I recently lost a family member, and while offering condolences, a friend said, "That's hard. I think it's easier when you know it's coming. You can prepare yourself." I used to believe that, as well. Then I realized how incredibly short-sighted that was. We all know we're going to lose our loved ones. Everyone we know is going to die. That is one of the few unarguable facts of life. We don't prepare ourselves. We act as if people are only lost to illnesses that take them from us slowly - draining the life from their bodies over some time. We forget, perhaps purposely, that people wake up in the morning and can be gone by day's end or, make plans for tomorrow but fail to make it through the night. That's a painful truth but one worth remembering. No one is going to live forever, and we need to stop treating each other as if we will.
