Why 2021 was the best thing to happen to McLaren

Straight away there will be some of you muttering under your breath or gasping dramatically. Yes I really said what I said. So let’s look at this from three angles.

The team opened 2021 still in debt, still using Toyota’s wind tunnel in Germany and having to hand over all their development tokens for a shiny new Mercedes power unit. The team doesn’t pretend to be Mercedes or Ferrari, who ironically bear more than a passing nod to the all grey clad hyper technology driven Ron Dennis McLaren era.

That being said they have to believe the good times are coming. They have scored podiums with a midfield car for the last two years, won in Indycar, expanded their horizons to other fields and their own wind tunnel comes online next year. They are at a point engine manufacturers want to court them, they are a promising prospect. The balance sheet looks better. This team is on the rise.

Lando freely admits he was told this was the year to grow up. Daniel’s arrival meant he now had a serious benchmark to be measured against. Time to prove you are that amazing talent everyone has said since karting. And he did. Fast, gutsy, fearless at times. Lando is the real deal, no more doubt. However the second half of the season is just as important, the endless bad luck, the grind for little reward, losing your first win because someone misinterpreted a weather screen. Lando of 2019 would have spent weeks blaming himself for all the things that went wrong, however he’s learnt shit happens, some days there is nothing you can do. This year will improve and toughen Lando as a driver going forward. I’ve no doubt of that.

Finally Daniel. He arrived at Woking with his usual confidence and bravado and found more than he bargained for. He struggled yes. Maybe he regretted jumping from Renault so soon, maybe that’s something he learnt. However he found himself outside the Renault family for the first time and got a nice surprise. You are allowed to struggle. No one is threatening you with your job. The team want you to have fun as much as you do. They get you miss home and how hard that is, your not a robot. Most importantly when Monza came, he learnt this isn’t Red Bull. Despite Lando being the stand out for the team this season, when the team were faced with letting their drivers battle or giving team orders to let the other one through, they sided with Daniel (and rightly so, he had earned track position). I think in that one act Daniel got what he needed from this year. The much coveted win and the realisation that the team would not take away his achievements from him. He had a team mate who would accept that decision as well and be happy for him to have that moment. In a tough year he was given the reassurance he had still made the right decision. He was not about to be made Lando’s wingman.

The team made the right decision because the next race a fired up Lando went and stuck it on pole (he’d been threatening it all year) and so nearly won his first race (if nothing else we saw him go toe to toe with Lewis, see earlier comments about Lando is the real deal).

At the end of a year that had lifted them up, chewed them up and spat them back out they finished with everyone of the same opinion, if not next year, 2023 McLaren will be a force to be reckoned with. Oh and your special one off liveries are to die for.

COVID is slowly becoming a “third world” disease. While first world countries are hoarding vaccines, having doses for populations many times their size, third world countries can’t get any because pharma companies want to sell to the first world countries first. Even then, first world countries will receive them first. While rich countries recover from COVID, they will forget about the pandemic while many other countries live the absolute worst moment of the pandemic without being able to vaccinate their population.
