Stupid S1 Oswald, my beloved

Ep1 Oswald is such a different beast to what he becomes. S1 Oswald in general often oversteps and gets his shit kicked in for it, but Ep1 Oswald doesn’t have a clue. His plan to betray Fish was incredibly poorly thought out, and he had no back ups, no way out, and couldn’t even lie effectively. His ploy with Falcone was a gamble to save his neck, and his request for Jim was even more of a gamble, because he has no real way of knowing if Jim is a good man, especially when Jim’s life is on the line and killing him is the only way he’ll be safe from the mob.

And the thing with Ep1 Oswald is that I think his naivety with lying to Fish comes from viewing her as a mother figure similar to his own, and that is his fatal mistake. Gertrude is kind and incredibly gullible, naïve to the world and easily led astray by whatever lies Oswald tells her. She never truly questions Oswald. So when he betrays Fish, he thinks he can get away with flimsy excuses and half-truths, thinks she won’t suspect him, when the second a snitch is brought up, she cottons on to exactly who it was who betrayed her and offers him no mercy and no chances to defend himself and he's so unprepared for it.

And I love that for all Oswald thinks he’s this clever, insightful mastermind, his pride and inexperience massively works against him time and again. He gets some things right, but easily missteps and gets himself into hot water when he gets cocky. It’s why S1-2 his relationship with Jim is so interesting, because he wants a true friend and partner in Jim, but the way he reads Jim and treats him is wrong, and it pushes Jim away rather than draw him in. He wants Jim as the cop confidante like Fish and Harvey, but doesn’t get that Jim isn’t like that, he isn’t so easily tempted to the dark, and the missteps lead to Jim turning on him over and over.

Basically, I love how stupid S1 Oswald is because he’s still a baby villain learning the ropes and its only sheer luck that he pulls through given how often he fucks up. He earns the title of King at the end, but by god does he not realise he’s not nearly as savvy as he thinks he is.

this, a long with another non-femslash fic, is a fic i intentionally put off reading until i completed my fic dog pit. so that i wouldn't be unduly influenced. finally getting around to it was really exciting. fabulous meg character study about bodies.

as you can see from this reclist most of this is the result of meg related tagdiving. because i have kind of a meg Thing. i really should make a general megfic reclist because a lot of it is good but also a lot of it is het. anyway. happy femslash.
