Thinking about young Azula.
When I was a young I used to try to capture and engage my parents attention when they were disappointed with my brother. Conversely he often learned to become invisible. Now that Iām grown I know this is a really common dynamic adopted by children of disfunction.
I see this in media a lot as one sibling trying to show the other up, but I think Azula probably didnāt like watching her dad be frustrated at Zuko. Iām not saying she was compassionate exactly, kids rarely are, just that it was better all around when Ozai was happy & she knew how to make that happen, keep his focus off of Zuko. Sheās a definitely show-off, but thereās a chance it developed as a coping strategy.
If Dadās going to be drunk, heād better be happy drunk, and I can ensure he stays that way if I command the group focus.

a lil guide to the Fire Nation for the ATLA fic writers out there
(aka. a no means exhaustive primer on east asia by an asian person)
This is a guide for fic writers want to write a canon-era story set in the Fire Nation, or featuring Fire Nation characters. A quick little primer on the tiny details of everyday life that you might not think about, but certainly stuff that would make me, an asian person, wince if I were to encounter it. BRUSHES, not quills. CHOPSTICKS, not forks.Ā
(note #1: this was partly inspired by a chat with @elilimā)Ā
(note: #2:Ā I originally intended it for zukka fic writers before realizing that other writers might find it useful. so apologies for a slight Zuko-bias for that reason)
(note #3: this is all stuff i was thinking about when writing firebenderās guide, in case anyone was wondering)
1. CLOTHING
Okay, I think the most straightforward way to describe what everyoneās wearing most of the time is ātunicā. Theyāre all justā¦tunics of different colours and varieties. Later when Zukoās the Fire Lord he wears robes. The show provides a better visual guide than I could, here are a few notes to keep in mind:
a) Japanese people wear their collars LEFT crossed over RIGHT
I donāt think this would come up in writing as much as it would in art, but itās considered bad luck to do it the wrong way because thatās only for dead people. Let my boy Zuko demonstrate:
b) There are no buttons
This is picky, but Wikipedia saysĀ āFunctional buttons with buttonholes for fastening or closing clothes appeared first in Germany in the 13th century.[6] They soon became widespread with the rise of snug-fitting garments in 13th- and 14th-century Europe.ā I kinda believe it.Ā If you look closely, charactersā clothes are always tied together or wrapped in some way with a belt. If there are fasteners, theyāre braided frog closures that go into a little loop, like the qipao-style dresses women wear in Ba Sing Se, or Zukoās casual princeās clothes in the topmost image. Anyways, I donāt think Zuko or Azula or the Gaang would technicallyĀ buttonĀ or unbutton anything when theyāre changing clothes. Clothing is designed to be tied, not buttoned.

Okay, but an ATLA AU where Iroh still scolds Zuko for not thinking things through when he goes to get Appa from Lake Laogai, but it's because he has been rescuing way too many animals since he got banished (a childhood habit largely encouraged by a-Ursa and b-he was a prince in a large ass palace he coul do what he wanted) and sure, they had space on the ship for the random animal but now they are in Ba Sing Se and they live in a too small apartment for that and you have to ask yourself the real questions, Prince Zuko. WhErE are you planning to keep the Bison?!

Chapter 4 of Sink The Ship is out!
Book 1 Chapter 2: On The Rescuing of Toddlers And The Keeping of Hostages
Mai is reunited with her childhood friends. Her childhood friends who are deep down into treason lane. And, sure, treason is all fun and good, but have you ever rescued a two year old from a 12-year-old bridge between spirit and human world, his two water tribe friends and a gigantic air bison?
(alternative summary: Sokka is not much onboard with many things and no one will listen to him, so you can imagine the sort of stress he's under)

Listen, the water tribe family holds a realy special place in my heart.
and i wanted to see happy Kaya and Hakoda!
It is simply unfair that Kaya is justĀ āthe mother killed by the fire nationā
Ursa got more lines than her!!!
I want to know more of her. See how she took care of her kids. bundeling them in warm clothes. Telling them stories, playing games.
I hope these are okay.

So, how does it work?, I ask.
You guide my hand to it,
Then close my fingers into a fist.
You make a wish and then you pull.
It still didn't make sense. Why, though?
I don't know, you smile, for good luck?
Good luck for breaking things,
What a concept, don't you think?
We say ābreak a legāĀ to ballet dancers,
We pick a bone and say āmake a wishā,
We pull on it until it breaks
And wonder how our hearts ended up like this.
Hold one end of the bone and pull,
It's fun, you say and tug, It's for luck.
Then keep on going until it breaks.
It's like blowing out a birthday candle.
But when it does break, as bones do,
Only one of us gets the wish,
Only one of us get to be lucky,
Only one of us get to walk unscathed from this.
