It is said that the house you’re sorted into at Hogwarts reveals a lot about the sort of person you are. It is said that the house you’re in at Hogwarts can determine a great deal about the kind of person you’ll grow up to be. But no one seems to fit the traits of just one house; everyone has somewhere else they could have almost gone, instead, if the hat had chosen differently.
What would the Wizarding World we know be like if everybody had been sorted somewhere else? Re-imagine the events of Order of the Phoenix if the faces you know wore different colors; re-imagine the world resorted.

THE DAILY PROPHET HEADLINE for SEPT 2nd: "HERO'S HOME BURGLED!"
Malfoy and wife shaken but unharmed: A baffling burglary at elegant Malfoy Manor has left the Ministry stumped! When Lucius Malfoy and his wife, Narcissa, returned from escorting their son (Draco, 15) to the train station for his annual journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry they found that the sanctity of their home had been violently breached! Not only the magical wards but the walls themselves had been rent-asunder by powerful magic. The Ministry refuses to comment, but this reporter can recognize the work of Curses when she sees it, and only Dark Magic could have breached this privacy-conscious family’s protections. It is as yet unclear what, if anything, the thief or thieves managed to escape with; the entry-point for the robbers was the estate’s library and the damage done was considerable. It will take quite some time for the MLEP to pick through the wreckage and determine what is missing, and what was destroyed. Neither Malfoy could be reached for comm— [story continues on page A3]

HARTBEATS ROLEPLAY IS NOW OPEN FOR EARLY-PLAY!
For the next month, due to the holiday season, activity levels will not be tracked. Nor will the game be starting properly; instead play will take place prior to the beginning of the school term, during the late summer of 1994. Players are encouraged to interact on the streets of Diagon Alley, at the Quidditch World Cup, at the Ministry of Magic, in their characters’ homes—wherever you want your students to meet-up prior to their journey to Hogwarts!
You can also take this time to craft some headcanons for your character, discuss plots and relationships with your fellow players, even complete some prompts to earn early points for your house! Become comfortable with your character and with this alternate version of the Wizarding World.
Any applications submitted during this time will be immediately reviewed (or at least as quickly as our schedule permits!) so that everyone has a chance to enjoy this “soft-opening” period before the chaotic events of life at Hogwarts, in a world where Voldemort is soon to return without a Chosen One to oppose him, gear-up for another year of mischief and mayhem!
This is also an excellent time to flesh-out any aspects of the Wizarding World that you find especially interesting, and share ideas for plots you’d like the chance to play with in this alternate version of Harry Potter. We’re always glad to take suggestions, and look forward to building—and playing in—this game with you!
Welcome to Hartbeats. Let the summer holidays begin!

Draco Malfoy | Slytherin | Fourth Year | Pure-blood
Heir to the Malfoy family, Draco grew up pampered to the point of pain. Having the savior of the wizarding world for a father doesn’t hurt, either: Draco Malfoy is perhaps the most famous boy in England, and he likes it that way—or at least claims to. Those who do not see the Malfoys as heroes view them with suspicion, and of course their old allies all consider them traitors. Being in Slytherin is difficult for the son of the man who killed the Dark Lord. There are too many children of incarcerated Death Eaters in those dungeons, some of them more than happy to extract payback for Lucius’s betrayal. A scrawny, sharp-tongued boy, Draco is a little too clever for his own good but is generally only dangerous when he has a wand in his hand—or a vial of poison. Were it not for the sharp-eyed protection of his head of house, Severus Snape, Draco would probably not have been able to get through his first week of classes without sporting black eyes on a daily basis.
His other protector is Hermione Granger, a Muggle-born girl whom Draco met during their first journey to Hogwarts. Draco quickly decided that the brash, clever witch was a good friend to have, despite her blood-status. Of course, the Malfoys are blood-traitors now, so Draco pays heavy lip-service to equality—although unlike his parents, whose beliefs did not change along with their public allegiance, he is starting to doubt the family’s old-fashioned convictions. That’s the one thing he can’t talk to Hermione about, because she of course has no idea that he is secretly still a blood-supremacist, and he doesn’t dare bring the subject up with his parents either for fear of disappointing them. Most of Draco’s blustering confidence is pretense, and sometimes he finds it hard to remember which lie he’s supposed to be living. Flying as Seeker is finally winning him some regard from his housemates, but for the most part he is still viewed as something of an outcast.
Ranks and Positions:
Slytherin Seeker
Birthday:
June 5, 1980
Wand:
Hawthorne and Unicorn Hair, reasonably pliant, 10”
Relationships:
Hermione Granger — a fearless friend in a pinch, and perhaps even a little smarter than him, she raises all sorts of uncomfortable doubts about his parents’ assurances that blood matters
Harry Potter — they’ve known each other long enough to almost be family, but that doesn’t mean they get along; at least Uncle Sev usually still sides with Draco when he an Harry argue
Gregory Goyle & Vincent Crabbe — annoyingly fearsome bullies despite their intellectual inferiority; it’s not fair
Lucius Malfoy — father, his hero whom he fears never living up to
Narcissa Malfoy — mother, completely perfect of course, but he wonders if she will still support him if he betrays their ideals
Severus Snape — godfather (as of 1982)*, reliable and hilarious
Nymphadora Tonks — cousin, always entertaining albeit a little crass
*Draco’s initial godparents were Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange. After Lucius’s betrayal of Lord Voldemort, the Malfoys had to make several changes in their lives, such as choosing more suitable potential guardians for their precious son.
ALTERED CANON INFORMATION:
Draco is, on an underlying level, still Draco Malfoy: he has all the arrogance of the initial version. But this Draco lacked his burly body-guards, and his confidence in blood-supremacy is shaky. He didn’t have the muscle (Crabbe and Goyle) to be the bully he should have grown into, and is instead himself often the target of bullying. Consequently, he is shy, and a little skittish, and his sarcastic venom is even more of a defensive reaction than it was in primary canon. He is not as changed as, say, Neville Longbottom, but he is still not exactly the same confident little boy he was in the original world. Besides, he’s one of the good guys now. Whether they want him or not.
Face-claim: Tom Felton [x] [x]

Sadly, it seems that way. I’d love to get it rolling again—if enough people are interested, I’d be more than happy to polish things up and start recruiting again!
If you are interested in playing here, please either shoot me a message or like this post. If there’s interest, I’m definitely in for a re-vamp and re-opening, believe me!

Hiding in Hogsmeade || Draco & OPEN
Draco stood idling impatiently in the Great Hall near the doors, glancing over at the distant clock every few seconds. He also kept up a steady stream of grumbling under his breath about the new restrictions that McGonagall had imposed for this week-end's Hogsmeade visit; as long as he was complaining about the ridiculous safety measures, nobody would think he was nervous enough to be glad they'd been put in place, right?
That was Draco's hope, anyway; he got picked on too often as it was for cowardice, and he didn't want to encourage anyone to tease him more than they already did. He also knew that there were few faster ways to attract the attention of Crabbe and Goyle than by appearing to be weak. And with Hermione determined to stay in the castle to finish--was it something for Transfiguration? History of Magic? Draco couldn't remember--homework or some sort, anyway, that meant that he didn't have her intimidating presence to deter people from bothering him. Draco was hoping she would change her mind, let herself take a break and go to the village anyway--he'd wheedled all last night in the library, until curfew required them to return to their disparate common rooms--but he wasn't counting on it.
With Luna too entrenched in her own world to be reliable, and Marigold too young, that left Draco all on his own for this week-end's Hogsmeade visit (although he hoped that he might run into one of the very interesting Ravenclaw's he'd been talking to lately, Lisa Turpin or Marietta Edgecombe) and thus he was actually quite glad that McGonagall was requiring the students to walk down to the village in groups. Draco wasn't particularly fond of most of his fellow students, but their company was surely better than whatever had crawled out of the Chamber of Secrets.
Being a Malfoy and a Black, Draco would not ordinarily have fretted about a monster of Salazar Slytherin's...but the message on the wall about blood-traitors had him worried. His family was, after all, regarded as the worst blood-traitors in England these days, and doubtless whoever Slytherin's Heir was, they favored the Dark Lord's politics--which meant that Draco was quite as much at risk as any Mud-blood, and even more at risk than a Weasley. It was not a comfortable feeling, and his housemates had lost no time in teasing him about it.
Draco did not in the least regret slipping a vial of nausea-inducing potion into one of the pitchers of pumpkin juice at his house table this morning. He'd warned Marigold not to drink from it, and anyone else in Slytherin...well, they probably deserved what they got.
Skittish and lonely as he felt right now, though, Draco took little pleasure in the prank. He stood off to the side of the crowd, waiting for Sprout--the teacher in charge of this batch of students--to declare them ready to depart. Seeing a familiar shock of red hair followed by an identical scalp and then a set of black dreadlocks, Draco edged backwards farther. He didn't want to catch the eye of the Weasley twins and their Quidditch-commentating friend; surely hiding from one menace at a time was enough!
Too keen to avoid the three Gryffindors to pay proper attention to the rest of the gathering crowd, Draco didn't realize he had backed-up into someone until he felt a foot squirm underneath his own. "Sor--watch where you're going!" Draco snapped, spinning around with a scowl, hoping that his nerves didn't show in his face. He wouldn't like anyone to think he was fretting...even though he very much was.

Draco flinched away from the red-haired girl's dark look, but all she did was glower at him; he could handle dirty looks, and relaxed again. Not that he had anything to fear in his god-father's presence, of course--but it was nice not to have to worry about even attempted pain. He reminded himself that even though she had flaming red hair, Marietta was neither a Gryffindor not a Weasley; she wasn't going to attack him anyway! Besides, she was intelligent enough that Draco was ready to start considering her a friend, even if she was oddly skittish around Uncle Sev. She was hardly the only one...and skittish or not, at least she was still making sense, and not just babbling nervously. She was holding it together very well in fact. Draco was relieved; he would have hated if she had embarrassed him in front of the Potions Master.
Knowing that Marietta was nervous, Draco made quite the show of nodding-along as she explained, hoping to make it clear to her that he was backing her up; Uncle Sev of course was a master of much more subtle interaction, and wouldn't have needed the enthusiastic nodding and small, terse gestures to realize that Draco agreed with everything the Ravenclaw was saying. But it wasn't meant to convince Uncle Sev, but rather Marietta, that he was on her side. He figured that after making her explain the bulk of their hypothesis (so that if it turned out to be totally wrong, he could privately assure Snape later that it had been all her idea) it was the least he could do in return.
Tumblr media
Draco couldn't help a brief smirk in agreement with Marietta's assessment of Hagrid, but he sobered quickly when she started talking about Moody. Now he really was trying to convince Uncle Sev that he agreed with the Ravenclaw girl; Draco knew that Snape was as leery of Alastor Moody as anyone who had served the Dark Lord, but Draco himself was no idiot. He wasn't about to propose that his god-father investigate the mad ex-Auror on a whim. "We certainly can't go to anyone else," Draco said, just in case it wasn't clear that he echoed Marietta's sentiments, "because they would just tell us about how Professor Moody is a respected Dark Wizard chaser, blah blah blah. But you could find out the truth--if there is anything to find out," he added belated.
For a moment Snape stared at the two of them in black-eyed silence. Draco resisted the urge to fidget; it was an uncouth habit, his mother always said, and betrayed a lack of confidence in one's self. Eventually Snape nodded, slowly, his expression totally unreadable -- even to Draco. "Interesting," he said slowly, the words rolling off his tongue like a scroll unfurling. "Very interesting. Well. I am glad that you brought your concerns to me. I can assure you, they will be investigated. Thank you both--and take ten points each, for your efforts and your insights." He nodded, twitched his hands in the barest of gestures toward the door, and raised an eyebrow.
Draco knew a dismissal when he saw one. His jaw worked, resiting the urge to say anything -- to protest, to continue to argue the case, to ask questions he knew Snape wouldn't answer -- then gave a curt nod of his own, a sullen glare, and spun on his heel for the door. Was Uncle Sev not going to take this seriously? Maybe he just didn't want Draco and Marietta spreading stories, and was afraid that they would get carried-away if they saw him react with excitement. Maybe.
Someone catch me up, it feels like I haven't surfaced from my text books in ages.
He was flapping his hand at her. Marietta shot him a Look, but opened her mouth, anyway.
"The boggarts were just so awful," she explained. Professor Snape reminded her of a horse, very tall and long-faced and terrible. "It sounds like something Professor Moody would do - certainly with good intentions," she added hastily. "But if students are getting hurt, we ought to cover all of our bases don’t you agree? Er." She glanced at Draco, stuck out her jaw, and scowled. If she was wary (scared, a voice that sounded remarkably like her grandmother corrected her) around Professor Snape, then Draco wasn’t going to know it. And maybe Professor Snape wouldn’t know it either, although Marietta had suspicions that he could smell fear. Not unlike a horse. Oh, for Merlin’s sake.
Tumblr media
"It could be Hagrid, of course, although I doubt he would be able to keep quiet about it. All that enthusiasm," she amended. She was never going to be overly fond of the Hogwart’s gatekeeper, but this seemed too far, even for him. "I really do think Professor Moody must know something. He’s teaching the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, anyway, he ought to have some idea, and people are starting to mention the school closing and exams being cancelled and all sorts of ridiculous things." She bit her tongue before she could go any further; her opinions on how this mess - boggarts and petrification and Professor Moody being hired in general - were being handled would hardly help their case.
"So," she finished, blinking, "we thought that you would be the professor to go to if we had noticed anything." Well, Draco did, anyway. “It seemed like the sensible thing to do.”

W-well...Professor Snape, for one. And Hermione! You want to risk making her angry, g-go ahead!
Tumblr media
Yeah -- we're beating you by 200 points, Weasley. I'm not too worried, personally! But I'd think that with your measly ten, you should be!
This is all seriously fucked...

Of course you would--you Gryffindors are all alike: too stupid to be sensible...
Tumblr media
Magnificent? Yes, they certainly are--at least from the Slytherin perspective. I'm not sure your own housemates would agree, of course...but I suppose you at least should be granted some credit for recognizing that you have value to the winning side--ours.
This is all seriously fucked...

Well, I can see how you attracted the Sorting Hat's attention. That's quite an ambitious streak you've got there, Vaisey.
Tumblr media
Okay, so what's your plan then? For getting rid of either one--I don't care. What have you got in mind? Go on, impress me.
There just has to be a way to get rid of him. We are Slytherins! If there's any chance freeing ourselves from that oaf it lies with us.
Tumblr media
Dumbledore... He's the worst thing that ever happened to this school. If I could only sack one person from Hogwarts it would be him. Merlin, I'd even be willing to put up with the Oaf if it means having a proper wizard lead this school.

Oh, well, ah...it's got, you know, interesting stuff in it sometimes...just, um...well, you know, it's not really a forum for a lot of potioneering theory, and that's my main area of interest, that's all.
I thought this might help

Oh, Merlin, you don't have to tell me that...
Tumblr media
I'm sure they aren't, but I've already tried to get him fired once. Or better yet, arrested. Marigold says that as long as Dumbledore is protecting him, the Ministry can't really do much without causing more trouble than it's worth; they're just not interested in starting that fight over one idiot teacher. She also threatened me with awful vengeance if I ever tried again, but mainly it's the lack of Ministry support that's the problem.
Yes, I'll be sure to let you know if I succeed in that. I wish they would just sack him already.

That big old buffoon never teaches us anything useful in those "classes".  I bet half those creatures aren't even legal.

Joonatan Jokela? I've never heard of him. Are you sure--no offense--but are you sure he's actually reclusive and not just, you know...a nutter? Not that your dad would ever knowingly publish some crack-nob's mad rambling of course, but he could have been tricked or something. You know? It happens...
Tumblr media
Six--you've read it six times? Merlin...all right, fine, I'm sold. If it's interesting enough that you read it six times, then I guess it doesn't matter if this Jokela person is a crack-pot or not, I want to read it. If only to see what all the fuss is about.
I thought this might help

Well, that certainly is a waste. But if you can teach your owl to poop on Hufflepuffs on command--or better yet, on Gryffindors--maybe we could nominate you to take over the Care of Magical Creatures classes.
Tumblr media
I mean...that's a more useful trick than anything that oaf Hagrid has ever taught any of us, so why not, right?
Owls are strange
Yes, I’m considering going to the owlery and training Persephone to do the same.
Tumblr media
I think it was a first year, so no chance of him being on their team. Such a shame really.
