I know this is your art blog, but I got one question about the Masked for ya!

At one point is a host no longer suitable for a Mask? How important is blood to the process?

I love getting asks about masked!! I have lots of thoughts about their biology

SO

A mask can't really choose its host. it's pure reflex to possess the wearer. and a mask can't move on its own (though I love the headcanons people have that they can skitter around), so a mask is stuck with the body it has until that body wears out. holding up a mask to your face takes longer, because the mask is storing energy to lash out and take root into the face all at once. a masked turning someone else into a mask is a much faster process because the blood melts the face into a soft slurry that's easy for the new mask to burrow into

a masked is very sturdy and alters its host's body to better suit its needs. it doesn't feel pain. the blood is completely fine inside its body but at certain chemical triggers it boils and eats through flesh and bone. it pushes the body to its limits to chase and move. it will keep walking until the cartilage in its joints rots and the bones lock up and the muscles turn to slop in its body.

the very purpose of a masked is to make more masked, so that's why they produce so much Juice, to make the masking process fast and simple. even if a masked is fully rotting away and can't stand, it's still Full Of Blood, and would drag its decaying body to the nearest employee to still attack. a host becomes "unsuitable" as soon as the masked can't ambulate with it, but it'll still stay attached to it, even if very loosely (a masked's roots will start to die near the end of the host's use, for easier detachment)

if a host's use isn't cut short, and is allowed to decay fully, there is a point where it is a functionally useless body festering on the ground with severe internal bleeding, waiting for a scavenger animal to come eat it and dislodge the mask so the cycle can start again.

YEAH it also felt weird to draw out its skin. I should draw a chart of its decomposition sometime because I have thought about it A Lot . this here is fairly early on (thought at least a few days old, as the bruising's quite set in). in due time the skin will split and liquefy and sort of melt into the suit; the suit makes the host last longer because it's so airtight. but don't take it off. or else
