For me what works with short writing is really trying to focus on the details that matter. For that, you need to establish a clear purpose/intent of what you want to explore in this fic, which will help you narrow down directions for it.
Then, you’re able to ask: does this description of this room explain something to my reader? Does it convey something in particular about how my character is feeling, does it foreshadow something that’s going to happen later in the fic? Does it have a purpose in building up my main objective in this work? If you can’t answer any of those questions with “yes”, you can probably keep this description minimal or leave it out altogether.
Also I 100% agree that especially in short form content, you need to show and not tell. Convey information on your character by how you describe them—for example, if you’re writing a coffee shop AU, you don’t need to explain to your writer that your main character has been working here for years and hates his job and his mean boss—you can instead showcase this information by how your character carries themselves when they get to work, how they act towards their boss, etc.
Writing short form content is, essentially, an exercise in sticking to the point and cutting out anything that doesn’t contribute to it.
How the heck do people write short fics??? Any time I try to plan something that I WANT to be small and simple, wHOOPS suddenly there's 50 characters navigating a lengthy plot with many shenanigans in order to save the world and people are dying probably. Not - everything - has - to - be - like - thiiiiiiis ugh. Short fic writers, please share your secrets!
There are a few things I do when I’m writing one shots and short fics:
have a simple, direct plot that doesn’t take a lot of twists and turns
just write one or two scenes with no particular ‘plot’ but an emotional goal
skip the details and descriptions for the most part
spend more time on dialogue and/or moving the plot forward than on giving a full picture of the scenes
Extras / OCs that only serve one purpose don’t get full backstories and descriptions. They don’t need them. They’re lucky if they get more than a name.
When I’m writing short fic (which is most of the time), it’s more of a sketch than a painting. I’m getting the ideas across but I’m not filling in all the bits and pieces that I could.
Short fic authors: what advice do you have for anon? How do you manage to NOT write 300K?

Do you have any advice and how to write a long fic?
I'll encourage long fic writers to add on in the notes, but as someone who tends to prefer short and medium-length fic, I'll tell you how I go about it.
Get a premise that you just absolutely love. You're going to be writing this thing for months, if not longer, so you want it to be something you're willing to spend a lot of time thinking about.
Embrace subplots. You'll have your main plotline that you want to see through from beginning to end, but you can also weave in some subplots here or there. The way I do this so that I don't get lost down a rabbit hole is that I always make sure that every chapter has at least 1 thing that moves the main plot forward and then if I want to spend 1-2K with some side characters doing something fun I can do that as well. Subplots can extend for the length of the full narrative, but they can also just last a chapter or three. If you're used to writing short fic, these might give you that familiar feeling of "completion"
A chapter is only as long as it needs to be. Don't get hung up on having a consistent chapter length. Don't get hung up on hitting some arbitrary number every time. Instead, figure out what the next part of your story needs to include and write however many words it takes to get that chunk across. Varying your chapter lengths is a normal thing to do and not something to stress about.
The next thing that I find important personally may or may not be relevant to you, but I find that I can't plot anything in much detail. If I get too into the nitty gritty with my plotting, it just feels like I've already written it. I need to keep it at the level of "And then A and B meet C and hijinks ensue." I can figure out the particular hijinks later. It's the characters meeting up that's the next important thing for me to figure out. Getting too far ahead of myself is a death knell for me in writing long fics, but there are other writers who swear by it. Test out different ways of approaching it and see what works for you.
As someone who tends to write more briefly, another feature that's common to longer fics is more extensive descriptions. People spend time painting visual pictures of the setting or the characters or the actions that are happening. Write the more bare-bones style that focuses more on dialogue (if you're like me) and then go back and read through what you've just written and see if there are opportunities to add in more detail. This can lead to some really interesting characterization choices and also help you out with worldbuilding.
When it comes to worldbuilding, you don't have to get it all on the page. You just need to share what's relevant for the reader in that moment and what is useful to lay out now so that it's already there in a future chapter. You can have an encyclopedic knowledge of how your world works in your head, but it's not actually necessary. No one is going to be quizzing you later - and if they do, you can always figure it out at that point.
Most important for me when I'm trying to get myself to the end of a longer fic, have a friend or a group of friends who are also into what you're writing - or at least willing to hear you get excited about it. Being able to get excited about your work is so important. It's like a bottle of water being handed to you on mile 10 of a marathon.

clorinde/navia | canonverse | 440 words
The place is small, almost cramped. It’s old and worn, and just like Navia’s eyes, it tells tales of a different time.
Clorinde remembers it like the back of her hand. It bears traces of their childhood memories throughout, subtle but still obstinately there.
It took years for her to be let back in. Clorinde doesn’t hold it as a grudge.
Navia didn’t have more than her inner conviction of her dad’s innocence; Clorinde had nothing but a suspicion.
Nevertheless, the truth doesn’t bring the dead back to life.
And so the place has changed. It’s Navia’s place now. It has changed in barely-seen touches—a new painting in the bathroom, a few of the rugs switched around, a layer of new paint in the study.
Through and through, though, it is still the same place.
The place where, without Clorinde being able to put a name on it, she first experienced a feeling blossoming deep in her heart.
She kept it preciously over the years. When its silken petals fell, she kept them like flowers pressed between the pages of a book; like keepsakes.
She relearns Navia, day by day.
The paths that lead to her heart are at once familiar and unfamiliar. Some she has trodden many times; others are new, unexplored territory.
She patiently maps them out, adjusting her cartography of Navia as she goes.
And Navia lets her in.
It’s a subtle thing at first. It starts with lingering touches, hushed words pressed against Clorinde’s ear, a bise on her cheek, perhaps.
Soft looks through a fan of lashes, over a cup of tea; eyes Clorinde can feel meandering towards her back when she leaves.
It builds into something more, day by day.
At some point, the bise becomes a kiss; and eventually it finds its way to Clorinde’s lips. The lingering touches become Navia’s hand, small and soft and warm, sliding into Clorinde’s calloused one.
The awkward sitting across from one another at the Café Lucerne becomes waking up tangled in bedsheets, with dawning sunlight spilled over, dancing with the golden curls of Navia’s hair.
In her old bedroom.
Little by little, it becomes their secret refuge; away from all the noise and chaos of life.
And, perhaps for the first time after the incident, Clorinde starts to taste a little bit of joy. It blooms on her tongue like whipped cream on cake, in the form of Navia’s lips on hers.
After tasting the sweet nothings Navia whispers in her ear, silken and soft like the petals of a rainbow rose, Clorinde can name that feeling that started blossoming so long ago for the first time.
Love.
