movie) but the story was lackluster. I had difficulty telling the 3 fathers apart and I found the main character kinda annoying.

Last week I watched “Bedazzled” (2000) Comedy/Fantasy
This was fun. A dude makes a deal with the devil and gets 7 wishes in exchange for his soul. I really liked the depiction of the devil and god, the costumes and situations the main character got himself into were really fun (my jaw DROPPED when I saw the result of wish 6 (counting the McDonald’s) massive “oh shit” moment). The ending was a very pleasant surprise, I was really glad they didn’t go with the basic direction and chose something that actually supported the message. I liked the main character’s growth throughout the story as well.
It wasn’t amazing, but It was easy fun and I definitely recommend.

This month I watched “the first wives club” (1996) Comedy/Drama
For me this movie hit at the perfect time. It was an excellent outlet for the extreme frustration I was feeling the day I saw it. The wives revenge on their awfully ex husbands is brutal and extremely satisfying. They get those bastards so good. The three friends had a great connection and I loved seeing them interact. It’s very funny and I recommend it to all the frustrated women out there.

This month I read some of “Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency” by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard. Nonfiction/Drama/Thriller. published September 22, 2015.
I’ll admit I skimmed this, a lot of the information in here was stuff I already knew, and I realized after a chapter that I had already watched the movie based on this book, oops. This book put a lot of focus on Reagan dying from dementia, which was very sad. The prose were very good, and I would definitely recommend this to someone seeking to learn more about Ronald Reagan.
