Phoenix's wins this week:
I booked tickets to see The Phantom Menace in cinema next Sunday!!!
I booked tickets to see The Search for Spock in cinema in June!!!
I just planned 3 (decent!) maths lessons in under an hour
Mum bought me a surprise gingerbread man to take on the school trip I'm chaperoning tomorrow
Phoenix's not-wins this week:
I Did Not Know that I was opening the cafe alone yesterday, didn't pick up the key on Friday, and therefore had to sprint to the other location (thankfully not to far) to get the spare, sprint back, and then do all my opening jobs
My asthma has not spontaneously disappeared, and the running was unpleasant XD

there’s absolutely nothing better than reading a 100k word fanfic, that is until you remember you have a body that is starving, thirsty and incredibly sleep deprived and hasn’t used the bathroom since the sun set 8 hours ago

tragic news: bra commits ultimate betrayal and snaps in middle of English lesson for thirty 5-6 year olds
(fortunately I lived, but I'll never recover from the pure dread of it XD)
(I managed to bodge it closed for the rest of the day, since that was my the first lesson of the day)

Satine Week 2024 - Day 4: Cat
Rating: General
Word Count: 100
Read on AO3
"My father was allergic to cats," she lied.
“It wasn’t mine, it was my cousin’s.  I never had a pet.”
“Why not?”
Satine knelt to Korkie’s level, gazing with him at the old holo he’d pulled out.  How could she explain to him the dangers of politics, the risk of war?  How could she tell him of being sent - more than once - to Coruscant by her parents to escape assassination?  How could she explain that they could never have a lothcat, because it was a liability?  Korkie had never lived in that world; she refused to bring him into it.
“My father was allergic to cats,” she lied.

Satine Week 2024 - Day 3: Tears
Rating: General
Word Count: 100
Read on AO3
Satine huddled closer to the fire, her back to both of them.
Qui-Gon was sleeping already.  Obi-Wan was deep into his meditation, apparently drawing on the Force to sense any intruders to their little camp before they could get close.  (Satine had her doubts, but she wasn’t about to say that.)
For her own part, Satine huddled herself closer to the fire, her back to both of them.  Her cloak had ripped, but she still held it tight about herself.  The rip was nothing compared to the suffering of her people.  The fate of her dead.
Satine’s breath shivered, but she held herself steady.  She would not cry.
She would not cry.
(Sorry it's late guys!!)

Star Trek Episode Codas - Masterpost
A Whole Lifetime
Perhaps, like Jim, Spock felt an inability to connect. A barrier between himself and the rest of the galaxy. Different barriers, yes - the barrier of rank, the barrier of emotion - but barriers all the same. The impossibility of meeting someone, anyone, who might understand them well enough to…
To what?
All that, and Jim’s mind was fixed on one crucial point. When I feel friendship for you, I am ashamed. *** No longer infected, Jim and Spock are forced to discuss what came to light in the briefing room.

We Dare
Jim entered his room silently and found Spock, not asleep, but lying quietly in his bed in an approximation of rest. He felt Spock’s dark eyes following him as he kicked off his boots, pulled off his clothes, and crawled beneath the covers without showering. He lay on his side, facing Spock, and said, “Long day.” *** Stiles' fear raised its head on the bridge. Spock voices his own fears to Jim.

They Forget I Am Half Human
Why, then, was Ensign Chekov standing with perfect posture in his quarters, and asking, quite firmly, to know what really happened with the Melkotians?
Jim swallowed nervously - though, naturally, Chekov would have no way of recognising it as a nervous swallow, as he’d taken a tactical sip of coffee before allowing any such weakness to slip through - and faced the man head on. “Why do you ask?”
Chekov relaxed slightly, but not by much. “Nothing in particular, Keptin. Only…”
“Only?”
“Mr Spock has been acting very strangely since our return.” *** Months after the Melkotian incident, Ensign Chekov is still unaware of the truth of what happened in that pseudo-Western nightmare.
No one expected Spock to be the one who ruined that record.

Satine Week 2024 - Day 2: Mother
Rating: General
Word Count: 100
Read on AO3
Warning: Implied/Referenced death in childbirth
She remembered soft hair and a gentle smile.
She remembered soft hair and a gentle smile.  She remembered polished armour and a ready blaster.
She remembered her father’s ready laughter at a quick-fire joke.  She remembered how the piano sounded beautiful and the voice beautifully out of tune.
She remembered being told that somewhere inside was her sister, and that her job would be to look after her, always.  She remembered nodding eagerly, excitedly.
She remembered the buzz of building a nursery, a crib.  Picking toys.
She remembered hushed voices in a hospital room.
She remembered Bo, wrinkled, crying.  Alone.
Satine remembered her mother.
She didn’t remember much.

Satine Week 2024 - Day 1: Jewel
Rating: General
Word Count: 100
Read on AO3
One day, she promised silently, she would prove herself. Her voice alone would command their obedience.
It was expected - though Satine’s advisors had never specified who was expecting - that the Duchess of Mandalore be outfitted in a manner designed to show off wealth.
Satine had reminded them that Mandalore did not have any wealth.  Endless wars had devastated the planet; any funds available were being funnelled into hospitals, domes, things that were useful.  Not Satine’s dresses.
These protests did not sway her council.  One day, she promised silently, she would prove herself.  Her voice alone would command their obedience.
For now, she sewed polished glass into her dresses and dared them to call her a liar.

So when Spock died in the radiation chamber obviously the implication is “had to be him because Vulcans withstand literally everything better than humans” angle, but like. What if Vulcans actually do withstand radiation better than humans because they actually already nearly wiped themselves out with nuclear war, and therefore the ancestors of modern Vulcans must have survived in irradiated conditions. Like those Chernobyl dogs.
Are Vulcans actually genetically resistant to radiation??
Something poetic about Vulcans almost killing themselves with radiation over rage and hate and violent emotion, and then millennia later Spock uses that genetic legacy to save the lives of the people he loves.

most annoying part of this -- apart from the Uni of [REDACTED]'s over-complicated absence reporting procedures, the fact I don't get to say bye to the kids or my mentors because I'm missing the last day, and that I've had to schedule my training shift for working at a cafe for the first time -- is that I was supposed to have chippy tea tomorrow!
i cannot have a chippy tea with covid because it tastes like Nothing! Vinegary Nothing!
i'm genuinely sad guys, i've been looking forward to it! XD
...can anyone explain why every time i have an essay due i get sick? i have a cold (from my reception placement, 4-5 year olds, cute lil germ factories XD) and an essay due on Monday :/

It has finished and... I liked it? But I get why some people did not. And it did not feel like a last episode, but I understand that, too
Spock got an excellent courtroom speech. He always gets good ones - which is a niche character trait that I liked very much XD
And Jim's back in his own body in time for the Animated series, just as he should be
And I've finished it! I have finished TOS! I feel proud! I'm almost sure this counted as binge-watching, which I haven't done before
Now I've got TAS and films to watch :D
Am now watching turnabout intruder, the final star trek episode, and I just....
Bones and Spock know somethings wrong because Jim's being mean to them XD Love it <3

He really just nerve pinches willy-nilly, doesn't he? Whilst holding Kirk-in-Lester's hand, which is sweet XD
Also, every time Spock sits in a court room he's there because of loyalty to his captain. Don't know where I'm going with that, but it's there
Am now watching turnabout intruder, the final star trek episode, and I just....
