Having a CG who struggles with depression and how we cope :)

My caregiver has major depressive disorder, and it can make taking care of me extremely hard for her. When I regress, she can’t always be there because it can be hard for her to check her phone or get out of bed when she’s having an episode. At first, I felt really neglected and she felt chronically guilty.

Here’s how we get through it:

1. I learned how to be a more independent little. There are some activities I can do even without my Mama, like watching television or coloring. I do these when she’s not able to be around. Sometimes, as littles, we expect our caregivers to bend over backwards to be there for us when we’re regressing. It’s not realistic, especially in this kind of situation.

2. She started leaving me letters. Much like “open when” letters in long distance relationships, my Mama writes me letters when she feels she has energy, and leaves them for me when she can’t be there. In the letters, she’ll tell me where certain snacks are or tell me fun activities I can do.

3. We have honest communication about our emotional needs and abilities. A close friend of ours introduced us to Spoon Theory, which is a way to express how much emotional energy we have left to help one another. It has been revolutionary for us! I’d encourage you to look it up sometime or use another system.

Sometimes you have to get creative in order to handle interpersonal relationships, especially ones as complex as an age regressor and a caregiver, each with mental health issues. I hope this helps somebody in a similar situation.
