Like. Pink saw beauty in the earth and decided she wanted to keep it as it was because the earth, as it was, was capable of change and she found that inherently amazing. So she tried to save it with every avenue she had available to her and when her family wouldn’t listen, she created a personality that would force them to listen. And other gems heard her. saw her. found her inspiring and she then realized how much other gems wanted change. how many other gems felt oppressed by her family and her mission to save the earth became a full blown rebellion with her as the face of the enemy and her alter ego as the face of freedom and she didn’t intend for this to happen she didn’t intend for things to go this far for the lies to pile up but here they are here they stand and. well. she feels unloved and unwanted so she thinks she’ll be unmissed, so what’s one more lie? one more lie and the past will be buried, the war will be over. one more lie and they can live happily ever after. 

of course. reality is much more complicated than that. but she was an idealist. 

6000 years later she has the only two of her friends she was able to save and one gem that emerged late and she’s got to poof and bubble these creatures that all once served under her at some point in time and live with her guilt every single day. but she learns to grow. she learns to accept the past. she learns to be better. she denies Pearl a romantic relationship with her because even though she adores pearl, she wants her to grow and in a relationship like that, she never will. Plus she’s still afraid of hurting Pearl like she hurt Pink Pearl. 

She falls in love and gets married and decides to have a baby because she is finally finally happy and the earth seems safe. They don’t need her anymore. With her gone, maybe the past can finally truly be buried and Pearl can finally stand strong on her own because obviously her sticking around is the only thing inhibiting Pearl’s growth. Maybe with her gone and a baby to remember her by, the earth will finally be safe

of course, reality is more complicated than that.

do you ever think about how pink diamond saw her own flaws, saw how she hurt people, saw how fucking much damage she and the other diamonds caused through their conquest of planets and how much they hurt their own gems and BY THE FORCE OF HER OWN WILL made a conscious effort to be better, to do better, to help people, and to break her self out of her abusive home and THEN spent the next millennia trying to atone for her crimes BUT people still call her evil and selfish and horrible because she made mistakes on her way to becoming a better person and kept secrets about her traumatic and highly personal past? Like yeah, she’s not perfectly good, but fuck y’all, she made a self-motivated effort to be good and kind and that’s more than anything any of the other diamonds can say.

So like. I know everyone was like Pink Pearl x Spinel yadda yadda yadda when the movie came out but like. Given that we know Pink Pesrl's been blipped out as White Pearl for 8000 years now,,, imma go ahead and say it. Pink Pearl and Spinel probably never knew each other. I'm thinking, given how we know Pink behaved back then, having Pink Pearl taken away was punishment for being too childish. Instead she was given Pearl and, later, Spinel. Pearl was to act as a servant. She was a perfectly obedient servant with very little personality of her own and given that Pink Pearl was obviously her Friend, this change probably made her sad and despondent... But the Diamonds liked having her all cheerful and fun. She was the sweet little princess Diamond who lightened the hearts of the Queens when they became war weary. They liked her cheer and songs and silliness when it was held in check. So when she became sad with her Friend gone, they gave her Spinel. An Assigned Best Friend. Someone to make her happy and pump up her silly energy and all, but kept contained in the garden. Not to really interact with Pearl, only Pink.

Tldr: I think When Pink Pearl was taken away, Spinel and Pearl were given to Pink as replacements to clearly define the purposes of gems to Pink and force her to divide different aspects of her personality into separate spheres.

i love how the separation of steven’s gem is visually framed

it’s not something his human half is cloaking. his human half isn’t the real him, and neither is the gem. he’s both.

his human half can only start to move when he’s with the gem steven, and gem steven only smiles when he’s with human steven. you take the gem out of steven, and he can’t move. you take the steven out of the gem, and he can’t feel.

the idea that the two halves of him dancing are as much a fusion dance as with two gems, that self-love and acceptance is just as integral as love between people in a relationship— it’s shown so beautifully, and it’s so important, and i love this show.

Out of all the twists Change Your Mind gave us, the wildest has got to be that Obsidian is Like That.

Every piece of fanart I’ve seen of the Crystal Gems‘s foursome fusion leans very hard into the pastel palette, with softly glowing eyes and beautiful pink hair.

And what we actually got in canon was a fiery Polynesian volcano deity with black skin and the ability to forge swords in their throat.
