plus instead of having that 'healing dick,' ratchet also has a shitton of emotional baggage?? and he's not this big strong protector keeping drift safe from his mental/physical demons, if anything it's clearly DRIFT'S first instinct to throw himself between ratchet and danger. i don't get how people characterize drift as this wilting, downtrodden waif. if anything they both have a serious protective streak, except drift throws himself into danger and ratchet scolds him while patching him up

YEAH that's a good point, these fics pigeonhole Ratchet too, just in a much less actively insulting way

it's just frustrating! and like I said it wouldn't bother me nearly as much if this wasn't SUCH a huge fraction of content involving Drift (and also it wasn't improperly tagged so often)

what're your thoughts about ratchet and his fanon interpretation? i see a lot of fanon post-EOS ratchet acting like he's annoyed by drift being clingy, but i always found dratchet to be this genuinely openly loving relationship. obviously they bicker like an old married couple but they're 1) attached at the hip and 2) when ratchet decided to go after drift, that was a major shift in his character where he decided to be more open abt his feelings. plus he looks at drift like a besotted fool

yeah I agree with you, Ratchet's always been the one with the crush and if anyone's the clingy lovesick fool it's definitely him lmAO

I could imagine post-EOS Ratchet pretending to be annoyed by Drift's affection in order to keep up appearances and Drift being more affectionate simply bc it's fun to watch Ratchet try to pretend he doesn't love it but yeah, I think people did kinda latch onto the easy anime trope of Ratchet being more cranky than he really is and Drift being the genki anime crush, which, while OOC, is ultimately pretty harmless and I don't mind it so much

you don’t need to respond to this but just wanted to let you know that i conpletely agree with you 100% on the fanon interpretation of drift and it squicks me out that ppl seem to fetishize that headcanon as a way to make ratchet like, “heal” him or smth. i don’t see it nearly as often (tho maybe i just avoid that circle pretty well) but it always irks me when there’s mention of it

yeah I’ve never talked about it before bc I used to be scared of the tf fandom and that “buymech Drift” headcanon used to be even more popular back when I first got into transformers and I didn’t want to get yelled at but yeah I completely fucking hate that headcanon so much lmAO

I didn’t mind it so much at first, like “eh it’s not my thing but whatever I can read other fics” and then it turned out no actually, I cannot, this fuckin headcanon is god damn everywhere and inescapable, I’m talking I have every keyword and person who writes about it blocked and I STILL TO THIS DAY get hit with it bc it is just so pervasive, like “don’t like don’t read” is impossible bc y’all can’t/don’t tag for shit and every time I block someone to get it off my dash, some new person pops up and I cannot stress enough that is has been this way since at least 2014 when I first joined the fandom (and given how many Drift/Wing fics I’ve seen that have the same headcanon in them I can only assume it’s been going on even earlier than that), like it has been the most insufferable bullshit to put up with and I genuinely can’t believe this headcanon isn’t dead yet, how has it lived this long, the concept has been exhausted it’s time to move on lmAO

“Soundwave is no ordinary Cybertronian”

“Soundwave is no ordinary Cybertronian, inside or out.”

This line in Transformers Prime always stood out to me, and the fact that we never got any clarification is disappointing because the implications are endless. However, after watching Cyberverse, I feel like my third-eye opened so buckle up and hear me out:

Let’s go over some important relevant facts:

We know Soundwave was around during the era of the Quintesson’s rule in the TFP / Aligned continuity (The Covenant of Primus goes so far as to say he was even a member of Sentinel Zeta Prime’s council of thirteen, but that’s another matter).

Because of Cyberverse, we also know that the multiverse exists, and that the Quintessons jump from universe to universe judging them. (See S3 E9: “Quintessons travel to each universe and judge which are worthy of existence. And if they’re found guilty, then that universe is destroyed.“ [x])

We know that the “Judge” must be native to that particular universe. (See S3 E11: "A proper judgement of a universe can only be made by an entity born of that universe.” [x])

Finally: we know when a Judge finds a universe guilty, The Scientist likes to keep a little souvenir for himself: aka, the Soundwave of that universe. (Creepy, but he has good taste).

So here’s my theory. What if when the Quintessons inevitably wound up in the TFP universe, The Scientist got a little carried away and decided to make the newest addition to his collection part of the main event?

TLDR: What if The Scientist altered TFP Soundwave with the intention of incorporating him into that universe’s Judge?

I know that sounds wild, but even from an visual standpoint, there are similarities between his design and the Quintesson’s tech. The biggest one is that The Scientist and Soundwave both have tentacles with biolights (a unique feature only Soundwave has. I mean come on — slap a red filter on him instead of a blue one and he could practically be a Quintesson). Soundwave also has that weird red internal diagnostic thing (?) he used when analyzing Optimus, which is also very reminiscent of the Quintesson’s tech / aesthetic (granted, this is almost certainly a coincidence but still worth noting due to how much it looks like The Scientist’s eye). Soundwave is also consistently show to be smarter and stronger than practically every other character in the series (with the exception of Megatron and Optimus Prime). Perhaps it’s just because he’s the “designated braincell of the Decepticons”, but it could also be because he was built to be that way and learned to use it to his advantage.

Like Ratchet said, “Soundwave is no ordinary Cybertronian, inside or out.” TFP’s universe may have won the war against the Quintessons, but not before Soundwave was turned into a Cybertronian / Quintesson hybrid.
