Of Nightmares and Daydreams

We’re coming down from the high of the previous three chapters. This chapter focuses more on the trauma after an almost catastrophic event and the effect it has on our core six characters. There’s a silver lining-a Sukka moment 🥰

She sees him again. He was running towards the lightning meant for her. Her mind struggled to make sense of the chaos unfolding around. In a flash, she witnessed the lightning strike him causing him to fall to the ground. Despite this, Azula continued to pursue her. Acting quickly, she summoned a whip of water from her waterpouch and lashed out at Azula before she can strike another blow. Katara turns to see Zuko on the ground straining to reach her but another flash of lightning triggers her senses.

Suddenly, Katara jerks from the tub. Her movements cause the soapy water to splash into her mouth, making her cough. She wonders if she dozed off as she realizes that the water has turned cold and hears a knock on the door. 'I-I'm fine.’ She calls out. ‘I-I just slipped. I'll be out soon,' She cradles her face in her hands and lets out a soft sob before quickly composing herself.

Chapter 3 Against All Odds

Two of our heroes will dare challenge the impossible.

The Chief directs his men to take off the blindfolds from Cho and Pakku. ‘Avatar Aang,’ Saipele looks dubiously to the two men with him. ‘To what do we owe this visit?’ Master Pakku looks around in awe, hardly believing the city still exists.

‘Chief Saipele, Prince Zuko needs your help. General Iroh and I would like to ask a favor from you.’ Aang adds, thinking quickly. ‘Zuko was gravely injured during an Agni Kai with his sister. We need to go to the Northern Kingdom to-‘ Aang receives a knowing look from Pakku, signaling him not to share their secret as well. ‘-to get a powerful healer that can help.’ Pakku breathes in relief, grateful for Aang’s quick wit.

‘I’m afraid we don’t have enough time to go to the North on Appa so I was wondering if…If we can ask Shaw to take us there.’

The entire group falls silent. The Chief grasps his chin, pondering Aang’s request. ‘Why don’t you ask Shaw yourself?’

‘Who’s Shaw?’ Master Pakku asks.

Aang grins back. ‘You’ll see.’

Chapter 2 ‘A Journey of Courage’

Toph slumbers next to Aang, with Sokka snoring next to Suki in their shared tent. They met back up at the rendezvous point. The Agrarian Zone - a farmland just outside of the Lower Ring of Ba Sing Se. This is where the Order had established their temporary camp before the arrival of Sozin's Comet. Aang, completely drained from his intense battle with the former Fire Lord, slept for most of the day and was too exhausted to even eat.

The rustling of feet outside of their tent rouses Toph. Sensing something is wrong, she quickly jostles Aang to wake up. As they look out from their tent, they are greeted by a commotion of people running around the camp.

Aang immediately rushes out upon hearing Appa's groans, thinking that Zuko and Katara had returned. But to his surprise, the sky bison is flying away without them. Sokka emerges from the tent, followed by Toph and Suki.

Taang Week Day 3 - Spirit World

“So wait, this place is where you first saw me?”

“Yup! With all your fancy dress and hair!”

“But we didn’t even know each other. Why did the swamp decide to show me?”

“I guess to guide me in the right direction. You and I were meant to find each other. That’s why I thought it would be great to come here for our one year “I-can’t-believe-she-likes-me-back” anniversary!”

“I guess it’s a cool place to hang out since it’s away from most people. Could do without the screaming bird though.”

I don't like "The Runaway" episode. Imho this is a very strange plot, pulled out of thin air. And most importantly, it ignores Toph's really interesting conflict that could have developed her character.

The episode begins with Toph and Katara fighting over their differences. The most disgusting thing here is not even that their quarrel was taken out of nowhere, but a flashback to previous episodes. The authors based the series on the misunderstandings between Toph and Katara at the beginning of their relationship, completely ignoring their subsequent beautiful friendship. Not only did they throw out Katara's concern for Toph in the desert and their time together in Ba Sing Se, but they also pretended that this particular episode resolved all the misunderstandings, which means it was important. This is ugh.

Do you know what I would do instead of this unnecessary quarrel? I would finally resolve the misunderstanding with Aang that has been going on since the episode “The Desert”.

Remember when Aang blamed Toph for getting Appa stolen? Why not resolve this obvious and hanging misunderstanding? I mean, Aang and Toph don't talk alone at all after that episode, and that's bad.

A dedicated episode about their relationship would have filled that gap nicely and would have also strengthened the characters' bond.

Also, it's in this episode that I would show how Toph learns sandbending. Imagine the conflict that could have arisen: after losing Appa in the desert, Toph realized that she isn't such a great earthbender, because there are things that are beyond her control. She hates feeling inferior, especially when that deficiency caused her to lose a friend.

The sand is too loose, she loses its sight as soon as she lets it go. And the only one she can turn to for help is Aang.

Think about it, why are the dunes in the desert so mobile? What spreads sand and makes it so unstable? The answer is the air. To bend the sand, Toph will have to turn to the opposite element and to the one with whom there was no time to resolve the issue: Aang. And all this is connected not only with her desire to get rid of the imperfections of her bending, but also with the goal of never losing friends again and always being able to help them. And also finally make peace with Aang, her very first friend.

Imagine how Aang would teach her to feel the sand in the air. How, for example, she could see the currents of the wind... How the grains of sand would become her guides into the gaping void above her head that Toph had never seen before.

What wonderful emotions we would witness. The blind girl finally saw what was unattainable even with earthbending. I'm sure it would greatly impact Toph's personality and expand her understanding of things, and I want to experience it with her.

If there is a fanfic about this, I'd like to read it. Because the canon, alas, has lost all possibility of implementing something like this. After all, Toph learned sandbending off-screen, as if there was no emotion associated with it
