ok ive noticed some confusion within the fandom, so im gonna clear it up. formatted with proper grammar so it's more readable

Who is Bennette?

Bennette is an interpretation of Benrey as a trans girl, which has been an extremely pervasive headcanon on HLVRAI Twitter for the last couple of months. Bennette's name comes from this clip

GORDON: Isn't this your passport?

BENREY: uhhh no. it says "bennette".

The modern, suddenly popular incarnation of this headcanon originated with a fanfic. I'm not actually sure what it is but I think it's this.

Why am I suddenly hearing so much about Bennette?

For his 30th birthday, Wayner AdioTV hid a box of signed Toblerones near the legendary Toblerone Cave of Point Lobos, San Francisco. The first person to find one, when jokingly asked what they'd do as the "new HLVRAI 2 author", responded that they'd declare Bennette to be real, invoking Wayne in the tweet.

Shockingly, Wayne made an incredibly rare social media appearance and responded "you were the first to find my treasure, and so it will be done". This endorsement of the Bennette headcanon is what got all the attention, leading to word of Bennette getting to our relatively insular part of the fandom.

This also lead to the biggest misconception about this whole situation-- no, WayneRadioTV did not actually canonize a headcanon because someone found a box of Toblerones. Before any of this happened, there was evidence that Wayne liked the idea of Bennette, to the point that, according to Baaulp (at 32:42 of this part of the HLVRAI Cast Commentary), "The only headcanon I've ever seen Wayne get excited about is Bennette." It's clear he's a fan and just took the opportunity of someone "declaring Bennette real" to nod his approval.

at first, signing while he spoke was intentional when he was first learning. it helped him memorize signs and get comfortable with the language. over time, this led to gordon just subconsciously sticking the motions of those signs to different words and phrases. so, even when he's not intentionally translating his speech to sign, a few movements sneak through

a lot of portal fans have recently shown how disrespectful they are to canonically mute characters as of the latest steam deck promotional art. chell is canonically, completely, mute - and an official drawing does not always mean a canon drawing.

the fact that so many people are thrilled to "finally" get official chell speaking art, despite it frequently being reiterated in the games that chell is completely mute (even if she wasnt explicitly in portal1, due to her recent brain damage in portal2 it has since been confirmed), really shows some ableism within the portal community

Despite my best efforts to avoid the main HL tags lately, I’ve still noticed a recent uptick in posts where people are like “it’s so tragic that Valve gets rid of beloved characters after spending so many games developing their close, special relationships with the protagonist” about Barney Fucking Calhoun and I just have to ask… did we play the same games???

He has less than 8 minutes of voice lines! He’s in like 3.5 scenes! He and Gordon have maybe 3 sentences of lore, and it’s fairly basic and boring lore!

picking one for hlvrai is... hard, so i won't. for half life, i really enjoy the first game when you walk into work and get little remarks from other scientists and having the security guard at the front desk mention the servers being down. idk, im always such a sucker for hl1 interactions because they're so small but so good
