(My husband and I still quote that commercial all the time and just recently were wondering how many people out there still remember it. He and I are 6 years apart in age and grew up on opposite coasts, yet somehow that commercial made such an impression on each of us that 25 years later, when entire human adults no longer have a concept of the product it was advertising, we still quote it weekly.)

Hey hello, my sister is reading American Gods and she came across this sentence on page 15 of her edition "He called his wife collect." but she isn't sure what it means. Could you tell us what it means because I am not so sure either?

Long ago, if you were at a payphone, you could make a collect call (in the US or Canada) or a reverse charge call (in most of the rest of the English speaking world), in which the bill for the call would go to the person receiving the call, and not the person making the call.

In this case, it means that the calls from prison were paid for by the people who were being called.

In this day and age, despite the fact that AT&T and Verizon no longer make collect calls, if you are in prison, you will still probably be calling collect. Here's the Michigan Guide for Telephone Calls with Prisoners.

Hi, guys!

I usually don't do things like this, but desperate times force us to take desperate measures. Let me preface by saying that I'm from Venezuela, and if you have seen world news at any time in the last 2 decades, especially in the last 5 years, you should know that the socio-economic and political situation here is absolute hell. My government calls itself democratic when in reality it's nothing more than an authoritarian regime. 

In the last 2 decades, the National economy has deteriorated to the point of driving 95% of the population into extreme poverty (The other 5% are corrupt government officials that have been robbing people's money for decades). The hyperinflation here gets (if I'm not mistaken -and I shit you not) to 1500%. Yes, that's fifteen hundred percent. People more knowledgeable than me about the subject have determined that the income for an average family should be the equivalent of 500-700 US dollars to cover all their basic needs in a month. Do you know how much is equivalent to the monthly minimum wage in dollars? Today, November 18, 2021, at 5 pm the minimum wage is 2.21 US dollars. Yes, Two dollars twenty-one cents. Now, you might understand why in the past years there has been a migration of Venezuelan people to other countries in South America, North America, and Europe. Over 5 million people have left the country, seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

Why do I tell you this sob story? Because despite my family being lucky over the years and able to put 3 meals at the table a day, our situation has changed. My stepdad, who is the primary provider for our family, got sick. Two weeks ago, he had surgery to remove a tumor from his abdomen. The medical expenses are never-ending and we're looking for an extra source of income.

So, my mom is an amazing crocheter (an unbiased opinion, I assure you), and she made some things to sell. Some are in stock and others can be commissioned.

#this is honestly so true #and I really wish it were more common with men #not to say that there aren't men who have this kind of friendship #but that it's much more rare and less encouraged #and honestly in most cases there's still not a lot of deep talking #because deep emotional connection and talking requires TALKING ABOUT FEELINGS #and even the most emotionally-in-touch men I know have been impacted by their socialization #but just imagine how much better the world would be #if men were actually encouraged to talk about their feelings with other men #to have these kinds of friendships #holy shit
