Ben and Five's superhero names make much more sense if they were named by the villains

The villains could never get enough of a look at Five for any defining features as he always jumped around. Between criminals there were whispers about The Boy who was first there, then over there, then behind you, then- everything turns black

Survivors don't speak much of Ben. All they can describe him as is The Horror, because that's what he made them feel. A stronger horror than any other

this user has a few novel-length posts regarding this same subject, found here and here (and brought to my attention by my lovely friend alicia) and although i only skimmed both of them it was more than enough to get me fuming mad- my brain’s been kinda shut off lately, so i may just reiterate some of the things i said to my friend but i had to talk about it.

i cannot stress enough how much it should go without saying that this way of thinking re: five’s situation is unquestionably absurd but if you lack the Basic Common Sense i unfortunately can only wish we all had, cite instead the fact that gerard way himself was wary of this while writing five.

there’s a scene in dallas that’s always stuck out to me, during five’s final altercation with carmichael before he ultimately kills him, where he berates him for the torturous experimentation he put him through him by expressing “You cut out my humanity with a scalpel– Like a malignancy. I wake up in the morning with the finest impulses known to man– And thanks to you– I slaughter them. Every. Single. Day.” it’s a really special and meaningful scene because it’s pretty much the only scene in which we see five truly open up a bit and give us a look at how he feels as a mature adult dealing with what he’s become- key words there being “only scene”. gerard way fully recognized when writing this character that “okay there’s not much more to be said on that though, carry on” BECAUSE HE HAS, LET’S GO BACK TO THAT MAGIC LITTLE PHRASE, COMMON FUCKING SENSE. the common sense that, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, allowed him to recognize immediately that when writing the character of a 10-YEAR-OLD CHILD, no matter how mentally old in the context of the story, there is a clear line not to be crossed, there should not be focus on how that character feels regarding sexual intimacy. the common sense that you as a reader are expected to possesses, allowing you to also recognize immediately that this abomination of a full grown man living in the body of a very young child is not supposed to warrant a second thought from you in regards to his feelings on sexual intimacy. especially because, again, in the special case of five, that can also only mean exploring his sexual feelings for… “““other adults”““. surprise! it’s pedophilia, congratulations, you learned a new word!

let me aknowledge that i’m citing the comic in regards to a post made about the show’s iteration of the character; there are a few minor details about this character changed in the show, his physical body being 13 instead of 10 while he’s aged to 58 instead of 60, and the fact that the show’s five will continue to physically age from 13 while in the comic he is immortal at 10 henceforth- but the biggest change i think the show gives us as far as five’s character goes is a more emotional five, a five who openly cares about his family and about the people around him in general more, giving us a more sympathetic approach to his relationships with others- back to the situation being discussed, with that being said, do you see five actively boohoo-ing over the fact he has no one to be intimate with in the show? remember when i said the thing about “you as the reader are supposed to have the common sense not to give a second thought to the sexual urges of a child, whether that include the fictional detail of them mentally being full grown or not”? replace reader with viewer and bam, guess what, you’re still here! yeah one thing the comics and show have in common, that hasn’t changed. and with the show you even have the added layer of the fact you’re watching a real minor playing this character. and if this is what you’re thinking about while watching there is sincerely no help for you.

I know there’s people out there who are going to clown on Luther telling Five he “doesn’t give a shit” about stopping the apocalypse in ep 1, and use it as an excuse to keep calling him an irredeemable bastard, when the rest of the season very clearly sets up his redemption (he fucking acknowledges how bad his actions were and apologizes to Vanya for the hurt he caused her, and even says he understands if Vanya does not want to ever see him anymore)

BUT can we at least recognize that this is like… suicidal ideation? I can’t be the only one who caught that right? Luther might not be actively suicidal but this is passive suicidal if I’ve ever seen it. Five basically told him the world would end and Luther would die and Luther answered that he didn’t give a single flying fuck-

Made all the more significant by the fact that it’s immediately followed by Five trying to compel Luther by telling him he’s Number One and so it’s his duty to stop this, with Luther saying he isn’t Number One anymore and probably never was. We already knew from season 1 that Luther’s entire self-worth was based around the rigid role as team leader Reggie had given him, and now that he has lost that purpose, he literally does not care about dying.

Can 2020 please be the year we recognize all the Hargreeves have their own valid trauma

Luther who KNITS though.

I’ve been learning to knit during lockdown as a way to deal with stress and it works so well. It engages your fine motor skills while still allowing you to zone out to some music or a show and it’s really helped me deal with things better, so all the while I couldn’t stop imagining him really loving it.

And I mean, think of all the cute things Luther would knit for his siblings? Because you better believe Luther would not be interested in knitting things for himself (except maybe a few stylish pairs of gloves to cover his hands with when going out) but damn if he wouldn’t shower his family with knitted presents.

He’d probably make Vanya some of those cool infinity scarfs in different colors and also at least one beanie. Diego definitely gets colorful socks or a sweater because Luther has a sense of humor and enjoys being a little shit. He’d honestly make Klaus tons of things because Klaus definitely would wear all of it and that makes Luther very happy? Allison mostly wears fashionable clothes but Luther makes her one of those really nice blankets she is very protective over and doesn’t let anybody else have since it’s just the coziest. Five would be like “I don’t /need/ anything” so Luther knits him one of those silly cup warmers for his coffee mugs and Five is just “ok yeah fine” and uses it because he’s secretely a sap. knitting for Ben is hard but Luther asks him what he wants anyway and learns to crochet just to make him a octopus plushy.
