“Phoenix” - digital art

I’m struggling to figure out where to start. We could start with Ye, of course, which would be a sort of false start, or the fact that antisemitism is an ancient kind of hatred. Or we could start with stolen art and burned books. Or antisemitic propaganda and getting kicked out of countless places. Or the left & right both singing the same song in different tunes. Or people’s indifference. Or everyone posting about their “solidarity” but not knowing the first thing about us, where we come from, or who we are.

Let’s start with “Phoenix”. I wanted to create something that could encapsulate my feelings into a single image. And of course a single image is limiting, but this is my expression of the grief and heaviness I feel right now. I titled this piece “Phoenix” because you can’t burn what’s already engulfed in flames. And we are definitely on fire, in the worst way and a better way. The worst way is more obvious; from white supremacists to covert family members, lots of someone’s flicked the lighter on. The better way is less so; we created our own flame long ago in order to displace darkness. Fire is a funny thing for that reason, it can keep us warm but singe us in the process.

I’ve been feeling fairly low and isolated recently. Around the time that these feelings began intensifying, one of my old posts of two queer Jewish couples began picking up notes again. My first reaction was bemused surprise–it’s several months old, and I assumed it had run its course by this point. But after seeing how much people were connecting with it and finding meaning in it, whether that be leaving a message in the tags or taking the time to write an image ID for it, I felt a little less alone. I love drawing, and I would obviously do it even if there was no one to look at it, but to know that I created something that makes people happy is incredibly special. Thank you all for giving me that, and happy pride.

Edit: please stop tagging this “q slur.” Tagging it “queer mention” or something like that is fine, but especially in a post like this, it’s really hurtful to see queer being referred to as a slur
