From the perspective of a photographer who has been in the game for a long time, what's your take on Instagram? Are the people who call themselves photographers credible? Do you think it's a good platform for photography? Just wanted to know your general opinion.
I am going to try to keep answer this as concisely as possible.
I have only been making photos for 15 years so I feel I myself still have a lot to experience and to go through but here is my take on instagram…
It without a doubt is an amazing platform. From showing people what their eye could be in photography to giving spark to some of the established legends in the game to find a new way to share their amazing work. It also is simply just a fun social way for people to share their life experiences.
Instagram has breathed new life into the life style of a photographer as well as the art form of photography.  Those who were once unsung heroes of making photos are now rockstars. The glamour of being a photographer… free stuff, traveling the world, making art, meeting interesting people and getting paid for it. Everyone now wants in.
But with the influx of millions of people picking up their smart phones, dslrs, film cameras. etc. and now on a mission to become the next big photographer you are bound to unleash some amazing talent as well as a lot of lackluster ones for the time being.
Mixing the social aspect to the art form can do both good (breifly mentioned above) and bad things. The bad being that people who want to pursue photography are more focused on things that might be great for marketing but don’t actually push them to become their own type of photographer. Instead of being focused on developing their own eye or technique they seem to be more interested in a cool alias name to go by, follower and like counts, which filter/pre-set is going to make their photos better or going to make their photos look just as good as whoever they are emulating.
As for the credibility of people who give themselves the title of photographer that is not something I can answer without given specific work to review. Some might be with their talent and others might be better off just calling themselves an “instagrammer” instead.
In the end I do think it is good for the art form of photography. I just think it is going to take some people out there awhile to see through all the bullshit and to learn that it is o.k. to be an individual and to make photos that are true and unique to you. Not what popped up on your explorer page.
