Series Masterlist ⭐︎ Previous Chapter
The rain paddles against your windows softly, the sun is hidden behind the heavy dark clouds, and the light wind rustles the trees outside. You didn’t close the blinds last night, but it doesn’t matter anyways, it’s dark and gloomy outside.
The soft covers touch your bare skin, the smell of cologne is heavy in the air, along with the smell of sex that still lingers after the previous night.
The weight of his arm keeps you in place, keeps you close, he is making your heart flutter in this early morning hour already.
He is facing you, just as you are facing him. His palm rests on your lower back, his legs tangled with yours underneath the sheets. He pulls you closer when you try to move, tightening his hold on you, but he is still so fast asleep. His lashes look so much longer when his eyes are closed, his features are completely relaxed, he is breathing softly, his heart beats against your palm as you keep your hand close to it.
You eye the moles on his skin and the scars on his body.
Your hands always itch to touch him, to graze his skin with the tips of your fingers, and you can do so when he’s fast asleep and unaware of your loving touches.
You raise your hand up to his face, pushing away the curl that hangs loosely over his forehead. Your touch is light as a feather as you trace the bridge of his nose, and his cheek, before you return your hand back to his chest, freezing when a sigh falls from his lips and he stirs in his sleep, pulling you tighter against him in the process before he sinks deeper into the pillows, eyes still shut and heart still beating softly.
You breathe out and relax when he continues sleeping deeply.
You don’t want to get caught admiring him, and touching him like this, when only a few days ago, you feared that you would lose him after Eddie confronted you both.
You cried yourself to sleep that night.
His words cut deep, and the fear of losing him added to the hurt. You weren’t ready to lose this, you weren’t ready to lose him, and you thought that you were so very close to it until he showed up the next morning, and asked if things would stay the same between you and him now that someone found out.
The weight that stayed on your shoulders nearly crushed you, but he took it off you, and without realizing that he did, he took some of your worries too, just not the pain, and the mark he left on your heart with a few simple words. But it didn’t matter, because kissing him and feeling his touch again, was all that mattered, to know that it wasn’t over just yet… that mattered.
You can hide the sadness and the pain when he holds you like this, you can even forget about it… momentarily.
You forgot about it last night, when he kissed your neck and he marked your skin, when he unraveled you with his tongue and the touch of his hands, when he split you open and kissed you like you were his, when he looked into your eyes and he held your wrist as the tips of his fingers touched your palm, like he wanted to entwine them with yours and feel you closer and closer as you were chest to chest and his lips moved with yours like none have ever did before.
Shivers run down your spine, and butterflies dance in your stomach when the sound of his voice calling out your name echoes in your mind.
You might not be the one for him. And you know that there might be others, but you don’t even want to let your mind go there, just the mere thought of it, fills you with nausea. He keeps coming back to you, that’s what matters the most to you. You know that you can give him so much more than anyone else ever could. If only he let you. If only there was a chance.
You nearly jump from the bed when the ringing of the doorbell pulls you out of your thoughts, and it echoes through the quiet house.
Your eyes widen, and your heart starts pounding as panic settles deep in your chest. You stare at Steve, who is peacefully asleep, still.
You flinch at the second ringing.
“Fuck,” you whisper when you remember the burgundy car in your driveway. There is no reason for Steve to be at your place so early in the morning. There is no believable explanation either, what will you say to whoever it is on the other side of the door?
If this is one of your friends, you are screwed, so screwed.
You know, as a matter of fact, that it isn’t Eddie – he wouldn’t show up this early unless it was an emergency, and even then, he’d be in your room by now.
“Steve,” you whisper, trying to shake him awake, but he only grumbles in his sleep and hides his face further into the pillows.
You sigh.
You push his arm off and escape his embrace. You throw the covers off, and jump up from your bed, standing in only your underwear for a moment as you search for your clothes, you reach for his shirt instead and throw it on, before you rush out of the room, trying to fix your messy hair as you run down the stairs.
You don’t have much time to come up with lies and excuses as to why Steve’s car is in your driveway, whoever it is on the other side of the door, is getting a little impatient.
“I’m coming,” you grumble and unlock the front door before you rip it open, holding your breath.
“Finally!”
You sigh out in relief, rolling your eyes at your own panic. You step aside and open the door a little wider.
“What took you so long?” Your sister murmurs as she steps inside and brushes past you. She is carrying a bag in one hand and the bright pink baby carrier your baby niece is currently sleeping in.
All your annoyance leaves your body right this second, your eyes soften and a smile appears on your face.
“Hello to you too, Twinkie.”
She rolls her eyes at your nickname but pulls you in for a side hug after dropping the bag on the ground.
“Give me her,” you smile as you take the carrier from her arm, and carry it into the living room, smiling as you eye the little features of the baby girl. You put the carrier down on the couch. “Hi Francine,” you whisper, gently tapping her tiny nose. “She’s so big already!”
Your sister laughs as she follows you into the living room after kicking off her shoes, “you’ve seen her last week, I don’t think she grew much.”
“She kind of did,” you whisper, taking Francine’s tiny hand. “They grow so fast.”
Your sister walks over to the window, peeking outside, she clears her throat, “do I wanna know whose car that is?”
You glance over your shoulder and swallow nervously.
You’re glad that her memory is awful.
Everyone knows who is driving the burgundy BMW, and your sister still lived in Hawkins when he got it. She should know who it belongs to.
Her lips curl into a smirk, and she wiggles her brows, “casual hook up, or… is it something serious?”
You know that she has been waiting for this day.
It is something serious, to you.
It is something serious when he holds you closely and kisses you softly, when his eyes soften and his lips curl into a smile at the sight of you.
It is something serious when your heart flutters every time his knuckles brush against yours.
It is something serious when you fall asleep in his arms and wake up in the very same spot.
It is something serious when you keep falling and falling with no end in sight.
Will you ever stop falling in love with him?
Will there ever be a moment where your feelings and your love will stop at one level, or will you continue falling harder every passing moment?
Your sister raises her eyebrows, lips curling into an even bigger smile, when she notices the flustered look on your face, the dreamy look in your eyes.
“Something serious, huh?”
You blink.
Staring at her, with your cheeks now feeling warm… way too warm, you shake your head quickly.
“N-No.”
You curse inwardly, for giving yourself away so easily with your stuttering and your blushing. That’s not how you ever reacted before when she mentioned any of your hookups.
She grins at you, wiggling her eyebrows, “mhm sure, Daisy.”
You roll your eyes at her teasing glances, but the nickname makes you smile.
Out of all the flowers, your mom loved Daisies the most, she would put the dainty flowers in your braids, and behind your ear whenever you were out in the garden. You would pick them for her and make little bouquets to surprise her with.
She always called you her little Daisy.
Your sister picked up on that nickname, though she used it to mock you at first when she went through a weird phase of hating flowers – which is really ironic considering the flower shop she ended up working at when she moved to the city.
She could’ve given you another nickname, something silly – something like the name you gave to her, but she spared you, luckily.
“Shut up, Twinkie,” you mumble, as you look back at your niece, who is beginning to stir in her sleep, her long lashes fluttering as small noises escape her mouth. “As happy as I am to see this little bean, why are you here at uh,” you pause, turning your head to look at the clock on the wall, “ten in the morning?” You ask.
She makes her way over to you, a sweet smile appearing on her face, as she gives you her best puppy eyes.
“I was hoping that you could look after Francine?” She asks, still smiling. “Lisa is getting married soon, and she asked me to go wedding dress shopping with her, I can’t take her, we’ll probably be out all day, and I can’t wait for Ethan to get home, his shift won’t end before–”
“It’s fine, I’ll look after her,” you interrupt her, despite the slight nervousness that rises up in you.
You have no experience with babies at all, you have given her the bottle, you even changed her diaper, but your sister was around, and you didn’t spend the whole day alone with her.
She sighs in relief, she puts her hand on your shoulder, “oh thank you!”
“Don’t mention it, I’d never say no to hanging out with my favorite girl.”
“You need to spend more time with her anyways, you coming once a week isn’t enough!”
You frown at your sister, “you’re the one who moved away!”
She waves her hand at you, walking around the couch, she walks over to the carrier, “she always does that little scrunch with her nose before she wakes up.”
You smile, watching as she leans in to place a gentle kiss to her daughter’s cheek.
“Okay,” she whispers, pulling back to look at you, “I put everything into the bag, diapers, bottles, formula, a change of clothes in case her diapers leak, and uh… pacifiers. And uh, you know if she cries just lie down with her and put her on your chest, she loves cuddles.”
You nod, “yeah, I know, I haven’t forgotten. I got this.”
“Yeah you do, Daisy. And if you need help, just call Eddie–”
“Are you kidding?” You laugh, shaking your head as amusement flashes in your eyes.
Eddie and Max were there, the last time your sister showed up with her husband and little Francine.
While the redhead was rather excited to hold the little girl, Eddie felt too afraid to even touch her, and he nearly gagged when Max chased him with a dirty diaper.
“He looked at her like he was scared of her!”
Your sister laughs, “yeah, right. Okay, so not Eddie then, I’m sure Max would love to help though, or maybe someone else – but I’ll get going now, I promise, I’ll make it up to you, you got this, Daisy.” She smiles, ruffling your hair, she leans down to look at her daughter one more time, “bye bug, I’ll see you soon,” she whispers and squeezes her tiny foot before she steps away. “Okay, I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah, see you later, Twinkie.”
The moment the front door is slammed shut, you let out a long sigh, and throw your head back against the pillows on your couch. You bring your hand up to your face and pinch the bridge of your nose.
You are still tired, and it seems as though Steve is still sleeping soundly.
You want nothing more than to return back to bed and sink into your pillows again.
You definitely won’t get any sleep now, but you still get up and slowly lift the baby carrier, hoping that the movement won’t wake her up. You try to be careful as you make your way out of the living room and up the stairs.
When you walk into your room, you find Steve now laying on his stomach, his face buried in your pillow. The sheets are low on his body, his whole back is exposed.
The tiny cooing sounds from inside the carrier, cause your lips to curl into a big smile. You place it down on your carpet, and kneel down, giggling when you’re met by her big eyes. She starts wiggling around when she sees you.
“Hi little angel,” you whisper, and lean closer to unfasten the safety belts, before you lift her up from the carrier, placing your right hand behind her head, you pull her into your chest, her hand instantly reaches for your hair, clasping her tiny fingers around it, she makes you laugh when she starts pulling it, making happy noises while she does so.
You sit down on your bed, and lift your legs up, scooting back until you’re resting against the pillows behind you. You pull the covers over your lower body.
A small squeal leaves her mouth.
“Shh, someone’s sleeping,” you whisper, tapping her little nose, glancing at Steve who is starting to stir in his sleep.
You place her on your lap, and giggle at the cuteness as she stretches her little legs out. “That’s a cute onesie,” you whisper, rubbing her belly, “I bet you picked that yourself didn’t you? Pink is a pretty color on you, princess.”
She babbles and wiggles around as she stares at you with her big eyes.
Your voice, and the small coos pull Steve out of his deep sleep, his mind is still in a haze, his eyes still closed.
“Da da da.”
Your giggle follows the tiny voice.
Steve scrunches his brows together, gripping the pillow underneath him, he slowly opens his eyes and looks at your side of the bed, his lips part and his eyes widen completely, something in his chest stirs strongly as he stares at the sight in front of him.
He is still sleeping.
He is still dreaming.
A smile is resting on your face, eyes lightened up as you entertain the little baby girl on your lap, a pink bow around her head, big eyes resembling your own as she stares at you with a smile on her face, her hair color is the same as yours.
Steve swallows the lump that grew in his throat, warmth settles in his chest, surrounding his heart and filling it with something, with adoration.
His eyes soften when you lean down to kiss her forehead, squishing her tiny cheeks.
“You’re the prettiest girl, Francis,” you whisper, using her nickname.
His lips curl into a smile, despite the confusion that still lingers in his features.
This is surely one of his dreams, he is convinced of it, why else would he wake up beside you, and a baby who looks like you?
But when you turn to face him, and the little girl follows your movement, looking at him with wide eyes, he isn’t so sure anymore.
He blinks, watching as you reach for Francis’s little arm, waving her tiny hand at him, “say hi Steve.”
The little girl babbles even louder, making a grabby hand at him.
Steve smiles at her, raising his hand up, he waves at her.
You can’t help but laugh at the lost and confused look on his face, his brows are pulled together, his lips parted as he looks between you and your niece.
He turns around on his back, and pushes himself so he’s leaning against your headboard, adjusting the cover, he pulls it up higher. He looks around the room, before his eyes return to the two of you, he runs his fingers through his messy hair, eyes flickering back and forth.
Your lips tug into a smirk, you can tell that he doesn’t understand a thing right now.
You look at him, as you pull your niece closer, holding her up, you press her against your chest, “can you believe that we made a baby overnight?”
You almost burst into laughter when his brown eyes widened with pure shock, and he choked a little.
He blinks, shaking his head, “I know I just woke up, and I’m still sleepy… but… I still kind of remember biology.”
Francine makes another grabby hand at him, “ma ma.”
“I dunno, but I’m pretty sure she just called you mama.”
Steve’s cheeks heat up, and he turns away from you, looking around your room again before his eyes catch the picture on your nightstand, the one of you and your sister. Oh.
“Ah… Your niece,” Steve murmurs as he looks back at the two of you.
“Good morning, Harrington,” you giggle. Francine copies your giggle, and Steve can’t help but smile. “Oh you like that name, huh? It’s funny isn’t it? Harrington.” Her little eyes crinkle, and she starts babbling with a laugh. Steve keeps her eyes on her, smiling at the little girl.
“That’s Francine,” you smile, introducing your niece to him.
Steve lifts his hand up, waving his fingers at her, “hi Francine, I’m Steve.”
She squirms in your arms, making happy noises as she blinks at him. Steve chuckles, he scoots closer to you, and he lifts his hand, and touches her tiny one. Francine wraps her hand around his finger, gripping it tightly, making his smile even bigger.
“Is your sister here?” He asks, without looking away from the little girl.
You shake your head, “no, she asked me to babysit today. So uh… I’ll be busy with my girl here today.”
The urge to stay here with you, and this cute little mini you, feels so strong.
“Want me to help?” Steve asks.
You’re a little stunned by his question, and can only stare in surprise.
“Huh?”
“I mean, I don’t mind staying to help,” Steve shrugs, glancing at you for a second before he gives his attention back to Francine, who stares at him in awe.
The thought of spending a whole day with Steve, taking care of a baby with him, sounds like heaven.
The only reason why he’s ever even around you without the group is because of sex, and that only. You don’t meet up just to watch movies, cook together or anything else, you only meet up for one thing, that’s all.
The fact that he is willing to just spend time with you, without expecting anything to happen baffles you a little.
“I-I… Do you really want to stay?”
He nods.
“Not much of a choice, to be honest,” he murmurs with a fond smile on his face as he gestures to your niece who is still holding his finger tightly.
“O-Okay,” you whisper, shakily as nervousness and excitement rise up in you.
“She’s so adorable,” Steve whispers, chuckling when Francine babbles at him, “she looks like you.”
You smile before you realize what he just said, and heat rushes to your cheeks.
She’s so adorable, she looks like you.
“I-I uh,” you stutter, trying to keep your cool, “so you’re gonna stay then?”
“Yeah, I’d love to hang out with Blondie and mini Blondie over here,” he chuckles as he taps her nose.
Your heart could burst right then and there, your cheeks feeling incredibly hot the longer you sit here and stare at him.
“Cool,” you say with a small voice as you suddenly feel the need to escape for a moment, “would you mind looking after her for a moment then? I wanna take a quick shower or else I’ll walk around looking like a bum all day.”
Steve turns to look at you, he takes in the sight of your messy hair, and the shirt on your body, only now noticing that it’s his. His insides tingle, and his lips curl into a smile.
You look like a cute bum. He almost blurts out, but bites his tongue.
“Sure, go ahead, me and Francine are just gonna hang out, right?”
She squeals in response, making jumpy movements.
You both laugh at her.
You lay her down beside him, and tickle her belly, giggling when she starts kicking her feet, “alright, I’ll be right back, angel.”
Steve doesn’t even notice how big his smile is, how soft his eyes are as he stares at you, how warm the feeling in his chest is.
“She might roll over on her belly, and if she gets a little fuzzy just pick her up, she loves snuggles. I’m gonna be quick.”
Steve scoots closer to Francine, leaning his elbow on the pillow, he rests his head against his palm, and glances at you, “it’s fine, take your time, I’m just gonna chat with her.”
Francine is still kicking her feet and waving around with her little arms.
“Oh yeah, she’s very talkative,” you giggle, and get up from the bed, you walk over to your dresser and pick out some clothes to change into. As much as you would love to wear his shirt all day, he needs it himself – although, you wouldn’t mind him walking around shirtless.
Once you get everything you need, you turn back to take a look at them, and you nearly melt into a puddle when you see the way she is still clutching his finger, kicking her legs and babbling something to him, while he watches her with a smile on his face.
“O-Okay, I’ll be right back.”
You leave the room in a haste, but Steve doesn’t even notice, too busy staring at little Francine. He adores the resemblance of you, and the color of her eyes that matches yours, she truly looks like you.
Steve can’t remember the last time he saw or even held a baby, he’s not sure if he ever even held one. He was ten when one of his cousins was born, but he didn’t care to hold him back then.
Francine keeps making a grabby hand at him, while she tugs at his finger, starting to get fuzzy after a few minutes pass without your presence in the room.
He sits up straighter and pulls the blanket up higher, he reaches for one of your throw pillows and places it on his lap.
“Alright Francine,” Steve whispers, he takes a deep breath and furrows his brows in concentration as he carefully lifts her up, supporting her head with his palm, he pulls her closer and lays her down on the soft pillow.
She coos and starts blowing bubbles, making Steve laugh.
“Oh, you’re so adorable,” he smiles, pulling her a little closer, “did you pick that bow today?” He asks, eying the headband around her little head.
She makes a few grunting noises, though looking at him with a happy look on her face.
“Your auntie loves those bows too, she puts some in her ponytails sometimes,” Steve says, talking to her as though he will get more than just a few babbles from her. “I bet you’re gonna steal them from her someday–”
Prrrrrrrrrrrrrrt
Steve’s face pales at the sound, his eyes widen.
The noise that came from her diapers sounded more than just air.
“Oh fuck,” he mumbles before his eyes widen further at the curse word that just left his lips, “I shouldn’t have said that, shit– I mean, I’m sorry, please forget what I just said,” he rambles, as though she understood a single thing that he said.
Francine babbles, kicking her feet into his stomach with a happy squeal.
“Um,” he panics, looking around the room, “Blondie!?”
“What Steve!?” You call from the bathroom, “it’s been five minutes!”
“I uh–” He mumbles, scratching the back of his neck as he furrows his brows, “code red…?”
You nearly laugh at his choice of words, you only ever used code red in the upside down, for the real emergencies.
You can already guess what happened, and it only makes your amusement grow bigger. You quickly put your clothes on, and brush your hair before you make your way out of the bathroom and back to them.
“Okay, I’m here,” you announce, placing his shirt that you stole earlier on your bed, you walk over to his side, and take a seat beside him, “that was the quickest shower of my life.”
He gets a whiff of your vanilla body wash, of the mint from your toothpaste, and the smell of perfume that lingers in your hair, making his chest flutter.
“She uh– I think she needs a diaper change.”
“Oh,” you laugh, “that’s what you’re panicking about?”
Steve glares at you.
“You wanted to help,” you shrug as you get up again, making your way out of the room again to get the bag with Francine’s stuff. “You gotta learn how to change diapers, Harrington!”
Steve huffs nervously, “no big deal right?” He whispers to Francine.
“Da da da.”
“Yeah,” Steve laughs, “right.”
You come back into the room, and put the bag on the ground, picking out new diapers, wet wipes, baby powder and the spare onesie, along with the thin baby towel that you spread out on your mattress.
“Alright, Lego head,” you raise your eyebrows at him, “do you wanna practice for your future nuggets or are you scared of baby poop?”
He snorts, shaking his head at you.
“No, I’m not scared of baby poop.”
You walk over to them both and lean down before him, you pick Francine up, and scrunch your face up, “yeah, you really need a diaper change, angel.”
Steve watches as you carry her over to the other side, placing her down on the towel you spread out. You undo the buttons of her onesie, smiling at the little girl.
“Well, come on,” you giggle at him, “it’s an experience you gotta make, Steve.”
Steve takes a deep breath, he throws the pillow off his lap and removes the cover. He gets up from the bed, standing there in his boxers for a moment, until his eyes find the sweatpants he discarded last night, he quickly throws them on, along with the shirt you wore earlier.
“Alright,” he murmurs, running his fingers through his hair, he walks up beside you, “just tell me what to do.”
You chuckle at his nervousness, you place your hand on his shoulder, “don’t worry, if Max was able to do it, you can do it too.”
A breathy laugh falls from his lips.
You guide him, giving him a little step by step of what to do.
You watch the way his brows knit together, and the way he is nodding to himself as he follows your words.
He doesn’t even look disgusted when the smell hits him, he only chuckles at the way Francine continues babbling happily.
“She’s a happy baby, isn’t she?”
You nod, smiling down at your niece, “yes she is.”
You hand him the new diapers and the baby powder, before you put the used wipes into the dirty diaper, roll it up carefully and throw it into the trash in your bathroom before you return to your room.
“How old is she?”
“She’s gonna be three months old tomorrow,” you say, smiling as you step up beside him again.
Steve raises his eyebrows at Francine, “oh, you’re gonna be a big girl tomorrow?” He jokes as he tickles her belly, making her laugh.
The smile on your face widens, the feeling in your chest growing stronger and brighter.
Her small giggles, and the fond smile that rests in his tired features spark something deep inside of you, a warming and comforting feeling appears as you watch him take care of her with careful and slow movements.
“Is that okay?” He asks you, gesturing to the diapers he put on her, “or is it too tight?”
You lean closer to him and check the pressure, “no, that’s perfect, Steve.”
“It is?” He asks, surprised.
You nod, and start to put her onesie back on, “yeah, I don’t even know what you panicked about, you’ve done a better job than me, I didn’t know what I was doing the first time,” you laugh. “You did good, Lego head.”
A dimpled grin appears on his face, despite the redness in his cheeks.
“I-I think caring for a bunch of kids that turned into teens turned me into a natural, even babies. I mean, Dustin counts as a baby, doesn’t he?” He jokes, watching the way your eyes crinkle and your lips spread before you burst into giggles.
Francine watches you with big eyes before she copies your giggles like before.
Steve’s eyes light up, as he watches you both.
The warmth in his chest spreads, as happiness rises up in him.
After adjusting her clothes and the bow on her head, you pick her up into your arms, leaning down to kiss her cheek.
You don’t even notice just how soft the look in his eyes, how the ghost of a smile now lingers on his lips, as he stares at the both of you in awe, watching the way Francine buries her face in the crook of your neck, and you keep a gentle hand on the back of her head.
“Do you want some breakfast? I can make you something after I give this princess her bottle, I think she’s getting tired again.”
Steve’s heart thumps strongly in his chest, he can’t deny the emotions of adoration in him as he looks at you with the baby on your arm.
“I can make you a breakfast sandwich or anything else you want.”
Steve blinks.
“Uh, you don’t have to make anything for me, Blondie. I can make you something though.”
You shake your head, “no, you’re my guest, I’ll make you breakfast, and you can feed her if you want.”
“Okay,” he says with a sigh, nodding his head, “I’ll make you lunch or dinner though.”
“Oh, are you gonna woo me with your cooking skills now?” You giggle.
He looks down with a smile, “I promised I would, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, you did.”
Francine clasps her fingers around your hair again, pulling it stronger than before, making you wince a little.
“Okay, okay, someone’s getting a little grumpy now. I’m gonna go make her the bottle.”
“I’ll be right there with you, I’m just gonna go brush my teeth real quick,” Steve gestures to your bathroom, “do you need me to carry the bag down?”
“No, it’s fine, it’s not heavy,” you say as you step towards him, “but can you help me put it on my shoulder?”
“Yeah, of course.”
He grabs the bag and steps towards you, putting the strap around your shoulder. His eyes soften yet again, when he sees you looking down at your niece, smiling as she blinks at you with her big eyes.
Steve doesn’t even notice that his hand still lingers on your shoulder, or that he’s rubbing your back, he is too in awe of the two of you, and that feeling stays with him, even when you leave the room and go downstairs, even when he goes into the bathroom to brush his teeth and wash his face, he stares at his reflection in the mirror, and he can’t even unsee the happiness and the relaxation in his features, but he decides to pay no mind to it.
When he joins you downstairs, he finds you in the kitchen, finishing up on Francine’s bottle, you’re shaking it, while whispering something to her as you’re still holding her in your arm, still.
Steve doesn’t know what it is, but the sight before him, makes him freeze in his spot.
As you stand there in your kitchen, with a smile on your lips, and a look of adoration in your eyes, you’re cooing at your niece, giggling every time she babbles something at you, he realizes something.
You are comfortable, right now.
You’re in your home, away from the eyes of strangers, hidden from the world that you have only shown one side of yourself to, your walls are down, you are just yourself, and there is no shame behind your eyes, because all your attention goes to someone you adore and love, and don’t feel the need to hide from.
Your eyes shine brightly, your features are relaxed in a way they have never been before, and your smile is so genuine, so real.
You’re talking to her with a small and gentle voice, you hold her tightly against your chest – and you… god you look so beautiful like this.
You look so beautiful with a baby in your arms.
Warmth spreads across his whole body, he likes the sight in front of him, he likes it so much that it should scare him, but it doesn’t.
“There he is, Francis,” you smile, glancing at Steve, you don’t even notice how frozen in place he is, how heaven struck he looks, “are you ready to give her the bottle?”
Steve blinks, snapping out of his mind, he nods at you with a blush on his cheeks.
You brush past him, and gesture for him to follow you into the living room, after you grab the cloth from the counter.
You place the bottle on the coffee table, and wait for him to take a seat on the couch.
“Alright, you gotta tell me what to do,” Steve says nervously, as he sits down, “I’ve never done this before.”
“Don’t be nervous, you got this,” you assure him.
You step between his legs, and lean down to place Francine into his arms.
Without needing to be told, he cradles the back of her head, as he gently pulls her into his arms, a smile spreading on his lips when her big eyes look into his.
“Okay,” you whisper and put the cloth under her chin, adjusting it over her clothes in case a little accident might happen.
“Am I holding her correctly?” Steve asks, looking up at you.
The side of her face is nuzzled into his chest, the back of her head resting in the crook of his arm. You didn’t even need to guide him, he truly is a natural.
“Yeah,” you smile, “you’re doing great.”
You hand him the bottle, and sit down beside him.
“Did you test the temperature?” Steve asks, and you almost want to laugh at his question.
“Yeah Steve, I did.”
He nods at you.
With a chuckle, you pull your feet up onto the sofa and sit on your knees, turning your body towards them.
“Okay, now gently place the teat into her mouth and slowly tilt the bottle, she will do the rest.”
He furrows his brows, poking his tongue through his lips, he focuses on your niece as he follows your words.
You watch him closely, how soft and concentrated his eyes are, how careful his movements are, how small she looks in his arms, how sweet the sight of them is.
Francine raises her little arm, and places her tiny hand on the bottle as she starts sucking on the teat, small noises falling from her.
“Oh my god,” Steve whispers, the biggest smile you have ever seen, now glowing in his features as he looks at her in awe, “she’s the cutest little bean.”
“Yeah, she is,” you smile and tilt your head as you watch them, the fluttering feeling in your chest sparking.
Her eyelashes flutter, her big eyes still staring into his.
“I’m gonna cry, Blondie,” Steve murmurs, adoring the little human in his arms. “She's so tiny and adorable.”
You move closer and reach for the corner of the cloth, wiping away the bit of milk that rolls down her chin.
“You’re gonna have one of those someday too.”
Steve smiles at your words, nodding as he whispers “hopefully.”
But he doesn’t notice the way your own smile falls, the way your eyes sadden for a moment, the way you look down and blink away the feelings you don’t want him to see. And he doesn’t realize how quiet you get, he is too distracted by Francine and the thoughts in his head, the pictures of a future he longs for so badly.
Only when the bottle is empty and he removes it, does he turn back to you, but still too blinded by his mind to see the look in your eyes. You take the bottle from his hand, and place it back on the coffee table.
“You gotta hold her against your chest now,” you tell him and remove the cloth from her body, you place it on his chest instead, “and gently pat her back so she can burp.”
You guide him again, helping him hold her correctly as he places her against his chest, he puts his hand on her back, and starts patting gently.
“Is that good?”
“Yeah,” you whisper and scoot closer to him, you reach for her tiny hand, caressing it as you watch her with a smile on your face, “she’s tired.”
“Yeah, pooping must’ve been really exhausting,” Steve jokes, making you giggle.
“Yeah, totally–”
A loud burp falls from her mouth.
“Oh that was a big one,” Steve chuckles as he stops patting her, “you did good, bug.”
“She didn’t even spit, she usually does a little, wow you really do have magical hands,” you chuckle, and remove the cloth from his shoulder.
“Told you, I’m a natural,” he smiles proudly.
You roll your eyes playfully.
“Do you want me to take her now?” You ask.
He shakes his head at you, “can I hold her for a while?”
Confusion flashes in your eyes. You know how badly he needs his coffee in the mornings, it’s one of the first things he does after he wakes up, going into the kitchen to brew his beloved morning coffee. He didn’t even take a single sip yet, but he doesn’t seem to mind, he is too in awe of the baby on his chest.
Realization replaces the look in your eyes – he is entering a baby fever trance, with your niece nonetheless. It makes your smile reappear, that’s how you feel too, every time you get to spend time with her.
“Of course,” you whisper, as your gaze softens.
Francine’s eyelashes flutter, her blinking getting slower and lesser.
“She’s gonna pass out though, you should sit back a little so she can lay on you.”
He nods at your words, placing one hand on her back and the other under her bum, he lays back slowly, his lips twitching into a small smile when he sees her already falling asleep. She scrunches up her nose as she nuzzles her face into his chest, making you both laugh when she suddenly throws her hand up, managing to catch onto a strand of his hair.
She wiggles around for a moment, before her eyes start falling shut.
“And she’s out,” Steve whispers, chuckling to himself. “I wish I could fall asleep this fast.”
“Yeah, me too.”
Her cheek is squished against him, she’s breathing softly now, her hand falling from his hair and onto his shoulder, her little headband beginning to slip off.
You reach out to take it off her head slowly, and lean in to place a soft kiss on her forehead, unaware of the fond smile on Steve’s lips, or the feelings that rush through him because of you.
“I’m gonna go make some coffee and breakfast now,” you mumble as you pull away, and get up from the couch, grabbing the bottle and the cloth.
Steve’s eyes follow you as you walk over to the TV stand, and grab the remote, handing it to him, “you can watch something if you want, it won’t disturb her, she’s a heavy sleeper.”
“I’m good, I’ll watch her for now,” he whispers.
“Okay, I’ll be right back,” you say, and give him a smile before you leave the room.
A genuine smile.
You smiled at him before, countless of times actually, but he could never tell what was real and what wasn’t, what was genuine and what was forced or just sarcastic. But this, this was a real smile, and there was no second meaning behind it. You just smiled at him, naturally. It makes him feel… happy, and as he looks down at the little girl that has your features, he realizes something.
The feeling in his chest was never for nothing, it was never false or misleading.
It was just as real as the smile you blessed him with.
Suddenly, everything before him doesn't seem as dull and colorless as it did all these past months and even years, something sparks before his eyes and he can see again, he can feel something besides the never ending gnawing in his chest and the restlessness in his bones, the fears that nestled deep into his soul. He finally sees something other than the darkened clouds and the red lights that keep flashing before his eyes.
A light that keeps peeking through every once in a while is on the verge of breaking through, making the walls around him rattle as the foundation starts to crumble, one brick at a time starts falling into an abyss.
A future lays before his eyes, calling out to him and waiting to be grasped, an echo, a whisper, a glimpse of what could be if things were only different.
For the rest of the day, Steve feels as though he had fallen into a pleasant dream, a world where it’s only you and him, a little girl that made him realize just how badly he wants to have a family of his own – he already knew that he wanted it, but he pictured the wrong person by his side, a person he no longer even wanted.
He was blinded by old feelings, and the wish to have something real again, when it never even was to begin with.
The feelings that are sparking in him now, feel so different from anything that he had ever felt before, and he only opens his eyes to them more and more as the day passes, and he sees a side of you that he had never seen before.
He sees with how much love and gentleness you treat your niece, he sees the way your eyes hold nothing but adoration for the girl that you would do anything for.
He hears how soft your voice can get.
He feels how soft your touch can be when you once again hand her to him.
And his heart beats so strongly, so fastly in his chest when a giggle falls from your lips after Francine pouts when you take her away from him again, only to be forced to place her back into his arms when she almost starts crying.
Steve adores her, and he adores you – a little more as every second of this day passes.
The thing that pushes him nearer towards the finish line of realization, is this very moment in front of him.
Your niece fell asleep on his chest yet again, you are sitting right next to him, with your head on his shoulder and your eyes glued on her, your finger tracing her little features. The urge to pull you closer and hold you feels so strong to the point that his fingers start itching.
“I’m sorry I didn’t cook dinner for you,” he whispers.
You look at him through your lashes, the corner of your lip twitching as your eyes flicker to his lips for a brief moment.
The only light in the room now coming from the TV, the volume set on the lowest. The rain is still falling, even as the night nears.
“It’s okay, Francis didn’t let you,” you giggle softly, not knowing that the sound makes his heart flutter. “Besides, the pizza was really good.”
“Yeah, it was,” he whispers.
He notices how tired you look, how the sleepiness is beginning to set into your features now too.
“Look at her tiny nose,” you whisper as you look back at her, “and those little hands.”
Something in the way you hold her hand and whisper so adoringly about her, makes him long for you even more – but not in a way he had felt before, no, this is different, this is so very serious.
Steve lifts his arm as a blush creeps up to his cheeks, he wraps his arm around you, and pulls you closer, “come here,” he whispers into your hair, “there’s space for two Blondies on my chest.”
He doesn’t know what kind of emotions he can trigger in you, with such simple words.
He doesn’t know that you have been dying to feel this.
You lay your head on his chest, and he can’t help but smile at the sigh that falls from your lips. You put your arm around Francine, and snuggle against him, and you stay like that, for a while at least, until Steve allows his feelings to take the lead.
He adjusts the blanket over Francine before he pulls you even closer, and he buries his fingers in your hair, allowing himself to play with it like he only ever does when you’re fast asleep and unaware of his soft touches or the glances that fall upon your skin.
He would feel joy if he knew about the emotions that linger inside of you.
“You will be an amazing dad to your little nuggets someday, Steve,” you say in a whisper, it’s almost too quiet for him to hear, “and a good husband too.”
The shakiness in your voice and the sadness goes by unnoticed by him, he is too stunned by your words.
If he could see inside your head, he would know how much sadness there is, how the dark clouds always reside, how you don’t see a future for yourself because you know that he won’t be in it, and without him, what will you have? What will you be? A wilting rose, left behind to die. You are barely holding on now, but you are still here, because he is still keeping you alive. Your life is in his hands.
Steve takes a deep breath, he opens his mouth to whisper to you, only to see you fast asleep now too, your cheek squished against his chest just like Francine’s is.
He breathes out, lips curling into a smile as he stops playing with your hair.
“You will be amazing too, Blondie,” he whispers.
A girlfriend. A wife. A mother.
Whatever you choose to be, whoever you will bless with your love, they are going to be so lucky to have you.
And before he can even realize where his thoughts are taking him, a frown nestles into his features. The thought that he will become a memory to you, makes him feel uneasy. The thought that someone will step into your life, and take away what you both have, fills him with gray-ish sadness once again. The image of someone putting a ring on your finger and getting to be the one to lift the veil and kiss you on the altar openly, in front of everybody, and without needing to hide, spreads the darkness in him, yet again.
He looks down at you, at the way you look so comfortable in his embrace, while your soft hand stays on the girl’s back, he admires you, and he feels no shame to do so, not even when he lifts his hand to brush your hair out of your face.
But his time with you is cut short when the front door unlocks and opens, and footsteps echo in the hallway, a moment later.
He turns his face away from you, when your sister steps into the living room, freezing in her steps when she sees him.
Steve swallows the lump in his throat, giving her a tight lipped smile, he raises his hand to wave at her, “hi…”
She furrows her brows as she takes in the sight of you three, her lips pulling into a confused smile. She takes her denim jacket off and walks further into the room, her lips curling into a big smile when she takes a look at her girl.
But then her eyes fall back on him, and suddenly, her lips part in surprise.
“Hi…Oh– you, hang on,” she mumbles, tilting her head before her eyes widen, “Steve Harrington?”
Steve doesn’t know what to think of the look on her face, or the stunned tone in her voice.
He met her before, at the hospital when she came to visit you, but he didn’t talk to her, and her reaction makes him wonder if you have mentioned him before.
“Yeah… that’s uh… that’s me.”
The silence that follows is almost too loud, he can see the way she looks between you both, back and forth, as her brows stay furrowed.
She points a finger between you both, “so uh… you’re her boyfriend?”
Steve hesitates, and he glances down at you, bitterness lays on his tongue when he utters the next words, “uh… no… no, I’m not.” Sadly, he thinks.
And when he registers the words that popped into his head out of nowhere, he suddenly wants nothing more than to escape this situation, fearing his own feelings again.
“I-I should go now.”
“Oh, you’re not staying another night?” She asks, a somewhat smug tone in her voice as she looks at you.
He would love to, but it’s better to go now. It’s not safe to stay, not for his heart.
“No, I have to work tomorrow.”
“Ah,” she nods and walks over to the three of you, “I’ll take her now,” she whispers, and carefully picks her daughter up. The little girl stirs in her sleep, grunting quietly but not opening her eyes just yet.
“She’s a heavy sleeper,” Steve chuckles as he watches the way Francine relaxes into her mother’s arms.
“She really is,” your sister laughs, and walks over to the armchair, taking a seat before she looks back up at Steve, “kind of like Daisy when she’s relaxed,” she nudges her chin towards you.
A smile appears on his face, and he looks down at you, his arm is still wrapped around you, and he already dreads the feeling of having to let you go.
“Yeah,” he whispers, taking a long look at you, before he decides to get up.
A sigh leaves his lips, and he slowly slips away from you, replacing his chest with a pillow for your head, his eyes soften when you scrunch your nose up just the way your niece did earlier. He adjusts the blanket over you, fighting the urge to leave a kiss on your forehead before he steps away.
Your sister eyes him closely, watching how he treats you with so much care.
When Steve steps away, and looks away from you, glancing at your sister, heat rushes to his cheeks when he sees the way she looks between you both, a smug look lingering in her eyes, a small but teasing smile on her face.
He wants to run.
“Okay uh,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his neck before he points his finger at the hallway, “I’m gonna go.”
“Okay,” she nods, “thanks for helping with Francine.”
He waves his hand, a smile now reappearing on his face as he looks at the baby girl, already missing the feeling of holding her.
“No need to thank me, I loved spending time with these two,” he chuckles, pointing between you and your niece. “But uh, I’m gonna head out.”
“Alright,” she smiles at him.
He takes one last look at you before he turns around and makes his way out of the living room, he puts his Nike’s on, and grabs the car keys he threw on the counter, last night.
“Bye, Twinkie.”
“Bye…” She mumbles with furrowed brows, confused at the name he just called her by.
The front door shuts quietly, yet loud enough to wake you up. With a flinch, you open your eyes, and look around the room, feeling a little disoriented. You look to your side, the empty spot beside you, making you frown.
“Your boyfriend left,” your sister's voice sounds through the room.
You turn to her, finding her in the armchair she always loved so much. A smug look is resting on her lips.
“Shut up,” you mumble, glaring at her.
She laughs at you, and leans back, getting comfortable in her seat.
“Spill. Now.”
-
The hot water rolls down Steve’s skin, the smell of shampoo surrounds him as he washes his hair.
His eyes are closed, but a smile rests on his lips, as images of all the things that happened today replay in his mind.
The fluttering in his chest hasn’t stopped at all, everything you did, everything you said, every single touch of yours has seemingly turned him into a hopeless teenager again – only, he isn’t one anymore, and the feelings inside of him, go much deeper than the ones of a seventeen year old boy.
And no matter how much he tries to deny them, he just can’t, because it becomes less and less possible to pretend that they aren’t there.
Today, they shined through so brightly, when he saw how soft and gentle you could be, when he saw the sides of you that you never wanted to show. He saw something he never thought was even there. And it causes awful feelings to rise up in him, when he comes to the realization that all these years, you were only protecting yourself from the hurt in this world, and you did so by putting up a front and giving people the wrong pictures of yourself.
You were mean and rough to those you didn’t trust, and he was one of them, maybe he still is, but he saw you today.
When you greeted him this morning, with your niece in your arms.
When you kissed her little forehead, and held her in your sweet embrace.
When you taught him to bottle feed her.
When you admired her with him, and traced her little features with your finger and a loving smile on your face.
When you told him how great of a husband he would be someday, and an amazing dad to his nuggets.
Wait… you said nuggets, plural. He never told you he wanted kids, so how did you know? How did you even know he would love to call his children that particular word? Was it intuition? Was it a coincidence?
His eyebrows knit together with complete and utter confusion as the water just keeps running over his head, and the realization hits him like a ton of bricks.
The RV. His conversation with Nancy. Him telling Nancy he wants to be someone’s husband and have six nuggets. Him pouring his desires out, thinking that everyone else in the vehicle was sound asleep.
But you weren’t.
Fuck, you weren’t asleep. You heard him. You heard him talking to Nancy, and you– you think that he wants those things with her still. He should clarify it, shouldn’t he? He wants to tell you that it was the dread of the world ending talking for him. He wants to explain himself to you–
Explain himself? Why? You probably wouldn’t care who he has kids with, or who he marries. You would simply give him a thumbs up and a confused look on your face. But– He feels his stomach contracting with nerves, nerves he knows all too well. He doesn’t need to explain anything to you. He doesn’t need to clarify anything.
But, he doesn’t want you to think he wants that family with Nancy Wheeler.
He really doesn’t.
And he is terrified that he doesn’t want you to misunderstand.
Absolutely fucking terrified.
And then, the realization, the surprise and the nerves turn into absolute guilt. He had also said a few things about you. Nancy told him that it’s sad you had to be included this way into the party, into their problems, but that you looked strong and determined after going into the upside down just one time.
And he replied with how much he desired you wouldn’t have gotten involved at all. It sounded harsh, it sounded vile and venomous… And it was intended that way, or at least that’s what he thought.
Now, he realizes that he didn’t want you involved so you wouldn’t go through danger, but you did, you went through so much pain and suffering. Nancy was right, you were strong, and you didn’t second guess your actions when it meant saving someone.
“Shit–” He jumped a bit when he felt the water turn cold, not realizing for how long he had been in his head, thinking, running through his thoughts and memories. He turned the water off and shook his head to get the excess of it out of his hair.
He got out of the shower and grabbed a towel, a white one that had the smudge of a lipstick stain that never got off. Your lipstick.
And just that mere stain made his heart jump and miss one beat, two beats, maybe three. Fuck… Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.
He really wants you to know he doesn’t mean what he said in the RV.
To both of those things.
Especially the one about Nancy.
“Fuck me.”

We hide our hearts from harder times
There were so many boxes. It seemed to be a never ending pile from the back of the moving truck, one neither of you could really afford but needed. Even with Dustin and Robin helping carry each new box in, it seemed every time you returned to the truck there was just as many if not more. You couldn’t help the soft sigh that escaped your lips as you looked at the very daunting pile that you knew would take you more than likely a month to finally put all in place.
“Don’t tell me we’re giving up already” that familiar sultry voice whispered in your ear, arms snaking around your waist from behind.
“Not giving up, just trying to gain the courage” you tell him, a small smirk tugging at the corners of your lips. You knew as much as Steve would try to help he would also play with everything he unpacked before actually putting it away, making the process much longer than it needed to be.
“It’s not that bad” Steve said with a soft shake of his head, small tufts of hair falling loose from the action.
“Yes it is, you packed every trophy you have ever earned in your entire life” you tell him, pointing to the large box labeled ‘Steve’s Achievements’.
“Hey I earned those, I can’t just throw them out” Steve pouts as you break out of his arms, doing your best attempt at climbing up into the truck to grab another box.
“I know handsome, I just have to tease” you say leaning down and he’s happy to bring his pouty lips to yours and leave a quick kiss. As much as you teased, you had felt bad. When Steve announced to his parents you were officially getting a place together they decided to put the house up for sale since they were never there anyways. As much as Steve didn’t have a great childhood it was still the only home he had ever known. You knew it took a toll on him and forced him to pack every single one of his belongings instead of the necessities.
“Hey dingus, why are we the only ones carrying shit?” Robin called out as she stepped out the doors of the small apartment, spotting you juggling a new box while Steve lingered at the back of the truck.
“I need my rest Robin, if Rosy’s shit wasn’t so heavy” he called back and you shot him a quick glare which made him laugh softly.
“You’re an idiot” Robin mumbled as you handed her the box in your arms and picked up a new one.
“What the hell Steve! Why are the girls the only one’s carrying your shit?” Dustin called out, exiting the home as well and you and Robin quickly erupt in giggles as Steve groans out.
“I don’t have a box in my arms for two seconds and I get harassed. What the hell is this?” Steve says mostly to himself, jumping up into the truck much easier than you did and you watch as he goes for one of the small boxes.
“Uh-uh mister. You’re bringing that one in” you say, nodding your head to the trophy box and Steve rolls his eyes before doing what he was told.
“God you’re so whipped” Robin snorts before starting back for the apartment ready to unload the boxes as fast as she can.
“I’m not whipped!” he called out quickly in defense but Dustin just laughed and grabbed a box for himself.
“It’s okay Stevie, you’re allowed to be whipped. I definitely am for you” you tell him sweetly and he grins, the oddly large trophy box now in his arms.
“I love you” he hums out, leaning and pressing a chaste kiss to your lips before hopping out of the truck. Your heart flutters due to the sentiment, never getting tired of the words he finally spoke a year and a half ago. Well actually wrote but ever since then he told you every chance he got and you loved it every time.
It had been over three years since you met Steve Harrington and you were pretty sure you’d never get tired of him. He came to you when you needed him most and you did the same for him. Since that day you hadn’t spent a day apart and making this decision, deciding to live together, after years of working and saving money, you had no regrets at all. This was it, he was your soulmate and this was only the beginning of a lifetime of years ahead. Small apartment or not, he was yours and that alone was a breath of relief.
“Need an invitation?” Robin called to you from the small house and you just chuckled before grabbing your things and making your way to the house. A house that would probably hold you and Steve for another few years, be your shelter from the storm, and despite its empty walls and bare floors, you couldn’t wait to make it a home.
It’s dusk by the time all the boxes are unloaded into your home and Robin and Dustin are long gone. Just looking at the mess you know you’re too tired to face it until tomorrow, so you make do with what you have. You make quick work of making a bed of the mattress on the floor, saving the frame building for tomorrow. When it looks decent enough to sleep on you make your way out of your room to find Steve. Much to your surprise he’s in the living room, boxes now cleared off the coffee table, and take out from the local diner on the table.
“I made dinner” he grins at you, sitting on the ground as he pours you a glass of wine in a mug. You giggle at the thought of it being the only thing he could find and join him on the floor.
“What’s this for?” you curiously ask, taking the mug from his hand and smiling at the food and candle he had set up.
“This is to taking our time. The last few years have felt like a race to the finish line and we finally made it” he says, recalling all the long hours and savings account expenses. Had it not been for the alternator going in Steve’s BMW you would’ve been here much sooner but at least you were here.
“Cheers to that” you say, clinking the mug against his own before taking a sip. Steve just smiles and looks to the simple plate of food. He loved that you both could live your lives so nonchalant, spend your nights living a luxurious lifestyle even if it’s just a small apartment.
“The money comes, the money goes, but we finally made it baby” he tells you and you quickly kiss him before grabbing the wrapped burger that your stomach grumbles for. Not realizing how hungry you were after a whole day of moving.
His words wash a sense of comfort over you. Knowing now you could spend your days a bit more relaxed, eat dinner in silk robes and light lamps for atmosphere. Even if the apartment was a passing phase in the start of the rest of your life you were both going long. Hanging hopes on chandeliers while gaining weight and sleeping in late. You had loved those days before living together but it was time to change your ways and love these new days. The days meant for just the two of you before something more comes along, something bigger.
“Did your parents say when they’re selling the house?” you ask around a bite of your burger, trying to get a better read on him and how he feels.
“By the end of the month, Dad says if I need anything to get it by then” he mutters, heart clenching over the fact. He hated that empty house, despised it, but these last few years it wasn’t really empty.
“I’m sorry honey” you tell him, wiping your face with a napkin and he shrugs.
“It’s okay, I was meant to move out sometime. Just wish it was still somewhat mine, you know? They were never there so much it sorta always felt like it did. Then when I started spending time with the kids and you there, I guess I just always imagined I’d stay there, raise my kids, teach em how to swim in the pool and how to ride their bike in the driveway. Make it more of a home then it ever was to me” Steve explains, eyes cast over the table and lost in a memory that hadn’t happened yet. Your heart instantly softens to the boy, hand reaching out to settle in his own just like you did when you first met.
“I’m sorry Stevie, but just think about how we can make those memories in our own home. A home we’ll grow old in and our kids can visit whenever and bring their kids with them” you tell him and Steve can’t help the small grin that cracks along his face at the sentiment.
“Is this you saying it’s you and I forever Rosy?” he inquires, devious eyes glimmering into your own and you laugh, cheeks flushing red.
“Well I’d say moving in together kinda deals the deal” you tell him and Steve grins before reaching over to grab your waist. Much to your surprise he lifts you effortlessly over and into his lap where his face nuzzles into your neck.
“Then it’s you and me forever, I promise” he tells you, warm breath tickling your skin. Now you both could indulge in things refined and hide your hearts from the harder times.
This marked the start of drowning your doubts in dry champagne and dreaming of your future. A future that if you dreamed hard enough could include real pearls, foreign cars, caviar and cabernet wine. Yet the real riches was a future with each other, a future that included kids and endless memories to be shared. You didn’t really care if you only ever lived in this apartment, the boy curled up next to you was the real dream.
“Another toast” you say, reaching for your mug and handing Steve his own. He follows right along, the bright red liquid sloshing up the side. This was something you wanted to say before the old versions of yourself end and the new ones begin.
“A toast to how it’s been and to all the new things we get to love. Including each other” you say and Steve happily clinks the mug against your own as you both tip back the sweet wine since Steve hated dry.
“I’ve loved these days and I’ll love the new ones too” Steve mutters into your neck and you smile and settle against him, finally relishing in the fact you were both sat in your shared living room. A space you and Steve could share while you got big wig jobs and engaged. A space designed for the both of you to grow as a couple who was meant to last forever.
“You think we’ll get tired of each other?” you voice your worries, knowing now that you shared such close quarters you were bound to find flaws within one another.
“Maybe but I’ll always love you more, and isn’t that how it’s supposed to work?” he asks, voice a soft hum into the late night of the barren home. You had a lot of work ahead of you but at this very moment you couldn’t bring yourself to care.
“I guess so” you smile, a softness twisting in your gut at how in love you are with this man beside you.
“Wait! I have an idea!” Steve suddenly says, sliding you delicately off his lap and to the ground. He’s up in a second, eyeing the labels of each of the boxes in search of something you’re not sure of. You watch with curiosity, waiting to see what the boy could possibly be up to now.
“Ah-ha!” he lets out once he finds what his looking for, large hands pulling back the folded cardboard pieces and digging inside. It’s when the familiar flash of silver is revealed you realize he’s in search of his boombox.
Finding the outlet Steve makes work of prepping the stereo for some mood music. It’s no surprise when the familiar flash of a Billy Joel album is pulled from the bottom of the box. He grumbled only slightly when he realized he needs to rewind the tape, smashing the button with an annoyed scowl. Yet when the tape finally spins back to the beginning, a grin covers his lips instead, as a familiar song starts to fill the room. Say Goodbye to Hollywood, the classic beginning of Billy’s 1976 album Turnstiles. A true testament to his talent, and one of Steve’s favorites.
“Dance with me?” he asks, hand held down to you on the ground and you don’t even hesitate to clasp your own with his, allowing him to lift you up and into his arms before spinning you around the room.
“Tell me something good?” you ask him, heart thumping softly against his own as you both sway around the living room, the barren walls soon to hold a lifetime of memories.
“The first time I heard this song I was spending the night at my Grandparents. I was nine and we were all in the kitchen making cookies. I remember my Grandma smelling like fresh flowers and the way my Grandpas laugh made you feel safe. Turnstiles had just come out, Billy’s latest album and Grandpa knew I hadn’t heard it yet. So he played the vinyl while I frosted cookies and this song began to play. Now every time I hear it I’m back in that kitchen just happy to have two people who really loved me” Steve says, a soft sadness cast over his eyes and you can’t stop yourself from pulling him close and leaving a soft kiss on his lips.
“I really would’ve liked to meet them” you whisper, hand curling at the back of his neck and fingers grazing the small tufts of hair there. He smiles and gives a soft squeeze to your waist, pulling you impossibly closer.
“They would’ve loved you. My Grandpa would point out how smart you are, tease me about it too. Ask how I got a girl like you to date a doofus like me. And my Grandma, she would bake you pies and insist on sewing all your clothes when they got old and worn. Talk about how much she wished she had a granddaughter” Steve says like he knows and it’s because he does. They were the two people in his life who always made him feel safe and he knew them better than anyone. It sucked they weren’t here but knowing how much they would’ve loved you is comfort enough.
“I see them in you. In the way you take care of the kids and in the way you love me” you say and the look he gives you is different than any look you have ever received. Your heart accelerates just at the sight and before you can even process it the boy is kissing you like his life depends on it.
“I’m going to love these days too” he suddenly says, pulling back from the kiss a little breathless. A small laugh escapes your lips as he hugs you close.
“Yeah, well I count on having many of them”

I am a dead poet's society fan who is also a swiftie.
However, I did not watch the movie because of the album and I'm tired of all the people who are putting her down due to absolutely no reason?
Like, you might not like her music and I respect that wholeheartedly but if you think you are better than others because you don't like a popular artist and think ger music is 'basic' and it 'sucks' then please get a life. If you think she is a serial dater who only writes songs about her exes - then that's blatant mysogyny because 1. She doesn't, 2. Who doesn't.
I did not expect this from the dead poets society fandom. Hating a popular artist does not give you a personality please.
I dislike a lot of artists, some of them are popular but I have never made a single post about how seemingly shallow they are. I hate to break it to you, haters you are equally, if not much more obsessed with her than we are.
And she has written so. many. songs that are dead poets society coded (evermore, my tears ricochet, hoax, exile, the lakes, this is me trying, mirrorball, forever winter). She is a respected songwriter who can weave wonderful stories if you are willing to check them out.( if you think you could've written folkmore in your notes app - release the album king )( and no one is saying all her stuff is poetic- but a lot of it is )
The Dead Poets fandom is a sacred place abd it's not being overcome by 'shallow white girls' ( because everything a teenage girl likes has to be annoying and stupid ).
You do not become a more profound person by making hate posts all day. Makes you look extremely pathetic.

Ridge Academy, NY
4/24/60
Being at Welton was exactly what Charlie needed. He stayed there up until Wednesday when he finally got tired of crashing on the dorm floor and eating leftovers stolen from the dining hall. One thing he didn’t miss was Hellton Hash. So he packed his things and gave all his friends tighter hugs before taking the long trek back to Ridge where he had the rest of break to think about everything that had happened. The time to figure out exactly what he needed to say when he saw Evelyn again.
The first few nights back with Nate were weird. Especially when Nate filled him in about Evelyn finding out about his crush. Nate assured him she made no mention of reciprocating the same feelings but Charlie was just glad she knew. In a way she deserved too, even if they were together now. That’s not the kind of thing you go your whole life without knowing. Especially when it’s one of your best friends that you’ve known forever. If she did reciprocate any feelings for him he would honestly understand. They had been there for each other longer.
When Sunday rolls around he’s able to convince Violet to leave their dorm room, let Charlie wait in plain sight for Evelyn’s return. Evelyn couldn’t avoid him if he was in the one place she needed to go and never expected him to be. So he sat against the soft pillows of her bed, reminiscing on the very first time he laid against them, wishing he had his legs tangled with her own. Patiently waiting and desperate to see his girl after all this time. He needed a hug whether she was still mad at him or not.
It’s when he’s watching a particular cloud of smoke from his cigarette drift towards the open window does he begin to hear the turn of the lock on the door. He sits up quickly, eyes cast on the dark oak as he hopes it’s finally her coming back. Of all the times he pictured this conversation this week he did not imagine how fast his heart would be thrumming in his chest. The anticipation of finally getting to see her after all this time. He hated that he couldn’t call her and hear her voice. Ever since he started at Ridge he hadn’t gone that long without talking to her.
“Charlie?” she’s too confused to be mad, but only for a second, because her curious brows turn upward sharply as she remembers fairly quickly her anger towards him. Charlie ignores it and smiles anyway, watching as she closes herself into the room.
“How was break?” he tries and she rolls her eyes, ignoring him as she lifts her duffel bag to the top of her desk and unzips it so she can unpack. “What, not good?”
“I thought you didn’t smoke” is all she says and Charlie glances at the filter in his hand, the end glowing red and he sighs before reaching and snuffing it out on the window sill.
“I don’t but I was able to recover my stash and you’d be surprised how nerve wracking it was waiting for you” he says and Evelyn can’t help but look at him and see if he was lying. He had only mentioned the stash once and that could only mean he went to Welton while she was gone.
“You went back?” she whispers, torn on prying further into the subject or still being angry with him.
“Yeah, I needed to figure out some things and I really needed to see my friends” he tells her and her hands that were unpacking slowly begin to stop as she gives him all her attention.
“Oh, that’s nice” is all she can bring herself to say and Charlie chuckles, moving to jump off her bed and approach her. She can’t help but admire how handsome he looks in his white t-shirt and black sweatpants. It’s clear he’s been waiting for her since breakfast and her heart soars at the thought.
“It was, especially because the guys helped me realize what an idiot I was” he says with amusement dancing in his eyes and Evelyn can’t help the small laugh that leaves her as he says this.
“You are an idiot” she confirms, unable to stop her hands from reaching out and wrapping around his waist. Charlie accepts the embrace, needing it just as much as her.
“I know, which I why I should’ve told you everything. It’s just, I kept looking at this school like it was some prison. Somewhere I had to serve out a sentence until I got back to my real life, and because of that, I looked at all you and your friends like people who didn’t matter” with each word her grip on him loosens, taking a step back and Charlie lets her because he knows these words hurt.
“I know now that it isn’t true. I was just so heartbroken and hurt by the world that I couldn’t tell you guys had good intentions. That you actually cared about me. I kept thinking, how could these people who have only known me for a few months, and know nothing about me, ever understand? Thing was I didn’t even let any of you try and that was my mistake. Time is meaningless when it comes to loving someone, hell I should know because it didn’t stop me from loving you” Charlie freezes as the words fly out of his mouth and she gapes back at him, like every sentence he says is being seared into her skin.
“You love me?” Evelyn mutters, mind reeling and heart pounding against her ribs. The whiplash of going from feeling unwanted to loved could do that to a person.
“Well yeah and it scared the shit out of me because the last time I loved a person like this they died” Charlie answers and Evelyn can’t help the smile that appears on her face. Much to Charlie’s surprise she eliminates the distance between them again and presses a quick kiss to his lips.
“Will you tell me?” she asks after pulling away, eyelashes fluttering against the tops of her cheeks and Charlie nods even though the thought of even recalling the events still stings.
“Yeah, I want too” he tells her and she can tell for the first time in the entirety of ever knowing him he’s being 100% honest with her. So she leads him to the bed, tugging him in with her as she gets comfortable to hear the whole story.
Which she does. Charlie doesn’t leave anything out. Telling her all about how Neil and him met as kids and were inseparable ever since. He told her everything from Keating and his wild teaching tactics and how he told them about the Dead Poets Society. Explained how they made their own Dead Poets Society and how they all started to feel like they could conquer the whole world. Then he told her about Neil lying about the play and his Dad finding out. How Neil did it anyway and Mr. Perry took him home that night. How he woke at 2am with a call from Mrs. Perry saying he was gone. How he had to go to each and everyone of of his friends rooms and repeat it over and over despite it not sinking in yet. How numb he was while he watched Todd run and curse at the sky.
He explained how he was so full of feelings and had no idea where to put them. That he became angry, bitter, began to lash out. How all of this led him to punching Cameron for throwing Keating under the bus in order to save his own ass. How he refused to sign the paper and they booted him out of the school until he felt nothing at all. He didn’t even get any comfort from his parents because of how angry they were with him and then he ended up here before he could ever come to terms with what happened to him. That was why he was so closed off and why he didn’t want to get to know anyone here. Evelyn was persistent though and somehow that had saved him. She stayed silent for it all.
“Charlie, I’m so sorry” she says when he’s finally done, tears seeping out of her eyes because she had never truly heard of anything that tragic and all this time he was holding all that in.
“It’s okay, he’s free now right?” he gives his own teary eyed smile back and Evelyn can’t help the hiccup of a cry she lets out as she hugs him close.
“You still didn’t deserve to go through all of that” she says and Charlie sighs, hand reaching to run through her long brunette hair.
“Yeah but now I have you and all my new friends. So I’ll make it through, don’t you worry” he says and that earns him another sweet kiss from the girl against him. When she pulls away he smiles at her, hand reaching up to brush her tears away.
“Thank you for telling me, I didn’t mean to be so harsh the last time we spoke. I was just so angry and Nate knew just the right button to push” she says with the soft shake of her head, looking away as she settles into the humiliation of how she had treated him.
“It’s okay, you had every right to be upset. I wasn’t thinking straight about us or anything” he tells her, hand guiding under her chin and lifting her gaze back to him. The contentment of this moment was something he had been waiting for a long time. He was glad she was no longer mad and that she finally knew everything. He just couldn’t enjoy it, not quite yet. “But there is one thing”
“What?” she questions, eyebrows furrowed and trying to determine what else Charlie could possibly have to say.
“You should talk to Nate though, it won’t feel right until you settle things between you” this was not what she had expected him to say and even though she had forgiven Charlie she wasn’t sure she was ready to forgive him.
“I don’t have anything to say to him” she says, stubborn as always, and trying to hold her ground, but Charlie sees the falter. The longing for her best friend and wanting it to go back to the way it was.
“Yes you do, which is why he’s all alone in our room right now waiting for you. He has some things to say too” Evelyn hates how suffocating this feels but she knows Charlie is right. She knows this isn’t something she can just ignore so she stands with a groan anyway.
“I’ll go on one condition” she tells him, finger pointed and stern eyes shining into his own. Charlie grins in amusement, enjoying the sight of the very mousy girl trying to stick her ground.
“Anything” he agrees, hands reaching up to lay leisurely behind his head but she continues to stare him down.
“You have to unpack for me and stay in here tonight” Charlie snorts at the request, thinking it would’ve been something he would hate but he didn’t mind one bit. Even if he got caught.
“That’s it. It’s a deal princess” he chuckles and she shakes her head, moving to her desk where she had started removing piles of clothes.
“My underwear drawer is off limits” she tells him and Charlie bellows with laughter, watching as she grabs her unmentionables and tosses them into the top drawer of her dresser. Slamming it shut for extra effect.
“Agh, you’ve broke my heart” he teases, voice dripping of sarcasm as he drops a hand to his heart. Putting on a show and she just glares before glancing at the door.
“I can’t believe I’m agreeing to this” she says with the shake of her head before starting towards the door.
“Wait” Charlie says and she turns to see him gesturing her towards him. She obeys and he’s quick to wrap her in a deep kiss, tongue softly gliding against her own, and breaking apart just as fast.
“Good luck” he tells her and she’s gaping back at him, shocked and breathless, and a little annoyed he gave her a taste of something she now has to wait for.
“You’re so annoying” she tells him and he just laughs, snuggling up in her bed, hand interlaced with her own.
“Maybe, I just wanted to make sure you remembered how good I kiss while Nate tells you all about loving you” he jokes and she just rolls her eyes, grinning right back at him as she lets go of his hand and starts for the door. He matches that smile as she slips out and starts the trek to the boys dorm.
The closer she gets the more nervous she feels, not ready to face the boy after so many things have come to light. All of break she realized how so many moments between them was more and she never realized. She had started to feel bad herself. Feel bad that she never noticed how hard he was trying. She was his friend, they could’ve just talked, but instead she was oblivious and he refused to break her state of ignorance. Sadly she had to face the music now which is what brings her face to face with his door.
For a moment she almost lets herself in, like she always would, but before her hand can meet the handle she stops. Realizing now their friendship had changed whether either of them wanted it to or not. With an empty pit in her stomach she decided to knock, something she hadn’t done to this door in a very long time. He must be expecting her because the ‘come in’ he hollers out holds no enthusiasm, only dread.
“Hi” Evelyn lightly smiles as she pushes the door open, spotting the boy at his desk, textbooks opened in front of him. He gives a tight lipped smile back, uneasy over how this encounter might play out.
“Hey” he mutters back, watching as she crosses the room to Charlie’s bed, perching herself on the side. He ignored the jealousy burning in his stomach, knowing she did it because it made her feel safe. Secure in a possible messy conversation.
“I’m sorry, for how I reacted. I didn’t mean to be so blinded by anger, it was just a lot to take in” Evelyn starts, eyes cast on her interlocked hands on her lap. The bed smells like Charlie and she instantly remembers he’s laying in her own and that thought comforts her.
“I’m sorry I never told you, I think deep down I always knew I wasn’t the one for you” he responds and Evelyn lifts her head, curious eyes gazing into his own as her eyebrows draw together.
“What do you mean?” She inquires, needing to know what exactly this meant.
“I know you think you’ve been unwanted your entire life but I know that isn’t true. You’re just one of those people destined for one person and the day I met Charlie I should’ve known it was him. I meant what I said at that dance, he understands you in a way I always wished I did” Nate tells her, a forlorn look on his face and Evelyn feels her eyes water.
“I don’t want to lose you Nate, please tell me we can still be friends?” She asks, voice heavy with the threat of tears and Nate smiles at her.
“I’ll always be your friend Evelyn, and I’ll get over this too. He deserves you” he says, standing from his desk to approach her and Evelyn laughs lightly, head tipping back to keep the tears at bay.
“You deserved me too. I’m sorry I was too blind to see it, but I think you’re right. I never noticed because I was never meant to see you in that way” and Nate nods as she agrees with him, voicing the very thing he had been afraid of all those years of loving her. Surprisingly it didn’t hurt as bad a she thought it would.
“Friends then, and no more keeping secrets” he tells her and she brings her head back down to look at him, standing from Charlie’s bed as she interlocks her hands with his own.
“Agreed” she says with a smile before wrapping him tightly in a hug. Nate accepts it, happy he didn’t lose her like he always thought he would. It was going to be hard at first, he knew that, but at least everything was out in the open. He could learn to move on, find the person meant for him. After all they still had senior year left in this school.
“Now let me finish studying, and I’ll see you and Charlie at dinner?” Nate questions as he loosens his grip on her and Evelyn nods, confirming the statement as she reaches and brushes her hair behind her shoulders.
“Perfect, I have to make sure Charlie didn’t completely ruin my room anyways. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked him to unpack for me” Evelyn tells him and Nate laughs loudly, bringing a hand up to his chest.
“I can’t believe you let him do that Miss Organization” Nate teases and Evelyn shrugs, eyeing the door that will soon guide her back to the boy she had come to adore so much.
“I don’t know, I guess he just teaches me to loosen up” Evelyn says and Nate grins, hand reaching to squeeze her shoulder, because that was all he ever wanted of his uptight and confident friend. To find someone who could mellow her out when needed and make sure everything was okay.
“Go ahead, I’ll see you later. If I were to guess he’s probably already gone through your underwear drawer by now” and Evelyn laughs, realizing how close Nate and Charlie had gotten in this short amount of time without her realizing. She just nods and offers one last hug before starting for the door.
“Thanks Nate” she says with no explanation as to why before slipping out the room and rushing off to find her boy. The very one she waited her entire life for and now finally got.
When she shoves the door to her dorm open, Charlie instantly lifts his hands from her bag on her desk, eyes frantic as he watches the girl barrel into the room. “I didn’t touch your underwear!”
Evelyn laughs, looking at the boy who just smiles at her, having put away majority of her clothes by now. She just shakes her head and shuts the door behind her, walking towards him so she can wrap her arms around his waist. Charlie drops his arms, wrapping them right back and calming down from the hectic entrance that had scared him.
“I love you too” she tells him softly and a smile cracks along Charlie’s face, his hold tightening around her as she repeats the words he had let slip so casually earlier.
“You do?” he can’t help but ask and Evelyn nods, tipping up on her toes to press a small kiss to the boys lips, eyes never fully shutting to gaze into his own.
“I do, and I think I always will” she tells him and Charlie grins before kissing her deeper this time, hand curling up and into her hair as he guides her face against his own. To think he had the dream of being a playboy just to fall in love with the first girl he met here.
“Then let’s get started on always”

1989: THE RECORD
Filming Dead Poets Was an Initiation For Young Actor
by Valerie James
The Record
June 6, 1989
Robert Sean Leonard, who portrays a tormented and misunderstood young man in the new movie, "Dead Poets Society," describes working with actor Robin Williams and director Peter Weir as "his baptism."
"I've learned so much," Leonard said the other day in a Manhattan restaurant as he talked about growing up in Ridgewood and his early fascination with acting.
The movie, which stars Williams, is being touted by Touchstone Pictures as the thinking man's alternative to this summer's crop of adventure movies.
Leonard, 20, moved to New York City two years ago and now lives in a studio apartment in Chelsea. His parents moved to Waldwick. Between acting jobs, he attends Fordham University in the Bronx where he is majoring in history. "I think studying history is much more interesting than studying acting," he says. "Besides, I learn more about acting by performing." Leonard made his film debut in "The Manhattan Project." He also appeared in "My Best Friend is a Vampire." He has a string of stage performances to his credit, including "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and "Breaking the Code," in which he played a British schoolboy opposite Derek Jacobi.
It's a brutally hot day and Leonard is poking at the shrimp in his seafood platter. He is dressed casually in a cotton shirt and slacks.
And yes, that well-scrubbed look and innocent eyes that are so convincing in the movie are very much in evidence.
He began acting at age 12. His first speaking part, he says, was belting out the song "Gary, Indiana" at the top of his lungs in a Ridgewood summer stock production of "The Music Man". He took morning classes at Ridgewood High School and pursued his acting career in the afternoon.
A few years ago, he said, his father retired from his job as a Spanish teacher at Pascack Valley High School. His mother still works as a private nurse. His sister teaches English in the Park Ridge school district, and his brother recently graduated from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.
Leonard has just completed a nine-week engagement in a Philadelphia stage production which, he says, had a mercifully short run. He is preparing to audition for several parts in this summer's New York Shakespeare Festival, which explains why he's carting around a copy of Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus."
Right now, he'd much rather talk about his role as Neil Perry in "Dead Poets Society." The movie, which opens locally this week, stars Williams as John Keating, an irreverent English teacher who challenges the rigorous academic life at a boys prep school in Vermont in the 1950s.
Keating urges his young students to free themselves from the shackles of conformity and live life to its fullest.
The idea appeals to seven young men in his poetry class, including Perry, who decide to revive the school's defunct Dead Poets Society in order to experience love, passion, and life through poetry.
Perry is a romantic who yearns for an acting career but is thwarted by disapproving parents who are hell-bent on getting him into medical school.
Perry goes against his father's wishes and performs in the school's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." His Puck wins tumultuous applause. But he is hustled out of the school auditorium by his irate father, who takes him home and informs him that he will be sent to another school and will become a doctor.
Perry's confrontation with his parents takes place in their impeccable living room, and the background music swells as his stern-faced father asks him to explain his undisciplined behavior. Perry searches for the courage to tell his father that he wants to be an actor. When his courage fails, the movie audience gasps.
"I couldn't believe the reaction," says Leonard, who attended a screening of the movie the previous night. "People were actually yelling at the characters on the screen."
To him the movie was wonderful, creative work. But it was an effort, he says, that would not have succeeded except for the talents of Williams and Weir. "This has been my baptism," he says. "Peter Weir taught me so much."
"Yes, it was hard work and the days were 14 hours long. But I've never worked with a director who was so intense, so creative, and so giving." Leonard downplays his performance as he talks about the filming of certain key scenes. The scene in which he urges a classmate to throw away a desk set, the second in a row he received as a birthday present from his parents, is his favorite, he says, because Weir allowed him to improvise.
The scene begins with Todd, the classmate, sitting dejectedly by the desk set. When Perry tells him to throw the desk set away, it's as if someone understands Todd's inner agony for the first time. "Don't worry," Perry says. "You'll probably get another one next year". This is Leonard ad-libbing, and the screening audience loved it. "I didn't think it was funny when I said it," says Leonard. "It just seemed to be the natural thing to say." Leonard says Weir encouraged the actors to perform spontaneously, although he kept a tight reign on the antics of Robin Williams. "Robin wanted it that way," explains Leonard.
And what did Leonard learn from Williams. "He told me not to become famous," Leonard said, smiling.

ahaha I was the one that said Cameron would be a history buff but it’s literally so true. You cannot convince me otherwise. When that boy is in his 30s he definitely did war reenactments and embarrassed the shit out of his kids.
I love the concept of pool parties at Charlie’s house (if he wasn’t in preparatory school he would def give off Steve Harrington vibes)
all the Meeks and Pitts ones 100%
especially the minecraft library
DPS headcanons
charlie can't bake for shit, like he literally can't even make a box cake. he always screws something up
on the other hand, pitts is an amazing baker. the dude will make a whole damn cake from scratch like it was no big deal
anderperry = adhd and autism duo. you pick who is who
cameron is a history buff. i saw something saying he'd love top gun and i totally agree. that kid is a NERD
todd's a cat person
neil likes both. whatever makes todd happy makes him happy
charlie's a lightweight, unlike todd who (as we know) can down whiskey like nothing
considering DPS is set in 1959, meeks and pitts definitely were marvel and/or dc comics nerds. maybe one liked marvel and one liked dc, and they constantly fought about which was better. or they both like one franchise and trash talked the other
the rooftop radio dance party was totally not meeks and pitts' only dance party. they've had many
all the poets have at least been to charlie's huge house once and done stupid shit in his pool. somebody definitely belly-flopped off the diving board, really regretted it, and now it's an inside joke between all of them (probably be Knox or Pitts, if i'm honest.)
meeks likes plants. he's totally got a few small plants in his and pitts's dorm. totally has a tiny succulent named after some superhero (modern!au he'd so name it something dumb like megatron)
if transformers had come out when the poets were kids, pitts so would've been a transformers kid
charlie totally has converse (specifically red ones) and draws on the rubber parts (this is inspired from a comment on my post where i drew on my vans)
in relation to the last one, he's totally written carpe diem on the shoes. and a lighting bolt
modern!au knox would play fortnight 24/7 and never shut up about it
modern!au todd and neil have a shared farm on stardew valley. and a minecraft house
scratch that, all the poets have a minecraft server they all play on. charlie's house looks like ass while todd and meeks have a library that looks better than most modern architecture
growing up, meeks would sit in the library for hours skimming through the encyclopedias until he found anything that caught his eye. he'd be there form when the library opened to until it closed. the librarian eventually caught on to his schedule and started bringing him little sandwiches and chips and a juice, and always brought him something in the morning, like a granola bar.
maybe that's how pitts and meeks met. pitts was looking for cool like sci-fi novels and saw meeks sitting all by himself with a giant pile of encyclopedias next to him. pitts picked out a cool book and sat by him, the two never saying a word. this continued for a few weeks until one of the two worked up the courage to introduce themself. they became fast friends.
cameron over prepares. always has bandaids on him. mostly because charlie's constantly getting hurt
anyways, i could ramble for days! lmk if you like stuff like this and i can post some more headcanons and stuff

Happy Birthday Steve
Tumblr media
A short and sweet peek at a morning with your favourite birthday boy.
Word count: 533
Author’s note: seeing as it’s our boyfriend Joe Keery’s birthday, I felt a wee bit inspired to write some more early morning Steve sweetness 🩷 written on my phone and barely proofread, but we move!
Tumblr media
Your eyes open to milky white dawn on the walls, dappled with morning sun like gold-leaf breaching through the gauzy curtains. In that cocoon between sleep and wakefulness, you feel the warm weight of his arm and the puff of slumber-sweet breath against you.
Steve radiates warmth like a personal space heater throughout the seasons, like the welcoming hug of home and comfort and safety when you need him.
You turn your head on the pillow to watch him, older now than he was when you fell asleep together last night. Lifting your heavy head, you brush a kiss to his temple and murmur ‘Happy Birthday Steve’ quiet enough not to wake him fully, loud enough to leech into his hazy peace so he knows he is loved and adored and worshipped.
It is too early move and begin the day proper. Too soon to begin brewing coffee and toasting bagels and cutting up fruit to share between the sheets. You are too comfortable to slip away from the warm bed to place a candle in the surprise cupcake and sing a quiet ‘Happy Birthday to you’ in your morning voice in place of the usual shrill of the alarm.
Soon, in time. Not yet.
Steve shifts beside you, pulling you close again as he huffs into the pillow. The sleepy scowling frown between his brows softens, relaxed again as he dreams on. The smooth pad of your thumb passes over the crease, chasing away the dregs of whatever pissed him off inside his head. You look forward to hearing what it was, told in his tired timbre, when he wakes.
When - not if, when - he wakes and catches you staring, gazing, mooning over him, he will smile into the cotton pillowcase and call you a creep, light-voiced without an ounce of malice or meanness. He will pull you close and pretend to groan as you pepper his face and anywhere else you can reach with birthday kisses until his cheeks are pink and aching, until you are both at bursting point with how much you adore each other, how happy you are together.
There’s a party planned for later, much later and too far away from your dreamy morning bliss to fret about. The cake is ordered and the balloons will be bright and round, there will be paper plates stained with pizza grease and sweet icing. The Party is surprise-party-ready with presents for Steve - who you think has cottoned on to the plans but he has kept schtum out of kindness. He turned a blind-eye to the hushed heads-together chats with Robin, the phone calls with Dustin or Max or a cacophony of competing voices on the other end.
It will be far from the for-show extravagance of his childhood birthday parties and the cheap-beer fuelled ragers of his teens. As long as you are there, propped on his lap as he blows out candles or tucked under his arm with your fingers in his back pocket in the kitchen, it will be a good birthday.
But for now, you linger in that cosy space with the weight of Steve’s arm keeping you near and his breath on your neck.

Winter 1986
If I'm gonna lose it I might as well be doin' it right
Steve can’t tear his eyes away from the clock. It had been like this his entire shift. Robin had already yelled at him twice for not helping her restock but how could he? How could he do something as mundane as putting movies on a shelf when he knew in just two hours you will be standing at your door and ready to go?
He had been working to hard anyway, picking up shifts just to fill the time when Robin and the kids were at school, and to spend more time with you. It had been back breaking and the overtime had run him down. The only thing even keeping him alive was doing a nine to five shift and knowing it was one step closer to getting enough money to share a life with you.
When the clock finally strikes five he’s out the door as fast as Cinderella at midnight, leaving Robin in his dust who just rolls her eyes because her best friend is dumb and in love. He knew he didn’t have the money to go on a trip but for the first time since starting at Family Video you both had the weekend off, so he was going to take his girl on a get away trip. Whether you picked him up, met him at the station, or rode in his car for hours. He couldn’t afford a vacation but he could take the strain if it meant going with you.
“Hey baby, you ready?” he calls out, pushing the door open to your home. When he sees you scurry down the stairs, bag hung over your shoulder he can’t help but smile.
“How was work?” you beam at him, arms coiling around his neck the minute his wrap around your waist. He presses a sweet kiss to your lips before providing an answer.
“Long, you ready?” he asks, desperate to hit the road and have you to himself all weekend.
“Yes Mr. Eager” you say, poking at his sides and he lightly flinches and pulls away.
“I’m just excited baby, we got some money to spend tonight” he grins that Steve Harrington grin at you and you just roll your eyes, used to effect he had on you.
“No we don’t but I suppose we can treat ourselves this one time” you smile back at him, knowing this was a big step in your relationship. This was your first trip together and even if it was small it meant things were getting even more serious between you.
“Yes, let’s do this thing” he claps and you roll your eyes, moving to put on your shoes. Steve shakes away his weekday blues as he lets the anticipation of the weekend envelop him. He knew pretty soon he’d be leaving with the wages he was receiving but at the very least he could treat you to something fun.
“Come on baby, take me away” he says as your hand interlocks his and you step out the door. You roll your eyes at his excitement despite secretly loving it.
You had been excited for this trip all day too, preparing and watching the clock for when Steve would arrive. Making sure you had a meal, shower, and change of clothes for the small getaway trip. When he finally came through that door it was like a breath of fresh air to your lungs. In just a few hours you’d be in Indianapolis, in a small motel, and seeing the city for the very first time.
Taking off down the road, dusk falling upon you, you fumble through the cassettes in Steve’s center console. Searching for the perfect road trip album. Just as your fingers find the colorful album art you grab it quickly and pop it into the stereo. Streetlife Serenader starting through the speakers. Suddenly Steve chuckles to himself and you give him a curious look.
“What?” you pry, hand curling around his arm on the gearshift.
“Nothing, I just think it’s funny I find a way to burn my money as quick as I earned it” he says, flashing you a smile that holds no regret. As much as you both had been saving up to get out of that crummy job, small set backs like this made it all worth it. You can’t have a future together if you don’t spend time together now.
“You’ll earn it back next week” you tell him, eyes glancing over his form. The boy you had come to love so much in the last year.
“I’d just broke even tonight, but I know it’ll be alright. There is no one else I’d rather be doing this with than you” he says, leaning over to offer a quick kiss before facing the road.
“I’m excited. I’ve never been to a big city. What do you think the canal is like?” you muse, excited to be somewhere other than small town Hawkins for once.
“Big, what do you think the motel bed will look like?” he asks, daring a glance at you and you gasp softly, hand reaching to smack his chest.
“Steven, it’s vacation. We can’t stay in the room the whole time” you tell him with the shake of your head and he laughs.
“I know Rosy but I just worked an eight hour day at the video store and am now driving for God knows how long. I’m dreaming of that bed and more specifically you in it” he tells you earnestly and your ears burn pink, proving that nickname even further. Steve just smiles at your reaction and lets go of the gearshift to lace his fingers with your own.
“We’ll be there soon enough” you tell him, lifting his hand to press a soft kiss to his knuckles.
It was shocking how the closer you got to the city, the more you could see the bright light in the distance. You had heard how cities were always awake and until now you never really understood what that meant. It’s not until the car finally meets road between sky high buildings, lit up like Christmas trees, do you understand exactly what that means. By this time now in Hawkins the street lights would barely be providing enough light to make it down the road but here, the street was clear as day.
“It’s so beautiful” you tell Steve, an excited grin plastered across your face. You can’t tear your eyes away from the people walking the streets, laughing and talking into the night air. Something you’d never see in small street Hawkins. The only night life there was in Hawkins was high school parties in the woods.
“I’ve seen better” Steve says, mischief dripping from his tone as he eyes you in the front seat. You just roll your eyes until Steve needs help navigating the hotel. After two missed turns since you weren’t paying attention to the map, do you finally pull into the two story motel.
“Hurry up, I want to see the room” you urge him when he takes to long to collect the bags and Steve just laughs.
“Says the girl who just picked on me for wanting to see the bed” he says, shutting the trunk and holding each of your bags in each arm.
“Don’t dwell on it now, let’s move it mister” you jump excitedly and he shakes his head even though he loves you and your excitement.
Quickly checking in you discover you’re on the second floor and facing the street, your excitement carries your feet swiftly up the stairs and Steve right behind you. Using the key to unlock the door you’re met with a small room, pink sheets, and brown carpet. It’s nothing special but it’s perfect. You’ve turned and thrown yourself in Steve’s arms before he even has a chance to set down the bags and the boy laughs.
“Happy?” he asks and you nod before pulling back and kissing him as hard as you can.
“Why don’t we freshen up and get some dinner?” you offer as you pull away and steve nods with a smile.
“Sounds like a plan” he agrees easily. He didn’t have the money to be spending on dinner but based on the way his stomach rumbled and the smile on your face, he would do it. He doesn’t wanna stand here and sound accusing since everybody does their share of losing, but if he’s gonna lose, he might as well be doing it right.
When you return from the bathroom content and ready to go, you find Steve has already begun to unpack your bags. Grabbing the sweet boy and his hand, you drag him out into the cool night air, illuminated by city lights and the glow of your love for on another. You never would’ve thought approaching the cute guy in the record store would lead you to this. You couldn’t imagine your life without Steve now, there was just something that made sense. You two just worked.
“Could you ever see yourself in the city?” Steve muses, shoving a french fry in his mouth as he watches you from across the table in a small diner.
“I don’t know, I don’t think so” you respond with the shake of your head, eyes glancing over the various customers here on a late night. As much as the city was beautiful there was no community.
“Why’s that?” he questions further and you shrug, eyes cast on your half ate burger.
“As much as it’s exciting, no one knows anybody here. They’re all strangers and in a way it’s really lonely. When I go somewhere in Hawkins I know everybody. I like having those relationships. Makes me feel like I belong. I don’t think anyone could ever really belong to a city” you finally tell him, eyes shining into his own and Steve smiles.
“Same, even with all the bad things that have happened in Hawkins over the years I couldn’t really see myself leaving everyone, especially the kids” Steve tells you, hand running through his hair and you grin when one strand falls right back into place, stubborn as ever.
“King Steve hasn’t dreamed of living somewhere grander?” you tease and Steve rolls his eyes at the nickname you know he hates. You use it anyway, knowing with you he’d never have a chance to mind.
“Just with you” he answers simply, stunning you silent and you can’t help the cheesy grin that crosses your face.
“Steve Harrington would move out of his parents big luxurious house to just to bum it with a girl” you say but Steve’s stare never falters, eyes locked into your own as he tries to convey every emotion he’s ever had towards you.
“Not just any girl, you” he smiles, voice just barely above a whisper, and you have to glance away from the intensity of his stare. Your cheeks burn pink, reiterating the nickname he had gifted you all that time ago.
“I’m nothing special” you say with the shake of your head, hands reaching to tuck some hair behind your ears. Steve sighs, eyes glancing along the neon lights of the small diner, taking in the smell of grease heavy in the air, and the buzz of the milkshake machine.
“Rosy, before you I never thought I’d be happy again. That I was just one of those guys who peaked in high school and never really found anyone who would love him. Then on a particularly sad day when I wanted to feel close to my Grandpa, I ended up finding you” he tells you earnestly and finally you lift your eyes to meet his own again, a smile covering your face.
“You think it was fate?” you grin, hand reaching across the table to meet his own and Steve just smiles back, thumb brushing over your knuckles.
“Maybe but that day I told you my Grandpas favorite Billy Joel song was the one that described how he felt about my Grandmother and how the right women could turn you around and heal you when you least expect it. You did that to me Rosy, you healed me” he says and the seriousness in his eyes only furthers his point. Your heart is hammering in your chest because you had been waiting a year for Steve to tell you he loves you and this is the closest you had ever gotten. You knew that he did but sometimes it was all you wanted.
“So I’ve got the way?” you ask and Steve smiles, lifting your hand to his lips. Pressing a slow and soft kiss to your knuckles.
“You got more than that baby, you got my whole heart” he tells you and you quickly let go of his hand, rushing over to his side of the booth and practically landing in his lap.
“I’m not hungry anymore, let’s go back to the hotel” you tell him and he laughs, eyes crinkling as he does and you have the urge to kiss him now more than ever.
“Now someone is finally coming around to spending time in bed” he telased you, finger poking into your side, and you roll your eyes as he pulls some cash out of his wallet.
“Whatever, let’s just go” you say, pulling him up and out of the booth to make the short walk back. The city is still just as alive as it was thirty minutes ago and Steve’s confession has made you feel more alive than you’ve ever felt. His pace is swift, eager to be back in the motel, and particularly in bed with you.
“Ooh, postcards!” you grin, eyes catching the new stand that you couldn’t believe was still open this late at night.
“Oh come on, don’t get distracted now” Steve pouts and you can’t help the giggle that escapes past your lips, letting go of his hand to file through the different cards.
“Hey, I promised Dustin I would send one every day we were here” you tell him and Steve shakes his head, arms hooking around your waist as he pulls you close, chin resting on your shoulder.
“Rosy we’re here to three days, barely” he tells you but you’re still just as determined as ever. Loving the kids that came along with being his girlfriend.
“I promised” you pout, finally landing on the one you loved and Steve just chuckles as you pay for it, scribbling a quick message, and sending it off. Preparing to walk away you don’t expect Steve to stop you, hand pulling you back from leaving just quite yet.
“Wait, I gotta write one too” he says, hands grasping a colorful postcard that says ‘Greetings From Indianapolis’.
“For who?” you question but he just hides it, scribbling the pen and address on the card quickly as he hands it to the man behind the stand.
“Don’t worry about it” he tells you and you let it go since you’re desperate to get back to the motel and spend the rest of the weekend with the boy you love.
Which in three days when you return home, you find the postcard amongst your mail with three scribbled words on it.
I love you.

Fall 1985
But I only have these arms to hold you
It’s a dark Fall night. The house smelling of popcorn you had popped earlier to watch during a movie. Halloween decorations had been plastered all over Steve’s home, a home that hadn’t been decorated for any holiday in a very long time. You had changed that though, changed him. You made not only this home full, but his heart. Which is why Steve lies beside you in his bed absolutely hating himself for not being able to tell you how he feels. How much he loves you, how much you had saved him these last six months.
You had been there for it all. Cheering in the stands when he graduated, taking your lunch break to visit him everyday at Scoops Ahoy, not getting jelous of his newfound friendship with Robin, taking care of him when the monsters returned and the mall burned down, and even helping him and Robin get hired at the video store where you had worked this entire time. Everytime he thought you'd leave, somehow you were still there, and he appreciated you for every bit of it. So why the hell couldn't he say it?
He knew why. He knew because everytime he looked at the plastic Halloween decorations filling his home he was brought right back to Tina's Halloween party. Right back to that very bathroom where the only girl he ever loved looked into his eyes and told him he was bullshit. It had been a year but he still remembered how devastated he was, how his heart felt as she ripped it straight from his chest. The look in her eyes was seared into his memory, devoid of any emotion but distate blazing in them. He couldn't relive that, wouldn't relive that. Especially with you.
He may have loved Nancy but with you it was different. With you, he knew you were going to be the one. The one person handcrafted specifically for him. A soul designed to match his own in a large and lonely world. Somehow he had found you and now he wouldn't do anything to risk it, he would guarantee it. It had hurt when Nancy said she didn't love him but if you did. Well that would kill him.
"What kind of candy do the kids like?" you ask in the dark bedroom, voice overlapping that of Billy Joel's from the cassette player. You're My Home played softly throughout the room and you wished Steve knew that was how you felt about him. That until now you were pretty sure you had nowhere to belong and now you belonged to him.
"Why do you ask?” Steve hums, hands reaching to run through your hair. He lived for nights like this, where you just laid here with legs tangled together and talked about things practically meaningless.
"Well I want to make them happy, I know how much they love Halloween. Dustin hasn't shut up about it all week and I want something to cheer Mike up. I know how badly they wanted to dress up as The Goonies but with Will and El gone they can't" you tell Steve, hand lacing with his own under the covers. Steve smiles softly at you and how much you care for the very kids he had taken under his own wing.
"I don't know what kind of candy they like, I'm sure whatever is fine. As for Mike, tell him we can be Andy and Brand. Maybe I can convince Robin to be Data or something" Steve tells you, pressing a kiss to your forehead. The image of Robin in the Data costume meant for Will makes you giggle and Steve is pulling you closer, chest brushing against your own.
"You'd give up our Grease costume for that?" you ask, knowing how excited he was to be Danny Zuko and wear his leather jacket.
"Yeah but don't tell them that. They'll get big heads" Steve grumbles, practically hearing Dustin tease him about how much he loves all of them. You giggle against him and Steve warms over, feeling those very words sitting heavy on his chest. If only he had the words to tell you. He knew you were waiting, wondering why he hadn't said them. If you only had time to understand why he struggled with it so much. Everyone he ever loved left, if he said these words outloud he couldn't risk you leaving him too.
"You're the best Stevie" you tell him, leaning forward and pressing a soft kiss to his nose. Steve hums in delight, not allowing you to back away as he pulls you to his lips and kisses you quickly. He knows you love him, you only said things like that to replace those very words. If he would just say it your response would have been 'I love you Stevie'. Instead he gets broad statements that he has slowly come to despise.
"Yeah, yeah, best babysitter ever" he mumbles and you giggle because even though he pretends to hate it you know how much he loves it. How much he loves those kids. If he didn't he wouldn't spend time with them. One of those very kids was his ex girlfriend’s brother and he never let any of those things stop him. He was always there for them.
"Only the best can handle six kids at a time" you tell him and Steve searches your eyes, loving how when you look at them they’re filled with adoration instead of hate. He knows not saying anything won't change your feelings and you will carry on loving him without it. He just couldn't bring himself to say it, the urge never there even though he was practically dying inside to tell you. He wished you knew how hard it is to say.
Sometimes when he finds himself even close he feels silly. I love you seemed too simple to portray the love he had for you. It was so basic, a word your heard on the radio over and over again. Every song as simple as the last. How unoriginal were his words when the radio repeats them every single day? Even with his love for Billy Joel he figures he'll never find a song to sing you. One that perfectly depicted exactly how he felt about you. He doesn't want to sing those tired words again, words he wasted on people who never loved him back.
“You ever think about having kids?” Steve asks, leaning back into the pillow and staring at his ceiling. You admire the soft tufts of his hair on his chest, the way his bicep flexes as he reaches to tuck his hand under his head. He’s so handsome and it should scare you that your boyfriend of only six months has suddenly asked you about having kids and yet you don’t seem to mind.
“All the time” you tell him earnestly, snuggling into his side and grazing your fingers along his sternum, grinning when he shivers from your touch.
“I want to have a whole bunch, make me feel better about being an only child” Steve says, his hand pressed to your back slowly sliding up and into your hair.
“What do you mean, make you feel better?” you ask, lifting your head to glance at the boys face as he continues to be deep in thought.
“I was a lonely kid, my parents never really cared to pay any attention and without any siblings or cousins I was left to my own devices. I think it’s half the reason I was such an asshole in high school” he says, almost wincing at the thought of how many people he had treated like shit over the years just to guarantee he wouldn’t be all alone.
“You were protecting yourself” you say, understanding exactly what he means and Steve nods, eyes glancing down at your form.
“I want my kids to have built in friends and even better, present parents” he tells you and suddenly you find yourself wanting nothing more than to have kids with the boy beside you.
“You’ll be the best Dad Steve, I just know it” you tell him and there are those words again, sitting on his tongue and begging to escape but he just can’t seem to let them go. He hates himself for it, looking away before you see the regret in his eyes.
“I hope so, I just wish my Grandpa was still around to see it” he says, thinking of the only person in his life who ever really liked him for him when he was growing up. The man who had heaven sent you straight to him when he needed you the most.
“He is, don’t you worry about that Stevie” you tell him, eyes fluttering close as you listen to cassette playing in the room. The boombox clicked, indicating the start of a new song. Worse Comes to Worst slowly filling the room.
“Oh worse comes to worst. I’ll get along” you start singing the melody into the dark night air, the fall breeze fluttering in from the window and brushing against the curtains.
“I don’t know how, but sometimes - I can be strong” Steve starts singing along with you and suddenly your both giggling into the night, sharing a love for one another and a love for Billy Joel. The very man that had brought you two together.
“Do you ever get sick of listening to him?” Steve asks and you know he’s asking you about Billy Joel. You shake your head softly against his chest, gazing into those hazel eyes.
“No, he reminds me of you. Makes me feel close to you no matter where I am. Yet I suppose that’s exactly how he makes you feel about your Grandpa” you say, voice humming along the boys ribs.
“Yeah but now he reminds me of you too” Steve admits and you smile before leaning up and capturing his lips in your own. When you had approached the sad boy in the record store you never would have imagined it would bring you here.
"I'm gonna try and sleep" you tell the boy, snuggling closer and allowing your heavy eyelids to close. Steve smiles softly and presses another kiss to your forehead. He knows life goes on and tonight will soon be gone. Another missed opportunity to tell you exactly how he feels. His wished he had the words to tell you but instead he only has his arms to hold you, pulling you closer into him. It's really all you can ask of any man, to be held with such love even if he won't say it.
"Goodnight Rosy" he mutters, 'I love you' he says in his head. He knows disappointment swells in your chest, having been by his side for six months and waiting to know exactly how he felt about you. The only noise in the dark room now is the voice of Billy Joel and your soft breathing. He pulls you close, relishing in the feeling of having you in his arms. When he’s sure you’re asleep he tells you.
"I love you Rosy, I really do. Just please don't give up on me, I promise I want to say it. You deserve to know just how much I adore you but every person I've ever loved has left me. I know you won't but I need time for my head to catch up with my heart. Until then, if I only had the words to tell you..."

She's got a way of showin', how I make her feel
Steve hated being sad. Yet for the last six months that was all he had felt. He should be over it by now. He wished he was over it, but everyday he went to school just to see Nancy with Johnathon and know everything that he lost. He had given up his friends for her, and when she gave him up for Johnathon, he had no one left. No happy family to come home to, and no friends to spend time with, especially no girlfriend to love. Maybe that was why it was so hard to get over her, because she was the only person he had left and she left him too.
So he woke up on the first day of spring break, no parents, no plans, no one at all. It didn’t matter that the first warm sun was shining through his window and the birds chirped happily outside. He figured he would always be alone and he was still just as miserable as before. The only person he did have was Dustin but how many times can you ask a middle schooler to hang out before it gets weird? Steve didn’t want to find out.
He wasn’t going to last all of spring break like this so he was going to do the only thing that made him feel better. The only thing that gave him enough motivation to get out of bed and get ready for the day. So it’s not long until he is walking out the front door and towards his car. Yet before he unlocked it he stopped, eyes glancing into the bright blue sky, and deciding against the drive. It was sunny and almost seventy, plus a walk would be good for him. So he stuffed the keys back in his pocket and started down the road.
Town was half empty once he got there, signs showing that the new mall being built was already taking away business. It was sad to see the town that once was so busy become a shell of nothing. Kind of like him he supposed. Yet the sight of the familiar blue door eased his mind as he pushed in the one place he hoped would be here forever.
“Hey man, long time no see” Ron, the owner smiles from behind the register. Steve matches the smile right back even though he doesn’t feel it. He wished he did.
“Hey Ron, how’s business been?” he asks, eyeing the various shelves throughout the room.
“I wish I could say busy, but ever since word got out that Sam Goody was being built in the mall, no one really cares about Ron’s Records anymore” he says and Steve nods, his throat tightening at the thought.
“I’m sorry about that man, you know I’ll be a customer for life” he tells him and Ron nods, smiling at the boys kindness.
“You and your Grandpa both” Ron says kindly and Steve has to look away before tears form in his eyes.
“I’m gonna check some records out” Steve tells him and Ron nods as he moves to the section he knows it will be at.
Finally reaching the B’s his fingers start skimming the records. It feels like he’s passed a hundred Barry Manilow records by the time he reaches exactly what he’s looking for. Smiling to himself he scans which ones are there, determined what would be the best to listen to. Something that for an entire forty minutes could make him feel much less lonely in this world.
“Billy Joel huh?” Steve looks up and nearly freezes. There you are, the prettiest girl he’s ever seen, and something about the world stops. He’s not one to be shy but it’s as if the words somehow can’t leave his mouth. There was just something about you. “Since when do boys your age listen to Billy Joel?”
“Hey, he’s still rock n’ roll to me” Steve defends, and it’s cheesy. He knows that, but it doesn’t stop you from laughing. You’re wearing the most perfect smile he’s ever seen and he wants to make you do it again.
“I’m not saying he isn’t, just most guys these days don’t know good music anymore” you say, pulling the record out of his hands and he almost gasps at the way your fingers feel against his.
“Well good music to me is just Billy, always has been” he says and you give him a small nod, smile still on your face. He briefly wonders what it could be about you that makes him suddenly so content.
“Cold Spring Harbor? I don’t think I’ve ever heard it” you say and Steve’s heart clenches.
“It’s his first album, he was only 22 when he wrote it. It’s one of my favorites” Steve tells you and the mischievous grin you give him makes his heart stutter in his chest.
“Well let’s listen to it” you tell him, hand grabbing his own, and leading him to the front of the building. In the front window there’s two chairs and small record player in between. They had been there for as long as Steve could remember, he had sat in them hundreds of times. He sits in his, the one chair he always sat in, and you sit, well in the other. His throat dries as he sees you sit across from him in the chair that had been empty for many years.
“What’s your favorite track?” you muse, hands delicately working to pull the record from its sleeve and place it on the player.
"The first one, She's Got A Way. It was my Grandpa's favorite, the first Billy song he ever played me" Steve says, looking off onto the rows and rows of records. Remembering a time when he was just short enough to be the same height as them. Rushing around and looking for the most colorful covers while his Grandpa went straight to the B's. Then he'd sit in the very chair he was now, ankles just barely hanging over the edge as his Grandpa played him song after song, in the very seat you were sitting in now.
"So that's where it comes from" you muse, the record spinning as you turn on the machine. Steve watches as you set the needle on the record, sratching till it finds its groove, and fills the silence between you both.
"Why is it his favorite?" you ask after a few moments, watching the boy as he let's the words sink in.
"He claimed it was the only song he ever heard that perfectly described how he felt about my Grandmother. How the right women could completley turn you around and heal you when you least expect it" Steve smiles fondly as he repeats those words he hadn't in a very long time.
"A charmer, I'm sure you are too" you say and the shocked look Steve wears has you laughing lightly. It takes Steve only a second to laugh along with you, realizing just how quickly you had revealed him. It's when your laughter calms he realizes the smile on your face has eased his heart more in the last six months than anything else.
"If you must know" Steve says and you giggle again which has Steve wanting to spend more and more time with you.
"Where is this Grandpa of yours, I have a few questions for him?" you ask and Steve freezes, not expecting the words to leave your mouth. It takes him a moment to respond and you sense the discomfort and place your hand on his own. Steve nearly jumps at the electric touch that comes from it.
"He passed away when I was fifteen, right before high school" he tells you, throat tightening around the admittance.
"I'm so sorry, that's awful" you try to comfort but Steve just smiles.
"You would have loved him though. Everyone did. He was my best friend, the only family I really had that spent time with me. Since my Grandma passed when I was ten, me and him made sure to spend all of middle school together" Steve isn't entirely sure why he is telling you this, he just knows your the first person he has been this comfortable around since his Grandpa and he didn't even know your name yet. He didn’t know what it was about you but he figured there didn't need to be a reason.
"That's so sweet, he sounds so special" you tell him and Steve nods, recalling memories he hadn't allowed himself to think about for years.
"He was, just wish he was still around. He was the only person to ever be there for me, front row at every swim meet and basketball game. Was hard going through highschool knowing he was no longer in the stands, but Billy. Well that's all me and him ever talked about. So sometimes, on days like today when I miss him a little extra, I find him in the lyrics of a song" and your heart soars for the boy in front of you. A boy with a deep sadness buried within him. A boy the world hadn't given a chance yet.
"Is he there right now?" you can't help but ask, the last few lines of the song coming through the speakers on the machine. Steve listens, can practically see his Grandpa yelling at him for not making a move. ‘At least ask her name’ he groans and Steve chuckles lightly to himself.
"Yeah he's here. He always is" Steve says and you give him a smile that somehow heals him. "I'm Steve by the way"
"Nice to meet you Steve" you tell him before offering your own name and Steve finds it rattling through his head, the most beautiful name in all of existence, and somehow it belongs to you. The very girl who showed up while he was feeling down and has inspired him without a sound. The beginning notes of You Can Make Me Free fill the silence between you both and Steve sits up, realizing your hand is still atop his own.
"Sorry for spilling my guts" Steve says and you shake your head, wanting him to know that he had done nothing wrong this entire time.
"Don't be, it actually happens a lot. I seem to make people very comfortable. Guess I just got a way about me" and Steve agrees because somehow in just this short exchange you have inspired him to keep on going, reminded him that this is not the end and it won't be all bad. It is like you have some bright light around you and it gives him the strength to keep going.
"Would you maybe want to go get something to eat?" Steve finds the confidence to ask and you beam a smile brightly back at him.
"I'd love to Steve" you tell him, using his name like it now somehow belongs to you and Steve wishes it does. A million dreams of love surrounding you and for the first time since Nancy he finds himself feeling something for a girl he never thought he'd feel again. He just knows he no longer wants to live without you.
"Have fun you two" Ron calls out as you both exit, the record still playing as you both leave it behind. You talk the whole way to the small diner in town, Steve just smiles and listens, loving how everything sounds the way it comes out your mouth. It's as if every word lifts him up as you are walking.
For the rest of the day Steve does his part getting to know you. Making you laugh and flirting where necessary which never fails to make you blush. The sight of your red cheeks alone make his heart soar for you. It's cute the way you show it, exactly how you feel about him. In return you do find yourself charmed by the very boy you couldn’t resist talking to. You wondered where a sweet boy like him had been your whole life and for the first time you aren't as embarassed by the blush on your cheeks as you normally would be.
"I really like you Rosy" he says matter of fact, the nickname falling easily from his lips. You blush at his words again, shaking your head at the boy you figure you aren't getting rid of anytime soon.
"I like you too Steve"
