Looks like it's that time again
Do I think that they'll be anything about Reboot Camp in this direct? Honestly no. The game only just came out and I doubt they'll be any big updates because of the delays. My real pipe dream for this direct would be releasing the older games on NSO, though I still doubt it. The original Famicom Wars is already on the Japanese NES NSO and the last things they added to the SNES was Mother 1 and 2 months ago. Though maybe the Gameboy Wars games could be added with the new(ish) Gameboy service? Even if it's Japan only, I'd be happy with any old re-release.

So with it being April 30th for me, that means it’s currently May 1st in Japan; making it the 25th anniversary of Super Famicom Wars releasing on Nintendo Power!
I accidentally ended up completely forgetting about it’s original first release in March, but hey this is the version of the game with Billy in it so it’s obviously more important.

Spoiler warning for Reboot Camp I guess
THEY USED BILLY’S THEME FOR THE MISSION RANK OVERVIEW BEFORE THE CREDITS IN THE AW1 CAMPAIGN I AM GOING TO EXPLODE
They also used the SFW map select theme for the AW1 campaign mission select screen; SFW fans are eating good this time around.
Just in time for the 25th anniversary of its Nintendo Power release.
Now that I think about it, there’s a lot of anniversaries coming up. There’s SFW turning 25 on May 1st (or April 30th in the west I guess,)  This blog turns 1 year old tomorrow, even my birthday is soon; It’s a very festive time about now.

Plus the toy theme was based on the Japanese cover for Dual Strike.
Tumblr media
I had completely forgotten about the Japanese AW:DS cover tbh. I don't think it was the main thing the graphics were based on, but it does have some similarities. Nice catch Anon.

Another thing that’s been bothering me while looking at what people are saying about Reboot Camp are the amount of posts saying that the art style is “bad” or “cheap” or “looks like a mobile game.” You can dislike the art style, I’m not saying that you can’t, but many of the people I’ve seen complaining about it seem to be coming from the viewpoint that the original graphics were objectively better and that the more toy-like aesthetic that Wayforward is going for isn’t in spirit of the original, seemingly ignoring the idea that a series is allowed to change over time, especially in the hands of a new studio developing it. Many of the arguments sound more like people being blinded by their nostalgia for the game; rejecting its new coat of paint because it’s different from what they wanted, and not because it’s actually flawed.
I think that Wayforward should be allowed to put their own spin on the graphics, characters, and aesthetics without having to stick perfectly to the original. Changing and building upon an original thing or idea is incredibly important in developing anything, and letting ones personal attachment to its original state to the point of rejecting those new ideas isn’t just counterproductive, but completely lacks any actual criticism that could be used to improve any new concepts that are made from it.
Even if you ignore the creative aspect of the change, you’ve got to think of it from a marketing standpoint as well. I’ve also seen some people throw around the idea of HD2D graphics or saying “Just hire the fans,” but the problem with sticking so closely to the original and feeding the fans exactly what they want is that there aren’t that many fans left. The AW franchise desperately needs new people to support it, and alienating new people from buying the game because it visually caters so much to the people who either grew up with the game or similarly styled games is a great way to make the series go under again. The target audience for the game is kids, and the cute, brightly colored toy-like graphics are perfect for that audience.
I do have some personal grievances with some of the character design changes that hope to get into sometime, but I for the most part quite enjoy the new style they’ve gone with. Maybe it’s because I don’t have that same attachment to the original graphics, I only got into the series after the remakes were announced, but I hope that in the end the art will help the game grow a new audience and that Wayforward doesn’t get discouraged by the fan backlash.

TOMORROW
With Reboot Camp releasing so soon, I’ve been thinking about what people have been saying about it and how Nintendo has been marketing it, especially since Nintendo seems to have started the marketing campaign for TOTK around the same time they started the one for Reboot Camp.
I understand that TOTK should get more marketing since it’s a much larger game and is releasing in more places and all that, I’m not saying I’m upset about it, I just wish that Nintendo, IntSys, Wayforward, whoever was in charge, chose a release date that would give AW a bit more time to breathe.
RBC hasn’t even released in the US yet and Nintendo of America has already had their Twitter banner advertising TOTK for quite a while now.
Tumblr media
It looks like from what I can tell at least, that Reboot Camp is doing alright for itself with the advertising they’ve gave it, but I’m still nervous about how the release of such a big game so close to it will affect its sales and media exposure.

While doing some wiki-diving on Super Famicom Wars awhile back, I found a line in the Game Catalog Wiki that peaked my interest.
Tumblr media
SFW featured in a Lawson commercial? As I said, I found this awhile back and gave up searching for it after I couldn’t find it. But I recently decided to keep searching for it and guess what, I managed to find it.
Tumblr media
I found it in a compilation of Nintendo Power ads on Youtube that was only just uploaded at the end of 2021. It’s shown about 40 seconds into the video along side Sutte Hakkun, Another Satellaview game turned Nintendo Power exclusive, and the SFC remake of Famicom Detective Club Part 2. The text on the right I believe says “popular best 3,″ and the left just says “Super Famicom” while not reading the Kanji, as they’re too blurry for me to make out. I’m not sure when this commercial was aired, but it was probably in 1998 considering that’s the year all the games listed came out, and was a year before Thracia 776 came out and swept the Nintendo Power sales charts.
I guess we can rest easy knowing that an ad for the game was at some point aired. It’s nice knowing that it had more media coverage than previously thought, even if it’s not much more.
