In Regards to DFFOO’s Act III Ch.10

There was one last thing I had no chance to share until it was brought to my attention last night, regarding this part of the dialogue concerning Lightning and Hope.

Lightning: “But it was thanks to that, that I was able to defeat Bhunivelze. No matter where we are or what we’re doing, we’re closely connected… I came here to tell you this, Hope.” Hope: “Light… As you wish, then.”

Lightning’s words more or less convey the meaning of “to tell you this mood/thought/feeling”. Something that is a bit hard to translate in English, to be fair, but that is hardly the point. You may think it is of little relevance—well now, think again.

This line is Squenix being their usual sneaky-bastards-selves in regards to their narrative with Hope and Lightning. Lightning’s line is rendered as this in DFFOO:

Let us play a game—spot the differences.

Guess from what is that line in LRFFXIII? If you have guessed, “Lightning’s final line in LR’s epilogue”, then you are correct.

This is the same line in which, in English, Lightning echoes Hope’s promise to her when he rescued her:

Lightning: “I only know… that soon, we’ll be together.”

And now, DFFOO took Lightning’s final words, adding to them the destinatary—Hope. Just like Reminiscence -Tracer of Memories- hinted at through Aoede’s closing lines on the epilogue.

All of which is to say—nothing else to see here, people. The battle is over and the war is won. Squenix may have done it being true to their narrative, but this is putting their foot down, and there is no longer any room for doubt.

As for me… Let us say it concludes a long, exhausting road—that I chose to walk because I am an analyst first and foremost—in pursuit and defense of the truth of the story. There is no better reward right now for Meowth than so many years of work not only having been worth my efforts, but proven right. I think I can say, I chose well. I may not be a shipper—all I ever aimed for was to grasp and expose the truth of the trilogy’s lore and storyline—but I am honored and glad to have walked this path alongside the shipping community that kindly took me in.

Here is to you all.

You know how canaries were historically brought into coal mines, because if the mine was full of carbon monoxide the canary would die first and the miners would be able to escape before they died too?

I just found the greatest thing.

This is a canary resuscitator.

When the miners notice the canary getting sick with carbon monoxide poisoning, they can close that circular hatch so no more gas gets into the canary cage, and open the valve on that oxygen tank to keep the canary breathing. In other words, they made a spacesuit for birds.

By immediately giving the canary access to clean air, the miners can save it from the poison. The bird lives. To be clear, this is not for economic purposes, this was specifically created because the miners felt bad and wanted to save the bird.

Isn’t that just the perfect demonstration of what humans are like? We started sacrificing small creatures to save ourselves, and then felt bad and spent our valuable resources on saving the critters too. Because yeah the canary was the only way to test for CO, but it’s a living creature too, dammit!

So I have read several people complaining that they can’t be expected to know the “unwritten rules” of fandom. So here’s what I wish people knew:

Fanfiction is fiction.

Fictional people are not real.

Fictional people do not have rights.

Fictional people cannot be abused.

Reading or writing about something does not mean the desire to do or support it in the real world.

If I find art upsetting/triggering/disgusting/outraging/unpleasant/squicky/distressing/offensive, it is on me not to read it, not the creators and hosts to remove it.

Curate your own experience. The back buttons exist for a reason.

If you don’t trust yourself to do that, get someone you trust to do it for you.

Fandom is an adult space. Adults create and own and host fandom spaces. If minors want to participate, then the onus is on them and their parents/guardians/trusted adults to ensure they participate appropriately, not on strange adults to stop being adults.

You often don’t know the assault status or mental health status or neurotype or race or nationality or religion or gender or sexuality or age of a creator or consumer, and they do not have to disclose to you to justify their fantasy.

AO3 is not a safe space. It is not intended to be a safe space. Proceed accordingly.

Just because you don’t like something or find it offensive doesn’t mean it is a “problem” that “has to be dealt with”.

Most characters in anime are not white.

There is no onus on you to reblog or share anything.

Everyone makes mistakes in fandom and is less than their best self sometimes.

Persistent pseudonyms encourage long term relationships.

Ship wars are stupid.

Someone else enjoying things does not impact on your own enjoyment of other things.

Tagging and warning is a courtesy, not a requirement. Assume any fic might contain untagged content.

Rating is an imprecise art, not a science.

Don’t hassle IP creators.

Most people who are in fandom are hoping to make connections based on a shared passion.

Trying to profit from transformative fanworks puts us all at risk.

No one is obligated to share your head canon or fanon.

Being kind rarely fails to pay off.

It is okay to block and remove people who make your experience unpleasant. You don’t have to placate them. (Learn from my mistakes).

Britpicking is a good thing.

You don’t have to justify why you like a canon/pairing/trope/kink. Sometimes navel gazing is fun, but you don’t have an obligation to explain yourself, especially to strangers. I share the overwhelming desire to refute an unfair accusation, but the people accusing you are rarely doing so in good faith, so you’re batting a losing wicket.

I’m not your Mum. (Well, okay, a very few of you can call me Mum or Mom, but if you are one of them you already know who you are ❤️)

If you aren’t mature enough to take responsibility for your online experiences, you aren’t mature enough to be in fandom spaces.

Part 4 starts off with a viewer comment mentioning that Kaji is doing a great job with Hope’s voice. Kaji laughs and says that after three episodes he feels like he’s gotten the hang of it. He serves an absolutely immaculate Hope line to demonstrate (08:30) and Tan-chan says “That’s it!” Kaji says, “Yay, I passed the Tan-chan audition!” (cute)

As Lightning and Hope fight PSICOM soldiers Tan-chan’s all, “Hey, what weapon is that soldier using?” They take a closer look and it’s revealed that the weapon is a police stick. Kaji laughs and says “A police stick… And this side has a gun-sword.” They have a chuckle about this. Then they’re all “Well, but Hope has a boomerang, so I guess it balances out.” LOL

They have a conversation about Hope’s boomerang and how he gets stronger boomerangs throughout the game. “Lightning must give them to him off screen,” Kaji supplies. They comment that a blade like Lightning’s would be too much for him, but then Kaji’s all “But he’s awfully good with that knife…” and proceeds to make “Shwick! Shsssk” noises meant to be Hope flicking the knife open and shut. “He must’ve practiced at home when Nora’s wasn’t looking,” he jokes. *laughter from Tan-chan*

Kaji and Tan-chan are very taken with the monsters in the Sunleth Waterscape. They particularly like the gremlins and the flandragoras. They have a lot of fun inventing voices for the monsters and discussing their cute points. They run across a particularly populous group of flandragoras and Kaji cries, “It’s Flandragora Fest 2021!” LOL

THIS CLIP LMAO! I feel like it speaks for itself, but I’ll put a translation below.

Hope explains that if they take the sewers they won’t be seen. Light agrees. They plan to make for the sewers, but the moment control is returned to the player Hope auto-walks right out into the open in plain view of the soldiers.

Kaji: “Hope! Hope, no! You’re stopping right there?? Like, okay, I get the auto-movement, but that’s not a great place to stop!” *Hope runs off* Kaji (amazed): “And somehow the soldiers completely missed that. Alright.”

Then there’s THIS clip. Also gold.

Hope: “Ah, Light-san! You’re pushing me! Light-san! Light-san! Why are you pushing through me? Is there some kind of no-hands-allowed rule? Kabaddi! Kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi!”  (Kabaddi is an Indian contact sport which involves a lot of tagging and tackling.)

*Lightning runs back over and shoves around Hope again*

Hope: “What’s going on, Light-san? Let’s stop with the kabaddi already.”

LOL

As they travel through the food production plant, Kaji is still awed by how nice and soft and caring Lightning has become. “You can tell she’s a big sister,” he comments. When Lightning and Hope argue over whether or not Hope should give up on his revenge Kaji’s like “Aaahh, I’m on both their sides. Lightning has a point, but I also get where Hope is coming from.” Gosh, it’s so nice to watch a stream from a guy who understands the game and doesn’t invalidate Hope’s anger/trauma.  

The episode ends after Light/Hope leave the production plant and Snow and Fang show up to kick ass and take names. There wasn’t as much to report this time because the bulk of Kaji’s commentary was mostly just him periodically summarizing what was happening in the game and clarifying story details for the viewer. And, of course, remarking over and over again about how nice Lightning’s been acting.

Part 2

The more Kaji plays, the better he gets at delivering Hope’s lines. You can really hear him fall back into the role. The episode starts with Lightning, Vanille, Sazh, and Hope all together again in the Vile Peaks. As Kaji battles monsters, he comments on Sazh’s showy battle movements. He and Tan-chan laugh about how Sazh hams up his fighting and they also remark on his “banana” colored guns. Sazh is an endless source of entertainment.

LMAO KAJI PLS Lightning: “Stick to your path without wavering.” Hope: “As long as you don’t waver, you can fight?” Lightning: “That’s how I’ve lived all this time.” Kaji (as Hope, very solemnly): “Light-san….” *pause* Kaji (again, solemnly): “Why do you only wear half a cape?” -DECEASED-

The quartet splits into duos again. Kaji and Tan-chan have a good laugh at Lightning when she praises Hope for holding his own in battle and then promptly makes the stankiest stank face right after.  

Her expression is obviously directed at something else, but Kaji finds this hilarious and makes a bunch of jokes about it. “Light-san, why are you making that face? Didn’t you just say I did a good job? You look scary.” He even goes on to provide some bonus narration from Hope as the scene changes. “Back then, I was so surprised. Light-san… made a very unexpected face.” *Tan-chan laughs*

Kaji and Tan-chan have more fun with all the unlucky hoplites (cryptos?) that get sent flying by Hope and his Juggernaut. They love the hoplites.

Kaji (running past all the PSICOM soldiers so he doesn’t have to fight and getting chased for only a few feet when they notice him): “These soldiers sure give up quickly for stumbling upon the very wanted fugitives they’re out here patrolling for.” LMAO TRUE

- During the Odin fight - Lightning stands around charging spells while Hope desperately fights off Odin Kaji (as Hope): “Why is it that I’m the one doing all the work in Light-san’s trial?”

- After the Odin fight -

Lightning: “I’m sorry for what I said before.” Hope smiles happily and runs after her. Tan-chan: “Hope’s happy.” Kaji: “He sure is.” Kaji (as Hope): “She was nice to me! Light-san showed affection for me!”

Lightning says it’s time to rest, much to Hope’s relief.

Kaji: “Suddenly, Lightning’s acting all nice.” Tan-chan: “Very nice.” (It’s hard to tell what Kaji says after this because the ending is muffled but it seems like he’s potentially saying one of three things): Either, “I’m in love”, “She’s come to like him now”, or “He’ll fall for her.”) *Tan-chan bursts out laughing*

- As Hope is sleeping -

Hope: “Mom…” Lightning (scoffs and smiles) “Just who are you calling mom?”

Kaji: “Hmm. Her expression is really different now. Compared to before, her air has totally changed. Kaji (softly): “Thank you, Light-san.”

Back to Sazh and Vanille

LOL Sazh and Vanille fight a bomb enemy which of course blows up right in Sazh’s face. Kaji’s all “Oh no Sazh! Are you okay?” They laugh and then comment that bombs exploding can’t be good for the chocobo living in his hair. (sweet)

More fun with hoplites as Sazh runs by one without fighting it.

Hoplite: “We meet again. Let’s hang out. Oh, are you leaving?” (sad hoplite aww)

This whole section is basically just voice fun with hoplites. Kaji enjoys personifying them as innocent yet flirty maidens, particularly when they stagger and their cores are exposed. “No! Don’t look there! I’m so embarrassed! Anywhere but there! Except you, Vanille. You can look.” (DEAD)

Back to Hope and Lightning

- After Hope volunteers to take point -

Hope and Lightning just had their “keep your eyes front”/”it’s not a matter of can or can’t” conversation. Lightning smiles fondly after Hope.

Kaji (to Tan-chan): “That was a very gentle smile we saw from Lightning. This conversation is a turning point, but I’d say it’s also an important point of transformation within the game that leaves an impression on the player. *sound of agreement from Tan-chan* (AWWWW)

Lightning (background dialogue): “I’ll follow, so go ahead and do whatever you feel is best.”

Kaji (amazed): “That’s some pretty incredible faith she’s putting in him.” *Tan-chan laughs* Kaji: “Good for you, Hope.”

Kaji (after a short pause): “Taking to heart Lightning’s words about it not being a question of can or can’t… Hope has sure grown a lot compared with the beginning of the game.” *more sounds of agreement from Tan-chan*

HOPE FINALLY HAS A POST-BATTLE LINE! Kaji is pleased.

- After giving the knife -

Kaji talks for a bit about how Lightning’s demeanor has really changed since just a bit ago. Suddenly she’s acting all kind and calm and patient. Tan-chan remarks on how she handed over the knife that’s so important to her.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN HOPE’S BOOMERANG CONUNDRUM HAS BEEN SOLVED

Apparently, according to some official character summary/thing Kaji read, Hope uses a transfer device of some sort to poof his boomerang away when he’s not using it. Rejoice! We can at last write accurate fanfiction.

- Shortly after Hope tells Lightning about how he wants revenge on Snow for his mom -

Kaji points out that Lightning and Hope have been together for a long while now. He and Tan-chan make a joke about what if they never switch back to the other characters and the whole rest of the game is just Lightning and Hope adventuring together. Kaji, as Hope, narrates: “I never did meet Snow.” (rofl)

- After the cutscene about Lightning’s birthday/receiving the knife from Serah -

Kaji (as Hope): Ah! You gave me such an important item and I banged it on the ground! I’m sorry, Light-san!”

Kaji: “Man, everything since the beginning has been sad… and the flashbacks are sad… everything’s sad. Bring back Sazh!” Kaji: “I guess Sazh also has sad drama later on. There aren’t really any FF characters without sad drama, are there? Everyone’s sad!” (TRUE)

END EPISODE

Cripes! That was a beast of an episode! So much good stuff. I wish I could share more of the small moments because they’re so great, but you really need the context to properly enjoy them.

In his mock-Hope voice, he says: “Light-san please listen to me! Don’t run away!” Then, in a softer voice, he threatens, “I won’t heal you.” Tan-chan laughs and says “Ohh you sound just like him.” In response, Kaji, in an absolutely flawless Hope voice, says, “Are you watching, viewers? This is 2021 Hope Estheim.”

I’ve got a cocktail and a bowl of kraft mac n cheese time to get started 🍸 🧀 Doing the whole episode this time. 💪

Excellent beginning to the stream with Kaji commenting that Lightning’s armpits are oddly sexy (like in a purposeful design sort of way) 😂

OOH this is interesting. Kaji mentions that when he auditioned for the role of Hope the character name he was given was “Wish”. Similarly, Snow was being called “Blizzard”. These were the codenames used for audition purposes. The more you know! 🌈 ⭐

AHHH very happy to report that Kaji is still supplying mock-Hope lines. When they come to the uncrossable bridge in Lake Bresha and Hope says, “Hey, I think we can use this” about the wrecked ship/gun/thing, Kaji, in a perfect imitation of him, goes “I think we can use this, Light-san!” ✨presh ✨

CONCERNED HOPE VOICE: “Light-san, are you okay with your holster knocking against your legs like that? Your thighs will turn red.” 🤣 🤣 🤣

MORE MOCK-HOPE (as Hope stands in front of the ship/gun/thing they need to inspect to cross the bridge): “Here. Over here. Check this please, Light-san.” My guy has a whole-ass running commentary going right now as Hope.

More chuckling from Kaji and Tan-chan at Sazh as he gets left behind by Lightning because he’s old and slow and not a badass soldier. “You can do it!” Tan-chan calls down to him as he hops up to the top of the big cliff.

The conundrum of where Hope keeps his boomerang continues. Does he shove it into his pants? Kaji and Tan-chan have a good laugh about this. “That would be dirty” they agree.

Enter: Fang

Kaji, the moment Fang walks up to Snow: “Kakkoii.” He remarks that there are a lot of cool women in this game. He continues to “kakkoii” about Fang as she goes about being her badass self.

VILE PEAKS AT LAST!!!

LMAOOOO THIS WHOLE PART:

Kaji and Tan-chan laugh at the fact that when Lightning runs Hope lags behind, and because of this his voice sounds far away when he speaks. “It seems like Lightning doesn’t even hear him,” Kaji remarks. In his mock-Hope voice, he says: “Light-san please listen to me! Don’t run away!” Then, in a softer voice, he threatens, “I won’t heal you.” Tan-chan laughs and says “Ohh you sound just like him.” In response, Kaji, in an absolutely flawless Hope voice, says, “Are you watching, viewers? This is 2021 Hope Estheim.”

He continues to serve immaculate Hope lines during the following battle. “Fire! …Oh, wait, it’s fira.” *HP runs low* “Ah! Player-san! Heal me! Support!” *casts cure on self* “Cure! Ahhh that was close.”

He also enjoys giving a sympathetic robot voice to the hoplite enemies. Hoplite: “Ouch. That’s my heart. Motherrrr.” *Hoplite dies* “Farewell.”

Kaji in his hoplite voice again as Sazh and Vanille fight: “How cruel. We should be friends.” The rest of the episode is mostly just him and Tan-chan having a good old time doing hoplite voices and remarking on the cutscenes.
