A Guide to the HIStory Series

I remember when I first started getting into BL and everyone talked about the HIStory series, but I was a bit confused on what it was all about.

So here's a breakdown:

First of all, the HIStory series is made up of multiple unrelated stories, so you can watch in any order and pick and choose what story lines interest you the most. You can watch all seasons on Viki free with ads.

HIStory1 (the first season) consists of 3 different stories, each with 4 20 minute episodes.

HIStory1: My Hero; After a girl dies, her soul takes over the body of a boy to try to be with her boyfriend again. She has 1 week to make him fall in love with her in this new body or else both she and the boy will die. [SPOILER]: She soon finds out that this boy has had a crush on her boyfriend for a while and decides to let the two men be together.

HIStory1: Stay Away From Me; Two new step brothers move in together when their parents go on their honeymoon. When one of their friends tries to push them together due to her BL fanfic dream, they start to question their feelings for one another.

HIStory1: Obsessed; After a man dies, he is thrown back 9 years in the past and tries to change his life by avoiding his boyfriend, but different circumstances still try to bring them together.

HIStory2 consists of 2 different stories with 8 25 minute episodes each.

HIStory2: Right or Wrong; Feeling start to grow between a single father/professor and his nanny/student as they spend time together raising his 8 year old daughter.

HIStory2: Crossing The Line; An ex volleyball player who had to give up his dreams due to an injury meets a player who he thinks can achieve what he once wanted to and tries to help him.

HIStory3 consists of 2 stories with 10 25 minute episodes each (My Drama List has them listed with 20 episodes each, but it's just 10).

HIStory3: Trapped; A police officer ends up entangled with a gang leader as he investigates the murder of his mentor. *my personal favorite of the HIStory series, though it has a distinctly different vibe from the other entries

HIStory3: Make Our Days Count; Two opposite high school students, one an unruly extrovert, the other a studious introvert, find their paths crossing and become curious about the each other. *Arguably the most popular story in the HIStory series

HIStory4 consists of just one story with 10 24 minute episodes (again listed incorrectly as 20 episodes on My Drama List).

HIStory4: Close To You; two co-workers, long time friends and roommates agree to fake date to gain the attention of a fujoshi they work with. Meanwhile, their third roommate and coworker deals with the attentions of his younger step brother. CW: step sibling incest, r*pe & dubious consent

There have also been rumors of a second season of Make Our Days Count as a part two of HIStory4, but nothing has been confirmed and at this point it is unlikely.

The 10 BL series I've rated a 9.5 or 10 on My Drama List.

(tbh I really need to go through and audit this, because this does not match up to the top 10 BL series list I put out earlier this month-read it here)

Dark Blue Kiss

The only series I've ever given a 10/10 rating, only because for a long time it was my absolute favorite.

I don't blame people for not agreeing with this one as the plot is not great. What I love about it is the chemistry of the couples, the story of the side pairing and the leads' relationships with their parents.

3 Will Be Free

I absolutely stand behind this as a solid 9.5.

As someone who is polyamorous, I love the rep (and fully headcannon that the three main characters are still together at the end as a throuple even though I don't think the writers necesarily intended that). I also always love more action based BLs.

Cherry Magic!

Again, absolutely stand behind this, it's in my top 10 of all time and probably always will be.

It's just really cute and fun, it feels like it was made for adults without having to be dark or gritty (not that there's anything wrong with that, but this was a nice change of pace).

A Tale of Thousand Stars

Another one that's in my top 10 of all time.

It's a slow burn that didn't bore me, which is honestly an achievement. It's heartfelt and real and beautifully done.

HIStory3: Trapped

Once again, in my top 10 of all time, deserves a 9.5.

Again, I'll always favor an action series. I would describe this as a more PG KinnPorsche. Loveable characters, interesting plot & dynamics. Tragic that it hasn't gotten a season 2.

Anyways, I love MaxTul and I love action/mystery BLs. Can't wait for the sequel.

Still 2Gether

I can tell you right now that this only got such a high rating because of how much I love Mike & Toptap together.

Until We Meet Again

This should probably be at least a 9.7.

It really raised the bar for BL at the time it was released. While I have my own small grievances with it and definitely don't recommend it for everyone, I love the story, the acting, the characters, the friendship...I could go on.

We Best Love: No. 1 For You

Honestly surprised that this made it up so high.

I know a lot of people love this show, and while clearly I enjoyed the first season, I think I just forgot how much after being let down by S2.

Why R U?

Another one that I'm surprised to see up here.

Tbh I liked this one a lot more than other people, and gave it some slack due to the dificulties it had production wise with COVID. Yes, it's a bit of a mess, but Fighter/Tutor remains a fantastic ship and it's a fun watch in my opinion.

Let's take a dive into the first BL series that got me into the genre...

SOTUS

The first BL I ever watched because I randomly stumbled upon it on Netflix back in 2019 (I think?). Although it was good enough to convince me to look into more like it, I now love it mostly for the nostalgia.

The Plot: A university freshman stands up to an upperclassman he believes abuses his power and sparks a rivalry.

Love By Chance

Unfortunately, the dumpster fire that was the second season of this show has really hurt my perception of it and that's all I really have to say about that.

The Plot: A shy rich kid who hides his sexuality meets a kind boy at university. As their friendship grows, so do their feelings for each other.

After this point, I don't 100% remember the order of when I watched them, but here's a couple older ones I loved:

Dark Blue Kiss

Unpopular opinion: I actually loved this show. Note: it is an off-shoot of another series, but I don't find that one necessary to watch personally.

The plot is a pretty boring jealousy situation, but I loved the relationship both main characters have with their parents, the chemistry between the actors of both the main and side couples was great and I really enjoyed the story of the side couple. It also has a very satisfying ending that left me feeling very content.

This absolutely remains in my top 10 of all time, and I've only ever heard one person say they didn't like it.

The Plot: two lovers are reincarnated in a time when being gay is much more acceptable. Now they have to reconnect with each other, rediscover their pasts and settle some demons. CW: suicide, homophobia
